DEAN BRENNAN

I N T E R I M

HEAD COACH DEAN BRENNAN

Dean, thanks for joining me. You must be looking forward to being back in front of the fans at The Hive London once again? “It is a credit to both clubs that the game is going ahead this weekend and we are itching to get back into it and play games back in front of our supporters.” Altrincham have lost their last four, and I am sure you are expecting them to be eager to put that right and get a positive result against us. How can we prevent that? “They have a really good front line with top wingers. “Altrincham are a very well coached team with fullbacks that fly forward. “They are a good side and I know they have lost their last four, but they have come up against some top opposition in Stockport County and Wrexham. “Despite losing, they created chances in the game. They are a good side who are well-coached. “We have not won for three games either, so it is important we remember that. “We have got to keep, stay on the front foot and try and make them defend as much as we can. “I want to improve on where we were last week, especially in an attacking sense. This can be achieved with the quality we have got.

DEAN BRENNAN

“It should be a good game to watch and hopefully we will come out with a victory. “ You touched on it there, how do we improve on our performances in an attacking sense? “We need everybody available for selection. Ephron Mason-Clark and Daniel Powell are huge players for us and we need to get more games out of them. “Ephron is suspended so will not be available. He is a top player will go on to big teams in his career with his attitude, work rate, and reliability within his game. He is a massive player for us. “Kian Flanagan is not available either with a bone bruise on his ankle. We are hoping to get him an injection next week, but we need him back. “He is another big player for us and has plenty of ability. Kian is something different to what we have got. “We are still happy with the squad that we have this weekend.” We are back at The Hive London for the first time in three weeks, how important is it that we keep our positive home league form going? “Within the league campaign, we have only lost one of our last few games, but we need to continue picking up points. “The only way to get the fans right behind us is by our performances. We need to put our bodies on the line, work our socks off and

outrun the opposition. “They are the most important things in this business and then you can see the quality shine. “You have to earn the right to win football matches in the Vanarama National League. “If we can continue to get some more positive results, we will have our supporters right behind us.” How important is it that we have our supporters backing us once again, on what will be a wet and cold occasion? “It will definitely be wet on Saturday, so it is going to be zippy throughout the game. “We want to give the fans something to cheer about and they were brilliant at Boreham Wood.”

BARNET OVER 50’S BARNET WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM RAISES £1,856 FOR CRISIS FOR CHRISTMAS December has been a busy month for the team as we held our Crisis for Christmas sessions where we raised an amazing £1,856! This will provide two weeks of shelter and food as well as advice on how to break the homeless cycle for 60 people! We are incredibly pleased that we raised this much for such a good cause. We then supported Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign and dedicated one of our recent sessions to raise awareness for the LGBTQ+ community and ongoing No Room for Racism campaign. We want to support everyone and encourage people to play football without fear of abuse. We also visited the Colindale Community Garden where we helped repair the poly tunnel to ensure that the food grows properly throughout the winter months. Towards the end of November, we received an invitation to appear on the Age UK Barnet Zoom Sports Show. It was wonderful to see the hard work that they are doing. We would like to give a special mention to the team, who continues to work tirelessly in the community. So as the year comes to an end, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and healthy 2022! Come on you Bees!

TODAY’S LOOK AHEAD

ASTON

OXBOROUGH

TODAY’S LOOK AHEAD

Aston, Happy New Year. You earned a clean sheet in a challenging test at Boreham Wood last weekend and I am sure you will be hoping for the same again against Altrincham?

“It is a good group and I am enjoying my time here.

“Yes, I will be. I think that clean sheets are very important and we have been close to securing a few more throughout this season, where we have only conceded one goal.

What have our supporters been like with you lately?

“If we can improve and keep some more clean sheets then we can continue climbing the table.”

“There were lots of Bees fans at Boreham Wood last weekend and we could hear them throughout the match.

