9 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE SWISS RED CROSS
ANNEMARIE HUBER-HOTZ
A healthy life for all – that is the third of the 17 goals for sustainable development. And Switzerland is committed to putting the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda into practice. A healthy life for all is also the goal of Swiss Red Cross programmes. A great deal of progress has already been made. For example, child mortality has been halved over the last 25 years. And yet, according to World Health Organization statistics, every day as many as 16,000 children still die before their fifth birthday. That is more than three times as many as the permanent population of St. Moritz. So there is no reason to be complacent. In our programmes we strive to set up healthcare systems adapted to the living conditions in particularly disadvantaged regions and in partnership with the local population. Special attention is always paid to the women, young mothers and their children. We want to help them live better, healthier lives. This is also the case in Ecuador, in the region that is the starting point for the rivers that flow down through the Amazon. Doctors, dentists and midwives travel up and down stream by boat, as a rule visiting the local population three times a year. That may not seem much, but
for those concerned it's enormous progress. The examinations and vaccinations they carry out often mean the difference between life and death. These programmes help us to fulfil our duty of humanity, protecting human life, health and dignity. A large number of private donors, companies and foundations support us in our work. We are extremely grateful for the help we get from our Swiss Red Cross Gala guests so that we can run our programmes for the most vulnerable sectors of the world's population. I am grateful that you can help us to protect the lives of young mothers and their children. I wish you all a very pleasant evening!

SAVING CHILDREN'S LIVES IN THE AMAZON BASIN THE GALA COMMITTEE’S VISIT IN THE FIELD

On the boat in the early morning hours: Many small villages can be reached only by boat.
Children and newborn infants in Ecuador are suffering. They do not get the vaccines they need, they cannot go to the dentist and when they fall ill there is no medical care. Why is that? Because the family doctor or the healthcare centre are simply too far away. Because their parents just cannot afford to take them to the nearest hospital where they can get the medical care they need. A third of Ecuador’s population is affected – more than 5 million people. The Swiss Red Cross has undertaken to change this situation. On an invitation from the Swiss Red Cross (SRC), in October 2017 the Swiss Red Cross Gala Board St. Moritz was able to see for itself how the SRC is working to improve basic health in Ecuador. We are long awaited in Aguas Blancas. The 'waiting room' is full. Young and old, men, women and children. But primarily children. Some have travelled in from neighbouring communities, others even over the border from Colombia. Word spreads fast about the visit from the mobile healthcare team. Here in the Amazon basin, where the nearest town is several hours away by boat. Where a tank of petrol is difficult to come by and expensive. The small village can be reached only by river, because there are no roads through the thick jungle. On average it costs USD 20 for a round trip from Aguas Blancas to Puerto El Carmen. For a

