SIAN OSMOND
HEAD COACH SIAN OSMOND
SIAN OSMOND
Sian, we have the reverse fixture of the one we were supposed to play last weekend. What are your initial expectations heading into it? “It is similar to what we mentioned last week. They are really tough opposition. “They are a well organised side and have not conceded many goals at all so far this season. “It is going to be a difficult game, but it is a challenge we are hoping to rise too.” Has it helped that we have had an extra week to prepare for the same opposition? “Our preparation has been the same as it would have been throughout the season.
are they settling into the group? “The new players have brought some good energy into the group. “It has been great to be around the team and the new players have contributed to that as well. “We have bought in some senior heads who have played at this level and above which has seen them keep the standards high. “On the reflection that we have had as staff, it is a pleasure to work with this group of players. “We are just excited to see what else they can continue to do between now and the end of the season.”
“We do not have to travel and it is nice to be at home for the match instead. I think it should give us the advantage.
Sunday’s visitors have played Manchester United in the FA Cup this season and showed their quality to get to that stage of the competition. What sort of challenges might they bring to the table?
“We are back on home turf where I am hoping we can put in a good performance like we have over the last few games.”
“I think they will look to do something different tactcially, so it is going to be interesting to see that battle.
It must be difficult with the postponements affecting our consistency, but how can we return to the form we found at the start of 2022?
“They have got some really good individuals in their group who have had experience in the tiers above.
“We just need to continue to see the commitment and desire from the players that has been there all the way through the season. “With the additions we have bought in, players are starting to link up together and it has been fantastic to see. “I am hoping that we can continue to get some more positive performances out of the players, as that is what will get us results.” What has the squad selection process been like for you lately as we have had some players out injured and have also brought in some new additions? “We have had a couple of unfortunate injuries and illnesses that have popped up throughout the squad. “We have a few that will be out for the weekend which is frustrating, but our medical team have been working hard to get them back. “We are confident we have enough depth in the squad and enough quality that we should be ready to compete on Sunday.” Our new signings have been here for over a month now. How
“They are strong defensively which is a hurdle that we will have to overcome to gain three points. “I think it is going to be a good game to watch from a neutral perspective, with two good sides going at it. “I am looking forward to the game, but I know that it is going to be a challenge for us.” We have two consecutive home games in a few days. How important can our home form be to us? “It is very important and we have spoken a lot about this as a group. “We need to make The Hive London a difficult place for teams to come to. “Particularly since the turn of the new year, we have put in better performances and have made it a difficult place for teams to come. “These are another two games we need to be looking to pick up points in if we want to continue climbing the table. “We need to take advantage of the situation when we are at home and our supporters can help us achieve that.”

WHAT’S THE Buzz
WHAT’S THE Buzz Last week saw the England national team win the Arnold Clark Cup. The Lionesses finished top of the group, following their late comeback against Germany last week. This means that they finished top of the group - level on points with Spain, being ahead by +1 goal difference. In their first match, on Thursday 17th February, they drew 1-1 with Canada at the Riverside Stadium before drawing 0-0 with Spain at Norwich’s Carrow Road on Sunday 20th February. Finally, they beat Germany on Wednesday at Molineux - drawing 1-1 at half-time before a goal in the 84th minute, then the all-important third goal in the 94th minute. After years of trying to gain the arrangement, US Soccer have agreed to settle the women’s players equal pay disputes. The USA’s national association has agreed to the settlement, which will see their female players paid $22 million, as well as another $2 million towards any post-career developmental and charitable developments. Another aspect of the agreement will see both the men and women players being paid the same in the future. In a quite unfortunate but unique feat, Meikayla Moore scored a hat-trick for New Zealand vs USA – where all three of her goals were in her own net. The defender, who plays her club football with Liverpool, after spells with FC Koln and MSV Duisburg in Germany, started the match in Carson, California, last week and was unfortunate to score the first own goal in only the fifth minute of the match, only to concede her second within 60 seconds of that. She completed her unwanted hat-trick on 36 minutes, being substituted off at half-time. The USA would add to their scored with goals from Ashley Hatch on 51 minutes and Mallory Pugh in the 93rd minute for a 5-0 win. It was the USA’s 64th consecutive match unbeaten and the 16th clean sheet in a row.
WHAT’S THE Buzz
This weekend sees the Fifth Round of the FA Cup take place. The biggest tie in the round is Manchester United vs Manchester City, followed by Liverpool vs Arsenal. Other ties include an all-National League South tie between Ipswich Town and Southampton, Reading vs West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion vs Coventry United, Durham vs Birmingham City, Charlton Athletic vs Everton, and Chelsea vs Leicester City.
Next Saturday sees the final of the WSL Continental League Cup. Chelsea will take on Manchester City, after both sides won their semi-finals 3-1 vs Manchester United and 3-0 vs Tottenham Hotspur respectively at the beginning of February. The match will take place at Plough Lane, home of AFC Wimbledon, for the first time. The ground opened in late 2020.
