WRITES
Good evening and a very warm welcome to The Hive London for this National League fixture against Havant & Waterlooville. I would like to extend that welcome to Lee Bradbury, his staff, officials and supporters. Saturday was a tough game against a good side. I thought it was reasonably even although they were on top towards the end if I’m being honest. I thought we did enough in the first half to be in front. It was a good, strong performance following on from the Leyton Orient game where we put in a similar performance, albeit we let ourselves down with their second goal which made us chase the game. It was a great response to that disappointment and I was very pleased with our player’s contribution. Looking at tonight’s opponents, I saw their game at home to Aldershot Town where they won and played well. We had them watched at Ebbsfleet United at the weekend, they drew and, having looked at the clips, defended ever so well. They broke out, counter attacked a couple of times and I thought they were unlucky not to get another goal. Doesn’t mean to say that I thought they should’ve won, but they were always in it. They also only got beat by the oddgoal to Sutton recently. Although I think that was the right result, they put in a good account for themselves.
6
One of the reasons we have looked at three of their games is because, in one of the games, their work rate was incredibly high. It makes you wonder, is that just a one-off but no, it was high throughout all of them. Every player for Havant does more than a full shift for the team so that has been highlighted for us and we have to match that before our ability will ever show itself, we expect it to be a tough game, we expect to be playing a hard-working team,
so I expect us to match those elements of their game.

Enjoy the game,

NOTES
Hello everyone and welcome back to The Hive London for this evenings game against Havant & Waterlooville! After the defeat at Orient the weekend before, it was good to get a point on the board on the back of that, it was important to avoid back to back defeats. It could be a good point come the end of the season against a side that has only tasted defeat once and are a well organised team. Hopefully, we can build on that tonight.
Tonight we take on Havant and Waterlooville, a team new to this division. I know their striker Nicke Kabamba well, he was on loan with me at Aldershot last season and he is a threat. They have got quite an experienced side, so it’s not going to be an easy game, far from it, as they showed when they got a result at Ebbsfleet on Saturday.
Get behind the boys right from the off and come on you Bees!

INTRODUCING HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE
Mill Local football can be traced as far back as 1883 in the Borough of Havant, when Havant FC was formed, playing in the Portsmouth Football League. In the 1950’s Bobby Tambling made the large jump from playing for Havant FC (youth team) to join Chelsea, followed by International recognition with England. On retirement Bobby returned to the Havant area opening a local sports shop. In 1969 Havant FC merged with local side Leigh Park United winning the Portsmouth Football League at their first attempt. This witnessed a boom time in the Club’s history as they joined the 4th Division of the Hampshire League. Between 1970-1977 the team progressed through to the 1st Division of the Hampshire League. This meant their home ground at Front Lawn would be unsuitable if the Club was to progress any further. The current home of Westleigh Park was acquired in 1980 and after two years of hard work and considerable cost opened in August 1982. The new club was rebranded Havant Town FC. 1986 saw Havant Town FC as founder members of the Wessex League. They finished runners up on three occasions before finally winning the title and moving into the Southern League in 1991.
Meanwhile Waterlooville Football Club, who were established in 1905, had become firm fixtures in the Southern League since 1971. They too had slowly progressed from humble beginnings moving through Waterlooville District, Portsmouth and Hampshire League Divisions. With the formation of the National Conference, the Southern League re-organised themselves. In 1981 the side from Jubilee Park nearly won the Championship but narrowly failed despite going 31 matches without defeat. Waterlooville then spent a lot of years proving too good for the Southern League but not quite up to the grade of the Premier one. 1993 witnessed an 11th place finish in the Premier, their highest ever placing. Relegation and rising costs meant that the Club struggled to remain competitive and the talk of a merger with their fierce rivals was first mooted. Havant Town FC had their own problems as well. In 1997 Club Manager Tony Mount had left unexpectedly, taking the core of his talented squad with him. June 1998 saw the two rivals join forces. Jubilee Park was sold and the newly renamed Havant & Waterlooville FC was created.
A NEW ERA BEGINS On the 22nd August 1998, the new look team beat Chelmsford City 2-0 to begin a new era in the Club’s history. The team duly won the Southern League Southern Division, earning promotion to the Premier Division at their first attempt. With success came more financial backing and £500K was spent to bring the ground up to Conference standard. The Club had now improved both their Stadium and fan-base as the local community flocked to see their local heroes in action. In 2004 the Club were part of the new restructuring of the Conference South. They have remained in the Division ever since. Season 2006-2007 witnessed the highest placing for the Club, earning a play-off spot. A hard fought Semi-final against Braintree Town ended with the Hawks remaining in the Division. 11

