DEAN BRENNAN

I N T E R I M

HEAD COACH DEAN BRENNAN Dean, we host table-toppers Stockport County this weekend. How are you feeling ahead of the game? “I am delighted to be back after the Covid-19 situation we have had recently. Everyone has tested negative ahead of training. “We have had the last week off which is not ideal preparation but that is the world we are living in at this moment in time. “We are not complaining and are looking forward to Saturday. “If anyone finishes above Stockport County, I believe that they will be the Champions because they have the best squad and an excellent manager. “Since the last time we played them, they have been working harder without the ball and have a better defensive structure. They also have some excellent Football League players. “It is going to be a really difficult day for us but a great chance to see how far we have come.” Stockport have won their previous eight games. How do we combat the confidence they will be coming here with? “We have to match them for work effort and get in their face. “It is important that we make it difficult for them and show our attributes when in possession.

DEAN BRENNAN

“We have to stop crosses coming into the box. Every team in this division has weaknesses and we will do our best to exploit them.”

“We do not have that at the moment and it is very important we bring in better than what we have got.

We beat them earlier in the season and I am sure we will be going in with the belief that we can do it again?

“Teddy has a good chance to start on Saturday and he is a good player who is very athletic.

“We always go into matches with belief although it will be a different test for us this time.

“Teddy will give us speed in the wide areas and can defend one-on-one really well. We are all delighted with the signing.”

“They have a different manager and have changed their structure.

We have a lot of games coming up in a short space of time so are we still looking to strengthen the squad?

“Stockport are flying with confidence, and we have had such a stop-start last four league games.

“Yes, we need to upgrade and get better. We have not got the finances to go out and bid for players, but that does not bother me.

“We have a really busy schedule coming up now, so it is key that we step up and perform.”

“If a player that comes in is not better than what we already have, the respect is not there within the group.

Joe Widdowson scored and suffered a nasty injury in the reverse fixture. How is his recovery going? “Joe’s recovery is going really well. He had his first operation before Christmas and his second one is due in the next four weeks, so hopefully that will be successful. “He is always in and around the place and spends a lot of time in the gym and treatment room. It is a slow recovery but is going well so far.” It has been nearly two weeks since our last game. How might that affect us this Saturday? “Yes, it does affect your momentum and not many teams come out of Covid-19 and win games. “We have to get back to our old levels and be consistent in our performances.” We have signed Teddy Howe since the last time we spoke. What will he bring to the team? “Teddy is an upgrade and we want two players for every position.

“We want better players coming into the team so we can raise the bar and improve as one. “We are hoping to bring some players in but we have to be patient.” Given that this Saturday’s game will be the first in almost two weeks, how much are you looking forward to getting back amongst the fixtures? “It is a great fixture for us and we are all looking forward to it. “They are the benchmark in this division and we have to match their work effort and stick to our gameplan. “The first goal will be huge, like it was against Chesterfield. “This will be different to our last home game though because Stockport will try and go round and through us. Their tempo is excellent. “We know what to expect and it is a game we should enjoy. If we work hard and get after them, hopefully we can win the football match.”

BARNET OVER 50’S BARNET WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM We are pleased to say that there are now two defibrillators to look after at The Hive London. We had a visit from Saul at London Ambulance to teach us how to use them during our Tuesday and Friday sessions which was an amazing experience. We all gained a lot of information from the sessions but hope that we never have to put it into practice. The Barnet Walking Football Team also had its initial visit from Sak Rafique of the Orange Ball Me Fit Programme who will coach us in improving mental fitness leading to positive mental health. The course is wonderfully paid for by the Middlesex FA. We look forward to visiting Aldershot Town next week where we will play Aldershot’s Walking Football Team before enjoying some lunch with them. The home team is also giving us 10 matchday tickets to cheer the Bees on! To join us, please email: BarnetWft@yahoo.com We play on Tuesday’s 19:30-20:30 and Friday’s 14:00-15:00. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you at our sessions soon!

