Welcome to W

hether this is your first time in the Catalan capital or whether you consider Barcelona to be your sunnier home from home, there is always plenty to see and do here. Last year 7.5 million visitors enjoyed their own unique Barcelona experience. These include business trips, family holidays, friends taking a break together, romantic weekends, and countless more good reasons for listening to the enticing call of destination Barcelona. The way you travel says a lot about you, and if you’re reading this magazine, chances are that you’re an independent traveller who has chosen to stay in a holiday apartment. Congratulations! Only 1,7% of Barcelona’s apartments are used for tourist apartment rentals, so you are one of the privileged few who have chosen to experience the city just like a local. Barcelona is a truly unique city, with spectacular architecture, Mediterranean beaches, worldclass sightseeing attractions and a strong cultural identity. We would like to accompany your Barcelona experience with a guide that

includes and also goes beyond the regular information offered to tourists. After all, you’re not just visiting Barcelona, you’re also living with us, in the apartment next door. You’ll find some useful insights into the structures that make the city tick, from local regulations to the colour of the recycling bins and the characteristics of different beaches. Holiday apartment rentals represent the most sustainable travel option for many visitors, and as a conscious traveller we want to help you feel as integrated as possible during your stay in Barcelona. Wishing you a comfortable stay,

Enrique Alcántara-García Chairman Apartur: Barcelona Tourist Apartments Association

CYCLING IN the city

· · ·

Live

Protective helments are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 16. Cyclists must use the cycle lanes; if there isn’t one, stay in the lane closest to the pavement. Using the bus lane is not permitted. Bikes can only ride on pavements that are wider than 5 metres.

in the street

· · · 8

Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ - 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.

INFO

in your apartment

· · ·

Please keep quiet between 10pm and 8am. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday! Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sounds carry up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Be aware that heels on tiles or parquet floor make a loud click which can usually be heard in the apartment below.

ON THE BEACH

· ·

Don’t use any soap or shampoo at the showers by the beach. It pollutes the water, and you can be fined. Respect the coloured flags. Green means the sea is calm, yellow indicates medium hazard such as slight currents or jellyfish, and a red flag warns you not to enter the water.

RECYCLING Barcelona is an eco-friendly city. Keep an eye out for the coloured recycling bins nearest to your apartment:

·· ·· ·

Yellow: plastic and tetra pack Green: glass Blue: paper Brown: organic Grey: non-recyclable items

The age of the Smartphone has revolutionised our access to any information we may need. When visiting Barcelona for the first time (or even if the city is familiar to you) the endless grids of streets, maps and possibilities for exploring can be overwhelming. Public WiFi is easily accessible in open hot-spots and bars, and the following apps will help even the most lost of travellers find their way like a local:

6 Essential Barcelona Apps 1. Barcelona Metro Map This app gives step-by-step directions on how to get from place to place using the quickest and easiest routes. Since it is a little tricky to figure out where to connect to which station when you first arrive in Barcelona, this app will be your saving grace. 2. City Maps 2Go City Maps 2Go is a must for the directionally challenged! City Maps 2 Go does not need wifi once the map of Barcelona is downloaded. You can save locations that you want to visit or have visited and the compass always tells you in which direction to go. 3. Spotted by Locals Looking for a place to go that isn’t flooded with tourists? This app boasts plenty of insider tips and photos posted by Barcelona locals themselves. Sections include bars, art and culture, shopping and many more to satisfy your craving for something off the beaten path. 4. Spanish Dict Wifi isn't necessary when you need to communicate in a flash! Spanish Dict is perfect for deciphering a menu, brushing up on vocabulary, or simply getting your point across. Instead of carrying around a bulky dictionary, this app does the trick. 5. Yelp If you’re looking for a specific place to eat or just want to explore your options, this app is a must. Reviews and photos posted by users prove very helpful when deciding where to try churros and chocolate or which bar has the best mojito in town. 6. iBeach Worried about the weather conditions before heading to the beach? Have no fear, iBeach provides you with all of the information you could possibly need about the beaches of Barcelona, including how windy it is, how strong the waves are, where the nearest public restroom and grocery store are, and even how many jellyfish are in the water!

As a holiday destination, Barcelona has it all. This forward-thinking Mediterranean city is an oasis of culture and tradition. Internationally renowned for its Modernist architecture, which is crowned by Gaudí’s masterpieces such as the Sagrada Família - the world’s only Modernist Basilica, Park Güell – a contemporary Eden of landscaped gardening, quirky features and incomparable views, and the fairytale Casa Batlló on Passieg de Gràcia. Barcelona's city centre dates back to Roman times and beyond, with fragments of the thick wall that provided its defensive fortress still visible next to the Cathedral, along the back streets of Correu Vell, and even as the basement walls of a few bars in Carrer Ample. Barcelona’s gastronomy is also worth mentioning, as this brings together a delicious variety of typical Catalan flavours sourced from the nearby countryside, mountains and sea. As the most international city in Spain, fusion cuisine abounds, with Middle Eastern eateries, oriental, Latin American and European chefs interpreting their own traditional dishes within the context of 21st century Catalonia.

