Good afternoon everybody and a very warm welcome back to The Hive London. I would like to extend that welcome to Harry Wheeler, his staff, the officials and supporters of Maidstone United for this Vanarama National League fixture. Today’s game will be a good one. Maidstone are really battling the elements at the moment, but I’m sure as with a lot of teams that come to our great stadium, they will come here and raise their game. We have to make sure that we are up for it, I’m sure we will be but as I always say, it’s going to be another tough fixture.

you have a disappointing result in the league, you have another game next week - the cup is not like that. All our focus, effort, organisation, discipline and commitment right now is focused on three points against Maidstone United.

I thought that the team played well on Tuesday night against Salford, but we had one or two individuals who were not right at it. The team ethic has been very good and we have to maintain that. It would be nice to go into the Emirates FA Cup next week with a win behind us, but I think you have to put them into two separate pockets. If

Hello everyone and welcome back to The Hive London for today’s league game against Maidstone United! I was happy to make my first league appearance for the club at The Hive on Tuesday, even if it was a bit of a different circumstance to that of Saturday at Barrow. We did really well in the first half and took a deserved lead, but bad game management on our part to come in at 1-1 and then concede a goal straight after the break. It was frustrating in the end because I think

we were the better team on the day. Maidstone United have had quite a lot of changes since the start of the season, from management right through to playing staff. That can sometimes work in their favour, especially having new boys coming in wanting to impress.

It won’t be easy today, we have to make sure we are fully prepared to go out and win the game. Come on you Bees!

1897 Kent League

The club returned to the Kent League for the 2001/2002 season and played their home games at Central Park in Sittingbourne. There were several highlights during the campaign, including their ﬁrst ever match in the FA Vase in which the Stones defeated Hellenic League Carterton Town 4-1. Maidstone became league champions on the last day of the season when they defeated Deal Town at the Charles Sports Ground. The following week the Stones completed the Kent League and Cup double after defeating Whitstable Town 2-0 at Folkestone Invicta’s Cheriton Road.

2002/2003 Kent League Champions

The Stones were crowned Kent League champions in 2006 for the second time and secured the league and cup double, with the title being won on the last day of the season with a resounding 4-1 win away to Sevenoaks Town. The Kent League Cup was also won again with a 4-1 hammering of VCD Athletic at Folkestone Invicta’s Cheriton Road ground. Promotion to Ryman League Division One South was conﬁrmed at the end of the season. The Stones repeated their championship victory for a second successive season when, yet again on the last day of the campaign, they travelled to Walton Casuals and secured the Ryman League Division One South title with a 2-1 win.

Maidstone United Football Club was founded in 1897. Following the demise of the Football League side in 1992, the club was reborn as Maidstone Invicta and joined the Kent County League Division Four for the 1993/94 season. They won the title at the first attempt and also picked up the West Kent Challenge Shield and the Tunbridge Wells Charity Cup. Following a restructuring of the league, they were promoted to Division Two and won the title again as well as lifting the Kent Junior Cup. After three seasons in Division One, the Stones finally earned promotion to the Kent County League Premier Division with former player turned manager Jason Lillis at the helm. Lillis has a place in Stones’ history as the only player to appear in Maidstone United’s first and last games in the Football League.

FA Cup

The highlight of the 2002/2003 season was the club’s return to the FA Cup. With the added attraction of being chosen by the BBC for The Road To Cardiﬀ, the Stones started their cup trail at Ramsgate and on the way defeated Tonbridge Angels and Newport (IoW) before losing to Boreham Wood in the Second Qualifying Round in front of a home crowd of 937. In the league the club led the table for almost the entire season but following the late resignation of Faversham Town, the League Management Committee decided the title would be awarded to the club with the highest points earned per match average. The Stones lost the league title by 0.14 points! Silverware was forthcoming though, as the club won the Kent Senior Trophy for the ﬁrst time with a 3-0 victory over Cray Wanderers at Chatham Town FC.

Ryman League

Following another promotion the club spent ﬁve years in the Ryman League Premier Division with little in the way of playing success. An eight-year groundshare agreement with Sittingbourne ended and for two seasons the Stones moved to The Homelands in Ashford.

The Chairman

The Chairman of 19 years, Paul Bowden-Brown, stepped down in October 2010 and with the club in dire financial straits Oliver Ash and Terry Casey took over as joint chairman and owners. The 2010/11 season ended in disappointment as the Stones were relegated for the first time in their history to Ryman League Division One South but off the field the exciting stadium plans were taking shape.

