Good afternoon and a very warm welcome back to The Hive London for this National League fixture against Solihull Moors. I would like to extend that welcome to Tim Flowers, his staff, officials and supporters. Looking back at Wrexham, it was once again a tough game. I didn’t think we were great in the first half but I thought we were solid. Second half I thought we were terrific, I thought we attacked from the off, I thought our energy levels were good and our ability levels were good. Add into that the fact, with the greatest of respect, we only had one proper striker on the pitch who wasn’t 100% fit, I thought we put in a good performance and were disappointed not to take anything from the game. They’re one of the teams that’s in that top group at the moment, but we’re not far behind them. In terms of our selection situation, I thought that the boys did terrifically well and I was pleased.
Solihull are now established at this level, they’re a strong side in a league which gets stronger year on year. The thing I keep trying to impress on our players is we have to be at it every week. We can only work to maximums, players can only give everything they’ve got. I know they’re doing that and I’m really, really pleased.
Sometimes it won’t go for us but we have to accept that as long as everyone works to their maximum. Enjoy the game,

NOTES
Hello everyone and welcome back to The Hive London for today’s game against Solihull Moors! It’s a bit crazy at the moment, I’ve not seen anything like it, and I’m sure you’ve have already heard this but it’s true - we could field a starting XI of injured players that would be more than capable of challenging in the league, let alone on a Saturday game. Wrexham is a tough place to go, especially with the options we had available to us and once they score, they’re very good at defending the lead. From what I’ve heard from the boys and from what I’ve seen, they were very hard to break down. But it’s time to move on now and look forward to today’s game.
Solihull are a side that has had a good start to the season, their manager came in last year and turned things around when it wasn’t looking very good and they’re difficult to play against, especially with the good players they have added this season. We can’t and wouldn’t take them lightly, the table doesn’t lie and they will try and make it a difficult afternoon for us.
But, that said, we are at home and we need to get back to winning ways. Come on you Bees!

INTRODUCING SOLIHULL MOORS FC
Solihull Moors FC is a merger between the former Solihull Borough and Moor Green football clubs. Solihull Borough was formed in 1953 by Joe McGorian and the Club was originally known as Lincoln FC. Borough progressed through the local leagues before joining the Midland Combination in 1969, where they spent 22 seasons, eventually resulting in promotion to the Southern League. In 1989 the club was forced to sell it’s Widney Lane ground to property developers but after a proposed relocation fell through, a ground-share was agreed with local neighbours Moor Green - this was to last for ten years until the purchase of Damson Park in August 1999. Moor Green was formed in 1901. The first ground was on a part of a farm in Moor Green Lane, Moseley. Their ancestral home, The Moorlands, was acquired in 1930, and was situated in Hall Green, a suburb of south Birmingham. The 2003/4 season was a momentous one for Moors gaining a place in the newly formed Nationwide Conference North; However, the inaugural season was to prove a traumatic one with the devastation caused by two arson attacks at The Moorlands in January 2005, when the main stand and clubhouse were gutted leaving the club homeless. Moors thus became tenants of Solihull Borough at Damson Park With both clubs struggling to secure gates big enough to sustain the two teams, the merger of both seemed an obvious way forward and formed in the summer of 2007, Solihull Moors Football Club became one of the youngest clubs in senior English football. The new club took the place of Moor Green in the Blue Square Conference North. Bob Faulkner, the Moor Green manager was given the job to take the new club forward, but Borough Boss Mickey Moore would return in the new club’s hour of need. For their first season Bob Faulkner ran with much the same team as the last Moor Green outfit and the Moors first competitive game was a 1-1 draw at home to Barrow AFC on August 11th, 2007, with a 90th minute equalizer from 11
Darren Middleton, earning him the accolade of scoring the first league goal for Solihull Moors. The first win came two weeks later with a 3-1 home victory over Gainsborough Trinity, but the remainder of the campaign proved a struggle with the team rarely out of the bottom six in the league table. Survival was confirmed after the 40th league game of the season with a memorable 2-1 victory at Blyth Spartans on the penultimate Tuesday of the season. Andy Ducros was the goal scoring hero with a brace of goals. The Moors finished 17th in the league with 47 points. There was a decent run in the FA Cup, as the fourth qualifying round was reached. A 3-0 win at Soham Town Rangers, with Jason Moore scoring the first ever Solihull hat trick, and then an unforgettable 2-1 win at Blue Square North leaders Kettering Town. However, Moors failed to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup after a 5-0 defeat at ex Blue Square Premier outfit Rushden & Diamonds. Eight new signings greeted the start 2008/09 season but it soon proved to be a struggle with only two points being gained from the first five games. In truth, it was the away form which kept the Moors sucked in at the wrong end of the table with only 16 points being collected away from Damson Park. Keeper Danny Crane, the enormous central defender Liam Daly and striker Jake Edwards did, however, suggest that the tide was turning but nevertheless Solihull finished in 16th position, with a better points total than the previous season, so progress of some sort was made. Whilst the first team was battling at the wrong end of the table, the youth team were having a storming season. They finished as champions of the Midland Floodlit Youth League, finishing ten points clear of AFC Telford United and also reached the second round proper of the FA Youth Cup before finally bowing out 2-0 at home to Tranmere Rovers in a tense, close game. Earlier in the competition, Solihull had caught the attention of many people with a comprehensive 18-0 win over Wellington in a qualifying round. Five of the squad signed for the Senior club during the season.

