WRITES

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome back to The Hive London after a few weeks away. I would like to extend that welcome to Hakan Hayrettin, his staff, the officials and supporters of Braintree Town for this Emirates FA Cup fixture. We have already met Braintree here this season, but there has been a few changes since then - including the manager. Hakan is a personal friend, he has played for me and worked for me and that will give the game an edge. But it shouldn’t need an edge, this is the FA Cup.

how you are on the day, and on the day we have to be good. Supporters love a cup run. If you ask any longterm supporters what some of their best games are, there’s going to be a cup game in their somewhere. Games that you never normally play, always have a little excitement.

It’s the greatest cup competition in the world, we’ll be ready for it and I know Braintree will be also. For supporters, I hope they see a proper cup tie today. We need to perform to the level we have been to get a result. What goes on in the league is nothing to do with the cup. You can probably count on two hands the teams that have won the Premier League or the old First Division that also win the FA Cup - it just doesn’t happen that often. The cup is all about

Every year there is a surprise or a shock, and those shocks are still around all these years later. Enjoy the game,

CAPTAIN’S NOTES

SKIPPER’S

NOTES

Hello everyone and welcome back to The Hive London for today’s FA Cup tie against Braintree Town! A lot has changed since we last played Braintree in early August, so I don’t really know what to expect from them. However, with it being the FA Cup, there is no pressure with the league situation - we’re not playing for three points, just to get through to the next round. We have got to make sure we are ready for whatever is thrown at us.

I love the FA Cup and I’ve had some good and bad memories in it. The highlight for me was scoring three goals across two games. Once you get through this round, there is always the chance of getting a big team which is good for everyone, or get a nice run and reach the Third Round when the giants come in.

Hopefully, tomorrow is just the beginning of a great run. Come on you Bees!

INTRODUCING BRAINTREE TOWN BRAINTREE TOWN RETURN TO NON– LEAGUE FOOTBALL’S TOP TIER, THEIR SEVENTH AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL OUTSIDE OF THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE, AFTER JUST ONE SEASON IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE’S SOUTH DIVISION. After a successful 2015/16 season saw the Essex club finish third in the Vanarama Premier and secure a place in the play–off for promotion to the Football League, despite remaining as a part–time side, their successful squad broke up over the summer of 2016 and the Essex Club struggled to rebuild the following year. A change of manager failed to turn fortunes around and the club finished 21st of 24 to be relegated – just one win adrift of safety. A period of consolidation and re–building at Cressing Road was expected under new manager Brad Quinton. But the 2011 Conference South champions exceeded all expectations last season by bouncing back at the first attempt, promoted via the end of season play–offs. 11

Following on from wining the Ryman League in 2006 and the Conference South in 2011, progress in the top flight was steady with final placings of twelfth (2011/12), ninth (2012/13) and sixth (2013/14) over the first three campaigns. Indeed, Braintree only missed out on an end of season promotion play–off place in 2014 by one win! After a quieter 2014/15, season 2015/16 saw a fine campaign end with a top–three spot and a first tilt at the end of season play–offs for a place in the Football League. Having taken the lead 1–0 in the away leg at Grimsby, an extra time 2–0 defeat in the return leg at Cressing Road saw Braintree eliminated by the eventual Promotion Final winners and miss out a Promotion Final place at Wembley. Reaching non–League football’s top flight saw the pinnacle of a long journey from local football in East Anglia. Since the 1991 the Club have progressed via the Eastern Counties League, through the ranks of both the Southern and Isthmian Leagues to secure a National League top flight place.

The Origins

Club switch

02

In 1921 the Club switched its name to Crittall Athletic to be more closely identified with their parent company. After winning Division 2A West twice, they were promoted to the Senior Division of the Border League in 1925. In 1928 they joined the Spartan League and, in 1935, were founder members of the Eastern Counties League. They won the league in its second season, but then left to join the newly–established Essex County League. The new league folded after a single season (in which Crittall were runners–up) and the Club returned to the Eastern Counties League

In 1954 the Club had a brief flirtation with professionalism, but financial problems forced them to revert to amateur status and drop back down into the Border League at the end of the 1954/55 season.

