WRITES

Darren Currie

First of all I’d like to welcome the players, staff and supporters of Ebbsfleet United to The Hive for tonight’s match. It is a big game for both teams and both will be after the three points. They come here in good form so it’s pivotal that we play to our maximum. I was really disappointed with the result away at Barrow. I was annoyed with our performance because I know we are so much more capable than what we are producing at the moment. These players and myself have to stand up now and make ourselves counted, by fighting for our Club, our badge and most importantly our supporters. I know it may come across as the same thing as I have said before, but I believe we are capable of producing good things here. But at the moment things are clearly not going our way. It’s time for these players to dig deep and turn this season around. There are some who have suggested that I don’t care about what’s going on at the moment. I care more than anyone will know about this football club, these players, the supporters and my own career. I am desperate to succeed here at the Bees and for anyone to suggest otherwise is very disappointing because I really do care and I want to turn this around. However, on the flip side I understand everyone’s frustrations and your entitled to you’re opinion on things. I want to thank everyone who travelled to Barrow on Saturday. I thought it was only right that I came over and addressed you the way I did, but please let me reiterate I am giving it everything I have to do good things for this football club.

The boys know exactly what I want from them this evening and we have to be ruthless in front of goal if we’re going to go and take the points this evening. It’s what cost us last time we were here against Stockport, but we have to go out there and put the ball in the net. We have to lift the mood here and fast. We’re all responsible, I want us to play as a team. We have to do that if we want things to get better. We need to put in a performance that proves to you guys that we have hope of turning this around.

Thanks for your support, as always. I really hope it’s the start of the turn around! Get behind us and we will do everything we can to produce the right result.

EBBSFLEET UNITED

OPPOSITION

History Ebbsfleet United Football Club was born as Gravesend & Northfleet, a merger of two existing neighbouring clubs – Gravesend United and Northfleet United. Both had been playing football in the area since the 1890s, with Northfleet in particular notable as a Tottenham nursery side in the 1930s. The newly merged club formed in April 1946, moving into Northfleet’s superior facilities at their Stonebridge Road ground, with most of the directors coming from Gravesend United. The Fleet played their first ever game on 31 August 1946, against Hereford United, and ran out 3-0 winners in front of over 5,000 fans. Despite lofty ambitions and full-time investment, the Fleet teams of the Forties and early Fifties yielded only two Kent Senior Cups and it was not until 1957-58 that the club tasted league success, with manager Lionel Smith’s star-studded and attacking side claiming the Southern League title and scoring 135 league and cup goals along the way. 12

BARNETFC.COM

But the success did not last, and financial concerns meant that the Sixties were a torrid time for Fleet fans. Nevertheless, during this period the club enjoyed their best ever FA Cup run when they reached a Fourth Round replay at Sunderland, setting an existing record of five months as the longest cup run of any team in the long history of the competition. Relegation and promotion seasons came and went, notably in 1967 when the entire Board resigned en masse, leaving the club with nothing but a ground and considerable debts. Things picked up after Tony Sitford’s appointment as manager in 1974, and the Fleet duly won the Southern Division title in 1974-75. Despite a hoped-for Premier Division title challenge over the next few years, consolidation instead followed. A brief title challenge was mounted in 197677, but the Fleet did take home the Southern League Cup that season, following victory over Weymouth in the final. Fleet’s decent showing over the next two seasons meant they qualified as founder members of the newly created Alliance Premier League...

THE HISTORY

announced a change of name to Ebbsfleet United to take advantage of the massive regeneration of their locality. Then in November 2007, it was announced that the club was to be taken over by internet venture MyFootballClub.co.uk, a revolutionary idea involving paid members owning the club, voting on decisions and picking the team, a deal that was ratified in February 2008. On the footballing side of things, the Fleet enjoyed their most memorable moment in more than six decades, clinching victory in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium, a 1-0 win over Torquay United in front of 40,186 proving enough to take home the silverware. With hopes high for 2008-09 and the club’s highestever playing budget voted on by MyFC members, the eventual league position of 14th was disappointing while defence of the FA Trophy fell just short of another trip to Wembley, the Fleet edged out by Stevenage Borough at the semi-final stage.

