Welcome to Barker College 2024. I extend a very warm welcome to all our new families joining our community. We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which Barker rests, both here at Hornsby, at Yarramalong, Wollombi, Gunyangara and at the Grange in the Blue Mountains. We extend our respect to elders past, present and emerging as we seek to join our spirit with theirs to create a more reconciled Australia. At its best, the Barker education is an experiential one. We seek a balanced, all-rounded view of the world, one where the heart and the mind and the spirit are nurtured to grow together to enable a fully formed human life that is capable of thriving.
Barker is a thriving and busy place. This Communications Handbook provides an overview of how we communicate with our community and will assist you in navigating your way. High performing schools depend on frequent, transparent and coherent structures of communication in a fast paced and thriving setting. God made us to live and work in community. On behalf of the Council of Barker College I most warmly welcome all families who have joined the Barker community in 2024. The Council works collaboratively with the Head and the School’s Executive in all key domains in the life of the School including community satisfaction and engagement. You will find the School a place of great energy, where everyone but particularly students, can be engaged, enlightened, and encouraged. This School understands the importance of being relevant and innovative, while at the same time being confident in the strength of Barker’s stories and traditions developed under God’s Grace over successive generations.
Know that the Barker community is a place where all are valued and where all may thrive. I liken it to a village, characterised by the versatility of its members and by its vitality and its vibrancy. And it is always so refreshing to embrace a new group into the Barker village.

From the Community Liaison Coordinator
I am delighted to welcome all new families and students to Barker in 2024. As a current parent and a member of the People & Culture team, I am well aware that as a new parent/guardian there is always a lot of information to absorb when your child commences a new school. One of the comments I regularly hear is what a warm, welcoming and inclusive community Barker has and that has always been my experience both as a parent and a member of staff. As Community Liaison Coordinator, my role serves to support the Barker Community to facilitate the connection between families and the School through community focused events throughout the year. This Communications Handbook is just one of the ways the School provides information that will assist families to understand how the School operates and the regular communication channels that are used.

Communication between the School and Families We appreciate that there is a lot of information to take in when you first start at Barker College. The following pages provide a quick overview of where you can access information, get involved and contact staff at the School.
Notification of Absence from School Junior School (Pre-K - Year 6) If an absence is known in advance, eg for a medical appointment, or for the second or subsequent days of illness, please advise the School ahead of time by email to: JSAbsent@barker.nsw.edu.au If an absence becomes apparent on the morning please email JSAbsent@barker.nsw.edu.au by 8.25am. OR if your child needs to leave School early, or will arrive late, an email should be sent to JSAbsent@barker.nsw.edu.au outlining the times your child will arrive/depart. Late Arrival/Early Departures (Junior School) Students arriving late, or departing early, must sign in/sign out with: Mrs Julie Opie, Junior School Receptionist and Administrative Assistant. All Other Absences (Junior School) Requests for leave of absence from School for any length of time, be it for medical, personal reasons or extra leave for family holidays should be made, in advance, to the Head of Junior School, Mr Martin Lubrano. Requests for additional leave for holidays must be made by completing the Application for Leave form, which can be found in myBarker and attaching any relevant travel documentation. The completed form should be emailed to HOJS@barker.nsw.edu.au Late Arrival/Early Departures (Secondary School Years 7 - 12) If an absence is known in advance, eg for a medical appointment, or for the second or subsequent days of illness, please advise the School ahead of time by email to: absent@barker.nsw.edu.au If an absence becomes apparent on the morning please email absent@barker.nsw.edu.au by 9.30am. Parents/Guardians will receive an SMS message from the School by 11am if you have not advised that your child will be absent. If your child needs to leave School early, or will arrive late, an email should be sent to absent@barker.nsw.edu.au and outline the times your child will arrive/depart.

If students arrive late (after 8.30am but before 10am) they should sign in at either of the Student Services offices. After 10am, Middle School (Years 7 - 9) students must sign in via the PA to the Middle School, Mrs Julie McAndrew. Middle School students signing out before 3.20pm, must also sign out with Mrs McAndrew. The Middle School office is located opposite Bowman Field. Similarly, Senior School students (Years 10 - 12) must sign in or out via the PA to the Senior School, Mrs Sari Rae. The Senior School office is located in the Senior School Hub.

Requests for additional leave for holidays must be made by completing the Application for Leave form, which can be found in myBarker and attaching any relevant travel documentation.
Website The Barker College website www.barker.college provides a great deal of information about the School. Links to myBarker can be accessed from the home page of the website. Term dates for the current year and following year can also be accessed from the Quick Link tab.