farmer earning just USD 60 a month, that's a small fortune. We boarded the boat early in the morning, with the heat of the tropics already weighing us down. Thermometers here in the Amazon basin stand at a constantly humid 30 degrees and the nights are barely any cooler.
hall. Next door is the school and a 'kitchen' where the women prepare a feast in our honour, the local dishes maito de tilapia and guanta. The fish is baked in the leaves of the yaki-panga tree and seasoned with yucca and lemon juice. For the guanta, the men made a special hunting trip.
With us in the boat are a doctor, two dentists and a nurse. They have brought their mobile consulting room: blood-pressure monitor, stethoscope, medicines, sterile materials such as gloves, face masks or serviettes, dentist's drills and hygiene apparatus, together with a compact generator, food supplements for infants, and teaching materials for awareness and education campaigns. Just what the health team needs in the field. Two or three times a month they spend a week travelling from village to village. So each community gets a visit once or twice a year. Sometimes midwives and health promoters join them on their tour to run awareness and education campaigns in one community after another along the river. The team examines and treats about 55 patients a day.
A total of 18 families live here, scattered around the community. Walking from one house to another takes about 10 minutes through the undergrowth.
We are accompanied by Geovanny Manuel Gutierrez Brito, the doctor for the healthcare district, the nurse Luis Armando Cortez Cabezas, and Yandri David Bazurto Pico and Mariana Lorena Morales RincĂłn, the two dentists. They are an experienced team and it takes only half an hour for them to set up the three health stations. The patients wait in the same space as the consultations, in the Aguas Blancas community
“It's shocking when we take so much for granted in terms of quality of life and safety, then you come here and see that, despite their bitter poverty and helplessness, these people welcome us with open arms. Silvio Martin Staub The healthcare visit starts with Luis Armando Cortez Cabezas. The nurse listens, asks questions and reassures the patients. Then he measures blood pressure, weight and height.
12 Alita has her baby teeth properly maintained, not a single hole: Richard Dillier can see for himself.
“ The most fascinating thing is the indigenous people's determination and enthusiasm to make the most of their situation, even when it's really tough. So the value of every franc donated is doubled by their own efforts. Richard Dillier
Especially the children. Have they grown? Have they put on weight? They are examined regularly just like our babies and infants. Luis Armando Cortez Cabezas knows the signs of underdevelopment. A loss of weight, thin skin, hair loss, and tiredness, for example, are an indication of malnutrition that can severely hamper a child's development. The usual diet here in the Amazon is far from varied. People live on the fish they catch and the few vegetables they manage to grow for themselves. But the garden is repeatedly under water. Aguas Blancas has been flooded seven times in 2017. The river water rose to three metres deep and in the waiting room it came up to patients' chests. When the waters rise, there is a much greater danger that the drinking water will be contaminated and that diseases spread. Each time they visit, the healthcare team seizes the opportunity of this community gathering to teach them about nutri-
tion, hygiene and prevention. What is a balanced diet? Why is it so important to have regular check-ups? Why should you brush milk teeth? Using a giant set of teeth and toothbrush, dentist Mariana Lorena Morales RincĂłn shows even the smallest children how to brush their teeth properly. Alita does it right. Her milk teeth don't have any cavities. Our Committee member, dentist Richard Dillier, can see that for himself. But if any teeth need to be drilled and filled, dentist Yandri David Bazurto Pico has everything he needs in his mobile medical kit. The treatment and medicines administered by Geovanny Manuel Gutierrez Brito to the sick patients is free of charge. Meanwhile, at another health station, the family doctor is examining Marley Elisabeth Papa, who has come for a check-up with her mother Martina Papa Achan.
She is not afraid of the check-ups: Marley Elisabeth Papa has come for a check-up with her mother Martina Papa Achan.
A garden with healing and ritual plants: The Red Cross promotes its projects working with local healers.
Enlightenment playfully with the hopping game 'hopscotch': It is often easier to talk about serious topics while playing a game.
Education and presentation in Loreto The scenery changes. In Loreto, a few hours' drive south from Puerto El Carmen where we set off by boat to come to Aguas Blancas, to our surprise in the middle of the jungle we discover a carefully tended garden with medicinal and ritual plants. The Amazon basin is home to an unparalleled diversity of plants with almost 5,000 species registered. The Quechua are familiar with more than 150 types of plant that are still used as food and traditional therapies alongside modern medicine. They grow medicinal plants here and export them to other regions of the country. A sign says 'Hoja antibiotica'. Chukri Yuyu is a medicinal plant used in gynaecology and paediatrics.
the victim or you see it in a neighbour's or a friend's home. Or: How do you find out if you've got tuberculosis? Through games, the health promoters pass on knowledge about topics such as health, individual rights, alcohol abuse, violence, sexual and reproductive health, and teenage pregnancies. The games help the villagers to learn new facts or refresh what they learnt previously. And they also learn how to talk about these taboo topics, such as domestic violence.
In Ecuador the SRC also promotes collaboration with local healers and supports training for traditional midwives and health promoters. We can see with our own eyes how they work. Under a canopy, men and women form a large circle around a game of hopscotch. But here the well-known playground game is not played with a stone but with a die. The players need to hop to the right square. The questions in the square are called out. For example: Who can you contact if you come across a case of domestic violence? Whether you are

