STILL WRITES

JOHN STILL

WRITES

Good afternoon everybody and a very warm welcome to The Hive London.

I would like to extend that welcome to Jerry Gill, his staff, the officials and supporters of Bath City for this First Round Buildbase FA Trophy tie. For everybody that is in this competition, every club, even from the Preliminary Rounds, they know that the goal is Wembley. For us, as a National League side, every manager is probably thinking it’s a good opportunity to get to Wembley.

We won’t be taking Bath City lightly. Last season, Brackley Town beat Bromley in the final and that just goes to show what can happen in this competition. Whoever you are, if you’re a National League team, be it Premier, North or South, if you have a good day against somebody who has a bad day, you’ve got a great chance of winning

We’re no different, we have to work our socks off to try and get ourselves into a position that we can have a fantastic day at the National Stadium. I know it’s Tottenham’s short-term home at the moment, but that place still has that magic feeling. Everyone here will be working their socks off to try and give us an opportunity to do that.

We have to make sure that we’re ready. Enjoy the game,

John 6

CAPTAIN’S NOTES

SKIPPER’S

NOTES

Hello everyone and welcome to The Hive London for today’s FA Trophy tie against Bath City! It’s a return to cup action, we’ve done well in the FA Cup so far this season and we’re hoping for more of the same in the FA Trophy. Good results in competitions like these can certainly help with form in the league. I know a lot of the boys who will be lining up against us this afternoon, they’re doing well this season. Whenever I’ve played against Bath

City, home or away, they’re always a tough team to play against. I’m expecting that again at the very least tomorrow. They’ll be looking to come here and cause an upset. The competition offers a shot at Wembley, so we’ll be taking this seriously. Any success is good success, whether that be in a cup competition or in the league.

We’re definitely aiming to progress today. Come on you Bees!

FOOTBALL CLUB THEN AND NOW Bath, as one of Europe’s world heritage cities has a long and distinguished history. Founded by King Bladud in 875BC it was a centre of Roman life and later, in Georgian times, became the capital of English high society. Bath City was formed in 1889 and played at the Belvoir Ground in East Twerton until the 1st World War. After this they played at Lambridge (now the site of Bath Rugby club’s training ground), returning to their roots in Twerton in 1932. The club has been at Twerton Park for the last 77 years. Originally the Club played in local football competitions, then joined the Western League in 1908, progressing to the Southern League in 1921. City played in the Western section of the Southern League, which they won in 1929/30 and 1932/33. During the 2nd World War City played in a number of unofficial competitions and became the only semiprofessional side to win a Football League trophy, the Second Division Northern Section Championship, finishing above Liverpool, Manchester United and Everton. After the war the Club were obliged to revert back to the Southern League.

12

Post-war the Club won the Southern League championship in 1959/60 and again in 1977/78, when they lost only two league matches during the whole season. In the first championship-winning season, in 1960, the Club played Brighton in the FA Cup when a record 18020 attended Twerton Park. In 1979 the Club became founder members of the Alliance Premier League, now the Football Conference, a league in which they remained until 1986/87. Relegated in that season they bounced back to the Conference two years later. Bath continued in the Conference until relegation to the Southern League in the 1996/97 season. Off the field, dramatic events have taken place over the last few years. Despite ten years of ground sharing with Bristol Rovers and good FA Cup runs, City continued to spend more than they earned. In December 1997, matters finally came to a head when, faced with mounting debts, the Club’s major shareholder negotiated for the Independent Supporters Association to take over the running of the Club. In 2002, the Supporters Society (‘Trust’) was set up with the help of ‘Supporters Direct’ and in one year raised nearly £250,000 from Trust members and private shareholders to buy back the club and regain control from the majority shareholder. Former City player and Wales international, Paul Bodin, managed the club for 3 seasons before making way for Alan Pridham in May 2001. The club narrowly avoided relegation by winning their final 2 matches of the 200102 season and improved to 14th place in 2002-03. After a poor start to 2003-04, Pridham was replaced by Gary Owers. He guided City to 6th place in 200405, but that season’s highlight was reaching the 2nd round of the FA Cup.