Construction work started during the 2011/12 season. Although the Stones missed out on the play-oﬀs at the end of that campaign, the £2.6million Gallagher Stadium was completed and 2,226 watched ﬁrst match between Maidstone and Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday 14 July.

The first season back in the county town ended in a massive celebration when the Stones won promotion to the Ryman Premier Division beating Faversham Town 3-0 in the play-off final. At the end of the 2013/14 campaign Maidstone missed out on a play-off place by two points but silverware came in the form of the Robert Dyas League Cup.

The following season was one to remember; the Stones made it to the second round proper of the FA Cup, beating League Two Stevenage Town in a ﬁrst round replay in front of BT Sport cameras and a capacity crowd. The season ended in style with the Ryman Premier Division title and with it promotion to the Vanarama National League South.

During the 2015/16 season the club again qualified for the first round proper of the FA Cup where they narrowly lost 1-0 at home to League Two side Yeovil Town in front of a record-breaking crowd of 2,811. After finishing third in the league the Stones faced Ebbsfleet United in the Promotion Final at Stonebridge Road. The match finished 2-2 after extra time and Maidstone won the resulting penalty shoot-out 4-3 to win promotion to the Vanarama National League.

2015/2016 11 Gallagher Stadium

The first season back in non-league’s top flight ended with a 14th place finish and a further expansion of the Gallagher Stadium. The opening of The Genco Stand last March saw capacity rise to 4,200 and just shy of that figure watched the fifth anniversary game against Crystal Palace last summer.

Kent Senior Cup

Last season saw a 19th place ﬁnish in the league, with silverware coming in the Kent Senior Cup after a penalty shootout win over Folkestone Invicta.

Grant, who joined the Stones on loan at the end of October, came through the ranks at Brighton & Hove Albion before dropping into non league. After spells at Hayes & Yeading, Farnborough and Bognor Regis, the 24-year-old signed for Boreham Wood, proving himself to be one of the best goalkeepers in the National League as the Wood made the promotion final last season. The stopper then signed for Lincoln City in the summer, making six appearances so far this season for the Imps.

Aged just 17, Josh went on to play a full season in the first team for Burnham, winning the players’ and manager’s player of the year awards at the end of the season. His impressive form for The Ramblers saw Harry Wheeler bring him to Billericay in the 2018 close season, and the Stones boss has moved again to move the 6’3” stopper to the Gallagher Stadium.

A product of Braintree Town’s youth system, Josh featured on the bench for the Iron as a 16-year-old before joining Burnham Ramblers in the Essex Senior League in the summer of 2017.

George signed for the Stones in June 2018. The left-back won the National League with Cheltenham Town during 2015/16 season.

Initially signed on loan from Wycombe Wanderers, Will made a permanent switch in summer 2018.

He went on to have a brief spell at Sutton United and was most recently with hometown club Ashford United.

The former Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday centrehalf joined the Chairboys in summer 2016 after impressing on trial, making his debut in the EFL Cup clash with Bristol City.

Alex began his career with National League side Leyton Orient. In 2014 Bolton brought him to their academy. He made his debut for the Whites and was consistently on the verge of the first team, making three appearances before being released.

The 28-year-old signed for the Stones in September 2016 and made his debut in a Kent Senior Cup match against Bromley.

Alex signed for QPR a couple of months later and was a regular for the under-23s. The 22-year-old joined the Stones on loan last season, making a permanent switch this summer.

Twumasi joined Peterborough United in 2010 on a free transfer. Other clubs include Northampton Town, Yeovil Town and Newport County.

He started his playing career with Chelsea, going through the youth set-up before signing pro in 2007.

The 21-year-old left back joined the Stones on a three month deal from the SkyBet Championship club Blackburn Rovers in September.

Jack joined the Stones last month from Ebbsfleet United.

Jack joined on the back of a successful loan spell at Ireland Premier Division club Derry City at the end of last season. He has also made one first team appearance for his parent club, playing against Coventry City in last season’s EFL Cup.

A youth player at West Ham, Powell moved on to Millwall where he came into first team contention following a successful loan spell at Concord Rangers. Jack made a total of ten first team appearances for The Lions and also spent time with Braintree on a temporary basis. After his release from Millwall in 2016, the 24-year-old was signed by The Fleet. A mainstay at Stonebridge Road, he clocked up more than 100 appearances for the club.