“I'm impressed with the friendliness and openness of the indigenous people. And I'm happy that we can help 'almost forgotten' people. The professionalism and energ y invested by the staff of the local organization has convinced me it's all worthwhile.” Marianne Walde
IMPROVED QUALITY OF LIFE FOR 2,500 PEOPLE Putumayo in Sucumbios Province is one of the poorest regions in Ecuador. Whereas on average a quarter of the population of Ecuador is poor, in the SRC project areas this jumps to 70–90%. In Putumayo the SRC mainly works with the Quechua, an indigenous minority. They live in tiny isolated villages that can often be reached only by river or on horseback along narrow tracks. Poverty has enormous repercussions on their health. The SRC is the only relief organization committed to improving healthcare in this remote region. Our work helps to improve the quality of life, ensures that people know they have a right to good health, and reinforces application of the government's health policy for families and communities.
OUR LOCAL PARTNERS The SRC has been working in Ecuador for 15 years with a non-governmental health organization. RIOS – Red Internacional de Organizaciones de Salud – has helped the indigenous communities in the Amazon provinces of Sucumbios and Orellana to set up their own organization. These are our partners and make a considerable contribution to primary healthcare and establishment of regional health networks.

THE SWISS RED CROSS GALA BOARD Dear guests
On behalf of the Swiss Red Cross, we most warmly welcome you to the Swiss Red Cross Gala 2018 at the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz. After a successful first Swiss Red Cross Gala celebrated in the Engadine in 2016 with proceeds of CHF 830,000, we are proud to continue our work as the Swiss Red Cross Gala Board St. Moritz. In October 2017, a delegation of the board had the unique opportunity to visit the Swiss Red Cross health project in the Amazon Basin in Ecuador. The Swiss Red Cross Gala Board was deeply impressed by the professional and sustainable work being done by the Swiss Red Cross in Ecuador. The proceeds from the Swiss Red Cross Gala 2018 in St. Moritz will go towards helping the victims of forgotten disasters and the health programme in Ecuador.

We are happy to share this special evening with you and would be very grateful if you would support us by giving generously. Yours faithfully The Swiss Red Cross Gala Board
23 MESSAGE FROM THE CEO OF MEDICA
DR. FRANZ KÄPPELI
In 1956, medica was established by Dr. Lambelet as a laboratory. From 1972 onward, it constantly expanded in line with medical progress under the auspices of Dr. Käppeli. The laboratory has been operated under the name “medica” since 1976 and was recognized by the Swiss national authorities that same year under Dr. Käppeli. medica provides a broad range of high-quality services in laboratory diagnostics and pathology, which are also available inter-regionally to referring parties, such as physicians in private practice, clinics and patients. Our work revolves around our patients and around the challenge of always being able to offer the best. As a teaching institution recognized by FAMH, it is a matter of course for us to support and co-organize advanced and continuing training for physicians and medical personnel. Our humanitarian commitment is part of our guiding principles. It is therefore only natural for us to cooperate with and support non-profit humanitarian institutions. Examples of our numerous and diverse projects are the Theodora Children's Charity, Kids of Africa, Special Olympics Switzerland, the Muri Competition for young musical talents and the Swiss Red Cross (SRC).
Our connection with the SRC is special, given our routine use of laboratory diagnostics and our emergency medical services. SRC is the best known and most multi-faceted humanitarian organization in Switzerland and we are proud to be allowed to support it. We enjoy looking back with you on a successful history of more than 150 years and want to help you to continue making your motto “For more humanity” a reality. May all your different activities be highly successful. That is medica's wish for you.

The Red Cross is a recognized international institution with a long history. The organization is regarded as being extremely trustworthy – a quality that is fundamental for its success in many ways. This position also allows the organization access to prestigious institutions in both the public and private arena, which is necessary to be effective in the field and to fulfill its mission.

