Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to The Hive London for this National League match against AFC Fylde. I would like to extend that welcome to Dave Challinor, his staff, officials and supporters. Last week at Leyton Orient, I wasn’t disappointed with the performance. For an hour of the game, we were better than good, we did ever so well. We conceded a goal that I don’t think we should concede. The work we do and how we do it shouldn’t result in us conceding a goal like their second. The way we play, how we set up - that should never happen. We lacked concentration, but you can get that with young players. Not even necessarily young players, but inexperienced ones. Once we had conceded, elements of that inexperience showed. We needed to dig our heels in and stay in the game, not try to get straight back into it. That was the disappointing thing, but the performance wasn’t disappointing.

We had put a decent little run together but Leyton Orient showed their strength in the squad that they had and, unfortunately for us, we have a lot of injuries right now. It was just one game too many, but there is nothing to say that we can’t start another run, starting today.

AFC Fylde are side whose ambitions are clear. They’ve got a lot of attacking threat with their main man Danny Rowe up top. He can score a goal out of seemingly nothing, we’ve got to make sure that defensively we are organised.

The boys were disappointed after Saturday but they haven’t dwelled on it, the spirit has been good within the squad and changing room this week. Training has been good and they’re looking forward to getting on the pitch and putting it right.

If we are on top of our game, we can cause them problems as well. Come on you Bees!

The club was formed by the amalgamation of Kirkham Town FC and Wesham FC in 1988. By taking this name, the club was adopting the name of a previous club which had played in the West Lancashire League in the years immediately before the First World War.

As the nominated representatives of the Lancashire County Football Association (Lancashire FA), the club have been winners of the Northern Counties Cup in 2004–05, 2005–06, and 2006–07.

Kirkham & Wesham played their first season in the West Lancashire League in 1988–89, taking the place previously held by Kirkham Town in Division One. The following season they finished bottom of this division and were relegated to Division Two. After three seasons in Division Two they were promoted in the 1992–93 season, only to again suffer relegation in 1994–95. They were immediately promoted again, finishing as runners-up and only losing two games all season in 1995–96. The West Lancashire League was re-structured with the First Division being renamed as the Premier Division in the 1998–99 season. After finishing fourth in successive season in the 1997–98 and 1998–99 seasons, the club then dominated the Premier Division for a number of years. They were Champions in seven out of eight seasons between the 1999–2000 and 2006–07 seasons, finishing as runners-up in the one season they failed to win the league, 2002–03. Between January 2003 and October 2004, the club did not lose one match in any competition, a record that spanned 21 months. The run finally ended when they lost a league match, 1–0 to Dalton United In April 2006 the club completed a hat-trick of consecutive victories in the Lancashire Amateur Shield cup final when they beat fellow West Lancashire League side Charnock Richard 2–0 at the Lancashire FA ground in 11

Following their West Lancashire League championship success in 2006–07, the club were accepted into the North West Counties League for the 2007–08 season. The club’s first match in the North West Counties League was a home match on 11 August 2007, against Darwen in front of 101 fans, which they won 5–0. The following Tuesday they played their first ever home match under floodlights winning 2–0 at home to Holker Old boys.was set when Southall visited York Road in the quarter-final. During the Second World War, the club competed in the Great Western Combination. In 1945 the club were founder members of the Corinthian League. After many seasons of relative mediocrity, fortunes changed under the guidance of ex-Brentford forward, Len Townsend, and then former Slough Town manager Jimmy Price, and the Magpies enjoyed the first real “purplepatch” in their history. In seven seasons between 1956 and 1963 the club won the league three times, were runners-up twice and also reached the third round of the FA Amateur Cup in 1960, losing to West Auckland at York Road in front of a post-war record attendance for a Maidenhead game of 5,597. As well as County Cup, County Benevolent Cup and League Memorial Shield successes during this period, the 1st round proper of the FA Cup was reached in 1960 (losing 5-0 away to Colchester United), 1962 (losing 3-0 at home to Wycombe Wanderers) and 1963 (losing 2-0 to Bath City at York Road).

Manager Mick Fuller won the leagues manager of the month award for December 2007 following four successive wins during the month. On 26 January 2008 the club reached the last sixteen of the FA Vase, in their first season in the competition, when they beat Studley 3–0. On 9 February they reached the Quarter-finals of the FA Vase after they beat Sussex County league leaders, Crowborough Athletic 2–0 in front of a record crowd of 772 at Crowborough’s Alderbrook Recreation Ground. On 11 February they were drawn at home in the Quarter Final to Midland Football Alliance club, Coventry Sphinx on 1 March. The match ended in a 3–3 draw after extra time and Kirkham & Wesham won the replay 1–0 on 9 March in Coventry with a goal from Sean Paterson. In the twolegged semi-final against Eastern Counties League Premier Division club, Needham Market the team won 4–2 on aggregate.

On 24 April, the club won the Division Two knockout trophy with a 1–0 win over Bootle, and two days later secured one of the two automatic promotion places in North West Counties Division One when they beat Castleton Gabriels 3–1. On 11 May, they won the FA Vase beating Lowestoft Town 2–1 in the final at Wembley Stadium in front of a total crowd of 19,537, with about 14,000 from Lowestoft and about 3,500 Kirkham & Wesham supporters. A goal down for most of the game, Kirkham & Wesham scored twice in the last six minutes, both goals coming from seventeenyear-old substitute Matt Walwyn, son of former Blackpool player, Keith Walwyn, who only played the last 11 minutes of the game. They were promoted to the Premier Division.

Long serving manager Mick Fuller was moved upstairs in September 2010 and Kelham O’Hanlon was brought in as first team coach. The club finished in mid-table with a high turnover of playing staff and the side at the end of their first season in the Northern Premier League Division One North was barely recognisable compared with the one that started the campaign. The following season the club achieved a play-off place. In the semi-final Matt Walwyn scored in a 1–0 win over Skelmersdale United but the team lost 2–1 to Chorley in the final.