CLUB REBRAND

Second World War

After the Second World War the Club joined the Eastern Division of the London League. After finishing second in their first season, they were promoted to the Premier Division. They won the League Cup twice before returning to the Eastern Counties League in 1952.

12

CRITTALL ATHLETIC

The origins of the current club are from 1898 as Manor Works, the works team of the Crittall Window Company. The Club joined the North Essex League, winning the title in 1905/06, 1910/11 and 1911/12. In 1911 they also joined Division 2A of the Essex & Suffolk Border League, remaining in the league until 1928.

05

The Double

In 1959/60 they won the League and League Cup double. They switched to the Greater London League in 1964, and then to the Metropolitan League in 1966. They were renamed Braintree & Crittall Athletic in 1968 and in 1970 returned to the Eastern Counties League again.

SOUTHERN DIVISION

In 1981 all links with Crittall were severed and the Club was renamed Braintree F.C., before adopting their current name in 1982. They won their second Eastern Counties League title in 1983/84 and retained it the following season. In 1986/87 they won the Essex Senior Trophy and the following season they won the League Cup.

08

After initially being refused, they were allowed to switch to Division Three of the Isthmian League, although it was an effective drop of two divisions. They were promoted as runners–up in their first season, and repeated the feat the following season! After three seasons in Division One, they were promoted to the Premier Division with a third–place finish in 2000/01.

Promotion Play-Offs

Braintree reached the end of season promotion play–offs in the Isthmian League in 2005, but were beaten by Eastleigh in the semi–finals. A year later, 2006, they made no mistake winning the Isthmian League Premier Division championship, with an impressive 94 points, while conceding just 32 goals.

10

The following season 2006/07 saw them reach the Conference South play–off final, only to be beaten by Salisbury City at Stevenage. Twelve months later, 2007/08 season saw Braintree again reach the play–offs, but face defeat at Eastbourne Borough in the semi–finals.

14

Southern Division

In 1991 the Club stepped up to the Southern Division of the Southern League. In 1996 the Club were traveling all over the south of the country to fulfill their fixtures asked the FA to switch leagues in order to reduce their traveling.

11 2009/10 Season

A quieter season followed, but 2009/10 saw Braintree just miss out on a third play–off place on the last day of the season, but 2010/11 saw Braintree finally secure promotion, winning the Conference South title by seven clear points.

2010/11

12

Braintree Town started their 2010/11 championship– winning season with seven league matches unbeaten. They then moved to the top of the Blue Square Bet South table with four victories in five league matches in the autumn and moved back to the top of the table following the 4–4 draw at Staines Town in December. The cold weather disrupted progress over Christmas, but Braintree won all six matches in January to move clear at the top, while wins in February saw that lead extended to seven points. Injuries in March saw Braintree lose two of their six games, but an unbeaten run in April saw them secure the title at Easter and they were crowned champions with two games to spare.

