Thank You From the President Dear Friends, With the support of our Board of Trustees, alumni, families, faculty, staff, friends, and corporate, foundation, and community partners, we have made powerful progress toward the goals we laid out for ourselves. I have a profound and deep appreciation to all of you who have supported Bank Street College of Education’s work and am delighted to share some of our significant accomplishments from this past year. These accomplishments would not have been possible without your generous support of our Annual Funds—including the funds that support programming and scholarships in the Family Center, School for Children, Liberty LEADS, and the Graduate School of Education as well as contributions to the President’s Fund that enable the College to continue its work both at 112th Street as well as in the broader community. • Over the course of the last school year, a diverse group of leaders in the School for Children led a community-wide effort to develop a five-year strategic plan. The plan is focused on supporting faculty growth and development, enhancing STEAM programming, aligning our approach to literacy instruction and assessment, and strengthening the programmatic connections across divisions. As part of this work, faculty will also be engaging in professional learning communities, looking at student work, and exploring peer observation protocols. We are also thrilled to have raised $100,000 toward the development of our new STEAM Lab. We are excited as this brings us closer to our goal of raising $800,000 for the STEAM Lab and $200,000 for Student Support Center. • The Graduate School of Education is committed to broadening access to our programs and deepening our work in communities across the country. This year, we continued the development of new programs, engaged in ongoing reflection on coursework and instructional practices and laid the groundwork for the launch of online degree programs in the coming year. We also graduated three special cohorts of students: the first cohort of students in the Early Childhood Urban Education master’s degree program and the second and third cohorts of early child care practitioners participating in the Guttman Center for Early Care and Education in East New York. • The Bank Street Education Center continues to build on our partnerships to support equity and deeper learning in school systems across the country. Last year, among dozens of projects, the School System Partnerships & Programs team completed a multi-year instructional improvement project in four districts 3
in New York State, and the Center on Culture, Race & Equity established critically important communitybased work in schools, districts, and communities in the Bronx, Harlem, Newark, and Washington, DC to create more equitable and just learning environments for children. Prepared To Teach (formerly the Sustainable Funding Project) has been working with district/preparation program partnerships in seven states to support and document a two-year cycle of residency program design for sustainability. • We also continued our strong work directly supporting children across the city. Last fall, the incredible work of our Family Center was profiled in a powerful piece entitled “Here’s What the Best Child Care Money Can Buy Looks Like” that ran in The Hechinger Report and on Slate.com. In addition, as a result of the hard work of our Liberty LEADS program staff, 91 percent of the high school seniors graduated on time this spring and 100 percent matriculated into college in September. Our accomplishments are not possible without the generous support of our donors. Gifts to our four Annual Funds (President’s Fund, Family Center Annual Fund, School for Children Annual Fund, and Graduate School Annual Fund) help support many of our new initiatives at the forefront of progressive education. This year, you also helped us make history at our 2018 Bank Street Annual Dinner, setting a new fundraising record of $1.15 million to help us continue our leadership and work in the field of early childhood development and education. Every dollar matters because it directly supports our students, our faculty, financial aid, special programs, and a variety of other essential functions. Please take a moment to browse the 2017-2018 Annual Funds Honor Roll and meet our donors and volunteers. Warmly,
Shael Polakow-Suransky, GSE ’00 President, Bank Street College of Education

Our Mission & Credo Mission The mission of Bank Street College is to improve the education of children and their teachers by applying to the education process all available knowledge about learning and growth and by connecting teaching and learning meaningfully to the outside world. In so doing, we seek to strengthen not only individuals, but the community as well, including family, school, and the larger society in which adults and children, in all their diversity, interact and learn. We see in education the opportunity to build a better society. Credo Nearly a century ago, Lucy Sprague Mitchell, Bank Street’s founder, wrote a credo that continues to define the spirit of imaginative and critical inquiry that motivates and guides our work today: What potentialities in human beings — children, teachers, and ourselves — do we want to see develop? • A zest for living that comes from taking in the world with all five senses alert • A lively intellectual curiosity that turns the world into an exciting laboratory and keeps one ever a learner • Flexibility when confronted with change and ability to relinquish patterns that no longer fit the present • The courage to work, unafraid and efficiently, in a world of new needs, new problems, and new ideas • Gentleness combined with justice in passing judgments on other human beings • Sensitivity — not only to the external formal rights of the “other fellow,” but to him as another human being seeking a good life through his own standards • A striving to live democratically, in and out of schools, as the best way to advance our concept of democracy Our credo demands ethical standards as well as scientific attitudes. Our work is based on the faith that human beings can improve the society they have created.