2011/12
During the summer break before the 2011/12 season Mickey Moore decided to take up an offer from Mansfield Town and Marcus Bignot, ex Crewe, Bristol Rovers, QPR and Millwall was announced as his replacement a week later. He inherited a youthful squad but the spark was missing and having won no pre season friendlies, we lost the first seven games of the season. Using his connections in the game, Marcus brought in several new players, and the tide began to turn, so much so that by January the possibility of the play offs seemed achievable. However, it proved impossible to maintain the momentum and by the end of the season the club finished just one point above the drop zone.
2012/13 saw a blend of youth and experience but with only one win the first six outings, manager Bignot brought himself out of retirement for the visit to Droylsden and Moors took all three points in a 4 – 2 score line. Things got a lot better in November when we recorded back to back wins against title chasing Guiseley and Altrincham and by mid season eyes were cautiously cast at the play off positions although by April we were four places adrift of the mark but a creditable ninth league position.

BOB FAULKNER
The 2009/10 campaign saw another poor start despite summer signings which on paper looked good. By mid September Moors were languishing in 21st place. Bob Faulkner brought in 10 more players to stem the tide and a wonderful run between mid January and mid March saw the team up to a healthy 13th in the league. It was all to little avail, however, as by the end of a gruelling season Moors were again back in 17th position having gained only 3 more points in the final 7 games of the season. A total of 42 points
By the start of the 2010/11 season, our manager of 25 years, had put together the best by far Moors team we had seen. . Bob said that this team would need time to settle but would score goals. New goal keeper Jasbir Singh ably supported by a formidable defence lead by captain Theo Streete had none of the frailties of previous teams, whilst club stalwart Junior English, new boy Adam Cunnington and the master signing from last season, Ryan Beswick, were able to attack in a manner not seen by supporters for many years . Maintaining a healthy position for the first half of the season, we were all shattered when Bob Faulkner sadly passed away in February. Amazingly this galvanised the team and with Mickey Moore stepping up to fill the empty void the Moors went from strength to strength and with 8 games to go were in the play off places. It was emotional for us all and with a small squad, draining for the players – the momentum slipped and we missed out by 4 points.

OWEN STORY
2015/16
2015/16 saw 11 new signings with Vanarama National League experience and it was clear as early as the pre season friendlies that this could be the squad to take us up to the National League. We went on an unbeaten run that lasted into December and remained unbeaten away (bar one unfortunate day at Harrogate) throughout the whole season. Having flirted around the top of the table throughout the first half of the season we started the second half as league leaders after taking six points off Nuneaton over the Christmas / New Year holiday period and there we stayed winning the title three weeks before the end of the campaign.
LIAM MCDONALD
2016/17
2016/17 and our first season in The National League saw a different looking squad than the one expected following the winning of the National North. Gone were Michael Nottingham (Salford), Club Captain Theo Streete (injury), Gaz Dean, Jimmy Armson and Adam Walker (all Brackley) and our longest serving player by a country mile, Junior English (Worcester). Replacements in the shape of Jamey Osborne (Redditch) Shep Murombedzi (Torquay), Jordan Fagbola (Rochdale), Omari Sterling-James (Cheltenham), and Harry White (Barnsley) completed the picture, whilst the coaching staff was strengthened with the addition of Gary Whild from Kidderminster Harriers and Solihull old boy Mickey Moore back from Mansfield Town. We took 22 points from our first 18 games in the top league - history suggested that form would just about keep us up at the end of the season. However at the end of October Marcus Bignot suddenly quit the club to take over at Grimsby and took with him Whild and Moore (and soon after, Osborne and Asante)

2014/15
Marcus Bignot decided to run with the nucleus of the previous seasons team bolstered by new signings in the shape of Liam Daly and Tony Breeden from Leamington and Owen Story from Brackley Town. The first half of the season saw Moors in the play off positions but just like the previous campaign results after Christmas were disappointing and the team finished 12th in the league with 55 points. On the Youth/ Community side vastly experienced Mark Fogarty was brought it as the momentum in this area was stepped up and Moors became an established name in the Borough for providing football opportunities for school children and members of society who for a variety of reasons could not find an outlet for their soccer skills.
2013/14
2013/14 saw the successful culmination of efforts to introduce a proper youth structure and ladies/girls section into the club. The number of teams grew from three to twenty seven! The club looked forward to growing it’s own local talent. Most of the previous team stayed and were joined by seven quality players from the Midlands for what was another good season. The team finished eighth in the league having been top at the half way stage whilst gates increased by 80%. Major changes in the basic structure were introduced as Solihull Moors transformed itself into a community interest club.
BARNETFC.COM
The void was filled by Liam McDonald a 31 year old who had successfully cut his managerial teeth at Redditch and Hednesford. What was about to follow was a massive reorganisation of the coaching and playing staff with younger players, mostly from lower divisions, filling the gaps. With the blend of new talent combined with the experience of those few stalwarts from the previous campaign, a new force under the Captaincy of Liam Daly began to emerge. There was much to learn and the path was rocky but survival was ensured in the penultimate game of the season which saw Moors finish in sixteenth spot with 54 points. Off the pitch The Automated Technology Group Stadium was brought up to National League standard whilst Moors Academy and Community Moors went from strength to strength.

Saw a miserable start to the season as we propped up the league. Liam McDonald made way for Richard Money, but he quit after just 20 days before Mark Yates took over the reins with Tim Flowers as his assistant. At that stage The Club had played 20 league matches and amassed just eleven points. In his term of office Moors played 26, won 11, drew 10 and lost 5. At home they were unbeaten up to the last game of the season. Had they produced that form throughout the entire season we would certainly have made the play offs.