2011/12

In the 2011–12 season they were installed as early promotion favourites but Kelham O’Hanlon was replaced as manager in November 2011 after a poor run of results and was quickly replaced by a new management team of Dave Challinor and Colin Woodthorpe. Challinor left Conference North side Colwyn Bay to drop two divisions to join the Coasters, pointing to the club’s ambition and plans for the future as the factor that made them move to the Fylde Coast. They were 16 points oﬀ the top of the table when they came to the club but claimed the title with a 1–0 win over Salford City. Challinor won several awards including Manager of the Year at the NPL Awards Dinner.

In 2012–13, the club managed to achieve a playoff position in their maiden season in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. They lost out 3–1 on penalties to eventual playoff final winners Hednesford Town F.C. in the semi-final, which ended 3–3 after extra time at Keys Park, Hednesford. The game was notable for a 60-yard goal scored from a free-kick by Coasters goalkeeper Ben Hinchcliffe.

The 2013–14 season was extremely successful for Fylde, as they won the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy, the Northern Premier League Challenge Cup, and gained promotion to the Conference North via the playoﬀs.

The Coasters signed Tom Hannigan, Liam Tomsett & Danny Rowe in preparation for their ﬁrst season in the Conference North and defender Josh Langley stayed on at the club after joining late the previous season.

They beat Chorley F.C. 4–1 at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton to win the Lancs FA Trophy, Skelmersdale United 1–0 at Edgeley Park, Stockport to win the NPL Challenge Cup, Worksop Town 3–1 at home in the playoff semi-final, and then required penalties to beat Ashton United at home in the playoff final, with the game finishing 1–1 after extra time. Goalkeeper Ben Hinchcliffe scored the deciding penalty to end a tense game and send the Coasters up to the Conference North

AFC Fylde finished their first season in the Conference North in second place with 85 points, losing to Guiseley in the subsequent play-off semi-final. Their top scorer was Danny Rowe with 31 goals, with Richie Allen and Danny Lloyd both scoring at least 20 goals in all competitions. Josh Langley won both Player’s Player of the Year award and Supporters Player of the Year award, while Dion Charles took Young Achiever of the Year award. Tom Hannigan took Manager’s Player of the Year in what was widely regarded as a successful season for the club, having only been promoted to this division the previous season. Three AFC Fylde players were selected in the Conference North Team of the Season at end of season AGM awards. Ben Hinchcliffe, Josh Langley and Brad Barnes were all picked by the fellow clubs within the league.

Fylde enjoyed a successful campaign, once again reaching the FA Cup first round and putting in a fine display in a narrow 3-1 defeat at League One giants Millwall, before ultimately losing in the play-off final against North Ferriby United. The Coasters also reached the last 16 of the FA Trophy.

In 2016/17 AFC Fylde moved into their new ground at Mill Farm as well as establishing a Ladies Team throughout the season they scored an incredible 109 goals and secured 88 points which was more than enough to win the National League North title and promotion to the National League for the ﬁrst time in the clubs history. The clubs striker Danny Rowe created history scoring a record 47 league goals.

The Coasters first season in the fifth tier of English football brought unprecedented success with Dave Challinors side qualifying for the second round of the FA Cup. The opponents were Wigan Atheltic, the first leg ended 1-1 at Mill Farm before losing the televised replay 3-2. Success followed in the league as AFC Fylde finished the season in 7th, their highest ever league position. They qualified for the expanded playoffs, however, they were beaten 2–1 by Boreham Wood in the qualifying round.

Long-serving players Joe Booth and Michael Barnes moved on before pre-season started along with Michael Potts, Luke Denson and Dave Hankin also leaving the club. The signings of centre-half Dominic Collins from Southport and striker Matty Hughes from Fleetwood show serious intentions for the club in the upcoming season as both players had played in higher divisions than the Conference North the previous season.

The 24-year old began his career at Premier League side West Bromwich Albion before moving to Yorkshire outfit Barnsley. A loan move from the Tykes to Stalybridge following before Tunnicliffe moved back to Birmingham to join Kidderminster.

Lynch started his career at Manchester United before joining Bolton Wanderers, he progressed through the age groups and made the bench for three Premier League games in 2011/12. The goalkeeper was then released in 2014 and signed for Accrington Stanley on non-contract terms. He then signed for Salford City in September 2016/17 but left the club to join AFC Fylde at the end of the season. He initially struggled to break into the first team but as the season progressed he cemented his place as Fylde’s first choice keeper keeping 14 clean sheets in 37 games, form which was noticed by his peers as he was selected for the Player’s Player of the Year award. He was also been rewarded with the number 1 shirt heading into the 2018/19 season.

Tunnicliffe was widely regarded as one of the best defenders during the 2016/17 National League North season. He played a major role in pushing Fylde all the way in the promotion race, making 44 appearances in the league for Kidderminster, before succumbing in the playoffs to Chorley. He was voted the club’s Player of the Season at Kidderminster. During the 17/18 season, Tunnicliffe was an integral part of the team’s success and featured in 47 games including the FA Cup 2nd Round tie vs Wigan Athletic. Jordan Tunnicliffe became Fylde’s first signing of the 2017/18

Byrne spent his youth career at Nottingham Forest before joining League One Rochdale in 2012.

Burke started his career at Wigan Athletic ages 12. He progressed through the age groups, captaining the Under 18s to the Fifth Round of the FA Youth Cup. He was named the U18s Player of The Season before signing his first professional contract in July 2016, which was quickly extended until the summer of 2018.

During his time at The Dale, he joined Football Conference side Barrow on a one-month loan deal. He then joined AFC Telford United in June 2013 after being released by Rochdale and in 2014 he won promotion to the Conference Premier.

