The moment when the models of the competition participants of the BarberSociety Young Talent Battle did a show round on the BarberSociety Live stage on 23 April last, gave me a wow effect! Such creative hairstyles I saw. Our host Chris Foster was also impressed. That young talent had the guts to create such daring hairstyles made me feel hopeful. I think it is wonderful to be able to give this young talent a stage at BarberSociety Live, they are the future of our profession.

Creativity was also conspicuous in the Battle of the Pros where Greek Tilemachos Maris deservedly ran away with the title. Live competitions cannot disguise anything, there is no retouching or AI involved, it is the real deal! Therefore, all contest participants who participated in the Battles should be proud of themselves, they challenged themselves and tried to push beyond their limits. Kudos! Much respect also goes to our line-up of top barbers from home and abroad who gave educational and inspiring shows on stage! INTERVIEW WITH L3VEL3 CO-FOUNDER AND SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER AROD

Yadiel Alberto Rodriguez, better known as Arod, is a leading barbering entrepreneur who is taking the industry to the next level. Originally from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, he moved with his family to the US when he was 15. Now age 34, he’s been passionate about barbering for some 20 years. His dad gave him his first pair of clippers when he was 14. He first cut his own hair, then started cutting his friends and family’s hair for free, then started cutting classmates’ hair for $5 a pop.

After serving in the US Army, he explored his employment opportunities and decided to pursue a career in barbering. It’s 2011 and the social media revolution is just unfolding and Arod is on top of it. That same year he meets Jay Nouri at a hair show and, recognizing Arod’s social media savvy, asked him to be an ambassador for his distributorship.

Since then he’s gone from success to success. He and Jay Nouri went on to co-found L3VEL3 in 2020. With 2 million followers on social media, Arod is leveraging his presence to promote education, career advancement and the barbering industry as a whole. We met up with Arod to talk about career-building, creating products by and for barbers and following your dreams.

DIY barbering

Arod Rodriguez started off early in barbering. He grew up in Puerto Rico and says that grooming, fresh haircuts and looking good are part of the culture. Arod noticed that his hair was growing out in between his weekly visits to the barber, so he decided to take matters into his own hands: “I was 14 and going to the barbershop once a week but couldn’t afford to go twice a week. I wanted to look fresh every day, so I decided to learn to use clippers. My dad bought me a pair and I learned how to clean up my cut in between barbershop visits. Soon afterwards, I started cutting my own hair.”

He took to barbering like a duck to water. Arod explains: “I started cutting my friends and family to get experience. At that time, we moved to Florida for a better education for me and my siblings. When I went to high school in the US, I’d become better at barbering and started charging five dollars for haircuts. I was able to apply the experience in barbering and customer service I gained during that period when I started working at a barbershop.”

In the Army now

While Arod enjoyed barbering, he didn’t at first see it as a career path. “It was a hobby. It didn’t seem like a way to make a living and build a future.”

He continues, “Back then barbers weren't respected like we are today. I didn’t want to disappoint my parents and wanted to make something of my life. That’s when a buddy wanted to join the military, so I ended up enlisting in 2009.”

Arod kept up his barbering skills during this period. “I cut my friends hair for ten dollars.

I liked doing it and it reminded me of being a barber.” He served for nearly five years and was deployed during his last year. On his return from the deployment, it was time to consider his options.

“I needed to decide on which career I wanted to pursue outside the military. I envisioned my next move, and it turned out to be cutting hair. So I set up my living room as a barber shop.”

Off to a flying start

Arod didn’t waste any time kick-starting his new career. “I told my friends I was cutting hair professionally and asked them to come check me out.” After those first days in his living room, Arod got a job at a barbershop. He also took an active interest in the barbering industry: “I started going to trade shows and competitions where people

saw my work. Social media hit the scene and I began growing on social media. It was attracting new clients beyond my circle of friends. So it was a period of growth. It was the dawn of the revolution of social media, and I was on top of it.”

Marketing excellence

Arod’s success on social media was gaining attention. A defining moment in his career came when he met Jay Nouri at a hair show. “I met him at an event, and we exchanged contact details. He was a distributor for a brand. He reached out and said: ‘We love your work. Check out our

products.’ I checked out the products, liked them and became an ambassador.”

It's the start of a longstanding collaboration between Arod and Jay. “I performed the ambassador role for ten years. During that time, Jay noticed that I was different, and was excelling in the marketing, videos and social media I was creating. This led Jay Nouri to ask me to come on board as a partner for his men’s grooming line distributorship. Focusing on the marketing and ambassador side, I fulfilled the role for over a decade and learned so much during that period.”

Moving up a level

When the pandemic hit in 2020, Jay and Arod decided it was time to make their move. They gave their idea for the L3VEL3 wet product line for professional barbers and stylists wings. “We set about creating our own brand. We went full force to develop and manufacture our products created by and for barbers. So creating the formulations and conducting all the tests and market research.”

