ROMAN WALLS

POBLENOU CEMETERY TOURS

A high stone fortress marked the boundaries of the Roman city of Barcino and fragments of these mighty structures can still be seen around the Cathedral and Gothic district, such as this intriguing corner of Plaça Traginers. Larger sections of the Roman walls can also be found along the nearby Baixada de Viladecols. If you look carefully to the right of the Cathedral you will see fragments along the side of Carrer dels Comtes which leads towards Plaça Sant Jaume.

The monumental Cemetery of Poblenou is a fascinating tribute to Catalan history and is recognised for its outstanding funerary architecture which includes neoclassical art and Egyptian elements from the beginning of the 19th century. It was rebuilt in 1819. One of its most notable elements is the grave of Joseph Llaudet, with the famous “Kiss of Death” sculpture by Jaume Barba. Free guided tours are offered on the first and third Sunday of each month. www.cbsa.cat

MEDIEVAL BARCELONA

The Medieval Period took place between the 5th and the 15th century, and was one of the most defining eras in Barcelona’s history. It was in this period that Barcelona found its new name as the Ciudad Condal, a nickname that has stuck ever since. The best way to immerse yourself in medieval Barcelona is by walking through the Gothic Quarter and admiring its beautiful architecture and hidden nooks and crannies. Barcelona Cathedral was built between the 13th and 15th century and is one of the city’s most significant medieval buildings. Its exterior was constructed in the 20th century in a neogothic style. It was precisely this remodelling that encouraged the city council to undertake a complete face-lift of the old town and revamp the Gothic Quarter in its signature gothic style. Plaça de la Seu

The old Hospital de la Santa Creu was was built at the start of the 15th century with the intention of merging six of the city’s smaller hospitals together, after plague and famine devastated the city. Today you can find the national Library of Catalonia on the top floor, and the building itself is considered one of the city’s best examples of Catalan gothic architecture. Carrer del’Hospital, 56

Santa Maria del Pi was constructed in gothic Catalan style in the 14th century. Several legends explain its name. One says that it comes from the image of a virgin that appeared on the trunk of a pine tree. A pine was thus planted outside the main door of the basilica, and remained there until the 19th century. Plaça del Pi, 7

Carrer Montcada was one of the most important streets for the medieval nobility of Barcelona who built their renaissance and baroque palaces nearby. Be sure to peep into any of the open courtyards. One of the most impressive medieval buildings that has been conserved to this day belonged to the Castellet family, and is now home to the Picasso Museum. 15

MONTSERRAT Attracted by the idea of a fun and adventurous day out? Then why not head to Montserrat mountain, located just 50km from Barcelona, and famous for its Benedictine monastery, breathtaking views and excellent hiking trails. DISCOVER MONTSERRAT The first thing you'll notice on arrival at the foot of Montserrat mountain is its unusual rounded rock formations. If you look closely, its shapes appear to resemble faces, mushrooms and other distinctive forms that have earned different parts of the mountain its various nicknames. MONTSERRAT MONASTERY One of the most influential places of worship in Catalonia, it remains an important centre that is currently home to eighty Benedictine monks. Its origins date back to 888 CE when it was the simple hermitage of Santa María. It became an independent abbey in 1409 and its wealthy benefactors allowed the development of magnificent interiors and religious art works. The famous "black Madonna" statue can be visited here. 24

WINE EXPERIENCES IN BARCELONA AT UNCORKED ACADEMY

In Barcelona, the last decade has seen the rise of “experiences” i.e. personalised activities that you can book by yourself or in a group, that are offered by locals. These experiences may be more off the beaten track and don’t necessarily involve trudging around in a tour group or queueing for the mainstream museums and sightseeing. Online portals such as Airbnb and Tripadvisor, to name a few, have made their mark in offering unique and bespoke events in Barcelona. Go on a grafitti walk, take a private cooking class, attend a full moon yoga session on a rooftop. The possibilities are endless and down to the imagination and knowledge of the host.

SABRE THE MOMENT

26

BARCELONA CONNECT

There is one particular experience fast becoming a bucket list essential in Barcelona, hosted by an Irish sommelier, near Plaça Espanya. You may have seen the art of champagne sabrage, lopping off the top of a bottle of champagne with a sword. This dates back to Napoleonic times, when soldiers celebrated victory atop their horses by opening bottles with one swish of a sabre. At

WHAT'S ON

Uncorked Academy, Zara the owner has given this a local twist, teaching participants the safest practice using a machete and a bottle of cava, the Catalan equivalent to French bubbly. Successful sabreurs receive a certificate and a keyring souvenir of their guillotined bottle top, with the cork still in place. The cava sabrage class, aptly titled “Sabre the Moment” guarantees to have a blast in Barcelona, but Uncorked Academy also hosts other events and workshops that are equally as fun.

On different nights every month you can find Food & Wine Pairing Dinners, Beer Tastings, Sangria & Tapas Workshop, Craft & Wine nights and more. Thanks to Barcelona’s gastronomical fame, the events always draw an international crowd who want to enjoy something a little different, in good company with good wines.

LOCAL INSIGHTS AND WINE FUN

A Class in a Glass is another wine offering where you can learn about Spanish and Catalan winemaking and wine pairing with a brief but in-depth look at the different wine growing regions in Catalunya, of which there are 12! This of course involves tasting five different wines, paired with snacks but the venue is open to bespoke and private group events too, where you can design your own event.

Uncorked Academy is a small Barcelona business with a focus on sustainable events, ecologically produced wines and seasonal, locally produced food. What’s more, the venue itself has been a labour of love for the owner, who has upcycled the décor over the last three years. Definitely one to check out in Barcelona! www.allzarasevents.com

Dating back to 1910, this bar was a favourite of Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí; its walls are sure to have heard a few interesting philosophical and political conversations in its day. It has managed to conserve its modernist décor but offers a different vibe, slightly further away from the tourist trail. Nou de la Rambla, 34

5. Casa Almirall Ordained with moon-shaped lamps, marble décor, and an amazing Gaudi-style wooden doorway, Casa Almirall is a living and breathing representation of Barcelona’s modernist movement. Despite its old roots from 1860, the bar has successfully managed to keep its drinkers hooked by adding a second large room at the back of the bar, and the reinstatement of an old-time tradition – serving vermouth with a skewered olive. EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

The atmosphere of El Born is both historical and trendy; be sure to explore all the way through to Cituadella Park which acts as its leafy green backdrop. You may feel like you are getting lost, but rest assured you are guaranteed to find all the best little bars and restaurants favoured by locals.