AFC Fylde secured a loan move of full-back on the final day of the 2017/18 summer transfer window. The 20-year-old initially joined up with Dave Challinor’s side until the end of January, however, the deal was extended until the end of the season. After impressing AFC Fylde made the move permanent in May 2018.

In 2015 Byrne joined Macclesfield Town and helped them reach the FA Trophy Final in the 2016/17. Following his successful season, Byrne agreed to join Gateshead on 26 May 2017 on a one-year deal. The 25-year-old former Republic of Ireland youth international swapped Gateshead for the Fylde Coast in May 2018, penning a two-year deal with the club.

Birch started his career at Everton Academy aged just 11, he then became a firstyear scholar in the summer of 2013 and often featured in the Under-18s’ title-winning campaign. International honours arrived at youth level, with Birch representing England Under-16s and England Under18s. In September 2015 Birch joined Burnley as part of their Development Team, despite training with the first team and making various squads’ things didn’t work out.

Croasdale, 23, began his career with Championship side Preston North End, before moving to Sheffield Wednesday. Things didn’t work out at Hillsborough and he switched to Kidderminster, captaining the side as they reached the playoffs for a second consecutive season. This summer the Coasters smashed all their previous transfer records when they agreed to pay Kidderminster £50,000 for the England C skipper.

Now 21, AFC Fylde signed the right-back in August on a contract until the end of the season.

Brewitt signed for AFC Fylde in September 2018. The defender started his career with Liverpool aged ten and progressed through the ranks to make his debut for the U18s. In 2017/18 Brewitt left the Reds to join Middlesbrough on a free transfer and was released at the end of last season. He has also represented England at U17 level.

The experienced attackingmidfielder started his career at his hometown club Oldham Athletic before signing a four-year contract with Chelsea in 2007. During this time, he spent time out on loan at Oxford United and Sheffield United before signing for the Blades in 2011. Things didn’t work out and he soon moved to Coventry City before returning to his childhood side Oldham. Playing over 100 games from 2013-16 he then joined Blackpool for an undisclosed fee. He was released in the summer and joined the Coasters on a two-year deal.

Experienced midfielder Andy Bond signed for Fylde in June 2016 having spent part of the last season at Lancashire rivals Chorley Town.

Cardle grew up in Lytham St Anne’s and is the older brother of the professional boxer and former British Lightweight Champion Scott Cardle. He started his professional career with Port Vale before moving to Scotland where he has lived for the past 10 years playing for Airdrie United, Dunfermline Athletic, Raith Rovers and Ross County.

Former England C international Bond has plenty of Football League experience having made over 100 league appearances for Colchester United. A versatile player, Bond can play in defence or in his preferred position as a central midfielder. Bond signed a new one-year deal with the club this season and has been named the clubs Vice-Captain.

Jim Kellermann joined AFC Fylde on Friday 17th August on a season-long loan. Born in Hendon, Kellermann spent his early career with Kidderminster Lions and Stourport Swifts before signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers at the age of 14. Following his release from Wolves he signed for Aldershot Town. He spent two successful years with the Shots reaching the playoffs in both campaigns. In may 2018 he signed a two-year contract with Scottish club St Mirren. He made his debut for St Mirren on 13 July 2018 in the Scottish League Cup.

James Hardy joined AFC Fylde in October 2015 from Manchester City on a free transfer. Hardy’s ability was immediately evident providing a string of goals and assists. In October 2016 hardy received his first call-up to the England C side. Hardy was awarded AFC Fylde Young Player of the Year Award at the end of the 2016/17 season. In the 2017/18 season, Hardy only made 18 starts but still showed his quality scoring 4 goals from midfield.

Youngster Serhat Tasdemir signed professional terms with the Coasters in September 2017 after becoming the club’s youngest-ever league goal scorer during the 2-2 draw against Bromley.

27-year-old Attacking winger Ashley Hemmings started his professional career with Wolverhampton Wanderers before moving around the leagues playing for the likes of Plymouth Argyle, Walsall and Mansfield Town. Hemmings signed for Salford City on 29th May 2018, without playing a game he soon joined AFC Fylde on 24th July on a two-year deal.

The attacking midfielder put pen to paper on a two-year deal, with the option of a third. Affectionately nicknamed ‘Tugay’ by his teammates after his famous footballing namesake, the forward graduated through the Coasters’ Academy following his release from Blackburn Rovers. 18-year-old Serhat Tasdemir was named Young Player of the Year 2017/18 by manager Dave Challinor for a brilliant breakthrough season.

Local lad Danny Rowe joined Fylde in August 2014. In his debut season at the club, Rowe scored an impressive 35 goals in all competitions as the Coasters narrowly missed out on promotion losing in the Play-Off semi-finals to Guiseley.

The 24-year-old 6ft 2 Frenchman joins on a short-term deal with the option to extend after impressing whilst on trial.

In the 2015/16 campaign, Rowe was Fylde’s top scorer once again with 31 goals. He was also tied with Dayle Southwell of Boston United on 24 goals for the Golden Boot as Fylde agonisingly lost in the playoff final to North Ferriby United.

Toure has enjoyed most of his career in his homeland. He moved to Viry Châtillon in 2013/14 season where he began to attract the attention of Premier League scouts. He impressed and in 2014/15 he went on trial with West Bromwich Albion.

At the third time of asking, however, there was no denying Rowe and Fylde as they stormed to the National League North title. Rowe’s incredible tally of 48 goals in all competitions including 47 in the league helped him gain individual recognition by being named the National League North Player of the Season. To top off that spectacular season, Rowe signed a new two-year deal with Fylde in July 2017 keeping him at the club until 2019.

Last season the centre-forward returned to England and enjoyed a pre-season with Wrexham but eventually signed for Macclesfield Town, he was then released in January and joined the Coasters at the end of July.