John Relish took over as manager in May 2005 and after coming second in 2006, City emphatically won the Southern League title in May 2007 to earn promotion to the Conference South. Relish left in October 2008 with his assistant, Adie Britton taking over. After successive 8th place finishes, City secured promotion back to the Conference National after finishing 4th and winning the play-off final at Twerton Park in 2010. After an excellent 10th place finish in their first season City endured a miserable season only climbing off the bottom of the division with one game to go. Back in Conference South, after brief flirtations with the top and bottom of the division, City finished 11th but in October 2012 saw a change of manager as Lee Howells took over from Adie Britton. Howells guided City to an improved 7th in 2013-14. The 2014-15 season saw City lose on penalties to North Ferriby United in the FA Trophy semi-final, the furthest they have got in the competition’s history. Fourteenth place was achieved in the league.

run of five wins in the final seven matches to preserve City’s National League South status. Throughout the 2016-17 season they flirted with the play-off positions but inconsistency ensured a 9th place finish. After a promising start to the 2017-18 season Owers left to take charge of Torquay United and former City player, Jerry Gill, was appointed and took the club to a respectable 9th position. Off the field the club has moved to Community ownership following a successful ‘Back the bid’ campaign during the past two years. This has given the club greater stability and the ability to move forward on and off the pitch with the redevelopment of Twerton Park the long term plan. City have a proud FA Cup history having reached the third round proper 6 times. Wins against league clubs along the way have included Crystal Palace, Exeter City, Notts County, Millwall, Southend United, Cardiff City, Hereford United and Grimsby Town.

Gary Owers was reappointed manager in February 2016 after the resignation of Lee Howells and he oversaw a

JERRY GILL MANAGER

Jerry was named as manager of Bath City in October 2017. This marked a return to Twerton Park having played well over 200 times for the club between 1990 and 1996. He began his career with Trowbridge Town before spending 18 months at Leyton Orient without making a first team appearance. He dropped back into non-league football with Weston Super Mare from where he joined City in December 1990. Was soon a regular in the side, both in midfield and at right-back, before moving onto Yeovil Town in July 1996. He spent just one season with the Glovers, helping them will promotion to the Conference and earning a call-up to the England National Game XI side. This attracted then interest of 1st Division Birminghan City, who paid ÂŁ30,000 for his services in July 1997. During his five seasons with the Blues they reached the League Cup Final and won promotion to the Premier League. After a loan spell with Northampton Town he joined them permanently in November 2002. A serious knee injury sidelined Jerry for the first half of the 200304 season and when he returned to fitness he joined Cheltenham Town in February 2004. He went on to spend four seasons with Cheltenham Town, helping them to promotion to League One via the play-offs. He made his first move into coaching with Forest Green Rovers in October 2008 before bringing playing career to a close at Redditch United for the 2009-10 season. In January 2010 he was named as Weymouth manager but, with the club already in financial meltdown, he resigned after 44 days. Since then he has held roles at Bristol Rovers, Birmingham City and Kidderminster Harriers, with his major appointments being at Norwich City as U18 and U23 Coach and then Wolverhampton Wanderers as U18 Coach. Jerry has held the FA UEFA A Coaching Diploma for 5 years.

ALEX JONES

ALEX JONES DIGRESSES BATH, ONLY A WINTER’S TALE

Sports Personality

FA Cup - Stop the Cavalry

I have never seen Bath City play at home. Still, I count Twerton Park on my list of 315 football grounds, for the years they were the home of Bristol Rovers. So I missed the 4-1 victory in 1990, almost a year to the day of my first Barnet game. Andy Clarke netted twice, and there were goals for Roger Willis and Dave Regis. I was present for the corresponding match in January, a 2-0 victory when Clarke once again scored along with the late Kevin Durham.

Tomorrow, hopefully, the nation will be wise and crown Geraint Thomas for his Tour de France triumph. I first saw him cycle in Hyde Park in 2007, as a youngster as part of the time trials. Then it was down to Greenwich the following morning when hundreds of cyclists zoomed past us on the first morning of the event. For the Olympics of 2012, I was back in Hyde Park. I missed the chance to cheer the great man a third time this summer when the Tour of Britain sped through Brecon, but our Mags knows far more about cycling than me, so made sure we were given a commentary accompanying the tv coverage in the Rheolau Arms Abercrave. A definite, posthumous winner this year is the incomparable Bobby Moore. He has been voted the Greatest Personality of All Time by Radio Times readers. Not that long before his passing, he commented for Capital Gold at Underhill alongside his good mate Jonathan Pearce. The pair were sat a few rows ahead of me, and frequently people would walk up and shake his hand, eager to press the flesh with the only man to raise the World Cup for England. Bobby had time for everyone, and if selfies had been invented at the time, would doubtless have posed with John, Paul, Patrick or any other Barnet fans. It was our first meeting with Carlisle and we won 4-2, nearly as dramatic as another 4-2 some thirty-five years previously, in which Bobby was involved.