Another close season signing Ryan turned professional at Port Vale in April 2013 having initially been an academy player at Stoke City. In a five-year career there he made 28 appearances, mainly last season, plus various loan spells at Worcester City, Newcastle and Macclesfield. In 2013 he had a trial at Fulham. He is particularly highly regarded for his kicking ability. Strangely, he did not start out as a goalkeeper “I used to play outfield, and during a tournament, our keeper got injured and I was forced to go in goal. “ However, with Vale having two other contracted keepers, Ryan was released upon the expiry of his contract in May this year.
The 26-year-old who has signed for another season, originally joined Moors after a spell with Oldham Athletic and for two seasons before that with Scottish Premier League side Ross County for whom he made 42 appearances. He made his debut against Boreham Wood last season and scored the winning goal away at Barrow in late December. Left-back Jamie was born in Wolverhampton and joined Wolves academy at just 10 years old. He achieved two caps for England under 16’s and two for the under seventeens before signing forms for the Championship club in 2010. Although a full back by trade, Jamie likes to join in attacks with bursts up and down the left flank.

Versatile defender Tyrone Williams was signed from Kidderminster Harriers in February last season. The 23-year-old was a graduate of the Harriers academy after signing his first professional contract in 2013. He made his first team debut for the National North team in 2016 (at which time he was Harriers longest serving player) and went on to make more than 70 appearances, with loan spells at Hednesford, Redditch and Stourbridge providing him with valuable experience. The 23-year-old, comfortable at centre back and right back quickly established himself as a regular in Moors team. He is a powerful defender who can also score goals.

Liam first joined Moors in 2008 from Redditch United, having previously been at Birmingham City as a youngster. He joined Leamington in 2010, where in four seasons he made almost 200 appearances for the club scoring 20 goals. He helped the Brakes to win the Southern League Premier title in 2013 reaching double figures in goals and becoming Club captain. Liam returned to Moors for the start of the 2014/15 campaign and after a few weeks at Kidderminster at the start of last season returned to the club again. His strength and experience were vital as we hauled ourselves away from relegation just a few months ago. His presence in the back four is massive. He has amassed 219 games for us.

He played at Wembley in the nail biting Buildbase FA Trophy win over Bromley. Alex progressed through the youth ranks at Nuneaton Town as they won promotion the Conference but is was at Rugby Town that he made his mark as a 19-year-old and went on to play 111 times for them collecting the Player of the Season award in his first season and being made Club Captain for the 2013/14 season. Solihull-born Osborne came through the youth ranks at Hednesford Town and was promoted to the first team towards the end of the 2009/10 season. After a spell at Redditch he joined Moors in April 2016 and was an integral part of the Moors squad that retained its Vanarama National League status in the subsequent season. He moved onto Grimsby Town half way through the campaign before last signing a two-and-a-half year deal but happily for Moors returned on loan during the first half of the previous season, subsequently signing contracts to stay permanently. 1980/81 Moor Green achieved the Midland Combination League and Cup ‘double’ in 1980-81. Harry Shepherd’s side stormed to the Midland Combination title, winning 28 of their 38 matches and losing just three times. The Moors were leading scorers with 109 goals and shared the best defensive record with Cinderford Town. They gained 63 points, finishing 12 ahead of runners-up Bridgnorth Town. In the Midland Combination Cup, Moor Green beat King’s Heath 2-1 and Bridgnorth 4-0 before defeating Boldmere St Michaels 1-0 after extra-time in the final at Central Grounds. They lost 2-0 at home to Banbury United in the FA Cup third qualifying round.
1982/83 Moor Green finished Midland Combination runners-up in 1982-83. Chris Wright’s side won 27 of their 38 Midland Combination games and were leading scorers with 106 goals. They gained 60 points, finishing four behind champions Bridgnorth Town. The Moors beat Chipping Norton 3-0, Racing Club Warwick 4-2, Solihull Borough 6-2 and Highgate United 4-0 in the Midland Combination Cup before losing 2-0 to Paget Rangers in the final. They lost 2-1 at Holbeach in the FA Cup third qualifying round but defeated Macclesfield Town in the FA Trophy first qualifying round. Moor Green were promoted to the Southern League Midland Division.

1987/88 Moor Green finished Southern League Midland Division runners-up in 1987-88. Bob Faulkner’s side won 28 of their 42 games and scored 91 goals, trouncing Coventry Sporting 7-2 and Paget Rangers 6-1 at The Moorlands. They also completed the double over champions Merthyr Tydfil, winning 4-1 at Penydarren Park, pipping Grantham to second place with 86 points. Moor Green lost 2-0 at Hayes in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round. Dave Fearon was captain, while former Aston Villa, Lincoln City and Scunthorpe United defender David Hughes was ‘Player of the Year’. Fellow defender Dave Busst later played in the top-flight with Coventry City.
1990/91 Solihull Borough finished Midland Combination runners-up in 1990-91. The title race went to the final day and Ralph Punsheon’s side needed only a draw at home to West Midlands Police to deny their opponents a first title triumph. But, after a goalless first-half, a crowd of around 1,000 saw the Police clinch the championship with two second half goals. For Solihull it was heartbreak for the second time as three days earlier they had lost 4-2 to Boldmere St Michaels in the Midland Combination Cup final. Ollie Latchford, the son of former Birmingham goalkeeper Dave, was leading marksman, while Alan Ollis was ‘Player of the Year’ and Clive Boxall captain.
1991/92 Solihull Borough won the Southern League Midland Division title in 1991-92. Ralph Punsheon signed several experienced players, including former Walsall central defender Phil Hawker, with Solihull winning the title at the first attempt. Chris Burton was leading marksman with 28 goals as Solihull won 29 of their 42 games. Their only home defeat was 1-0 against Bedworth United and they gained 97 points, finishing six ahead of runners-up Hednesford Town. The turning point in the championship race was Solihull’s astonishing 6-1 victory at home to Hednesford in mid-March. Former England U-21 striker Keith Bertschin helped Borough to clinch the title.

