HEAD COACH SIAN OSMOND

SIAN OSMOND

Sian, disappointment in our last fixture, but what have we learned from it that we will take into tonight’s game? “It gave us an opportunity to look at ourselves in terms of what we are doing defensively. “We got exploited in defensive areas on a number of occasions, so that is something that we reviewed together as a team. “We are hoping to put things right against Southampton.” How helpful has it been to have a week-and-a-half that to train and prepare for this one? “It has been great because we have had a couple of additional opportunities to train. “We managed to get ourselves a friendly last week and we are really pleased with that. “We have got to have a look at a few things too, so hopefully we are as best prepared as we can to come up against very tough opposition.” There are four games left of the season, what are we looking to get out them? “We said all along that we want to finish really strong. “We know that we have got some tough opposition between now and the end of the season. “These are games that we want to compete in against quality opposition. “We said that we want to match, if not better, what we did first half of the year and show how far we have come as a group. “It has been a journey this season and we are really eager to finish on a high.” How important is it to be coming up against the top-quality teams in the final few games of the season, as we look to prepare for the next campaign?

Southampton have showed their quality throughout the season and their league position suggests that. What are you expecting from the match? “Southampton are a fantastic side and they have got some great individuals within the group. “They are very well organised side who have shown everyone how good they are this year. “They have had a really busy schedule lately and I think at some point it is going to take its toll. “Southampton have shown some great consistency over the course of the season though. “We are hoping that the work that we have done, and have put in ourselves should put us in a positive place to try and get something out of the game.” Do you think that the Southampton game provides a great opportunity to bounce back from the Portsmouth result? “I would hope so but like any game, it is brand new. “What happened in previous results against the same opposition is regardless. “We are hoping that we can put in the best performance that we know we are capable of. “We will definitely make things difficult for them and give ourselves an opportunity to gain some more points.” What is the squad looking like as we know that Parker Dunn took a knock against Portsmouth? “Parker has been okay and has been back into training which has been great. “We have had a few players pick up knocks during the week, which has been unfortunate. “Once reviewed again in the build-up to the game, we should be in a pretty good place.”

“It is an opportunity to really showcase what we are about and what we can do.

Southampton will be our final fixture under the lights this season, how much are you looking forward to it?

“These are games that we should always be excited to be involved in, playing against some of the best teams in the league.

“We always love a night game, particularly out on the surface that will be on.

“Our final few fixtures should attract fans and excite players. “It is a great advert for the women’s game when we do the play these tough opponents. “We are hoping that we can put in some good performances and pick up a few points between now and then.”

“It is always nice because it brings that special feeling to the match. “As a team we are all looking forward to it and are hoping that we can come away with the win for ourselves and our supporters.”

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz Last weekend saw the four quarter-final ties take place. Arsenal beat Coventry United 4-0 at Meadow Park, with Manchester City seeing off Everton by the same scoreline at the Academy Stadium. Chelsea overcame Birmingham City 5-0 at Kingsmeadow, in front of a crowd of 1,869, whilst West Ham United were the only away side that won – beating National League South side Ipswich Town 1-0 at the Goldstar Ground in Felixstowe. It has also been announced in the last week by the FA that the prize money for the FA Cup will increase 10-fold for next season’s edition of the tournament. The total prize money for this was set at £300,000, with the winning club only receiving £25,000 of that. The men’s winners receive £1.8 million for the same achievement. The new, revised, plans will see a new prizemoney pot of £3 million. Having originally been given the green light to go ahead on 8th April, the World Cup qualifier between Ukraine and Scotland has been postponed until June. This follows a similar situation for the men’s side, who had their World Cup playoff semi-final tie postponed until the summer as well. The previous fixture between the two sides took place in the qualifying group B in November, when the sides drew 1-1 at Hampden Park.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz This week sees the first legs of the quarter-finals of the Champions League take place. Last night saw Bayern Munich take on Paris Saint Germain, and Real Madrid host Barcelona. Tonight sees Juventus play seven-time winners Olympique Lyonnais, and Arsenal take on VfL Wolfsburg - winners of the competition in 2013 and 2014. Manchester United have beaten Birmingham City 4-1 in the final of the WSL Academy Cup. The tournament, open to WSL club’s academy sides and players under the age of 21, saw it’s final played at St George’s Park last week. Karna Solskjaer, the daughter of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, provided two assists for Alyssa Aherne to set up the first two goals for her side - playing the first hour of the match with her father in attendance. Tonight sees Aberdeen play at the men’s Pittodrie Stadium for the first time ever in their history, as they host Rangers in a SWPL tie. The side normally play their matches at the Balmoral Stadium, home of men’s side Cover Rangers - having previously played at the club’s training ground. Aberdeen are in 5th place (out of the 10 teams), whilst Rangers are in second place, 10 points ahead of Celtic, and one point behind Glasgow City, having played two fewer games than both of their city rivals.