Jack signed for the Stones from Witham Town towards the end of the 2014/15 season. He worked his way through the youth set-up at Southend United, joining the club at the age of 12 and reaching the first-team squad when he was 18. Following a change of management at Roots Hall, the versatile midfielder went on loan to Ryman North side Soham Town before signing for Chelmsford City in August 2013. A year later, Thurrock boss Mark Stimson offered him a deal before releasing him in the October to play with Witham.

Billericay Town’s captain joined the Stones on an initial one-month loan deal in mid-September, before making a permanent switch this month. An experienced central midfield-holding player, he is also comfortable in the centre-back role. Simon has extensive experience having played at 13 different league clubs, including Leeds United and Plymouth Argyle. National League experience was gained at Guiseley and Sutton United.

Ollie came through the ranks at Charlton Athletic, earning himself a pro deal in 2013.

Michael, who came through the youth ranks to captain Crystal Palace’s under-23 side, signed for the Stones in February 2018.

While with the senior side, he had loan spells at the Gillingham, Dagenham & Redbridge and Braintree Town.

After impressing during the latter stages of the campaign, he put pen to paper on a new deal with the club for the 2018/19 season.

After leaving The Valley in January 2017, he headed back to Priestfield – making four appearances in that time.

The 26-year-old striker arrived at the Gallagher Stadium last month on a deal until the end of the season.

The winger signed from Boreham Wood, after initially joining on loan from the Hertfordshire club.

After being released by Millwall he joined Ryman South Three Bridges, playing against the Stones for the Sussex outfit in the 2012/13 season. As the Stones made their way up the non league pyramid, so did Elliott, facing Maidstone for Lewes (Ryman Premier), Eastbourne (National South), Torquay and Dagenham (both National League).

His career started at West Ham Academy and he made his Hammers debut four years ago against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup. He also represented England up to under-19 level, including 14 appearances for the under-17s. A short spell with Coventry followed his time at West Ham, before he was snapped up by Leyton Orient in 2015. From there he had a year-long spell with hometown side Bromley in 2016, netting an impressive 12 times from midfield. That form saw him make his move into the Football League with Stevenage. Blair was made team captain last month.

Loan signing who joined the Stones earlier this month from League Two Bury.

A Welsh under 21 international, Jake’s impressive goalscoring exploits for Llandudno Junction earned him a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he made 25 first team appearances.

After coming through the ranks at FC Zurich, Omotayo secured a move to England with Whitehawk, then in the National South. Eleven goals in 16 games for the Hawks was not enough to lead them to safety, but it was enough to earn Gold a move to Bury in the summer of 2018.

Successive loan moves to Tranmere, Notts County and Southend preceded a permanent transfer to Oldham in 2015. Jake then joined Guiseley, with his form in the 2016-17 National League season triggering a move to Hartlepool in the summer of 2017.

The 24-year-old has made eight appearances so far this season, with his one goal for the Shakers coming on his debut against Yeovil in August.

HARRY WHEELER MANAGER

HARRY WAS APPOINTED MANAGER IN SEPTEMBER. The 30-year-old played for Stevenage, Hampton & Richmond and his hometown club St Albans City. He’d later go on to be The Saints manager after three years as the club’s head coach. Last season with Billericay, he led the club to a hat trick of success with the Isthmian Premier championship, alongside the league and county cups. A vastly-experienced coach, he started his badges when he was 17 and passed his UEFA A Licence by the time he was 23 – the youngest person to do so.

After completing his UEFA A Licence in 2011, Tristan joined Conference Premier club Hayes and Yeading United, where he has had two spells as caretaker manager, steering the club to National League safety on both occasions. In 2017, he joined National League side Welling as joint caretaker manager – going on to become Director of Football and set up the Wings successful football academy. At the start of the 2018/19 season, he joined Billericay Town but left to link up with Harry at the Gallagher Stadium.

1972/73 Maidstone United won the Southern League First Division (South) title in 1972-73. Phil Basey was signed from Crawley and formed a lethal striking partnership with Micky Angel. The Stones hammered Winchester City 6-1 and slammed ﬁve goals past Andover, Crawley, Dunstable and Trowbridge at London Road. The Southern League First Division (South) title race went to the ﬁnal day when Maidstone won 3-0 at Bognor Regis and championship rivals Tonbridge lost 2-1 at Bideford. Ernie Morgan’s side won 25 of their 42 Southern League games, establishing a post-war unbeaten club record in the process, scoring 90 goals as they gained 62 points.