L3VEL3 has achieved incredible growth and expansion in just three years. Arod explains: “The acceptance has been amazing. Today we're in 25 to 30 countries worldwide. Barbers respect our brand because we provide both a great quality product and add value by helping them learn how to provide a full service from the haircut to the product and the experience. I’m the CMO in charge of the marketing campaigns. It’s my responsibility to ensure consistent messaging and a solid connection between the brand and our customers.”

Level of distinction

What makes L3VEL3 stand out?

“We genuinely care about the barber, their services, their growth. So we invest in creating programmes for barbers to partner with us. You get full online access to thousands of videos on how to use the products and implement them in your barbershops and how to run a successful business. We all benefit from it; the barbers,

the clients and L3VEL3. It’s a win-win-win. We win together and grow together.”

Career-building

Arod sees more career paths opening up in the barbering industry: “As the industry grows, more jobs and career lanes are opening up. It’s key to get a head start on these developments. The people with an edge are those who go to barber events, share information, take education classes and engage with the community. Look at me, I created my own space and am opening new doors that future generations can go through and take benefit from.”

He says you first must get the basics right and from there the sky is the limit. “The roots are getting your client fresh, feeling good, smelling good, looking good. And after you’ve mastered that, you can go anywhere. If you can dream it, you can do it. It all comes down to how much work you put into it.”

Never give up What is Arod’s advice to the barbering community?

“Never quit and never stop following your dreams. You decide how far you go in life. We’re the ones who determine when we start and when we finish. Follow your dreams and stay true to your heart. If you do that consistently, you'll see results. Maybe in two years, maybe in ten years, but you’ll see results.”

With its 6th edition, BarberSociety Live once again proved to be the hotspot for the barber industry. Over 700 visitors from home and abroad came to the Westergas in Amsterdam on Sunday 23 April to be inspired by great brands, a fantastic lineup of national and international barber talents as well as two battles. The standard was high in terms of creativity. This was visible both in the hair creations of the barbers who gave shows on stage and also in the two battles where barbers competed with each other in front of a live audience and demonstrated their skills and creativity. By winning the international BarberSociety Battle, Greek Tilemachos Maris became BarberSociety Winner of the Year 2023. The winner of the BarberSociety Young Talent Battle was Drenthe College with Temesgen Kahsu Tsehaye. The atmosphere was really great and the pleasure of seeing each other and exchanging experiences created a positive energy.

Inspiration

Inspiring and educational shows were given by icons from the UK such as Sid Sottung, Robert Braid and The Great British Barber Bash, as well as talents from America (DrasticArtBarbering), Greece (Joy's Birth education and Konstantinos & Stratos), Italy (Tonino Esposito), Belgium (Kevin Boon) and the Netherlands (Barber Birdman and the team from Black Raven). It was top-level creativity, from traditional to modern hairstyles and everything in between. It also covered other important issues in the profession. For instance, Kevin Boon spoke about customers, service and sanity and Sid Sottung talked about his holistic approach to

the profession. In addition, Miguel Perez of Hevie Enhancement showed the most natural 'beard enhancement' on stage in an all-American fashion

and gave demos in the main hall. As is tradition, Chris Foster was the host and once again presented the event in his own unique way: full of humour, confident and energetic.

Photos, tattoos and more

Besides fine brands and suppliers showcasing the latest men's hair care products and tools, there was also a focus on lifestyle brands. From leather hand-dyed shoes to multidisciplinary street artist Freakz Du Artz. Furthermore, visitors could have their portrait artfully captured,

drink a good whiskey at the Jack Daniel's bar, eat at food trucks and get a well-stocked goodie bag. As the cherry on the cake, former 'Best Barber Europe' Dieuwertje Prins created tattoos of the barber polethe BarberSociety logowith which she made around 10 barbers happy.

The BarberSociety Battles

Brave students and barbers from home and abroad competed for honours and great prizes at the WesterUnie of the Westergas during the BarberSociety Battles. At the BarberSociety Battle, Greek Tilemachos Maris ran away with first prize, Dutchman Khalid Sedo came second and German Dace Jefferson third. The BarberSociety Young Talent Battle in cooperation with Dutch barber schools was won by Temesgen Kahsu Tsehaye of Drenthe College. Like last year, Barber School Amsterdam was among the winners. Sylviën van Goorsel again won third

prize and Muhammed Gürkan Tasci second prize. The national and international judges praised the creativity of the hairstyles! Winners had the chance to win prizes from the super prize pool worth more than €9,000! Cash prizes, hair and facial care products, clippers, scissors and even an all-inclusive two-day barber camp in Hungary. The battles were supported by American Crew and re.solve skincare.