THE OPPOSITION

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

Established in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers, in 1890 the name was changed to Stockport County to reflect the town gaining County Borough status. After winning the Lancashire League in 1900, the County gained admittance to the Football League, drawing their first match 2-2 away to Leicester Fosse (now Leicester City). After finishing in the bottom three in their first four seasons, County failed to gain re-election in 1904 and so spent a season in the Lancashire Combination; they won the League at the first time of asking and made an immediate return to the professional ranks. County would be proud Football League members for more than a century. Joining the League meant the club soon outgrew their ground behind the Nursery Inn on Green Lane in Heaton Norris and, in 1902, they moved south of the River Mersey to Edgeley Park, then home of Stockport RLFC. County have played there ever since. Hatmaking was an established industry in north Cheshire & southeast Lancashire by the 16th century. By the late 19th century Stockport had become a national centre for the trade, and by 1900 County’s nickname of ‘The Hatters’ had become synonymous with the club Having played in a variety of kit colours in the club’s early years, usually a variation on blue & white, County switched to white shirts and black shorts from the ’30s until the mid ’60s. Throughout this

period they were often referred to as the Lilywhites. In 1965 flamboyant chairman Vic Bernard, as part of his GO GO GO COUNTY revolution, reintroduced the Hatters’ famous royal blue strip; colours they still adopt today. The club stayed in the 4th Division doldrums until the turn of the 90s, when Uruguayan manager Danny Bergara turned the Hatters into regular top-of-the-table challengers. Promotion came in 1991, and was followed by four visits to Wembley in two years – twice in playoff finals, twice in the Football League Trophy. Unfortunately County lost on each occasion. Following Bergara’s departure in 1995, Dave Jones took charge and gave the club its most memorable season. In 1996/97, the Hatters won four games against Premiership opposition, including a 1-0 win at Middlesbrough in the League Cup semi-final – unfortunately, the tie was lost 2-1 on aggregate. Other runs in the FA Cup and League Trophy meant County played almost 70 games that season, and finished 2nd in the Second Division – the large amount of games almost certainly costing them the title. After Jones’ departure for Southampton, County consolidated in the First Division until relegation in 2002. What followed was a largely downward spiral back to the bottom division, twice finishing a season on just 26 points, and by Boxing Day 2005 County were well adrift at the bottom of the Football League.

THE OPPOSITION

In came former player Jim Gannon as manager, who led the team to a remarkable run of form and, with an incredibly tense 0-0 draw on the final day against Carlisle, eventual safety. This was followed by a promotion push in 2006/07, when County memorably set a new professional record of 9 consecutive wins without conceding. But promotion was just out of touch, with a playoff place being denied by Bristol Rovers in the dying minutes of the season despite County winning 5-0 at Darlington. That success finally came the next season. After finishing fourth, Gannon’s side beat Wycombe in the semi-finals followed by a thrilling 3-2 win over neighbours Rochdale, finally ending the club’s hoodoo at Wembley. Unfortunately, the Hatters couldn’t build on that success and went in to administration before the final game of the season at Brighton. In 09/10 administration took its toll, and County finished on a new record low of 25 points and were relegated back to the bottom flight. In the summer of 2010 the club was taken out of administration by a group of local business people, ensuring the club’s survival. However, fortunes took a downturn on the pitch and the Hatters finished bottom of League Two, meaning that they would compete outside the Football League for the first time since 1905. During 2011, Liverpool-based businessman Tony Evans headed up a consortium of new investors in the club, who appointed former German international Dietmar Hamann as manager. However, following the consortium’s failure to take charge, Hamann’s squad struggled in the league and in November he was replaced by former manager Jim Gannon. The size of the task ahead of Gannon was even bigger than the one in 2006, and the team initially continued to struggle but found resurgent form in Spring. Safety was secured with a 1-1 draw at home to Braintree, allowing the Hatters to enjoy a peaceful summer for the first time in four years. However, that stability didn’t last long and in 2012-13 more financial issues off the pitch restricted the squad on it. With his team in the lower half of the table, Gannon was sacked in January 2013 and replaced by Bosnian coach Darije Kalezic. Unfortunately results got worse, and with County staring at relegation he was replaced by former Gateshead manager Ian Bogie, but he too could not stop the slide. A 4-0 defeat to Kidderminster Harriers saw Stockport County relegated to the Conference North, meaning the Hatters would be playing regional football for the first time since 1905. Bogie left the club after a run of poor results and was replaced by