1974/75 Maidstone United reached the FA Cup second round proper for the first time in the club’s history in 1974-75. They beat Eastbourne Town 5-3 in the first qualifying round, then trounced Hastings United 6-0 at London Road in the second qualifying round and Medway 7-0 in the third qualifying round before a 2-0 win at Hendon. Goals by Alan Morton and Jim McVeigh gave Maidstone an exciting 2-2 first round draw at Southern League rivals Nuneaton Borough. Phil Basey and Peter Tough scored to give the Stones a 2-0 victory in the replay at London Road. John Maggs made several fine saves as Maidstone lost 3-1 at Swindon Town in the second round.

1978/79 Maidstone United took Charlton Athletic to an FA Cup third round replay in 1978-79. Glenn Aitken’s free-kick gave Maidstone a 1-0 first round win at home to Wycombe Wanderers, then Kenny Hill’s strike clinched a 1-0 second round victory over Exeter City, the first time the Stones had beaten Football League opposition in the competition. Maidstone took a dramatic early lead through Glenn Coupland in their third round match at Charlton Athletic but Mike Flanagan equalised in the second half before both he and team-mate Derek Hales were sent off for fighting each other! Charlton triumphed 2-1 in the replay watched by 10,591 at London Road.

1980/81 Maidstone United reached the FA Cup third round again in 1980-81. Frank Ovard’s goal gave Maidstone a 1-1 first round draw at Kettering Town. The replay finished goalless after extra-time, then two goals by Andy Woon plus Mark Newson’s penalty gave Maidstone a 3-1 win in the second replay at London Road on an evening when play was held up for 25 minutes by a floodlight failure. Following two 0-0 draws against Gillingham in the second round, with Dickie Guy making several fine saves, Mark Newson and Frank Ovard scored to give Maidstone a 2-0 second replay win at Gillingham. The Stones lost 4-2 at home to Exeter City in the third round.

1982/83 Maidstone United finished Conference runners-up in 1982-83. Bill Williams’ side slammed six goals past Bangor City, Scarborough and Trowbridge at London Road, also scoring five times at home to Kettering and Worcester. The Conference title was fiercely contested, with Maidstone, Enfield and Wealdstone alternating in the leading positions throughout the season. Captained by Kenny Hill, Maidstone won 25 of their 42 Conference games and ‘Player of the Year’ John Bartley was the highest scorer in the Conference with 36 goals. The title race went to the final day, with rivals Enfield pipping Maidstone to the championship by a single point.

1983/84 Maidstone United won the Conference title for the first time in 1983-84. The Stones had finished runners-up the previous campaign, pipping Nuneaton Borough by one point on the last day of the season after Nuneaton had led the table since late January. Bill Williams’ side clinched the title with a 6-0 win at home to Telford United watched by 2,502. John Bartley was top scorer with 27 goals, while goalkeeper Derek Richardson, Jon Moore, Mark Newson, Brian Thompson, Nigel Donn and former England winger Peter Taylor were also important figures. Maidstone also beat Exeter and Worcester in the FA Cup before a 4-1 third round defeat at Darlington.

1986/87 Maidstone United reached the FA Cup third round for the fourth time in 1986-87. John Glover’s goal gave Maidstone a 1-1 first round draw at Welling United, then George Torrance, Steve Butler, Steve Hatter and Steve Galloway scored in the Stones’ 4-1 replay victory at London Road. Steve Galloway’s strike gave Maidstone a 1-0 win at home to Cambridge United to set up a third round visit to Watford. The Stones lost 3-1 at their top-flight opponents. Bill Williams’ side also beat Wealdstone 2-1, Altrincham 2-0 and Corby 3-0 en route to the FA Trophy quarter-finals, losing 1-0 at Burton Albion in a replay. Maidstone finished third in the Conference.

1988/89 Maidstone United won the Conference title for the second time in 1988-89. Ground-sharing Dartford’s Watling Street, Bill Williams’ side made a six-match unbeaten start, with Mark Gall grabbing a hat-trick at Cheltenham on the opening day and Steve Butler emulating his feat in a 7-2 win over Altrincham. Gall scored another treble in a 5-0 victory over Yeovil and Maidstone took Reading to an FA Cup second round replay. The Stones won 25 of their 40 matches, gaining 84 points and ﬁnishing eight ahead of runners-up Kettering. Steve Butler and Mark Gall netted 52 goals between them. Trio Mark Beeney, Les Berry and Mark Golley were ever-present.

