City cycling like never before Discover the city with Steel Donkey Bike Tours (www.steeldonkeybiketours.com). Highlights of their non-touristy tours include visiting the curious cemetery of Poble Nou, tasting local favourites like churros con chocolate, stopping by a recycled fashion workshop and sharing a meal at a squat. No guide books needed here, just a spirit of adventure and a curious heart eager to see a different side of Barcelona!
2 Be cool in cafébrimming Gràcia Gràcia has become Barcelona's hipster centre with its endless selection of curiosity shops, coffee spots and quirky eateries. Think chai tea, think red velvet cake, think colourful squares surrounded by bars ideal for a tipple and shops selling anything from vintage clothing to fresh herbs and you’ve got Gràcia sussed. Full of locals and young expats, this pretty neighbourhood has a lively, arty atmosphere and a truly Catalan-meets-cosmopolitan feel to it.

3 Two blocks of goodies! Kick back with a Catalan-style picnic. The Eixample district is home to some spectacular bodegas, delicatessens and bakeries perfect for picking up typical treats. Two blocks in particular - Carrer d’Aragó and Carrer Valencia between Rambla de Catalunya and Carrer Balmes - have great shops for finding tasty picnic ingredients.
4 Another way of ‘seeing’ Barcelona Tibidabo and Montjuïc are well known for their spectacular views over Barcelona. Few tourists, however, know Turó de la Rovira, just above park Guinardó. This secret echo of the Spanish Civil War sits high atop the tallest hill of the city and arguably offers the best (and least hectic) views. Forget the swarms jostling for the best photo op and join the locals hanging out with their friends, drinking wine from plastic cups and toasting the sunset.

The Modernist movement took place around the turn of the 20th century and left a huge impact on Barcelona's architecture. Barcelona is renowned for its incredible constructions, many of which belong to the legacy of the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (18521926.) His Modernist vision of the late 19th and early 20th century is embodied in many unique and distinctive buildings which are some of Barcelona's top sightseeing attractions, and which receive millions of visitors every year. La Sagrada Familia is the only Modernist basilica in the world, and the undisputed jewel in the crown. Other important works by Gaudí are Casa Milà, an astounding creation originally built as residential flats, and Park Güell.
Casa Lleó Morera
The grid structure of the Eixample district was first designed in the 1860s, and its streets were filled with many innovative creations by Modernist architects. A particularly interesting part of Passeig de Gràcia is known as “la manzana de la discórdia,” or "block of discord," where houses built by the three most important Catalan Modernist architects sit, and clash, side by side. You'll find Gaudí's Casa Batlló, Casa Lleó Morera by Domènech i Montaner and Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch all located around the block of Passeig de Gràcia 43.
Palau de la Música This concert hall was built between 19051908 by the architect Domènech i Montaner. Its lavish interior is centred around a metal structure covered with a colourful mosaic of glass and illuminated by natural light. The main concert auditorium hosts the most prestigious local and international performances every year. Take a guided tour, or even better, enjoy a concert in this world-class venue. The Born is already well known for its nightlife and boutiques, and is now fast establishing a reputation as Barcelona's new up and coming high-end fashion district.

DAY TRIP
SITGES
The beach town of Sitges is just 35km from Barcelona. Every year a riotous carnival is celebrated here, with over 300,000 revellers filling its small streets from dusk til dawn. If you're going to Sitges this month, chances are it's for the carnival. This gay-friendly seaside town is fairly quiet during the winter and starts to wake up with carnival. By the time summer is in full swing its bars are constantly packed, and the beaches are a dense patchwork of coloured towels and tanning bodies. Sitges is internationally renowned for throwing some of the best carnival parties in Spain, which attract many visitors every year. The biggest event is the "Parade of Debauchery," which takes place on Sunday March 2nd, from 7.30pm. Expect a procession full of extravagant and colourful costumes, with feathers, masks and elaborate make-up. Floats pass down the main street, each with their own quirky theme and many with an on-board soundsystem and party crew. Dancers, acrobats and other performers accompany the floats and provide creatively choreographed and often somewhat daring performances.
18
The Children's Parade is a tamer but equally artistic version which takes place on the same day at 3pm, and is also well worth catching. On Weds 5th, the festival officially wraps up with the ‘Burial of the Sardine’, which takes place at 8.30pm on Passeig de la Ribera. According to tradition, ‘King Carnestoltes’ makes an appearance on the first Thursday of the celebrations to welcome in the carnival. He absolves everyone's sins throughout the weekend, and ‘dies’ during the rituals on the 5th, when festive costumes are exchanged for black mourning attire, marking the end of the carnival and beginning of Lent. Sitges also has plenty of sightseeing attractions which are worth visiting. Its 17th century church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla overlooks the seafront and is one of the town's most recognised monuments. Sitges has attracted many artists throughout its history; indeed the Cau Ferrat Museum was the home and studio of the artist and writer Santiago Rusiñol, where he frequently entertained important guests. This is currently closed for refurbishment, so instead we recommend that you visit the Museu Romàntic. It is located in the house where the Llopis family lived during