Sport at Barker Sports Fixtures Sport is compulsory at Barker for all students from Years 3 - 12 with many sporting activities available. Each week, students look forward to competing as part of a team against other Schools. Final fixtures are published up to three days prior to the Saturday fixture. It is important to check if there have been any fixtures cancelled, prior to departing for your child’s game. Please note for some sports, fixtures may take place on a weekday. In the Junior School, training takes place during School hours.
Accessing Your Child's Fixture Please download the myBarker app or visit my.barker.college. Select the Student Profile for your child. Your child's Timetable will indicate their team, training day and time, along with the time and venue of their weekend fixture. The Location information will hyperlink to a map of the venue. The Co-curricular Activities tab will provide the email contact for the Sport Co-ordinator. If a weekly training session or weekend fixture is cancelled, the fixture will be crossed out and if you have the myBarker app installed on your device, you will receive a notification.
Draft Fixtures As there are more than 200 fixtures to coordinate every week, it is not always possible to finalise draws in advance. The School endeavours to provide a draft fixture in advance which is available on the Sports Hub in myBarker. If you wish to make arrangements for a family event, the Sport Office can be contacted to advise the likely time and venue for a future fixture.

Sport Absence Students are expected to be available for all trainings and games except in extenuating circumstances. Holidays, family birthdays, medical appointments etc should be planned around a student’s sporting commitment to their team. If a student is unable to attend their sporting commitment, weekly training or is requesting a sport absence in advance of the fixture, please email the following as soon as possible to advise. Further information about reporting short term or long term injuries is available in the Sport Handbooks available on myBarker in the Sports Hub.
Sport Absence Junior School Absence from Sporting Fixture (Advance notice) If known in advance that a student will be absent on game day, please note the following. Permission for an exemption from a Saturday fixture should be made to the Head of Junior School via email at least a week in advance of the requested exemption at HOJS@barker.nsw.edu.au Absence from Sporting Fixture (On Day of the Fixture) If a student unexpectedly falls sick on the night before or on the day of a sporting fixture, then email JSSport@barker.nsw.edu.au Please provide name of student, team, sport played and details relevant to the absence.
Sport Absence Secondary School Absence from Sporting Fixture (On Day of the Fixture) Year 7 - 12 Sport Co-ordinators: Contact details for all Co-ordinators can be found on the Sports Hub in myBarker and under the Co-curricular tab on your child's student profile. Absence from Sporting Fixture (Advance notice) To apply for a sporting absence in advance of the fixture please email Director of Sport Operations (Years 7 - 12), DirectorSportsOperations@barker.nsw.edu.au
Grading for Teams in Secondary School Students compete in both a Summer (Terms 4 and 1) and a Winter (Terms 2 and 3) sport. Trials are conducted in the weeks leading up to the start of a new season and teams are selected from these trials. There will always be movement up and down between the student teams for the first few weeks of any new season. Don't be too concerned about some movement. Swimming and Athletics/Cross Country Students may participate in the Swimming and Athletics/Cross Country programs all year round. Swimming competition season is primarily Term 1 and Term 4, Athletics/Cross Country competition season is primarily Term 2 and 3.
Sports Report A report from the weekend's round of sports fixtures for the entire school, along with all results, is published each week and available in the Sports Hub. Communications Directory I 11
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) myBarker myBarker is the School Portal where you can access information including the School calendar, student timetables, reports and receive notifications about forms to complete. Detailed information about the School can be accessed under Discover More or use the search function to quickly find the information you are looking for. The myBarker App can be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple Store. To improve the security of our parents’ School accounts, Barker College is enabling MFA (Multi-factor authentication). The implementation of MFA for parents will remove the requirement to continually sign into myBarker, which improves the user experience for all parents using Barker digital systems. 1. Login to my.barker.college using your Barker Portal parent credentials. If you have forgotten
your username please visit https://password.barker.college. Forgotten passwords can also be reset by following the prompts. 2. Take a Tour – Use the Take a Tour feature in the left hand navigation for a quick overview of
the features on myBarker.
Select the school calendars you wish to view e.g. Prep, Primary, Middle or Senior, along with School Dates.