How much confidence does it give you to keep a clean sheet as a goalkeeper, especially against a strong side like Boreham Wood? “It was great to keep a clean sheet against Boreham Wood because we know how good they can be.

“I am pleased to be playing in the National League every week and I like working with the other lads.”

“The fans have been great and the away support has been terrific.

“Hopefully it can continue because it really makes a difference to us on the pitch.”

“It always makes you feel good because that is what you are there to do at the end of the day.”

We host Altrincham this weekend at The Hive London. They have lost their last four matches but will be looking to put things right on Saturday. How can we prevent that from happening and keep another clean sheet?

We had two of our games postponed over Christmas. How did that affect the training given that you did not have the weekend match to work towards?

“They are a very good side and we expect a battle against them. We have done our analysis on them and feel prepared heading into the match.

“It was frustrating not to be playing over Christmas. There were games that were getting called off late on whilst we were still in training.

“We know where their threats are likely to come from and understand what we should do to nullify them and win the match.”

“Despite this, we continued to work hard and focus on certain areas that need improving.

We have some big home games coming up soon. How do we keep our positive form going at The Hive London?

“We still had two good weeks of training over the festive period and had slightly more time to spend at home with family which was nice. “We are all eager to get back to the fixtures and start playing matches regularly again though.” You have been a regular between the sticks for us over the last few months. What has the team been like to play with and how are you finding it?

“It has been a while since our last game at home and we are looking forward to it. “There are a lot of talented players within the group and we all know what it takes to win football matches. “Each game is different but I am confident that we have the quality here to get some more positive results under our belt. “Hopefully we can give our supporters something to cheer about.”

THE OPPOSITION

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

Recent History: In 2020-21 Altrincham FC play in the Vanarama National League, following promotion from the National League North, via the play-offs, at the end of the 2019-20 campaign. Before that Altrincham FC had spent a total of 28 seasons at the national level (Step One) of non-League football in four spells at that level. In 2016 they had suffered their latest relegation from Step One and this was followed by an immediate relegation to Step Three the following season. However, the appointment of manager Phil Parkinson and his assistant Neil Sorvel had secured the NPL title in

2018 and an unsuccessful play-off place in 2019 before promotion in 2020. The Club continues to operate as a part-time team. Historically, Altrincham had been founder members of the Alliance (forerunner of the Football Conference) from its inception in 1979 until they were relegated in 1997. In fact they won the Alliance in its first two seasons, only being denied elevation to the Football League by the vagaries of the re-election system in place at that time (1980 and 1981).

THE OPPOSITION

THE OPPOSITION

MANAGER

PHIL PARKINSON Phil Parkinson was appointed on 28 April 2017, the eve of the last game of the 2016-17 season in which Altrincham had been relegated to the Northern Premier League. He had managed The Dabbers since February 2015 and in that time he had transformed them from a relegation-threatended club to promotion contenders. Phil also took Nantwich to the FA Trophy semi-finals in 2016. As a player, he was a junior at Crewe Alexandra, and then at Reading, before having a year at Port Vale. He made some two hundred appearances for Nantwich as a player, where he captained the team that won the FA Vase in 2006, as well as leading the Dabbers to promotion from the North West Counties League and UniBond League First Division.

Phil enjoyed promotion from the NPL as champions in his first season and reached the play-offs in 2018-19 in National League North before wining promotion to the National League via the playoffs in 2020. On 9 April 2021 it was announced that his contract had been extended to the end of the 2023-24 season.

TONY THOMPSON THOMPSON JOINED ALTRINCHAM IN 2017 Talented goalkeeper Tony joined Altrincham in the summer of 2017 after appearing in several pre-season games. After initially acting as an understudy to Tim Deasy, he soon established himself as Phil Parkinson’s first choice goalkeeper and was a key part of the EvoStik title winning squad. Before joining the Robins, Tony had began his career with Rotherham United. He gained experience on loan out at Curzon Ashton, Ossett Town, Chelmsford City and Southport. He later transferred to Morecambe where he made two professional appearances before making the move to Chester and then AFC Fylde.

