WRITES
Good afternoon everybody and a very warm welcome to The Hive London. I would like to extend that welcome to Andy Hessenthaler, his staff, the officials and supporters of Dover Athletic for this live Vanarama National League match.
We’ll be looking to make another good impression infront of the BT Sport cameras today, another performance similar to that of Hartlepool away would be ideal today.
For the watching public, I think festive football is great. For us, we come to work every day looking to improve. It’s a good time for football, but I do think there are too many games. Having said that, the games are brilliant. I love them, in particular, the local derbies that have a little edge to them!
I would like to wish all our supporters far and wide a very happy and safe Christmas!
I’m a Christmas person, I enjoy spending the time with the family and with the football, it’s brilliant and a good mix!
Enjoy the game,
John

SKIPPER’S
NOTES
Hello everyone and welcome to The Hive London for today’s National League fixture against Dover Athletic! We’re hoping to make another good impression in front of the TV cameras today, the last time we were live went pretty well with a convincing victory and hopefully, we can do the same again today.
A lot has changed since we last took on Dover, they brought in new management and new playing staff so it will be a tough game. We can’t really draw too much from the last meeting as I think it will be completely different, but they’ll definitely be looking to get one back over on us so we’ll have to be ready, especially going into a busy and crucial Christmas period.
I enjoy the festive period of matches, not as much as some of my friends however! If we weren’t playing, we’d be eating and drinking a lot more, getting more unfit quickly, so these fixtures provide a good balance.
On behalf of all the boys, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas! Come on you Bees!

the club struggling against relegation, and Kinnear was replaced at the helm by John Ryan – but his reign was a short one and he was dismissed when the club lost seven of its first eight matches in the 1995–96 season. The club then appointed former England international Peter Taylor as manager, but he was unable to steer the team away from the foot of the table, and Dover held onto their place in the Conference only because Northern Premier League runners-up Boston United failed to submit their application for promotion before the required deadline.
FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY Dover Athletic F.C. was formed in 1983 after the town’s previous club, Dover FC, folded due to its debts. The new club took Dover’s place in the Southern League Southern Division, with former Dover player Alan Jones as manager and a team consisting mainly of reserve players from the old club. Initially Athletic struggled, finishing second from bottom of the table in the 1984–85 season. In November 1985 Steve McRae, who had succeeded Jones a year earlier, was sacked and replaced by Chris Kinnear.
Bill Williams took over as manager in 1997 and proved to be Dover’s most successful Conference manager, leading the club to the FA Trophy semi-finals in the 1997–98 season and a best ever league finish of sixth place in the 1999–2000 season. Williams left the club to take a senior position with Conference rivals Kingstonian in May 2001. By now the club was in severe financial difficulties, with a number of directors resigning and debts exceeding £100,000. Amid the crisis the entire board of directors resigned, forcing the club’s Supporters’ Trust to take over the running of the club, and manager Gary Bellamy was sacked after just six months in the job.
Under Kinnear the club’s fortunes turned round, with two top-five finishes followed by the Southern Division championship, and with it promotion, in the 1987–88 season. The team started strongly in the Premier Division, finishing in sixth place at the first attempt, and then winning the championship in the 1989–90 season. The club was denied promotion to the Football Conference, however, as the Crabble Athletic Ground did not meet the standard required for that league. After finishing fourth and second in the subsequent two seasons, Dover won the title again in the 1992–93 season and this time were admitted to the Conference.
Former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall took over but was dismissed just three months later, with Clive Walker taking over in March 2002 with the club rooted to the foot of the table. The club finished the season bottom of the Conference and was relegated back to the Southern League Premier Division. The club’s ongoing financial problems led to it entering a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA), a process by which insolvent companies offset their debts against future profits, due to debts that were now estimated at £400,000.
Although Dover finished in eighth place in their first season in the Conference, the following season saw