3. To Do List and My Messages - See the list of
your tasks still to do and also completed. My Messages allows you to see the messages you have received and to create a new message to communicate with your child's Head of House, Dean or Head of School in the Secondary School.
4. Left Hand Navigation menu – allows you to navigate to My Apps
which include Subscriptions and Magazines, Research Resources, as well as quick links to Flexischools, Tuckshop volunteers and the Bulletin and Junior School News. Links to the Sports Hub, Community Directory, Canvas, School TV and the Barker website can also be accessed from here. 5. Discover More – Here you will find content categorised by Community,
Junior, Middle and Senior School. Use the search bar at the top of your page to access information quickly. The notifications icon indicates the number of new notices that you have received. Please view and Mark as Read once completed. The ‘Star’ icon next to the notifications bell can be used to favourite regularly visited pages.

teachers, co-curricular activities, academic report and academic dashboard. Click on the respective tab to select.

7. Co-curricular Activities – this tab
displays your child’s particular cocurricular activities with links to additional information, upcoming events for that activity and a contact email. Select the relevant day that your child will be playing sport and double click on the event. The pop up will show the team your child is playing in, time and location, including a hyperlink Google map.

ICT Support The service arm of the Barker College ICT Department is known as iCentral and is open Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 5.30pm during school term time and from 8am to 4pm on Saturdays and during school holidays. iCentral is only closed for public holidays and from Christmas Eve to the start of the first full working week in January. iCentral is located on level 2 in the Secondary School Library and can also be contacted via phone on (02) 8438 7775 or via email at icentral@barker.nsw.edu.au
CANVAS Canvas is our online classroom for Years 3 - 12. It is a central location that connects students with every aspect of their learning. On Canvas, students can: • engage with online content and learning resources • keep track of ongoing progress • view homework and assessment tasks • submit work and view feedback • participate in discussions • collaborate with their peers • communicate with their teacher Canvas is supported by BL@Barker, a blended learning program that provides students with an empowering environment that enriches face-to-face teaching with online learning opportunities.
Seesaw Seesaw is a digital learning platform and Learning Management System for Pre-K to 2 students at Barker. It provides families with an immediate and personalised window into their child’s School life. Students are able to independently document their learning with built-in creative tools, whilst being taught important Digital Citizenship skills.

Communications The Barker Bulletin and Junior School News A weekly bulletin, which keeps students, parents and guardians informed of the vision of the School, upcoming events, the weekly message from the Head of Barker College, Head of Junior School and of the day-to-day activities of the School from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12, is published each Friday and is available on myBarker. The Barker Bulletin also contains important information and announcements for students, parents and guardians, and includes details about subject access and support, Barker Institute events, Careers Corner, co-curricular activities and Music rehearsal times. Parents/guardians with the myBarker app will receive a notification as soon as these publications are issued on a Friday.
The Barker A quarterly magazine is published for the Barker Community containing news and information about the activities of students and staff, the Old Barker Association (OBA), the Barker College Parents' Association (BCPA) and the Barker Foundation. You can elect to receive the magazine electronically by emailing community@barker.nsw.edu.au or it is available for viewing on the Barker website.

The Year in Review The Year in Review features the highlights of the School year. The yearbook is distributed at Celebration (held in early December each year) and an online version can be accessed at www.barker.college

Diary All students at the School are issued with a School Diary. The Diary provides a valuable means of communication between the home and the School. Parents and guardians of Junior and Middle School students are asked to check this Diary regularly.
Parent/Teacher Interviews These interviews are held for each year group once a year in the Secondary School and twice a year in the Junior School. Parents and guardians are advised via email on the timing of these interviews and will be required to book their interview times online via the link that will be provided in the email.