1992/92 Solihull Borough reached the FA Cup first round proper for the first time in 1992-93. Ralph Punsheon’s side beat Hemel Hempstead 3-1, Cheshunt 4-0, Braintree 4-1 and Chesham 3-1 to reach the FA Cup first round proper. Goals by Andy Canning and Ricky Carter gave Solihull a 2-2 draw at home to VS Rugby: Darrel Houghton, Alan Byrne (Phil Hawker), Ollie Latchford, Clive Boxall, Paul Dyson, Alan Ollis, Jan Mulders, Mick Tuohy, Andy Canning, Ricky Carter, Chris Burton. They lost 2-1 after extra-time in the replay. Ricky Carter and Chris Burton scored 47 goals as Solihull finished seventh in the Southern League Premier Division.
1997/98 Solihull Borough reached the FA Cup first round proper for only the second time in 1997-98. They defeated Burton Albion 2-0, Grantham Town 2-1, Woodbridge Town 6-0 and Stalybridge Celtic 4-3 to reach the FA Cup first round proper. Experienced striker Nicky Cross scored to give Solihull a 1-1 draw at Darlington. Two goals by top scorer Joe Dowling plus another from Nicky Cross gave Solihull a 3-3 draw after extra-time in the replay in front of a record 2,135 crowd before losing 4-2 on penalties. Solihull won 7-1 at Corby Town and finished third in the Southern League Midland Division. They lost 3-2 at Morecambe in the FA Trophy first round.
2010/11 Solihull Moors reached the Birmingham Senior Cup final for the first time since the two clubs merged in 2007. Solihull Borough and Moor Green had both previously won the trophy. The Moors lost 2-0 to West Brom in the final at The Hawthorns. Strikers Adam Cunnington and Matt Smith formed a lethal partnership as Solihull Moors only narrowly missed out on the Conference North play-offs, finishing in seventh place following a late season collapse. Manager Bob Faulkner sadly died in February, after almost 25 years in charge of Moor Green and Solihull Moors combined, replaced by his assistant Micky Moore for the remainder of the season.

2015/16 Solihull Moors stormed to the Conference North title in 2015-16. Marcus Bignot’s side won 25 of their 42 games and suffered just one away defeat. They gained 85 points, finishing nine ahead of runners-up North Ferriby United and winning the title comfortably with three games to spare. Akwasi Asante was leading marksman with 17 goals. Promotion to the Conference National was secured on a night that Solihull were not even playing, as a defeat for North Ferriby at Stalybridge Celtic mathematically confirmed their championship success. The Moors also lifted the Birmingham Senior Cup, defeating Birmingham City 2-1 at St Andrews.
2016/17 Solihull Moors reached the FA Cup second round proper for the first time in 2016-17. Newly-promoted Solihull began their Conference National campaign with a 3-1 victory at Sutton United. The Moors won 4-0 at home to Southport in their first televised match in early October. They beat Kettering Town 3-1 to reach the FA Cup first round and two goals by Jack Byrne secured a 2-2 draw at Yeovil Town. Solihull won 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the replay but lost 6-2 at Luton Town in the second round. Marcus Bignot left to become Grimsby Town’s manager in November and was replaced by Liam McDonald. Solihull finished 16th in the Conference.