In the 2009–10 season, Dover reached the play-offs for promotion to the Conference National, but lost at the semi-final stage to Woking.
FOOTBALL CLUB
The following season the club reached the third round of the FA Cup for the first time after wins over Kent rivals Gillingham in the first round and another League Two club, Aldershot Town, in the second round. In the 2012–13 season the club again reached the play-offs, but this time lost in the final to Salisbury City.
HISTORY CONTINUED... In Dover’s first season back in the Southern League Premier Division the Whites finished in third place, albeit 17 points adrift of Tamworth, who claimed the one promotion place available that season. A poor start to the following season saw Walker replaced by Richard Langley. Dover finished the season in 19th place, before being switched to the Isthmian League Premier Division in the summer of 2004 following a re-organisation of the English football league system.
The following season the team reached the second round of the FA Cup, losing 1–0 to Milton Keynes Dons, The last 16 of the FA Trophy, narrowly losing 3–2 to Eastleigh and made the play-offs once more. A 4–1 aggregate victory over Sutton United in the semi-final set up a match with fellow Kent team Ebbsfleet United in the final. On 10 May 2014, Dover beat Ebbsfleet 1–0 at Stonebridge Road with a goal from Nathan Elder enough to seal the club’s return to the top flight of non-league football for the first time since 2002. In the 2014–15 season Dover went on another FA Cup run, beating Morecambe 1–0 in the first round, then Cheltenham Town 1–0 in the second round to reach the third round proper for only the second time ever, but lost 4–0 at home to Premier League side Crystal Palace. The side went on to finish in 8th place in their first season back in the top flight of non-league football.
The new season started with six successive defeats, which saw Langley sacked, and the financial problems continued, with the club coming within two months of being closed down. Dover were relegated to the Isthmian League Division One at the end of the season, but were saved from possible extinction in January 2005 when former director Jim Parmenter returned to head up a consortium that took over the club. Parmenter quickly sacked manager Steve Browne and convinced Clive Walker to return to the club to replace him, and also arranged for the club’s outstanding CVA debts to be cleared, putting the club on a firm financial footing for the first time in many years.
The following season, Kinnear built on the good work done previously and guided the side to a 5th place finish in the Vanarama National League. The side faced Forest Green Rovers in the play-offs, losing 1-0 at home in the first leg before drawing 1-1 in Gloucestershire to suffer an undeserved exit from the play-offs.
Dover Athletic narrowly missed out on an immediate return to the Premier Division in the 2005–06 season, reaching the play-offs for promotion but losing out to Tonbridge Angels. The following season Dover again reached the play-offs but lost in the semi-final to Hastings United, after which Walker did not have his contract renewed and was replaced by former Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler.
Kinnear’s side finished 6th in the 2016/17 season but finished the year with some silverware, after beating Welling United FC 2-0 in the Kent Senior Cup Final. Dover finished eighth last season, missing out of the play-offs on goal difference.
In his first season in charge he led the club to the Division One South championship and promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division. The following season Dover won a second consecutive championship and thus gained promotion to Conference South.
Chris Kinnear was replaced by Andy Hessenthaler in October 2018.

Leading marksman Frannie Collin and Shaun Welford scored 37 goals between them. Dover finished a massive 22 points ahead of runners-up Staines Town. They were defeated 3-2 at Billericay in the Isthmian League Cup quarter-finals.
2010/11 Dover Athletic were Conference South runners-up in 2009/10. They started with a seven-match unbeaten run including an exciting 5-3 win at home to Weston-Super-Mare and were top of the table after 11 games. Andy Hessenthaler’s team crashed to a 6-2 defeat at Lewes on Boxing Day despite taking a two-goal lead. Dover had slipped to eighth place by early March but revived promotion hopes with eight successive wins. They finished with 75 points but were 28 behind runaway champions Newport County. Ollie Shulz gave Dover an early lead in the play-off semi-final first-leg at Woking but they lost 2-1 and the second-leg was goalless at The Crabble.

2010/11 Dover Athletic reached the FA Cup third round for the first time in 2010/11. Martin Hayes’ side triumphed 5-1 at Erith Town in the second qualifying round, then beat Cambridge City 3-1 and Farnborough 5-0 after a replay to reach the first round proper. First-half goals by Adam Birchall and Luke I’Anson gave Dover a 2-0 win over Gillingham in front of 7,475 at Priestfield Stadium. Birchall scored twice more as they defeated Aldershot Town 2-0 watched by 4,123 at The Crabble in the second round. Dover lost 2-0 at Huddersfield Town in the third round. They narrowly failed to qualify for the Conference South play-offs despite Birchall scoring 34 goals.
2013/14 Dover Athletic won promotion via the Conference South play-offs in 2013-14. Chris Kinnear’s side began with two wins but then lost five of their next six games. Dover won only seven home matches but their 13 away wins was the best in the Conference overall, combined with just five away defeats. They qualified for the play-offs in fifth position after losing only two of their last 15 games. Moses Ademola and Ricky Modeste scored two goals apiece as Dover beat Sutton United 4-1 on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals. They defeated Ebbsfleet United 1-0 in the Conference South play-off final. Dover narrowly lost 1-0 at MK Dons in the FA Cup second round.

