Sagrada ia famíl

NG

There is something magical about catching a glimpse of the Sagrada Família´s suggestive spires reaching above the skyline. Its full title is the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia. It is the most important work by head architect Antonio Gaudí, and was consecrated as a Catholic Basilica (not a Cathedral, as many mistakenly believe), by Pope Benedict XVI in November 2010. Before his death in 1926, Gaudí is said to have remarked “my client is not in a hurry.” This remains the case, and its completion date is estimated between 2026-28, although the actual date is anyone´s guess. The Sagrada Família is heavily laden with symbolism. Its eighteen spires represent the Twelve Apostles, four Evangelists, Virgin Mary and, highest of all, Jesus Christ. Each side tells a story: the Nativity on the East, the Passion on the West, and the Glory on the South. The Nativity façade was completed in 1930. It represents the birth of Jesus and the Tree of Life. Its intricate stonework is packed with subtle allegorial details and geometrical symbolism that only reveals itself to the most knowledgeable eye. However, its impact is both powerful and immediate for any visitor. Plaça Sagrada Família

DAY TRIP figueras & Dalí Barcelona is a city brimming with art, and culture. However, it may be time to step off the beaten track and venture out of the city in search of something a little more surreal… The Teatro-Museo Dalí building is the world´s largest surrealist object. Once the town´s Municipal Theatre, it was destroyed at the end of the Spanish Civil War. Dalí occupied, renovated, and redesigned this now truly awe inspiring structure, turning it into a temple for all things surreal and sensational. The collection spans from Dalí´s early sketches and research to some of his most highly sought after pieces like "The Persistence of Memory" (more commonly known as "Melting Clocks"), "Galarina", one of the many portraits of his wife and muse Gala, or "Woman at the Window" which depicts Dalí’s sister looking out onto a surreal pool. As you arrive at the entrance of the museum you can expect to be greeted by golden alien-like statues that line the roof tops; as you continue through to the main entrance you will find yourself inside a circular walled garden, face to face with a 1941 Cadillac that just

16

so happens to have a giant boat dripping with a blue tear drops suspended above it. Pop a coin into the car, and lo and behold, it starts to rain inside the vehicle! The foyer of the building is topped by a gigantic glass dome made up of fragments of thick glass that illuminates the colossal canvas image of a torso with a cracked skull and a huge doorway passing through it. From here on in you must explore left to right, top to bottom and all the way around. That is the beauty of this exhibition, it is both interactive and unique in its layout and content. For example, the Mae West room. Dalí’s original installation is made up of five main features (the lips being the most famous and highly reproduced) that when looked upon from a certain angle display a giant surreal representation of the actress’s face. Guests form an orderly queue around the room and climb a step ladder to look through the magnifying eye of a needle that is guarded by a giant camel. From this angle, through this lens, the objects merge together to form the well known portrait. The remarkable "Palace of the Air" ceiling painting can also be found here. Tip your

Christmas shopping possibilities in Barcelona are limitless and the festive atmosphere of the city is sure to launch you into seasonal spirit. A logical place to start is at the top of Las Ramblas in Plaça Catalunya. You can see all the Christmas lights shining down to the port and off in every direction. WinTer Fun AT La Molina Not only is La Molina one of the oldest ski resorts in Spain, but it is also one of the closest to Barcelona. Its 53 slopes cover 61km of downhill runs, of all different levels. Beginners and children are in luck, there are 13 green and 16 blue slopes to enjoy. More advanced skiers will be challenged by 17 red slopes and 7 black ones which snake their way down the steeper sides of the mountains. Snowboarders are also very well looked after at La Molina, and any boarders who have mastered the “staying upright” technique can let rip with the tricks at the two snowparks. The Alabaus snowpark includes the only 170m long superpipe in the Pyrenees, and the Trampoline Snowpark has rails, jumps, and a spectacular wallride. Much entertainment is also guaranteed for the onlookers! Several ski and snowboard schools offer everything from one-off private classes to larger group classes spread over several days, so you can learn the basics, boost your confidence, or get the extra push you need to perfect those parallel turns.