After our victory against Stockport, the Bees have been rewarded with our first trip to Bramall Lane. When I went there, over twenty years ago, they sang a variation on Annie’s Song which mentioned a chip butty in a way that neither John Denver nor James Galway intended. More unusually the DJ played a tune, near to the Blades departing the tunnel, which rubbished Wednesday, declaring “there’s only one team in this town”.

December will be magic again Soon it will be Christmas, and the celebrity switching on of the lights here in the Ystradgynlais was Mr Lee Trundle. Idolised by Swansea City fans, he was known as Magic Daps. I saw him play on numerous occasions, most memorably he scored at the Millennium Stadium in 2006 when Swans defeated Carlisle 2-1. Magic Daps was subsequently fined when during the celebrations, he revealed a t-shirt which contained a rather naughty message to Cardiff City. The little tinker. Trundle is now 42 but still playing for Haverfordwest. Last season he was banging in the goals for Welsh League winners Llanelli.

25

BARNETFC.COM

Sheffield United have playoff ambitions. I watched the Swans’ Friday night victory there when the Jacks rightly applauded the victory. We shall have our work cut out. Coincidentally Joe Gibney, whose “Road to Wembley we are chronicling, will also see Welsh opposition, as Gillingham entertain Cardiff City. Good luck with that Joe, and don’t mention you know a Jack. Gillingham have never done me harm, and doubtless, Mrs Margaret Agate will be in attendance, but when the Gills play Crawley, the fixture is known as “El Chavico”.

I’LL BE TRAWLING THROUGH THE ARCHIVES TO FIND PLAYERS WHO HAVE PLAYED FOR BOTH BARNET AND OUR VISITORS. TODAY, WE LOOK AT THOSE WHO HAVE PULLED ON THE FAMOUS BLACK ‘N’ AMBER AND BATH CITY STRIPS.

Charlie CLOUGH

26

Born in Taunton, Charlie Clough started off his career with Bristol Rovers. Learning his trade predominantly as a centre-half, but also being deployed as right-back, the Englishman was at the heart of many non-league defences including Sutton United and Forest Green Rovers. It was with the vegan-crazed club that Charlie really put himself on the proverbial map; amassing 90 appearances across all competitions between January 2015 and January 2017, then caretaker duo Rossi Eames and Henry Newman brought the Somerset native to the Hive. Initially being used as a right-back under the pair, Charlie was soon reverted back to a centre-half in which we really saw his true capabilities. You could throw a kitchen sink at the man and I bet he would try head it away, that’s how much of a no nonsense old school type of defender he was. Used also by Kevin Nugent, Rossi Eames (again), Mark McGhee, Graham Westley and then Martin Allen, Clough proved to be a useful player for many of our managers during his year-and-a-half spell in North London, which came to an end when he was released following our relegation to the National League. Pre-Sutton, Forest Green Rovers and Dorchester Town, Clough had two loan spells with our visitors whilst he still at Bristol Rovers. Being loaned out to gain valuable experience with the likes of Chippenham Town and Mangotsfield Town, Charlie joined Bath City on March 1st 2011 for a two-month loan spell, where he netted twice in 11 games. At the start of the the 2011/12 season, Bath City once again wanted him, thus seeing him reunited with the club between August 2011 and December 2011, where he played a further 14 games in the league and FA cup. Charlie can now be found playing for fellow National League side Sutton United, where he has already played 22-times in the league this season. BARNETFC.COM