HAKAN HAYRETTIN MANAGER

PLAYING CAREER Hayrettin began his career as an apprentice with Leyton Orient, turning professional in July 1988. He was released without breaking into the first team, joining Barnet in August 1989. In 1990, he signed for Turkish side Karsiyaka, but his Turkish parentage would have made him eligible for national service, and the prospect of war with the situation deteriorating in the Gulf, so he resigned at Barnet who later won the Conference and with it promotion to the Football League. He joined Torquay United on loan in January 1993, also playing on loan for Wycombe Wanderers that season as they too won the Conference. He also played in their FA Trophy winning side. He joined Wycombe on a free transfer in July 1993, playing 27 games, and scoring once, a memorable goal against Preston North End, helping Wycombe to a second successive promotion, via the play-offs. In August 1994 he moved to Cambridge United on a free transfer where He suffered a serious knee injury limiting his appearances for the club. He then moved on to Doncaster Rovers on a free transfer in July 1995. He never made the first team with Doncaster and was released in October 1996 due to the same serious knee injury he suffered at Cambridge at the start of the season. He joined Peterborough United, but the same serious injury forced him to retire from full-time football in 1997. He joined Watford as a youth coach, but continued his player career in non-league football with Heybridge Swifts before moving on to Hayes, Rushden & Diamonds and Harrow Borough. He played for Barnet as a trialist on 31 August 1999, making a substitute appearance against Boreham Wood, who he would spend the 1999–2000 season with. He left Boreham Wood in July 2000 to rejoin Harrow Borough, both as a player and a coaching assistant, whilst working as a stock processing manager. He had left Harrow by September 2001. MANAGERIAL CAREER Hayrettin joined Waltham Forest as manager in the 2003 close season, helping the club to win the Essex Senior Cup. In May 2006 he took over as manager of Conference South side Thurrock. On taking over at Thurrock, Hayrettin was quoted as saying that “the challenge of raising a “sleeping giant” was too much to resist”. At the start of the 2010–11 season Hayrettin left the club in October 2010. On 26 May 2011, he was appointed manager of Isthmian League Division One North side Grays Athletic, signing a two-year contract. He led the club to the play-offs in his first season in charge, but lost in the semifinal. In the 2012–13 season Hayrettin led Grays to promotion into the Isthmian League Premier Division with a club-record 102 points, only losing four league games throughout the campaign. It was announced on 5 July 2013 that Hayrettin had left Grays to join John Still’s coaching team at Conference Premier side Luton Town as first team coach . He left the club on 7 January 2016 following the appointment of Nathan Jones as manager. During his time there he helped the club win the Conference title in the first season and finishing 8th in the first season back in the Football League the following season. Hayrettin also coached the U23’s side winning the Football League final third U23’s title in their first season back in the Football League. On 27 September 2016, Hayrettin was appointed as first-team manager of National League club Braintree Town. After Braintree’s relegation at the end of 2016–17, he left the club by mutual consent on 8 May 2017. On 9 October 2018, following the departure of Brad Quinton, Hayrettin was reinstated manager of Braintree Town on a interim basis.

1983/84 New manager Chris Symes guided Braintree Town to the Eastern Counties League title in 1983-84. The title race became a two-team affair, with Braintree having games in hand and a better goal difference than leaders Wisbech Town during the closing weeks. A last minute goal gave Braintree a crucial 4-3 win at Wisbech at the end of April but that was the last match they won and the title was decided on goal difference. Chris Guy, Ivan Gooday, John Bibby and Gus Jennings scored 87 goals between them as Braintree netted 125 in the Eastern Counties League, hitting seven past Bury Town, Newmarket and Thetford and six past Stowmarket and Tiptree.

1984/85 Braintree Town retained the Eastern Counties League title in 1984-85. Chris Symes’ side finished five points ahead of runners-up Sudbury Town but didn’t clinch the title until the last week of the season after widespread postponements during the winter months led to many clubs playing a third of their Eastern Counties League games in the final six weeks. Chris Guy was leading scorer with 30 goals as Braintree netted 100 in the Eastern Counties League, losing just six matches. The Iron won 5-2 at Stowmarket and slammed four goals past seven other clubs. They also reached the Eastern Counties League Cup semi-finals but were defeated 2-1 by Histon.

1987/88 Gary Hollocks and Chris Guy scored 45 goals between them as Braintree Town went close to achieving the Eastern Counties League and Cup ‘double’ in 1987-88. The Iron defeated Watton United, Chatteris Town and Sudbury Town en route to the Eastern Counties League Cup final, beating Haverhill Rovers 1-0 after extra-time to lift the trophy for the first time in their history. They were the highest scorers in the Eastern Counties League with 96 goals but finished runners-up, three points behind champions March Town United who clinched the title with a 5-0 win at Chatteris in May. The Iron failed to gain promotion to the Southern League on ground grading.

1990/91 Gary Hollocks and Kevin Newbury scored 16 goals apiece as Braintree Town were Eastern Counties League runners-up for the fourth time in five seasons in 1990-91. The Iron won just five of their opening 14 games but soared up the table with only one defeat in their last 26 matches, finishing six points behind champions Wisbech Town. Kevin Newbury netted five times as Braintree triumphed 7-2 at Thetford Town in late April. They were accepted into the Southern League at the end of the season. The FA Cup second qualifying round defeat at home to Barnet was watched by 1,411 and appeared in the BBC’s Match of the Day ‘Road to Wembley’ feature.