1989/90 Maidstone United qualified for the Fourth Division play-offs in 1989-90. The Stones began life in the Football League with a 1-0 defeat at Peterborough. Steve Butler grabbed a hat-trick in their 4-1 victory at home to Scarborough a week later but Maidstone won just two of their opening ten matches. Keith Peacock’s side soared up the table with only two defeats in 15 games, including a 2-1 win at rivals Gillingham on Boxing Day. Steve Butler and Mark Gall scored 39 goals between them as Maidstone qualified for the play-offs in fifth position, netting five goals in their final two home games. The Stones lost 3-1 on aggregate to Cambridge United.

2015/16 Maidstone United were Conference South play-off winners in 2015-16. ALEX JONES FA CUP QUIZ MAIDSTONE I remember my first journey to Maidstone. It was in the winter of 1991, but the coach was turned around after some quite unfathomable fog. The game was rearranged for January, and resulted in a 1-1 draw. Mark Carter scored, but Spike was also denied one of the most obvious penalties ever. In the return at Underhill, a few months later, a late Valentine present was a 3-2 victory for the Bees. Carter one again scored, along with Willis and Showler. However many years, and a lot of history has passed for both clubs since. Two brand new grounds for example, Watling Street I wrote of our games against Dartford a few years ago, but one of the managers during their turbulent time was Graham Carr, the father of comedian Alan. It is not recorded if the Chatty Man ever turned up at Watling Street.

MORE ON MAIDSTONE I like the town of Maidstone a lot, and my second visit was to see cricket. Kent entertained Surrey, if I remember correctly. Mote Park has not been used by the county since 2005, with some concerns as to the quality of the pitch as I recall. That is a shame as it was an amphitheatre, with an impressive view. Nowadays Kent venture from Canterbury to Beckenham, and the rhododendron bushes of Royal Tunbridge Wells.

MORE ON THE CUP Two other sides are making their First appearance in the First Round. Haringey Borough will entertain Wimbledon at Coles Park Stadium. This tiny ground is one of the most basic I have visited in the London area and will have comfortably its’ highest ever attendance on Friday night. Metropolitan Police will probably host their first ever BBC Radio Wales correspondent when they entertain Newport, who are doing well in League 2, and the boys from Dave Parade cannot have envisaged opponents as different as Tottenham last season. My first visit to Imber Court had nothing to do with football. Surrey were home in the first ever season of the Twenty20 competition. The facilities struggled to cope with such a large crowd. This draw comes at a crucial time for the Police side. Restructuring of the Pyramid system means they now compete in the Premier Division South of the Southern Division. This has necessitated a great deal more travelling and match day expenses. Long-serving manager Jim Cooper departed Jason Hippolyte is their attractively named striker. The rule requiring playing staff to be members of the constabulary has long since been removed, as the Commissioner stopped them from having the required time off. When I visited Imber Court to see Hendon play, Sir Trevor Brooking’s brother had a role on the board. Thankfully Hendon won the game so I was able to send the comedy tweet “Hendon fought the law and the law…… lost”

Georgie turned 22 on the same day as the details of the tragedy were revealed. She will graduate next summer, and the City of Leicester, where she studies is in mourning. I visited Filbert Street, and then the King Power Stadium, when it was named after Walkers Crisps, never anticipating that they would enjoy the spectacular season when they triumphed in the Premier League. Mr Srivaddhanaprabha made that possible. May he and his friends rest in peace.

Many Bees fans won’t remember Alfie Pavey and for the few who do, his stint at the club didn’t exactly fill them with excitement. Since then however Alfie has gone from strength to strength. Pavey started his footballing career with Maidstone’s academy where he scored over 300 goals goals in his 3-years at the club, including 124 in his last season there (according to Wikipedia). That eye for goal saw him called up by The Stones for their second round FA Trophy match against FC Halifax where he was an unused substitute. That scintillating record saw Millwall snap him on a two-year academy scholarship in May 2013. Having not made a senior appearance for the Lions at this point, Pavey joined Barnet in September 2014 on a one-month loan, making 3 appearances during his time with us at the tender age of 18. After that, Alfie had loan spells with Aldershot Town, Bromley, Hampton & Richmond Borough and Dartford, scoring six goals in total across those loans. Millwall released the one-time capped England C international at the end of the 2016/17 season and he soon joined Welling but only played twice. On 14th August 2017, The Englishman returned to Dartford and finally found his stride; scoring 22-goals in 38 league games, Pavey was given the Vanarama National League South Player Of The Season Award. His exploits earned him a move to Havant & Waterlooville this summer where he is already on 4 league goals this season at the time of writing.