Season 2011-2012 witnessed excitement of a different kind as the Hawks escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth, an extra time 93rd minute goal was badly needed to ensure that Conference football remained at Westleigh Park. The last 16 years have seen the Club consolidate as an established member of the Blue Square South. With the game of football changing in the past few years, mainly due to financial matters being tightened up at all levels, the business side of all Clubs has become paramount. Fortunately the Club has been very prudent in this area and any money that has been made has been carefully re-invested in the Club as a whole; not just on the playing staff. The Club can now boast a public house, The Westleigh, situated next to the ground. The stadium still retains its Conference ‘A’ Standard and is often viewed jealously by visiting directors. The Club is working towards making the Club fully self funding with long-term security the ultimate aim. The philosphopy of the playing squad has changed over the past couple of seasons. Younger talent was sought out, backed up by some quality experienced Older heads to help establish growth of the squad year on year. 2005-2006 saw the Club Launch its Academy in conjunction with South Downs College. It is the Clubs impressive Cup exploits that has really captured both local and National attention as we have earned the un-official title of ‘Cup Specialists’.
THE CUP RUNS
01
2000-2001
03
2006-2007
Gave a taste of things to come for Hawks fans, when the team qualified for the first round proper of the F.A.Cup (gaining their first real national recognition). A vast crowd of 1118 turned up to witness a 1-2 loss to their Conference based rivals Southport.
2002-2003
02
Was the season that the Clubs pedigree as a cup side really started to get established with runs in both the FA Cup and the FA Trophy. This time in the FA Cup they had to travel to Dagenham & Redbridge where they fought bravely but lost 3-2. In the FA Trophy they really excelled themselves, getting as far as the Semi-Finals. A two legged affair that saw the Hawks go out 2-1 on aggregate to Tamworth.
Witnessed another dual attack on honours, with both the League and FA Cup providing major excitement. A first round draw against Millwall had the gloss taken off it a little when it was decided that the tie would have to be played at nearby Fratton Park. A huge crowd of 5793 turned out to see Millwall beat the Hawks 2-1. By the end of the season a play-off place had been won. Both legs of the play-off against Braintree finished 1-1 and the Hawks had the heartbreak of their season ending courtesy of a penalty shoot out.

If the previous Cup record had been impressive, this season the Club was to go on an adventure of truly epic proportions. The qualifying campaign saw off Bognor Regis Town, Fleet Town, and Leighton Town. The first round proper and the Hawks were drawn away to York City. This tie was to prove third time lucky as an unexpected 1-0 victory resulted in the Hawks in the hat for the 2nd round, for the first time in the Club's history. Another away draw beckoned, this time founder members of the Football League Notts County would be our hosts. They too were despatched 1-0 and the 3rd round allowed the possibility of a ‘major name’ to be our next opponents. Swansea City were pulled out of the hat, followed by the Hawks. The Hawks had to travel ‘abroad’ for their first match outside of England to face Roberto Martinez and his exciting Swans. A late Rocky Baptiste goal made the scoreline 1-1 meaning that the Welshmen had to make a midweek trip to Westleigh Park. Martinez famously described the Hawks as “a pub team” a remark that would vastly help the Hawks PR campaign at a later date. The home replay sparked unprecedented scenes in the build up when the winners of the tie were drawn to play the mighty Reds of Liverpool in the 4th round. Media from around the world appeared at the Stadium and Havant Town Centre as news of the potential “David v Goliath” clash was a distinct possibility. A colossal 4400 crowd packed into Westleigh Park and generated an atmosphere that will probably never be bettered again. The game exceeded anybody’s wildest dreams as the “pub team” ran out fully deserved winners 4-2 and the Welshmen left feeling sheepish. If the Swansea game had caught the public imagination the away tie at Anfield brought Havant & Waterlooville FC into a complete media frenzy. Club sponsors Carlsberg (who also sponsored Liverpool) pulled off a major PR coup. They marketed the Hawks as “Probably the best pub team in the world”. On the day of the match Havant Town was deserted as 6000 fans made the trip to Liverpool. The largest crowd the Hawks had ever played in front of, 42,566, witnessed a true classic. The minnows from the Conference South ran out with ‘Probably’ emblazoned across their chests instead on the customary ‘Carlsberg’ logo. The nation then collectively held their breath as the Hawks took a 1-0 lead against the former European Cup Winners. When the Reds drew level the writing appeared to be on the wall but amazingly on-loan Alfie Potter put the minnows 2-1 in front and the biggest cup shock in history was a distinct possibility. Liverpool drew level just before half-time and ended up 5-2 victors but the men from Havant & Waterlooville drew a standing ovation from all four corners of the ground, not to mention a decent financial injection after a fantastic cup campaign.

2010-2011

Once more the first round of the FA Cup was a reality, Brentford were chosen to play at Westleigh Park. The ‘live TV cameras’ were in attendance as were 1631 Hawks fans. This time the professional Club ran out convincing 3-1 winners and the media circus moved on. Two weeks after the FA Cup tie the Hawks embarked on a good run in the FA Trophy. A Quarter-Final draw saw the Hawks return to York City (whom they had beaten the previous season in the FA Cup). This time York took their revenge winning 2-0.
The Hawks made their now ‘customary’ appearance in the 1st round of the FA Cup and had a home tie against Droylsden of the Conference North Division. The side from Manchester proved first class both on and off the field of play and ran out 2-0 winners, for once the Hawks were the victims of a cup shock.

The first qualifying round of the FA Cup witnessed the Hawks limp out of the competition 1-0 at the hands of North Leigh (Oxford). A 3-0 home loss to Weston-Super-Mare in the BSS days later saw Hawks Manager Stuart Ritchie lose his job. A little less than a month later and new Hawks Manager Lee Bradbury lead his side to a Club Record 11-1 victory against United Services Portsmouth in the Hampshire Senior Cup.