18

And of course, there’s the sea. From beaches to boat trips, and dreamy sunset cocktails to the sparkle of moonlight on the distant waves. What was intended to be a short introduction has already gathered a momentum of its own. Yes, Barcelona has it all. When we caught up with Vittorio Cicero, founder of Vesping scooter hire and tours, his deep passion for Barcelona is clearly matched by a passion for showing visitors the very best of the city. There are many ways to discover a city, and Vesping offer options to suit all tastes and personalities. The only requirement is that you have previous experience riding a scooter and a valid driving license. An obvious advantage facilitated by this mode of transport is the ease with which you can move around the city, nipping from one attraction and district to the next. You and GPS If you’re the easy rider type who prefers to discover Barcelona on your own, you’ll love the Vesping GPS option. Top sights and essential hotspots are all clearly marked, and you can

with Vesping

create your own route from one place to the next. And of course, when it’s time to return to base camp, hit “home”, and you’ll be guided back. Vittorio showed us the GPS, and what really stood out is that it’s loaded with exquisite insider tips. You’ll find restaurants and bars favoured by locals, where a quality meal in a friendly ambience will be as generously priced as it is enjoyable. Daily Guided Tours Share your Barcelona experience with other visitors and let the experienced Vesping crew take you on a route that will exceed your expectations. Yes, you will visit La Rambla, Camp Nou, Tibidabo… but you’ll also connect with the hidden Barcelona, the living, breathing soul of the city. The Vesping team want to know what your interests are – street art? Architecture? Literary haunts? And they’ll weave these details into the tour like the icing on an already exquisite cupcake. Exclusive Tours Treat yourself and your group to a private tour,

with the flexibility of following your whims and interests around the Catalan capital. Fancy an ice-cream? The Vesping team can take you to the only Italian ice-cream parlour in town where they make their own. Or perhaps you’re in the mood for some tapas? You can be sure that only the freshest and most authentic dishes will be served at the table they bring you to. Whilst it’s certainly true that Vesping rent scooters and organise tours, the essence of this company that has made it soar as a success in the last five years is the personalized attention given to each client – or should we say friend? If you’d like an open and welcoming “base camp” contact in Barcelona, which goes beyond a tour or rental, then get in touch with Vesping and live this different kind of Barcelona experience for yourself.

Barcelona Liceu Opera

Experience the largest opera house in Europe

O

pera houses are becoming increasingly popular tourist attractions in city destinations. Their artistic performances with the best contemporary singers are themselves sufficient reason to travel, and guided tours also offer an exclusive alternative for tourists which even rival the city’s main attractions. Most of the opera houses we are familiar with were founded during the mid nineteenth century. Their role has always reached beyond the purely artistic, as these are venues where the wealthier classes could socialise and be seen. However, it would be a mistake to think that opera was only reserved for the upper echelons of society. On the contrary, since its birth in early sixteenth century Florence, entrepreneurs have caught onto the business opportunities in making opera accessible to the popular classes. The opera attracts a wide range of fans, and their passion is one of the factors that make an artist triumph and create an unforgettable night. During the nineteenth century, Catalonia in general and Barcelona in particular experienced an economic boost that consolidated the industrial bourgeoisie whilst displacing the aristocracy. This bourgeoisie quickly understood that they required a venue where they could gather and socialise amongst themselves. Aside from being an important artistic project, Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu was also

20

conceived with this secondary intention. Founded in 1847 on La Rambla, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, or simply 'Liceu', quickly became the artistic and social reference for Barcelona and Spain. Its capacity makes it the largest Italian style theatre in Europe and the world's second largest. Its walls are mute testimonies to the artistic, social and political developments that have come to define the identity of Barcelona: from passion for the works of Wagner, to the 1893 anarchist bombing and the fire of 1994 that mobilized the whole society and the political class. Taking a guided tour or attending a performance are the best ways to experience the opera, and also to see first hand one of Barcelona’s main venues that has managed to maintain its artistic activity continuously for more than 160 years.