(Later Conference) in 1979-80, finishing an excellent fifth in its inaugural season. But the Eighties spelled more hard times for the club and relegation followed in 1981, and a further relegation to the Southern Division in 1985-86 meant Fleet were back in the doldrums of non-league football. Having almost gone to the wall as financial problems beleaguered the club, a group of directors under new chairman Lionel Ball rescued the Fleet and were rewarded with a promotion back to the Premier Division in 1988-89 and a best-ever FA Trophy run, with two Conference scalps claimed along the way.

With the fall in MyFC membership in February 2009, Fleet faced an uncertain future, releasing almost their entire first-team squad. Liam Daish remained as manager and rebuilt a squad that almost, heroically, defied the odds but fell to relegation on the final day of the 2009-10 season. The manager was forced to rebuild again in 2010-11 as the club embarked on its first season at a lower level in nearly a decade and once more the manager proved his talent for assembling a squad as Fleet unexpectedly won promotion back to the Premier Division at the first attempt. It came courtesy of a third-place finish in the league and a 4-2 win at Farnborough in the play-off final.

Following relegation once again in the early Nineties, the Fleet won the Southern Division by a country mile in 1993-94, with hot-shot goalscorer Steve Portway netting goals for fun. Another cup run followed in 1995-96, Fleet playing 10 games to reach Round 3 and lose out 3-0 to Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Returning to the Conference Premier for the 2011-12 season, the club finished a creditable 14th in their first season back in non-league’s top flight. The following season, however – despite much initial optimism – saw the Fleet struggle to compete and a relegation that looked inevitable from early on was confirmed in April 2013, Fleet finishing second bottom of the division, a long way adrift of safety. Off-field matters dominated, with several appeals for investment throughout the season until fans were faced with the very real threat of the club closing or taking voluntary demotion down the non-league Pyramid.

In May 1997, the club transferred to the Ryman Premier Division in an effort to cut travelling distances and reduce costs, and after a few seasons in mid-table, came from nowhere under manager Andy Ford to land the Ryman League Championship in 2001-02, following a nervous and titanic struggle with Canvey Island, which saw the two meet at Stonebridge Road in April 2002 in front of an official 4,068 (but probably more like 6,000) fans. Back in the top-flight of non-league football, the Fleet had a few narrow brushes with relegation, with Andy Ford stepping down in January 2005. New manager Liam Daish oversaw a move to full-time football and made slow but steady progress. 2007 was the year it all changed for the Fleet. First, in May, 61 years after the formation of Gravesend & Northfleet, the club

In May 2013, a purchase proposal from a Kuwaiti company, KEH Sports Ltd, was put to MyFC who voted to sell their interests in the Fleet and so began a new era for the club as it pulled back from the brink of closure. KEH – with former Charlton CEO Peter Varney as vice chair – began an immediate ground restoration

programme, with the long overdue replacement of two roofs at Stonebridge Road and refurbishment of the entire stadium. Ex-Charlton defender Steve Brown replaced Liam Daish, his record-breaking eight-year term ended by mutual consent, with ex-Charlton manager Steve Gritt as assistant, while KEH promised a competitive transfer budget in a bid to propel the Fleet back towards the Conference Premier.

by Maidenhead United on 98 points, but erased the previous season’s play-off heartache by coming from behind with 10 men to overhaul Chelmsford City 2-1 in the final and spark joyous celebrations at the club. Off the field, the club demolished the Liam Daish Stand in 2016 to build a new £5m Main Stand and the Plough End behind the goal will soon follow to incorporate a hotel during 2018/19 as the Fleet seek to redevelop the entire site for the benefit of the club and local community.