ALEX JONES DIGRESSES SOLIHULL MOORS As with Fylde, there is a scarcity of history between the two clubs playing this afternoon. By scarcity I mean we have never been to Moor Green, or played Solihull either, according to the BFCSA records, although as I trawled the letter S, I was intrigued by a 7-1 victory at Sittingbourne the year that I was born.
Llandudno A non-league website invited people to contribute articles and pictures on their favourite Welsh ground, so here is an edited version of my article for Llandudno FC who play on the 3G surface of Maesdu Park. Given the task of writing about my favourite Non-League ground, I consulted with the website footballgroundsmap site which many of you will be familiar with. There I am in the Top 10 of Barnet fans on a respectable 315. I have yet to visit Llandudno, but have seen cricket several times in Rhos on Sea, including a spectacular triple century for Steve James, and a Colwyn Bay friendly, which I believe was against Scarborough, but my memory is not what it was. Further along the coast I ventured to Rhyl which was, at the time without a club house. Walked up the Great Orme, and our Paula’s mum runs a bed and breakfast in your town, which I’m sure is worth staying in at competitive rates.
Take me to the Vetch Field As a child I often went to the then home of Swansea City, who came perilously close to joining the Vauxhall Conference, one game in fact, but I listened to the game on Radio Wales, as the reception on crackly Medium 30
Wave was loud and clear. Returning to the Vetch, Dylan Thomas famously wrote of an “ugly lovely town”. This could so easily have applied to the Vetch, which was a piecemeal sprawling structure, clearly dating from several different decades. The toilets were quite hideous, both behind the North Bank, and in the away section. The ground had a charm, but the seven years enjoyed in the top level or the League Cup triumph would not have happened had they stayed there, and I’m sure locals enjoy the allotments which have sprung up on the former site.
My Favourite Thing So after the digression, you are keen to know where my accolade of Best NonLeague Ground in Wales goes, and for that I return to my previous theme of cricket. Glamorgan once played at Abergavenny, although this sadly no longer gets visited. The wicket often favoured the batsmen, and somewhere I have a photo of King Viv. However I vote for Peny Pound Stadium, even though the home side are sadly no longer known as Abergavenny Thursdays. The views of the Sugar Loaf Mountain, and of God’s county Breconshire are simply breath-taking.
Falklands fixture November, but there is a reason for thinking ahead, the England C team will fly to the Falklands for a special representative fixture. A debate on the Only Barnet site seemed to indicate that Paul Fairclough would call upon the services of players competing in Step 6 of the pyramid, This provoked some lively discussion, as you can probably imagine. I pointed out that my BARNETFC.COM
former student Hettie briefly emigrated to Malvinas She may have watched the Shetlands or Aland Islands, but have improved since 2001, when twelve goals were conceded in total against Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
FA CUP Countless Wealdstone fans walked up to Joe Gibney when he visited Wealdstone, asking if he was the same correspondent who featured in our pages. He will see them again and may see another goal for Fumnaya Shomotun.
Alan Hall The e-programme is a godsend to those of us living away from the Capital, but I reread the Fylde edition to discover the sad passing of Alan Hall. Coincidentally I read this on what would have been the birthday of my mum and her sister. Mary was buried recently. Neither twin met Alan, but he would have relished their competitive nature and talked with his familiar eloquent turn of phrase. Rest in peace mate.
Aint no pleasing You Not sure if Alan enjoyed the music of Chas and Dave but I was lucky enough to meet the late Chas Hodges a couple of years ago. Featured in the movie Telstar, the first hit the charts as one of Cliff Bennett’s Rebel Rousers. Therefore his career stretches over several decades and I remember the Top of The Pops when Ossie got to predict he would “Win the Cup for Tottenham”.

Andreas Robinson cancelled out two Shaq Coulthirst goals as The Bees had to share points for the second game running. John Still’s side dominated proceedings in the early stages of the game with the first chance falling to Jack Taylor in the opening minute but his volley from close range was saved at the near post. The hosts had another chance to break the dead-lock soon after when Coulthirst’s shoton-the-turn from the edge of the area fell wide. It was Walker’s turn to pose a threat on six minutes when he was played through on goal but his low-placed drive fizzed wide of the post. The Chances kept falling to Barnet in the opening 10 minutes and Charlee Adams would be disappointed his ambitious effort from distance flew narrowly past the goal-frame. However, The Bees did have their noses in front on 11 minutes when Coulthirst buried the ball low and hard from the spot after the referee awarded a penalty following a push on Dan Sweeney. The opener prompted the visitors to tighten up their defence and the Bees found it hard to maintain their earlier superiority. However, after a corner was cleared to Craig Robson, the temporary skipper hit the ball first time from close range but Ben Dudzinski did well to prevent the hosts from doubling their lead. Hawks skipper Brian Stock found his name in the referee’s book in the latter stages of the first period after a late tackle on Adams from inside the centre circle. Nicke Kabamba posed a threat on the stroke 36
of half-time when his cross deflected onto the roof of the net but The Bees held on to take a one-goal advantage into the break. Andre Boucaud replaced Dan Sweeney at the interval but his time on the field was shortlived after picking up an injury and making way for Ephron Mason-Clark on 53 minutes. Coulthirst nearly found the net again just past the hour mark after latching onto Cheye Alexander’s free-kick but his header whistled over. Wes Fonguck nearly marked his England C call-up with a goal on 65 minutes, forcing Dudzinski into a strong save after bending an effort that looked to be floating into the top right corner. Tyler Cordner picked up a yellow for the visitors with just over 20 minutes remaining before substitute Robinson equalised with a stunning bending effort from the edge of the area seconds later. However, The Bees regained their lead soon after as Coulthirst bagged his brace after curling in a strike that nestled the bottom right corner. Two dangerous chances in quick succession fell to Alexander and Mason-Clark respectively but Dudzinski did well to prevent the lead from extending. The missed chances proved costly as Robinson was on hand again to ensure his side returned home with a point after a free-kick in stoppage time flew past Mark Cousins. Still’s men travel to Wrexham on Saturday aiming to return to winning ways.

A first half strike from Stuart Beavon the difference as good pressure towards the end was not enough. Wrexham started brightly and Beavon played Holroyd seven minutes in, but the forward was flagged offside. Jordan Maguire-Drew had the first clear cut opportunity of the game when he was played through, he his effort was off target. Akil Wright was then almost in on 25 minutes, when Mark Cousins fumbled a high ball under pressure from Holroyd, but the ball was turned behind. Shortly before the break, Wrexham took the lead through Beavon when he slotted home into the right corner. Barnet’s first shot on target came in the second half when Wes Fonguck latched on to a mistake by the Wrexham defence but Lainton saved well. Wrexham looked to push for a second, however, and Maguire-Drew’s cross found Beavon on 54 minutes but his effort was off target. On the hour mark, Barnet began to push and stretch the Wrexham defence further back. The Bees continued to deal with everything thrown their way and with only a one goal defecit, they were very much still in the game. Substitute Nana Kyei’s low shot was saved by Lainton on 80 minutes. A foul on the edge of the area gave Dan Sparkes a chance at a goal but his effort and follow up shot were both blocked.. Robson’s header at the end of regulation time from Kyei’s cross looped agonisingly over the bar.