24

If you´ve decided that neither skiing nor snowboarding are for you, or if you´d simply like to try something different, there is much more than an aprés-ski brulé to look forward to. You can hire snowmobiles and explore the snowy landscape, accompanied by a guide. There is a tarzan-style adventure park up in the trees, with trails designed for everyone from children aged 4 years to adults. For those who are looking for more relaxing activities the Spa Guitart offers Jacuzzis, thermal baths, saunas, massage, and other beauty treatments. There are several restaurants and cafés which serve everything from typical mountain dishes for the gourmets, to sandwiches and hot soups for skiers and boarders who want to refuel before getting back onto the slopes. A full day ski pass costs 41€ for adults, or 35€ for a half day. Check online for full price list and child discounts. It´s cheap and easy to go for the day, either by train or bus. The “Ski Train” package includes a return ticket from Barcelona and day skipass for 41€ (www.renfe.es), and the “Ski Bus” includes the return trip and skipass for 34€ on Wednesdays and 45€ on Saturdays. Traditional

Catalunya’s Christmas traditions express countless facets of its cultural identity, which you can discover and experience at the Christmas markets. Listen out for the traditional music, see how local homes will be decorated, and taste seasonal specialities. Barcelona’s main Christmas market, La Fira de Santa Llúcia opens on 30th Nov-23th Dec, giving everyone plenty of time to get their Christmas shopping sorted. It is located in front of the Cathedral, in Plaça de la Seu, and is open from 10:30am8:30pm, and 9:30pm at weekends. It is a very Catalan affair so look out for hundreds of caganers, small figures defecating. These statues symbolise fertilisation and renewal, and a “common sense” attitude for which Catalans pride themselves. Another tradition is the caga tió, or “pooing log”, a scooped-out small log with a smiling face, covered in a red blanket. As children hit it with a stick and sing a song the log pours out nougat and sweets which are concealed under its cloak. The Fira de Nadal Christmas market is in front of the Sagrada Familia Basilica from the 8th-23rd. It was started 60 years ago and has now grown into a bustling market with over 200 stands in a stunning location. You will find Christmas trees, garlands, crafts and delicious traditional treats like turrón. Figurines representing characters from the Nativity are crafted out of clay, wood, and plastic, and are scattered all over the stalls. Look out for smaller local markets in your neighbourhood too. Cendrillon

Festival de la Infancia

El Liceu de Barcelona is a world class opera venue, where the likes of Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Catalunya´s own Montserrat Caballé have received standing ovations from an appreciative crowd. It is worth visiting for its regal design and architecture alone. This year´s festive show is a fairy tale in 4 acts. Cendrillon, by Henri Cain is based on Charles Perrault's version of the story of Cinderella, with music by Jules Massenet. It was premièred on the 24th May 1899 at the Opéra Comique in Paris, and is performed for the first time in this venue. The show itself is introduced as an experience that will "sweep us away on a wave of fantasy, an elegant fin-de-siècle pastiche that blends melancholy and humour, naïve and poetic elements, 18th-century galant style and the lightness of Rossini." This tribute to a classic tale brings together literature, music and drama to conjure up an entrancing and delectable world. Gran Teatre del Liceu info www.liceubarcelona.cat/

This vibrant children´s festival is packed with activities, shows and interactive entertainment for all the family. Bring your kids, borrow your friends´, or just come along and treat your own inner child for the day! There will be live bands and music workshops where participants can experiment with making their own sounds. The technology section is a hands-on space that will stimulate the most inquisitive minds. Sports are a great way for children to develop personal and interpersonal skills, from stamina and accuracy to teamwork; find out more here. Other sections are dedicated to culture, the environment and sustainability, and citizenship. Imagination is a theme that runs throughout the festival, through different games and activities. The importance of healthy eating to ensure a child´s vitality, nutrition and long-term well-being is also highlighted through activities, workshops and of course plenty of yummy food! Traditional

New Year´s Eve Barcelona has never been known to turn down any excuse for a fiesta, and tonight is no exception. However, there´s no emblematic meeting spot where partygoers congregate for the bells. Tourists who end up in Plaça Catalunya will just find large crowds, inevitable friction with the police, and swarms of beer-sellers also punting out bottles of cava for the occasion. A better bet is to check out the events in restaurants and clubs. It is traditional to eat 12 grapes with the chimes of midnight, and to wear red underwear for good luck. Many bars don´t open until 1am, as locals tend to have dinner with their family before heading out. Streets and venues of Barcelona

Spotlight: Voltech Party

Barcelona´s Voltech parties promote an unequalled take on great underground techno music.

SUN

Celebrating its tenth year, Voltech is the creation of Carmelo Gomez & Santiago Tena, and its parties go against the city´s mainstream approach to big room electronic music, which is still the ethos today. "The first Voltech was a little like losing your virginity," recalls Santiago. "But we got better as word of mouth got our message out there and soon we were running at full capacities in our venues," he added. "Voltech offered something that was easily availble in the city - basically a techno party supporting local DJs." And then it grew, with the guys hosting their 150th event last

BARDOT's art of...