Thank You From the School for Children Dear Alumni and Friends, What a year it was! Despite the political divisiveness and vitriol that pervaded the airwaves and occupied our national consciousness, we, in the School for Children, doubled down on our commitment to educating our children through the values of play, community, decency, and respect. Our world-class educators, the school’s greatest resource, showed up each day as living proof of Lucy Sprague Mitchell’s prophetic “courage to work, unafraid and efficiently, in a world of new needs, new problems, and new ideas.” We engaged in a thorough and democratic strategic planning process resulting in five clear priorities that will guide our work for the next five years. And we ushered 40 extraordinary young individuals, the Class of 2018, into many of the top independent and public schools in New York City and beyond. As I pause to reflect on this past year, I realize more than ever the transformative impact of your giving — in the form of time, treasure, and talent — to the School for Children. Through widespread community engagement, I am pleased to report that we made great strides toward the realization of our ambitious goals. We reached 90 percent overall parent participation in the Annual Fund, a monumental 14 percent increase over the previous year, with eight classrooms achieving 100 percent participation and another six exceeding 90 percent; and, we raised nearly $100,000 in support of our STEAM program. You made this happen! Gifts made to the School for Children are indicative of the value that our current students, parents, faculty, alumni, and friends place in the Bank Street experience. Your support goes to work immediately, helping to ensure that we are able to provide financial aid, professional development, and top-notch programming for our students. Like other independent schools, we rely on philanthropy to bridge the gap between tuition dollars and the actual cost of educating each child. Our fiscal year ended on June 30, 2018, and I am pleased to report that in the 2017-18 school year, we raised a collective $676,862 from 621 donors. Thank you to everyone who participated in this effort. As always, our fundraising success is directly attributable to the strong leadership of a talented and committed group of parent volunteers, and to specific individuals who went above and beyond in leading various components of the annual fundraising campaign. In particular, I would like to thank David Beach and Michael Berger, Co-Chairs of the Annual Fund Committee; Steven Silverstein, Chair of the Fall Fair; Nicole Kahn, Chair of the Bank Street Bee; Juline Douglas, Janna Rosenberg, and Maria Vallejo-Nguyen, Co-Chairs of the Annual Auction and Benefit; and Elizabeth Goldman and Robert Packer, Co-Chairs of the Eighth-Grade Class Gift Committee. I would also like to thank all of the solicitors and volunteers, including the Parents Association, who helped with our philanthropy efforts throughout the year. A special thanks to Dione Enea and Rachael 7

Thank You From the Family Center Dear Alumni and Friends, We had an incredible school year! As the Director of the Bank Street Family Center/Home & Community Based Program, allow me to thank our supporters, family, friends, and staff that made a contribution to the 2017-2018 Annual Fund. We are excited to announce that we surpassed last year’s goal by raising more than $36,000. You have all contributed to our success in so many ways, and we cannot thank you enough. Here are a few highlights of our accomplishments: • The Family Center embarked on a new family communication system during the 2017-18 school year. After having spent the 2016-17 school year in discussions about the why of family communication, a committee of stakeholders determined the what – daily “I Notice” statements – and the how – a web application called Brightwheel. Feedback from the families has been positive, with one parent saying that receiving an “I Notice” statement is the “bright spot” of her day and another saying how valuable it is to receive “beautifully detailed information about a specific moment” in her child’s day. • As part of our family learning program, on February 15, Gabriel Guyton, Bank Street Graduate School Advisor/Instructor and former Family Center Teacher, facilitated a workshop entitled “Setting Limits: Navigating the Emotional Waters of Toddlers and Twos.” • On Tuesday, April 24, we hosted a Family Center reunion at Jonathan (Bank Street Trustee) and Joanna Cole’s home. This event brought together current families with families who attended the Family Center in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Ellen Galinsky, one of the founders of the Family Center, was honored for her important work. • On Saturday, May 5, the Bank Street Family Center hosted its annual Children’s Community Concert. We had over 160 attendees at this fun event! Donations to the Family Center’s Annual Fund ensure that the center provides an inclusive learning environment where children can explore, create, and learn in a nurturing community that values each child as an individual. With your assistance, our students experience the richness of our supportive early learning programs.