A successful season which saw the club reach the play-offs in fifth place, losing to promotion-winners Boreham Wood 2-4 on aggregatein the Semi-Final. A decent FA Cup run culminated in a live televised First Round tie against Preston North End. Last 16 in the Trophy and victory in the Portsmouth Senior Cup saw silverware lifted for the first time in many seasons.
Spaniards were in town without a match. Within 24 hours the full first team were lined up at Westleigh Park with probably the best looking away support ever witnessed in our short history. The match was a complete lesson in how the game should be played and will live long in the memory. The season did finish on a high when a 93rd minute goal by Joe Dolan, against Staines, saved the Hawks from relegation.
09
2013-2014
Lee Bradbury had a season full of considerable promise as the Hawks campaign promised to be one to remember. After a superb FA Trophy campaign the Hawks went out at the Semi-Final stage to local rivals Gosport Borough. Then despite a multitude of fixture changes due to inclement weather and a good cup run the Hawks moved up the Conference South table from 15th to 6th, missing out on the play-offs on goal difference. The Hampshire Senior Cup also witnessed the Hawks finish as runners up after a 3-2 Extra-Time defeat by Basingstoke Town.
11
2015-2016
Hawks were relegated to the Ryman League for the first time in their history, on goal difference. However they won the Hampshire Senior Cup for the first time, beating Winchester City at St Marys Stadium, Southampton FC. We also had long runs in both FA Cup and FA Trophy, losing to the two clubs promoted to the Football League, Cheltenham Town and Grimsby Town respectively.
2016-2017
12
The club bounced back to win the Isthmian(Ryman) League Championship on the final day of an incredible season. Our final home fixture saw a 1-0 win against runners up Bognor Regis Town in front of an amazing 3455 crowd.
13 2017-2018
An incredible season saw the club complete the treble of National South, Hampshire Senior and Portsmouth Senior Cups. The League title was clinched in the 89th minute of the final fixture at home to Concord Rangers. Reached 4q in FA Cup and 1P in FA Trophy.

His evident skill made it look unlikely that the Hawks would secure his services beyond the end of the season, but having been offered contracts by both Bournemouth and the Hawks in May 2013, to the delight of fans he opted to stay at Westleigh Park. Since then he has become an integral member of the team and a firm fans favourite. Dan would be play an integral role in the Hawks gaining back to back promotions in 2017 & 2018. In the Ryman League winning campaign he was the relied upon piece of the jigsaw as the Hawks pipped Bognor to the post before having to endure the 2017/18 season on the sidelines for most part. However Dan scored a crucial winning goal late on in the season at Welling United to keep the Hawks on top of the table with 4 games to go.

Ed started his career at Queens Park Rangers and also played a part in AFC Wimbledon’s push for league status in 2010/11, playing 16 league games for the promotion winning side. After moving to Dover in 2011 he played 31 games for the side in all competitions between August and March 2012, but was one of eight players released from the Crabble three days after the end of the 2011/12 season. He then signed for the Hawks in July. 25 year old Ed quickly became a regular in defence and in his first three seasons has played and impressive 131 games in the heart of the defence. An injury has seen Ed sidelined for most of the 2015/2016 season. Harris returned to action in July 2016 when the Hawks faced Team Solent in a friendly. At the end of the 2004–05 season Bradbury was playing for Oxford United. Bradbury signed a four-month contract with Southend United on 31 January 2006. He subsequently signed a longer contract. In August 2007, Bradbury signed for Bournemouth on a four-month loan deal. After playing one game for the club the loan was made permanent, and Bradbury signed a contract until the end of the season. In the later stages of Bradbury’s career, he played in a much different role, being converted into a right back for Bournemouth during an injury crisis he became the first choice right back for the south coast club, but with the arrival of defender Stephen Purches, who returned after three seasons away from Bournemouth, Bradbury went back to his former role of striker whilst attacking options were limited. On 15 January 2011, Bradbury was appointed as caretaker manager after the departure of Eddie Howe to Burnley. The next day, he announced his retirement from playing, and on 28 January, was given a two-and-a-half-year deal as permanent manager of the club. In January 2012, Bradbury signed an improved three-and-a-half-year contract to manage the League One club, keeping him at Bournemouth until the summer of 2015. During his first season at the helm, Bradbury steered the Cherries into the League One Play-offs, eventually losing to Huddersfield on penalties. On 25 March, during his second season, Bradbury was dismissed from AFC Bournemouth following the club’s run of poor form.[6] Bradbury’s first match in charge of the Hawks came against Basingstoke on October 13th 2012. He started his tenure with a win, just the second of the season, which lifted the Hawks out of the relegation zone. With 31 games remaining at the point he took over, Lee took time to cut underperforming players while relying on a string of impressive loan signings from league sides to bolster the team and eventually finished the season with the Hawks top of the form table. In his second season in charge Lee continued to use the strategy of loaning players from league sides to add to his squad, and took the Hawks to the semi-final of the FA Trophy as well as the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup. The side also missed a playoff spot by just goal difference. Last season Lee took the Hawks one step further by reaching fifth spot in the table and a two legged playoff semifinal against Boreham Wood, who beat the Hawks 4-2 on aggregate and went on to achieve promotion. The Hawks also enjoyed excellent cup success again, reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup to face league opposition in Preston North End, and more locally the side also won the Portsmouth Senior Cup, beating Petersfield Town 4-2 in the final.