Dan SWEENEY Dan Sweeney has had a mixed experience here at The Hive since his move from Maidstone United but he now looks completely at home! Arriving in January 2017 from our visitors under then caretaker duo Rossi Eames and Henry Newman, Sweeney was identified as a promising player by club legend Paul Fairclough. A physically imposing payer, the Englishman found game time hard to come by for his first-year with us, with his traits not quite during the passing, possession style of football. As a result Sweeney was loaned it to Hampton and Richmond Borough in October 2017 where he played five times. However under Mark McGhee and Graham Westley, Sweeney was fully incorporated back into the side where he was being deployed as a centre-back. The arrival of Martin Allen saw ‘Sweens’ return to central midfield and be given the captain’s armband, shining in those final games of last season. The 6 ft 3 versatile midfielder is being used by John Still at centre-back currently due to a number of injuries, and his ability to roam forward with the ball has been a useful asset for the Bees when we’ve been penned in. Sweeney has showed those capabilities throughout his career; after being released by AFC Wimbledon, he made an impressive a total 124 appearances for Kingstonian between March 2013 and October 2015, showing his ability to impose himself on matches with his physique. Following that spell, a move to Dulwich Hamlet occurred before he moved to Maidstone United in December 2015, then in the sixth-tier of English football. At Maidstone United, Dan made played 48 times across all competitions scoring 3 times.

Barnet fall to a 3-1 defeat at home to promotion chasers Salford on a freezing Tuesday night at The Hive. The Bees took the lead on 42 minutes when Wes Fonguck buried home his sixth of the season. However, two Salford goals either side of half-time from Rory Gaffney and Thomas Walker respectively turned the game on it’s head.

Their advantage was widened soon after though when a Scott Wiseman cross was smashed home by Shelton.

Mark Shelton sealed the win for the visitors just past the hour mark to inflict defeat in their first ever trip to The Hive.

On 83 minutes, substitute Dave Tarpey could have pulled one back when his bending effort deflected out for a corner.

The first chance of the game fell Salford’s way as Walker’s low ball across goal found Adam Rooney but he cannoned his shot over.

Moments later, Elliott Johnson tried to beat Neal at the near post but the Salford ‘keeper got down low to maintain the two-goal advantage.

The Bees hit back though when David Tutonda found Jack Taylor who was positioned just inside the area but his low strike was comfortable enough for Chris Neal.

Despite late pressure from Barnet, The Ammies saw out the win, ending The Bees’ recent run of form.

Soon after, Rooney saw his shot from close range saved by Mark Cousins and when Rory Gaffney was on hand to tap home the rebound, his effort fell wide.

The former then went into the referee’s book after bringing down Fonguck mid-way inside the Salford half.

John Still’s men are back in action on Saturday when they welcome Maidstone United to The Hive.

With 10 minutes on the clock, Fonguck had the goal in his sight. The midfielder found space from just outside the area before unleashing a delightful curling effort which floated narrowly past the top right corner. The Bees continued to dominate as Josh Walker’s acrobatic volley was well saved by Neal four minutes before Manny Duku let fly from distance which was also kept out by the ‘keeper. Barnet did receive their just rewards three minutes before the break when Fonguck added to his impressive goal tally of the season. Cheye Alexander’s cross fell to The Bees’ top scorer who fired in from the edge of the box. However, their lead was short-lived as Gaffney latched onto a cross, volleying home from close range to level the scores going into the break. Salford began the second period just how they finished the last. With only seconds on the clock, Rooney’s shot was blocked by a Barnet defender, falling to Walker who rustled the net from inside the area. Their lead could have been extended on 57 minutes when Dean Whitehead’s header forced Cousins into a save; The Bees’ goalkeeper tipping the ball over the bar.

YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS! Every summer, when the new Barnet kit is launched, you can be assured it will elicit comment and feedback from supporters Too bright. Too dark. No stripes. Stripes too wide. Etcetera. I personally like the Bees’ current kit; the subtlety of the honeycomb pattern which works up close by adding a bit of texture and design but blends into the background from a short distance. The “Loaded” shirt of 1997-1998 frequently seems to pop up in conversation as being held in general disdain for its tricolour bar effect, but it can’t remotely hold a candle to the latest offering modelled by Bedale AFC of the North Riding Football League. Quite simply, the Yorkshire team’s kit is designed to replicate the look of a hot dog – yes, I said HOT DOG - with the meat as a central panel running north to south, the bun either side and taking in the sleeves, and with ketchup and mustard interlaced for full effect.