Thank You From Liberty LEADS Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank you, our generous donors, for your vital contributions. Our supporters include a network of an Advisory Board, foundation, city, state, and community organizations, alumni, staff, parents, and friends of Liberty LEADS. Every gift you made contributed to our shared vision of empowering underrepresented youth in New York City and provided students with access to the resources necessary to realize their full potential. Below are highlights of our accomplishments. As a result of the hard work and dedication, Liberty LEADS served 286 fifth- through 12th- grade students and provided 50 types of course offerings that focused on the academic, social, and emotional development. During Spring 2018, we supported our graduating seniors in the college application and transition process; 91 percent of the them graduated on time and 100 percent matriculated into college in September. Last summer, we also ran five successful programs for 120 students focused on math, STEM, social justice, environmental science, and college access. Liberty LEADS understands that in order for our children to succeed they need access to necessary resources, Bank Street has been instrumental in providing a safe, nurturing, and enriching environment to more than 1,500 students over the past 30 years. Our success is due to in part to our holistic approach that includes: Social Emotional Development: Our program nurtures social and emotional development while equipping our students with effective problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills that lead to lifelong success. College Preparation: Through our program, students receive resources and develop skills that lead to college acceptance. Families and students have access to financial aid workshops, admission advisement, transition workshops, SAT prep, and individualized support. We also facilitate college tours to ensure that students are pursuing schools that best meet their interests, needs, and long-term goals. Leadership: We inspire our students to think critically about issues that affect them and their communities. Students in our program find their voices and take on leadership roles that make a difference in their communities. Social Justice: We are deeply responsive to our students’ lived experiences. Students participate in writing classes, seminars, and counseling groups to discuss and critically analyze current social events.

STEM: Focusing first on the students and their real-world challenges and problems, we aim to guide student learning by working for an extended period of time so that we can investigate and respond to a complex question, challenge, or problem. This active learning style builds enthusiasm for academic concepts (ELA, Math, Science) and expands content knowledge while remediating skill deficits. Again, thank you to all who graciously supported our program this past year and for providing an unparalleled educational experience for our students and their families. Through your generosity, Liberty LEADS continues to fulfill its promise in enhancing the intellectual exploration and growth of our students and the hard-work of our exceptional staff! Warm regards,
Ana Tiburcio Director, Liberty LEADS

Bank Street College of Education Endowment The impact of creating endowments is enormous for our students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders at Bank Street. Currently, with over 90 endowments at our institution, these funds support scholarships for students in the Family Center, School for Children, and Graduate School, professional development for faculty and staff, programs and events at Bank Street, teacher and artist residencies, and operating costs for the institution. An endowment is a way for donors to leave a lasting legacy that will benefit Bank Street students, faculty, and staff in perpetuity. Endowing a fund allows the principal to remain intact. Income from responsibly investing the principal provides a permanent funding source that supports the endowment’s purpose. If you are interested in starting an endowment or learning more, please contact Chase McNamee, Stewardship Manager, at cmcnamee@ bankstreet.edu or 212-961-3380.

