Thank You from the President Dear Friends,

Our accomplishments are not possible without the generous support of our donors. Gifts to our four Annual Funds (Bank Street Annual Fund, Family Center Annual Fund, School for Children Annual Fund, and Graduate School Annual Fund) help support many of our new initiatives at the forefront of progressive education. Every dollar matters because it directly supports our students, our faculty, financial aid, special programs, and a variety of other essential functions.

As I enter my fourth year as Bank Street’s president, I am proud that the culture of philanthropy and volunteerism at Bank Street is stronger than ever. I want to share my deep appreciation for our loyal alumni, families, faculty, staff, friends, and corporate, foundation, and community partners and to all members of our Board of Trustees—I am truly grateful to all of you who have supported Bank Street College of Education’s work.

Please take a moment to browse the 2016-2017 Annual Funds Honor Roll and meet our donors and volunteers. On behalf of the entire Bank Street community, I am deeply grateful for your loyal commitment and support.

With your support, we are expanding the boundaries of what is possible at Bank Street. I am delighted to share some of our recent accomplishments.

Warmly,

• The Bank Street Education Center continues its work to transform schools through professional development and strategic planning partnerships with nine public school districts working with more than 6,400 educators to create positive change for 400,000 children. This year, we have worked in New York City, Newark, New Haven, Cleveland, and we launched a new network of urban districts across New York State.

Shael Polakow-Suransky, GSE ‘00 President, Bank Street College of Education

• This past spring, Bank Street launched the first cohort of our new Guttman Center for Early Care & Education. The Guttman Center has an ambitious goal—stop the achievement gap before it starts by building loving and enriching environments for infants and toddlers in high-poverty communities. Building from the researchbased practices that inform our powerful infancy master’s degree program and grounded in a deep partnership with the community it serves, the Guttman Center provides onsite coaching and classes for early care practitioners who work with infants and toddlers in East New York, Brooklyn. • Our School for Children has a new dean. Jed Lippard just finished his inaugural year and has engaged the faculty in thoughtful conversations on strengthening classroom practice through purposeful, reflective, and deliberate instructional feedback. • Our Graduate School continues to expand its programs designed to serve aspiring teachers who plan to work in high need communities. Bank Street hosted its Annual Dinner on May 16 on Ellis Island with a special focus on the College’s new Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program, which prepares New York City teachers to work with the city’s 142,000 English Language Learners.

Our Mission The mission of Bank Street College is to improve the education of children and their teachers by applying to the educational process all available knowledge about learning and growth, and by connecting teaching and learning meaningfully to the outside world. In so doing, we seek to strengthen not only individuals, but the community as well, including family, school, and the larger society in which adults and children, in all their diversity, interact and learn. We see in education the opportunity to build a better society.

Thank You from the School for Children Dear Alumni and Friends, It is my great privilege to present the School for Children Donor Honor Roll for the 2016-17 school year. As tuition dollars only cover a portion of the cost of providing a topnotch education to our children, we are dependent on the generous support, volunteerism, and philanthropy of our vital network of friends, family, and alumni. Our fiscal year ended on June 30, 2017, and I am pleased to announce that in the 2016-17 school year, we raised a collective $662,071 from 547 donors.

The parent participation for the 2016-17 School for Children Annual Fund was 76%. As many of you know, the rate of giving is meaningful apart from the amount of money that is raised, as it serves as a barometer of the current success and future strength of any independent school. As we move forward into 2017-18, you will be hearing more about the importance of giving and building our culture of philanthropy. Every gift counts and is greatly appreciated.

• Facilities Renovations: With renovations to the second and third floors having been completed last summer, this summer has seen a thorough refresh of the fourth floor and a complete redesign and rebuild of the seventh floor, new home to the Upper School. We are particularly excited about the state-of-the-art science lab that will enhance our efforts to provide immersive and hands-on STEM programming to our oldest students, and we look forward to creative ways to repurpose the existing lab on the fourth floor for use for all students. • Staffing Updates: I am pleased to share that Kristen Worrell has joined my team as the new Director of Development and Alumni Relations for Children’s Programs, coming most recently from the IDEAL School and before that City & Country, LREI, and Columbia University. I am also pleased to share that Yanil Perez has been promoted to the new role of SFC Events Manager, reporting to Ashaki Charles, Associate Vice President of Development, and will continue to bring her skill, passion, and creativity to our development efforts. Along with Ashaki and her team in DERO, we can look forward to a great 2017-18 school year.

