SIGHTSEEING

In your apartment

· · ·

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sound carries up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Make sure doors and windows are locked when you leave the apartment to prevent theft. Don't leave money or valuables in your room. Use a safe deposit box.

Protect your property

· · ·

Keep your luggage in sight, or use a left luggage service. Make sure bags are always closed. Protect your personal belongings, especially in crowded areas such as the city centre, La Rambla, public transport and the beach. You may wish to leave your passport or identity card in your hotel or apartment's safe, and carry a certified photocopy instead.

1. PASSEIG DE GRÀCIA If you are drawn to classic and chic labels, then head straight to Passeig de Gràcia. This luxurious boulevard boasts beautiful buildings and décor, including the magnificent Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. Many of the most prestigious fashion shops and brands in Barcelona are located here, including Bulgari, Gucci, Hermès, Prada, Emporio Armani, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. If you are on a budget, or don’t want to splash out as far as a pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos, then check out the high-street stores such as Zara, Mango and H&M with their aspirational knock-offs.

2. BORN This trendy cultural hub is an up-andcoming fashion district with plenty of independent boutiques that specialise in one-off items and contemporary fashion. Many of the best shops are in Carrer Rec, Carrer dels Flassaders, and in the small streets off Rambla del Born.

3. RAVAL If you are bringing goods out of the EU, ask for a Tax Free Cheque in the shop.

CASA VICENS GAUDÍ Casa Vicens Gaudí is the first masterpiece by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926). The young and talented Gaudí constructed this house in the Gràcia neighbourhood between 1883 and 1885 for the Vicens family. It is recognised as a wonderful work of art combining diverse influences, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 2005.

his colleagues applied papier máché on the ceiling of the dining room and on the walls of the smoking room, the most famous room in Casa Vicens.

The tour of Casa Vicens begins in the cozy garden where you can taste the gastronomic delights of its cafeteria. It's from the patio that you'll discover the true facade of the house, facing towards the garden which originally had a large waterfall and a ARCHITECTURE chapel dedicated to Santa Rita. MADE BY Unfortunately these no longer NATURE exist as the land was claimed by urban development in the sought after Gràcia neighbourhood.

A great variety of artistic techniques are present in this building. There is an intensive use of ceramics, such as the exterior tiles with carnation prints, a flower that Gaudí found on the site and incorporated as a key decorative element of this building. You can also see magnificent wrought iron work and the intense use of the sgraffito pottery technique in all the rooms which have plant motifs. However, the greatest surprise is perhaps the use of paper. Gaudí and 22

CASA VICENS GAUDÍ OFFERS OPEN VISITS AND GUIDED TOURS EVERY DAY

The visit continues on the second floor where the bedrooms, bathroom and temporary exhibition hall are located. On the third floor, you can discover the history of the house through its permanent exhibition of models. A final staircase leads to the first transitable roof created by Gaudí, which preceded the majestic roofs of La Pedrera and Casa Batlló. The trip ends at the bottom floor of the building where there is a video that explains the process of restoration and rehabilitation of the house with the aim of returning to its origin: to the house which was completed by Gaudí in 1885. This unique architectural jewel can be best summed up with the observation that it is truly "architecture made by nature", since wherever

you look inside this house, you will find plant motifs. Casa Vicens Gaudí offers open visits, guided tours in English, Spanish and Catalan, the “Smile Gaudí” tour -open visit plus professional photo session and the “Tardor y Vicens” tour, which includes an open visit to the house and sweet or savoury appetizer in its cafeteria. In addition, the ticket includes access to the audio guide available in 15 languages.

Carrer de les Carolines, 20 Open: Daily from 10:00-20:00. Fully accessible for people with reduced mobility. www.casavicens.org 23

CHOCOLATE & CHURROS This traditional treat is definitely recommended for satisfying any sweet tooth. Thick hot chocolate is served with long donut-like churros, which are dunked and devoured. Churros are normally covered with sugar, but sometimes also with cinnamon or (more!) chocolate.

ESCALIVADA

CALÇOTS

Freshly made escalivada is a local specialty which melts in the mouth. It is usually served as a tapa, or to accompany grilled meat dishes. It is made from smoke-grilled peppers, eggplant and onions which are mixed with olive oil and garlic and left to marinate and soak up the flavours. It is sometimes topped with anchovies and accompanied by crispy pa amb tomàquet, bread rubbed with fresh tomato and a drizzle of good quality olive oil. Delicious!

If you’re visiting Barcelona this spring we recommend you try a unique and popular seasonal specialty: calçots. These long spring onions have a mild leek-like flavour, and are served with a delicious romesco sauce, packed with the fresh flavours of tomatoes, peppers, garlic, almonds, bread, and extra virgin olive oil. The pile of steaming, chargrilled calçots is usually brought to the table wrapped in newspaper to keep them warm.