The goals haven’t stopped as last season Rowe scored 24 goals in all competitions including 2 goals over 2 legs in the FA Cup Second Round vs Wigan Athletic. 21

DAVE CHALLINOR MANAGER

David Paul Challinor is an English former footballer who is the manager of National League club AFC Fylde. He played in the Football League as a professional from 1994 until 2008 with Tranmere Rovers, Stockport County and Bury. The central defender, who has played for Tranmere Rovers and Stockport County, previously held the world record for the longest throw in football. This was 152 feet (46.34 meters) in a special challenge set-up at Prenton Park in 1998, beating the previous record held by Cardiff City’s Andy Legg. When at Tranmere, he played in the 2000 Football League Cup Final. He was transferred to Stockport County for a fee of £120,000 in January 2002. Whilst playing for Stockport County against Grimsby Town, Challinor’s tackle on striker Martin Pringle broke the leg of Pringle in two places, and effectively ended his career. Though Challinor only received a yellow card, Carlton Palmer, Stockport’s playermanager, fined Challinor two weeks’ wages and called the tackle “horrendous”. Challinor joined Bury on loan for three months in January 2004., the move was made permanent during the summer. After spending four seasons at Bury as captain, he was forced to retire from professional football in May 2008 due to a knee injury. In October 2008, Challinor joined Colwyn Bay in the Northern Premier League Division One North, he captained the side to the play-offs in his first season where they lost out to Newcastle Blue Star on penalties. The following season the team, again captained by Challinor reached the play-offs and this time were promoted thanks to a 1–0 victory at Lancaster City in the final. Challinor was appointed as player-manager at Northern Premier League Premier Division club Colwyn Bay on 28 May 2010. He was assisted by former teammate Colin Woodthorpe. During their first season in management, they led Colwyn Bay to runners-up in the Northern Premier League Premier Division and a place in the play-offs. Victories over North Ferriby United and FC United of Manchester secured the club promotion to the Conference North. The club also won the North Wales Coast Cup, with victory over Flint Town United in the final on penalties. The club won the Fair Play Award for least amount of disciplinary points through the season and Challinor was named manager of the month for March, April and May 2011. On 2 November 2011 it was announced that Challinor had been appointed the new manager of AFC Fylde, in the Northern Premier League Division One North. He guided AFC Fylde to the NPL First Division North championship in the season of his arrival and as a consequence was named Evo-Stik NPL Manager of the Year 2011–12. In 2012–13 AFC Fylde once again qualified for the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division play offs but were defeated on penalties by Hednesford Town who took their place in the Conference North. AFC Fylde did qualify for the FA Cup First Round proper, eventually being defeated by Accrington Stanley and also were victorious in the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy at The Reebok Stadium, Bolton. 2013–14 has seen a remarkable season for AFC Fylde with them not only gaining promotion to the National League North after defeating Ashton United in the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division play offs. They also retained their Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy with a thumping 4–1 victory over rivals Chorley. They also won the Doodson Sport League Cup with victory at Edgeley Park over Skelmersdale United. Not only were they successful but their immaculate disciplinary record meant they won the Fair Play Award for the Premier Division and their overall record throughout the three leagues came out on top which saw them claim the Presidents Cup. Finally this year, AFC Fylde once again had the best technical area marks for the Evo-Stik league to match last years statistic. An unbelievable year which has seen AFC Fylde move to their highest rung of the pyramid and personally a fourth promotion in five years for Challinor. In 2016–17 Challinor clinched promotion as National League North champions, with a 3–0 victory over Boston United on 22 April 2017. In June 2017, he signed a new two-year contract with the club.

2006/07 Kirkham & Wesham won the West Lancashire League Premier Division title for the seventh time in eight seasons in 2006/07. The new Kellamergh Park ground was oﬃcially opened in August 2006. Kirkham & Wesham won 22 of their 30 West Lancashire League games and gained 72 points, ﬁnishing 15 ahead of runners-up Haslingden St Mary’s. They remained unbeaten in away matches and lost only twice in the West Lancashire League, at home to Charnock Richard and Freckleton, conceding just 19 goals. As the nominated representatives of the Lancashire FA, they also won the Northern Counties Cup for the third successive year.

2007/08 Kirkham & Wesham won the FA Vase at the first attempt in 2007/08. Mick Fuller’s side defeated Worsbrough Bridge 3-0, Brodsworth MW 4-3, Parkgate 5-0, West Auckland Town 3-0, Newcastle Benfield 5-2, Studley 3-0, Crowborough Athletic 2-0, Coventry Sphinx 1-0 and Needham Market 4-2 en route to the final. Two late goals from teenage substitute Matt Walwyn secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Lowestoft Town watched by 19,537 at Wembley Stadium. Kirkham & Wesham began life in the North West Counties League First Division with a 5-0 win at home to Darwen and secured promotion as runners-up when they defeated Castleton Gabriels 3-1.

2008/09 The newly-named AFC Fylde won the North West Counties League Premier Division title at the first attempt in 2008/09. The Coasters won 33 of their 42 North West Counties League games and scored 122 goals, slamming six past Abbey Hey, Ashton Athletic and Runcorn Linnets as well as five past Formby, New Mills and Winsford United. Mick Fuller’s side remained unbeaten at home and gained a record 104 points, pipping New Mills to the title on goal difference as they won promotion to the First Division (North) of the Northern Premier League. AFC Fylde lost their grip on the FA Vase after losing 2-1 at home to Needham Market in a fourth round replay.

2010/11 AFC Fylde reached the Northern Premier League First Division (North) play-off final in 2010/11. The Coasters won 24 of their 44 Northern Premier League games, finishing in fifth place with 81 points. Kelham O’Hanlon’s side gained 5-2 wins over Harrogate Railway Athletic, Ossett Albion and Radcliffe Borough, also slamming four goals past Durham City, Lancaster City, Leigh Genesis, Trafford, Wakefield and Witton Albion. But after narrowly beating Skelmersdale United 1–0 in the Northern Premier League First Division (North) play-off semi-final, AFC Fylde lost 2–0 to local rivals Chorley in the play-off final watched by 2,950 at Victory Park.

