DEAN BRENNAN

I N T E R I M

HEAD COACH DEAN BRENNAN

Dean, how have the players come through the last week of training? “It has been a bright week in training, but the weather has been very cold! “The players attitude have been spot on again and we are really looking forward to the weekend.” Confidence must be high within the squad given the recent wins? “Yes of course it is because winning football matches breeds confidence. “We have to continue with the same work ethic and togetherness and keep taking the games as they come.” Looking ahead to Saturday we host Maidenhead United. What sort of game are you expecting? “It will be a really tough game and their manager knows the division inside out. He has done a great job every year he has been there. “They have some impressive players and a lot goalscorers from wide areas which could prove to be a real challenge. “There are no easy games in this division, and while you can look at their form and see they have lost the last three - they have had Coronavirus in the camp. “We have got to make sure our mentality is right and that we approach the match in the right manner

DEAN BRENNAN

because they are a really good side.” Maidenhead are towards the bottom of the table and are likely be fighting for every point? “Yes, they are but I do not expect them to stay where they are. “They have a couple games in hand, a good squad, and a very experienced manager. “There are no easy games, and if we start thinking that way then we will come unstuck.”

going to be used in the future.” “We want to create a togetherness which is massive and it is the only way you can have success in this business.” Maidenhead are towards the bottom of the table and are likely be fighting for every point? “The lads are just working their socks off. They are working for each other and the collective effort is great. “This business is not rocket science and some people try and reinvent the wheel.

Just a word on Alan Devonshire who was very successful as a player with West Ham United and knows this league very well. How tough will it be coming up against him?

“You must work hard and if you give the ball away, make sure you get it back. When you get it, do what you are good at and earn the right to play.”

“Alan is a top manager and good guy. He has a strong squad and always assembles a solid team.

“Our are players are doing that at the minute which is pleasing to see.

“He makes sure that his teams are very hardworking and organised so it will be a tough task on Saturday.” It was announced that Ryan De Havilland has gone out on loan to Hayes & Yeading United earlier in the week. What are the reasons for that? “I think it will be great for Ryan to go out and play some games so that he can get involved in some men’s football. “Ryan has loads of ability but just needs to learn the game a bit more. “He is only 20-years-old, and he is certainly

“I think it will be the fourth time we are actually going to be the favourites going into a game, so we have got to make sure our mentality is right.” Finally, have you got a message for our supporters who will be in attendance on Saturday? “We are looking forward to seeing them again. “They were brilliant last week away at Woking and we want to thank them for the positive support. “Hopefully, we can give them something to sing about this Saturday.”

TODAY’S LOOK AHEAD

SAM

BEARD

TODAY’S LOOK AHEAD

Sam, thanks for joining me. Having been a regular in the starting XI recently, how have you found it? “Yes, I am really enjoying it because the start to the season was tough. “I played a few games at the start of the campaign but was then out injured for four weeks. “I have had a good run of games recently and I am just looking forward to keeping the momentum going.” What has the atmosphere been like in the changing room recently? “It is always so much better after a few victories. “We had a tough start and it was hard when you are not picking up the points that you work hard to try and earn. “After a few wins we have been feeling a lot better and this has reflected in training too.” You played against Maidenhead United for the Bees at The Hive London when we beat them 2-0 last season. What do you remember from that encounter and what do you expect from them this weekend? “I remember that it was one of the first games we played with the fans back. “I think I made my debut against Maidenhead earlier in the season as well. “It is always difficult coming up against them because they are a tough team. “They are very physical and it is going to be a battle out there on Saturday afternoon. “We are all certainly ready for the challenge ahead though.”

What has it been like within the team because Dean Brennan has frequently mentioned about the togetherness within the squad? “We are a big unit and since Dean has come in, he has brought a lot of us together. “He has made playing here a lot of fun and I think you can see that we are enjoying ourselves in the performances.” From a defensive point of view, only the one clean sheet so far this season. What needs to happen for that to change? “It has been tough and I feel we have been defensively solid apart from a few small mistakes here and there. “It can be better and we need to improve on it. “We have been taking the lead and giving away a sloppy goal, but we have been fighting back and picking up results which is the main thing.” You have received a lot of praise online since coming back into the team, how does the positive reception feel? “Yes, it makes me feel good. I sometimes read through the comments on Twitter and it does make you feel a lot better. “It gives you confidence going into games and the Bees fans have been great with me.” What has it been like playing in front of the fans at this moment in time? “It is always better when you have been winning. “We have to keep making them happy and give them reasons to keep turning up. “Hope they can keep singing for us and we can keep winning for them.”