School Reports Reports are sent to parents and guardians from Year 1 to 12 each year. Progressive Reporting Checkpoints are also released throughout Semester 1 and Semester 2 and provide timely feedback to parents and guardians on how their child is progressing in each subject area.
Student Dashboard The student dashboard for parents can be accessed through myBarker. The dashboard is a visual representation of data showing academic achievement and effort over the course of the year and for the duration of a student’s time at Barker. Parents will find course data reported on a semesterly basis and approaches to learning on a termly basis. Further information about the data and some tips on understanding the meaning of the data can be found in myBarker.
SchoolTV Barker subscribes to SchoolTV, a digital wellbeing platform featuring Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. This online resource is designed to empower parents with credible, sound information and with realistic, practical strategies. Each month, new articles and helpful advice are provided for parents on a range of topics from sleep to body image, surviving Year 12, school transitions and social media use. Chaplaincy at Barker Barker's Chaplains are available to meet with students and their families to discuss personal issues that may arise from time to time. Pastoral matters are also addressed in Chapel services, in the classroom and during Christian studies lessons. Barker's Leader Youth Workers also provide pastoral support for individual students during lunchtime activities such as Cru (Crusaders) Group. They offer a listening ear, words of encouragement and a Christian perspective to students. Students and parents are welcome to contact the School Chaplain. Flexischools The tuckshops at Barker are primarily cashless, therefore we encourage families to link their child’s Student ID card to a Flexischools account with a daily amount of money that can be spent in the tuckshops. Students from Years 2 - 6 can purchase from the tuckshop. Students are encouraged to use their Student ID Card from Year 5 to make purchases and to allow greater independence. Communication Charter for Parents/Guardians The Christian heritage of Barker is the inspiration for our values and purpose. We are a School that, through these values, encourages all members of our community to thrive and we aim to create an environment that ensures connectedness, a sense of belonging, engagement and positive, respectful relationships. This Community Charter has been developed to outline the responsibilities of all parents, grandparents, carers, and other visitors to the School to ensure our learning environment is collaborative, supportive, cohesive and aligns to the Barker College values.
The Role of the School Barker College is committed to working together in partnership with parents and families to create a positive environment for students, staff and the wider school community. The School is responsible for establishing and administering policies, procedures and rules which govern the operations of the School and at all times, we prioritise the wellbeing of our students and staff.
Communication and Interaction There are scheduled parent-teacher meetings (between staff and parents) throughout the year where the student’s progress can be discussed. There may be other times when a parent or a staff member requests a meeting to discuss particular issues that may arise. These communications will usually be coordinated via class teacher (Junior School) or the Head of House (Middle and Senior School). • Parents should avoid contacting a staff member on their mobile number, unless the staff member has requested this, and has the express permission of the Head. Our staff will always find time to respond to any parent’s questions or concerns regarding their son or daughter. It is important that parents and carers understand that while our staff are in class, or dealing with other matters, they may not be available to answer your emails or respond to your phone calls immediately. The School does not expect our teaching staff to respond to emails after 6.30pm or before 7am during week days, or at all over weekends (the expected response time for email communication is within 48 hours). Communications, whether verbal or in writing with members of the School community, including teachers, administration staff, other parents or students should show respect and courtesy, not be confrontational and not use immoderate language. Should there be an occasion when this protocol has not been appropriately followed, please have a discussion with your son or daughter’s class teacher (Junior School) or Head of House (Middle and Senior School).

Social Media It is important that parents show respect for staff and not publicly criticise them or seek to undermine their authority. • It is never appropriate to discuss or raise issues regarding other Barker children on online forums. The School relies on a relationship of cooperation between us and we want all our students to have the safe enjoyment of their School. • It is expected that social media will be used for the purposes of building community and contributing to a positive dynamic amongst parents and families. • Parents should respect the privacy of other students and not post photos or videos of any students, other than their own, on their personal social media platforms. • Social media should not be used to criticise or denigrate the School, the School leadership, staff, parents, students, or others in the School community. Expectations around the use of social media aligns with the School’s Social Media Policy. • Social Media should be respectful in terms of how we respond to posts, comments and images. • Using Social Media in a way that is contrary to this outline may result in an invitation for parents and/or guardians to attend the School for a meeting with the Head of Barker College.
Sport Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend sporting events. Students are selected for teams based on merit and the most appropriate selection at the relevant time. From time to time, students are moved to a different team, based on performance and team composition (please respect the decisions of the Sports coaches). • It is expected that at all times, parents and carers encourage students to give their best effort and applaud good play • It is not acceptable for parents to abuse, threaten or criticise a match official • Please respect the decisions of the Sports Coaches • In the event of a student injury or illness in sport, please report to the Barker coach or staff member present • Follow any directions regarding medical referral advice, including our concussion referral and recovery pathways for Return to Learn and Return to Play rules If a parent has a concern about a sports game, coach or member of staff, they can raise this with the Director of Sport - Operations - DirectorSportsOperations@barker.nsw.edu.au
Vehicle Use on School Access Roads and Car Parking For the absolute safety of our students and staff, it is essential that parents adhere to the speed limit of 10km/h when driving within the School grounds and in the car parks. Please ensure that there is no speeding, overtaking or parking illegally. Please ensure all behaviour is courteous at all times and always choose safety over convenience.