2011/12 AFC Fylde stormed to the Northern Premier League First Division (North) title in 2011/12. Ex-Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper Kelham O'Hanlon was dismissed as manager in November 2011 after a poor run of results and replaced by Dave Challinor. The Coasters were 16 points oﬀ the top when he arrived at the club but quickly surged up the table. They trounced Harrogate Railway Athletic 7-0, Clitheroe 6-2 and Ossett Town 5-0, clinching the title with a 1–0 win over Salford City at Kellamergh Park. AFC Fylde won 31 of their 42 Northern Premier League games and gained 99 points, ﬁnishing seven ahead of runners-up Curzon Ashton.

2012/13 AFC Fylde qualified for the Northern Premier League Premier Division play-offs in 2012/13. The Coasters lost only two of their opening 14 Northern Premier League games and reached the FA Cup first round proper, losing 4-1 to Accrington Stanley in front of 1,213 at Kellamergh Park. They won 4-0 against Kendal Town and Marine in consecutive matches over Christmas, then slammed five goals against Blyth Spartans and Eastwood Town. Michael Barnes, Adam Farrell and James Dean scored 45 goals between them as AFC Fylde qualified for the play-offs in fifth position. They lost 3-1 on penalties to Hednesford Town after a 3-3 draw in the semi-final.

2013/14 AFC Fylde won promotion to the Conference North in 2013/14. The Coasters lost just one of their opening 13 matches, hammering Worksop 6-1 and Droylsden 5-0 in consecutive games. Brad Barnes scored five goals in their 10-0 win in the return match at Droylsden and Dave Challinor’s side dropped only six points in a 17 match unbeaten run. Matt Blinkhorn was top scorer with 17 goals as they qualified for the Northern Premier League Premier Division play-offs in fifth place. AFC Fylde beat Worksop 3-1 in the semi-finals, then Ashton 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the final. They also won the League Cup and Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy.

2014/15 AFC Fylde finished Conference North runners-up in 2014/15. Dave Challinor’s side began with a 4-0 win over Brackley but gained just one point from their next three games before surging to the top with nine straight wins. The Coasters also reached the FA Cup first round proper, losing 2-0 at Plymouth Argyle, then regained pole position with eight successive wins. AFC Fylde finished two points behind champions Barrow despite losing just once in their final 14 games. They lost 3-1 on aggregate to Guiseley in the play-off semi-final. Trio Ben Hinchcliffe, Josh Langley and Brad Barnes were selected for the Conference North ‘Team of the Season’.

2015/16 AFC Fylde reached the Conference North play-off final in 2015/16. The Coasters started with a 3-0 defeat at eventual champions Solihull Moors but lost just one of their next 14 Conference North games including a 5-0 win over Stalybridge Celtic. Dave Challinor’s side also reached the FA Cup first round proper, losing 3-1 at Millwall. They won 22 of their 42 Conference North games and qualified for the play-offs in third place with 75 points. Sam Finley’s spectacular ‘Goal of the Season’ clinched AFC Fylde’s 2-1 aggregate win over Harrogate Town in the play-off semi-final but the Coasters lost 2-1 to North Ferriby United after extra-time in the final.

2016/17 AFC Fylde won the Conference North title in 2016/17. Dave Challinor’s side won 11 times in a 15 match unbeaten start. The run ended with a 1-0 defeat at Tamworth but they bounced back with a 5-0 victory over Stalybridge, then hammered Boston United 9-2. The Coasters’ solitary home defeat was 2-0 against Chorley watched by a record 3,858 crowd on Boxing Day. They crashed to a 5-0 defeat at Salford in early February but lost just one of their ﬁnal 14 games, with Danny Rowe breaking the club goalscoring record with his winner at Halifax. AFC Fylde scored 109 goals as they gained 88 points, ﬁnishing six ahead of runners-up Kidderminster.

OUR SEASON SO FAR BY DANIELE ACCURSO

Usually in the matchday programme you would expect to see my “A Foot in Both Camps” piece, where I look back on some players who have played for both Barnet and the opposition. Unfortunately today there will be no such piece. After several hours of research, I was not able to stumble upon any player who played for both us and AFC Fylde. For those with an even greater footballing knowledge, you may know of such a rare creature so please do get in touch if you know of any who have. Thus for today, I will be summing up the season Barnet have had to date. After a summer of numerous comings and goings (12 arrivals and 17 departures) plus the addition of dynamic duo John Still and Darren Currie, the new management got off off to a rocky start in pre-season, seeing their side score only once against higher calibre opposition, and even then it was through to an own-goal. John Still made light work of the situation, arguing that the pre-season was just to get back fitness rather than grinding out results.

An opening day draw against Aldershot away in the basking sun left myself and many others fairly content; Harrison and Coulthirst both missing good chances could have seen the Bees easily come away with three points against a side who were in the play-offs last season. Another draw followed, this time against newly promoted Braintree Town. Barnet’s unbeaten start was soon to end against a visiting Eastleigh side who, after beating us, earned their first victory of the season. That first loss was compounded by further defeats to high flying Harrogate Town and Ebbsfleet United. Two points from 5, with a side who had only scored twice, Still and Currie had a 29

lot of work to do. Up next for us was a visit to Martin Allen’s Chesterfield.

Just like an 80s detective show, the duo of Still and Currie were searching hard for answers and it soon came in the form of the 3-5-2. Initially deploying a 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 formation, the 68-year-old manager showed why he is the best in the business, being bold and changing formation after just 5 matches. Against a Chesterfield side under the tutelage of Allen, Barnet’s very own Jack Taylor struck a 90th minute rocket past Callum Burton to give Barnet their first win of the league season.