De Praatkamer (NL), also won the Freestyle category which was all about a total look. With only two years of experience in the profession, this is a special achievement: "Thanks to my colleagues, I am here and I am super proud of that." With his second prize, Khalid became the lucky winner of the Barber Camp of the Barber on the Road in Hungary. This prize was offered to him by founder Lillu Schneiker, who won second prize in the 2018 BarberSociety Battle. Meanwhile, Khalid went there in May and had a fantastic and inspiring experience!

“Wow, what a cool day 23 April was! Nothing beats personal contact, as shown by the many positive comments we received from everyone! Our social timelines were flooded with cool videos and beautiful messages. Barbers are proud of their profession and enjoy showing it. It was great to see our international visitors back again too. Last year we just came out of the lockdown and this year, fortunately, that was no longer an obstacle! It was one big barber reunion and that is just very special.

But also on stage, we were delighted with the top national and international talents in the profession who presented their creative skills in impressive shows. With technical precision, passion and creativity, the teams on stage set the standard at the highest international level. This sixth edition of BarberSociety Live was one which was full of inspiration and gives many barbers motivation again. It's wonderful that we can contribute to this. The Greek Tilemachos Maris (40) became the BarberSociety Winner of the Year 2023! He convincingly won the BarberSociety Battle on Sunday, April 23, during BarberSociety Live. As well as taking the top honour, he also won the categories 'Cleanest Fade' and 'Old School Scissor Cut,' earning him €1,500 in prize money and swag boxes from sponsors worth €5,000! Tilemachos was up against competitors from Belgium, Germany, Greece, and the Netherlands. Dutchman Khalid Sedo (De praatkamer) came in second place, and German Dace Jefferson (Barbier Jefferson) took third place. The judging panel consisted of Robert Braid (UK), Drastic (USA), and Dennis Kil and Nero de Boer (NL). Tilemachos has been in the barber industry for 25 years and has been running Mr. Barber&Shop for 7 years in Iraklion, the capital of the Greek island of Crete.

I felt satisfied, happy, and blessed!

Could you tell me a bit about your background?

“I became involved in the field of barbering due to my family environment. Both my father and my older brothers were barbers, and I learned the basics from my father when I was 15 years old. This is how I developed my skill in scissor cuts because Old School Scissor cuts were popular during that time. Subsequently, I attended a public barber school to obtain my degree in barbering. I worked at my brothers' barbershop for 17 years before opening my own establishment, Mr. Barber&Shop, in Iraklion, Crete, which I have owned for the past 7 years. Currently, I have 7 employees. My love and passion for this profession are evident

in my barbershop, and I discuss this with every potential employee before hiring them. I strive to make each customer at my shop feel unique and special by providing a customized haircut that suits their individual style and characteristics.”

What do you like most about being a barber?

“Every day, I approach my work with the same enthusiasm as if it were my first day on the job. I love the creativity that comes with being a barber and the opportunities it provides to learn about new trends and meet more people and other barbers from around the world. Additionally, I have a strong affinity for educating myself and others on how

What did you think of the Battles?

“There were notably more women in this edition, which I consider to be a positive development. During the battle, I witnessed a lot of passion and hard work, as well as the artistry of some participants. It was super cool!”

Why do you think Tilemachos was the winner?

“His Old School cut was simply sublime, exceptionally well done. In addition, he executed the cleanest fade without rushing and secured the second place in the freestyle category with a fantastic model. In my opinion, this makes him the most well-rounded and deserving winner.”

Any tips?

“During the young talent battles, we saw beautiful pieces of craftsmanship, or rather, artwork, such as Temesgen's remarkable afro. Keep developing your skills and remain eager. Specifically for the women: claim your spot and showcase your abilities. Unleash your creativity!”

What developments are currently occurring i n the barber trade in Greece?

“In recent years, there has been significant growth and development in the barber industry, leading to higher standards for services provided.”

You have won several prizes in competitions. What motivates you to participate?

“Participating in competitions provides me with a sense of personal satisfaction as I strive to push my limits and discover my true potential under pressure.

I decided to compete in the BarberSociety Battle for the past 2 years because I believe it is a fair and prestigious competition that is worth participating in.”

How did you prepare for the Battle?

“I may not be the best person to offer advice on competition preparation because I ended up changing all the haircuts I had planned to present on the last day! Hahaha!”

Did you prepare differently for the BarberSociety Battle compared to the Greek competition?

“It varies from competition to competition because I always

aim to showcase something different.”

Were you nervous for the BarberSociety Battle?

“With my extensive experience, I can handle the pressure, but of course, I still felt a bit nervous to ensure everything went smoothly.”

Were you satisfied with your cuts during the competition?

“Absolutely!”

What inspired your haircut designs?

“I drew inspiration from my mentor, Andrea Amighetti, as well as my imagination and years of experience.”

