CYCLING IN the city

· · ·

Live

Protective helments are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 16. Cyclists must use the cycle lanes; if there isn’t one, stay in the lane closest to the pavement. Using the bus lane is not permitted. Bikes can only ride on pavements that are wider than 5 metres.

in the street

· · · 8

Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and can be fined from 30€ - 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.

INFO

in your apartment

· · ·

Please keep quiet between 10pm and 8am. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday! Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sounds carry up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Be aware that heels on tiles or parquet floor make a loud click which can usually be heard in the apartment below.

ON THE BEACH

· ·

Don’t use any soap or shampoo at the showers by the beach. It pollutes the water, and you can be fined. Respect the coloured flags. Green means the sea is calm, yellow indicates medium hazard such as slight currents or jellyfish, and a red flag warns you not to enter the water.

RECYCLING Barcelona is an eco-friendly city. Keep an eye out for the coloured recycling bins nearest to your apartment:

Yellow: plastic and tetra pack Green: glass Blue: paper Brown: organic Grey: non-recyclable items

Gothic district

If the stones of Barcelona’s old town could whisper they would tell of a fasciating history. If you have chosen an apartment in this neighbourhood the first thing you will notice is the labyrinth of narrow streets and densely packed apartments. Most of Barcelona's administrative buildings are here. Many of the old buildings don't have lifts, and the demographics are a mix of older residents and international residents who stay for a few months or longer. Noise pollution is a problem and has caused many bars to lose their license, so make sure you leave venues quietly.

Barcelona neighbourhoods

6 7

Discover some insights into the unique characteristics of the neighbourhood you'll be staying in.

3 1 2 4

2

5

Born

This trendy neighbourhood has several prestigious museums and galleries. It was traditionally the commercial district, and there are still many boutiques and shops that sell artisan products. There is a mixture of old apartments and ultra modern renovations.

3

Raval

In the last 20 years this neighbourhood has improved drastically, with the creation of the Rambla Raval and new cultural attractions. It remains the most multicultural inner city district. It's generally safe, but be alert when crossing the Raval at night.

10

INFO 4

Barceloneta

Nothing represents Mediterranean Barcelona like the Barceloneta neighbourhood! This was traditionally home to a modest fishing community. You can still find some old style bars and tavers, with some of the best seafood and tapas in town. It's worth mentioning that the recent tourism boom has left some of its older residents feeling disorientated. Most of the apartments are just 30m2 with one bedroom, so living conditions are tight. If you're staying in an apartment here make sure you don't disturb your neighbours as the houses tend to have paper-thin walls.

5

Port Olympic

Many of its apartment blocks and facilities were built for Barcelona's 1992 Olympic Games in 1992. This seaside neighbourhood lies between Barceloneta and the more industrial area of Poble Nou.

6

GrĂ cia

Once an independent village, GrĂ cia still retains a strong sense of its own identity; alternative, slightly bohemian, and very Catalan. It is popular with students, and has lots of squares lined by bars and terraces, and a busy agenda of local festivals and cultural events.

7

Eixample

Eixample name means "grid", and this large district stretches in a criss-cross of avenues above the city centre. Many of its apartments were built by Modernist architects, with high ceilings and windows and elegant finishings.

AMICAL DE MAUTHAUSEN I ALTRES CAMPS i de totes les víctimes del nazisme d’Espanya

Gaudí’s Legacy There’s no doubt about it, the world is in awe of Antoni Gaudí’s amazing architecture, and rightly so. Barcelona is sprinkled with his beautiful designs from Park Güell to the Sagrada Família, and from lesser known cast-iron lamp posts in Plaça Reial to the Casa Vicens and Torre Bellesguard. The Casa Batlló is one of his most famous works in the city, located on the busy Passeig de Gràcia.

Reinterpreting Casa Batlló

Nature and Legend This unique house is full of colour and unusual perspectives. Its design is unlike anything you have seen before, with intriguing materials and design ideas to explore in every corner. Known to locals as the Casa dels Ossos, or “house of bones,” the outside façade of the structure looks like it is made of bones, while the scaly roof is thought to represent the legendary dragon slain by St Jordi.