BARNET FC Supporters association BFCSA Update on the Catering Team As many of you are hopefully aware, we have recently taken on a new catering company to run the tea huts on a matchday. We are aware that tea huts are an important part of the matchday experience and unfortunately, many fans have had some disappointing catering experiences so far this season. However, we are pleased to say the Barnet FC Supporters’ Association had a meeting with the new caterers last week, facilitated by Daniel Martin (Head of the Hive Foundation) and we would like to take this opportunity to update you on the meeting. The most positive takeaway from this meeting was the fact that the caterers seemed to identify the same key problems that we did. The issues we raised as a priority in the meeting were the long wait times and quality issues, we know many supporters have faced this season. The caterers agreed that these will be addressed first. As well as improvements internally, they hope to have the use of additional outlets for food and drink to improve the wait times. Barriers are likely to be introduced to improve the queueing system for the main tea bar. Some issues with equipment are also being sorted out and once the basics are sorted, they want us to help with expanding the range of products available so hopefully they’ll be more on this soon.

Overall, it was a positive meeting with the catering team who are proactively working with the club to improve the supporters’ experience. We will, of course, continue to monitor the situation but we expect to see an improvement soon. If you have any positive or negative feedback, please let us know. We are also pleased to say that after our last update, Ephron Mason-Clark was presented with the BFCSA Player of the Month award ahead of the Torquay United game. Don’t forget to sign up to the BFCSA by heading to www. bfcsa1926.com and look out for the next Player of the Month vote coming soon.

THE OPPOSITION

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

In the beginning... The origins of senior football in Maidenhead can be traced back to October 1870 with the formation of Maidenhead Football Club, who subsequently played their first ever fixture on December 17th, 1870 against Windsor Home Park at Bond’s Meadow near Maidenhead bridge. On Thursday, February 16th 1871 the club played their first game on the York Road site against Marlow. This ground, which was then shared with the cricket club, is now officially acknowledged as the oldest continually used football ground in the world by the same club, eclipsing Northwich Victoria’s old claim by five years. Maidenhead were one of the original 15 entrants for the first ever FA Cup competition in 1871-72 and the following season reached the last four before losing to Oxford University. Maidenhead reached the quarter-finals in the next two seasons, but in 1876 did not enter, although this was the only season they failed to participate. They also entered the first ever Berks & Bucks Cup competition in 1878 winning the competition for the first time in 1895 - and the first FA Amateur Cup in 1893. The adopted club colours were Red & Black, initially worn as halved shirts, but changed to stripes in 1904.

The early years Maidenhead FC merged with three sides before the Great War. Maidenhead Excelsior were founded in 1877 and joined forces with the Red & Blacks in 1885. Maidenhead Temperance – originally known as Maidenhead Band of Hope - amalgamated with the club in 1891 and Boyne Hill FC did likewise later that year. After many seasons of playing friendlies and Cup matches, Maidenhead FC were founder members of the Southern League in 1894 but competing in Division 2 with the likes of Watford, Brentford, Fulham and Brighton proved too demanding and the club consistently struggled. Eventually in 1902, after eight years of membership, they resigned and joined both

the West Berkshire League and the Berks & Bucks League. In 1904 Maidenhead became members of the Great Western Suburban League where they remained until the outbreak of the Great War.