One of its most prized exhibits is the Lola Anglada collection of antique dolls, which is widely renowned to be one of the best in Europe. Make sure you sample the local Sitges gastronomy too. Cafés and bakeries serve traditional pastries, and the many seafront restaurants offer a delicious selection of Mediterranean specialities and tapas.

Barcelona's markets are both popular tourist attractions and a way of life for the locals. Take the time to wander their perimeter and fall under their unique spell.
22
Whether you're looking for local produce, handmade artisan specialties, or just a browse and a bargain, Barcelona's generous variety of markets will definitely have what you are looking for and so much more. Market culture is a way of life in Barcelona and indeed throughout Spain. It is typical here for the locals to get their vegetables from the greengrocer, their meat from the butchers and their bread fresh and still hot from the bakery oven, as opposed to doing the “big shop” at a large supermarket. You could say that this requires much more time and effort, but the benefits are well worth it.
food is delicious. As you enter you will see a technicolour array of fruits and vegetables, nuts, spices, sweets, cheese... not to mention the extensive fish and seafood section at the back. You'll find several tapas bars and small restaurants inside and around the market, and you can also buy freshly cut portions of fruit, and fruit juices.
The famous Boqueria Market (Las Ramblas) is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, not only because of its location and history, but simply because the
If you take a trip to the uptown district of Sant Gervasi, be sure to visit the Mercat Galvany (Carrer Santaló). You'll find this market inside a gorgeous 19th century iron structure which has high ceilings and stained glass windows.
Over in the Born district, the must-see food market is the Mercat de Santa Caterina (Av. Francesc Cambó). It was completely renovated in 2005 and has a spectacularly colourful tiled roof. Its selection is similar to that of La Boqueria, but it is smaller and decidedly less manic. The restaurant inside is an absolute must visit. Its quirky menu consists of only ingredients from the market itself, and you can watch the world go by as you relax.

It was originally a farmers' market and its permanent structure was inaugurated in 1927. It caters to the high standards of its local residents and sells only the very best quality products from Catalunya and further afield. There are many other local food markets as almost every district has its own, so make sure you keep an eye out for them as you wander around the city. On Sundays at Plaça del Mar, just off Passeig Joan de Borbó in Barceloneta, there is a great little market that is made up of what could only be described as mini-delicatessens. They have an extensive selection of local cheeses from all over the region, as well different dried and cured meats. Natural products such as honey, olive oil and soap are on offer too. If that isn’t enough to entice you in, I have two words for you: free samples. Now that we have covered the most important topic of food, let's have a look at the treasures
ARKET
and trinkets that can be found in numerous other markets around the city. The enormous Mercat dels Encants Vells in Glòries (Avinguda Meridiana 73) has been recently renovated and contains a marvellous assortment of everything that has ever existed. With its jaunty mirrored ceiling and bustling environment, this market is the best place to go for both unique items and everyday necessities. You will find everything from clothes, furniture, domestic appliances, to antiques and much more. Bartering the price down is more acceptable here than at the food markets. If you are into antiques and vintage be sure to attend the Fira Broncanters Antique and Flea Market (Rambla del Mar) on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. They have sprawling collections of jewellery, knick-knacks, old postcards, furniture, and other one off pieces that you are unlikely to pick up elsewhere. Its a very pleasant browsing environment especially on a sunny afternoon, as it is right by the water frontat Port Vell. Everyone loves a trip to H&M and the simplicity of Mercadona, but the markets here are really second to none and a very prominent attraction and feature within the city. With such great variety, high quality and reasonable prices we strongly recommend you put Barcelona's markets high up on your ‘to do’ list this holiday. Happy shopping! Kelly Page