1996/97 Wade Falana and Gary Bennett netted 56 goals between them as Braintree Town won promotion and were Isthmian League Cup finalists in 1996-97. Despite scoring the most goals, 99, in the Isthmian League Third Division and suffering fewest defeats, Braintree finished runners-up, one point behind champions Wealdstone. The Iron gained a record 11-1 victory at Clapton and hammered East Thurrock 7-1, also netting six goals at home to Clapton, Flackwell Heath, Hertford Town, Lewes and Wingate & Finchley. They beat Tring, Aylesbury United, Carshalton, Billericay, Bedford and Sutton in the Cup before losing 1-0 to Boreham Wood in the final.

1997/98 Gary Bennett scored a club record 57 goals as Braintree Town won promotion for the second consecutive year in 1997-98. The Isthmian League Second Division title race went to the wire and Braintree’s shock 1-0 defeat at home to bottom club Cheshunt enabled Canvey Island to pip them on goal difference after they won at relegated Tilbury. Both clubs finished on 98 points, 15 ahead of third-placed Wealdstone. The Iron were top scorers with 117 goals but had an inferior defensive record. Braintree’s only other defeat was 1-0 at home to Wealdstone and they were the only team not to lose an away match. Tony Hall’s side swept to a 7-0 win at home to Met Police.

2000/01 Robbie Reinelt was leading marksman with 37 goals as Braintree Town won promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division in 2000-01. The Iron were top scorers with 112 goals but finished third in the Isthmian League First Division behind Boreham Wood and Bedford Town. Ben Embery’s side made an inconsistent start but then scored 11 goals without reply in their two mid-season matches against Bromley before losing four out of five games in February. They recovered to lose just three of their last 17 games, annihilating Romford 10-0 at Cressing Road and clinching promotion in third place with a 3-0 victory at Barton Rovers on the final day.

2005/06 Braintree Town won the Isthmian League Premier Division title in 2005-06. The Iron lost two of their opening five games but completed an early double over Heybridge Swifts. George Borg’s side had the best defensive record, remaining unbeaten at home and losing just four away games. The 2-1 win at home to Chelmsford on Boxing Day heralded an unbeaten 23 match finish to the season. Alex Revell, Eugene Ofori and Carl Griffiths netted 43 Isthmian League goals between them. Braintree gained 94 points, finishing seven above runners-up Heybridge. They reached the FA Cup first round for the first time in their history but lost 4-1 at Shrewsbury.

2010/11 Sean Marks was top scorer as Braintree Town stormed to the Conference South title in 2010-11. Rod Stringer’s side began with a 3-0 victory at Maidenhead and were unbeaten in their opening six games before losing 2-1 at home to Dover. The Iron then won six consecutive matches without conceding a goal until their only other home defeat, 2-0 to Bromley. Following a 4-4 draw at Staines, they gained another six straight wins and remained in pole position after November. Braintree lost 2-1 at rivals Farnborough in March but eventually won the title by a seven point margin, with 89 points. They won 27 matches and lost only seven, with the best defensive record.

2015/16 Braintree Town qualified for the Conference National play-offs in 2015-16. Danny Cowley’s side lost their opening two matches but then suffered only three defeats in their next 21 games, with top scorer Michael Cheek grabbing a hat-trick in their 6-3 victory at Halifax in mid-November. The Iron took League Two high-fliers Oxford United to an FA Cup first round replay before losing 3-1. They remained in play-off contention with just one defeat in 13 matches, finishing third in the Conference National after ending the season with four wins. Despite winning the play-off semi-final first-leg 1-0 at Grimsby, they lost the home leg 2-0 after extra-time.

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS BY DANIELE ACCURSO A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS’ COMBINES MY TWO PASSIONS, HISTORY AND BARNET FC. I’LL BE TRAWLING THROUGH THE ARCHIVES TO FIND PLAYERS WHO HAVE PLAYED FOR BARNET FC AND OUR VISITORS. TODAY, WE LOOK AT THREE PLAYERS WHO HAVE PULLED ON THE FAMOUS BLACK & AMBER AND BRAINTREE TOWN STRIPS.