DANIELE ACCURSO

Glenn POOLE

Signed by Mark Stimson in the summer of 2010, the experienced Glenn Poole was brought into a youthful Barnet side to exert his expertise and knowledge onto some of our younger midfield outfits such as Sam Cox, Ricky Holmes and Sam Deering. Starting his career in the Tottenham youth academy, Glenn moved to Yeovil Town in 1999 in a bid to establish himself in senior football. It was during his time at Huish Park that the wingercum-central midfielder played for Bath City; In 2001, Poole played once for today’s visitors but failing to impress there, a move into the deeper depths of the non-league at Ford Town awaited him. An admirable one-goal every three games strike rate caught Thurrock’s attention and soon enough, Glenn was moving up the footballing ladder rather than falling down it. Spells with higher-tiered clubs such as Brentford, Grays Athletic, AFC Wimbledon and Rochdale came and went, before the Barking-born player moved to Barnet on 14th June 2010. Scoring against Charlton and Peterborough in pre-season friendlies and then against Chesterfield on the opening day of the season, Poole looked likely to make himself a key player in Stimson’s plans for the season. However after just 10 leagues appearances, including four as a substitute, a then 29-yearold Poole was released in January 2012, joining Braintree Town shortly after. Another spell with Thurrock passed before a move to Billericay Town came to fruition in quite sensational fashion. Signing for Billericay in December 2011, he played 151-times for the club, was appointed captain during the 2013/14 campaign and won the Isthmian League title in his debut season, eventually departing in the summer of 2015 after a phenomenal three-and-and-a-half years at the club.

MATCH REPORT

A scrappy game with few chances was snatched late on by the hosts through a single Danny Kedwell strike. The Bees had the first opportunity of the game when Harrison’s volley from Taylor’s corner was saved two minutes in. Cheek had a cross blocked by Sweeney at the other end before a barrage of rain really changed the game, making it difficult for either team to create a chance.

McDonald had a similar chance minutes later but again shot wide.

The rain would ease after the half hour and Sweeney was in the right place in the right time to clear Ebou Adams’ free kick.

Bettamer cut inside onto his left in the 75th minute, had a chance to shoot but didn’t, fed Johnson but his shot was blocked.

With virtually the last kick of the first 45, Whitely fired over from the edge of the box.

The deadlock was broken in the 84th minute when Kedwell got on the end of the ball over the top, had plenty of time to pick his spot and finished calmly past Cousins.

Barnet came out with more urgency after the break, Bettamer forcing Ashmore into a low save in the 46th minute after getting around the Ebbsfleet defence. On the hour, near interplay between Johnson and Fonguck allowed the latter to get a shot off but it pooped just over the bar. Jack Taylor hit the side netting which culminated the Bees best spell of pressure.

31

McDonald’s half volley was dragged wide of the left hand post before Fonguck forced a comfortable save from Ashmore.

Barnet mounted additional pressure after the goal, which almost allowed McDonald a chance to score on the counter but Cousins made himself big to save. With the last opportunity, Fonguck’s low shot forced Ashmore to scramble down to his right to keep it out.

TAKING THE MIC

THE ONE WITH THE WAGGLY TAIL A fair few issues back, I mentioned a personal liking for the “little guy” who steps out of nowhere to claim his fifteen minutes of fame, especially when it is in an unusual manner. Goalkeeper Jimmy Glass is one of my all-time favourites after prodding home the do-or-die goal that maintained Carlisle’s Football League status, but I also have a soft spot for a legend created a full 368 miles away at the opposite end of the country. It belongs to Bryn, and he was a German Shepherd. A police dog, for that matter. Bryn’s moment of glory came at Torquay’s Plainmoor on the final day of the 1986-87 season. Automatic promotion and relegation between Division Four and the Conference was at stake for the first time, on a one-up-one-down basis. The Gulls entered their last day fixture against Crewe a point clear of bottom club Burnley, and one behind Lincoln, but when the Alex raced into an early 2-0 advantage their position looked ropey to say the least. History now tells us that former double League Champions Burnley secured an unexpected 2-1 victory over play-off chasing Orient in front of an emotionally charged 15,781 crowd at Turf Moor to nudge off the bottom rung and preserve their rich heritage, but what transpired at Plainmoor was even more improbable.

had scored. The Alsatian, probably believing his handler was under threat, turned and sank his teeth into the Scot’s thigh, as McNichol – almost literally – felt the full force of the Law. His pain proved the Gulls’ gain, however. McNichol was down for five minutes receiving treatment, while more importantly his exhausted team mates gained a much-needed respite to re-group and re-energise. It was to prove a lifeline. McNichol was effectively reduced to a passenger and later needed 17 stitches, but in the playing time that was added on, Paul Dobson squeezed home the all-important equaliser. With Lincoln upended 2-0 at Swansea, the Gulls were safe on goal difference as the Imps hit the bottom of the table for the one and only time in the season…. but also the time when it mattered most. Bryn has been known ever since as The Dog That Saved Torquay. I guess you could say (cue the groans): every dog has his day.