County stalwart Alan Lord. Lord achieved the feat of stabilising a club in free-fall, securing the team’s place in the division – which had at times looked uncertain – and guiding the club to a safe mid-table finish in the 2014/15 season. Lord’s achievement turning the club around and pointing it in the right direction may well prove pivotal in County’s history. Towards the end of the 2014/15 season Lord moved to become Director of Football, and paved the way for the next man to come in and continue County’s progress. In May 2015 County secured the services of Neil Young as manager. Young and his management team, headed by Gary Jones, made their name with successes at Colwyn Bay and Chester City. Young broke several records with his Chester side in the Conference North including achieving the most wins (33), fewest defeats (3), the most points (107), the most goals scored in a season (103) and the best goal difference (+71). Chester also broke the record for the longest unbeaten streak. In January 2016, Jim Gannon signed an 18-month contract to return to Edgeley Park following the resignation of Neil Young. Mike Flynn, Dave Conlon and Jordan Felgate were named as his coaching staff. After winning the Cheshire Senior Cup in his first season back in charge, Jim led the Club to promotion from the National League North in 2019, as the Club won their first league title in 52 years with a 3-0 final day win over Nuneaton. In January 2020, the Club were taken over by local businessman Mark Stott, who upon buying the Club announced plans for an increased playing budget, a return to full-time football and new full-time training facilities alongside an ambition to return to the Championship in seven years. In January 2021, the Club parted company with manager Jim Gannon, before appointing Brighton U23s boss Simon Rusk as his replacement. The Club would go on to finish 3rd in the National League after a club record 18-game unbeaten run, before losing 1-0 in the play-off semi-final to Hartlepool United. In November 2021, the Club appointed former captain and former Hartlepool United manager Dave Challinor as the club’s new firstteam manager, after parting company with Simon Rusk following a difficult start to the new season. He went unbeaten in his first six games as County boss, including a famous 5-3 FA Cup First Round win against League One Bolton Wanderers at Edgeley Park.

THE OPPOSITION

THE OPPOSITION

MANAGER

DAVE CHALLINOR A former Stockport County captain, Dave Challinor played for the Club between 2002-2004 as a centre-half, and had successful spells at Tranmere and Bury as a player. Since stepping into management, Challinor has forged a successful career throughout the lower divisions, with five previous promotions to his name. Most recently, he led Hartlepool back to the English Football

League in his first full season at Victoria Park, adding to promotions with Colwyn Bay and AFC Fylde, as well as an FA Trophy win with the Coasters in 2019. The 46-year-old was appointed as manager of Stockport on a twoand-a-half-year deal at the start of November last year and currently has his side in 1st place of the Vanarama National League.

ben hinchliffe BEN HINCHLIFFE JOINED THE HATTERS Ben joined the Hatters in May 2016 after four very successful years with AFC Fylde, including four successive Play-Off campaigns and being named in the Divisional Team of the Year every season. Over his time at County, Ben has now made over 200 appearances for the Club and remains a firm fan favourite. The 2020/21 season was perhaps his most successful in a County shirt yet, as he kept 19 clean sheets in the National League – more than any other goalkeeper, as we missed out on promotion in the play-offs.

ashley palmer ASHLEY PALMER MOVED FROM GUISELEY IN THE SUMMER Centre half Ash joined striker Frank Mulhern in making the move from Guiseley in the summer. Ash spent two years with the Lions, making more than 70 appearances and captaining the side. In the 2018/19 season, Ash was a crucial part of County’s defence that won the National League North, captaining the Hatters on certain occasions as well as proving a goal threat, even scoring the opener in the 3-0 win at Nuneaton which clinched promotion. The centre-half enjoyed another successful year last season, making 41 appearances in both a back three and back four, and matching his tally for the previous season by scoring six times.

antoni sarcevic SARCEVIC HAS FOOTBALL LEAGUE EXPERIENCE Midfielder Antoni Sarcevic joins Stockport County after an impressive career at Bolton Wanderers, having led the side to promotion from League two last season as captain. After scoring 8 goals in 35 appearances, this marked the fourth time throughout his career in which Sarcevic has been involved in promotion from the fourth division, having achieved promotion with Plymouth Argyle the previous season. Sarcevic originally came through the ranks at Woodley Sports, playing alongside County Captain, Liam Hogan before spells at Crewe, Chester and Fleetwood Town. During his time at Fleetwood, Manchester-born Antoni topped the club’s assist charts, while also scoring 15 goals, including the winner in the 2014 League two play-off final. Most recently, Sarcevic joined Bolton Wanderers where he was immediately made captain and played a key part in their run of 16 wins out of their final 22 games to clinch promotion. He went on to score a further 3 goals in 14 appearances the following season before making the move to Edgeley Park.

alex reid REID SIGNED A ONE-YEAR DEAL AT COUNTY LAST SUMMER 24-year-old striker Alex joined County on a free transfer from Stevenage in the Summer of 2020, signing a one-year deal at Edgeley Park. Capable of playing on the left-hand side of the attack as well as the central striker himself, versatile forward Alex spent the 2019/20 season out on loan at National League Clubs Dagenham & Redbridge and Ebbsfleet United, scoring an impressive 11 goals in 23 starts in all competitions. Alex enjoyed a sensational first season at Edgeley Park, finishing the campaign as our joint-top scorer with 21 goals in all competitions, earning him a new two-year deal. Only three players scored more than his 17 National League goals during the 2020/21 season.

