SIAN OSMOND

HEAD COACH SIAN OSMOND

SIAN OSMOND

Sian, we are back at The Hive London for the second time in less than a week. This time we host MK Dons Women in the league - what are your initial expectations of the match?

“We need to take the attacking threat from that game into this one.

“We know that it is going to be a tough game and they have had some really good results lately.

“We generated a lot of opportunities and punished the opposition through our clinical finishing in front of goal.

“They have had an upturn in form, so we are expecting a slightly different game to the one we faced earlier in the season.

“We need to do the same moving forward and know that we have the capability to score goals.”

“MK Dons have had a few changes within the squad and will provide a challenge from the wide positions. “We are aware of some of the threats they have got going forward but we are confident that we have the ability to get the three points.” It is another quick turnaround and this league often tests the resilience of the players. How is preparation going for it? “The staff have been absolutely fantastic in the build up to this game and by Sunday night we already had analysis prepared. “Training was good and it is important that we have had the opportunity to prepare both tactically and physically for it.” We beat MK Dons 5-1 at Stadium MK earlier on in the season. What are we looking to take from that into this Wednesday as we were very clinical that evening?

How can we find our positive home form again as we have fallen to defeat in our last two games at The Hive London? “Midweek games always add something special to proceedings and the players are looking forward to putting things right. “We are hoping to bounce back with a better performance and we know what we need to do to improve.” Dan Carlton made the bench against Bridgwater United on Sunday. How far away is she from a full 90 minutes? “We are pleased with the progress that Dan Carlton has made and she has worked really hard with the medical staff who have been fantastic. “We are really excited to get her back on the pitch soon but only time will tell when she will be ready for a full match.”

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz Last weekend saw the fifth round of the FA Cup take place. The biggest win in the round was claimed by Chelsea who beat Leicester City 7-0 at Kingsmeadow in front of a crowd of 2,723. Arsenal took on Liverpool at Prenton Park and won 4-0, whilst Manchester City won 4-1 in their derby match against rivals Manchester United at the Leigh Sports Village, with an attendance of 2,335, coming from behind to win. Chelsea would prove to be the only of the eight home sides to win in normal time, with Ipswich Town winning at home thanks to a 4-2 win on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Southampton. The Tractor Girls are the lowest ranked side to make the quarter-finals. Also through to the next round are West Ham United, who won 1-0 in the 105th minute against Reading at the Madejski Stadium and Coventry United who beat West-Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion 4-2 away. Everton won 2-0 at Charlton Athletic, whilst Birmingham City won 1-0 away at Durham. England captain Steph Houghton is set to undergo surgery on her Achilles, leaving her on the sidelines for an extended period of time. The Manchester City defender was ruled out by the injury in September, although the injury made a recurrence after her return in January. It is unclear whether the 33-year-old will be available for selection for this summer’s Euro 2022 tournament.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

Elsewhere in the international game, the USA won their fifth SheBelieves cup and their third in succession. A 0-0 draw with Czech Republic was followed up by 5-0 wins over both New Zealand and Iceland, leaving them top of the table with seven points and no goals conceded, with Iceland in second place, Czech Republic in third and New Zealand in bottom place.

Also, France won the tournament that they hosted – the Tournoi de France. They won all three of their games, 5-0 vs Finland, 2-1 vs Brazil and 3-1 vs the Netherlands. This left them top of the group on nine points, with the Netherlands in second with four, Brazil in third place with two points and Finland last with one point. This was the second edition of the tournament, with the first being held in 2020. France also won that one. There was also supposed to be a 2021 edition, however this was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

After the recent Arnold Cup international tournament, there are concerns about attendances, ahead of the Euro 2022 tournament taking place in England this summer. This comes after the Arnold Clark Cup attracted an average crowd of 6,300 at the six different matches. This figure was distorted by a crowd of 8,700 watching England vs Canada at Middlesbrough, on the same day Storm Eunice hit, and 14,284 watching England draw with Spain at Carrow Road. Alongside this, England beat Germany with 13,463 in attendance, therefore showing that the fixtures between the other sides had very low attendances - including just 249 at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium for Germany vs Spain.