One part of this program is in Switzerland, where we have a strong relationship with the Swiss Mountain Aid Program, and the other part is abroad, where we have a co-operation with Aiducation. When our partners engage themselves in a program run with these organizations, they experience what it means to live in far more difficult circumstances than they do. It is during these times that they put first not our clients, but the people in need.
BDO Ltd., the world's fifth largest audit and consulting network, is very proud to associate itself with the Red Cross. We are present in 162 countries around the globe in a tight network of independent member firms. For a professional services firm such as ours, trustworthiness is also a key factor. We can succeed only when our audit opinions, our tax advice, and our bookkeeping and outsourcing services are seen as products of high-quality work.
Red Cross and BDO have many similarities and common goals. It is from this connection that we have decided to support the Red Cross at this Gala. We wish the Red Cross and all its employees and stakeholders prosperity and continued success.

27 CARL F. BUCHERER MESSAGE FROM
For Carl F. Bucherer, it is an honor to support this year’s Swiss Red Cross Gala Dinner – and not only because the Swiss watch manufacturer’s history began just 22 years after the foundation of the Swiss Red Cross. With the opening of a first retail store in Lucerne in 1888, entrepreneur Carl Friedrich Bucherer made his dream a reality. Shortly thereafter, he began producing his own high-class jewelry and watches. The business quickly came to stand for highquality products, but also for passion, tradition, and innovation. And what started in the heart of Switzerland went on to become an international success story that continues until this very day in the hands of its founding family. As one of the few remaining family-run Swiss watch manufacturers, Carl F. Bucherer considers corporate social responsibility to be more than just a trend – it is deeply manifested in the brand’s corporate culture and represents one of its key principles and core values. The company believes that passion, commitment, and hard work can really drive change. Therefore, the established Swiss brand supports various projects in Switzerland and around the globe. For example, Carl F. Bucherer is involved in the Only Watch charity auction, a biannual event that raises money for Duchenne muscular dystrophy
research. For this good cause, the family-run business creates and donates a single-edition timepiece every two years. On a global scale, the brand sponsors the Manta Trust, which plays an important part in finding out more about manta rays, a creature about which little is known, and thus helps to preserve their habitat. By offering help to vulnerable and deprived people, when it was founded, the Swiss Red Cross put an important idea into action that successfully spread from Switzerland all over the world. Carl F. Bucherer is proud to endorse the important work of the Swiss Red Cross by donating a timepiece whose unique spirit originates from the very heart of Switzerland: a high quality manufacture watch “Made of Lucerne.”

29 MESSAGE FROM THE OWNER AND CEO OF MAURA WASESCHA AG
MAURA WASESCHA
In the 40 years of working in the Engadine’s luxury property market, philanthropy and social commitment has more and more become one of my particular concerns. Supporting those who are less lucky in life is an investment I have never regretted so far; for instance, as the co-founder of the St. Moritz Award, which has supported the Milan Foundation, Right to Play and the José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation to help children have some pleasure in life and to give them a perspective. I am therefore very delighted to support this year’s Swiss Red Cross Gala as a gold sponsor. Dale Carnegie is reported to be the father of “Life is truly a boomerang. What you give, you get.” This is why in my whole career I have strived to put the focus on my clients’ wishes and needs. Buying or renting a home has a lot to do with emotions. This is why clients seek a partner they can trust fully. Trust that is based on discretion. At the same time though they want someone who gives them time. Time to be heard but also time they can invest, safe in the knowledge that a team with excellent contacts works for them in the background, providing personalised solutions available with the simplicity of one phone number.
And I am honoured to say that due to happy clients the office of Maura Wasescha has grown to be the leading address for luxury properties in the Engadine. Exclusivity and absolute discretion are our trademarks and the perfect sense of well-being the basis for our sustainable success. I look forward to sharing some of this success with the Swiss Red Cross at their gala and hope that this enjoyable event brings plenty of support and solidarity to the lives of the children in the Amazon basin.