Jim McNichol managed to pull one back for the Gulls just after half-time, but they still needed another as the clock ticked towards 90 minutes. Then, it happened. McNicholl was chasing the ball near the touchline, close to where Bryn was patrolling following an earlier mini pitch invasion when the same player 35

MATCH REPORT

Barnet booked their place in Round Three of the Emirates FA Cup after beating National League North side Stockport County 1-0 at The Hive London this weekend. Dan Sparkes came in for Charlee Adams in the Bees’ only change from last weekend’s defeat against Gateshead and made an immediate impact, opening the scoring inside seven minutes. That goal proved to be the winner as John Still’s men progress to the Third Round for the first time in a decade. The first chance of the game fell to the Bees when Byron Harrison won a free-kick from outside the area. Sparkes stepped up to take before looping the ball over the wall, narrowly falling wide of the post. It didn’t matter though as the Barnet number 11 found himself on the score-sheet three minutes later. A cross was whipped in by Cheye Alexander and he was on hand to head the ball home to give the hosts an early lead. Alexander could have grabbed one himself soon after. The full-back did well to cut inside before letting fly on the edge of the box but it could only found the arms of Ben Hinchliffe. Adam Thomas had an equaliser in his sights on 23 minutes, curling the ball on target but it was comfortable enough for Mark Cousins. The Bees nearly doubled their lead soon after when a Sparkes corner found the head of Dan Sweeney but his attempt was blocked on the line. Another chance fell the hosts’ way four minutes before the break when Sparkes whipped a low ball into Harrison but his effort from close range flew over.

37

Despite Darren Stephenson’s dangerous low cross in stoppage time that forced Cousins into a save, Barnet went into the break a goal up. Wes Fonguck produced the first chance of the second half, curling the ball from the edge of the box but it deflected out for a corner. Elliott Johnson then whipped in a delightful ball from the left before Harrison’s header was flagged for offside but Hinchliffe made an extraordinary save to deny him nonetheless. Soon after, a misplaced back-pass found its way to Josh Walker who let rip from distance but it was tipped over by the Stockport ‘keeper. Frank Mulhern then had a glorious chance to equalise just past the hour mark after Cousins lost grip of the ball, falling to the County man who poked it wide from close range. Craig Robson, who scored in both games against Bristol Rovers in the previous round, tried his luck from range with 15 minutes remaining but Hinchliffe got down low to save. With three minutes remaining, substitute Manny Duku saw his strike from outside the area fly over the bar moments before receiving a yellow for a foul. Despite late pressure from the visitors, the Bees held on to clinch the win. The draw takes place on Monday night where Barnet will find out who they will play in the next round.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

WHAT’S THE BUZZ JOSH PALMER

Last week, Port Vale defender Leon Legge revealed that he had 4 epileptic seizures in one day. The former Tonbridge Angels, Brentford and Gillingham player posted on Twitter: “Epilepsy won’t get the better of me and I will continue to be an ambassador for people with the condition” after suffering the seizures on Sunday two weeks ago. The 33-year-old was taken to hospital and has since spent the week recovering at home. He was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 16, and is now an ambassador for charity Young Epilepsy. He signed for the Valiants over the summer, having previously played over 125 times for Cambridge United.

Our rivals Enfield Town have signed a club legend of another of our local rivals. The Towners have brought Marc Weatherstone to Donkey Lane, with the defender having made over 460 appearances for Wingate and Finchley. Weatherstone originally left the Summers Lane club in the summer of 2016, after 9 years and 435 appearances, moving on to Dulwich Hamlet. He spent 2 seasons at the south London side, making over 100 appearance and helping them to gain promotion to the National League South last season. However, over this summer he opted to return to Wingate, stating that the travel time to the Hamlet was too big. He went on to make a few dozen more appearances for the Blue, before moving to Enfield this week. Ironically, today sees Finchley host Dulwich in the FA Trophy.

David Flitcroft, manager of League 2 side Mansfield Town, has hit out clubs, saying that they have a “lack of patience shown to managers in modern football”. His criticisms came ahead of the Stags’ home tie against rivals Notts County last weekend, which they won 2-0, with County currently being on their third manager of the season, which has only been going for 4 months. “Everyone wants things instantly now. You can put a box set on and watch it for 10 hours instead of waiting for a week for the next episode” he said. “You used to have to chat a bird up but now you can just swipe left or right on Tinder. It’s the way life is. Nobody’s got any patience anymore. There’s no respect for building or time. People just want things now. When I was learning to drive I worked in a factory to save up for my car and for driving lessons but people get them given as Christmas presents now”.