TAKING THE MIC
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER Being a Barnet supporter seems to be permanently about extreme highs and lows. Mid-table anonymity is almost never on the menu. I am proud to have been associated with the club for the season-long highs of two of their three National League titles. The first, in 2004-2005, saw the Bees make an absolutely jet-propelled start, and almost never look back. Seven wins and a draw from the first eight games immediately pushed them to the top of the mountain, although the real tipping point came in the 3-1 success at Carlisle on October 16th, a result that opened up a six point gap on the second placed Cumbrians. The chants of “We’re on our way” grew louder week by week. The Bees ultimately romped the league by an even dozen, with the match highlights at Underhill including a televised 5-0 victory over Dagenham (sorry, John) and the even more emphatic 7-1 blast past Farnborough. Two particular Underhill games, however, stand out in my own memory. The first: the match where the Bees finally clinched the title with a 3-1 win over Halifax. When Giuliano Grazioli netted the third goal to make sure of the victory, my colleague Dick Rolfe didn’t wait until the final whistle to play “We are the Champions”. He hit ‘play’ on the chorus then and there. At full volume.
immediately afterwards. The Cumbrians did their best to water down that post-match party by taking the lead through Bee-to-be Magno Vieira. Despite two sendings off, they were still ahead until the sixth minute of added time, when Graz slotted home his 29th goal of the season in a very crowded goalmouth. No one from our vantage point – including the Barnet bench – was quite sure at the time who had scored, and for the first and only time I announced a goal but not a scorer, with “We’re not quite sure who got it, but we are sure that the Bees have the equaliser!” Calling on the players, one by one, to collect their medals, and then the captain, Ian Hendon, to receive the championship trophy itself, was an unforgettable moment, and I feel privileged to have played a support role in the occasion. Just ahead of the presentations, I made a point of telling my children, who were both at the game, that, “This type of thing doesn’t come along very often. Savour every moment.” It was a pointer I would be reminded of a decade later….
The other, quite obviously: our home finale against play-off bound Carlisle, with the formal trophy and medals presentation scheduled for

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
WHAT’S THE BUZZ JOSH PALMER
“My ultimate ambition is to manage Scotland” generally isn’t what you want to hear your teams’ current manager say, especially after he has only recently joined. However, that is exactly what Sunderland boss Jack Ross has said in an interview this week. The former Clyde, Falkirk and St Mirren defender, who only made 1 appearance for his country as a player – in 2009 for Scotland B, took over the Black Cats in the summer, following their relegation to the third tier. They currently sit in fourth place in League 1, with 5 wins and five draws from their 11 games to date. “I wanted to play for my country as a player. I got a B cap and that was it” said Ross, 42. “But I grew up watching Scotland at Hampden a lot with my dad as a kid, and it is always something that has drawn me back. That opportunity would only come, though, if I am successful in club management”.
JACK ROSS
Staying with the FA Trophy, the draw for the next round, the preliminary round, which will take place next weekend, has also been drawn this week. Greenwich Borough will be hosting Egham Town, whilst Northwood will be traveling to Dunstable Town, and Bedford Town are going to Tilbury. Ware will be visiting Horsham and Chalfont St Peter will host Malden and Tipree. Welwyn Garden City have been drawn to play away at Chipstead, Berkhamsted will host South Park and Barking will entertain Hayes and Yeading United in a London derby. The first qualifying round will take place at the end of the month, before the second qualifying round and third qualifying rounds take place next month. Ourselves, and our visitors today Solihull Moors, enter the competition along with the rest of the National League Premier sides in the first round, which will takes place on 15th December, with the draw set to take place on Monday 26th November.
This week has seen another managerial casualty at this earlier stage of the season, as more clubs try and sort out their form before it is too late. This time it is former St Albans City, Southend United, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace defender Dean Austin who has lost his job at Northampton Town, becoming the fifth man to depart from the helm of the club since their promotion to League 1 in May 2016. He joined the side last May, taking over from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a job he joined initially as caretaker to attempt to save the side from relegation, which he ultimately failed in. His sacking comes after a 4—0 defeat away at Mansfield Town, a result leaving fourth from bottom in the table, with just one win so far this season. “I know that I can do the job, don’t worry about that. It’s not an easy job, particularly at the minute” said Austin in an interview after the game. “Results dictate everything, don’t they? But you’re telling me that a new manager will come in and get something different out of that lot in there? Good luck with that one”. It was announced shortly after his departure that former Carlisle United manager Keith Curle will be the sides’ next manager.
DEAN AUSTIN
Last weekend saw the third and final of the FA’s first team national competitions kick off. The extra preliminary round of the FA Trophy saw several of our local teams kick off their campaigns in the FA’s second tier campaign. First, Uxbridge drew 1-1 with Chalfont St. Peter on Saturday, before Chalfont won the tie 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in the replay on Tuesday night. Also drawing 1-1 were Bedford Town and Cheshunt, with Town winning the replay on Tuesday’ 2-1. Waltham Abbey were also defeated 3-1 at home to Hastings United, whilst Sunday saw Romford succumb to a 2-3 home defeat to Great Wakering Rovers.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
Derek Adams, the manager of League 1 side Plymouth Argyle, has this week said that he is currently “unhappy” with the abuse that he and his players are receiving from the clubs’ fans. The club, currently experiencing a major injury crisis, are suffering their worst start to a season for 37 years. From their first 11 games, the side have drawn 4 games and lost the other 7. The club drew 1-1 away at Barnsley on Tuesday night. “I understand fans pay their money, but some of the things they say and do, I don’t find necessary” said Adams, after the sides’ 3-2 home loss to Doncaster Rovers last weekend. “It doesn’t help us as a football club, it doesn’t help the brand of the club. As manager of the football club, I’ve given them three years of very good success and I don’t really think I deserve that after the game and I don’t think the football club deserved it after the game”. He guided led the side to promotion to League One in 2017.
DEREK ADAMS
The main national competition, the FA Cup, this weekend reaches its’ third qualifying round stage. Haringey Borough host AFC Sudbury, Billericay Town host Whitehawk and Hitchin Town will entertain Hastings United. Hemel Hempstead Town will play Ramsgate, Wealdstone will go to Hungerford Town and Dartford will travel to Oxford City. Taunton Town will host the winner of the replay between St Albans City and Corinthian Casuals, and if Hendon defeat Lancing in their replay they will go to Chippenham Town. Both replays have not taken place as of time of writing. The winners of these ties go into the fourth qualifying round draw, which takes place on Monday and includes the National League Premier sides.
Other notable ties taking place include Stockport County hosting Corby Town, Kettering Town playing Hednesford Town and Bradford Park Avenue travelling to Altrincham. Gainsborough Trinity vs Blyth Spartans, York City vs St Ives Town, Warrington Town vs AFC Telford United, Hereford vs Welling United and Brightlingsea Regent vs Torquay United are other ties to be watching out for.
45
Yet another FA competition in action this week was the FA Youth Cup. Of course many Bees fans will know that Barnet defeated local rivals Boreham Wood 2-0 here at the Hive on Tuesday night. Elsewhere, Tuesday saw Leyton Orient defeat Romford 2-1, Slimbridge AFC being beaten 1-0 away by Torquay United and Lewes, of the Isthmian League Premier, defeated Dover Athletic, of the National League 4-0 away, in what looks like to be the upset of the round. On Monday, Gateshead also fell to a surprise defeat away to South Shields, losing 3-1, Guiseley defeated Harrogate Town 5-1 away, Kidderminster Harriers cruised into the next round thanks to a 3-0 victory at Coleshill Town.