And just like London buses, once that first win came, more immediately followed. Barnet recorded victories against Dover, Bromley, Dagenham & Redbridge and Maidenhead United which saw the Bees jump up to 9th spot, just outside the BARNETFC.COM

play-offs on goal difference. What was interesting during this winning streak was the number of academy players and academy graduates on show; during our 1-0 win over Maidenhead, 16-year-old Martyn Box was given a debut whilst fellow 16-year-old Aymen Azaze was an unused sub. At the full-time whistle, seven academy products were on the pitch; Elliot Johnson, Wesley Fonguck, Jack Taylor, Martyn Box, Ephron Mason-Clark, Joe Payne and Nana Kyei. So a congratulations is in order to all those who have helped our youngsters progress down the years: Rossi Eames, Henry Newman, Dean Selvey and Dan Senda. Barnet have though had another misery period of injuries: Dave Tarpey, Simeon Akinola, Mauro Vilhete, Andre Boucaud and Captain Callum Reynolds have all not featured yet this season but our young stars have shown themselves in a good light during this tough spell. Mason-Clark won a penalty versus Maidenhead, both Taylor and Fonguck have scored screamers whilst Joe Payne has done well at centre-back when called upon. Other youngsters such as Josh Walker and Jack Barham, who joined us in the summer, have contributed with goals this season too. The future looks bright for Barnet and with such talent coming through, we should expect to continue rising up the table as players adjust to the rough and tumble nature of the fifth-tier.

Already I resigned myself that the visit of Fylde would be problematic. 1988 saw the amalgamation of Kirkham Town and Wesham, the new club adopting a name used prior to the First World War. Barnet have never played any of these sides before today, so let us first consider that Sesame Street is brought to you by the letter K.

Fylde Finale

Kettering, Kidderminster, Kings Lynn. Three of the four sides beginning with the letter K which Barnet have played over the years. Kettering have had more than their fair share of problems since I visited Rockingham Road, initially as a neutral, then with Barnet. Steve Percy is probably screaming â&#x20AC;&#x153;what about Kingsbury Townâ&#x20AC;? at this stage, and indeed 1992 saw the Bees travel to that side in the London Senior Cup. We won 4-1, although I did not make the journey. Saw Town play a couple of times, before they merged with the London Tigers, and attended a couple of functions at the bar. The complicated history of teams in the area means the ground is now shared by the Phoenix club Edgware Town, and the formally nomadic Hendon. Silver Jubilee Park now boasts a 3G surface, making the ground share that much easier.

Last weekend AFC Fylde comfortably disposed of Aldershot Town 3-0, climbing the table and making up for the slight disappointment of being held 0-0 by local rivals Salford City. I hope that local derby passed more peacefully than the goalless draw I witnessed between Llantwit Major and Penybont. I will never get that ninety minutes of my life back, so I actually left early, content that neither side would score if they played on until midnight. Therefore I missed some unsavoury incident which the Llantwit website referred to, emphasising their proud tradition as a family club, and appealing for witnesses. The Landbedr Fawr ultras had been perfectly well behaved, so I remain perplexed as to the incident which was being referred to. Today I am sure things will be a lot calmer as I visit the new ground of Pontardawe Town, assuming our Rhian has not been at the prosecco.

Non-League News I am sure that John Still will be happy that the American goalie Tim Howard is part of a consortium that has invested in Dagenham and Redbridge. Elsewhere the ongoing farce at Billericay continues with the manager changing on a seemingly weekly basis, and despite rumours, Ian Hendon is not the new guy in charge. Mr Tamplin may or may not have put Billericay up for sale. Consider they were previously doing rather well.

Dan Sweeney’s first Barnet goal secures a fourth win on the bounce for the bees as they see out the game with 10-men. An early chance for Jack Taylor had to be saved by David Gregory before David Tutonda almost caught out the Bromley ‘keeper as his cross from the left wing almost sailed into the goal.

Before the break, Tutonda toyed with the Bromley defence, beating one man after several stepovers. He set up Wes Fonguck who was unfortunate to see his low effort strike the upright.

Cheye Alexander had an effort blocked after he cut inside from the right while at the other end, Craig Robson had to make a vital interception to cut out the danger created by Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe.

After the break, Barnet looked to extend their advantage, Barham having a shot deflected wide before Charlee Adams’ headed over Elliott Johnson’s corner.

With 13 minutes on the clock, Dan Sweeney surged at the Bromley goal before firing a low shot which Gregory managed to deal with. Two minutes later, David Tutonda was shown a yellow card after he went down under pressure in the penalty area, adjudged to have dived. The Bees took the lead in the 21st minute from a corner created by Jack Barham which looked like a lost cause. The corner routine looked straight from the training ground, the ball came out to Wes Fonguck who delivered to the far post where Robson knocked it back across for Sweeney to head home from 6-yards, his first goal in a Barnet shirt. Shortly before the half-hour mark, Jack Taylor’s header from Barham’s cross had to be dealt with before Bromley had their best chance of the game when Ogedi-Uzokwe was given just enough time and space to unleash a powerful effort from all of 35 yards. Cousins dived to his right and was grateful to see the ball cannon back off of his post. Sweeney, then Robson and then Alexander all threw their bodies into the path of three Bromley efforts at goal.

Taylor managed to find space at the far post from Tutonda’s cross but put his first-time effort wide of the target while at the other end, George Porter’s volley was saved by Cousins. On 62 minutes, Jack Barham hit a sensational volley at goal from the edge of the box, the ball struck the underside of the bar and despite the strikers’ appeals, the officials decided that the ball hadn’t crossed the line. Barham had another chance a few moments later, cutting back onto his right foot but curling it just over before Harrison played him through again but Gregory saved his effort at the near post. With 4 minutes of the 90 left to play, Barnet were reduced to 10 men. David Tutonda picked up his second booking of the match when he went in for a 50/50. Despite the man advantage, Bromley never really troubled Cousins and it would be Barnet who would see out the match, pick up all three points and secure their fourth win in succession.