DAVID FLITCROFT

Bromley have continued their signing spree this week by adding Zavon Hines to their ranks. This comes after the boss of this former club Chesterfield, Martin Allen, allowed him to leave. The striker, who previously made 31 appearances for West Ham United, including 22 in the Premier League, opted to return to London to be nearer to his home. “It’s a fantastic bit of business for the Club and there’s been a lot of hard work behind the scenes to get these deals done” said Ravens boss Neil Smith. “Zavon is a top quality player with the experience we need, and did very well playing against us last week”. The south London side have also taken former Newcastle United, Havant and Waterlooville and Port Vale winger JJ Hooper on loan from Grimsby Town, and former Bee Luke Coulson on a permanent deal from Ebbsfleet United.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

Last weekend saw the third round of the FA Vase completed. As a result, the draw for the fourth round has been made. All ties are due to be played on the 5th January. Biggleswade overcame Tring Athletic in a replay to become the only one of our local sides left in the competition, and therefore have set up a tie with Stowmarket Town. Also in the draw is Northwich Victoria, who will travel to Newcastle Benfield, Coventry United who will be hosting Leicester Nirvana, Histon vs Lye Town, and Cray Valley Paper Mills, who take on Baffins Milton Rovers

SOL CAMPBELL

Having recently appointed former Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell as manager, Macclesfield Town have appointed another former Premier League and international star in the former of Mark Kennedy to their coaching staff. The former Liverpool, Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers defender, who also played 34 times for the Ireland national team, joins the Silkmen at the very bottom of the Football League. The Cheshire side charged to the National League title last season, finishing ten points ahead of second placed Tranmere Rovers, winning 27 league games and losing just 8. However, their form from last season hasn’t carried over to their current campaign, with the side having won just 3 and lost 14 of their opening 21 league games. Their abysmal form leaves the currently with 13 points, 3 off of closest competitors Notts County, and 6 off of Cambridge Untied just outside the relegation zone.

Last weekend saw Accrington Stanley blitz their home attendance record just 8 months after last breaking it, despite their game being abandoned. The sides’ previous home attendance record was set at 4,753 in a game against Lincoln City, who they beat 1-0 at the end of April this year, a game which saw them be crowned champions of League 2, and secure promotion to League 1 for the first time. However, thanks to Sunderland’s 2,604 travelling fans, Stanley beat this record by 504, as 5,257 fans witnessed Sunderland take the lead in the 63rd minute, before the home side equalised 6 minutes later. However, just 5 minutes after their goal, referee Oliver Langford called off the game due to a waterlogged pitch from the heavy rain. There were several pitch inspections before the game, but all passed and the game went ahead. Heavy rain started during the game, with many fans stood on the terrace of the ground that doesn’t have a roof.

40

Following the news of a takeover of the club after the departure of controversial chairman Glenn Tamplin, Jake Robinson has become the most recent Billericay Town player in a line of high profile players to leave the Essex club. Recent weeks has seen the departure of the likes of Dean Inman, Scott Doe, Adam Cunnington and Ricky Modeste, players who all have had experience much higher up the pyramid than the sixth tier. Robinson leaves ‘Ricay to join up with former club manager Harry Wheeler at Maidstone United. Robinson had scored 57 goals in all competitions last season, helping the side to the Bostik Isthmian League title, as well as some impressive cup runs. His 13 goals so far this season have helped the side to climb up to 5th in the National League South. He also helped Brighton and Hove Albion to playoff victory in the Second Division back in the 2003/04 season.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

Ahead of his sides’ replay with Tranmere Rovers on Monday night, Southport manager Liam Watson jokingly remarked that he should have travelled to Barcelona to produce a scouting report at the Nou Camp. The winner of the replay between the Merseyside rivals will host Tottenham Hotspur in the third round next month, and Spurs played the Catalan giants away in the Champions League midweek. “Spurs are playing at Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday night, I think that must be worth a trip to the Nou Camp for a scouting mission”, he said. “Sadly, though, I don’t think the owners will see it that way”. Ironically. Watson himself was actually abroad when the draw was made two weeks ago, on holiday in Dubai. “I flew out to Dubai straight after the Tranmere game but was waiting nervously by my phone for any news. The next thing I know everything’s gone hysterical on the WhatsApp group. It was madness!”