Aston Villa are working with police to find out who threw a cabbage at now former manager Steve Bruce. The boss of the Championship club was not injured by the vegetable, which was thrown from the stand but was reportedly angered by the incident. The Villains sit in 12th place in the league, having won just one of their past 10 games. “A cabbage was thrown at the dugout from the stand. We are working with the club to identify the person” said a West Midlands police statement. The incident took place on Tuesday after the sides’ 3-3 home draw with Preston North End. “To say it’s disappointing is an understatement for a club like this” said Bruce, who had been in charge for two years prior to his dismissal on Wednesday. “Unfortunately, it sums up the society we are in at the moment. There’s no respect for anyone”.

LEE BURGE
When players get injured, it is normally picked up in a training session or playing a match. However, that was not the case for Coventry City goalkeeper Lee Burge. City manager Mark Robins revealed that Burge had said to him: “Sorry, I might not be fit for Tuesday’s match, I’ve been hit in the head with an ice hockey puck”. The side hosted Portsmouth on Tuesday night, losing 1-0. The 25 year old attended Coventry Blaze’s hockey match against Sheffield Steelers on Sunday but was struck by a stray shot. Burge later posted on his Twitter page: “Great night at the hockey .. won’t be going there again”. To add to the hilarity on social media, the Steelers posted on their page: “The club passes on their best wishes to Coventry City goalie Lee Burge, who took a nasty blow to the face sat in the crowd last night”.

WREXHAM AWAY POSTCARD Although this was my first opportunity to do an away day from London since moving down for uni, I thought Wrexham was too far and as it was my best friend’s birthday weekend I chickened out and got the train home to Leeds on Thursday night. I had been buzzing for this fixture ever since my Dad had been sent to Australia at short notice just before our last game against them in 2014 – something I haven’t let him forget since. On Saturday morning, me and my parents left Leeds around 11:30am and set off to Wales on the M62. We arrived in Wrexham around 2pm and found some on street parking just near the ground. We walked to the ground and entered through the away turnstiles at the back. As we walked up to the stand, I was eager to get seats similar to the ones I was in last time I was there! It was interesting to hear all the announcements made in Welsh before being repeated in English too. The teams came out just before 3 and switched ends before getting the game underway. The start of the game was fairly slow as both teams had players down inside the first 10 minutes. As the game finally got going, Wrexham started the stronger side going forward. However, we were successfully able to deal with any threat they posed. Towards the end of the second half, we started to find our feet in the game and have our fair share of shots too. However, it was Wrexham who were able to find the goal and take the lead on 42 minutes with a shot (which I thought was offside) being put into the back of the net. This led us into half time losing. At half time I enjoyed my usual hot chocolate which I will commend for being one of the best I’ve had this season. The teams came back out and we started the second half strongly with Wes Fonguck close to scoring. Though no more goals came in the game, we played the second half strongly, matching Wrexham’s efforts and I thought we were really unlucky not to have one of our shots go in. Despite last efforts from Jack Taylor and Barham, the ref blew and we lost 1-0. We walked back to the car and made our way back to Leeds. I was surprised when we arrived home about 7:30pm as I didn’t realise Wrexham was that close to us! This gave us a nice opportunity to have a Chinese and watch the football highlights before I returned to London the next day. Although it wasn’t nice to lose, I felt we put in a good performance against a top side in the league especially considering how we are hindered by injuries at the moment.