ALEX JONES A Question of Sport
2018
Dover are here today, possibly with Mr Simon Harris, who doubtless has views as to the recent amalgamation of Supporters Direct and the FSF. He may also try this quiz, along with other fans of the Crabble. Sometime in the 90s, I visited the ground for a friendly involving Tottenham Hotspur. Wearing Spurs shirts were David McDonald and Lee Hodges
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Who scored the goals in the World Cup final? Who were the losing semi-finalists? Which was the final African team to be eliminated? Where did Barnet start this campaign? Last season, who was the referee in the FA Cup Final? Who presented the trophy? What was unusual about the first televised game between Wrexham and Newport recently? 8. Even more unique, which Scottish record, previously held by Vale of Leven, did Brechin emulate? 9. We lost Chas Hodges this year. In what year was Ossie going to Wembley, apparently his knees having gone all trembley? 10. Who were the finalists that season? 11. Which two Vanarama National League sides won promotion? 12. Who eliminated Dover from the FA Cup this season? 13. Tennis - Who did Novak Djokovic defeat to win Wimbledon? 14. Who were the Ladies Singles Finalists? 15. Cricket - Who are the County Champions? 16. Alistair Cook was rightly given a standing ovation in his Final Test. Who were England’s opponents that day? 17. In 2007, who did the Bees beat to reach the Third Round of the FA cup? 18. Who won the Ryder Cup? 19. Last season, who was Barnet’s top goal scorer? 20. Who will be the final Premier League side to surrender their unbeaten record? There is only one Invincibles. BARNETFC.COM 29

Elliot
CHARLES
Having been brought up in nearby Enfield, Charles was part of our youth-side and impressed on many occasions; after 20-goals for the Under-18s, Elliot signed a three-year professional contract with the first-team. A striker who had pace but also a physical presence on his side, with a stature of 6ft 2, Charles was given opportunities but on a limited basis. Loan spells with Farnborough, Lewes, Hemel Hempstead Town, Ebbsfleet United and Havant & Waterlooville occurred during his time with us between 2008-2010. Across him time with us, the two-time capped Grenada international played eight-times for the Bees but failed to hit the back of the net. Elliot did though score against Arsenal in a 2-2 pre-season friendly back in 2009, something which will live long in my memory personally, as I went into hysteria surrounded by a swarm of Arsenal fans back in Underhill. Following his release and a spell with Kettering Town, Charles enjoyed a season with Dover in the 2010/11 season. Seven goals in 31 that season wasn’t enough for Dover to keep the striker on board, meaning Elliot had further transfers to Concord Rangers, Hendon and Eastbourne Borough, with 11-goals scored for both Hendon and Eastbourne. Those strike rates interested Dover again in the summer of 2013. A measly one-goal in 25 league games meant Charles was on his way, leaving the club to reunite with exclub Eastbourne Borough. Charles has become a non-league journeyman with Staines Town, Ware, Hendon again, Metropolitan Police and Braintree Town, with the 28-year-old now currently with Wealdstone FC. BARNETFC.COM 30
DANIELE ACCURSO
Keanu M ARS H B RO WN Keanu Marsh Brown was and still is an exciting winger who graced The Hive and The Crabble in recent years. Being a youth academy player with both Arsenal and Fulham, Marsh-Brown clearly showed promise as a youngster but unfortunately couldn’t quite make the grade with the Premier League clubs. After loans to Milton Keynes Dons and Dundee United, a permanent move to Oldham came to fruition in January 2012. After half-aseason, Keanu joined Yeovil Town but after just 10 months there, his contract was cancelled by mutual consent. Keanu subsequently joined Barnet in March 2013. In his first full season with the Bees during the 2013/14 campaign, in the Conference, the Englishman netted 13 times but was transfer listed by Martin Allen in a bid to raise funds. The following season, several deadline day bids were turned down by Barnet and Marsh-Brown stayed for the whole of Barnet’s Conference winning campaign. In total, 15 goals across 58 games meant he was often Barnet’s match winner and his silky skills made him a crowd favourite in North London. With Barnet moving up to the Football League, Keanu Marsh-Brown stayed in the division as a transfer to Forest Green Rovers in the summer of 2015 materialised. The Hammersmith born winger had three seasons with the Gloucestershire outfit, which included making two playoff-final appearances at Wembley, with the second visit ending in a 3-1 victory for the vegans which saw the club gain promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history. With a ratio of 1 goal every 4 games, the England C international was once again a crowd favourite at the New Lawn and was a major part in the club’s progression to even greater heights. His ability to help club’s gain promotion from the fifth tier was what attracted Dover Athletic in March 2018. Netting a brace on his debut against league leaders Macclesfield Town, the then 25-year-old made a further 5 appearances scoring another two in the process as the club narrowly missed out on the playoffs. The winger can now be found playing for Newport County.