TOM HAnnigan HANNIGAN IS A DEPENDABLE CENTRE-BACK Tom is the only remaining Alty player to have been signed by previous manager Neil Young. A dependable centre-back, he has enjoyed two promotions with the Robin’s. Tom began his career with Tranmere Rovers before playing for Vauxhall Motors and AFC Fylde.

ryan colclough COLCLOUGH JOINED THE ROBINS IN NOVEMBER 2020 Colclough started his career with Crewe Alexandra progressing through the academy to sign a two-year scholarship in the summer of 2011. He was promoted to the first team in September 2012, after impressing in pre-season games and for the under-21s. He made his professional debut for Crewe on 22 September 2012, in a 1–1 draw with Leyton Orient in Football League One, coming on as a substitute for Brendon Daniels. Colclough joined Wigan Athletic in January 2016, playing over 50 games for the club in the Championship, before joining League One side Scunthorpe United for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year deal. Colclough joined Altrincham in November 2020.

JAKE MOULT MOULT STARTED OUT AT ALTRINCHAM ON LOAN Central midfielder Jake originally signed for Altrincham in 2012 on a 93-day loan, but his impressive performances in the centre of the park soon earned him a permanent deal. Since then, he has filled in at a number of positions, taken the captain’s armband and even had a brief spell as caretaker manager! Perhaps his most memorable moment in an Alty shirt came in 2015 when he scored a 30-yard lob against Colchester in the FA Cup. Prior to joining Alty, Jake had played for Port Vale, Stafford Rangers, Kidsgrove and Alfreton. Jake has amassed well over 400 appearances for Alty.

SUPPORTERS Association

In the Community

BARNET FC Supporters association Barnet FC Supporters’ Association Page My name is Nicholas (Nick) Patel and I have recently had the pleasure of being invited to join the Executive Committee for the new Barnet FC Supporters’ Association. I am currently living in Buckinghamshire, however originally from North West London with most of my family still living in the local area. I first came across Barnet FC in 2001/2002 by accident really. I used to watch my Dad play cricket against Barnet CC for a few seasons and I snuck into Underhill for my first game. My first thought was that I could play at this level/standard! I remember the first thing that got me gripped was the colours of our kit and the stadium itself. I completed my Business Degree at Leeds University which was probably the best three years of my life. What a city! This took me into the career path of sales in FMCG and Pharmaceuticals where I’m head of UK sales. Cricket is probably the biggest passion I have alongside family and football, having played at a reasonably good standard before alcohol and excess weight gain took over. I remain Club Captain of my local team in Bucks which keeps me occupied in the summer months. I frequently used to visit games on and off with a very good family friend of Mr Clive Wilkinson who used to invite me to a few games a season. My real love and passion to be honest didn’t really come until 2015 when I frequently used the gym at The Hive due to buying my first place in Stanmore. From then on, I became obsessed with the likes of John Akinde, Mauro Vilhete and Elliot

Johnson and Martin Allen. What I loved and still love about Barnet is the closeness to the players, management the interaction you don’t get with other teams. The people you pay to see are literally normal people just like you. So finally, a bit about why I wanted to get involved in the Supporters’ Association. I have seen the numbers at games dwindling over the last few seasons and I believe just like myself that in some ways there’s an audience out there that we are missing out on. I have a desire to build a relationship with the Club and its supporters because we must become one. We must become unified and if I can offer my time and ideas to improve things off the field behind the scenes than I’m willing to do it! There is some great energy and ideas within the members of the committee and I’m sure we will continue to show progress in the months to come. I look forward to getting to know some of you more in and around the ground! Happy New Year and Come on you Bees!