N O 11 Bid for a unique painting that does not yet exist! If you want to be portrayed in the style of Klimt, Renoir, van Gogh or Picasso, then a bid would be worth a serious consideration. A painting is up for auction that does not yet exist! It will only be painted, when the surcharge falls to its highest bid. The internationally known artist Wolfgang Beltracchi, known as a clever and highly talented art forger, has returned to the path of virtue and will paint for the highest bidder a painting according to his individual specifications and desired style. This is a unique offer, which Beltracchi will offer worth CHF 60 000. The artist Wolfgang Beltracchi has the ingenious gift of empathizing intuitively with other artists, that he can fully embrace their expressiveness. He does not at all copy the great masters, but to a certain extent completes their oeuvre in astonishing congeniality. The fact is that his 40 year-old pictorial art was completely unnoticed by the art world and was revealed due only to the circumstance of a small, non-simultaneous color pigmentation. Meanwhile, he signs the works with his name and remains faithful to the stylistic plurality of different artistic periods. Value: CHF 60,000

N O 12 Enable a fully equipped ambulance for the Rioverde, Putumayo and Tiwino in the Amazon basin. When someone suffers a heart attack, poisoning or a serious injury, the outcome mainly depends on the rescue services getting there on time and on how well they are equipped. Until now people have had to organise themselves and sometimes help reaches them too late or they have no access to medical emergency services at all. Your donation will enable the Swiss Red Cross to buy an ambulance and fully equip the rescue services. With your support, you reach 20,000 people in rural villages and you will save lives. Thank you for your donation! Value: CHF 60,000

N O 13 Empower a health brigade in the Amazon. All year round four health brigades are out and about visiting those living in remote villages in the Amazon basin. Each brigade consists of a doctor, a nurse, a midwife and a dentist. Without this important service, these people would have no access to medical care. The Swiss Red Cross equips these brigades to make sure that even the people living in the most remote regions of Ecuador get the medical care they need. Every year the brigades treat about 10,000 people. In addition to the medical care, they also run educational campaigns. They teach the villagers about good health, nutrition, pregnancy, prevention, domestic violence, and hygiene. Your contribution ensures that these brigades can continue their work. Your donation of CHF 15,000 will help 2,500 children, women and elderly people. You will help diagnose illnesses in good time and save human lives. Thank you for your donation! Value: CHF 15,000

Rudin studied at Zurich “New Academy of Zurich” of Fine Arts and chose Dr. h.c. Walter Oskar Grob as his Master. Throughout the 80s and into the 90s, Rudin explored the possibilities that abstraction and minimalism had to offer to his paintings. N O 39 Marc Ricourt. 11 Lime Tree S16, 2016. Lime Tree, 41 x 39 dia cm. Unique. Ricourt sources the material for his organic wood objects from the bucolic surroundings in which he lives, translating nature into sculpture. He initially turns local wood on the lathe, intricately carves and then treats the surfaces, through bleaching, dying or an application of ferrous oxide, to create beautifully complex and idiosyncratic works of art. Ricourt intuitively creates a perfect harmony between wood, shape, texture and colour. The artist initially draws inspiration from the historicity of the utilitarian object, the vessel form: "I have based my work around a simple but very essential object, as it was the first tool created and used by mankind… Useful, yet mysterious, the closed vessel symbolically holds all mysteries and secrets of the human soul. My work on vessels has allowed me to develop a relationship between ancient or geographically remote cultures and civilisations and modern creations. The most important facet of my work is the research and exploration of new forms, colours, textures and finishes." Ricourt works and lives near Dijon, France. He is an established artist who has exhibited internationally. He is part of the collection of The French Museum of Woodturning and the Arizona University State Museum. His work has been noted in numerous publications. Value: CHF 6,800