The Pemberton Society: A Legacy of Progress In 1916, Bank Street College was founded on the idea of building an educational experience that centered on this question: “What kind of environment best suits students’ learning and growth?” Nearly 90 years later in 2005, Lucia Jack, a retired Bank Street staff member, and 12 other dedicated Bank Street alumni, trustees, and friends of the College came together for the Pemberton Society’s first official meeting. With an intentional focus, they asked this resounding question: “How do we not only understand what kind of environment best suits students’ learning and growth, but also, how do we increase access and equity in education and provide a voice for students and alumni of color?”
fierce independence and that she always had a positive outlook. I try to channel some of those things and to learn that even though you may be challenging the system or trying to right some wrongs, you need to include a positive energy that runs parallel to your conviction.” Pemberton encouraged her close friend Cora Miles, GSE ’86, to become a founding Pemberton Society member. Miles said, “I felt her support immediately, she was very encouraging and inspiring for me — and always an advocate.” To honor Pemberton’s memory, Jack and other stakeholders came together in 2005 to refocus their voice and advocacy for students and alumni of color. Jack’s enthusiasm made her a natural fit, and she became the Society’s energetic new leader.
The Pemberton Society was named in honor of Priscilla E. Pemberton (GSE ’66), a former Bank Street faculty and staff member who touched the lives of countless teachers, students, and leaders during her time at Bank Street. The Society’s work to create and promote a more diverse community at Bank Street is a living and loving memorial to Pris’s life, work, and ideals. Current Chair of the Society and her niece, Cheryl Pemberton-Graves, described her Aunt Pris as an admirable leader and friend: “I remember her
Miles says, “Lucia would say to a number of us, ‘Yes, you’re a leader! Do it, get started, I’ll work with you!’” Pemberton-Graves echoed, stating, “Lucia identified, knew, encouraged, supported, and enabled the talent and the creativity of each person.” 29
At the same time, Jack and the Pemberton Society members stood together as they focused on increasing scholarships for African-American students and supporting current students and alumni of color. Pemberton-Graves recalls, “At Pemberton Society receptions, there we were at a lectern in the lobby, all of us, the whole Pemberton Society standing together. That symbolized that we are all in this together, we’re all important, and we’re all expected and encouraged to be our best and do our best.” Through this incredible work, the Society raised funds and fully endowed two Graduate School diversity scholarships: the Priscilla E. Pemberton Memorial Scholarship and the Joyce and David Dinkins Tribute Scholarship. The Society also funded a writing assistance program for current Graduate School students through its Lucia Henley Jack Student Support Fund. This fundraising effort has had a positive impact on many students of color in the Graduate School. Since the introduction of these two funds, at least two students of color have been awarded a scholarship each year to attend the Graduate School. In addition to their extraordinary fundraising, the Society focused on “friend-raising” and building a closeknit community while raising awareness of its diversity work. Miles said, “At the time, Mayor David Dinkins was very much involved. Here was a man of color who has accomplished so very much, and he was still out there giving. That memory of having him and his wife, who were very accomplished but very reachable, very accessible, very relatable, giving back. I think it’s like a circle that goes out and circles back to others.” The Pemberton Society also planned its first Black History Month program for the College community, including an exhibit in the Bank Street lobby throughout the month February. “It was a time when Black History was celebrated only in February,” said Miles. “But Lucia expanded that. When I went into the meeting two weeks ago [in 2018], there it is, a sign in the lobby, ‘Black History Month is every month’, and that says a lot.” Upon becoming Chair in 2015, Pemberton-Graves and other dedicated members, including Miles and Leslie Martinez, GSE ’12, reconvened with 30
a renewed energy toward its originating mission: to expand diversity in the Bank Street student body, faculty, and pedagogical discourse and to increase financial and academic support for students of color. “I’ve been entrusted with the responsibility of perpetuating the work of my aunt, Priscilla Pemberton, and her legacy of service around education and social justice,” said Pemberton-Graves. She and the other members of the Society are building on the work that the Society has done to move these initiatives forward. “We took another look at the vision and mission statements in light of the changes that Shael and his team brought to the organization and at the things that the Pemberton Society’s members wanted. We made it more succinct and acknowledged that the vision has always been for a diverse and culturally responsive community at Bank Street and helping students of color succeed.” Quiana Jackson, a current GSE student in the Infant and Family Development and Early Intervention Program, received the Joyce & David Dinkins Tribute Scholarship. “The Society strives for equity and representation within the institution, and that has impacted my studies at Bank Street — to know that there are people trying to make changes. It helps you feel a bit more at ease, especially for the next generation of educators of color that will walk through those doors. I believe the Pemberton Society continues to push Bank Street into the space that it has claimed to occupy for so many years. Bank Street prides itself on diversity and inclusion, but when you walk into the building is that what you see? When you look into a graduate classroom is that what you see? I believe the Pemberton Society continues to call Bank Street out in the best way and keeps us on our toes to strive for more — to be sure that the institution is reflective of its own ideology and philosophies.” The Society continues to build and grow connections within the Bank Street community as it partners with Dr. Wendi Williams, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, on her work with students of color. The Students of Color Affinity Group in the Graduate School of Education offers students an opportunity to speak to their experience of being a numeric minority in the College. Students are provided a space to integrate their experience of course work and field work experiences, along with the work of the Graduate School on topics such as racial literacy and the 31
social justice implications for their development as educators in a context that feels comfortable and supportive of their socio-cultural positionality.