YEOVIL TOWN AWAY POSTCARD It always seems to be the case that our away match against Yeovil falls on my birthday weekend - making the trip an exciting one. Due to Yeovil being a long way from Leeds, my parents came down to stay with me in London for the weekend, which allowed us to leave around 10:30am on Saturday morning. We took the M3 and A303 and although I did sleep most the way, I woke up when we passed Stonehenge. We carried on to Yeovil and arrived around 13:00, which gave us some time to get lunch before parking in the car park at the ground. We met some friends, got our tickets and all headed in. We watched the teams warm up in front of us and soon kick-off came. Yeovil were the side who started the game strongly with a big chance hitting the crossbar minutes into the game. Unfortunately, they continued well and took the lead on 10 minutes through a Yussuf header. As the half progressed, we managed to threaten a bit more, but without a striker on the pitch, we found it hard to create any end product and we went into half-time 1-0 down. At the break, a hot chocolate, some brownies and Christmas music went down a treat before the teams came out again. We started the second half brightly and had a few good chances at the start of the half. Yeovil continued to try and press themselves, but we were dealing with it better. On 70 minutes we made a sub with Ben Richards Everton coming on for Serhat Tasdemir. I must say despite being a defender, Richards-Everton put in a decent shift up front! Just minutes before full-time as we were longing for an equaliser, the referee gave Ephron Mason-Clark a red card for an off the ball incident. In the hope of a goal, Aston Oxborough came up for a corner, but no one was able to convert the chance and the game finished 1-0 to Yeovil. The team came over to a good reception from the fans and were applauded off the pitch. After the mad ending to the game, we walked back to the car and set off back to London. As I wanted to do something a bit more exciting than just go straight home, we had a stop off in Salisbury en route to visit their Christmas market which was lovely. We continued to London and arrived home around 22:00, before completing the night with a pizza. Whilst it was disappointing to lose, I had another lovely day out in Yeovil and I can safely say I won’t forget that game for a while!

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH altrincham

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH

altrincham The Bees and Altrincham have met one another on 30 occasions, starting in November 1979 - when both sides were inaugural members of what is now the Vanarama National League. Two games were in the league’s Bob Lord Trophy (the now discontinued league cup) and the rest in league games. Honours are more or less even. Disregarding these Trophy games, the Bees have won on 12 occasions, the Robins on 11, with five games drawn. Barnet lost both Trophy games. The two sides played one another home and away last season and in 2014/15. They are the only meetings since March 1991. Considering just the Bees’ home league games, the Barnet have won nine games, Altrincham two, with three draws. Barnet have hit the net on 25 occasions in those games, with the Robins scoring nine. Eddie Stein played in 17 games against Altrincham, home and away, while Kevin Millett made 13 appearances and Nicky Evans made 11. John Akinde scored four times against Altrincham for Barnet (including a hat-trick in 2014), while Stewart Atkins, Nicky Evans and Eddie Stein have each managed three goals. The highest attendance at home is 3,696 for a game in 1990/91, at Underhill. The highest crowd at the Moss Lane Stadium was later the same season and is recorded as 3,000 exactly. Last season, the Bees lost 2-1 at home in January 2021. However, they won 3-2 away in April 2021, coming back from two goals down. In that most recent game, Barnet’s goals were scored by Courtney Baker-Richardson (now with Newport County), Ephron Mason-Clark and Tomi Adeloye (now with Ayr United). Altrincham’s goals were scored by Ryan Colclough and Alistair Smith (now with Sutton United). The Barnet team for that most recent meeting was: Aymen Azaze, Lee Vaughan, Themis Kefalas (Tomi Adeloye), Lian Daly, Harry Taylor, Alex McQueen, Matt Preston, Sam Beard, Sam Skeffington (Michael Petrasso), Ephron Mason-Clark, Courtney Baker-Richardson (Ben Richards-Everton).