As we have previously mentioned, we are interested in the ‘Barnetification’ of Legends Bar. We would like to start planning with the club so we can see what we have available to display in the bar.

It hasn’t been without issues though and the current approach to serving it needs changing. A more permanent solution is now being sought from the brewery. We hope this will make the Legends Bar a more enticing option for supporters.

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH stockport county

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH

stockport county The Bees and Stockport County have shared the spoils in their eight games in North London. Both teams have won three matches and there have been two draws. In fact, both sides have also scored nine goals at Barnet. There have been three games at The Hive London before today: a 1-0 win for the Bees in the Emirates FA Cup in 2018/19 and 2-1 wins for County in the Vanarama National League in both 2019/20 and 2020/21. The Hatters have done better at Edgeley Park, winning four games, with two drawn and two being won by the Bees. However, Barnet came out on top in the latest game there, earlier this season. The two sides have met twice in the third tier (the first matches between them, in 1993/94), eight times in the fourth tier (between 2005/06 and 2010/11), then once in the Emirates FA Cup (2018/19) and finally five times to date in the Vanarama National League (from 2019/20 onwards). Adam Birchall and Ephron Mason-Clark have both scored twice against County, the only Bees players to do so. Liam Hatch, Ephron Mason-Clark and Harry Taylor have played against Stockport most often for Barnet (five appearances).

Few players have represented both clubs. Ken Charlery made 10 appearances for Stockport at the end of the 1996/97 season, before moving to the Bees in the close season. He played 142 games in black and amber over the next three seasons, netting 39 times, before leaving in September 2000. He did not play for either club in fixtures between the two. Keith Alexander, the first black professional manager, played 86 matches for the Bees in 1986/87 and 1987/88, scoring 22 goals. He later played 13 games for County in autumn 1990. Again, he did not play in the fixture between the Bees and Stockport County. More recently, Anthony Pulis played 13 games for County in 2010/11, on loan from Southampton. This spell included a game against the Bees. That loan period was immediately followed by a similar loan period at Barnet, where he played four games. Mark McGhee, who managed Barnet for two months in 2017/18, was an assistant manager for the Hatters from January 2021 until he left at the same time as Simon Rusk.

All the games at Edgeley Park against the Bees have had attendances of over 4,000, other than last season when spectators were not admitted due to Covid-19. The largest crowd at Stockport was 6,056 in November 2005. The highest attendance at Barnet was later the same season when 3,873 saw the game at Underhill. The latest game between the two was at Edgeley Park in October 2021. Barnet scored first through Joe Widdowson, and Oli Crankshaw equalised before half-time. However, Reiss Greenidge’s second-half goal saw the Bees win 2-1. Both sides had a player dismissed, Joe Widdowson sustained a serious injury that has kept him out since that game, and after the match, Stockport parted company with manager Simon Rusk. The Barnet team was: Aston Oxborough, Jordan Thomas, Reiss Greenidge, Harry Taylor, Joe Widdowson (Mason Bloomfield), Sam Woods, Mitch Brundle, Kian Flanagan, Wes Fonguck (Serhat Tasdemir), Ephron Mason-Clark, Adam Marriott (Ben Richards-Everton). The crowd was 4,363.

CLASSIC ENCOUNTER WITH

THE HATTERS

On October 6th 2007, Barnet beat Stockport County 4-2 at Edgeley Park in a fourth-tier Football League game. Adam Birchall scored a brace, but Jason Puncheon, who scored for Crystal Palace in the 2016 FA Cup Final, was the architect of the Bees’ success. It was Barnet’s fourth consecutive victory and meant they had gone seven games undefeated. The Hatters lost their unbeaten home record. There was a spine-tingling moment even before the start. Puncheon came out first for the warm-up, carrying a ball. With just a handful of visiting supporters looking on, he began doing kick-ups and kept them going from the tunnel on the halfway line to the far corner flag at the away end. It was mesmerising, as though the ball was on a piece of string, and he put his huge skill to devastating effect during the game too.