Spartans and Corinthians After the Great War the two remaining town clubs – Maidenhead and Maidenhead Norfolkians (founded 1884) - decided to join forces. The conflict had meant that is was unrealistic to run two senior clubs, so after a meeting in April 1919, the Norfolkians were incorporated into the Maidenhead club, and soon afterwards a kit of black and white was adopted as club colours. There was immediate success in the first season of structured league football as Maidenhead FC won the Great Western Suburban League. In August 1920 the suffix “United” was added but, more importantly, the freehold of York Road was purchased for £1,450 from William Grenfell, later to become Lord Desborough. Two years later the club joined the Spartan League and the 500 seater grandstand – at the time considered one of the best of its kind - was opened by Club President, Ernest Dunkels. Maidenhead United won the Spartan League title three times during their nineteen year stay. In 1929-30 season the club’s goal-scoring record for a season was set when Jack Palethorpe notched 65 goals in 39 games, including an individual post 1919 record of seven in one game against Wood Green Town. Jack went on to play for Sheffield Wednesday and scored in the Owls FA Cup win in 1935. In 1936, Maidenhead reached the semi-final of the FA Amateur Cup losing 4-1 to Ilford at West Ham in front of 18,000 spectators. It was during that season that the record attendance for a Maidenhead home match of 7,989 was set when Southall visited York Road in the quarter-final. During the Second World War, the club competed in the Great Western Combination.

THE OPPOSITION

In 1945 the club were founder members of the Corinthian League. After many seasons of relative mediocrity, fortunes changed under the guidance of ex-Brentford forward, Len Townsend, and then former Slough Town manager Jimmy Price, and the Magpies enjoyed the first real “purple-patch” in their history. In seven seasons between 1956 and 1963 the club won the league three times, were runners-up twice and also reached the third round of the FA Amateur Cup in 1960, losing to West Auckland at York Road in front of a post-war record attendance for a Maidenhead game of 5,597. As well as County Cup, County Benevolent Cup and League Memorial Shield successes during this period, the 1st round proper of the FA Cup was reached in 1960 (losing 5-0 away to Colchester United), 1962 (losing 3-0 at home to Wycombe Wanderers) and 1963 (losing 2-0 to Bath City at York Road).

Athenians and Isthmians In 1963, United joined the Athenian League finishing a best placed 3rd in 1965-66. In 1973, the Magpies were elected into the newly created second division of the Isthmian League. They made a concerted effort to achieve promotion to the Premier Division in 1979 and 1980 when managed by Geoff Anthony (finishing 3rd on both occasions), and then again in 1985 under Brian Caterer and Colin Lippiatt, when they finished 4th. They remained in this division until 1987 when the Club suffered relegation for the first time in its history, and the dark days were made worse with the destruction of the main grandstand by an arson attack in December 1986. It took four seasons to get out of Division Two South, and this was achieved under the guidance of Martyn Spong in 1991. An Isthmian League record of 13 straight wins at the start of 1990-91 season was the springboard to success, but the club lost out on the title to Abingdon Town on the last day of the season. During this season, however, the team established a club record of 19 league games without defeat. Following the unexpected departure of Spong to Enfield in the summer of 1991, Gary Goodwin, John Clements and then John Watt took on the manager’s job with generally moderate results and the club regularly finished in or around mid-table.

The Alan Devonshire years Following John Watt’s dismissal in the summer of 1996, the Club appointed a new management team of Martyn Busby, the former QPR and Notts County midfielder, and Alan Devonshire the former West Ham and England midfielder. Although Busby left midway through the first season, Devonshire guided United to their first Cup success since 1970 by winning the Isthmian League Full Members Cup, and this was to herald the beginning of the club’s second “purple-patch”. In each season between 1996 and 2003 Maidenhead reached a cup final, winning five and losing two. After coming agonisingly close to promotion in 1997-98 season, two years later in 1999-2000 United made another concerted effort to reach the Isthmian League Premier Division. Despite the odd hiccup, on Thursday, 4th May, a 1-0 home win against Champions Croydon guaranteed promotion. A new 700 capacity covered enclosure at the Canal end of the ground was completed in May 2000 together with new terracing on the railway side. In the summer of 2002 Chairman Roger Coombs announced that he would step down at the end of 2002-03 season and, in April 2003, Manager Alan Devonshire followed suit by announcing intention to leave the club at the season’s end. Maidenhead finished a best ever 10th in the league and Devonshire’s final game in charge (his 349th) saw the Magpies regain the County Cup by thrashing Aylesbury United 4-1 at Chesham.