Bristol Rovers, our FA Cup first round opponents next week, have this week fined striker Stefan Payne. This was due to an incident last Saturday where Payne made an inappropriate gesture to Rovers fans at the end of their 1-0 loss away to Barnsley. “I accept that my actions on Saturday were wrong” said the 27-year-old in a statement. “I apologise”. “We by no stretch excuse Stefan’s actions following the final whistle at Oakwell” said Pirates manager Darrell Clarke. “A good number of Rovers supporters made the long trip to Barnsley and we as a team are grateful for that support”. The side currently sit in 20th place going into today’s round of fixtures.

Stoke City winger James McClean has said that he will again not wear a poppy on his shirt for remembrance day next weekend. The 29-year-old, signed for the Potters over the summer, is from the Northern Irish city of Derry, wherein 1972, 13 protestors were killed by the British Army during Bloody Sunday. He repeated his opinion that he knew that many people would not agree with his decision, but again asked that it be respected. The side host Middlesbrough today before travelling to Nottingham Forest next Saturday. “The club is proud of its close connections with the armed forces and have also invited members of the armed forces to join our remembrance at the Middlesbrough fixture” said the club in a statement. “However, we recognise that the poppy means different things to different individuals and communities and (like the Royal British Legion) do not believe that anybody should be forced or even pressured to wear the poppy against their free will”. The club also said that all other players will be wearing a poppy.

National League North side Nuneaton Borough have this week announced the closure of their academy side due to the uncertainty of the clubs’ future, in regards to its’ finances. This comes after Boro’ failed to pay many of its’ players and staff over recent weeks, with the academy side also struggling with a large injury crisis. The issues arose from the club not having an owner. Previous owner Lee Thorn took charge of the club back in 2014, but has recently come out and said that he has not been in charge of the club since June, as he no longer owns Boro Leisure Limited, the holding company of the club, and he has not been involved with the club since. Legal documents at Companies House show that Thorn did indeed stop being a director or a person with significant control on 1st August, with there being no other directors or shareholders listed. Norman Smurthwaite, the owner and chairman of League Two side Port Vale bought Boro’s Liberty Way ground from Thorn earlier this year.

With the first qualifying round having taken place last weekend, this Monday saw the draw for the second qualifying round of the FA Trophy, and there are several local teams involved. As a reward for overcoming Sittingbourne, Wingate and Finchley will now travel to the winning of the replay between Tiverton Town and Hartley Witney. Greenwich Borough will host Bishop’s Stortford, Harlow Town travel to Carshalton Athletic and Potters Bar Town go to Horsham. Meanwhile, the winner of the replay between Chesham United and Haringey Borough will travel to the winner of the replay between Worthing and Burgess Hill Town. Also involved in this round are Hendon, who entertain Biggleswade Town, Enfield Town, who will be travelling to Basingstoke Town and Royston Town, who host Thame United, with ties set to take place next weekend.

Today is the second round proper of the FA Vase, where there are yet more of our local sides taking part in order to try and claim their place in the last 64 of the competition. Firstly is Enfield FC 1893, who take on Spartan South Midlands Premier side Leverstock Green, whilst Redbridge take on Peterborough Northern Star, and Woodson Park, based in Ware, will host Holbeach United. Baldock Town travel to Stowmarket Town, Kensington Borough host Erith Town in a London derby and Southall take on Chatham Town. These ties are all due to be played today.

Isthmian League Premier side AFC Hornchurch have said that they have applied to the FA to change their name, removing the letter ‘A’ from their title. The east London sides’ new name will be Hornchurch FC, the name of the original team that were liquidated at the end of the 2004/05 season. The new club, nicknamed the Urchins, will have the new name to use by the start of next season. The new side were formed less than a week after the closure of the previous one and were not allowed to use the same name as the previous club for legal and footballing reason. When formed, the FA placed the side in the Essex Senior League, at level 9 of the English football pyramid, three levels below where the original club had been playing in the Conference South.