Magic Nights Casa Batlló takes on a new life after dark, with the “Magic Nights on the Dragon Roof Terrace”. As the sunset sky lowers its darkening curtain over night time Barcelona, the shadows and fading light catch the details in Gaudí’s carefully sculptured terrace. A live music show with talented musicians sets the mood, topped off by a glass of cava, and other optional food and drinks. Step into this fairytale from 9pm every Wednesday to Saturday. (29€ including a drink.) There’s also the option of a combined visit which starts at 8pm and includes the Casa Batlló’s carefully curated new audio guide (36€). Magic Nights at Casa Batlló: 5th June-26th September. Passeig de Gràcia 43.

Cemetery Tourism: The new Barcelona cultural offer

C

Cemetery tourism is becoming more and more popular in Europe, especially since there are different types of cultural events taking place on their grounds. Barcelona is proud to be able to share the valuable funerary patrimony that can be found in its two monumental cemeteries, Poblenou Cemetery and Montjuïc Cemetery, both of which are internationally recognized by the ASCE (Association of Significant Cemeteries of Europe). Poblenou Cemetery was the first municipal cemetery in the city, a reference for the entire country and a work of neoclassical art and Egyptian elements from the beginning of the 19th century. Montjuïc Cemetery represents the later expansion of the city and the economic growth of Barcelona. This economic boom brought modernity, industry, and commerce to the city, which was shown by the large pantheons and sculptured tombs designed by the best artists and architects of the age. CBSA has developed different cultural routes in their cemeteries which show the architectural richness and artistry of the sepultures of the illustrious figures buried there. The routes also help us to build a narrative which reflects the evolution of the last two centuries in the history of Barcelona. To give the visitor the best experience possible, there’s a free app with a map of the Poblenou Cemetery, and an audio tour, available in three languages. Montjuïc Cemetery has four different cultural routes, one for every type of interest: an artistic route, an historical route, a route that is a combination of the two, and a fourth route that takes the visitor to the Fossar de la Pedrera, which has a memorial to the victims of the Spanish Civil War, the repression of Franco’s regime and the victims of the Holocaust.

FEATURES

A highlight of Montju誰c Cemetery is that it houses the Funeral Carriage Collection, the only one of its kind in Europe. The Collection is made up of 23 original pieces which were used in funerals in the city of Barcelona for more than 100 years. A visit to the Collection offers the opportunity to observe works of great artistic value from a not-too-distant past, when death was accepted in a different way and funeral carriages were a main part of the funeral ceremony organized in the streets of Barcelona. Both Poblenou and Montju誰c cemeteries organise Night Tours twice a year. These tours allow visitors to see the wealth of the artistry of the cemeteries in a special way. This is one of the most successful activities that CBSA organise. The tour guides dress in period costume and actors play the part of people important to the history of Barcelona. Musicians perform in different points along the tour and the path is illuminated by candlelight. These tours take the visitors past the most beautiful and interesting parts of the cemeteries.

Artisan y Jeweller rn

in the Bo

T

he Medieval Born neighbourhood was a busy hub for artisans and trades people. Its street names still remind us of their specialisations, from “Carrer Cotoners” (cotton) and “Plaça de la Llana” (wool), to Carrer de l’Oli (oil) and “Carrer del Civader” (oatmeal). Fast forward a few centuries and the artisans are back, this time with fashion, accessories and crafts. Local resident Joan Rovira, a jeweller for 30 years, recently inaugurated a shop in the heart of the Born district. Why did you choose to work with bamboo in your jewellery? I like to combine organic forms with geometric shapes, using organic materials and metal. Bamboo is strong and light, which makes it perfect for jewellery, and it's easy to obtain. I’ve got a few favourite spots in the Vallés area… and sometimes friends collect it for me. Is there any piece you’re especially proud of? These series of earrings are interesting as they have both a vertical and horizontal axis. There’s a simple one, and a multi-layered version. What does the future look like for an artisan craftsman like yourself? I'm optimistic. People are now returning to hand crafted goods, they’re sick of so much globalisation, where everything seems the same. There’s more consciousness about the process of mass production, coupled with an appreciation of quality and authenticity that you won’t find on a production line. Why do you think the Born neighbourhood has become such an artisan hotspot? Its spaces lend themselves easily to creating workshops and small shops. I’m so grateful to have found this spot in C/ Cotoners, it’s perfect! I’ve got my workshop upstairs and shop downstairs. The ceiling beams are all original. Plenty of tourists pass through here and there’s a lively international and local community. Tell us something we’d never guess about your jewellery Every new creation is given the name of the first person to have bought it. You see those hoop earrings with the coloured bamboo triangle? They’re called “Momo”. Joan Rovira, Carrer Cotoners 10

Day Trip

TOSSA DE MAR

This pretty town on the Costa Brava is just 100km north of Barcelona, and a perfect destination for a day trip – or even better, a weekend away. Tossa has it all – long golden beaches, secluded rocky coves, a wealth of history to explore, and great restaurants.