How did you feel when you discovered that you were the BarberSociety Winner of the Year 2023?

“I felt satisfied, happy, and blessed!”

What was it like returning to Iraklion with all the prizes?

“When I arrived in Greece at midnight, my friends and employees surprised me at the airport and congratulated me for bringing the trophies back to Greece!”

What does the future hold for you? What are your plans for the next five years?

“I have many proposals for training newcomers in this profession, and I also aim to teach my oldest son, Elias, the trade so he can continue the family business, just as my father did for me.”

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

“In every barber's life, there comes a moment when we must test our skills, push our limits, and prove ourselves to the world. The arena of the barber tournament calls upon us to showcase our artistry, our creativity, and our dedication to the craft. It is an opportunity to demonstrate our ability to transform mere hair into masterpieces, shaping not only hairstyles but also the lives of our clients!

And remember, fear of failure is a common and natural human emotion. However, it is important to overcome or manage this fear in order to grow, learn, and achieve success!”

We have seen a lot of creativity in April at the BarberSociety Young Talent Battle during BarberSociety Live in Amsterdam! Out of the 19 students from Dutch schools across the country, Temesgen Kahsu Tsehaye from Drenthe College took home the trophy and received beautiful swag boxes from sponsors! The jury consisted of Dennis Kil (NL), Sid Sottung (UK), Nero de Boer (NL), and Tonino Esposito (IT). Temesgen (21), originally from Eritrea, lives in Coevorden and is in his final year of the hairdressing program at Drenthe College.

He works at Kapsalon Straq in Coevorden (NL), where he is mentored by the experienced owner Hakan Kanal, who has also participated in hairdressing competitions in the past. Temesgen fled Eritrea (Africa) all by himself at the age of 13 and eventually ended up in the Netherlands after a long journey. He is highly motivated to become the best in his field. Winning this prize is already a step in the right direction!

Can you tell me something about your background?

"When I was 13, I fled from Eritrea due to the political circumstances. There is no freedom there. When you turn 17/18, you are required to join the military, even if you are still in school. There is mandatory conscription, and as a young man, if you refuse to become a soldier, you will simply be arrested. It's truly a different world. Here, you have freedom; you can raise your voice and choose a career. None of that is possible there.

I fled alone from Eritrea to Ethiopia, then to Sudan, and then through the desert to Libya. From there, I went to Italy and lived with a foster family for 4 months.

But I didn't want to stay there; my plan was to go to the Netherlands. So, I left Italy, spent another month in an asylum center in Germany, and then I came to the Netherlands. The police took care of me and brought me to a foster mother in Coevorden. I still live in Coevorden, but not with my foster mother anymore. Fortunately, I was able to bring my family to the Netherlands, and now I live with my mother."

Why did you choose to pursue a career in hairdressing?

"When my father came to the Netherlands, he asked me to cut his hair. I knew absolutely nothing about cutting

hair; I had no idea! My father explained it to me and taught me. I actually enjoyed it and started cutting the hair of my friends and my brothers. I was studying something else at the time, but then I decided to enroll in the hairdressing program. I really enjoy cutting people's hair and find great pleasure in my work!"

How did you end up at Kapsalon Straq?

"I was looking for an internship position and walked into Kapsalon Straq. Initially, they didn't want to take on any more interns."

Owner Hakan Kanal adds, " We had bad experiences with our previous interns; they lacked motivation.

I was actually done with it. But then Temesgen walked in, and he came across as very spontaneous. So, we decided to give it a try with him. Temi is highly motivated, he's eager to create things. He even spends time at the salon outside of his internship hours. That says a lot. Sometimes, he brings friends along to cut their hair or to watch us work. That's why I'm motivated to invest my energy in him. I even offered him a job because he just finished his hairdressing program!" Temesgen says, "I'm really, really happy about that! It's genuinely enjoyable here. I'm grateful that Hakan gave me the opportunity to do my internship here." Hakan adds, "Kapsalon Straq is a mixed salon, but I specialize in men's hairdressing. I started as a model in international competitions when I was just 14 years old, and that's how I got into the field. I used to participate in many competitions myself and gained a lot of experience from them. I've been in the industry for 9 years now."

What do you consider important in the barbering profession?

Temesgen: "Making sure the customer leaves satisfied. Listening to the customer, being friendly, and being creative."

Why did you participate in the BarberSociety Battle?

"My boss gained a lot of experience from competitions in the past, and he thought it was important for me too."

Hakan: "Since I also did my hairdressing program at Drenthe College, I reached out to them. They asked if I could train another student who is currently interning with me, Nebiyu, for the Battle. It was quite special because Nebiyu has only been doing this for nine months, and he placed 3rd in the Freestyle category!"

How did you prepare for the battle?

"I practiced a lot in my free time. Practice, practice, and more practice!"