Once again, hearty and heartfelt gratitude for your ongoing and generous contributions to the Bank Street School for Children. Without your dedication of time, treasure, and talent, we would not be nearly the vibrant and thriving community that we are. On behalf of our students and staff, I thank you and look forward to another wonderful year of growth and learning ahead.

As always, our fundraising success this year is directly attributable to the strong leadership of this year’s network of parent volunteers, and to specific individuals who went above and beyond in leading various components of the annual fundraising campaign. In particular, I would like to thank Andrea Goren and Eric Komoroff, CoChairs of the Development Committee; Erik Linton and Steven Silverstein, Co-Chairs of the Fall Fair; Mary Pat Draddy, Russell Granet, Emily Stein, and Todd Zinn, Co-Chairs of the Annual Auction and Benefit; and Rose Klein Young and Margarita Viani, Co-Chairs of the Graduating Class Gift. I would also like to thank all of the solicitors and volunteers who helped with our philanthropy efforts during the year, and last but not least, the Parents Association and its leadership that benefit our entire community. Thank you to Dione Enea and Carol Johnson, last year’s PA Co-Presidents.

All best, always—

Jed Lippard Dean of Children’s Programs Head of the School for Children

As we turn the pages to the 2017-18 school year, I am eager to share a couple of exciting developments that will give shape and direction to the important work that lies ahead: • School for Children Strategic Planning: Having completed a robust listening tour and several rounds of community engagement this past spring, we are now into the heart of our strategic prioritization efforts. The Strategic Planning Task Force began its work in July and will be ramping up throughout the fall. By the spring of 2018, we look forward to having identified and committed to a finite number of ambitious yet achievable objectives that will guide our thinking, planning, and resource allocation for the next several years.

Thank You from the Family Center Dear Friends, We had an incredible school year! As Director of the Bank Street Family Center/Home & Community Based Program, allow me to thank our supporters, family, friends, and staff that made a contribution to the 2016-17 Family Center Annual Fund. You have all played a crucial role in our success in the past year and we are so grateful. Donations to the Family Center Annual Fund ensure that the center provides an inclusive learning environment where children can explore, create, and learn in a nurturing community that values who each child is as an individual. With your assistance, our students experience the richness of our supportive early learning programs. Whether you have given to the Family Center Annual Fund for many years, have just made your first gift, or intend to do so, we are truly thankful for what you make possible for our students. The Family Center is thriving because of your generous gifts, which have made a profound impact on our community. You have shown your vote of confidence in what the Family Center can do for future generations. Sincerely,

Jeannette Corey Director, Bank Street Family Center/Home & Community Based Program

Thank You from the Graduate School of Education Dear Alumni and Friends, Bank Street is a special place, and I feel privileged to lead the Graduate School of Education. Thank you for your continuing interest in and support of our programs during the 2016-17 academic year. Every gift contributed to enhancing Bank Street’s leadership in progressive education. Thank you for being a part of our community and for supporting the Graduate School Annual Fund. With your support, the Graduate School has been able to engage in many activities. In June, we held our second annual Alumni of Color dinner. Attending were 19 graduates from a full range of our programs. They shared the wonderful work they are doing in the world of education and ideas about how they see Bank Street’s presence being supportive of their work. As we continue to deepen our commitment to creating a more diverse student body in the Graduate School, we value the experiences and perspectives of former students to help shape our efforts to make Bank Street a diverse and supportive learning community for all students. This dinner was a wonderful opportunity for such dialogue. All through the year, faculty and student services staff have been “practicing what they preach” by studying their own work and reflecting on some of their core pedagogical practices. For example, using evidence such as student work, descriptions of practice, and classroom observations, faculty studied questions about topics such as the ways developmentalinteraction is put into practice and what it looks like in our classrooms, how they model practices they hope their students will use in the classroom, or how faculty support students in applying theory to practice. Taking an inquiry stance to our work is part of our ongoing efforts to grow and improve the education we provide students. Of course, there are our efforts to develop and grow programs. In addition to the TESOL and Adolescent Special Education programs we now have on the books, we have developed a new adolescent mathematics teacher education program that will start in the fall of 2018. And, during Summer Session 2, the second cohort of the Early Childhood Urban Education Initiative began their program. This program is an important part of the Graduate School’s efforts to expand our reach in New York City. We are now planning a research project that will help us learn how well our pedagogical practices translate to settings beyond that of 112th Street. Thank you for believing in the power of philanthropy and for supporting the Graduate School Annual Fund. Your generosity and commitment have made an important difference in bettering the lives of our students and enhancing the academic quality of our programs. Best wishes,

Cecelia Traugh Dean, Bank Street Graduate School of Education