THE BEST BEACHES IN & AROUND BARCELONA As the temperatures start to soar the nearby Mediterranean Sea becomes even more appealing. The question isn't whether to go to the beach but rather which one? Choose from these top locations! In Barcelona

Near Barcelona

Barceloneta “Meet you by the cubes!” Yes, Barceloneta’s unusual beach sculpture is a reference point for thousands of sun-worshippers every summer. It’s usually the busiest stretch of beach so arrive early to pick the best spot. Chiringuitos, or beach bars, provide everything from refreshments to gourmet meals. M Barceloneta

Castelldefels The wide open beaches of Castelldefels with their soft sand and convenient watersports facilities are popular with Barcelona's local residents who want to get away (but not too far away!) from the city. Cultural activities such as concerts and performances are regularly organised along the seafront promenade. Cercanias train. 20 minutes from Sants

Nova Icària Kids will love any stretch of the giant sandpit that extends from the W Hotel to behind the angular Fòrum building, but this beach is particularly ideal for a day out with the little ones. Bring bats and a ball for the ping-pong table, or join a volleyball game. Deckchairs, ice-cream kiosks and showers are conveniently located. M Ciutadella Vila Olímpica

Sitges The once fishing village of Sitges is just 30 minutes south of Barcelona. This fun-loving town has a vivacious summer ambience and 17 golden beaches, which, along with its charming whitewashed buildings, make for an ideal day trip. It's worth walking those extra few minutes away from the town to reach the quieter beaches. Cercanias train. 35 minutes from Sants.

Platja Sant Adrià de Besòs You could be forgiven for thinking you're no longer in Barcelona when you reach the beach behind the Fòrum. The chiringuitos are actually allowed to have live DJs and music here because yes, this is just outside the official city limits. Party on! M El Maresme Fòrum

Garraf Picturesque and quaint, this area is located between Castelldefels and Sitges and is surrounded by the Garraf Natural Park. Its cute beach huts and rocky surroundings create a special atmosphere. It is especially popular with local families, and there aren't any bars on the beach so remember to bring your own supplies. Cercanias train. 29 minutes from Sants

Day Trip

ROSES Jewel of the Costa Brava

In Barcelona, we are fortunate enough to have the sun, city, mountains and the sea. However, if you prefer somewhere quieter and cleaner, then we suggest you check out the picturesque town of Roses on the Costa Brava.

DISCOVER ROSES

A MAGICAL COASTLINE

Situated next to the Cap de Creus natural park, Roses is located in the area of Alt Empordรก, the northernmost tip before Catalonia touches France. As with much of this region, its history can be traced back to the 5th century BC, when it was founded by the Greeks. Although these remains are less visible than in the nearby settlement of Empuries, whose ruins of the Greek and Roman towns can be visited, its infrastructure dates back to the same era. The Romans also left their mark on Roses, in the 2nd century BC, and later the Visigoths established a stronghold here.

While the town is delightful enough, it is the coastline that really evokes gasps of awe. Long, winding cliff roads lead you above the town with breathtaking views of the sparkling, pictureperfect blue Mediterranean sea that stretches beyond the horizon. Through the leafy green canopies, you can see stolen snatches of coastline and twinkling water. Secluded little bays dazzle with their foamy waves, glinting with a cooling promise.

Today, the town is welcoming and more than equipped to provide for its visitors, with plenty of cosy cafes serving piping hot treats from the sea, or bars that face onto the beach with freshly mixed sangria, sweet cocktails and funky beats.

28

These are perfect secret spots to spend the morning relaxing in your own company. Choose your place from afar and trot carefully down the rocky terrain until you reach your piece of paradise where, if you feel like it, you can happily whip off your clothes and plunge directly into the inviting water.

FEATURES

ACTIVITIES IN ROSES Roses is famous for its semi-wild coastal areas that boast a wealth of underwater action. Try your hand at diving or snorkelling, or take a trip on a boat with undersea views. You could also try water-skiing, windsurfing, or sailing... or just hire a pedalo for an hour to explore the coastline. There are also plenty of historical monuments and buildings that provide serene shade and interesting tales such as the Casa Mallol, which features beautiful craftsmanship from local artisans.

articket: 6 museums ONLINE TRAIN TICKETS THEATRE TICKETS

Discounted tickets for the thatre and musicals are sold on the afternoon of the show at the tourist office below Plaça Catalunya.

If you're travelling around Spain or taking an international train, avoid the often epic queues at Sants by booking your tickets online from www.renfe.es, or buy them from a less busy station such as Arc de Triomf, Clot or Passeig de Gràcia.

Gain complete access to the permanent and temporary collections of the CCCB, Museu Picasso, Fundació Miró, Fundació Tàpies, MACBA and MNAC for just 30€, valid during 3 months. These discount cards are available directly from the museums or tourist offices around Barcelona.