By defeating Altrincham on 20 September 2014, the Bees notched their eighth win of the 2014/15 season in only 11 games. The Bees ran out resounding 5-0 winners at The Hive London, in the Vanarama National League, with John Akinde grabbing a first-half hat-trick. Barnet’s first goal came after 13 minutes. Left back Sam Muggleton sent a long ball forward to the far side of the box, where it was headed back by Jon Nurse for Luisma Villa. In acres of space, the Spanish playmaker struck a half-volley sweetly into the bottom corner from about 23 yards, giving David Parton in the Altrincham goal no chance. The Bees had two more chances that fell to Luisma and David Stephens, before John Akinde made it two on the half-hour mark. An angled ball forward by Elliot Johnson towards the corner of the box was chased by the Barnet striker. He got to the ball a fraction before Parton and was inevitably upended. Akinde got up to take the spot kick and, although the ‘keeper went the right way, the ball was placed firmly just inside the post and hit the back of the net. The ‘keeper, who had been injured in the original incident, was immediately replaced. The Bees extended their lead further on 44 minutes. Adam Mekki ran onto a lay off by John Akinde just inside the penalty area, but the wide man was brought down from behind by Scott Leather. Akinde again took the penalty, and this time sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, putting the ball in the same place as before. In the second minute of first half stoppage time, Akinde completed his 17-minute hat-trick. The move started with consecutive

his seventh season with Northampton Town). Within a minute, the debutant had continued where Akinde had left off, scoring with his first touch. The Altrincham defence backed off expecting another Muggleton long throw. However, the throw was taken short and eventually crossed by the left back himself. After being flicked on, the ball reached Hoskins, who swivelled and scored from about 10-yards. Barnet had the chance to make it six when a shot by Hoskins was parried and Luke Gambin’s follow-up effort was well saved. Altrincham nearly got one back when an Andy Yiadom back pass put Damian Reeves through one-on-one with Graham Stack, but the Bees keeper raced out to save. The result kept the Bees top, a point ahead of Torquay United. Barnet finished the season as Champions and Altrincham in the bottom half. Teams: Bees: Graham Stack, Andy Yiadom, Bondz N’Gala (Sam Togwell), David Stephens, Sam Muggleton, Jon Nurse, Curtis Weston, Elliot Johnson, Adam Mekki (Luke Gambin), Luisma Villa, John Akinde (Sam Hoskins). Drawn at home to Chelsea, the game was switched to Stamford Bridge, where the attendance was 23,200. The Bees held the Premier League side to a goalless draw. We went down 4-0 in the replay, 11 days later. Carl Hoddle played for the Bees, while older brother Glenn was the Chelsea manager. Brian Stein played for Chelsea in the match and 13 years later became the Bees’ physiotherapist.

The Bees had been involved in six more away games than home games, due to having played more games away before the 2019/20 season was curtailed because of Covid-19 and due to playing both play-off games away in that season. The goalless draw away at Boreham Wood last Sunday was the Bees’ first clean sheet away from home in 14 matches: since they visited Weymouth at the beginning of May 2021. Dean Brennan’s men have not conceded more than a single goal in their past seven away games, a run not bettered since they went 10 away games without conceding more than one goal between 21 December 2019 and 18 July 2020. On average Vanarama National League teams have used between 24 and 25 players for their league games this season (including those who have made substitute appearances). The Bees have, so far, used 24 players. Ben Strevens’ Eastleigh have used 20 players, the lowest number of any club in the league, followed by Boreham Wood on 21. Aldershot have used 30 players, more than any other side, followed by today’s visitors Altrincham, Kings Lynn and Southend who have utilised 28 The Bees have won five of their most recent eight games in the league (picking up 16 points) and won each of their latest three home league games. Altrincham have won once in their last eight games in the league, gathering six points.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz

