LUTO SANS —the straight companion of the Pluto Family—was designed by Hannes von Döhren in 2012. This clear sans serif family is based on the Pluto architecture, and it still has a hint of the friendly feeling the quirky Pluto conveys. With its geometric forms and large x-height, it is perfect for long texts in small sizes and usage on screens. Both Pluto Sans and Pluto have the same range of weights and styles and can perfectly be used together.
Pluto Sans is equipped for complex, professional typography. The OpenType fonts have an extended character set to support Central and Eastern European as well as Western European languages. Each font includes alternate letters, fractions, lining & tabular numbers, scientific superior & inferior figures, and a set of arrows. Hannes von Döhren says, “A principle of HVD is that we want to deliver fonts of the highest quality level: optically AND technically.” As the founder and primary designer of HVD, Hannes has worked to establish and uphold this standard since he changed his focus from graphic design to type in 2008. Within
the last years he has released several type families like Pluto, Livory, FF Mark, Reklame Script, and Brandon Grotesque, which is one of the most successful typefaces of our time. In 2011 he received the Cer tificate of Excellence in Type Design from the Type Directors Club NY. So, what is the key to Hannes von Döhren’s success? Perhaps it is the standpoint from which he approaches each type project. “I am a full time type designer,” he says, “but because I have a graphic design background, I always look at typefaces from the graphic designers perspective too. Of course typefaces should be beautiful, but they should also work perfectly in the environment that they will be used in.” Bao Quoc Phan is a graphic designer and multidisciplinary artist based in Portland, Oregon, USA. Born in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, he immigrated to the United States in 2015. Currently at Portland State University, Bao pursues double degrees in Music—Classical Voice, and Arts—Graphic Design. His practices embrace both artistic expression and technical execution at the highest level, drawing from diverse perspectives and experience across cultures and disciplines.