What inspired you for the freestyle hairstyle?

"Together with my boss, we discussed the style we were going for. We did a lot of research on the internet, and that's where we found the outfits as well."

Hakan: "The model was one of our customers, and Temi was fortunate to practice on his hair. We created a mood board and coordinated the outfit and hairstyle. I demonstrated the hairstyle once to show

the idea, but Temi had to do everything himself. I was even surprised by what Temi created; the end result was truly amazing!"

How did you feel about your performance?

"I was a bit nervous during the competition, especially when the judges came to observe. But when you are well-prepared, you just go for it. I truly, truly enjoyed participating! You also get to see beautiful things from others. I definitely want to participate again next year!"

How did you feel when it was announced that you were the winner?

"I had some expectations of making it to the top 3. But when they announced the names of the 3rd and 2nd place, and your name hasn't been called yet, the tension builds up!

Especially when it takes extra long before the name of the 1st place is announced, that's when it becomes stressful. Your heart really races. I was incredibly happy when I heard my name; it's indescribable! When you come back to work the next day, you feel different. You have gained more self-confidence.

And of course, there's a festive atmosphere. The mayor is coming soon; he wants to get a haircut from me. He saw on Facebook that I won! We received quite a bit of publicity. Local newspapers covered the story, and I also did an interview with the local radio, which was broadcasted live. I posted a video on TikTok of the moment when I won 1st place and went up on the stage, and it has already been viewed 181,000 times! I received a lot of positive feedback and gained new clients!" Hakan: "Considering the journey he has been through, literally, with his escape and everything he has experienced, I'm proud of what he has achieved now and that he is on the right path."

What is your dream?

"I will continue cutting hair at Hakan's salon. I see the salon as my own business; I feel equality, we are one team. I'm very happy to have ended up here! t's my dream to perhaps cut the hair of professional footballers in the future and to travel."

“I felt that there were such wonderful young talented future barbers at the competition. A variety of skills and styles that were shown. It was so hard to pick just one winner, as I felt they were all winners to me. I was very inspired by their standard of work at such a student level. I strongly recommend for more young talent to compete in next year’s competition.”

Why do you think Temesgen Kahsu Tsehaye became the winner?

“The judges felt his style and techniques were deserving of first place. His last model was the complete look which pushed him to win first place.”

Any tips?

“I would strongly recommend put as much effort into getting the right models beforehand. Try to practice on them and plan out your haircut wisely. Remember not to push your limit of understanding of the techniques but deliver exceptional quality. I recommend colouring the model beforehand as well to make him standout.”

I was told this by one of my clients who underwent Scalp Micro Pigmentation treatment with me. The results can be so realistic that even young children cannot tell it apart from real hair! And so, I have many other grateful clients who have shared their positive experience with Scalp Micro Pigmentation with me.

What is Scalp Micro Pigmentation?

Scalp Micro Pigmentation, also referred to as SMP, is a relatively unknown solution worldwide for men and women suffering from baldness, thin hair, alopecia or scarring caused by an accident or hair transplant.

This 'customised' treatment originated in England around 2008. Since then, the technique has been so refined and further developed that it is barely distinguishable from real hair. A thin, fast-moving needle is used to insert tiny microdots into the scalp that resemble a short-shaven hair stubble. This way, people with partially or completely bald heads can be given an optical shaven look. SMP can also optically fill in areas where less hair grows. For people with a form of Alopecia, a hair restoration is often the only solution. SMP offers a nice addition to this.

SMP is a so-called 'cosmetic tattoo'. I prefer to leave out the word 'tattoo' altogether

because it has nothing to do with a tattoo at all. This is because the scope and technique are not comparable.

Jen Winters has 20 years’ experience under her belt. Starting out in women’s hairdressing 18 years ago, she switched to barbering in 2016. A year later she opened Phoney Pony Barbers in Chelmsford, England. Jen is passionate about creating an inclusive and safe space. A place where the trans community, gay community, women and straight men feel at home. People from every walk of life exchange perspectives and share a laugh at Phoney Pony.

Winning the Great British Barber title in 2018 has brought her countless opportunities and she calls it the icing on the cake. She performed live with Brodie Raeside at this year’s BarberSociety Live in Amsterdam. She enjoys international events, but says her barbershop is where her heart is. Chatting rubbish

Jen started out in the industry straight out of school. “My mum got me a job as an apprentice because I didn't really know what else to do. She said: ‘I’ve got the perfect job for you, chatting rubbish and sweeping floors.’” She fell in love with it and stuck with it. She moved into barbering eight years ago: “I decided to take the leap to barbering. I made the decision when I was travelling around Australia. I basically reinvented myself. Upon my return, I opened Phoney Pony Barbers.”