50 YEARS OF HOME GAMES
STEVE PERCY
FROM RECKLESS
This Saturday 6th October 2018 is the nearest Saturday we can get to legendary Barnet Super Fan Steve Percy’s next supporting milestone in that he has not missed a single first team home fixture (including every friendly and reserve fixture) in 50 years! Checking purely first team League and Cup fixtures only it now stands as a staggering 1,363 in a row. Just reflect on that statistic for a minute and think about it – I defy you to find a justifiable word to describe the feat! At Wrexham last weekend Steve actually clocked up his 2,000th consecutive Barnet fixture at any venue (not including Friendlies and Reserves). In fact, he has missed only one Barnet fixture at any venue since December 1972. He says “I still get mad when I think of that day. It was Boxing Day 1981 v Enfield, 12 o’clock kick off and when I phoned the ground in the morning it was off due to snow and a frozen pitch. I then had a Boxing Day doing
something else other than watch Barnet. When I read the local newspaper the game it turned out it had been played much later in the day and was arranged because both Barnet and Enfield wanted to free players of their suspensions for the up and coming money-spinning 3rd Round FA games against Brighton and Crystal Palace respectively. How on earth on a frozen pitch could it have be played later in the day as the temperature dropped? I phoned Manager Barry Fry and gave him some serious verbal abuse. Yes, it still boils my blood all these years later”. If you see him today – he is the 63-year-old chap with the very long grey hair if you don’t know – shake his hand and tell him what you think. Some will think he is mad, some will laugh, some will be in awe - but the fact is he is probably unique in footballing supporters the world over. If he isn’t then he is bloody close to being so, and I would love to meet the man or lady who is. RECKLESS - OCTOBER 2018

FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS BY DANIELE ACCURSO
Today, Barnet come up against a side who have hardly no history of having mutual players with us. My last piece in the programme against AFC Fylde had to become a review article instead of my usual “A foot in Both Camps” and today, my column nearly suffered a similar fate. With only Joe Payne playing for both us and the visitors, today’s piece will be a mixture of the two- “A foot in Both Camps” and a mini-review! Joe Payne has come through the Barnet academy and has already made a handful of appearances for the senior side at just 19-years of age. Being guided under the stewardship of academy coaches Henry Newman, Rossi Eames and most recently Michael Nelson last campaign, Payne has been playing football the ‘right’ way and is composed whilst in possession. A natural, commanding centre-back, the Enfield born defender can also fill in at left-back, a position he occupied on his senior debut last season away at Stevenage, under Martin Allen on what was his 19th birthday! Joe has captained the youth side, notably in the Middlesex Senior Cup last year, partnering Darnell Smith at the heart of defence, helping Barnet defeat Ashford Town and Enfield 1893 FC. Joe has also learned his trade whilst on loan at Solihull Moors back in September 2017. After signing on the Friday, Joe was straight into the matchday Moors squad and managed to earn himself a man-of-the-match accolade on his debut. The loan was just a month long and after appearing three times in total, Joe came back to Barnet to participate in our U-23 squad and cup matches. This season, Payne looks set to really stake a claim in the Bees’ first-team under John Still. With a back-three often being utilised, Joe may gain more playing time as the season progresses, and will be looking to build upon his three matches played already so far in this years National League campaign. 56

Following our loss to Leyton Orient, which ended a winning run of 5 matches, we came back in resilient fashion, securing a credible one-all draw against promotion chasing AFC Fylde at home. This result unfortunately was then followed by a disappointing 2-2 draw at The Hive to Havant & Waterlooville, with a 90th minute worldie free-kick from Andy Robinson earning the Hampshire outfit a point. That mini unbeaten run was soon halted however, when we made the trip to high-flying Wrexham. The Dragons are on the chase for top spot and with our own side only naming 4 substitutes on the bench out of a possible five slots available, victory was going to be a big ask. We ended up losing by a solitary goal as we battled hard but couldn’t find an equaliser.
Shaq Coulthirst, during these three matches (Fylde, Havant and Wrexham), has been our standout player by a country mile. Scoring three times in this period, the 23-year-old’s goals have earned us 2 points and has become our leading goalscorer once again this campaign, building on last season’s title of top goalscorer. It’s testament to his footballing ability that Shaq is in such fine form, considering he recently missed out on our away visit to Wrexham due to personal reasons. What must be a tough time for the striker, he has been our shining light out on the field. We all wish Shaq well during this tough time and look forward to seeing him back out on the pitch soon, doing what he does best!
Someone else who I have praised on many occasion, Mark Cousins, joined me on Love Sport Radio on Sunday evening. I frequently co-host the Non-League Fan Show between 9-10PM so to have Mark on the phone for an interview was a delight. I probed the ‘keeper on all sorts about Barnet but the one topic I had to mention was our mounting injury list. I queried why we have so many casualties, referencing potential problems with the the pitch to other conspiracy theories found on social media outlets. Mark brushed all suggestions aside and put it down simply to natural reasons. Dan Sweeney getting a calf-injury after playing every game this season to Elliot Johnson receiving a nasty tackle at Orient, all the injuries could be easily explained. Although Cousins admitted he’d never seen so many injuries all happening at a similar time, it was down to just bad luck and fatigue, which sadly happens in football. Mark has been in superb form and we’ll need him at his best today to stop a very good Solihull Moors side, who have the very impressive Adi Yussuf upfront 57