DAY TRIP

VALL DE NÚRIA PYRENEES

Vall de Núria is a high mountain valley located at 2000m, in the eastern area of the Pyrenees. Crowned by majestic mountain peaks that reach over 3000m, it is an idyllic location for outdoor activities and an ideal starting point for longer hikes into the mountains. ACTIVITIES FOR ALL THE FAMILY As the summer sunshine climbs in the sky, the resort area of Vall de Núria transforms from a ski haven to a hub of summer activities. It’s an ideal place to come with kids, as there is a huge variety of outdoor fun on offer. A play-park entertains the younger ones, and there is also a mini-golf area, and boating and canoes on the lake. There is a pony ride route especially designed for 2-8 year olds, which goes around the Sanctuary buildings. The farm area invites kids to encounter animals such as chickens, ducks, rabbits and Catalan donkeys. Horse riding is a good way to discover the landscapes of the valley, and routes are available for all levels. There is also an archery range inside the woods where you can test your focus and aim against silhouettes concealed among the trees. 26

BARCELONA CONNECT

A HISTORIC SANCTUARY The earliest records of Vall de Núria Sanctuary date back to Saint Giles in 700AD. Giles was a pilgrim who carved an icon of the Virgin Mary, which he hid when he fled Roman persecution. The first chapel was built here in 1072, and a shelter for shepherds was added in 1162. It has been rebuilt and enlarged many times, most recently in 1911. HIKING ROUTES There are some spectacular trails to be enjoyed here. Mountain paths wind through the woods and beyond the treeline towards the high and rocky mountain peaks. Popular routes include Pic de l’Àliga (2476m, 1hr15), Pic de la Fossa del Gegant (2801m, 3hrs) and Coma de Vaca (2.020m, 1hr15). Download a map from valldenuria.cat.

HALLOWEEN & LA CASTANYADA Traditional & Entertainment

Though not a local tradition, Halloween is gradually being adopted in the city especially by bakeries selling spooky donuts and bars and pubs embracing the excuse for a themed party. During La Castanyada, on the 1st of November, families gather together on the eve of All Saints to share the warmth of each other's company and remember loved ones. Roast chestnuts and sweet potatoes are the traditional fare, as well as panellets (sweets made with pine nuts and honey). Enjoy the autumn treats sold on street corners around Barcelona! SEMANA SANTA (EASTER WEEK) Traditional

Spain's religious history comes alive during Easter. Barcelona's festivities aren't nearly as dramatic as those of Seville and other cities, but a couple of local churches and religious brotherhoods hold possessions, such as “Nuestra Señora de las Angustias”, organised by the church of Sant Jaume in Carrer Ferran. You can also taste some typical desserts, such as "La Mona de Pascua" (Easter cake). All over Barcelona

Traditions C AG A T I Ó

This Christmas log is a smiling hollowed out piece of wood with a red barretina hat. Children "feed" him every day from the 8th December and keep him warm with a blanket. On Christmas Eve the children beat him with a stick, singing songs that demand he poops presents...and candy, nuts and figs come pouring out!

C H R I ST M A S M A R K E T S The most important Christmas market is the Fira de Santa Llúcia, opposite Barcelona Catherdral (30th Nov-23rd Dec). The square in front of La Sagrada Família also fills with festive stalls offering traditional Christmas figurines, nativity scenes and artisan gifts.

C AG A N E R A key character in the Catalan nativity scene is the caganer, a small figure defecating discretely behind the crib of baby Jesus. These statues symbolise fertilisation and renewal. In recent years they have been satirically represented by everyone from footballers and pop stars to royalty and politicians. Children love finding the caganer in the larger nativity scenes that have dozens of characters, including shepherds, kings, villagers and angels. 34

WHAT'S ON

C H R I ST M A S L I G H T S Once Barcelona's street decorations are switched on at the end of November there's no denying that Christmas is just around the corner. Look out for the pretty lights in small streets of the Gothic and Born districts, and the large wall of electrified colour along Gran Via.

NEULES These thinly rolled wafers are often covered in chocolate or packed with a creamy filling, and traditionally served alongside a selection of turrón at the end of a Christmas meal. They are light and easy to eat, and the perfect accompaniment to a glass of cava at any time during the holiday season.

TURRÓN This traditional Christmas sweet is made with honey, sugar, egg whites and almonds. Turrón de Jijona is a soft blend with ground almonds and oil, which makes it more sticky. Turrón de Alicante is a hard block made with whole almonds, and almost guaranteed to mess with any dental work. There are many other contemporary variations with additional ingredients such as chocolate, puffed rice and candied fruits.

EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

You may feel like you are getting lost, but rest assured you are guaranteed to find all the best little bars and restaurants favoured by locals.