Justin Amaluzor

Simeon Akinola Simeon joined Barnet in January 2017 from our visitors, becoming one of many January arrivals under then caretaker duo Henry Newman and Rossi Eames. Initially, Akinola found life hard with the Bees, nearly joining Lincoln in the summer of 2017 had it not been for a deadline day failing to materialise. Since then, Akinola has showed the ability which made him one of the hottest prospects in the Conference. Hogging that left-hand side, his tricky feet and desire to cut inwards saw the 24-year-old bagging 4 goals last term. This eye for goal was prevalent when Akinola played for Braintree; across 104 appearances, the winger netted 19 times which made Simeon a crowd favourite at Cressing Road. Being deployed as a winger and forward by the Crowley brothers and then Alan Devonshire before his move down south, Akinola had done similar for Barnet, making that left midfield position his own before sustaining a long-term injury at the end of last season. 29

Andy Yiadom Another winger from Braintree who directly transferred to the Bees, Andy Yiadom is amongst a cluster of ex-Bees who’ve gone on to play in the higher tiers. After half a season with Braintree, donning the club shirt on 28 occasions, Yiadom became a permanent figure in Barnet’s firstteam. Martin Allen did sometimes play the now 26-year-old as a winger for away matches but largely the Ghanaian was found at right-back and excelled there. Yiadom was soon appointed club captain during Barnet’s first season back in the Football League and went on to make 169 appearances for the Bees. A glorious three-and-a-half year stint came to an end when a move to Championship level Barnsley beckoned in August 2016. BARNETFC.COM

Justin Amaluzor came through the Barnet academy under the guidance of Rossi Eames and Henry Newman. The young forward did occasionally break into the first-team. Over the course of his Barnet career, the Englishman featured 28 times across all competitions, netting only once in a 1-2 home defeat against Peterborough in the Football League Trophy (now called the Checkatrade Trophy). After our relegation, players had to be let go and one of them was Justin. The Southwark-born forward joined our visitors soon after on August 31th, and has already played 7 times for Braintree Town. At Cressing Road, Amaluzor will be hoping to hone his skills with the Essex based cub; standing at 6ft, Amaluzor has the ability to play both as a winger and a forward, with his frightening pace and powerful physique enabling him to pounce upon any lackluster defending. In the 7 league games Justin has featured in, starting 5 of these, The Iron have picked up 5 points, with their current points total being 7 after 16 games, so it does seem Justin is helping the team quite significantly pick up results!

Barnet returned to winning ways on Saturday after beating Solihull Moors 2-0 at The Hive courtesy of a Wes Fonguck brace. It was the hosts who had the first chance of the game on six minutes when Fonguck’s low cross failed to find a Barnet man and almost rolled into the far corner. Debutant Manny Duke tried his luck from distance two minutes later after a failed clearance from Ryan Boot fell kindly for him but his effort cannoned over. The Bees caused even more problems on 12 minutes when Fonguck fizzed in a cross from the left which found Jack Taylor in the box but his shot fell wide of the post. Soon after, Duke charged forward from the Barnet half before feeding a delightful ball into Josh Walker but Boot was on hand to race out and intercept. It was Solihull’s chance to pose a threat on 20 minutes when Adi Yussuf’s spectacular acrobatic effort from the edge of the area forced Mark Cousins to tip the ball over. A lovely back heel flick from Duku found David Tutonda who fed the ball back to the debutant, however, his effort from close range flew narrowly over the bar on the half-hour mark.

second after Tutonda found Fonguck in the box but he couldn’t find the net. However, it was the Barnet number 18 who broke the dead-lock just shy of the hour mark, burying in Walker’s rebounded effort from close range, giving the hosts a deserving lead. John Still’s men could have doubled their lead soon after when Cheye Alexander’s cross was cleared to the feet of Duku; his strike from inside the area could only find the arms of Boot. Solihull substitute Jermaine Hylton tried his luck from distance with just under 20 minutes remaining but his effort whistled wide of the post. Duku picked up the first and last booking of the game in stoppage time after taking out a Solihull man on the right flank. Barnet made sure of the points deep into added time when Jack Barham intercepted a Solihull free-kick before playing in Fonguck who twisted and turned before slotting home his second. The Bees return to league action on 27th October when they travel to Barrow as they aim to clinch their second win on the bounce.