Hairdressing and barbering in harmony

Jen sees hairdressing and barbering skills as complementary. “I don't think hairdressing and barbering skills are totally divided. I think it’s important to use all your skills.”

She’s says using professional cutting techniques, possibly in combination with clipper work,

produces the best result. “Many barbers focus on fading. You can do an amazing skin fade, but it’ll grow out in three days. So it’s important to your client that you focus on what’s on the top because they can control and style it. So if it’s not cut correctly, you're left with a bang-up skin fade. But you can't do anything with the top.”

Diversity is in Phoney Pony’s DNA. Jen explains: “It’s key to my shop. And I mean diversity across the board. Because inclusivity isn’t only for the trans community, the gay community, women and people of colour. It must also be a safe space for straight men.

Hair has no gender

Jen loves that all types of people find common ground in her barber chairs. Everyone is welcome. She says smiling: “If you’ve got hair or did or anything – we’ll cut it. That's it. Like it says on my website: hair has no gender. That can still be hard for some people, especially for women wanting a more masculine style. Or at the start of a trans man’s journey. Many places reject them, saying they don’t cut girls hair. It can be demeaning. Hyper masculinity in a shop can be too much for even a straight guy who

CEO on the other. And a bricklayer on one side and a girl in the other. They have their eyes opened to different things and that’s fantastic. But the bottom line is, if you’re offensive to anyone, we won't cut your hair. You come in, have your mind open, have a great haircut and that's it.”

Sexuality doesn’t affect skills

She says homophobia isn’t tolerated in her shop. She puts the hyper masculine image some barbershops present into perspective with the witty comment: “Every man likes to act big and tough until they accidentally graze their hand across a barber's dick when having their hair cut. I can say that we don’t have homophobia in our shop. Our manager Jacob

Kilgore is gay. And I’m gay. So we don't really have it in the shop anymore. But when I started out, there was some homophobia. I faced more prejudice because of my gender. ‘Oh, you're a girl. Can you cut hair?’ I think being a gay man in the industry is much harder than for a lesbian. But your sexuality doesn't affect your barber skills. If you want that person to cut your hair, it doesn’t matter who they're sleeping with.”

Smack ‘em around

Has Jen encountered discrimination as a woman working in barbering? “Oh, absolutely. Dealing with men can be an intimidating for a woman, because they don't always take you seriously. But you gradually learn how to handle it. Hold your ground. You don't have to change

who you are. This is who I am. So I always say: they’re in your chair. Smack ‘em around.

They like it. Get on with the job. Be blunt. Be aggressive. You want a haircut or not? And afterwards they say, ‘I got a fantastic haircut from a chick.’ Brilliant.”

my ideas. But my shop is my bread and butter. So it's important not to confuse the two. Performing is an adventure. Returning to the barber shop is coming home. It’s what pays my bills; I love my shop. My staff are my little Phoney Pony family. So it’s good to choose your focus and not try to do everything at once.”

Any plans to grow Phoney Pony? “No, there’s one Madonna, one Tina Turner, God rest her, and one Elvis. If you get too big, you could lose the quality and the atmosphere. I don't want to lose that intimacy we’ve got here.” She says there’s another plus

Stage presence

Having won the Great British Barber of the Year 2018 title, Jen is no stranger to international stages. She recently performed live with Brody Raeside at BarberSociety Live in Amsterdam. How was it? “The event was brilliant. The stage was great, with a fantastic big video screen at the back. There was a super vibe. It was an all-round great day.”

Jen enjoys taking part in barbering events but says it’s important to set priorities. “International events let me travel and share

Looking to the future

Where does Jen see herself five years from now? She replies laughing: “Oh, I hope I’m still breathing. But seriously, hopefully I’ll still be cutting hair, but you never know what’s around the corner.” She adds with a chuckle: “My partner is the tattoo apprentice at the tattoo parlour we have here. So maybe I’ll be a kept woman in five years.”

The current owner, Irene Pitzalis, is a friendly lady and wields clippers with great skill. She was brought up with the profession, even as an 8-year-old girl she helped wash the hair of her father Giovanni's clients. From the 1960s, her father worked at the place as a barber. AN EXTRAORDINARY BARBER STORY FROM THE NETHERLANDS

The bin in the corner

Durkje grew up in the same building where her father worked, above the barbershop, which had been called Hoeksema Kapper since its establishment in 1893. Next to the barbershop was a shop where her mother sold cigars, cigarettes and clogs. Durkje says: "I grew up with barbering. When I came out of school, I would get a cup of tea with a biscuit and then I loved sitting in the barbershop. The place was always busy, not only because people were getting haircuts, but also because they came there to chat and tell tall tales. They bought smokes from my mother and then lit their cigarettes in the barbershop. So it was always blue with smoke there. I had to sit on the bin in the corner and got to hear all those stories. It was great, those men had so much fun and there were quite a few laughs!" Durkje continues: "My great-grandfather Ynze Hoeksema started the barbershop 130 years ago, in 1893. He married Rigtje Salverda and also ran a shoemaking shop on the first floor, where he also rented out mourning veils. Unfortunately, Ynze died at the age of 47. My grandfather Sjouke Hoeksema was only 14 when he and his mother, my great-grandmother, took over the business in 1914. A difficult start because who would let a boy of 14 cut and shave? Sjouke had no affinity with shoemaking, so they started a cigar shop next to the barbershop, where my great-grandmother also sold liquorice and sweets."

