In your apartment

· · ·

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sound carries up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Make sure doors and windows are locked when you leave the apartment to prevent theft. Don't leave money or valuables in your room. Use a safe deposit box.

Protect your property

· · ·

Keep your luggage in sight, or use a left luggage service. Make sure bags are always closed. Protect your personal belongings, especially in crowded areas such as the city centre, La Rambla, public transport and the beach. You may wish to leave your passport or identity card in your hotel or apartment's safe, and carry a certified photocopy instead.

2. BORN This trendy cultural hub is an up-andcoming fashion district with plenty of independent boutiques that specialise in one-off items and contemporary fashion. Many of the best shops are in Carrer Rec, Carrer dels Flassaders, and in the small streets off Rambla del Born.

3. RAVAL If you are bringing goods out of the EU, ask for a Tax Free Cheque in the shop.

ROMAN WALLS

POBLENOU CEMETERY TOURS

A high stone fortress marked the boundaries of the Roman city of Barcino and fragments of these mighty structures can still be seen around the Cathedral and Gothic district, such as this intriguing corner of Plaça Traginers. Larger sections of the Roman walls can also be found along the nearby Baixada de Viladecols. If you look carefully to the right of the Cathedral you will see fragments along the side of Carrer dels Comtes which leads towards Plaça Sant Jaume.

The monumental Cemetery of Poblenou is a fascinating tribute to Catalan history and is recognised for its outstanding funerary architecture which includes neoclassical art and Egyptian elements from the beginning of the 19th century. It was rebuilt in 1819. One of its most notable elements is the grave of Joseph Llaudet, with the famous “Kiss of Death” sculpture by Jaume Barba. Free guided tours are offered on the first Sunday of each month. www.cbsa.cat

PLACES TO DISCOVER ROMAN BARCELONA Barcelona is a very culturally rich city, where you can find remains of all historical eras: prehistory, ancient history, medieval... And although all historical periods have very interesting and precious remains, without a doubt Roman Barcelona is and will be one of the most important historical phases of all time. The city of Barcelona was founded more than 2000 years ago by Emperor Augustus around 10 BC.C as Colonia "Iulia Augusta Faventia Paterna Barcino", although it is commonly known as Barcino. Its location was chosen because it was a key point of the Catalan geography, since the plan of Barcelona has a natural protection against land attacks as it is surrounded by the Litoral mountain range. Within the plan of Barcelona Barcino was founded in the Mons Taber, a small hill located in front of the sea where the Roman Forum was located. Although today there are not many visible remains of Roman Barcelona due to all the constructions and historical periods that have preceded them, today you can visit and observe many key points of the Roman city. Do you want to know where to find them? Below we provide a tour with the most 18

emblematic points.

1. VÍA SEPULCRAL DE LA PLAZA DE LA VILA DE MADRID In this square you can see an old Roman street located on the outskirts of Barcino, where on each side of the road there are located Roman tombs between the first and third centuries AD.C. The Romans were forbidden to bury their dead inside the cities for hygienic and health reasons, so the graves were placed in the entrance roads to the cities. Plaça de la Vila de Madrid

2. ARCADES OF THE ROMAN AQUEDUCT In this square you can see, attached to a building, two floors of Roman arcades corresponding to the original aqueduct that carried water to Barcino. Plaça Vuit de Març

3. GATEWAY TO THE CITY AND AQUEDUCT These remains are located in Plaza Nova, right at the beginning of Calle del Obispo. The gateway to the city can be distinguished because the round tors that flanked it are still

preserved. On the left side of the left tower is a reconstruction made in 1958 that was made of the Roman aqueduct that in its time brought water to the city. Plaza Nova

8. CARDO MAXIMUS The other main avenue of Barcino is currently located the street “Baixada de la llibreteria”, which crossed the city from north to south. Carrer del Bisbe & Carrer de la ciutat

4. CASA DEL ARCEDIANO On the ground floor of this building, you can see a part of the wall of Roman Barcelona and the arrival point of the Roman aqueduct. Carrer de Santa Llúcia, 1

9. WALL AND DEFENSE TOWERS Located in the Ramón Berenguer square is part of the second wall of the city. This wall was 16 meters high and had a total of 74 towers. Plaça Ramón Berenguer

5. DECUMANUS MAXIMUS The original route passes through the current Calle del Obispo. It was the main avenue that divided Roman Barcelona from east to west. Carrer del Bisbe

6. TEMPLE OF AUGUSTUS This is the oldest preserved building of Barcino, the temple dedicated to Augustus. Only 4 columns are preserved. Carrer del Paradís, 10

7. ROMAN FORUM This was the economic and political centre of Roman Barcelona. Here were located the most important temples of the city. Plaça Sant Jaume

10. DOMUS DE AVINYÓ This domus roman dating from the first century AD.C, belonged to a very important member of Roman Barcelona and today you can visit and observe its rich set of frescoes and paintings located on the ceiling and walls. Carrer Avinyó

MONTSERRAT Attracted by the idea of a fun and adventurous day out? Then why not head to Montserrat mountain, located just 50km from Barcelona, and famous for its Benedictine monastery, breathtaking views and excellent hiking trails. DISCOVER MONTSERRAT The first thing you'll notice on arrival at the foot of Montserrat mountain is its unusual rounded rock formations. If you look closely, its shapes appear to resemble faces, mushrooms and other distinctive forms that have earned different parts of the mountain its various nicknames. MONTSERRAT MONASTERY One of the most influential places of worship in Catalonia, it remains an important centre that is currently home to eighty Benedictine monks. Its origins date back to 888 CE when it was the simple hermitage of Santa María. It became an independent abbey in 1409 and its wealthy benefactors allowed the development of magnificent interiors and religious art works. The famous "black Madonna" statue can be visited here. 24

MUSEUM & GALLERY As their private collection of art grew, it became evident that a larger space was needed to display it for the public. The museum building was constructed by the Modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1929. It now contains over 1,300 pieces ranging from Egyptian icons in the Archaeology of the Biblical East collection, to classical paintings by El Greco and Caravaggio, and modern masterpieces by Chagall, Miró, Dalí and Picasso.

GETTING TO MONTSERRAT FR A NC E

CATA LONIA

Montserrat Barcelona Train: Hourly departures from Plaça Espanya. Train takes 1 hour.

FUNICULAR & CABLE CAR The easiest way to reach Montserrat is by train from Plaça Espanya. Get off at Monistrol de Montserrat to take the funicular railway, or at Montserrat Aeri for the cable-car. Both arrive near the monastery. If you're feeling more energetic, there are several paths for walking up. The Sant Joan funicular departs from near the monastery and will take you even higher up, to 1000m above sea level, where you can enjoy some amazing views.

BARCELONETA & PORT OLÍMPIC Along the seafront This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, and there's a busy nightlife scene.