1998/99 Havant & Waterlooville won the Southern League Southern Division title in 1998/99. Newly-formed by the merger of Havant Town and Waterlooville, they dropped just two points in an eight match unbeaten start and were never out of the top two. Billy Gilbert’s side lost only six matches all season, equally divided between home and away, as they contested the leadership with Margate. The Hawks clinched the title with a 5-1 win at home to Andover with two matches remaining. They won 29 of their 42 games and gained 94 points, five ahead of Margate. Steve Tate was leading scorer with 32 goals, while skipper Simon Elley was ‘Player of the Year’.
2001/02 Havant & Waterlooville finished third in the Southern League Premier Division in 2001/02. The Hawks, managed by Mick Jenkins and Liam Daish, raced to the top with a 13 match unbeaten start, slamming five goals past Bath City and Hinckley United. They remained in pole position for six weeks but were overtaken by Crawley Town, eventually finishing behind champions Kettering Town and Tamworth. Leading marksman James Taylor, Jamie O’Rourke and captain Tim Hambley scored 60 goals between them as Havant & Waterlooville won 22 of their 42 games and gained 75 points. They were Hampshire Senior Cup finalists.

2002/03 Mick Jenkins and Liam Daish managed Havant & Waterlooville to the FA Trophy semi-finals in 2002/03. The Hawks defeated Billericay Town 2-1, Sutton United 3-1, Colwyn Bay 2-0, Hayes 3-0 and Forest Green Rovers 2-1 en route to the FA Trophy semi-finals for the first time, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Tamworth. They won 5-4 at Cambridge City and trounced Folkestone Invicta 6-2 in the space of four days in late April. James Taylor was highest scorer in the Southern League Premier Division with 22 goals as Havant & Waterlooville finished eighth, winning 15 of their 42 games and gaining 60 points. Midfielder Bobby Howe was ‘Player of the Year’.
2005/06 Havant & Waterlooville were unlucky not to qualify for the Conference South play-offs in 2005/06. The Hawks won 2-1 at home to champions Weymouth and stormed to a 6-2 victory at Eastleigh. They won 21 of their 42 Conference South games and finished in sixth place with 70 points. Ian Baird’s side missed on a place in the play-offs by a single point behind Histon because of a controversial three point deduction for breaking a gentleman’s agreement with Weymouth that Tony Taggart would not play against his former club. Havant & Waterlooville claimed that an injury crisis had forced them to field him in the home match against Weymouth.
2006/07 Havant & Waterlooville qualified for the Conference South play-offs in 2006/07. Ian Baird’s side won 20 of their 42 Conference South games, finishing in fourth place with 73 points. The Hawks scored a late equaliser in both legs as they drew 2-2 on aggregate with Braintree Town in the play-off semi-final but lost 4-2 on penalties after extratime. They defeated Team Bath, Carshalton Athletic and Brackley Town en route to the FA Cup first round proper, losing 2-1 to Millwall in a ‘home’ match watched by a club record 5,793 crowd at Fratton Park. It was the first time that Havant & Waterlooville had faced Football League opposition in a competitive match

2007/08 Havant & Waterlooville made headlines by reaching the FA Cup fourth round in 2007/08. Shaun Gale replaced Ian Baird as manager in October. Mo Harkin’s goal clinched a 1-0 first round victory at York City, then Tony Taggart’s strike gave Havant a 1-0 win at Notts County in the second round. Rocky Baptiste’s late equaliser gave the Hawks a 1-1 third round draw at Swansea and he scored again as they won 4-2 in the replay watched by 4,400 at West Leigh Park. The Hawks caused a sensation by leading twice at Liverpool in the fifth round, with Rocky Baptiste’s strike and Martin Skrtel’s own goal, before losing 3-2 in front of 42,566 at Anfield.
2013/14 Havant & Waterlooville reached the FA Trophy semi-finals in 2013/14. The Hawks beat Sutton United 2-1, Basingstoke 1-0, Whitehawk 3-1, Ebbsfleet 1-0 and Aldershot 4-1 en route to the FA Trophy semi-finals, losing 3-1 on aggregate to Gosport. As a result of the Trophy run as well as weather -related postponements, they were required to play over half of their Conference South campaign within the final 57 days of the season. Despite this the Hawks went into the final game of the season against Tonbridge with a chance of making the play-offs but missed out on goal difference. They also lost 3-2 to Basingstoke in the Hampshire Senior Cup final.
2014/15 Havant & Waterlooville qualified for the Conference South play-offs in 2014/15. The Hawks lost their opening three games but soared with eight wins in their next nine, storming to a 5-0 victory at Farnborough. Leading marksman Scott Donnelly and JJ Hooper scored 30 goals between them as Lee Bradbury’s side qualified for the play-offs in fifth position, winning 21 of their 40 Conference South games and gaining 70 points. Havant & Waterlooville lost 4-2 on aggregate to eventual winners Boreham Wood in the play-off semi-finals. The Hawks also reached the FA Cup first round proper, losing 3-0 to Preston NE watched by 2,382 at West Leigh Park.