Conference South and a return to the Southern The summer of 2003 saw new manager John Dreyer have to bring in virtually a new squad of players and, despite an uninspiring start, United secured Conference South football on the last day of the season. This was the highest level the club had played at since the Southern League days in the late nineteenth century. In 2004-05 season, an indifferent start saw Dreyer replaced by Dennis Greene but the club still finished in a relegation position only to be reprieved following the demise of Hornchurch. Following a somewhat dismal start to the 2005-06 season Greene was dismissed and replaced by Carl Taylor. Taylor was briefed with the task of establishing the club in the Conference South, but proved incapable of this and the club were to finish adrift at the bottom of the table. However, in November 2005, a financial crisis loomed. A desperate situation was resolved when the members voted to wind up the existing member’s club, and ownership was transferred to a new Limited Company set up by sponsors Pharmalink Consulting. Taylor was given the backing of the board to continue as manager as the club returned to the Southern League after a 102 year absence, but after a mediocre start to the season Taylor left the club. Former Yeading manager Johnson Hippolyte, known as “Drax”, was appointed and had immediate success guiding the club to their first FA Cup First Round proper appearance in 35 years. The Magpies eventually lost 2-0 at home to Stafford Rangers in a replay in front of 1,934 people. Improvement in their league form took a little longer and in January 2007 the club occupied 18th place. However an amazing run of 12 wins from the final 14 league games saw the Magpies finish fourth and qualify for the play offs. The winning run then continued in the semi final at Kings Lynn with a 1-0 triumph and, in the final played four days later, the Magpies beat league runners-up Team Bath 1-0 at Twerton Park, Bath to return to the Conference South just a year after relegation.

Back in Conference South... Since returning to Conference South in 2007-08 season, Maidenhead have finished the season in 17th, 6th, 16th, 19th and 20th place. The 1st round proper of the FA Cup was reached in 2007 but the side were comprehensively defeated at Horsham by 4-1 in front of a 3,379 crowd. Maidenhead won the County Cup for the 20th time in 2010 defeating Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 at Marlow. In the summer of 2011, new perimeter railings were installed around the pitch surround and the shelter at the Bell Street end painted as the club endeavoured to improve their York Road home where they have now played for 141 years. A very promising 2011-12 pre-season campaign saw the club win all nine of their friendly matches scoring 31 goals and included victories against a Notts County XI and Hayes & Yeading United. This season also saw the club reach the 1st round proper of the FA Cup where they met Aldershot Town from League 2. This was the first time in their history that Maidenhead had been drawn at home to a league club in the competition proper. In front of a crowd of 2,281, the Magpies took the lead in the eighth minute through Anthony Thomas before the visitors secured a draw with a goal from Michael Rankine twelve minutes from the end. The Shots won the replay at the Recreation Ground ten days later by 2-0. On the field, the league season ended in bitter disappointment as despite a 4-3 win over Eastleigh thanks to Paul Semakula’s goal in the third minute of injury time, the club finished in 20th place and was relegated back to the Southern Premier. However, the demise of Kettering Town saw the Magpies reprieved and they will remain members of Conference South in 2012/13 season. The match at Sutton United on 25th August 2012 was manager Johnson “Drax” Hippolyte’s 300th game in charge, a total only exceeded by Len Townsend (473 games) and Alan Devonshire (349).

MANAGER

ALAN DEVONSHIRE Alan returned to York Road in May 2015 for his second spell as United manager, leading to great success, winning the Vanarama National League South and Berks and Bucks Senior Cup in 2017. Led the Magpies to a top half finish in their inaugural Vanarama National League season in 2018, winning the April Manager of the month award. This echoed his earlier time in charge of the Magpies, his first senior managerial post, over seven seasons from 1996-2003, which saw an historic promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division, and the end of a twentyseven-year silverware drought with wins in the Isthmian League Full Members Cup and four Berks & Bucks Senior Cup triumphs. Since leaving United in 2003, Alan’s managerial

career has gone from strength to strength. Firstly, taking Hampton & Richmond Borough from the Isthmian League to the brink of the National League, then defying the odds to not only consolidate Braintree Town’s place in the National League but also to mount a push towards the play offs. On his return to United his team brought Port Vale back to York Road for an FA Cup 1st Round replay in November 2015 after an unforgettable draw at Vale Park. A final league position of 7th in 2016 served notice of a tilt at promotion and after topping the table in August the Magpies held on to beat off the challenge of Ebbsfleet to win the title on the final day of the season, securing the Vanarama National League South Manager of the season award for Alan.