My customers are my friends "Actually, I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher because I liked small children. But they turned that into primary education, which I didn't like much. Of course, I always saw my father nattering away while he was cutting. The atmosphere was cosy and convivial with all those men, and then it occurred to me that I actually liked that a lot more. From the age of 14, I had been cutting my brother's, my mother's and even my own hair, and I still do by the way. So I decided to take hairdressing training. My internships were always with men's hairdressers. I didn't like women's work, especially colouring and perming. When I was 20, I finished the three-year hairdressing training and went to work for my father. I haven't regretted that for a moment! It feels like all my clients are my friends, and I couldn't do without them! If someone doesn't suit me, they won't come back. There is, after all, a special, nostalgic atmosphere here that may or may not appeal to you."

Stuff from days gone by

The barbershop still has some attributes from its early days. Durkje says enthusiastically: "I still use the shaving table with marble top that has been here for 130 years. I also still have my great-grandfather Ynze's cash books and the escritoire on which he did the bookkeeping. I also still have a mourning veil from him. In those days, women had to wear it

at funerals, and they could rent it from my great-grandfather for 10 cents. Besides his hairdressing work, he was also a shoemaker and made break straps, which I still own. These were a kind of straps with a ball that exerted pressure on the fracture site to prevent the abdominal contents from bulging. I also have an old-fashioned children's barber chair, a sink in which hair was washed and hand clippers. My great-grandfather's father, Jacob Abraham Hoeksema, was a carpenter and he used to call time and light the lanterns. I still have his carpenter's box and the rattle he used to tell the time. Very unusually, I also recently got a lath with his handwriting! A customer was renovating and discovered the slat with Jacob Abraham Hoeksema's name on it. When we celebrated our 130th anniversary, that customer gave me that slat."

On 24 May 1893, Ynze Hoeksema opened his barbershop at Kerkstraat 25 in beautiful Makkum (NL). His son, Sjouke Hoeksema, took over the business in 1914, after which Jentje Hoeksema took over as the third generation in 1952. 100 years after its establishment, the fourth generation marks another milestone in this family story. Durkje Hoeksema still cuts in the same small space where her great-grandfather once started. As icing on the cake, Hoeksema Kapper received the certificate 'By Royal Order Court Supplier' in 2018, on the occasion of their 125th anniversary. Durkje is proud of her barbershop and this year, especially the month of May, has a special meaning for her. She celebrated not only her 50th birthday, but also her 30th anniversary as a barber, and on the day of the interview, 24 May exactly, the business celebrates its 130th anniversary. With enthusiasm, Durkje shares her family story, in which a beautiful piece of history is interwoven.

Deserter

Looking for stories from the past, Durkje shares a remarkable story: "When my grandfather Sjouke was 18 years old, he had to enlist. He decided to join the Navy. Since he sometimes had to clean wounds in the barbershop, he was assigned as a nurse. At one point, the Navy ship was in Rotterdam harbour. The senior officers would disembark to enjoy themselves ashore with the ladies of pleasure. Unfortunately, they often contracted venereal diseases, which my grandfather and his buddy then had to treat. They got tired of it. Next to their ship was a Chinese ship and they got the idea of hiding there to sail with it to China, where they could start a new life. And so they did. They hid in the hold where the supplies for food and drink were. So on the Navy ship, two crew members went missing. They were searched with all hands. The search included dredging and searching the entire quay, but in vain. They spent two days on that Chinese ship before they were discovered. Normally, desertion is punishable immediately, but the crew was so relieved to have been found again that they were allowed to return to the ship. Just as well, otherwise I wouldn't have been there!"

Wartime

Durkje continues the story: "After serving in the navy, my grandfather returned to the barbershop and married Marie Andela, my grandmother. They had four children, of whom my father was the youngest. My grandfather lived through the war, which was a very exciting time. One of his sons, my father's brother, had to work for the Germans. He had him go into hiding in the bedroom above the barbershop, where I was later born. There was a secret hiding place there. They also had a Jewish boy from Hilversum in the house, called Eddy Karelsen, who ended up with them during the Hunger Winter. No one knew he was Jewish. They always pretended he was a hunger evacuee.

It was all very exciting, because my grandfather also had to cut German soldiers in the barbershop, while his customers included people from the Resistance.”