Gastronomy & wine

Bardot has quickly become a second home to its regular clientele and a welcome surprise for any visitors who stumble upon it. This Catalan take on a French bistro produces innovative menus every day, and they will celebrate their first anniversary on the 14th Dec. Founding partner Rodrigo Varela, originally from Argentina, had already travelled extensively around Spain before moving to Barcelona in 2002. He worked in several notable restaurants here, from Group Tragaluz to Bar Mut before embarking upon his own venture. Location was vital, so when he saw this empty space in Enric Granados he immediately recognised its potential and snapped it up. As Varela points out, there´s a growing “gastronomical triangle” in this part of the Eixample, between Aragón, Diagonal, Enric Granados and Muntaner. It is fast becoming one of the trendiest hotspots for great restaurants, bars and clubs, where people can arrive by taxi, have a few drinks, and walk from one place

32

to the next. Stepping inside you´ll notice the different spaces. The bar area is always lively with conversation, and often enhanced by a barista opening an interesting new wine for clients to try by the glass and compare notes. Wine is taken seriously here, and a custom designed cellar reveals 700+ bottles from Catalunya, France, Italy and beyond. “We like to give people the chance to experience something different,” comments Varela, who is constantly looking out for the best vintages and new proposals. As you step down into the cosy dining area, a delicious scent from the kitchen is sure to waft your way. “Our principles are that fresh, natural traditional dishes are always the best. Eating the way people used to! We buy the best ingredients from all over town, which is a bit of a logistical nightmare,” Varela continues. This month´s seasonal dishes include a rice dish from the Pyrenees with mushrooms and pork, hamburger with foie and apple, and baby sepia with Santa Pau beans. However, the menu largely depends on the ingredients of the day. A special weekend family menu is available with a selection of starters to share, main dishes, and drinks for just 22€ per person. Clients are always well looked after. The staff take pride offering a highly personalized service, which for regulars includes knowing their tastes and allergies. Many don´t even read the menu, they just ask for recommendations, and are always satisfied. But don´t just take our word for it, experience Bardot for yourself.

LOCAL SERVICES

s for residents & visitor

Barcelona boasts a wide range of services for English speaking residents living in the city, and if you have recently moved here they could provide a good first step to getting settled. Services in English are also useful for visitors and business travelers. Moving to a foreign country can be a very nerve wracking experience and you may feel in over your head when it comes to all the Catalan paper work, intimidating offices and never ending (often conflicting!) advice from those who are already settled. However, this does not have to be the case, as all the information you need can be found here and online at www.barcelonaconnect.com. Whether you are looking for work, hoping to start a language course, needing legal advice or even something as simple as registering with your local doctor; there are services out there geared towards helping and advising you.

14 BARRIO GÓTICO

Plaça Reial

First impressions: The heart of Barcelona´s historic centre is a labyrinth of small streets. This was once the Roman town of Barcino, and you´ll find parts of the old Roman wall, tombs, and even columns from the Temple of Augustus. Imposing churches back onto the historic Jewish quarter and lively cafés and tapas bars fill the many squares, from the busy Plaça Reial just off the Ramblas to the more secluded Plaça Sant Felip Neri. Insider tips: Take the time to look up at the builings and notice details like their cast-iron window frames, or a corner statue dedicated to a local saint. Go on a walking tours, and ask the guide to recommend their favourite spots.

Don´t miss...

6 EIXAMPLE ESQUERRA ( LEFT ) 9 3

Fundaciò Antoni Tapiès

First Impressions: The first thing you´ll notice is this district´s distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You´ll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife. Insider tips: There are plenty of quality restaurants offering great value “menu del dia” lunch menus, many of which are not located too far Mfrom the important monuments such as Gaudí´s Pedrera and Casa Batlló. If you fancy some shopping, look out for the smart boutiques concentrated in the top part of the Eixample, near C/ Diagonal.

16 PORT OLíMPIC

The Golden Fish

First Impressions: This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona´s top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. Frank Gehry´s famous “fish” sculpture gives an eclectic touch to the modern leisure complex it stands above. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces, and a busy nightlife scene. Insider Tips: Get up early (or stay out late) and watch the sunrise from the beach. The Icaria cinema on Av. Icaria shows films in Version Original, so you could catch a film in English or Spanish before enjoying an evening meal on the seafront.