bring in more students through scholarships and to make the Society more of a visible presence at Bank Street. This includes working with Dr. Wendi Williams’ program, raising awareness and accessibility, and using the Society as a resource where by everybody knows about us.”
Pemberton-Graves hopes to increase their work with Bank Street and its Alumni of Color group to advance the vision and mission of the Pemberton Society.
As the Pemberton Society moves forward with plans to engage with alumni and students of color throughout the year, they hope to continue to be a voice and advocate on campus.
“I think that our work and connections with Dr. Williams and her engagement with students is a natural opportunity to link and to further integrate the collaborations and the conversation,” Pemberton-Graves said. “I think there’s a lot of enrichment to come from integrating Pemberton with the work that Dr. Williams is doing. This conversation is going to continue and enrich all of us, really. It can have a ripple effect throughout the college.”
“It is important to let students of color know that they’re not alone,” said Miles. “They have potential and that adds value to the whole college and to their communities. Whatever their community is, however wide it is, they have leadership possibilities and opportunities and talents and skills to make their community more focused on a social justice perspective. They have power to do this and to be their best selves — and move their community.”
Pemberton-Graves added, “When you have a space with just the Students of Color and the Alumni of Color, I think that has an effect on their psyche and on their ability to succeed. So, in having people of color joining Pemberton Society to support the fundraising for the society’s scholarships, support mentoring, and for their presence to be known and felt, I think it’s important for students of color currently at Bank Street. What jumps to mind is to

Bank Street Community Gathers for 2018 Annual Dinner On April 18, almost 400 Bank Street supporters and community members gathered at the American Museum of Natural History for the 2018 Annual Dinner, a yearly event dedicated to raising awareness and support of the College’s work championing positive change in the field of education. Titled “The First One Thousand Days of Life,” the celebratory event recognized Bank Street’s many contributions to improving learning for all children with a special focus on recent efforts to help support increased access to the high-quality childcare experiences that offer infants and toddlers a strong and healthy foundation for future learning and social-emotional development. The event honored Jeffrey I. Sussman, President of Property Group Partners and longtime Trustee at Bank Street College of Education. As a parent of School for Children and Graduate School of Education alumni and a current grandparent of students in the School for Children and Family Center, Mr. Sussman was recognized as a passionate proponent for using education as a tool for developing community-minded citizens and broader social change. After a cocktail hour in the museum’s landmark Theodore Roosevelt Rotunda, guests enjoyed a meal and the evening’s program in the iconic Milstein Hall of Ocean Life. After remarks by Dinner Co-Chair and Chair of the Board of Trustees Yolanda Ferrell-Brown, Bank Street’s President Shael Polakow-Suransky, GSE ’00, took to the stage to share a powerful call for strengthening the care and education of our nation’s youngest children, noting that the first 1,000 days of life provide a powerful window of opportunity for growth and development.