That season Fleet were just pipped to promotion by Dover Athletic, losing the promotion final 1-0 though did pick up the Kent Senior Cup at the same opposition’s expense. With promotion still very much a target, former Welling United boss Jamie Day took over in mid-season 2014/15. His considerable shake-up of the squad didn’t quite produce the desired effect and although Fleet reached the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy, they dropped away badly in the league to finish 8th. Former club skipper Daryl McMahon was handed the manager’s reins in time for the 2015/16 season and began with a bang, winning 10 of his first 11 matches in charge. Fleet led the league for eight months of the season but were pipped to the title by Sutton United and lost a second promotion final, this time to Maidstone United, on penalties. There was no mistake in 2016/17 with Fleet getting over an indifferent start to remain unbeaten throughout 2017. Despite amassing 96 points, Fleet were just beaten to the title

In our first season back at National League level, the club reached the play-offs for the first time with a remarkable run in the final 14 games to finish in sixth place, our second-highest finish ever, and we progressed to the semi-finals, defeating Aldershot in a remarkable penalty shootout before succumbing only after extratime to eventual winners Tranmere Rovers. Daryl McMahon departed the club after three-and-a-half years in charge in November 2018, making way for the appointment of the experienced Garry Hill who oversaw a major reshaping of the squad amid a financial restructuring off the pitch. But with Fleet rooted to the bottom in his second season, Hill parted ways with the club in October 2019, to be replaced by his assistant Kevin

EBBSFLEET UNITED FC TEAM Harry has also played for Braintree Town, Lewes, Haringey Borough, Dorking Wanderers, Brightlingsea Regent and AFC Hornchurch but it was at Canvey last season where he excelled. He won the manager’s and supporters’ player of the season awards last term with the Gulls, having previously helped AFC Hornchurch to an Isthmian North title and he has also trained with Southend United. He kept a clean sheet on his Fleet debut in the 4-0 win at Chorley in October.

Winger who signed for the Fleet in summer 2017 from Wycombe Wanderers, the Antigua & Barbuda international has played more than 320 games at Football League level. A former Arsenal and Charlton Athletic youth who played for England from U16 to U19 level, Myles won player of the year at Notts County during a two-year spell at Meadow Lane from 2007–09. Three years at Brentford followed after the Bees settled a £25,000 tribunal with the Magpies and Myles stepped up to League One, playing more than 100 games for the Griffin Park side. He won promotion in his first season at his next club, Gillingham, who were League Two champions in 2012/13 and two years later was promoted again, this time with Southend United when he scored in a penalty shootout at Wembley v Wycombe. Ironically, Wycombe was his next port of call in 2016, where he spent a year before joining the Fleet. Despite the drop into non-league, Myles continues to feature for Antigua, having scored six goals in eight games for the Benna Boys. He signed a new contract at the Fleet in July 2019.

Marvel dropped into non-league with North Greenford United while still a teenager but has worked his way up through the levels, playing for Chelmsford City and moving on to Bishop’s Stortford and Hungerford Town, working with Fleet’s caretaker manager Kevin Watson at both those clubs.

Signed in August 2019 on a six-month loan deal from Stevenage, the Birmingham-born player is a former Aston Villa and Walsall academy prospect who started out in non-league with Rushall Olympic, where he scored 14 goals in half a season, and Solihull Moors. Fleetwood Town paid a fee for his services in January 2017 and he went on to feature for Wrexham and Solihull on loan. He signed for Stevenage last summer, playing 11 games in League Two before spending the rest of last season on loan with AFC Fylde, scoring in their National League win over Salford City and appearing in the Coasters’ three play-off games, including against Salford at Wembley. He earned a second Wembley appearance as Fylde won the FA Trophy against Leyton Orient.

At Hungerford last season, Marvel was captain and won three player of the year awards. He came to Newport’s notice after a successful season and signed a two-year contract with the League Two club in the summer.

Two further goals by West plus others from Ricky Shakes and Calum Willock gave Ebbsfleet a 4-2 win over Farnborough in the play-off final. Liam Daish’s side took AFC Wimbledon to an FA Cup first round replay before losing 3-2 after extra-time watched by 2,306 at Stonebridge Road.