WOKING FC AWAY POSTCARD A visit to the Laithwaite Community Stadium was our last game before lockdown in 2020, so Saturday felt like a trip down memory lane. My Dad travelled down to London on the Friday night which turned out to be a great call due to the settled snow in Leeds by Saturday morning! On the day of the game, he and I set off to Waterloo to meet Jeanette and Cranners but when we got there, we found the pub we had planned to go to has been shut for two years! We jumped on a train to Clapham Junction instead and started our day out there. After a few drinks and lunch, we got the train to Woking and conveniently there was a pub just by the station! We then got on a bus down to the ground due to the freezing cold weather which gave us time to catch up with other away fans in the Snooker Club before going into the ground. I’m a big fan of Woking’s away stand so we carefully chose our seats ready for kick-off. The start of the game was far from ideal when just two minutes in, Woking took the lead through a Tom McNerney header. We didn’t let this affect us though and we pushed forward having numerous chances ourselves. About 20 minutes later, Adam Marriott put the ball into the back of the net, but it was flagged offside. However, he kept pushing forward and he got his reward five minutes later with a great header from a Rob Hall corner, which sent us into half-time level. We’d brought a decent number of fans, which gave me a nice opportunity to catch up with a few and also get a much needed hot chocolate at the break! As the second half got underway, Woking got themselves into the game and forced Aston Oxborough into some brilliant saves from. The support from the away end remained noisy and Serhat Tasdemir was introduced with the hope of finding a winner. Thankfully, it came for us in the 90th minute when Marriott scored again, this time a tap in from a Tasdemir cross. The away end was absolutely buzzing and the celebrations only got louder when the referee blew the full-time whistle. The players and staff made their way over and got a great reception too. A group of us walked back to the pub near the station for a post-match analysis and I was very grateful to get the seat next to the fire and finally warm myself up! As the evening went on, we made the trip back to Waterloo and decided we’d continue the night in High Barnet so we could see Reckless play. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the pub we were informed that they had played the night before and we’d missed him! We stuck about though and had a massive portion of fish and chips. Eventually, my Dad and I decided to brave the cold again and took the bus home which didn’t take too long. Despite the cold conditions, the last minute winner and a lovely day out definitely made the trip worth it!

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH

maidenhead united Barnet FC have an impressive record against Maidenhead United, who they have met on 10 occasions. They have never lost to the Magpies in a Vanarama National League match, having won five times, and drawn once away. The Bees have also only conceded one goal in those six games, which was when they won 4-1 away in December 2019. Barnet first played Maidenhead United in the 1963/64 season, when the Corinthian League, in which the Magpies had been competing in, merged with the Athenian League in which the Bees played in. The first game was at Underhill on 30 November 1963. They played one another again the following season (so there were four Athenian League meetings with the Bees winning once, the Magpies twice and one draw), but then the Bees joined the Southern League, and the two teams didn’t meet again in a competitive game for almost 54 years. They have now met on six further occasions in the past three seasons in the Vanarama National League.

(Xander McBurnie), Anthony Wordsworth (Michael Petrasso), Ephron Mason-Clark, Tomi Adeloye (Josh Walker). Dan Sparkes, who was at The Hive London for two seasons between 2018 and 2020 is now at Maidenhead and has twice played for the Magpies against the Bees. He has also played three times for Braintree against Barnet. Charlee Adams, another ex-Bee, joined the Magpies this season: he played against Maidenhead for Barnet on three occasions. Bernard Mensah, who was on loan with the Bees from Watford, also played for Maidenhead on loan from Bristol Rovers and represented the Magpies twice against the Bees in 2019/20. Dave Tarpey signed for Barnet from the Magpies in August 2017 but picked up a long-term injury in his second game at The Hive London. His opportunities following his recovering were restricted and he played once for the Bees against his former club.