DISCOVER TOSSA

BEACHES

Roman history. One of the most important Roman villas was the Casa Ametllers, at Av. del Pelegrí, 5. Its thermal baths, mosaics, fountain and majestic rooms transport us to another era.

The natural landscape of the Costa Brava is breathtaking. Platja Gran stretches in front of the town, and the smaller Platja d’es Colodar is ideal for those seeking more seclusion. Drive up the coast and you'll find plenty of picture-perfect gems such as Cala Bona and Cala Pona, rocky coves with azure waters framed by dark green pine trees.

Old town fortifications. High stone walls guarded the Medieval town, protecting its inhabitants from invasions. Its original structures date back to the 13th century and still stand tall. Municipal museum Enjoy a blast of culture at Spain's first contemporary art gallery, which opened in 1935. Tossa was a haven for avant-garde artists and intellectuals, including Marc Chagall and André Masson. A stroll through town Quality craftsmanship glimmers in shop windows; you’ll find jewellery and souvenirs that are worth splashing out on.

RESTAURANTS Fresh fish is a speciality, and if choosing tapas try the fish options such as calamari and sardines. The street of Calle Portal has several good restaurants, including traditional fisherman style cuisine at Can Comas (Portal 22) and Can Carlus (Portal 20), and local Mediterranean specialties at Can Pini (Portal 12).

gaudí's pedrera: the origins

This spectacular night-time itinerary in one of Barcelona’s most emblematic buildings is a full-immersion experience that will give you a deeper insight into Antoni Gaudí’s creative vision. The architect was highly influenced by nature, translating its organic shapes and sounds into the architectural features of his works. An audiovisual show takes us on a journey back to the origins of life, through projections in the stairwells, evocative lighting and an atmospheric soundtrack. Explore the building’s nooks and crannies, experience the Roof Terrace with its unique chimneys, and toast the stars with a glass of cava at the end of the evening. Open from 9pm-11pm every day. 34€. Sant Joan Traditional

The night of Sant Joan is celebrated throughout Catalunya with a lot of fun and a lot of noise. Its indisputably pagan origins go back to the celebrations of the summer solstice. Sant Joan is always on the 23rd June, although the shortest day is now the 21st June. The most popular place to enjoy the party is on the beach, and it's the one night of the year when the chiringuito beach bars can stay open until dawn. All the coastline gets packed as friends gather to while the night away drinking cava and eating coca cake against a backdrop of incessant bangs. All over Barcelona, especially the beach.

arcelona’s annual Sónar festival celebrates its 22nd year as an international reference for multimedia audiovisual art, music and technology, from the 18th-20th June 2015. Creativity continues to permeate every pore of its perimeters and agenda, and its futureorientated exposé of tipping trends reflects the most cutting edge of contemporary sonic culture. Sónar by Day headliners include Hot Chip and Autechre (18th), the experimental Squarepusher (19th) and deep house meister Henrik Schwarz. (20th). Expect epic shows from Skrillex (19th) and The Chemical Brothers (20th) at Sónar By Night. The obligatory blast from the past is served up by legends Duran Duran, and of course it just wouldn’t be Sónar without the likes of Laurent Garnier, Dubfire, Tiga and Ralph Lawson.

T

his year also marks the 3rd edition of Sónar +D, a parallel event dedicated to creativity, technology and business. New opportunities, synergies and developments are constantly breaking on the shores of the digital economy, and Sónar +D offers a unique space for entrepreneurs, technology developers and artists to connect, exchange ideas and keep evolving together. Participants include Kickstarter, Pinterest, Vimeo and Google Creative Labs. If your talents and interests are afloat on the oceans of the creative industry then maybe you should also be checking into Sónar+D. www.sonar.es