WALKING FOOTBALL

On a cold afternoon at the hub in Regent’s Park, we played a very strong Chelsea FC Foundation team on a bumpy grass pitch which mixed with the strong winds made ball control very difficult. The Lads however put on an excellent display of Walking Football, Tom Moran was superb in defence spraying passes all around the pitch with Shaun and Remo in support. We protected Nick to just a few back passes. Across the middle, Steven Lewis tested the keeper regularly and hit a rocket shot against the bar while Kevin Ziants covered every inch of grass with Ken Patterson a constant threat supporting our forwards Richard Smith and Richard Fincher. We controlled the first quarter getting used to the conditions and were unlucky to see a Steven Lewis penalty saved by the Chelsea Keeper who was their man of the match. The second period saw us dominate and finally Ken Patterson scored to see us lead 1-0. The third quarter continued to see us dominate and restrict Chelsea to a few long shots and the final period saw us under some pressure as the home side pushed forward and had their only real chance of the match which was hit wide from close range. 52 minutes of football in tough conditions saw us win 1-0. It was great to make new walking football friends and we look forward to inviting them back to The Hive in the future.

THE BEES SUFFERED DEFEAT AT THE HANDS OF LEAGUE LEADERS BARROW AFC IN AN INTENSE CONTEST AT THE PROGRESSION SOLICITORS STADIUM.

HOW IT HAPPENED The Bees started brightly and almost opened the scoring as Ephron MasonClark flashed an effort just wide of the far post. Meanwhile up the other end, Dior Angus forced Scott Loach into a save as he tipped his low effort round the post. But it was the hosts who took the lead midway through the half as Josh Kay was found in space, before sweeping past Loach and into the corner. The Bees almost got straight back into it and will be kicking themselves that they didn’t. Jack Taylor rose highest to win a header six yards out, but it went wide of the post. It was a chance that could only be described as guilt edged. 30 seconds later John Rooney unleashed a superb effort from the corner of the box that flew into the back of the net, leaving Loach with absolutely no chance. The second goal was a real kick in the teeth for the Bees and they struggled to get going again from there on, as the hosts knocked the ball around with confidence. The second half saw a golden chance for Vilhete after a superb pass by J Taylor,

FC

however our number 20 fired wide on the volley. Up the other end Quigley had a number of efforts well saved by Loach, our number one making a string of fine stops to keep his side with a chance. With 12 minutes to play Loach was back at his brilliant best as he made a great stop with his boot to deny Kay a second goal. Five minutes from the end J Taylor took advantage of a defensive mistake to slot home and give us hope. With six minutes added on the Bees threw everything at the Bluebirds, Callum Reynolds fired an effort that was stopped well with Dixon. That proved to be the last chance for the Bees and they made the long trip to London empty handed.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

Alex Jones Digresses Thirty years Hoped to be here this evening. Then travelling back overnight to a memorial event for my friend Ruth. If her cousin, Gillian is able to make it, I shall scold her “All your fault Gill”. In 1989, stayed with Gillian before an interview in Finchley teachers centre. This was successful, and I ended up working at a crazy school in Burnt Oak for eighteen years. A couple of weeks later I pitched up at Underhill, and ended up following an even nuttier side, Barnet.

Crook Town The 1888 Facebook website carries a photo of the FA Amateur Cup Final. You can see the same Wembley programme at Barnet museum, where the football exhibition is still running. Crook Town won 3-2 sixty years ago. Now we fast forward to the present Crook, who are challenging in their League in third place, the Northern League Division Two led by Ryton and Crawcrook Albion. I wonder how many spectators at the Hive today were at Wembley all those years ago.

Gravesend and north fleet Travelled to on three occasions, the first time in 2003 and a 2-2 draw, with Midgley and Pope the scorers for the Bees. Two things I remember of the area. There was a talking parrot, at a local pub, who refused to say a word. Then at the game a rat scurried across the terrace. No idea if the two animals ever met, or if the rodent was impressed with what he saw. And my time in London was before the Railway Bell New Barnet was known as the Rat and Parrot. On one occasion Martin Allen jumped on the supporters coach and wished us well. The three events did not occur simultaneously. Mart was at a midweek

game, early on as part of the first of his thirty one stints in charge.