MATCH REPORT
The Bees progressed through to the Second Round of the Buildase FA Trophy with a 3-2 win over Bath City at The Hive London. The Bees progressed through to the Second Round of the Buildase FA Trophy with a 3-2 win over Bath City at The Hive London.
Deon Moore was clean through for Bath but hit his shot wildly off target. Mason-Clark forced a save from Ryan Clarke in the Romans goal before Duku was also denie by the legs of the Bath keeper.
Barnet made a great start and were ahead within a minute when Wes Fonguck curled home from the edge of the box.
Sparkes shot just wide of the top right corner before the hour mark and Jack Taylor was off target from close range.
It was two soon after. A great ball from deep found Ephron Mason-Clark, he delivered a good cross from the right and Manny Duku slid it home!
The visitors reduced the deficit to just one goal when Adam Mann poked home from close range following good build-up play.
Chances came and went for Tutonda and Duku before Barnet made it three in the 24th minute. A great run from Dan Sparkes through the Bath defence preceded a pin-point cross to Mason-Clark who made no mistake from close range for his first professional goal.
Substitute Charlee Adams’ effort from 25 yards out produced a good save from Clarke before Shaq Coulthirst climbed above the visiting keeper to head home an Elliott Johnson cross, only to be flagged offside.
Mason-Clark was through again but a great recovery tackle from Anthony Straker denied him a shot at goal. Bath pulled a goal back with their first clear attempt. The ball fell to Michee Efete who powered home from the edge of the box, giving Mark Cousins no chance.
Mohammad Baghdadi curled a shot wide of the lefthand post while at the other end, Coulthirst nipped in following a defence mix up but was denied by the body of Clarke.
After the break and the game really opened up in the tricky wet and windy conditions.
The Bees held on to claim their spot in the Second Round of the FA Trophy.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS (WAR IS OVER) It seems appropriate, given both the current Festive season and the recent centenary of the end of the First World War, to devote today’s column to the Christmas Truce of 1914 We like to believe that for one short day, on December 25th, the British and German armies laid down their arms, fraternised and exchanged small gifts, and even engaged in impromptu football matches in No Man’s Land. It is the enduring tale of the football that is most revered, symbolising as it does a brief moment of brotherhood and casting aside differences in an increasingly bloody conflict that ultimately took in nearly 40 million casualties in what was truly Hell on Earth.
wasn’t the first time that these had occurred, and their motivation was as much to do with practical needs such as tending to the wounded, burying the dead and repairing damaged trenches as to come together briefly in peace. Impromptu football matches certainly featured in the activities, however. In most cases, they appear to have consisted of little more than a “kick-about” – sometimes with a bully beef can standing in for the ball – but something more substantial probably took place in three or four locations, including near Mesen.
The event has since been commemorated in the Altogether Now statue that was sited initially in the ruins of St Luke’s Church in Liverpool and now permanently resides in the Belgian town of Mesen, which is situated close to the Truce that took place in Ploegsteert. A second, quarter-size, version of the statue can be seen at the FA’s National Football Centre in Burton-on-Trent.
While these were not the first truces to take place, they were likely amongst the last, as High Command moved to stamp out the perceived risk from fraternisation of troops questioning the war and potentially engaging in mutiny. What matters most, however, is less the detailed historical specifics of what took place and more that something did… and what it represents. Hopefully, we can all remember that important message in three days’ time.
But what is the truth behind the legend? What actually happened that Christmas Day? It appears that that a number of Truces did indeed take place at various points along the Front. It
Merry Christmas, Everybody.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
WHAT’S THE BUZZ JOSH PALMER
A former Bee who has been on the move this month is Ruben Bover. The Spaniard came through the academy system at his hometown club Real Mallorca, before moving to England when he was 17 years old, playing at Kidderminster Harriers for a year. After a season at the Harriers’ local rivals Halesowen Town, he then transferred to League 1 outfit Charlton Athletic. After a short loan spell at Spanish third tier side San Roque de Lepe, he signed for New York Red Bulls in February 2013, playing alongside the likes of Shaun and Bradley Wright Phillips, Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill. After having spent time at New York Cosmos, he ended up here at the Hive in January 2017, before leaving over the summer. Earlier this month he finally got back into football, returning to his homeland. On 8th December he joined FC Andorra, a club representing the country of the same name, but competes in the Spanish league system, currently playing in Group 1 Primera Catalana, the fifth step of Spanish football.
This week has seen the draw for the second round of the FA Trophy, which we were a part of thanks to our 3-2 win over Bath City here at the Hive last weekend. Several other of our local sides are also at this stage of the competition. Wingate and Finchley, who are at this stage of the competition for the first time in their history, will travel to Hemel Hempstead Town, in what is the closest distance between two sides in the competition. Boreham Wood travel to Blyth Spartans, Dagenham and Redbridge go to the winner of Salford City and Gateshead, and Leyton Orient go to Wrexham. Other notable ties include FC Halifax Town vs Solihull Moors, Hartlepool United vs AFC Telford United and AFC Fylde vs Biggleswade Town.
As a reward for our victory over Bath, we were handed a home tie against Southern League Premier South side Dorchester Town. This tie, set to be played on 12th January 2019, will be the first time in almost 40 years that we have faced the Magpies, with us having last played them in a competitive game on 24th March 1979, away in a Southern League Premier game. The home tie that season was played just over 2 weeks before, on 3rd March. Before that, we have only ever met the Dorset side on two other occasions, in the Southern League First Division South during the 1976/77 season. Out of the four games played, we have won twice, both 1-0, once at home and once away. Dorchester won the first encounter also by a 1-0 scoreline, whilst the other game ended a 3-3 draw. Lets hope we can add to our win tally against them next month!
Ahead of their game away at Bedford Town last Tuesday, National League side Aldershot Town announced that they would field a team of youth players for the FA Trophy first round replay against the Southern League Division One South Central side. Despite there being a three league gap, and a 58 place gap, between the two clubs, the Eagles came back from a goal down on two occasions to secure a 3-3 draw with the former Football League side. “This wasn’t a decision that was made lightly”, said a club statement. “But we felt we couldn’t risk losing additional players in fixtures that are above and beyond our league schedule and not be able to have a squad to fulfil our league games over this busy period. The side are currently 17th in the league, and four points above the relegation zone. They go into the festive period with 4 games in 10 days and currently find themselves in an injury crisis, reportedly having just 10 first team players available. The winner of the tie, played on Tuesday, will play Chesterfield away.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
Last weekend saw former England, Tottenham and Arsenal defender pick up his first win as a manager at his third attempt. The new Macclesfield Town boss failed to make an immediate impact at the Cheshire side, firstly losing 1-0 at Colchester United, then suffering a defeat on penalties in the Checkatrade Trophy. However, a goal in each half saw hid side win 2-0 against Crawley Town last weekend. However, other results going against them saw them fail to move up the table, with the Silkmen still finding themselves rooted to the bottom of the table 4 points off of safety.
Following their relegation to non league for the first time last season, Chesterfield reported a loss of over £1 million for the 2017/18 year. It was the second successive season that they relegated, having been demoted from League 1 in 2016/17, a year where they had reported a loss of £500,000. Their report indicated a figure of £756,170 was reduced in their turnover, notably from their decreased gate receipts and lost commercial income. However, the club have seen an increase in income from transfers. Club owner Dave Allen had put £1.3 million into the club, as well as there being an increase in borrowing, with over £1.2 million being borrowed in long term loans.
To get into the festive spirit, Cambridge United have a Christmas tree pattern into their pitch. The design was produced by groundsman Ian Darler, and even features stars and baubles. “Our Groundsman does Christmas better than yours”, said a post on the clubs’ Twitter account. The light hearted joke was subject to several fun comments by the sides’ online followers, including “Think they should be focusing on getting the tree points myself...”, with the club responding: “Gary Deegan is very much aiming for the tree points today!” The design was inspired by Leicester City, who, in the past, often cut inventive patterns into their pitch, a practice which was prohibited by the Premier League at the start of last season.
For the first time since 1968, League 1 side Accrington Stanley own their Crown Ground stadium. The side have played at the ground since their reforming in 1968, having build the ground. The side had previously been paying a lease to local council, Hyndburn Council, but owner Andy Holt purchased the land so now owns the land. The stadium is officially the smallest in the Football League, with a capacity of just 5,450. “The price was fixed and assessed independently, I asked for no favours from Hyndburn Council and they have been smashing” said Holt. “It cost £400,000 and an interest rate of three per cent until the debt is settled, which will be soon. It means if the club does ever hit hard times again, they do not have to pay a lease on the land”.