Confidentiality The School values the contribution of parents with respect to volunteering. The School maintains its discretion in approving or declining volunteers and at all times will be a decision maker in relation to the conditions of volunteering. When parents volunteer in certain roles, such as in the Junior School classroom or tuckshops, the safety and wellbeing of students is our shared priority. If your volunteering is in a child-facing role you will need a Working with Children Check before commencing in your role and you will be provided with our Code of Conduct. As a parent volunteer you may come across confidential information regarding another student. It is important that information remains confidential and is not discussed with other parents. It is recommended that this is reported to the class teacher.
Carer or Guardian These Communication Guidelines apply to carers and guardians in the same way they apply to parents.
Failure to Observe these Communication Guidelines Children have a right to learn in a safe and supportive learning environment and our staff to be treated respectfully in their place of work. Unacceptable and offensive behaviour has no place in our School. To ensure the wellbeing of students, staff and the community, steps will be taken to address unacceptable behaviour. This may include limited access to staff, sporting events, School events or the School premises. In more serious cases, unacceptable behaviour may impact the enrolment of the student/s.

Volunteering at Barker Volunteers are an important part of our School community. They share their skills and time, generously helping others. They foster links in our School and local community. Whether it is helping on one of the Saturday BBQs or volunteering to assist in one of the School’s tuckshops, we warmly welcome the assistance of our parents and guardians. The School simply could not function without our many volunteers. Their support is greatly appreciated. To volunteer at one of the School’s tuckshops, please follow the link to: Become a Parent Volunteer at Tuckshop Throughout the year, our Individual Learning Centre seeks the support of volunteer readers and scribes to support students, particularly during exam periods. Training and direction is provided by the Individual Learning Centre team. If you are able to assist please contact our Individual Learning Centre team. The School warmly invites those who are able, to assist the children of Darkinjung Barker and Ngarralingayil Barker, our schools for Indigenous children located at Yarramalong on the Central Coast and Wollombi, respectively. Please Note: It is a mandatory requirement at Barker that all volunteers hold a current Working with Children Check Clearance (WWCC). This can be completed at: www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au and then sent to community@barker.nsw.edu.au.

Barker College Parents' Association Barker’s main parent body is the Barker College Parents' Association (BCPA). Through teamwork and dedication the BCPA aims to foster friendship and fundraising by hosting events for parents and guardians and building the extended Barker community. The School draws enormous benefit from the committed support of the BCPA. The BCPA works closely with the School to ensure an inclusive community, which is working together for the benefit of future generations. The School is always so grateful for the wonderful work our volunteers do. Signing up for a day that works for you is easy and is done by registering through signup genius.

Name Badges To recognise members of the Barker community, all parents and guardians are requested to wear their name badge issued by the School whilst on the campus. This includes attending Saturday sport, meetings with staff and parent/ teacher evenings. If you lose your name badge, please complete the form to order a replacement.
The Council of Barker College The Council has overall responsibility for determining School Policy and for the financial management of the School's resources. The Council reports annually to the Sydney Anglican Diocesan Synod.

The Barker College Foundation The Foundation plays an important role within the Barker community by bringing people together in support of the School, its students and families. The role of the Foundation is to work with the School to ensure the fabric of Barker stays strong now and into the future. The Foundation firmly believes that fostering a culture of giving in the Barker community is fundamental to making Barker the vibrant and dynamic community our students engage in and are inspired by each day. To develop innovative learning programs, provide scholarships to those who could not ordinarily afford a Barker education, maximise and enhance the skills of our staff, create new facilities; tuition fees alone will never meet all these needs so we rely on your support as a member of our School Community.

The Old Barker Association The alumni of Barker College has a long history of contributing to the development and growth of the School. For some, this has led to a lifelong association, a deep respect for the School and a willingness to devote their time and energy in the endeavour of making the School an exciting and rewarding experience for those fortunate to attend. In recent years the OBA has: • Presented OBA training shirts to all Year 7 students • Sent Barker Lion Cubs to the newborns of our Barker Alumni • Held class reunions, regional community events and international events • Organised Alumni Parent Breakfasts, Alumni Networking Events and supported the Year 11 Career Mentoring Program

Community Groups Friends of Barker Music Friends of Barker Music (FOBM) is the music parents' and guardians' support group that was established in 2002. FOBM supports the students and staff in a number of music activities throughout the year and helps initiate fundraising activities that support the costs of international touring. FOBM members assist with catering at School concerts, publicising Barker Music events to the wider community, music library cataloguing, as well as providing an avenue for the buying and selling of instruments. Parents and guardians wishing to be a part of the group are always welcome. Contact: fobminfo@gmail.com
Sport Supporter Groups In the late 1990s, supporter groups were established for parents and guardians of students playing Cricket, Basketball, Rugby and Football (Soccer), providing off-field social activities as well as raising funds to provide coaching aids, sponsorship for sporting tours, and funding coaching clinics. Club members provide barbeques at home games and organise season launches and end of season functions.