JOT DOWN your PHONE'S serial number As we all know, pickpockets are everywhere in Barcelona, especially in the crowded area of La Rambla or on the metro, and they are good. In the event that you do lose your phone, it is crucial to have the serial number available in order to have a chance of finding it. You can locate the serial number on your device, on the device’s packaging, or through iTunes (for iPhones).

PAY ATTENTION TO STREET FLYERS! Aside from the Barcelona Connect events section, this is a great way to find the coolest things to do around town. From jazz festivals to organic food markets and free dance lessons, the flyers that seem to saturate the city are actually your key to having an authentic experience in Barcelona.

SAVE CASH WITH THE RIGHT METRO PASS Whether you are just visiting Barcelona for a few days or spending an extended period of time here, a metro pass will definitely come in handy for getting around. While an individual ticket costs 2,15€, the ten-trip T10 is just under 10€, cutting the cost per trip in half. Another option is to purchase a monthly pass for 52,75€, which is definitely the best option if you take at least two trips per day.

Second World War Remembered at the Catalan History Museum

T

The seventieth Anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps is commemorated by the Catalan History Museum with two exhibitions. Seventy years after the end of the Second World War and the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, it’s a necessity and a moral obligation to remember these tragic hours of European and world history. For this reason, the Catalan History Museum, as a museum that’s open to the world, decided to participate in this international commemoration and to make this the central theme of their exhibitions for 2015. Beyond Mauthausen. Francesc Boix, photographer The Catalan photographer Francesc Boix was held at the Mauthausen camp. His photographs of the Nazi deportations stand as witnesses to these crimes, and some of his images were used as evidence at the Nuremberg and Dachau trials. This exhibition is the first restrospective of the author, and it presents unedited images from his youth. These images come from the Commission for Dignity and from the period after the liberation from the archives of the Associació Amical of Mauthausen. This exhibition can be visited from the 18th June – 18th October. By evoking these deplorable and painful events the exhibition also invites us to reflect on the level of cruelty that human beings are capable of, and is a reminder of the tragic aspects of war conflicts. Unfortunately, genocides still continue to be part of our contemporary world.

FEATURES

EXHIBITIONS: ·BEYOND MAUTHAUSEN ·FLEEING THE HOLOCAUST

Fleeing the Holocaust. Catalonia and the Jewish refugees of the Second World War The exhibition recovers the unknown history of thousands of Jewish people who escaped the Nazi atrocities by crossing the Pyrenees. Some managed to get away, whilst others lost their lives. Six of the nine million Jews who lived in Europe died as a consequence of the Nazi persecution, which was the largest genocide in human history. The exhibition remembers this recent past through the stories of a dozen Jewish families. Thousands of families managed to escape, such as the families of Paquita Sitzer and Víctor Papa, whilst others, like the Heilbruner-Lavi couple died at Auschwitz. All of these situations were full of fear and angst, as fleeing from persecution brought them towards an unknown future with often deplorable conditions. Their testimonials allow us to retrace some of the defining stages of persecution and flight, such as customs, escape routes, expulsions, prisons and concentration camps. Visitors can get closer to the history and testimonial records of the time with projections of a selection of personal interviews with refugees, which were recorded between 2005 and 2014 by Mireia Boya and Josep Calvet, curators of the exhibition, and also experts on the escape routes used by the Jews in Spain during the Second World War. This exhibition runs from 2nd July – 18th October at the Catalan History Museum, and then from the 29th October until 15th January 2016 at the Jewish History Museum in Girona. Catalan History Museum Pl. de Pau Vila, 3 (Palau de Mar) Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00-19:00. Wednesdays from 10:00-22:00. Sundays and public holidays from 10:00-14:30. Mondays closed (except public holidays).

NIGHTLIFE

The Sun has got his hat on, so even the night owls hit the beach. This is the great thing about Barcelona. Weather permitting – and we’ll wager 90% of the summer is good for the sun - you can go to the beach every day for a few hours, to soak up the sun, then eat and carry on sightseeing. Maybe eat again or go for cocktails in the lounge or chiringuito. Then out to a party or a gig. Maybe some sleep? Reverse, repeat. The choice is endless. The only problem is time, so here’s a guide to all the best events during your stay. Send your August info to night@barcelonaconnect.com

beach bars You made it to the beach. Where are the best joints to hang out? Well there are quite a few and this month we will focus on some of the finer establishments. The Chiringuito Group has 3 places on adjoining beaches and has an excellent reputation for providing a great service. So if it’s sea, hammocks, good music, cocktails, juices and general Mediterranean culture you’re looking for, then head to one of these locations and claim your little spot of paradise in Barcelona.