Barnet’s home record against Maidenhead United in all games (National League and Athenian League) is four wins and one defeat. They have scored nine goals and conceded five. In all games (both leagues and home and away) against the Magpies, winger Roy Drake has scored three times for Barnet, while Roger Figg, Josh Walker and Simeon Akinola have each scored twice. Ephron Mason-Clark has played in five games, more than any other Barnet player. Maidenhead’s only goal in the Vanarama National League against the Bees was scored by Josh Kelly, who is also their current top scorer in all matches. The highest attendance at a Vanarama National League match between the two sides is 1,569 at The Hive London in September 2018. The largest at York Road is 1,491, later the same season. The most recent encounter between the two teams was the penultimate game of last season. It ended in a 2-0 victory for the Bees at The Hive London. The goals came from Harry Taylor, his only goal for the club so far, and Anthony Wordsworth. The Bees team was: Adam Parkes, Lee Vaughan, Ben Richards-Everton, Ben Nugent, Sam Beard, Themis Kefalas, Harry Taylor, Sam Skeffington

CLASSIC ENCOUNTER WITH

THE MAGPIES

The Bees came from behind to beat Maidenhead United 4-1 in a Vanarama National League fixture on 21st December 2019. It was an early Christmas present for the large contingent of Bees’ fans who made the trip to York Road. An early opportunity fell to the Bees, when a move involving Cheye Alexander, Jack Taylor, Elliot Johnson, Simeon Akinola and David Tutonda saw Josh Walker thwarted inside the six-yard box. On 12 minutes, another Barnet attack culminated with a pass across the Magpies’ box by Wes Fonguck that evaded everyone. Maidenhead’s first good chance of the game was a shot fired well wide of the far post. Then Jack Taylor had a good effort from a free-kick 30-yards out, but it went just over the angle of post and crossbar. The deadlock was broken in the 27th minute when a long ball forward by the Magpies fell nicely for Josh Kelly, who dinked the ball over the onrushing Scott Loach from about 12-yards to put the home side ahead.

of the box as Jack Taylor dummied it to allow Alexander to score with a low shot into the corner of the net. Maidenhead responded with a shot from Jake Cassidy that went very close, but Barnet also had further half chances. Maidenhead saw a glimmer of light near the end when Tutonda was adjudged to have pushed Cassidy as a lofty cross sailed into the box. However, Loach, diving to his right, saved the penalty from Danny Whitehall. A further goal from the Bees three minutes into injury time was the icing on the cake. Akinola met Jack Taylor’s cross from the right and calmly placed his shot inside the righthand post to make it four. Teams Bees: Scott Loach, Cheye Alexander, Callum Reynolds, Harry Taylor, Elliot Johnson, Simeon Akinola (Ronnie Edwards), James Dunne, Jack Taylor, Wes Fonguck (Charlee Adams), David Tutonda, Josh Walker (Mauro Vilhete). Maidenhead United: Chris Dunn, Remy Clerima, Alan Massey, Joe Ellul, Rene Steer, Ryheem Sheckleford, Ryan Upward (Shamir Fenelon), James Comley, Josh Smile (Bernard Mensah), Jake Cassidy, Josh Kelly (Danny Whitehall). Attendance: 1,625.

Eight minutes later, Walker cut the ball back from the byline for James Dunne, with the defence calling for a foul. Dunne fired a shot towards goal from just inside the box, only for the Magpies’ Ryan Upward to handle. Akinola slotted home the penalty to equalise. On 42 minutes, the Bees went ahead when Fonguck chested down a chip into the box and laid the ball off for Tutonda, who fired home past Chris Dunn in the Maidenhead goal from an acute angle. The Bees doubled their lead just two minutes into the second half. Fonguck stroked the ball across the edge CLASSIC ENCOUNTER WITH the magpies