Wembley way There were no parrots present at Wembley when Ebbsfleet played and defeated Torquay. Also present at the game were a collective of Chris Emery, Thomas Salinger and Shannon Thorpe, whose young lad Alfie will be leading the line for Barnet in two decades time. Starring for the Kentish club that day was one Mr John Akinde.1-0 the score, but I was to speak with a Torquay fan from Burnt Oak a few weeks later, who lamented how the Devon club failed to turn up that day. She may not recall that goal scorer Chris McPhee was voted man of the match. Over 41.000 were present that day, but I was also there the previous year when the crowd exceeded 50,000, largely as it was one of the first competitive games at the new stadium.

ROMFORD Their chairman- manager is now Glenn Tamplin, who failed to lead Billericay into the promised land of the Football League as promised. Instead he immediately signed fifteen players, and made similar claims. Appropriately his First game in charge was against Coggeshall Town, where the manager is our former star Cliff Akurang, who must have been smiling after a 3-2 victory. Wonder if Billericay have kept his mural….. or will he commission a Romford artistic wall. At Billericay he was doing rather well. You ask Joyce and Vickyw with Ben Strevens. Initially Ben was injured the day he turned up for a trial at Underhill.

Previously Do not have any recollection of the first Barnet v Gravesend clash in 1965, largely as I was just nine months old. The Underhill faithful were entertained by a 5-1 victory however, including a Les Eason hat trick and a Figg penalty. Our most recent meetings were in 2004.ending in 4-1 at Underhill and 3-1 down in Kent with Dean Sinclair and the mercurial Liam Hatch scoring in both games. I also recollect Gareth Morgan, {former tutor of Joey Barton} and his fiancé in the Kentish port, a few years before. She hails from Marseille, and was an assistant at a school in the town, hence the Barton reference.

Where’s the Bar There is a question on the lips of nearly every Barnet real ale drinker of a certain age….. no names no pack drill, and one is currently watching the cricket in New Zealand. It is also the name of a pamphlet I purchased in the Golden Year of 1991, and I will rewrite some of the essay of Mr Doron Garfunkel in subsequent weeks. That year Gravesend would sooner not recollect they finished bottom but one of the Beazer Homes Premier. Weymouth fared even worse, but it was a historic year for Barnet as we won the Conference. Of our opponents that season….. this campaign we will play Barrow, Yeovil and Sutton. Doron was happily able to write “yet again it seemed that Barnet were going to be the nearly men”…….. Not that year though.

Finally…. Although our 2-2 with Woking was last month, can I just emphasize that I have never visited the Pizza Express there….. or anywhere else. I just don’t like pizzas, doesn’t make me a bad person.

Buzz?

Last week saw the record of the longest penalty shootout in English football history equalled. Taunton Town hosted Truro City in a Southern League Cup second round tie last week, with the game going to the shootout after a 2-2 draw. A total of 34 kicks from the spot were taken to determine a winner for the tie, which equalled the previous record set in the game between Chelsea U23 and Oxford United at Stamford Bridge in the EFL Trophy in 2016. The tie was won 12-11 by Taunton, after Truro missed their final penalty. “Thirty four minutes, 34 penalties and then I had to rebuild the penalty spot afterwards. It was mad” said Taunton chairman Kevin Sturmey, who is also the clubs’ head groundsman. “We had two opportunities to win it on penalties 32 and 33 and missed them both; one would have been signalled a wide in cricket”.

After being defeated 7-1 away at Accrington Stanley on Saturday, Bolton Wanderers manager Keith Hill said that he “doesn’t understand” what went wrong with his side and their performance. The result was their worst ever in the third tier, and left the side still stuck on just one point in League One, after they started the season on -12 points. The side had took the lead after just five minutes, but just ten minutes later, the side had picked a red card, before being 3-1 down at half time. “I’m very disappointed. I didn’t see it coming and I don’t understand it” Hill said. “We don’t want to make the situation any worse. We find ourselves in a reasonable position after working ever so hard over the past nine games and we don’t want to throw it away today. We’re still in a position to attack the league”.