The FA have charged Championship Stoke City for failing to control their players after a penalty was awarded to Aston Villa during their 2-2 draw at Villa Park last weekend. The side, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, were winning 1-0 after 72 minutes but Villa, another former top flight side, were awarded a penalty due to a foul on forward Jonathan Kodjia. Several players surrounded referee Peter Bankes in protest resulting in Ryan Shawcross and Erik Pieters, who gave away the foul, both picked up yellow cards for the incident. The subsequent penalty was scored, however the visitors were awarded their own penalty just 4 minutes later, which they also scoring. The Villains then scored an equaliser with 6 minutes to go to salvage a point from the game.
The Football Association of Wales have announced that Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground will host its’ first international in almost 13 years when it hosts Wales’ friendly game against Trinidad and Tobago. The game will take place on 20th March 2019, with the side then taking on Slovakia in Cardiff on 24th March in a European qualifier. The last football international to take place at the stadium in November 2006, a 4-0 friendly win over Liechtenstein. “I’m delighted that we’re able to play at the Racecourse for the first time in 10 years. We thoroughly enjoyed taking the team there for an open training session in May. The support was incredible and further fuelled our ambition to host a match at the historic ground. Trinidad & Tobago will prove an interesting test for us and will be great preparation ahead of the EURO 2020 qualifying campaign”. The side has also hosted several rugby international games.