CURRENTLY Adam Marriott’s brace against Woking last Saturday was the first time a Bees player had scored two in a game for more than a year. The previous occasion was on 24th October 2020, when Michael Petrasso scored a brace against Leiston in the FA Cup. The last time in a league game was a fortnight earlier when JJ Hooper achieved that feat in a match against Notts County. The Bees come into today’s game on the back of four wins in their latest five matches. Maidenhead have achieved two wins in their last five in the league but have not won away since the first game of the season. Ephron Mason-Cark’s penalty in the most recent home game (against Torquay United) was the first time the Bees had scored from the spot since Michael Petrasso did so, also against the Gulls, on 22nd May 2021. The goal saw Ephron become the 12th player to score for Barnet in the league this season. Wrexham are the only Vanarama National League side to have seen goals scored by more players in league games (14 players). Seven players have scored for today’s opponents Maidenhead in the league this season. Finally, happy birthday to Mitch Brundle, who is 27 today. Mitch is the only player to have started every competitive game for the Bees this season, and indeed has played every minute. Prior to today, Mitch has played 265 games in the Vanarama National League, Premier Division (scoring 31 goals), plus seven matches in League Two for Cheltenham Town and FA Cup and FA Trophy ties.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz

Former Bees manager Tim Flowers has found himself a new club. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton, Swindon Town, Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, Stockport County and Coventry City goalkeeper left The Hive London back in March. Having previously managed Stafford Rangers, Northampton Town and Solihull Moors, the former England international has been appointed at Stratford Town. This marks the lowest level that Flowers has ever played or managed at but is looking to help the Bards progress in the Southern League Premier Division Central, as they currently sit in 15th place.

Another manager departing their position this week is Ian Culverhouse, who has parted company with King’s Lynn Town. The former Tottenham Hotspur, Norwich City, Swindon Town, Kingstonian and Brighton & Hove Albion defender was in his second spell at the club, and had last year guided the side to promotion to the top tier of non-league football, but this season the side have only won two out of their 17 league games, sitting in 22nd place. Their league form is only worsened by Dover Athletic, who have drawn four and lost 13, and had a 12-point deduction.

The Third Round of the FA Trophy has been drawn, with all Vanarama National League sides now in action against the last 64 teams remaining in the competition. The Bees have yet again been drawn at home to Boreham Wood, a repeat of our FA Cup Fourth Qualifying round tie. It will also mean that we face the Wood three times in 16 days, also playing them on Boxing Day and January 2nd. Other all National League ties include Stockport County vs Grimsby Town, Notts County v Altrincham, Dover Athletic vs Bromley and Yeovil Town vs Woking. Elsewhere, Chesterfield host the winner of the replay between Ashton United and Guiseley, FC Halifax Town are away to either Bradford Park Avenue or Marine FC, Solihull Moors are at AFC Fylde, Eastleigh host Enfield Town, Aldershot entertain Kingstonian, Southend United host our opponents at this stage last year Dorking Wanderers, Dagenham & Redbridge face the long trip to Cornwall against Truro City, Torquay United are at Tonbridge Angels, Weymouth at Hungerford Town, Wealdstone at Needham Market, and Maidenhead United at home to Maidstone United. There are six step eight clubs still remaining in the competition, with at least one guaranteed to reach the fourth round, with Larkhall Athletic and AFC Totton both being drawn together. There is also another Hertfordshire derby, with Cheshunt being drawn at home to Bishop’s Stortford.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

FA Cup winning manager John Sillett has unfortunately passed away this week, aged 85. Sillett was manager of Coventry City between 1986 and 1990 and guided the Sky Blues to their FA Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur in 1987. His playing career saw him feature over 100 times for Chelsea, where he won the First Division in 1955, before playing almost 150 times for Coventry. His managerial post at City was held either side of spells as boss at Hereford United. He also won the 1964 Third Division with Coventry as a player.