The Bees made it five wins in a row with a tight 1-0 win at home to Maidenhead United. Barnet took the lead in just the fourth minute. Good determination was shown by Josh Walker before he curled the ball through a crowd of bodies into the bottom right corner for his first Barnet goal. Chances for both Charlee Adams and Wes Fonguck came and went in the opening 10 minutes as Barnet raced out of the blocks. Harold Odametey had an effort saved by Mark Cousins before Dan Sweeney played through Jack Taylor whose shot was deflected wide. Joe Payne, making his first start of the season, launches a long throw into the box, it was flicked on by Byron Harrison but it went just beyond Craig Robson at the far post. The game slowed down for the remainder of the first half, but that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t without further Bees chances. Sweeney found Elliott Johnson at the far post with a great cross from deep but his low header was saved. Harrison then split the Magpies defence with a ball to Taylor but he poked the ball wide.

After the break, Walker delivered the ball into Cheye Alexander but his effort was off target. Max Worsfold managed to get a shot away with his back to goal but Cousins was equal to it. In the 80th minute, Alexander ran the length of the pitch after being set free following a Cousins throw out, he found Walker but he shot wide. Barnet were awarded a penalty when Ephron Mason-Clark was tripped by Alan Massey. Harrison stepped up but it the top right corner of the woodwork and it went over. As the game entered stoppage time, the Bees were forced to bring on 16-year old Martyn Box for the stricken Payne. Box made a great run down the left wing soon after and superbly won a corner for his side. Barnet secured the win, their fifth on the bounce and will go into next weeks game at Leyton Orient full of confidence.

TAKING THE MIC

HEART OF GLASS I have always had a soft spot for the little guys, the romance of the underdogs and the unknown who emerges out of nowhere to step into folklore. Jimmy Glass is my favourite example. Many of you know the story of his day, but it is always worth repeating. Glass was an emergency loan signing by Carlisle late in the 1998-99 season; a goalkeeper unexpectedly pulled from the bench at Swindon Town to be cast into the Cumbrians’ dogfight with Scarborough to stay in the Football League. I saw him make his debut in Game No. 44, a 3-3 draw against Darlington. I remember that he did not play well. Another point at Hartlepool kept Carlisle alive and facing the prospect of a must-win finale against Plymouth while at the same time clinging to the hope that the Seadogs did not defeat Peterborough at the McCain Stadium. I headed to Yorkshire to witness what proved to be a drab 1-1 outcome there. But with reports that Carlisle were, first trailing, and then still only drawing 1-1 deep into injury time, when the final whistle went at Scarborough the crowd spilled onto the pitch in a joyous, celebratory mood. There was dancing, hugging, sheer relief. They were safe. I will never forget the moment that the news filtered through on the radio. At first it was vague. Something about a goalkeeper. Then it became clearer. The goalkeeper had scored from a corner with virtually the last kick of the game and changed everything. 41

It was surreal to witness the way the news spread across the ground, first in a stuttering, still unbelieving, manner, before spreading like wildfire. I have also never seen a crowd’s mood swing in such an extreme way. From delirious happiness to total desolation in what was a vocal – and almost visual - “wave”. It proved the pinnacle of Jimmy Glass’s playing career, his fifteen minutes of fame. He never played for Carlisle again, swiftly descended into non-league football and retired from the game at the age of 27. For Scarborough, meanwhile, there was no way back. Despite the immediate chants from their supporters that “We will be back,” they never remotely threatened to return to the Football League they had graced for twelve years - and eight seasons later they were gone altogether. The McCain Stadium followed suit four years later, and there is now a Lidl supermarket on the site. On such a few brief seconds can a club’s entire history turn. I had toyed with the idea of the long trek back to Brunton Park for the final game, before ultimately opting for the Yorkshire coast. In the end, I missed a truly memorable goal, but I learned just as much about human emotion and the impact of a club on a relatively small community.

MASCOTS Our last home match versus Maidenhead saw Jackson Lambert as our matchday mascot. Jackson got the chance to meet the manager and all the players pre-match where he had a signed shirt and plenty of autographs to go with honour of leading out the Bees for kick-off.

Today sees the fourth round of fixtures in this seasons’ edition of the FA Cup – the second qualifying round. Again, there are several of our local rivals in action. Wealdstone host Great Wakering Rovers, who are based near Southend and compete in the Isthmian League North Division. Hendon take on Phoenix Sports of Barnehurst, South London. Haringey Borough host Erith Town, St Albans City are at home to Whyteleafe, Hemel Hempstead Town go to Bowers and Pitsea and Hitchin Town take on Didcot Town, who defeated another local side in Wingate and Finchley in the previous round. Meanwhile Chesham United travel to Welling United, Bedford Town go to AFC Telford United, and AFC Hornchurch host East Grinstead Town. Other notable ties include Chester playing City of Liverpool FC of the North West Counties League Premier Division, Southport going to Farsley Celtic, York City vs Ashton Athletic, Darlington hosting Bradford Park Avenue, Altrincham entertaining Whitley Bay, Kidderminster Harriers playing Atherstone Town, Nuneaton Borough coming up against Brackley Town and Torquay United going to Lymington Town.

In the build-up to the FA Cup ties this week, Slough Town came up with a rather unconventional method of scouting new players for the club. The National League South club are due to host Wessex League Premier Division side Sholing today. The club only have one first team goalkeeper on their books, Jack Turner. However, Turner picked up an injury to his elbow towards the end of last weekends 4-2 victory away at Eastbourne Borough, making him doubtful for the side’s game today. Therefore, in an attempt to find a goalkeeper to either start the game or to be on the bench, dependant on Turner’s recovery, the Rebels manager Neil Baker took to social media outlet Twitter to try and find a new ‘keeper. On Tuesday, he posted to his personal account: “Strange way of doing this via Twitter however not getting what we need at present, but we are looking for a keeper as cover in the FA Cup for @sloughtownfc if interested PM me.” He received many responses to his post, some serious and some not so serious. Last season the side got to the second round proper, losing to Rochdale. “We’ve never had a second keeper, and if we have had a problem, we have normally gone and got somebody in on loan” said Baker. “However, when it comes to the FA Cup, it’s very difficult because keepers have already played in the competition or teams higher up the pyramid don’t want to loan a keeper out”.

