Augmented Standard is a way to produce high quality built environment by combining Base Types - simple parametric components that define each of three building types and various Modification and Analysis tools. Augmented Standard aims to achieve the contextual precision and complexity of custom projects by leveraging the new possibilities brought by software systems.

On the one hand, standard projects has always had a way to be slightly modified to be tailored for a certain site (e.g.sizewise or by alteration of the first floor). In that sense Augmented Standard is a continuation of the tradition of standard design.

On the other hand, despite more and more contextual factors that put demand on form are becoming softwerised and immediately available (such as climate data or zoning regulations), standard designs have not yet made an important step towards being able to respond to that information.

1. High Quality Built Environment

There has been a lot of work done to figure out how to make better cities in the modern world: from writings of urban theorists, such as Jane Jacobs, Alex Lehnerer or Christopher Alexander, to the work of commercial research institutions or consultancies, such as Strelka KB, Arup Foresight or Space Syntax. In this proposal we attempt to integrate that knowledge into the process of formation of the Augmented Standard by formulating a set of Patterns. Each of those is presented in the form of an image, recommendatory text and a reference to the source. The patterns are there to put demand on the form of the Augmented Standard. If the Base Form cannot satisfy an important Pattern, it is likely to need a Modifier.

2. Base Forms Base Forms are simple parametric components that define each of three building types. Each Base From defines geometric logic of the future building: units’ variation and depth and width, the location of elevators and stairs, possible connections with other buildings. Base Forms define what building can and cannot do - their dispositions, that are presented next to the drawings. Parametric essence of Base Forms assures their flexibility. The Base Form can be shrinked or extended, a number of floors can be added, the composition of units altered. Base forms are capable of being directly translated into buildings, though for better contextual fit they are to be combined with a number of modifiers.
AUGMENTED STANDARD
3. Modifiers Modifiers come into play, when Base forms cannot satisfy the demands put by one or a number of patterns. Modifiers can address different anatomic parts of a Base Form - from nearby territories and the use of the ground floor, to the facades’ logics and the way the upper part of a building is solved. N