After a first half that saw Barnet have the better of the chances, they were first to pose a threat in the

TAKING THE MIC

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER (PART 2) I told you last time about my personal memories from the Bees’ championship season of 2004-2005.

This time, it’s about the Conference title of 20142015 - and let’s get straight to the red letter day of the final match.

reached the centre circle. Some of these players may not win a title again, and I want them to enjoy every single moment possible.”

The Bees led the table by a point, and victory over Gateshead would see them home at the expense of Bristol Rovers, who were tucked in right behind.

And as a final statement: “Follow the plan. If anything goes wrong, it will be my responsibility.” In other words: know your role and carry out your role. The rest will take care of itself.

I received a call during the week of the game to say that our manager, Martin Allen, wanted to see John Strick – the other half of Sight and Sound Control at that time – and myself in his office three hours before kick-off. In we went at the allotted time, slotted in between other scheduled meetings and interviews. It was a small, confined space, with one way in and only that same way out. The door shut behind us, and the talking was straight and formal. The brief for the championship presentations of 2004-2005 centred pretty much on a list of the medal recipients as well as of the dignitaries presenting them. The rest was pretty much adlibbed. In contrast, the brief here was delivered with military precision, and as you would expect was stage-managed to perfection. There was a Plan “A” and a Plan “B”, according to the day’s outcome. “A” detailed what music to play, and when. What to say, and when. Who was to come up – in pairs – and in what order, as well as exactly how long to wait before introducing the next duo. “Do NOT introduce the next pair until they have

39

The Bees certainly took care of themselves, with Mauro Vilhete settling any nerves with his powerful header midway through the first half. The same player doubled the advantage just four minutes into the second when he pounced on a rebound from Michael Gash’s shot. Which left John and myself to execute our part of the plan. All was going smoothly until the floor manager from our live broadcaster snuck up alongside me, and asked me, off-air, to speed up the player introductions as they were taking too long. I simply answered, “No problem”, thought about it a moment, and then made the right decision. Of course, I didn’t deviate from the original plan, but amazingly – while the players and coaching staff were enjoying their lap of honour – the floor manager came up to me again to thank me for my support! Martin also came up to me at the end of the lap to shake hands and say well done for the day and the season that had just gone. Which really meant: “You may live”

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

WHAT’S THE BUZZ JOSH PALMER

With the FA Trophy preliminary round having taken place last weekend, the draw for the first qualifying round took place on Monday. The ties are set to take place next weekend. Several of our local rivals are in action in this round. Hendon will host Staines Town, Enfield Town will travel to Lowestoft Town, and Harrow Borough will go away to Biggleswade Town. Potters Bar Town are also on the road, going to Margate, with Hitchin Town hosting Hayes and Yeading. Our FA Youth Cup opponents from midweek Bishop’s Stortford will play against Hythe Town, Wingate and Finchley go down to Sittingbourne and Berkhamsted go to Chipstead. Kingstonian host Bedford Town, AFC Hornchurch host the winner of the replay between Phoenix Sports and Ramsgate, and Harlow Town travel to Whitehawk.

The draw for the FA Vase second round proper also took place on Monday. Again, there are also some of our local sides in the draw, with ties set to take place on 3rd November. Redbridge will host the winner of the replay between Sleaford Town and Peterborough Northern Star, if Enfield 1893 win their replay against Little Oakley, then they will host Leverstock Green, and Baldock Town will go to Stowmarket Town. Colney Heath face a replay against Histon, taking on Woodbridge Town if they win. Kensington Borough host Erith Town, Tring Athletic go to Wellingborough Town and Woodson Park will entertain Holbeach United.

41

After last weekends 1-0 loss away to Tranmere Rovers, the side they were promoted alongside last season, Macclesfield Town have equalled the record for the number of consecutive games without a win. The side, promoted in the summer, have lost 9 and drawn the other 4 of their opening 13 League 2 games. Their run extends to their relegation season of 2011/12 when they finished bottom of the league. Last weekends result at Prenton Park was their 36th consecutive game in the Football League where they hadn’t won. Their last win in the Football League was a home tie against Port Vale on 31st December 2011.