2016/17 Lee Bradbury guided Havant & Waterlooville to the Isthmian League Premier Division title in 2016/17. The Hawks had been relegated the previous season but regained Conference South status at the first attempt in dramatic fashion. Trailing Bognor Regis by a point prior to the penultimate round of matches, they gained a crucial 1-0 victory over their title rivals in front of a 3,455 crowd at West Leigh Park. This meant Havant & Waterlooville needed to win their final game at Kingstonian or match Bognor's result. The Hawks were held to a 0-0 draw but clinched the title with 94 points after Bognor could only draw 1-1 at home to Metropolitan Police.
2017/18 Havant & Waterlooville won the Conference South title in 2017/18. Lee Bradbury’s side lost just one of their opening eight games, 2-1 at home to Bath City, then overcame a lean spell of just one victory in six matches. The Hawks lost 1-0 at title rivals Dartford in mid-January but lost only one of their last 17 games, 1-0 at Truro City. They hammered East Thurrock 6-1 in their penultimate match and pipped Dartford to the title on goal difference after winning 3-2 at home to Concord on the final day. Havant & Waterlooville won 25 of their 42 games, gaining 86 points. They also defeated Blackfield & Langley 3-0 in the Hampshire Senior Cup final.

The O’s maintained their unbeaten start to the season as Barnet’s winning run comes to an end in East London. It was the hosts who started well, McAnuff and Koroma both having efforts at goal in the opening ten minutes, the first saved by Cousins and the second off target.
Fonguck looked to double his tally soon after, bringing the ball forward to the edge of the box before hitting it left-footed into the arms of Brill.
The Bees first chance came nine minutes in when good inter-play between Elliott Johnson, making his 200th appearance for the Bees, and Jack Barham eventually found Josh Walker but he shot over the bar.
Justin Edinburgh rolled the dice on the hour, making a double change and this injection of energy paid off when they retook the lead in the 68th minute.
Leyton Orient would take the lead in the 11th minute from a free kick routine which saw Josh Coulson slide in to convert Charlie Lee’s header back across goal. Their advantage would last just 13 minutes however as Wes Fonguck hit a superb half-volley past Brill after David Tutonda’s knockdown for his second goal of the season. Johnson delivered a good cross from the left shortly after the half hour mark but it was headed away by Coulson just before it reached Barham. Barnet had performed well in the first half but, after the break, Orient came out fighting and Coroma delivered a good cross from the right but there was no one in red on the end of it.
35
Barnet lost possesion in the midfield, allowing Orient to counter and race down on the Bees goal. Craig Clay set up James Dayton and he hit a fine curling effort into the top left giving Cousins no chance. Several golden chances for Alabi came and went before the hosts bagged a third, Macauley Bonne initially striking the upright from close range before tapping home the rebound. It was damage limitation here on in, with wave after wave of Orient attack and with all subs made, Johnson picked up a minor knock and was moved up front. The Bees never looked like getting another goal but came close in injury time when Charlee Adams’ low volley had Brill scrambling but it went narrowly wide.

MATCH REPORT
The Bees bounced back from last weekend’s defeat by claiming a draw against AFC Fylde. Shaq Coulthirst opened the scoring for Barnet on 20 minutes but it was short-lived as Daniel Philliskirk’s header five minutes later meant the points were shared at The Hive.
A succession of chances fell Barnet’s way moments before the break with the first falling to David Tutonda whose effort whistled over the bar.
The visitors had the ball in the net with just eight minutes on the clock after Philliskirk beat Mark Cousins from close range but the linesman raised his flag for offside.
Charlee Adams fired low from distance but it was comfortable enough for Lynch before Wes Funguck’s attempt from inside the box was blocked on the line.
A sigh of relief from Barnet was nearly followed up by the perfect response when Coulthirst saw his shot-on-the-turn well saved by Jay Lynch.
The first chance of the second period fell to the visitors when Danny Rowe pulled the ball back before forcing Cousins into a low save from close range on 56 minutes.
The Bees’ number 10 was in the thick of it soon after when he played in Cheye Alexander on the right flank before the full-back laid off Jack Taylor who fired into the hands of the Fylde ‘keeper from the edge of the box.
Fylde’s Kellermann became the first player to pick up a yellow for kicking the ball away before Zaine Francis-Angol joined him in the referee’s book five minutes later for a foul on Alexander.
Up the other end, Jim Kellermann tested Cousins at his near post but the former Dagenham shot-stopper did well to palm his effort out for a corner. That chance came six minutes before Barnet broke the dead-lock. Coulthirst, who instigated the majority of the Bees’ early pressure, opened the scoring with a well-placed low shot from 20 yards out to give John Still’s men the lead. However, the one-goal advantage only lasted five minutes as Fylde’s Philliskirk latched onto a cross, heading home from close range to level the scoring. The Bees could have gone in front again just past the half-hour mark when a corner was cleared to the feet of Taylor who blasted low and hard into the hands of Lynch from the edge of the area.
38
A golden chance fell to The Coasters on 69 minutes when Serhat Tasdemir’s shot was well saved by Cousins before Joe Cardle pounced on the rebound but failed to convert from close range. Rowe could have put Fylde in front with five minutes of normal time remaining but his leftfooted effort from mid-way inside the Barnet box was well saved at the near post by Cousins. The Coasters’ number nine continued to cause problems minutes later after his thunderbolt of a strike from the edge of the area cannoned out of danger off the outside of the post. Despite Fylde’s chances in the second half, the Bees managed to hold on to claim a point. Still’s side are back in action on Tuesday night when they welcome Havant & Waterlooville to The Hive.