This weekend saw the first female referee take charge of a men’s FA Cup Third Round tie. Rebecca Welch, who was appointed to UEFA’s elite female list of referees last year, will take charge of Birmingham City vs Plymouth Argyle. She has previously officiated in the WSL, as well as the men’s Football League and National League. She has also refereed the Women’s FA Cup finals in 2017 and 2020, as well as the 2020 FA Women’s Community Shield. She was also the first female referee to officiate a men’s Football League match

Eliot Richards has joined Merthyr Town for his fourth spell at the club. Initially joining on-loan from West Super Mare in 2016, he signed permanently in 2017. After a spell at Hereford, he re-signed in 2019, before joining Barnet in July 2020. After scoring once in five matches, he picked up a serious injury in our FA Cup match against Burton Albion, which left him out for the next 13 months, being released during that time. Omer Riza has also signed for Hertford Town. He spent two loan spells at Underhill between 2000 and 2001, scoring four times in ten games for the Club.

With the transfer window now open, there is of course some former Bees players on the move. Amongst these is Dillon Barnes, who played for us between 2012 and 2014. He featured for the Bees in our academy set up as well as making appearances on the bench numerous times, before joining Fulham. He has now joined Yeovil Town on a short-term loan deal from Queens Park Rangers. Charlie Clough, who scored once in 59 appearances for us between 2016 and 2018, has signed for Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand, after a spell with DPMM in Brunei. Ryan Gondoh signed for Wealdstone. After some time at Carshalton Athletic, he joined the Bees in 2014. He spent some time at Wealdstone last year but had recently donned the Hampton & Richmond Borough shirt.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

The English Football League have announced that they are removing matchday testing. This means that there is no longer a need for clubs to be testing players for Covid-19 on matchdays. This is reportedly being down to attempt to prevent late postponements, after 13 new year fixtures were postponed quite late on. The EFL have also stated that they believe testing every day except for matchdays is enough. The decision was said to have been made after the Blackburn Rovers team and many travelling supporters went to Hull City on Boxing Day, only for the match to be postponed less than two hours before kick-off.

Torquay United have announced that they have launched an investigation into reports of incidents during their recent time against Yeovil Town. The Gulls hosted Yeovil Town at Plainmoor on Boxing Day, with incidents later being reported that “marred” the match. The Devon side won 3-0, with the Glovers being reduced to nine men after two red cards. The first red card came in the 64th minute, with goals following in the 66th, 70th and 86th minute, before a second straight red card came in the 90th minute. The club also stated that any perpetrators of the incident caught will be issued with lifetime bans from the stadium, although did not elaborate on what the incidents involved

Wrexham say that they have caught three individuals re-selling tickets for their matches at the Racecourse Ground for hugely inflated prices. This comes after the side was taken over last year by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, which has subsequently seen a massive increase in demand. The Club have said that this issue has been reported to North Wales Police. Having attempted to re-sell tickets for some upcoming fixtures, the club have cancelled their purchases, so the tickets have been invalidated. The recent takeover has had an effect on the pitch, seeing the side rise to 3rd place in the National League, having been relegated from League Two in 2008.

MATCH Report

MATCH Report THE BEES WERE KNOCKED OUT OF THE BUILDBASE FA TROPHY THIRD ROUND – AFTER LOSING 3-2 AGAINST BOREHAM WOOD AT THE HIVE LONDON.

The fifth goal of the afternoon came in the 66th minute after the ball was passed to Marsh inside the box with his back to goal. The 27-year-old turned and put the ball through Reiss Greenidge’s legs before firing it into the top corner to give visitors the lead once again. Dean Brennan’s side showed spirit to stay in the game and almost netted their third to level the score in the 74th minute.

The Bees started quickly and broke the deadlock in the 10th minute after a deep free-kick from Aston Oxborough had to be punched away by Taye Ashby-Hammond.

Sam Beard and Adam Marriott linked up well down the left side of the pitch before sending the ball into Hall at the near post, who forced Ashby-Hammond into a reaction save.

Rob Hall was first to the poor clearance as his first-time strike from just outside the box took a deflection and curled into the far corner of the net.