This week, the Court of Appeal has rejected Coventry City’s calls for a judicial review into the sale of their stadium, the Ricoh Arena. The stadium was sold to Rugby Premiership side Wasps in 2014 by the clubs owners Sisu after the side had played the 2013/14 season at Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium 34 miles from Coventry. However, Sisu claims that Coventry City Council undervalued the value of the stadium by £27 million. However, Sisu’s appeal was turned down by the courts, stating that it was due to the request having already been rejected at previous appeals. These issues arose after they revealed that they wanted to start fresh talks about extending their stay at the 32,000 capacity stadium. Having won promotion to League One last season via a League 2 playoff victory, the club only have a deal to play at the stadium until the end of the current campaign.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

Former Barnet player Keith Rowland has left his role as manager of Isthmian League Premier side Wingate and Finchley. Having taken charge of the Blues back in 2016, he guided the side to their best ever finish two seasons in a row, including a run to the playoff semifinals for the first time in the clubs history. He moved to Underhill in 2003 from Chesterfield, making 8 appearances for us before moving on to Hornchurch. Earlier on in his career, he played for the likes of AFC Bournemouth, Coventry City, West Ham United, QPR and Luton Town. He is another former Bee with connections to today’s opponents Braintree, having been their coach between 2010 and 2012. He is replaced at the Maurice Rebak Stadium by two more former Premier League players, Nicky Shorey and Glen Little.

KEITH ROWLAND

Northern Premier League Premier Division side Whitby Town have announced that long-serving chairman Graham Manser has stepped down from his role at the club. Manser took charge of the club in the late 1980’s and has guided the North Yorkshire side to many of their best records since, including winning the Northern Premier League First Division in 1998, winning the FA Vase in 1997, and the FA Trophy quarter-finals in 1998/99, among others. The club have also reportedly identified and gotten into contact with several “business people, entrepreneurs and professionals in the local area to take the club forward”. It became apparent to me that the club needed a new vision, new ideas and new vitality. I decided therefore that it was time for me to hang up my boots and stand down as chairman” said Manser. “I totally support all the new ideas that are being suggested and I must stress that I am not walking away from the club, I am just taking a back seat and I will be more than happy to assist the new chairman when requested”.

Finding himself a new club recently is former Bee Shaun Batt. The striker joined us shortly after our promotion back to League 2 in 2015, before being released at the end of the 2016/17 season, having played 27 times in black and amber, scoring once. He spent the duration of last season at Chelmsford City in the National League South, playing 24 times and also scoring on just one occasion, ironically against our opponents today Braintree Town. After his departure from the Essex side over the summer, he has now moved to the clubs’ division and county rivals East Thurrock United.

SHAUN BATT

ANDREW RADRIZZANI

Andrea Radrizzani, the owner of Championship side Leeds United, has called for the creation of a “Premier League 2”. He says this so that sides in the division can get more revenue from televised games. In the calendar year of 2017, United earned £7.5m under the EFL television deal, with the team that finishes bottom of the Premier League guaranteed at least £100m. Last season, 19 out of the sides’ 46 league games were selected for TV coverage by Sky, as well as 6 out of their 12 so far this season. Radrizzani, who took a 100% buyout of the club in May 2017, says that this puts the club at a disadvantage: “We lose money and we are creating a show that is highinterest for everybody. (Leeds are being) watched by 500,000-600,000 people live on Sky. We’re always on TV, maybe more than 20 times. It doesn’t work”.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

Last weekend we did not have a game due to our opponents, Sutton United, playing Bohemians of Ireland in the Scottish Challenge Cup. United played out a 0-0 draw with the Dublin side but were defeated on penalties, as were our local rivals Boreham Wood against Dunfermline Athletic in the last round. This week the draw for the quarterfinals of the competition has been made. The competition pits Scottish teams against clubs from England, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland. There are just two non-Scottish sides left in the competition at this stage, Bohemians, who now host East Fife, and Connah’s Quay Nomads of Wales, who travel to Queen’s Park. The other two, all Scottish, ties are Motherwell Colts (the reserve side of Motherwell) vs Ross County and Edinburgh City vs Alloa Athletic.

