Der November ist für alle Berliner ein Monat des Erinnerns. Tatsächlich löste der Fall der Berliner Mauer am 9. November 1989 auf der ganzen Welt ­begeisterte emotionale Reaktionen aus. Der November ist auch ein Monat ­persönlicher Verbindungen. Der Tag unseres heutigen Konzerts fällt zusammen mit dem Geburtstag des Künstlers Robert Mapplethorpe, dem Todestag meines Mannes, Fred Sonic Smith, und dem Geburtstag meines kleinen Enkels. Tony Shanahan und ich haben dafür ein Programm zusammengestellt, in dem sich Geburt, Tod, Übergang und Hoffnung wiederspiegeln, und wir schließen uns damit im Geiste dem Gedenken an den Fall der Mauer und an die Vereinigung der wunderbaren Stadt Berlin an.

November, for all Berliners, is a month of remembrance. Indeed, globally, it was emotionally inspiring to witness the Berlin Wall toppled on November 9, 1989. November is also a month of personal connections. The day of tonight’s concert marks the birthday of the artist Robert Mapplethorpe, the passing day of my late husband Fred Sonic Smith, and the birthday of my young grandson.

Tony Shanahan and I will be presenting a program reflecting birth, death, ­transition, and hope, joining in spirit the commemoration of the fall of the Wall and the unification of the great city of Berlin.

Patti Smith Die in Chicago geborene Patti Smith wuchs in New Jersey auf und lebt seit 1967 in New York. Ihr erstes Album Horses erschien 1975; seitdem wurde sie viermal für den Grammy nominiert, zuletzt 2017 für die Audioversion ihres Buches M Train. Für den Song „Mercy Is“ aus dem Film Noah erhielt sie eine Golden-Globe-Nominierung. Ihr ­Erinnerungsbuch Just Kids, in dem sie ihre Freundschaft und gemeinsame ­Arbeit mit dem Fotografen Robert Mapplethorpe beschreibt, wurde 2010 mit dem National Book Award aus­ gezeichnet. Im September dieses Jahres veröffentlichte sie ihr jüngstes Buch Year of the Monkey. Patti Smiths Werke der bildenden Kunst waren in Galerien und Museen weltweit zu sehen. Sie ist Mitglied der Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, wurde 2005 vom französischen Kultusministerium als Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres geehrt und ­erhielt 2011 den schwedischen Polar Music Prize, den inoffiziellen Nobelpreis für Musik. Sie ist Ehrendoktorin der Rowan State University, des Pratt Institute und des School of the Arts ­Institute in Chicago.

Born in Chicago and raised in New Jersey, Patti Smith has lived in New York since 1967. She released her first album, Horses, in 1975 and has been nominated for four Grammy Awards, most recently in 2017 for the ­spoken-­word recording of her book M Train. She received a Golden Globe ­nomination for the song “Mercy Is” from the film Noah. Her acclaimed memoir Just Kids, which chronicles her

friendship and journey in art with ­photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, won the 2010 National Book Award.

Year of the Monkey, her most recent book, was released this past September.

Patti Smith’s art has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. An inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she was named a Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2005 and ­received Sweden’s Polar Music Prize, the unofficial Nobel Prize for Music, in 2011. She holds honorary doctorates from Rowan State University, the Pratt Institute, and the School of the Art ­Institute of Chicago.

Musician, songwriter, and producer Tony Shanahan grew up in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He is the founder of the Slaves of New Brunswick and was a member of the New York–based band Health and Happiness Show in the early 1990s. His collaborators have included artists such as Michael Stipe, David