parry. Birchall was on hand to take advantage and fired home from 10-yards. Puncheon continued to torment County, but it was Josh Wright who made it 3-1 after 62 minutes. Nicky Nicolau crossed and Wright finished by the far post. It was his only goal for the Bees in what was eventually a 35-game spell on loan from Charlton (he went on to play for a host of clubs including Scunthorpe, Gillingham, Millwall, Bradford City and Leyton Orient). Barnet’s fourth of the afternoon came in the 84th minute. Ashley Carew fired a powerful shot from outside the box on the right, which was going wide until a wicked deflection saw the ball whistle into the net past a helpless Logan. At the death, substitute Liam Dickinson got a second for the Hatters from close in, but it was too late for Jim Gannon’s side. Fairclough described the win as “a terrific performance against a very strong Stockport County side”. It saw Barnet move up to fifth in the table. Teams:

The Bees went ahead after only 14 minutes. Puncheon, inevitably, had possession on the left wing in front of the massed home supporters. He sent in an excellent low cross, which Birchall comfortably knocked into the net from just outside the six-yard box.

Stockport County: Conrad Logan, Keith Briggs (Greg Tansey), Gareth Owen, Ashley Williams, Paul Tierney, Leslie Thompson, Jason Taylor, Dominic Blizzard, Adam Griffin, (Adam Proudlock), Anthony Elding (Liam Dickinson), Matty McNeil.

The home side were back on terms 11 minutes later. The Hatters’ Bolton-loanee and debutant Leslie Thompson was brought down in the box. Anthony Elding converted the penalty, with Lee Harrison going the wrong way, to send the teams in all square at half time.

Bees: Lee Harrison, Joe Devera, Ismail Yakubu (Joe O’Cearuill), Sagi Burton, Nicky Nicolau, Ashley Carew, Josh Wright, Neale Bishop, Jason Puncheon, Jason Norville (Liam Hatch), Adam Birchall. Attendance: 4,751.

Paul Fairclough’s team regained the lead in the second minute after the break. This time Puncheon delivered a fierce shot that Conrad Logan in the County goal could only 59 YEARS A Bee

The Bees’ goals were scored by Nicky Evans (two), Nicky Ironton, Dave Sansom and Paul Shinners, while the attendance was 847. Barnet went on to win the trophy against Hyde United on penalties at Telford United’s ground, Bucks Head.

The Bees have scored in each of their six most recent home games. That is the longest run of home games with the Bees scoring since the 14-game run between 16 November 2019 and 14 November 2020. The attendance at the Bees’ latest home game, against Chesterfield, was the third highest of the season (at 1,777). The largest crowds at The Hive London have been against Wrexham and Notts County. The Hatters go into today’s game as the league’s form team, having won their last six league games, and nine of their last 10. They also top the table. Dean Brennan’s side have won five and drawn two of their last 10. Mitch Brundle continues to have played in every one of the Bees’ 24 first-team games this season. Harry Taylor has played in all apart from one, while Jordan Thomas and Ephron Mason-Clark have missed just three. Compiled by “59 Years A Bee”

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz Rowe is not the only non-league manager with a suspension looming, as Lee Lashenko is in the same boat. The Bristol Manor Farm boss has been handed a 12-match ban by the FA for abusing a referee in a recent match. The Southern League Division One South side took on division rivals Paulton Rovers in the Buildbase FA Trophy second qualifying round tie at The Farm on 9th October. Lashenko was being filmed confronting the referee at full-time, after his side’s 2-1 defeat. Although he did admit to using abusive language, he has denied that his behaviour towards the officials was abusive. His ban consists of an 8-game ground ban, a four-game touchline ban and a £250 fine. Chesterfield have suspended their manager James Rowe upon a pending investigation into alleged misconduct. The 38-year-old former Ilkeston Town, Histon, Rugby Town, AFC Sudbury, Leiston, Canvey Island and Leamington forward joined the Spireites in November 2020 and guided them to the Vanarama National League play-off quarter-final last season. He has also led the side to top spot this season, as well as an Emirates FA Cup Third Round tie at Chelsea earlier this month. Rowe has also previously managed Gloucester City and has been assistant manager at Aldershot Town. His assistant, Danny Webb, has been placed in temporary charge of the club in his absence.