With all ties from round two having now been completed, the draw for round three of the FA Youth Cup has been completed. There are five academy sides of non league clubs still in the competition at this stage. Croydon have been drawn away at Wigan Athletic, Curzon Ashton will be at home to Burnley, South Shields will travel to Fulham, Maidenhead United will be on the road at Oxford United and of course our under 18s will be travelling to AFC Bournemouth on Wednesday 11th December. Other notable ties include Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool, Manchester United vs Lincoln City, West Ham United vs Charlton Athletic and Cheltenham Town vs Arsenal.

In a strange transfer, Robbie Savage has come out of retirement, eight years since last playing a professional game. He made his debut in 1994 for Crewe Alexandra, before spells at Leicester City, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Brighton and Hove Albion, also playing 39 times for Wales. He originally retired in 2011 after a stint at Derby County, but will now play for Stockport Town, who currently play in the North West Counties League Division 1 South, the 10th tier of English football. “It’s not a PR stunt, it’s me trying to help youngsters progress in the game” said Savage. “I want to try and give a bit of what I went through in my career with rejection, rehabilitation and the mental side of football. I am not going to run games, I will need legs around me. My son had to go out and buy me some boots today - it’s a great opportunity for me”.

National League South side Chelmsford City have signed Queens Park Rangers youngster Aaron Drewe on a one month work experience loan deal. The 18 year old defender came through the academy at Loftus Road, playing at several youth levels for the club. “I cannot wait to get started and meet up with the team”, Drewe said. “I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead, but most importantly, looking to get that winning feeling every match”. City’s squad also contains former Premier League striker Leroy Lita, who joined the Essex side earlier in the season. They currently sit in 12th place in the league.

Police are looking into reports that a referee was knocked unconscious whilst officiating a game over the weekend. The tie between Sporting 50 and AFC Sutton Common Rovers took place in Surbiton, south London on Saturday, with both police and paramedics being called to the scene. The game was then abandoned immediately, with both clubs having since condemned the incident. “London Ambulance Service treated the man at the scene. His injuries are non life-threatening” said a statement. “The suspects had left the ground by the time of the officers’ arrival. There are no arrests at this time and enquiries continue”.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has insisted that his side will not give up on the chase to catch Liverpool and win the Premier League. The Citizens last won the top flight last season, but Liverpool last did so in 1990, 30 years ago come the end of this season. The Reds secured a late win over Crystal Palace on Saturday to maintain their unbeaten start to the season, keeping them on the top spot, with eight points off of second placed Leicester City, nine off of third placed City, and 16 off of fifth place. “The only pressure we can have is we are going to lose the Premier League. It is not the first time in Manchester City’s 125-year history that they [may] lose the Premier League” said Guardiola. “[If] we lose the Premier League we are going to try again next season”.

Former Chelsea player Eden Hazard has said that Kylian Mbappe will become the best player in the world and wants him to join him at Real Madrid. The Belgium international joined the Spanish outfit in the summer, after having spent seven years at Chelsea having previously spent time at Lille before that. Meanwhile, France international Mbappe came through the academy at Monaco, before being initially loaned out to Paris Saint Germain, then a 145 million Euro transfer, with another 35 million in add ons. He has also been subject to transfers to the Spanish giants for several years. Over the summer, he hinted that he would be open to leaving France, to move on to a “new project”. “In a few years, he will certainly be the best player in the world” Hazard said. “This title, there are a lot of players who fight for it, but if he continues like this, Kylian (Mbappe) will be one of the greatest footballers in the history of the world. A footballer constantly dreams of playing alongside the best”.

HOW IT HAPPENED An early effort from Ephron Mason-Clark was saved by the visiting keeper Ben Hinchliffe to the centre of the goal straight from kick off. Strong early pressure from the Hatters as the Bees sought to gain control in the centre of the park. A sharp through ball from Mason-Clark set Josh Walker through on goal but his effort was well blocked for a corner. Having worked himself a yard of space, a shot from Ephron Mason-Clark flew over the bar as Barnet began to put some pressure on the Stockport backline. As the Bees carved Stockport open midway through the first half, Josh Walker was again thwarted as his low effort found the legs of Hinchliffe in the County goal. After clearing the area from a Hatters set piece, Walker was again clear one on one with Ash Palmer, jinking inside and his left footed finish was saved before David Tutonda rebound flew over the bar. With the half drawing to a close, Tutonda found Elito alone on the edge of the area and his shot was headed over the bar for a corner for the Bees. As the second half began to take shape, a corner from Barnet was cleared to the edge of the area before James Dunne’s strike was blocked and the move fizzled out for the Bees. After good work from Mason-Clark, his lay off to the edge of the area for Harry Taylor was as his effort sores over the Stockport bar. Midway through the second half, a rasping long 38