Bostik Isthmian League Division One South East side Greenwich Borough have gone down an unconventional route of appointing a new manager. With the sudden departure of boss Luke Medley last week, the club went on a search for a new manager. But having not found a manager in time for their away game at East Grinstead Town last weekend, they opted to appoint an interim manager. However, when most clubs do this, they normally opt for an assistant manager or a coach, however the south London side opted for their physio, Huseyin Torgut. The side sat in 18th position out of 20 teams, but despite Turgut’s lake of managerial skills, he was able to guide the side to a 3-1 victory.

THE RECKLESS GUIDE

THE RECKLESS GUIDE TO

Boreham Wood

26 • 12 • 2018 - KICK OFF: 1:00PM LOCATION: MEADOW PARK, BROUGHINGE ROAD, BOREHAMWOOD HERTFORDSHIRE WD6 5AL

PHONE: 0208 953 5097

KEY PERSONNEL

CAR PARKING

The current Gaffer is Luke Garrard who has been at the club as Manager since October 2014. He started as a Youth at Tottenham before spells with Swindon Town, Wimbledon and Borehamwood (where he made over 150 appearances). I do believe he is the youngest manager in the top five Pyramid?

The Car Park at the ground is for Officials only but the aforementioned Brook Road pay and display is behind the South Terrace. £2.20 for three hours or £5.20 for the day. The immediate surrounding streets are residents only and there are many restrictions locally but there is parking available.

BRIEF DIRECTIONS BY ROAD From the A1 north or southbound exit at the A5135 Elstree Way signposted Borehamwood town centre. Carry straight on at the two mini roundabouts and you should see the Police, Fire, and Ambulance stations on the left. On the right, you will pass the Venue Leisure Complex. At the next roundabout take the second exit (Brook Road) which is also signposted Borehamwood FC. Just after the pay and display car park on your right turn right into Broughinge Road and follow the road around to the right and the club’s main entrance will be on your right.

EATING AND DRINKING LOCALLY The Three Lions bar at the club is usually for home fans only and very likely for our visit as this match is segregated for supporters. The club recommends the town centre Hart and Spool Wetherspoons which is 10 minutes walk from the ground or the Wishing Well. There are numerous pubs and eats locally.

DIRECTIONS BY TRAIN AND BUS The nearest station is Elstree and Borehamwood. Turn right out of the station and continue through Borehamwood High Street (Shenley Road). After about a mile you will pass one of the unmentionable Scottish sounding burger joints before turning left into Brook Road at the roundabout and then follow the directions above. The 107 bus route from Barnet Church stops outside Elstree Studios which is a 5-minute walk to the ground

148-150 Shenley Rd, Borehamwood WD6 1EQ

THE RECKLESS GUIDE

GROUND DESCRIPTION The club moved from their Eldon Avenue ground to Broughinge Road in 1963. Arsene Wenger officially opened the West Stand in 2014 which replaced the old covered terrace. It is a smart structure with room for around 1,200. It has quite a steep rake from its eight steps and therefore good viewing lines. The Main Stand opposite has been in existence since 1999 and holds around 500. Both ends are shallow uncovered terraces and our home for the afternoon will be the South Terrace and some seating in the West Stand but this is to be confirmed.

OVERNIGHT STAY FACTOR You are kidding, aren’t you?

ADMISSION PRICES The game is an all ticket game and tickets are now on sale from Boreham Wood online ticket office. ADULTS £18.00 CONCESSIONS £13.00 UNDER 18 £8.00 Please note there will be a £1.00 booking fee added to these prices.

CELEBRITY WATCH

In 2012 we met in a pre-season friendly but competitively... Distress at the Herts Senior Cup Semi Final in February 2004. An early goal from Soloman Henry and a Tony Taggart effort put Barnet in control but Wood pulled the tie back to 2-2 for good old extra time. Guess who lost 3-2 with a goal in injury time? In fact, we have only faced The Wood in Herts Senior Cup ties over the years apart from a meeting in the world famous Studio Cup in October 1973. Barnet easily won the first leg 4-1 at Underhill thanks to goals from Les Eason (2), Tony Turley and Dickie Plume. The competition was held in such high esteem that the second leg was never played! I always thought that the reason was that we had a pressing top of the table Southern Premier clash at Grantham the following week or that Barry Silkman’s hair hadn’t dried in time (a really silly joke for us real oldies – sorry).