How did that Jewish boy end up with them? Durkje: "His father, Dolf Karelsen, was a conductor at a radio orchestra. During the war he was arrested and deported to Poland, unfortunately he never returned. Eddy's mother was left behind with her three young children. During the Hunger Winter, she heard about a transport of Catholic children to Makkum. She subsequently went there with her two sons aged 9 and 11 and managed to get them unseen onto the truck that contained 25 other children. After a tough journey, they arrived in Makkum and the truck stopped right in front of the barbershop.

My grandfather had just finished cutting hair and was standing in the doorway watching. There was a list of host families where the 25 children would be accommodated, but now of course, there were two children too many. My grandfather took one of them, Eddy, into his care, his little brother went with someone who lived across the street. They soon found out that Eddy was Jewish, but they pretended he was a 'hunger evacuee' and so he became part of the family. When I turned 50, that Jewish boy, Eddy Karelsen, visited me, a very special occasion!”

My father

"Because my grandfather fell ill and my father's brother and sisters had other interests, my father, Jentje, together with his mother, my grandmother, took over the

business in 1952. At that time, he was only 16 years old, so history repeated itself. At that time, barber schools sprang up, but not yet in a school building of their own. A room was rented in a hotel in the city of Leeuwarden, where mirrors were set up and they used models from the city. My father then had to go to Leeuwarden on his moped and that is how he learnt the trade. He already had some experience lathering up customers, as he had to help his father, my grandfather, with that in the business. I remember my father always had a cigarette in his hand. While cutting, he would take puffs of his cigarette. He was 12 when he started smoking because my grandmother asked him to! That way he could advertise their tobacco business. He still lived to be 70!

Like me, my father liked small children. When they came into the shop, he would always play magic tricks with them. He would balance a note of paper money on his nose, and with a stick he used to wipe hair, he could juggle. He was also a great storyteller."

Friction & attention

"For seven years, from 1993 to 2000, I worked with my father. I cut in the morning and he took care of the afternoon. We have a small business and it was more convenient to divide it that way. Besides, my clients had different needs from his. I did everything by appointment and my father by walk-in. I also took more time with my clients, with appointments every half-hour. I used to put a rug on the table and put flowers, but as soon as my father started at 1 pm, he removed them again.

Shaving is not my thing, I do beards, but complete wet shaving I don't do. My father did. So when he came to work, he would pull out the Vergulde Hand and Gillette products. Moreover, I pampered my customers a bit more, I did a friction shave, but also gave them a scalp massage. Attention and experience have become more and more important over the years. With me, they get a cup of coffee and on Friday evenings we even serve beer and wine. It's great fun here!"

Authentic

"I work five days a week, only on Thursday afternoons can I be found in my hat shop, because I have that too. I love creating something with my hands. The fact that I can make a living from these two crafts is very beautiful to me. My father and mother have always lived very frugally. The earnings from cigars and cigarettes are not very big either, it's more a matter of tax than profit. Later I realised how special that actually is and I have a lot of respect for them. My father rebuilt the business three times and each time he erected an extra wall. A year after my father passed away in 2007, I was curious about what was hidden behind all those walls. I removed them all and then the old materials from 130 years ago emerged. A tile wall made of Makkummer pottery, the original beams and the old wooden floor. We reused the original colours and the barbershop was restored to its former glory. It is now an authentic shop again, exactly as it looked 130 years ago."

"I am proud that Hoeksema Kapper was awarded 'By Royal Order Court Supplier' five years ago when we celebrated our 125th anniversary.

To be awarded this, you really have to mean something to the community. I am in many associations and foundations, and the barbershop is actually an incubator for ideas. If there is a decent plan, I will implement it. For example, I'm in the Queen's Association, but I'm also active during war commemoration days. The war is pretty much the common thread in this house and in our family. My father even wrote a book about the war in Makkum and set up exhibitions about it. Those items are in my attic and I put them in the shop window on relevant days."

Dream of the future

“I would really like to write a book about adventures in the barbershop, about Makkum and my family. I have two children, but at the moment they have other interests. I did tell them never to sell the premises, if necessary they should rent it out. It has to stay in the family. And I hope I stay healthy for a long time, because I'll keep barbering until I die! I'm going to try to become the oldest barber in the Netherlands. But I'm going on a special trip now first! I have never been away from Makkum for more than a week and always have people around me. But now, at 50, for the first time I'm going to take a cruise on a mail boat along the Norwegian coast for a fortnight, all by myself. That cruise has been around since 1893, just as long as my barbershop. I am hugely looking forward to that!"

The kitchen is still her parents' original kitchen, complete with the crockery from over 60 years ago. And if that's not enough, Durkje might also take you on an 'alley stroll' through the picturesque alleys of Makkum.