27 - 5 carnival The origins of carnival, also known as carnestoltes, can possibly be traced back to the pagan festivals of Egypt and the Roman empire, and were linked with Bacchanalia spring rituals. This year Barcelona's carnival brings back even more of its own traditions, as well as the colourful processions we all know and love throughout the weekend. Carnival itself begins with the time-honoured tradition of the arrival of King Carnestoltes, who makes a majestic entrance accompanied by his carriage and processional retinue the 7 Ambassadors of Fun. He then ascends a stage outside and proclaims his reign over the Carnival proceedings that will take over the city in the next few days. The evening continues with feathers, costumes and laughter, and the first Masked Ball of the season. Carnival draws to a close on the 3rd with the uniquely Catalan ceremony of the “burial of the sardine,” symbolising the end of the merriment and indulgence, and the beginning of Lent. NIGHTLIFE
Is it summer yet? Hot weather, big acts in all the city's venues, a packed programme of underground parties and Sundays are capturing my interest again, so you would be forgiven for thinking exactly that. It's only March, and the main carnival action kicks in over the first weekend of the month. Sitges is the place to be on Carnival Sunday (2nd) and Tuesday (4th). Mark J, Barcelona Connect's resident DJ, will be at Constantino, spinning tracks at the carnival for his tenth year, and of course you cannot miss the fabulous street parades and performances. Techno hits back with 2 underground music conferences and sideshow events – Mutek (www.mutek.org p29) and Cau D’Orella (www.caudorella.cat) both focus on local talent. Also, Electronik Piknic organisers launch a new event, Brunch Electronik Barcelona on 16th March. Please click on http://soundcloud.com/supagroove/demo to download your free mix of hot tracks for March from Ibiza, Croatia, London & Barcelona! MJ

local talent radar: kayf
Most DJs have their own record label. Kayf Records (meaning peace in Russian) is the brainchild of Artur Nikolaev, a 22 year old producer based at Groove Armada's old studio complex in Barcelona. Preparing for the launch of its first releases, Kayf has lined up some new artists alongside familiar faces from Barcelona's techno elite. Nikolaev has also been releasing tracks on labels such as Sintetics and Cloning Sounds, and you will also catch him warming up for Petar Dundov at Becool Club.
The first Kayf Label Showcase will take place on Thursday 6th of March at one of Barcelona Connect’s favourite venues, BARTS Club on Parallel. The night features 3DJs and this month Artur is joined by fellow label artist Antar and Mark J on warm-up duties. LOCAL SERVICES
s for residents & visitor
Barcelona boasts a wide range of services for English speaking residents living in the city, and if you have recently moved here they could provide a good first step to getting settled. Services in English are also useful for visitors and business travelers. Moving to a foreign country can be a very nerve wracking experience and you may feel in over your head when it comes to all the Catalan paper work, intimidating offices and never ending (often conflicting!) advice from those who are already settled. However, this does not have to be the case, as all the information you need can be found here and online at www.barcelonaconnect.com. Whether you are looking for work, hoping to start a language course, needing legal advice or even something as simple as registering with your local doctor; there are services out there geared towards helping and advising you.

Plaça Reial
First impressions: The heart of Barcelona's historic centre is a labyrinth of small streets. This was once the Roman town of Barcino, and you'll find parts of the old Roman wall, tombs, and even columns from the Temple of Augustus. Imposing churches back onto the historic Jewish quarter and lively cafés and tapas bars fill the many squares, from the busy Plaça Reial just off the Ramblas to the more secluded Plaça Sant Felip Neri. Insider tips: Take the time to look up at the builings and notice details like their cast-iron window frames, or a corner statue dedicated to a local saint. Go on a walking tours, and ask the guide to recommend their favourite spots.

First Impressions: The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife. Insider tips: There are plenty of quality restaurants offering great value “menu del dia” lunch menus, many of which are not located too far Mfrom the important monuments such as Gaudí´s Pedrera and Casa Batlló. If you fancy some shopping, look out for the smart boutiques concentrated in the top part of the Eixample, near C/ Diagonal.

16 PORT OLíMPIC
The Golden Fish
First Impressions: This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. Frank Gehry's famous “fish” sculpture gives an eclectic touch to the modern leisure complex it stands above. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces, and a busy nightlife scene. Insider Tips: Get up early (or stay out late) and watch the sunrise from the beach. The Icaria cinema on Av. Icaria shows films in Version Original, so you could catch a film in English or Spanish before enjoying an evening meal on the seafront.