Gary Johnson, the new manager of Torquay United, says that he has given his players more freedom, but has warned that he is not afraid to make changes to the side. “I leave players to bring out the footballer in them. I don’t say you’ve got to go long or you’ve got to go short” said Johnson, who made a winning start to his career with the Gulls, leaving Hungerford with a 2-0 victory last weekend. “If you’re good enough and you understand what I’m looking for from you, you’ll play for us. If you don’t then no problem, you’ll find your level and it might be somewhere else”. The former Cambridge United, Yeovil Town and Cheltenham Town manager was appointed last week, just two days before the Hungerford match, to replace sacked Gary Owers. 44

After he announced his retirement from football this week due to being diagnosed with motor neurone disease, Bolton Wanderers manager Phil Parkinson has described player Stephen Darby as a “fighter” and a “top-quality person”. The 29-year-old had played under Parkinson at Bolton as well as at Bradford City. “It’s hurt us all and our thoughts are with him and his family” said Parkinson. “It’s hard for anybody who gets this news, but I’ve been through a lot with Stephen over the years”. There is currently no cure for the disease, and it affects the persons’ nerves in their brain and spinal cord function. Darby started out his career at Liverpool, making 7 first team appearances and winning the FA Youth Cup in 2006 and 2007. He later played for Swindon Town, Notts County and Rochdale.

The Football League’s bottom side Notts County have this week made a double signing. The side are bottom of League 2 having picked up just two points all season under new boss Harry Kewell. Last week the side suffered a 5-1 away defeat at Exeter City, and the week before a 3-1 defeat to Forest Green Rovers at home. Cedric Evina and Jamie Turley both join the side after having both been free agents. Evina joins having last played for Doncaster Rovers, where he was loaned to Kewell’s last club Crawley Town. The 26-year-old defender, who is from Cameroon, has also turned out for the likes of Arsenal, Oldham Athletic and Charlton Athletic. Meanwhile, 28 year old defender Turley last played for Newport County, but spent much of last season on loan at Boreham Wood. He has also turned out for the likes of Salisbury City, Forest Green Rovers and Eastleigh, as well as having spent part of the summer on trial at Crawley under Kewell. It has not been revealed how long the contract for either player is.

Another club in the transfer market this week is Tranmere Rovers. Last seasons National League playoff winners have snapped up Ryan Williams, on a short-term deal that runs up until January. “He has experience in the EFL which will add to the squad”, said Rovers manager Micky Mellon. Starting out his career at Chester City, the 27-year-old then had a spell in Wales, playing for the likes of Colwyn Bay (who play in England), Llandudno and Rhyl. The midfielder then returned to England to play for Morecambe, where he played over 60 times, and then Brentford, before moving to Scotland with Inverness Caledonian Thistle. A moved to Canada to play for Ottawa Fury (who play in the USA) then for Paysandu in Brazil.

Former Barnet fans favourite Graham Stack has left Eastleigh. Having made 134 appearances for the Bees before leaving in the summer of 2016, he joined the Spitfires towards the end of that year, with a spell at Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters in between, going on to make 52 appearances for the Hampshire side. The goalkeeper, now 36, is set to take up the role of head goalkeeper coach at Premier League side Watford. In his career, he started out at Arsenal, making 5 first team games, all in the League Cup, playing at the same time as the “invincible” side (although he did not actually play a league match, but was on the bench many times). He also won the 2000 FA Youth Cup with the Gunners. Spells at Beveren in Belgium, Millwall, Reading, Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Plymouth Argyle and Blackpool followed before a spell in the Scottish Premier League with Hibernian. At Eastleigh he shared his playing duties with being a goalkeeper coach.

David Bloomfield, former Barnet Programme Editor and iFollow co-commentator recalls the late ALAN HALL… Alan Hall died recently. Alan was a passionate follower of the Bees, both home and away. I first became aware of Alan back in the days of Underhill. He sat immediately behind the Press Box with his wife Ann and a regular band of fellow season-ticket holders. His opinion on all football matters was frequently sought by this group with his sage observations and pronouncements regarded as the final word. It could be a historical matter that he was asked to clear up or his view on what we had just seen on the pitch. His word was law. He didn’t clamber to get his voice heard, it was just that his wisdom was sought by others. Being one of those that watch Barnet home and away really does give you a great insight into how a season is panning out and when I was sitting on the team bus it was a regular sight to see Alan and Ann overtake us on our travels to grounds up and down the country. Although it would be difficult to come across a keener supporter than Alan he wasn’t blind to the faults of the 46

players. I thought that sometimes his catchphrase was “Shocking” which he often uttered when he witnessed something that exasperated him. I got to know Alan better when he became a contributor for the programme, the “hard-copy years” as we might now call them. He would find historical and interesting links between that day’s opponents and would unearth items from his attic to illustrate the piece. The copy for “Only Connect” was too good for a single page and I soon gave him a “double-page spread”. Alan’s writing was in my opinion always well-researched and always made for interesting reading. His regular feature was cited for special praise when the programme won the “Best Read” award in League 2. Importantly, and as a signifier of the man, if he said that I would receive his copy at a certain time, it ALWAYS duly arrived. Ian Warner, the proof-reader back in those days, and I would scrutinise his copy very closely, just in case an error was spotted; and just the one time we did. Alan was duly ribbed and I told him it was truly a Shocking” error!