TAKING THE MIC
WHAT’S IN A NAME? I have always tried my best to pronounce players’ names correctly when running through the line-ups. Figuring it out is part of the accuracy required in the job and also a show of respect to the players. If in doubt, I make a point of cross-checking in the press box with the visiting media officer.
shortly before leaving Swansea for Everton. I now know that his name is pronounced “Gil-ver Say-ur-shaun”, with the softest of “d”s hidden at the end of the penultimate syllable.
A golden rule is to never take anything for granted. As an example from a different sport, when Poland’s Karol Zabik signed with the Peterborough Panthers Speedway team, I confidently labelled him according to the way his surname looked, maybe adding a slight “sh” sound to the “z”.
I have been very fortunate to have handled announcing duties for two Nigeria internationals at The Hive, against Senegal and Serbia, respectively. The Nigerian names were fairly straightforward, other than that as listed on the team sheet some had the first name before the last, but others the other way around! “Olarenwaju Kayode” was still a bit of a mouthful, though!
Right? Wrong! During the interval, I was approached by his irate landlady, with whom he lodged when racing in Britain, who informed me in no uncertain terms that his surname was pronounced “Zom-bik”. “But there’s no “o” or “m” in his name”, I staggered back, but ultimately she was right and I quickly amended the pronunciation. Another golden rule is not to assume that what you hear on TV or the radio is always accurate. About an hour before one of our pre-season friendlies at Underhill against Arsenal, the Gunners’ media man asked to run through the correct pronunciation of every name on his side of the team sheet. Most were different to the public’s understanding – I have forgotten most of them since (but one I can still remember is Lauren as “L-ow (as in “ouch”) – ren) – and led to some puzzled comments in the crowd as I read them out on the mic. In more recent times, Icelandic World Cup star Gylfi Sigurdsson featured at The Hive last year 40
I was thankful to Adil from our Sight and Sound Control team for his help – as a fluent Frenchspeaking Moroccan – with the Senegal list, while the Serbian list was complicated by having to read from a hand-written document – no time to re-type that night – that was complete with all the accents associated with that language! Despite the pressure, both occasions were real personal highlights, and I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to announce at each. I will leave you with one final story. I remember when the announcer at Forest Green made a complete hash – easily done - of “Giuliano Grazioli” in his opening pre-match run-through. Quick as a flash, though, he immediately followed up with “… but his friends call him “John Smith””. Now, THAT’S how to get a crowd straight back on your side

This weekend saw the second qualifying round, the fourth stage of fixtures, of this seasons’ edition of the FA Cup take place. Some of the notable results were Chester defeating City of Liverpool 4-0 at home, Southport winning 3-0 away at Farsley Celtic and Stockport County winning 2-1 away at South Shields. York City walked to a 5-0 home win against Ashton United, FC United of Manchester defeated Colne 2-0, with Bradford Park Avenue walking away from Darlington with a 1-0 win. Joining York with a 5-0 home win was Altrincham, who defeated Whitley Bay, Kidderminster Harriers, who won at Atherstone Town and Oxford City, who defeated Cray Valley PM.
Meanwhile, Nuneaton Borough were held to a 1-1 draw by division rivals Brackley Town, whilst Mickleover Sports won 7-1 away at Anstey Nomads, the joint lowest ranked team in the round, in the highestscoring game of the round so far. AFC Telford United won 3-1 at home to Bedford Town, Leatherhead went home after a 6-0 win away at Haverhill Rovers and Torquay United, arguably the biggest club in the round, defeated Lymington 6-0 away. The tie between Hungerford Town and Wantage Town was abandoned after 73 due to a severe injury to a Hungerford player, with the score at 0-0.
43
Out of our local teams in action this round, Hemel Hempstead Town cruised into the third qualifying round with a 6-1 win away at Bowers and Pitsea, whilst Wealdstone defeated Great Waking Rovers 2-0, Kings Langley drew 1-1 with Lewes and Hitchin Town drew 1-1 against Didcot Town. Chesham United fell to a 2-1 defeat at Welling United, whilst Kings Langley drew 1-1 with Lewes. St Albans City’s game at home to Corinthian Casuals was moved from the weekend to last night, and Hendon’s home tie against Lancing is yet to be scheduled. Therefore, the results of both games are at present unknown.
This weekend sees the third of the main FA first-team competitions kick-off, with the extra preliminary round of the FA Trophy kicking off. The round sees a total of 27 ties, or 54 clubs, competing, with all those sides coming from the eighth tier of English football, or the fourth step of the non-league pyramid. Due to the small number of fixtures and clubs involved, there are just a few local sides competing. Uxbridge take on Chalfont St. Peter whilst Romford entertain Great Wakering Rovers. Meanwhile, Cheshunt travel to Bedford Town and Waltham Abbey entertain Hastings United.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
Former Watford, Swansea City and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said that Celtic fans “should be alarmed” by the clubs’ poor start to the season. The Glasgow side are currently suffering their worst start to a league campaign for over 20 years. Sunday’s game saw the side concede a 1-0 lead, losing 2-1 thanks to a 93rdminute goal. The result leaves them in 6th place with 10 points from their 6 games played, winning 3, drawing 1 and losing 2. They lie 1 point behind the European qualification places and 6 off of league leaders Hearts, who have won all but one game, the other being a draw. “In the last couple of years, we’ve done that really well and playing in a style that is synonymous with the club. It hasn’t been the same but we have to work to make it better” said Rogers. “It’s a poor result for us but we have to go away now and take our medicine and get ready for Wednesday [a Scottish League Cup quarter-final trip to St Johnstone]”. The reigning champions have won domestic trebles for the past two seasons, taking the Premiership, FA Cup and League Cup.
GARY JOHNSON
Gary Johnson, the new manager of National League South side Torquay United has said that he wants to “increase the links” between the Gulls and nearby Championship side Bristol City. 62-year-old Johnson, who himself managed City between 2005 and 2010, hopes to make the connection between the clubs through his son Lee Johnson, who is the current City manager. “Not many managers at this level have got a manager in the Championship that wants to help” said Gary. “What Lee knows is that the way I work is similar to the way he works because he played for me for many years. So the club are comfortable giving me their young players because they know they’ll be taught the right things for when they’re ready for Bristol City”. United were relegated from League 2 in 2014, and after losing their millionaire owners they were taken over by supporters who could not provide enough funding, resulting in a relegation to the National League South last season.
Nigel Clough, son of legendary manager Brian Clough, has said that he thinks that the choice to call off his Burton Albion sides’ game away at Barnsley on Saturday was the “right decision”. The League 1 tie at Oakwell was due to kick off at 3pm, but was delayed initially whilst an air ambulance landed on the pitch to help treat a long-serving club matchday staff member Stephen Croft had a major medical emergency. The delay eventually resulted in the postponement, with it later being revealed that Croft had had a cardiac arrest. The club later said that he was in a “serious but stable condition”. “In the scheme of it, football doesn’t matter” said Clough. “It was our lads who spotted what happened and who called the medical people over. When it was announced the game was called off, all the crowd were applauding respectfully as they realise it is the right decision”. Clough also added that the players “were not in the right mental condition to play” after the incident.