THE RECKLESS GUIDE TO
Dagenham & Redbridge 29 • 12 • 2018 - KICK OFF: 3:00PM LOCATION: THE CHIGWELL CONSTRUCTION STADIUM, VICTORIA ROAD, DAGENHAM, RM10 7XL

KEY PERSONNEL
DIRECTIONS BY TRAIN
Peter Taylor is the current Gaffer at Victoria Road. With respect, Peter has had more clubs than a professional golfer as a manager including a game as Caretaker for England, England Under 21 for six years in 2 spells, England Under 20’s, Southend, Leicester, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Stevenage amongst others.
Take the District (green) Underground line to Dagenham East. Come out of the station and turn Left, Victoria Road is about 400 yards and on your left, the ground is a further 100 yards down Victoria Road.
CAR PARKING
As an old-fashioned out and out winger he won four England caps and had impressive playing spells at Crystal Palace and Tottenham.
Street parking is plentiful as these days the club car park is officials members and invited guests only.
BRIEF DIRECTIONS BY ROAD I once found a nice and straightforward way to get to the ground courtesy of the now sadly relocated Al’s Tours. Get onto the A12 from either the A406 North Circular Road or the M11 signposted towards Chelmsford. Continue on the A12 until you reach the Moby Dick junction and turn right onto the A1112 signposted Dagenham. Stay on this road even when it insects with the A124 keep looking for the A112 (Rainham Road) signs. You will eventually see the floodlights on the right-hand side. Turn into Victoria Road and the ground is at the end of the road.
EATING AND DRINKING LOCALLY We will be made welcome in the Dagenham & Redbridge Social Club. The downstairs bar is where most of the away supporters tend to head and there is a charge of 50p at the door. For pubs, a few minutes walk away the Pipe Major is a Marstons near to the station while the Eastbrook is a short walk further down the Rainham Road. My band of brothers will have a few in London Town before heading down on the tube in time for kick off.
Another option – Exit the M25 at Junction 31 and take the A13 (Central London). Exit the A13 and head for signpost Dagenham/Dagenham East. Onto the A1306. At the second set of lights turn right onto the B178 (Ballards Road). At the end of this road, you will come to a large roundabout, (The Bull). Turn left into Rainham Road. passing Dagenham East tube station on the left and Victoria Road awaits on the left. BARNETFC.COM 50
THE RECKLESS GUIDE
GROUND DESCRIPTION
Henry Ford’s company bought acres and acres of land in Dagenham in the early 1920s and in 1925 started to build the massive car plant still in existence. The metal to build the roofing covering the side terracing at the Victoria ground was donated by Ford in 1967 and it was estimated that there was enough metal to produce 23 Ford Capris.
The main stand or the Carling Stand which replaced the splendid old wooden grandstand runs for 3/4 of the pitch and was completed in the closed season 2001. It is a fairly low front loading structure, which has room for about 800. Its awkward neighbour which occupies the remaining 1/4 of this side is called the Family Stand. To the left is The A13 Steel Stand which was completed in 2009. It houses the away fans and has room for 1,200. The structure dominates the ground and the views from it are excellent. The remainder of the ground is terracing with the open Bury or Clock End behind the goal and the Popular Side covered terrace opposite the main stand.
OUR LAST MEETING & MEMORIES Our last visit was in February 2016 when goals from ‘Admiral’ Nelson and Luke Gambin won the game 2-0 in front of 1,728.

