Die Sopranistin Barbara Hannigan zählt zu den unkonventionellsten Künstlerinnen unserer Tage und ist eine ausgewiesene Spezialistin für zeitgenössische Musik – mehr als 100 neue Werke hat sie bisher uraufgeführt. Doch der Gesangszyklus Jumalattaret des New Yorker Komponisten und Avantgardisten John Zorn stellte auch sie zunächst vor scheinbar unüberwindliche Herausforderungen. Im Jahr 2018 brachte sie das hochvirtuose Werk, das auf Texten aus dem finnischen Nationalepos Kalevala basiert, schließlich auf die Bühne. Mit Bertrand Chamayou am Klavier präsentiert sie es nun im Pierre Boulez Saal, zusammen mit Olivier Messiaens Chants de terre et de ciel von 1938. Ausgewählte Klavierwerke des russischen Klangmagiers Alexander Skrjabin vervollständigen das Programm.

Soprano Barbara Hannigan is among today’s most adventurous artists and a renowned expert in contemporary music, having given the world premieres of more than 100 new works to date. The vocal cycle Jumalattaret by New York­born avant­garde composer John Zorn, however, seemed to pose impossible challenges even for her. She finally performed the highly virtuoso work, which is based on texts from the Finnish national epic Kalevala, in 2018. Together with pianist Bertrand Chamayou, she now presents it at the Pierre Boulez Saal, juxtaposed with Olivier Messiaen’s Chants de terre et de ciel of 1938. Selected piano works by Russian sound mystic Alexander Scriabin round out the evening’s program.

Anlässlich seines Pierre Boulez Saal­Debüts in der vergangenen Spielzeit präsentierte das amerikanische JACK Quartet das Werk Celare des türkischamerikanischen Komponisten Cenk Ergün. Mit dem Schwesterstück Sonare beschließen die vier Musiker ihr diesjähriges Programm, in dem neben Ruth Crawford Seegers Streichquartett und Morton Feldmans Structures von 1951 auch Carrot Revolution der jungen Komponistin und Klima­Aktivistin Gabriella Smith aus dem Jahr 2015 zu hören ist.

As part of its Pierre Boulez Saal debut last season, the JACK Quartet performed Celare by TurkishAmerican composer Cenk Ergün. Its companion piece, Sonare, concludes the program the four musicians have chosen for this year. It also features Ruth Crawford

Seeger’s String Quartet and Morton Feldman’s Structures of 1951, as well as Carrot Revolution, written by the young composer and climate activist Gabriella Smith in 2015.

Mehr als 15 Jahre nach seinem ersten Streichquartett Arcadiana schrieb Thomas Adès mit dem 2010 uraufgeführten The Four Quarters ein zweites. „Während dieser Zeit ist Musik für mich nur noch mysteriöser geworden“, bemerkte der britische Komponist in gewohnt enigmatischer Art. In vier Sätzen folgt das Werk dem Ablauf eines Tages – vom Einbruch der Nacht über Morgendämmerung und Tageslicht bis zur mystischen „twenty­fifth hour“. Das Danish String Quartet kombiniert die Komposition mit Quartetten von Joseph Haydn und Dmitri Schostakowitsch. Zum Abschluss des Programms präsentieren die vier Musiker wie gewohnt eigene Arrangements skandinavischer Volksmusik.

More than 15 years after finishing his first string quartet, Arcadiana, Thomas Adès wrote a second one, The Four Quarters, which premiered in 2010. “All I’ve been able to discover over this time is that music only gets more and more mysterious,” the British composer said in his usual enigmatic way. In four movements, the work traces the passing of a day—from nightfall to dawn and daylight to the mystical “twenty­fifth hour.” The Danish String Quartet combines the piece with quartets by Joseph Haydn and Dmitri Shostakovich. The program concludes with the four musicians’ trademark arrangements of Scandinavian folk music.