Over to the Under 18s, last week also saw the draw for the second qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup, which we entered, drawing local rivals Boreham Wood at home. Leyton Orient also drew their near neighbours Romford, whilst Dagenham and Redbridge got Aveley. Hendon will play Kings Langley, Hemel Hempstead Town will go to Harefield United, and Welwyn Garden City will entertain Buckingham Athletic. Wingate and Finchley will play Hayes and Yeading United, Bishop’s Stortford will host Braintree Town and Colney Heath will take on Leverstock Green. Elsewhere, Torquay United will play Slimbridge, AFC Telford United will host Stourbridge, Wrexham will travel to Chester, and Hartlepool United will take on Hebburn Town. Today’s opponents Havant and Waterlooville will take on Moneyfields. All ties are set to be played the week of 1st October.
WHAT’S THE BUZZ
Florentino Perez, the president of Spanish giants Real Madrid has said that he rejects La Liga’s plan to play one Spanish league game per season in the USA. The league announced over the summer its’ plans to play a round of fixtures in America. However, as well as being met with anger from most clubs and their fans, the plans hit another issue last Friday when the Spanish Football Federation said that they could not authorise their proposal to play Girona’s match against Barcelona on 26th January 2019 in Miami until it receives more information. In order to switch the fixture to the Floridian City, it would need approval from the Spanish Football Federation and their American counterparts along with the agreement of both UEFA and CONCACAF. If the move does happen, it will become the first regular season European league match to have been played on a different continent. “We won’t go to the United States. I don’t know whose interest it is in to play there but it is not in the interests of the clubs or the supporters, so we outright reject it” said Perez.
Steven Gerrard has said that he has gotten his Rangers side “playing the Rangers way” after 5-1 win over St Johnstone at the weekend. “Today in patches was some of the best football I’ve seen from us” said Gerrard. “We’re trying to do it the Rangers way, which is good, exciting, attacking football”. The win saw them move up to second place on 11 points, above Hibernian and Livingston on goal difference. The win also sees them reduce the gap between themselves and the league leaders Hearts to five points. “We’re very happy. We asked the players to come in with the right attitude, forget about Thursday night and get the job done. I thought at times we played some really stunning football”.

LEYTON ORIENT AWAY POSTCARD Orient away (one of my favourite away days) couldn’t have been better timing, not only did it fall on my Dad’s birthday, but it was also the day before I was moving down to London for university. Me and my parents filled the car with my stuff early on Saturday morning and left Leeds at about 9:30am. We set off down the A1 and arrived in Leyton around 2pm due to the busy London traffic. Because my Dad worried about parking, he dropped me and my Mum near the ground so we could go ahead and get a programme and club badge. Luckily, my Dad found parking quite easily and therefore met us outside the ground at about 2:15 to go into the ground. We took our seats in the already busy away end and watched the teams warm up. By the time the teams were out for kick off, the away end was nice and loud with 610 Bees in fine voice to cheer the team on. The opening minutes of the game made it clear that this was going to be a competitive game with both teams taking the ball forward. Just 11 minutes in, Orient were the ones to take the lead with a goal from unmarked Josh Coulson. We responded well to this and got our own back just 12 minutes later. Wes Fonguck had the ball on the edge of the area, our fans yelled ‘shoot’, he did and what a beauty it was to put us level. The first half continued to be competitive but the scores were level at half time. At half time, we decided to move a couple of rows down so we could get a better view for the second half since the away stand has many annoying pillars obstructing our view! The second half started in a positive way for both teams but it was Orient who scored on 68 minutes curling the ball into the corner of the net. After this, it was clear we were unable to keep up and Orient scored another on 78 minutes after our failure to initially clear the ball. Nevertheless, the boys kept pushing and the fans stayed noisy but we were not able to find another goal in the afternoon as the game finished 3-1. We walked back to the car and for once headed the same way home as other Barnet fans, taking a trip to High Barnet to see my Grandma to celebrate Dad’s birthday. After a bit of pizza and cake we went to stay in a Travelodge in Boreham Wood, before moving me in the next day. Although it wasn’t the result we were after, there were certainly positives to take from our performance against a top side.