Yeovil Town captain Omar Sowunmi has been ruled out for the rest of the year with an ankle injury. The 22-year-old is set to be out for 12 weeks after a bad challenge with an opposition player during the Glovers’ 1-1 home draw with MK Dons on 25th September. He is currently in his fourth season at Huish Park, having signed from Ipswich Town in 2015. He also spent time on loan at Lowestoft Town and today’s opponents Braintree Town.

OMAR SOWUNMI

Kidderminster Harriers of the National League North have told their fans that the club are “well protected” when it comes to their hot prospect, Ed Williams. The young midfielder has already scored several goals this season, has played for England C, and was named National League North Player of the Month for September. His form has attracted the attention of several Football League clubs, but club chairman Colin Gordon has been quick to reassured supporters that any future deal for the player has to be right for the club. “I just want supporters to have a little bit of faith that we’re good at what we do” said Gordon. “We won’t be losing Ed Williams in the January or the summer unless everything about a deal for him is right – it’s that simple.

THE HIVE FOUNDATION

In the Community

Premier League Primary Stars On 26th September the ‘Bees in the Community’ team took at trip back to Barnet to work with the teachers at Underhill school. We delivered a teacher CPD event around invasion games and how best to deliver them. We worked in collaboration with the FA PE Unit to upskill 24 primary teachers from across the school to improve confidence and competence in their teaching of Physical Education. This is part of our ongoing partnership and work with the Premier League and the PL Primary Stars project. We look to offer primary schools cross-curricular support with a focus on developing delivery the of Physical Education in Schools. By using the impact of Barnet FC, the Premier League and the beautiful game to inspire and connect with children to get them more active and involved in sport.

If you or your school are interested in getting involved in our Premier League Primary Stars programme then you can register your interest by contacting Sian Osmond on 020-8381-3800 (Ext. 1042) or by email at sosmond@thehivefoundaiton.com.

Barnet Old Boys win the Cup The Bobs recorded their first tournament victory with an excellent set of results at the Hive on Friday 12th October. Team captain, Dave Marett marshalled the Barnet Old Boys superbly in windy conditions to win the round robin without conceding a goal. Special mentions to Bill Charge who kept 5 clean sheets and Alan Barton who scored 5 goals in as many games.

He did have a short spell at QPR too. In April 2018 he took charge at Chesterfield as Caretaker Manager but they were relegated into the National League. He left when Martin Allen took over. THE RECKLESS GUIDE

GROUND DESCRIPTION

RIVALS

The “old school” ground leaves you in no doubt what colours the home team use! Barrow have played at the site since 1909. The modest main stand built in the mid 1990’s sits on the half way line. Its appearance from the outside is a little cold and basic. While opposite is the Wilkie Terrace – not many left like this terrace. Its covered in its centre. Both end are uncovered terraces, the Crossbar End and the larger Holker Street End. A real set of four floodlight pylons grace the ground too.

Is there really anybody near enough to Barrow to be classified as a rival?

CELEBRITY WATCH Whenever I think of Barrow FC I think of the brilliant Kenny Lowe where he came from before Underhill – Barry Fry had been chasing him for a long time until he signed in 1990. There haven’t been many players over the years who you would pay to watch but Kenny was one – he lives in Australia now – great player was Kenny and has a Cider in Barnet named after him! The late great Emlyn Hughes was born here, also look out for the odd lost Blue Peter badge on the pavements as presenter Peter Purves went to school here.

OUR LAST MEETING & MEMORIES Our last meeting at Holker Street was way back in our first Conference winning season February 1990-91. Gary Bull and Roger Willis goals were not enough in a 2-4 defeat. It is a long way to Barrow but seeing a Edwin Stein goal to win up there in 1983 was worth the trip as was the Austin Hayes goal (remember him, 4 games 2 goals?) in 1985.

OVERNIGHT STAY FACTOR I have stayed over a weekend here about 30 years ago and the little b&b was lovely as were the pubs and the locals we met. I am sure it hasn’t changed. It gets a 7/10 just because it is so far away from home and was a great experience. It you are able get across to the islands of North and South Walney some great views and scenes.