CELEBRITY WATCH
Ramsey.
I go back a long time for a visit to Victoria Road.
Very tasty 1960’s ‘Puppet On A String’ barefoot babe Sandy Shaw was born in Dagenham. Footballs famous is well represented with two ex England managers originating from Dagenham Terry Venables and the late great Sir Alf
I recall ‘Mad’ Stevie Ragan the fearless Barnet frontman in the early 1980s creating a divot the size of Essex after a sliding tackle and then throwing it at a section of Daggers fans who dared to taunt him – brave boys indeed. The Dagenham tannoy announcer informing the crowd that Cyril Regis and Glen Hoddle were in the starting line-up for Barnet and not their younger brothers David and Carl.
The most famous marching Band in the civilised world are also locals, The Dagenham Girl Pipers who were the only un-amplified act at the Knebworth Open Air Rock Festival in 1978!
At Underhill in 2004, the 5-0 demolition of the Daggers featured the Nicky Bailey “Bees Goal of the Season” screamer live on Sky TV.

THE HIVE FOUNDATION
In the Community
COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS The Bees in the Community team have had a busy festive period, reaching out to our local communities and spreading some festive cheer. We kicked off the season by supporting the Young Barnet Foundation in their toy drive to help provide Christmas gifts for the children living in poverty throughout the London Borough of Barnet. We would like to thank everyone that donated a present to the cause at the toy drop against Bath City or donated online. Next up was our annual hospital player visit to drop off presents to children in the paediatric wards of Northwick Park Hospital and Barnet Hospital. With players and staff from the men’s and women’s first team along with community staff, it was a real club effort to give the children a day to remember! Finally, we also had the community centre Christmas dinner, where the Bees in the Community coaches assisted in serving up a Christmas feast to the users of the centre. We had over 30 people in to enjoy the 3-course meal and Christmas songs. Also, a massive thank you to Broadfields Primary School that visited to perform a carol concert for the resident disability group, DALO; to make their Christmas experience special.
PREMIER LEAGUE WRITING STARS On Friday 14th December, Bees in the Community coaches visited one of our local schools, Roxeth Primary, to run an activator lesson for the Premier League Writing Stars competition. Premier League Writing Stars is part of Premier League Primary Stars, which provides teaching resources and in-school support in 15,000 schools nationwide. Premier League Writing Stars uses the appeal of football to inspire children to express themselves through creative writing. The theme of this year’s competition is Diversity, which is an important theme in the Premier League and the Bees in the Community Team. It is about celebrating the things that make us different and the things that make us the same.
CHARITY COLLECTION This afternoon, we welcome Marie Curie to the Hive who will be doing a collection. Marie Curie believe everyone living with a terminal illness should be able to get the most from the time they have left, however hard that may sometimes feel. Marie Curie Nurses care for you in your home, when you need them most, day or night. There hospices are at the heart of communities and their trained volunteers and advisers are here for you with practical information and support when you don’t know what to do next or just need to talk.