Another former Bee moving managerial roles this week is Michael Nelson, who has departed his role as Blyth Spartans manager. Nelson had previously played for Bury and Northampton Town, before moves to Norwich City and Scunthorpe United, where he featured a combined 28 times in the Championship. Spells in the Scottish Premiership with Kilmarnock and Hibernian were interrupted by several months at Bradford City. After spending time at Cambridge United, he featured for the Bees for three seasons between 2015 and 2018, playing 104 times and scoring three goals. He subsequently spent short spells at both Chesterfield and Gateshead, before joining Blyth in February 2020, becoming their playermanager. Blyth are currently in 20th place out of 22 teams in the National League North, after winning three out of their fifteen league fixtures so far this season.

MATCH Report

MATCH Report THE BEES LEFT IT LATE TO SECURE ALL THREE POINTS AT THE LAITHWAITE COMMUNITY STADIUM – WINNING 2-1 AGAINST WOKING FC. The hosts took the lead in the 2nd minute when Max Kretzschmar lofted the ball into the box from a free-kick which was cleared only as far as Joe McNerney. The 31-year-old headed down into the ground as the ball bounced off the surface and in off the far post from 10-yards out. Dean Brennan’s side pushed forward in search of an equaliser, with Adam Marriott’s shot into the bottom left corner from an offside position the closest the Bees came in the next 20 minutes. In the 27th minute Marriott looked to cause more problems when he picked up the ball in the centre of the park and drove towards goal before having his deflected strike saved by Smith’s legs. The Bees levelled the score in the 28th minute as Rob Hall’s curling corner found Marriott in the centre of the box who rose highest to head the ball off the underside of the crossbar and over the line. Alan Dowson’s team came close to scoring on the stroke of half-time when Jamar Loza was played through on goal. Aston Oxborough raced off his line to jump on the ball and force the forward to stumble and kick it out of play for a goal kick. The second period began evenly, with the Bees enjoying the first real chance of the half when Hall’s bouncing free-kick was almost turned in by Marriott at the far post, before being caught by Smith. Oxborough was called into action again in the 58th minute when Inih Effiong found space behind the Bees’ backline. The Woking forward dropped a shoulder and looked to find the bottom corner but was denied by the ‘keeper who spread himself well to make the save.

The hosts failed to create anything in the following minutes but showed intent in the 74th minute when Loza found space down the left flank before playing a teasing ball across the face of goal to Effiong who couldn’t get the finishing touch. Tarryn Allarakhia was next up to test the Bees’ stopper in the 79th minute when he found space from 20-yards out to strike a powerful effort down the centre of the goal and into Oxborough’s gloves. The Bees won it late on as Serhat Tasdemir’s free-kick across goal missed everyone but Adam Marriott who was there to turn the ball home from close-range and secure three points on the road.

A-Z OF FORMER BARNET PLAYERS

PAOLO vernazza Paolo Vernazza was regarded as a very promising young player coming through the ranks at Arsenal, but he never quite reached the expectations. The Islington-born midfielder went to the FIFA Youth World Cup in 1999 with the likes of Ashley Cole and Peter Crouch after impressing in the Arsenal academy for an extended period of time. Paolo did make seven appearances for his boyhood club, but his progress as a player was majorly hindered during a home robbery incident in 2001 where he and his reserve teammate Andrew Douglas were stabbed. For Arsenal he played in the Premier League as well as in Europe under one of football’s most highly respected managers, Arsene Wenger. Although he was young and promising, something wasn’t clicking at Arsenal. This led to loan spells at Ipswich Town and Portsmouth. In his first game back from his loan move, Paolo came off the bench and made an impact scoring against Coventry at Highbury, it was pure elation for the Islington boy. This didn’t lead to any momentum building and his appearances slowly came to a stop. Vernazza moved to Watford FC in 2000, where he spent three-and-a-half years, making 96 appearances and scoring twice. Then in 2004 he moved to Rotherham United. His stay was unsuccessful and was sent out on loan to the Bees. The midfielder initially joined Barnet on loan in November, with the deal running until New Year’s Day. That same day, Vernazza had the remaining months of his Rotherham contract cancelled by mutual consent. He was then free to sign fresh forms with Barnet and played in the Club’s League Two defeat to Notts County on the Monday. After his days at Underhill were over, Vernazza dropped out the Football League for good where he represented the likes of Dagenham & Redbridge, Weymouth FC, Woking FC and Grays Athletic.