VICTIMS OF FORGOTTEN DISASTERS CAMPAIGN
61
Every day countless people cope with crises and disasters. Not those that hit our headlines. But the silent disasters that are no less significant for those affected by them. For example, children drinking water from a contaminated river. Because they have no other choice: there is no clean drinking water. A woman dies during childbirth as a result of lack of medical care in her region. Families suffer from malaria since no one has ever told them how to use a mosquito net or that stagnant water can be dangerous. These are crises and disasters that barely attract any attention elsewhere in the world. They happen so far away and are not in the media spotlight. But it's our job and responsibility to look out for these people and help them.
The Swiss Red Cross works for those in the poorest regions of the world and stays there for as long as help is needed. In 31 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. We help with medical treatment or with campaigns that explain the connection between clean water, hygiene, and diseases. We support with preparedness for the next natural disaster. Assist setting up a professional blood transfusion service and give guidance with activities for elderly people who want to stay mobile. We do not forget these people.
We remain committed for as long as help is needed.
C LEAN WATER FOR A HEALTHY LIFE – USE OF
PROCEEDS 2016

Water and hygiene are an inseparable pair. The one is a requirement for the other, and together they are a prerequisite for good health and development. The Swiss Red Cross works in rural regions and densely populated urban neighbourhoods. In 2017, SRC programmes enabled 355,000 people in 14 countries to have better access to drinking water and sanitation. For example in Nepal, where major success was achieved in the Dank District, in the mid-west, thanks to the proceeds of more than CHF 830,000 from the Swiss Red Cross Gala 2016 in St. Moritz. The families in the mid-west region of Nepal live in isolated regions, at altitudes of up to 4,500 metres. Clean drinking water is in short supply up in the mountains. Women walk several hours every day to fetch water, up at the crack of dawn, trudging along steep, dangerous paths. Girls do not have time to go to school. The vicious circle of arduous work and poverty is repeated generation after generation. Thanks to the generous donations during the live auction at the 2016 Swiss Red Cross Gala in St. Moritz, the Swiss Red Cross was able to build three water towers and provide three villages, Hekuli, Dhanauri and Shivashakti, with drinking water. The water towers have a capacity of between 50,000 and 100,000 litres and supply clean drinking water by pipe directly to the households in the communities. 1,500 households,
Water to drink, to cook, to wash your hands right in front of the door or at school: This is a huge relief, especially for the women and girls, who no longer have to walk several hours every day to fetch water.
7,500 people, now have access to clean drinking water. This is a huge relief, especially for the women and girls, who no longer have to walk several hours every day to fetch water. Now the girls have more time for their homework and can keep up better at school. Clean water is a drastic improvement in the quality of life. The children and their families are sick less often because whatever clean water they have is used for drinking, personal hygiene, cleaning, toilets and to water their small kitchen gardens. The local men pitched in to help build the water towers. The builders needed labourers. To connect the water tower to the tap at the front door, trenches needed to be dug, plumbing laid and pipes welded together. A committee elected by the village takes responsibility for maintaining and using the drinking water systems. This reduces the cost and ensures that the users take better care of their facilities. Water and hygiene in 33 schools In addition to improving the water supply, the Swiss Red Cross builds sanitary facilities to enhance hygiene and teaches people about the connection between good hygiene and
avoiding disease. In these regions everyday illnesses such as diarrhoea and respiratory diseases can quickly become fatal. Especially for small children and the elderly. According to a UNICEF study, just 24% of households in rural communities have a toilet and only a quarter of the population wash their hands after going to the toilet and before eating. Only people with sufficient water can make a habit of washing their hands. Thanks to the proceeds from the 2016 Swiss Red Cross Gala in St. Moritz, the pupils, teachers and staff of 33 public schools in the poorest neighbourhoods of Nepalgunj, a town on the border between Nepal and India, now enjoy clean drinking water. But that's not the only improvement. Latrines and washing facilities in schools not only enable children to attend school regularly, they also learn a practical lesson about hygiene and how important it is to wash their hands. An important side-effect is that thanks to their new knowledge, the children also influence the behaviour of their parents and siblings. With rigorous hygiene, epidemics can be avoided. This has been made possible thanks to the proceeds from the St. Moritz Gala. Thank you again for your generous support.