range strike from Elito flew just wide of the left hand post as the Bees continued to control the game without breaking the deadlock. Finally, on 69 minutes the Bees found the net, as Ephron Mason-Clark let fly from 20 yards with his left foot and it nestled into the bottom left hand corner beyond Hinchliffe. Soon after taking the lead, Stockport almost found an equaliser as Elliot Osborne was released down the right hand side and his low cross was inches away from finding Devante Rodney on the slide. Attempting to add to their tally, Josh Walker wriggled away from a challenge in the box and his strike was blocked and went out for a Bees corner. With 15 minutes to go, Stockport levelled the score through Osborne’s point blank shot. Elito tried his hardest to give the Bees the lead once more as his 20 yard effort was inches wide. A substitution for Barnet saw Okem Chime replace Tutonda to make his league debut after impressing in the U18’s in recent weeks. With 5 minutes of normal time to play, Rodney cut inside towards the Barnet goal, and attempted to round the onrushing Scott Loach in goal for the Bees, but he was able to smother the ball and set his side on the attack. As the game became stretched, Stockport’s Osborne’s curling effort was just wide and from the resulting corner Mulhern bundled the ball home to give the Hatters the advantage in the 89th minute. The Bees will feel mighty hard done by not to take anything from a game that they dominated for large spells.

BARROW AWAY POSTCARD My long journey to Barrow started at 7:30am when I left to go to Kings Cross for my first trip of the day. I

was on a train by 8am heading north to Leeds. I arrived at around 10:30 and met my parents who had the car ready to head even further north. We took a nice scenic drive up the A65 (not that I would know since I spent

the whole journey catching up on sleep). We were near Barrow by about 1pm which my Mum loved as it gave her the perfect excuse to drag me and Dad round Booths. Afterwards, we got going to the ground and parked there just after 2pm. We braved the cold and walk in through the away turnstiles to take our place on the terrace in the wind. We watched the teams warm up and admired the views of the mountains as we had some food and eventually the teams were out for kickoff.

The game started pretty strongly with both teams looking competitive. Mason-Clark and Walker were making efforts to go forward whilst Loach was keeping shots out at the other end of the pitch. Unfortunately, on 21

minutes we were forced to make an early substitution due to a Mason-Clark injury (which I hope doesn’t keep him out of action for too long). On 27 minutes, the first goal of the game came when we allowed Barrow too

much space in the box meaning Kay was able to put the home side ahead. Jack Taylor tried to level things up

immediately afterwards but his shot was just saved by their keeper. On 31 minutes, it was Barrow who scored

again with what I must say was an outrageous strike from Rooney with an impressive curl. No more goals came in the first half meaning we had all the work to do in the second. The second did see chances from Mauro and Jack to go forward but the stand out player had to be Scott Loach who was pulling off the most unbelievable

saves to keep the opposition’s efforts out. On 85 minutes, we got ourselves a goal back when Jack Taylor took advantage of a defensive mix up to bang the ball into the goal. Despite throwing everything at an equaliser in the remaining 5 minutes and 6 of injury time, we were unable to find the goal and the game finished 2-1. The boys

came over to applaud the fans and I think I speak for everyone when I say how appreciative we were of Darren Currie coming over to the fans to discuss the game and thank us for our support.

My parents and I headed back to the car and drove back to Leeds. Thankfully for me I was spending the

weekend at home so the journey back was much shorter than the one I had done in the morning! We were home before 8pm giving us a lovely evening in with a takeaway and Strictly. The loss was disappointing considering how close we came at the end but against top of the league it was never going to be easy. We now need to stick with boys for Tuesday’s game.