Another piece of news out of the Isthmian League this week is Romford receiving planning permission for their new ground. The Boro’ currently compete in the Isthmian North and have had a nomadic club since their reformation in 1992. For three seasons they played at the Hornchurch Stadium, before moving to Rush Green in 1995, the home of Ford United, now Redbridge FC. This lasted less than a year, with the side then moving to the Sungate Ground, home of the now defunct club Colliers Row FC. This spell proved unsuccessful to the many problems with the ground, with the side finally moving back to Rush Green, with Redbridge having vacated it to groundshare the Cricklefield Stadium in Ilford with Barkingside. In 2008, they moved to the Mill Field Ground, home of Aveley. They then shared with Thurrock at Ship Lane until this summer, when the side folded, this season groundsharing with East Thurrock United at Rookery Hill. They have successfully been granted planning permission at Westlands Playing Fields.

This week Hungerford Town wore a one-off blue kit for their game away at Woking on Tuesday night. The National League South side wore it to support World Fertility Day, which took place yesterday. “We’re really fortunate here at Hungerford Town FC to do our small part to promote what’s become a difficult topic for many to speak about” said manager Ian Herring. “Our support of our friends at IVF Babble is helping spread the word so to speak, and is bringing an awareness to the people, men and women, in football and sport in general”. The side usual wear a home kit of white shirts and black shorts and an away shirt of all red. This special edition kit will feature a blue shirt with white shorts.

“Everything that’s gone on is on me and I’ll take it” said Rangers manager Steven Gerrard. Having scored 186 times in his 710 appearances for Liverpool, as well as 21 goals in 114 England appearances and more for MLS side LA Galaxy, Gerrard stepped into his first managerial role when he joined the Gers in June. “I pick the XI, I brought in 14 players. It’s a disappointed dressing room but I’m here to take responsibility - my players, my tactics, my gameplan. If there are any fingers to be pointed let them point at me”. The side got knocked out of the League Cup by Aberdeen at the semi-final stage last week and are 5th in the Premiership, 8 points of the top spot. In the Europa League, they qualified to the group stage courtesy of victories in all four qualifying rounds, and currently, top their group after three games. The side have not played yet in the FA Cup.

Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen have announced that the neck injury sustained by Andrew Considine against Rangers is “not as serious as first thought”. The Dons took on the Gers at Hampden Park last Sunday in the Scottish League Cup semi-final, and walked away with a 1-0 victory, thanks to a 79th-minute goal from Lewis Ferguson. This result will see them take on defending champions Celtic in next months’ final. Considine has been with the club for 19 years, having joined the academy in 1999, aged just 12. He made his debut in 2004 and has gone on to make 436 appearances for the Reds, scoring 29 times. During the semi-final. Club medical staff had to treat the defender on the pitch for eight minutes after a bad collision during a heavy aerial challenge.

BARROW AWAY POSTCARD Although I live in the North, there are many remote areas to which I have never been. Barrow was one of these. In fact, I only found out it was in North via Barnet’s twitter. In the course of my enquires, I was given the information that it was on the coast. This meant a beach; chips, ice-cream and penny machines – I was now buzzing for Barrow away. Luckily, I was back in Leeds for the start of the week meaning I could leave at about 10am with my parents. We took the scenic route through the Yorkshire Dales although I missed it all since I slept all the way! We arrived in Barrow around 1pm which gave us plenty of time to go to the seaside beforehand! We drove across a bridge to Walney Island and it’s safe to say I was a bit disappointed as we arrived to a bleak and dead place with a load of stones leading to a cold sea with a wind farm! It was not quite as I expected. We headed to the ground and were inside by 2:30pm where we got some food. My vegetarian mum was particularly impressed as she was so hungry they gave her some onions in a bun for free! As the 70 Barnet fans filtered through the small turnstile, 3pm got closer and the game got underway. Only 16 minutes in, we took the lead when Duku scored finishing a cross from Walker. We continued the game well and exactly 20 minutes later we doubled our lead with Wes Fonguck scoring yet another loving goal leading us into half time 2-0 up. It was 8 degrees in Barrow so my half time hot chocolate was very needed. In fact, it was the best hot chocolate I’ve had all season and only a pound so I made my Dad get us another just as the second half got underway. 8 minutes into the second half, we had a large shout for a penalty when Duku was brought down but somehow the ref didn’t give it. On 62 minutes, it was great to see Callum Reynolds return after being out injured and 8 minutes later it was lovely for Tarpey to join him on the pitch too. We finished the game quite strongly with Robson and Sweeney dealing well with any danger from the opposition whilst Tarpey and Barham put up a good fight going forward and the game finished 2-0. We walked back to the car and made our way back to Leeds where I finally got the good northern portion of chips I had been after all day! Although I spent the day there in all honesty I’m still not sure where Barrow is!