Wrexham 29 • 09 • 2018 - KICK OFF: 3:00PM LOCATION: THE RACECOURSE GROUND
MOLD ROAD, WREXHAM WALES LL11 2AH PHONE: 01978 262 129
KEY PERSONNEL
DIRECTIONS BY TRAIN
The current gaffer at the racecourse is Sam Ricketts. The Aylesbury born defender started his career at Oxford Utd and played over 100 games in the Premier League for Hull City and Bolton. He has notable spells Swansea City, Wolves and Coventry too. He joined Wrexham in May 2018.
BRIEF DIRECTIONS BY ROAD Nice drive this one.......leave the M6 at Junction 10a turning onto the M54. After approximately 21 miles the M54 becomes the A5. Stay on the A5 passing Shrewsbury and when you reach Oswestry turn right at the roundabout (An ESSO Service Station will be on your left), staying on the A5. At the junction of the A5 and the A483 (A blasted McDonalds Drive Through will be on your right) go straight on at the roundabout to join the A483 signposted Ruabon and Wrexham. After approximately 8 miles leave the A483 at the junction of the A541 signposted Wrexham and Mold. At the roundabout turn right towards Wrexham and after going straight over the next roundabout the ground is ahead of you on your left on the A541.
CAR PARKING There is car parking available at the ground for (I believe) £4.00 per car. Street parking is also available.
54
Door to door this one, as Wrexham General station is adjacent to the ground. The journey from Euston will take between 3 and 4 hours and may necessitate a change at Birmingham, Crewe and/or Chester.
EATING AND DRINKING LOCALLY Bearing in mind that the first recognised Lager Brewery in Europe was actually founded in Wrexham in 1882, having a beer before the game is very easy and we are spoilt for choices of pubs. One of the best is The Turf, right next to the Kop Terrace and is mainly used by home supporters. Peter Jones from the Wrexham Supporters Trust previously sent this invitation to Bees fans “The Wrexham Lager and Sports and Social Club: You can find the club by walking past the ground towards the town centre. You go over the railway bridge and will then come to a Post Office sorting depot on your left. The club is situated in Union Road opposite only a five-minute walk from the ground. It is friendly and has reasonably priced beer and food with a big screen for SKY Sports. All will be made welcome”. Many visiting fans have visited for the last few seasons and the feedback I get is excellent so I’ll check it out. At the back of the Yale Stand is the recently refurbished Centenary Club which allows in away fans. It is free to enter, has Sky Sports and also offers food in the form of Pie & Peas, it is also handy for the away turnstiles.

THE RECKLESS GUIDE TO
According to official club reports “The favoured pub for away fans is the Plas Coch. it is a restaurant type pub, with a large beer garden, that is located past the ground going away from the town centre, near to the Sainsburys Petrol Station. It is about a five minute walk away from the stadium’. The pub is on the Plas Coch Retail Park opposite NEWI, where you can also park for the afternoon, at a cost of £2” Reckless recommendation - in the town centre the Golden Lion, oh yes.
August 1974. A rare book “Nixon - Fy Dyffryn Cartref” by Alex Jones gives a fascinating insight into the muchregretted quest to find his Welsh kinfolk. On another American theme, buried in a Wrexham graveyard is Elihu Yale who as one of the first British settlers across the pond founded the world famous Yale University in 1701. Yes, he is responsible for the education of the men and ladies who went on to invent peanut butter and jam sandwiches, and the Burger Drive Through.
OUR LAST MEETING & MEMORIES
GROUND DESCRIPTION The ground is recognised as the oldest in the World to still host International Football, the first in 1877. The stadium or at least the site, the clues are there, was built for Horse Racing in 1807 and has also hosted Cricket. For a decade up until 1992 the ground was only 3 sided before the arrival of the Mold Stand with its distinctive curved roof. The original stands here sat some distance from the pitch. Opposite is the main or Yale Stand which was built in 1972. To the right is the very impressive Kop End terrace which sadly is now not used – it is partly covered at the back and once held 6,000 standing – marvellous. To the left is the Glyndwr University Stand another two-tiered affair built in 1978 We will be offered seats in the Yale Stand with huge parts of the ground not open as the capacity of over 10,000 within the stadium is very rarely tested in this division.
Our last meeting was in February 2015 in the Conference, it was a long journey home after a narrow 1-0 defeat It was a happy 48th birthday to me as good old Liam Hatch scored twice in a 2-0 win in October 2008. Our visit in 1993 was very painful as Gary Phillips and his “merry men” played bravely as ever in that fateful Division 2 season but were still soundly beaten 4-0. The return fixture at Underhill was another defeat, a closely fought 2-1 including a rare goal from “The Sidewinder” Peter Scott. A season earlier it was a different story as the dynamic duo of Gary Bull and Mark Carter scored in a thrilling 3-2 victory over the border while Carter, Derek Payne and Micky Bodley scored in a 3-1 win at Underhill - over 4,000 watched.

CELEBRITY WATCH It is now widely known that the 37th President of the USA Richard M Nixon’s ancestors came originated from Wrexham. His attempts to keep this earth-shattering information quiet were fruitless and consequently, he had to resign the Presidency in shame in 55