Deep into stoppage-time Josh Payne was shown a straight red card for a late challenge to end a disappointing afternoon for the Bees.

Luke Garrard’s side responded and levelled the scoring in the 14th minute as Tyrone Marsh was first to a loose ball inside the penalty area. The Wood’s No.10 looked up and slotted the ball into the bottom corner – beyond Aston Oxborough’s outstretched arms. The visitors went close soon after as Marsh was played down the flank before looking up and forcing a quick save from Oxborough at his near post from a tight angle. Boreham Wood were awarded a penalty in the 28th minute as Sam Woods brought down Adrian Clifton in the box. Marsh stepped up and slammed the spot-kick off the underside of the crossbar and just over the line to give his side the lead for the first time. As the first-half was coming to a close, the Bees equalised through a well-worked goal. Rob Hall collected the ball near the halfway line and danced past several players before slipping through Wes Fonguck, who controlled it and calmly slotted it underneath the ‘keeper. The Wood started the second period with intent and went close as a dangerous cross into the centre had to be turned over the crossbar by Sam Beard from close-range. In the 52nd minute the Bees were reduced down to 10 men when Mitch Brundle received a straight red card.

A-Z OF FORMER BARNET PLAYERS

ROGER willis During Barry Fry’s spell in charge of the Club, the Bees had Gary Phillips in goal who came over from rivals Enfield. The midfield included Derek Payne, Carl Hoddle (brother of Glenn). The front two were Gary Bull (cousin of Steve) and Roger ‘Harry’ Willis. At this level, Willis shone. Calm and collected on the ball, he could play in attack and in midfield an attacking threat all round. He got his fair share of goals and always looked like a useful player. His partnership with Gary Bull was strong and they almost won promotion during their first league season at Underhill. After impressing further, a few big clubs came sniffing around for Willis’s signature and it was Watford that secured him in October 1992 for £175,000 - but he failed to really impress in his first season and was sold to Birmingham City. He followed Fry to the Blues and Southend and scored against the Hornets after departing the Club. Willis then moved on to Peterborough before finally finding a more permanent club in Chesterfield - where he was able to stay in the first team regularly and be happy playing his football again. After his Chesterfield stay ended, he had brief spells at a few non-league clubs but that is where his football career came to an end.

Rest in Peace JOHN FOX

Today we pay tribute to a dedicated Barnet fan, John Fox. His son Richard Fox has written a heartfelt message about his beloved father. “My Dad had been supporting Barnet since the end of the WWII, attending home and away up to just a couple of years ago when his health sadly prevented him from attending matches regularly. He was present when Barnet beat Bishop Auckland 3-2 to win the F.A Amateur Cup in 1946, (a match that really intensified his love for the club - his favourite player will always be Lester Finch!) He was present when Barnet played their first professional match, the 10-1 thrashing of Hinckley Athletic in 1965, and he was there for all three of Barnet’s Conference/NL titles wins. He was a regular from 1945 onwards and a season ticket holder for nearly all the seasons between 1945-46 to 2017-18. His love and passion were passed onto his wife, Shelia, now a Barnet fan herself for 60 years, and to me, a current Barnet season ticket holder and a fan since the age of 8 watching the Bees 0-0 draw against Brighton the FA Cup 3rd Round. His dedication and love for the club will be remembered at his funeral on the 23rd December with Barnet scarfs and amber ‘n black strongly in evidence! And I will be including many of his Bees stories when I speak at the service. He would want me to let the club know that, during his life, Barnet FC has meant so much to him and to his family. The last conversation I had with him on Friday prior to his passing was to give him a match report about the 2-1 win at Woking the previous weekend. A last minute winner to cheer him up. He was hoping for a third straight Barnet win against Maidenhead he died less than an hour after the final whistle. The lads sent him off in style.” Forever in our hearts. Forever a Bee.
