There are lots of questions about the lion and there are lots of answers! If you want to find out, you should look in this article. You will find all the answers and more! The Beauty King The lion’s looks are amazing the king of the jungle is here! Only the male lions have manes, which can be tawny, goldish and reddish. A male lion’s mane makes him look much bigger than it actually is! An adult boy lion can weigh from 385 to 420 pounds! Strong bodies and sharp teeth make the lion excellent fighters! Unlike any other big cats, lions do not have stripes. Lions are built for a short burst of speed and do not catch everything they attack.

Lions have nine deadly claws; five on each front foot and four on each back foot. Lions and other big cats can walk on their tiptoe- literally! Where the Lion Lives! ! The Jungle King’s habitat is outstanding! Almost all of the lions live in Africa! African lions would rather live in wide-open places! Lions are limited to parts of Africa such as the Gir forest. Lions live everywhere except forests and mountains. The savanna can be very hot during the day, so lions rather hunt at night. Lions had a much larger range. Less than 2,000 years ago there were lions in South Eastern Europe! The Asian lion is reduced to about 250 individuals in a small preserve in India! The Transvaal lion only lives in Kruger National Park in South Africa The Senegal lion from West Africa is endangered! The cape lion is extinct from South Africa! Going To The Super Market Here come the vicious male lions! Lions are carnivores. Usually they prefer bigger animals! Males are the first to eat at every meal. The dominant males eat first taking as much as their stomachs can hold. In one day, a lioness can eat up to 55 pounds of meat! Once the cubs are a year old the cubs start learning to hunt by themselves! Wonderful senses help the lion to track down prey! A single lion hunt is only successful 17 percent of the time! Cubs will protect their meat from the adult lions! Lion’s teeth are built for eating meat! The favorite prey of the lions is zebras, buffaloes, and wildebeest. Lions show themselves to the prey and then the hiding lions attack! As humans destroy more and more lion habitats, there is less space for them to eat and catch their meat. Lots of people hunt/ illegally kill the lion to sell their mane and claws. Beginning to end.! ! The lion is mammal. There can be up to 35 lions in a pride! Lionesses only reduce when she is in estrus. When a girl lion is ready to mate she gives off a scent to attract a mate. If a lion does not want to mate she hits him with her paw and growls at him. The male lions biggest job is to protect the female lions and there cubs. Cubs need to learn to “ communicate in order to cooperate with the other members in the pride. The lioness can give birth to three or four cubs at one time! To make sure that the cubs are looked after lioness live together a lot. Each cub weighs more than three of four pounds. A lion will often eat the prey that the lioness has caught and killed and the male will eat it all by itself. In spaces with good hunting and plenty of water pride can grow to a very large size! Most prey animals can run very quickly so lions have to get very close before attacking. Lions can live from ten to fifteen years in the wild but in captivity they can live longer than twenty Fun Facts ! The lion was one of the most favorite animals of the ancient Assyricans!