A goal by former Bee Courtney Baker-Richardson was enough to hand Newport County a win last Saturday. The Welsh-side travelled to Scunthorpe United in a League Two tie, with Newport in 5th place and challenging for a play-off spot. Scunthorpe are six points adrift in the relegation zone. The match was closer than the league table suggested, with County missing a penalty after 36 minutes and the hosts missing theirs in the 71st. The former Bee slotted home in the 56th minute to secure the victory.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz

Following a recent road traffic accident, player Christian Rowe has unfortunately passed away. The 19-year-old midfielder had most recently played for Slough Town in the National League South and had previously featured for both Binfield and Havant & Waterlooville. He had also recently had a trial with Burnley in the Premier League. Both Slough and Binfield cancelled their first-team and under 23 fixtures last weekend in honour of the young player. He had been touted as one of the Club’s most promising and talented youngsters. The player’s family and club have been sent many messages of support from many other clubs around the country.

After Paul Cox quit the club to join Boston United last week, Ian Culverhouse has this week been appointed manager of Kettering Town. Culverhouse was himself sacked by King’s Lynn Town back in November and has brought his assistant Paul Bastock with him to Latimer Park. As a player, Culverhouse rose from the academy at Tottenham Hotspur to their first-team. He would then move to Norwich City where he would make his name, playing well over 300 times from the Carrow Road club. The 57-year-old later ended his career with short spells at Swindon Town, Kingstonian and Brighton & Hove Albion. Culverhouse was previously assistant manager at Colchester Untied, Norwich City and Aston Villa, before having two managerial spells at King’s Lynn that were separated by a short stint at Grantham Town.

Having served the club in a range of roles, Terry Skiverton has departed Yeovil Town. Hailing from East London, he spent his youth career at Chelsea but did not make a first-team appearance. He was loaned out to Sandefjord BK in Norway, and Wycombe Wanderers, who he later signed for on a permanent basis. He then spent two years at Welling United, before moving to Huish Park in 1999. He would go on to play 328 times in league fixtures for the Glovers, scoring 38 times in non-league and the Football League, plus appearing in numerous more cup and friendly fixtures before hanging up his boots in 2010. He later managed the side between 2009 and 2012 before having three separate stints as assistant manager, and spells as caretaker and academy Head of Coaching. He now joins Charlton Athletic as a First-Team Coach.

MATCH Report

MATCH Report tapped home into the bottom right corner.

THE BEES FELL TO DEFEAT AT THE HIVE LONDON – LOSING 4-1 TO CHESTERFIELD AT THE HIVE LONDON IN THE VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE. Dean Brennan’s side’s first chance of the afternoon came in the 5th minute after Ephron Mason-Clark was brought down in the final third. Wes Fonguck delivered the free-kick to Mitch Brundle who flicked it towards Jamie Turley at the back post, but he couldn’t turn it whilst on the stretch. Chesterfield had a clear opportunity to open the scoring in the 16th minute after a cross was sent towards Calvin Miller, but his effort went wide of the target. Hall controlled Harry Taylor’s throw near the corner flag and found space inside the box to shoot narrowly past the top corner as the Bees continued to search for a breakthrough. Aston Oxborough was called into action just after the halfhour mark as King’s free-kick was heading towards the top corner until the Bees’ goalie dived across to make the save. Luke Croll was first to the goalkeeper’s parried save but sent his looping header over the crossbar. Oxborough made another important save shortly afterwards when Kabongo Tshimanga was on the receiving end of Miller’s cross into the centre. The Vanarama National League’s top goalscorer shot firsttime to force the 23-year-old into a reaction save with his legs. Tshimanga was alert and got to the bouncing ball first before scooping the rebound over the crossbar to leave the score level at the break. Sam Beard almost scored when he headed over the crossbar from close-range at the start of the second-half, however the Spireites hit back and opened the scoring moments later. Whittle was played down the left side and picked out Tshimanga in the middle of the box who got to it first and

James Rowe’s side doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Tshimanga recovered Harry Taylor’s clearance and fizzed it across the face of goal. Jamie Grimes’ had his initial shot pushed away by Oxborough, but the ‘keeper couldn’t prevent Akwasi Asante from putting the rebound in from close-range. Chesterfield added a third in the 70th minute when Jeff King was found with a well-timed through ball before he crossed low towards Tshimanga. The in-form striker took the ball in his stride before converting into the top corner from six-yards out. The Spireites scored a fourth in the 89th minute when King fired a direct 30-yard free-kick goalwards that took a deflection on its way into the top left corner. Dean Brennan’s side pulled one back in the closing stages when Ben Richards-Everton found space to let fly into the bottom corner from the edge of the box – but it couldn’t prevent the visitors from taking three points back to Derbyshire.