The list of world-famous celebrities who have been spotted in the Wood is mind-boggling - Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks, Kevin Costner, Raquel Welch, Reg Varney, Christopher Lee, Jack Nicholson, Bob Hoskins, Sean Connery, Gregory Peck, Christopher Reed, Carrie Fisher, and Nina BadenSemper. It is rather spooky that they have all been seen in the same small area i.e. the vicinity in and around the world famous Elstree Film Studios which has produced numerous blockbusting films over the years. The old studios are just an Eddie Stein corner kick from the ground.

JOHN MARGERRISON

OUR LAST MEETING & MEMORIES

This should be more like ‘Soap Watch’ as the area is littered with fake Cockney’s who star in BBC1’s EastEnders which is filmed locally. The ground has been used as a scene backdrop on numerous occasions. Barnet legend of the 1980’s John Margerrison was born in the Wood, spread it Marge!

THE HIVE FOUNDATION

In the Community

Premier League Primary Stars Girls’ Football Festival On Tuesday 11th December the Bees in the Community team welcomed nine schools to The Hive for our year 3 & 4 PL Primary Stars Girls Football tournament. It was a great event with over 70 girls participating on the day and it was fantastic to see some players compete in their first ever football match. The tournament was tightly contested throughout the group stages and into the semi-finals also. We finished with a battle for first and second place between Rhodes and Orion Primary schools. After a tough final, Rhodes Primary School emerged victorious. The Bees in the Community team would like to congratulate Rhodes Primary School on the win and thank all players, teachers and parents that attended the event and supported the growth of the women’s game!

Secret Santa Present Distribution Locally based Edgware accountants, Kajaine Limited, have put a twist on Secret Santa and teamed up with Local Charity Young Barnet Foundation to collect and distribute donated presents this Christmas. This initiative has grown, and more and more people and organisations are joining in. We, here at Barnet Football Club are supporting this initiative too with our players and are now sharing the appeal so that more presents can be collected for this worthy cause. The Barnet FC squad will be joining staff of Kajaine and Barnie, Young Barnet’s Mascot, in delivering presents to community groups across Barnet before Christmas. So, we would love if you could support the Secret Santa Toy Drive and make sure children across Barnet have the opportunity to open a present this Christmas. Over 20,000 children across Barnet are living in poverty. If you would like to donate a gift, you can purchase one online or drop a present at the addresses below. Alternatively, you can also leave presents at Barnet Football Club this Saturday and these will be collected after the match against Bath City. You can also make a financial donation online. Any donations prior to Christmas will go directly to buying additional presents. Please visit www.youngbarnetfoundation.org.uk for more information. EBBSFLEET AWAY POSTCARD I was thankful that the weekend I was coming home from university for Christmas was the same weekend we were playing someone close to London. This made it easy for my parents to come and meet me on Saturday morning at about 11am to pack the car with my stuff before having a nice drive through different parts of London as we made our way to Ebbsfleet (though I wasn’t really sure where it was). As per usual, I fell asleep in the car and didn’t wake up again until about 1:30pm when we arrived near Ebbsfleet. We parked at the train station and walked to the ground which was nearby. I had time to buy a badge and programme before going through the away turnstile to the ground. Despite the ground being unsegregated, us Barnet fans congregated on the uncovered terrace behind the goal in the wild rain ready for kick off. The first half started and was quite dreary from both sides with the wet and windy weather helping no one. The first big moment arrived towards the end of the half when Dan Sweeney cleared an Ebbsfleet free kick off the line and the half finished 0-0. At half time, a warm hot chocolate was much appreciated. The teams came out for the second half as the rain died off and I was hoping we would be able to take advantage of the game in the second half. We showed a desire to do this with the introduction of Shaq. However, unfortunately it was Ebbsfleet who took advantage of the game on 84 minutes after a mistake in defence. We had attempts going forward from Johnson, Taylor and Sweeney in the remainder of the game but unfortunately it wasn’t our day and the game finished 1-0 to them. We walked back to the car in the cold and made our way back up the A1 stopping in Peterborough for tea where we bumped into Leeds, Hull and Huddersfield fans all heading our way! We carried on home and made it back to Leeds for about 11pm. Though it was disappointing to lose, it was a scrappy game and hopefully we can put it right this Saturday.
