WRITES

Darren Currie

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Hive London for this afternoon’s FA Trophy match against Weymouth. I want to extend my welcome to all the players, staff and supporters of our visitors this afternoon. They are going really well in their league so it will most certainly be a tough game. Looking back on last Saturday, it was crucial that we got all three points and I have just about calmed down from my celebrations! I thought we were really good in the first half and probably should have been more than one goal to the good at the break. We let them back into the game and I felt frustrated that we weren’t going to take the three points, but we scored right at the death with a set play which is pleasing. The three points means we can look up the table and go into the Christmas period with plenty of confidence. There are some challenging games to come but I have full belief in this group to push us up the league. You will all know by now that I take the cup competitions very seriously and that will be no different this season. The FA Trophy gives us a chance to have an enjoyable cup run and it’s an opportunity to go to Wembley. There is no doubt in my mind that I want us to have a really good go at it against this season, just like we did last year. However, you take each game as it comes and we will have to be on our game this afternoon. Weymouth will come here right up for it and will want to cause an upset, I expect the boys to deliver a good performance. Winning any game breeds

confidence so we want to continue this little patch of form we find ourselves in after winning the last two games. Another thing that winning brings will be crowd numbers and I am very grateful for those of you who backed the boys in the last two home matches. Obviously we want as many supporters as possible at The Hive and I am sure the numbers will increase if we continue to put in good performances. In the last two games the atmosphere has been really positive, so please keep supporting us and keep making yourselves heard. As Christmas approaches I want to thank you for your support this year. The support I have been given has been top draw, so thanks as always. Let’s stick together and keep working hard to make sure we have a great season.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and thanks as always for your support,

#LetsBeeTogether

Darren

WEYMOUTH

OPPOSITION

History Weymouth Football Club was founded in 1890. Formed as an amateur club the club is nicknamed “The Terras” due to the terra-cotta and blue quartered shirts they originally wore. The club’s impact on Dorset’s football scene was immediate and we won the Dorset Junior Cup for the first three seasons, prompting the Dorset FA to reclassify us as a senior club. After winning the Western League Championship in 1923, the club joined the Southern League and adopted professionalism. However financial difficulties led to the club returning to amateur status and the Western League in 1928. After the Second War the club were forced to start again, in the Western League Division 2, but achieved promotion in 1948 and then third place in Division 1 the following season. Weymouth returned to the Southern 12

BARNETFC.COM

League for the 1949-50 season and remained until becoming founder members of the Alliance Premier League in 1979-80, finishing as runnersup in the inaugural season. The Terras became Southern League Champions in 1964-65 and 1965-66 and they share with Yeovil Town and Telford United the distinction of playing all 20 seasons in the Premier Division prior to it’s temporary disbanding. Weymouth have enjoyed considerable FA Cup success: in 1949 they became Manchester United’s first FA Cup opponents back at Old Trafford after the War and were not disgraced in a 0-4 defeat, in the 3rd round. In 1962 we reached the Fourth round before losing 0-2 away at Preston North End. I n 1987 the club moved from its harbourside Recreation Ground to the Wessex Stadium and - for a while - it looked as if promotion to the Football League would materialize. After coming close, however, the club were relegated back to the Southern League (1989) and even lower - before returning to the Premier Division in 1997.

THE HISTORY

After defeat by Chelmsford City in mid January 2010 Hutchinson was dismissed - followed by his assistant Andy Mason - and replaced by ex-Birmingham City player Jerry Gill. However Gill only lasted 44 days before he resigned leaving assistant Andy Harris in charge. At the end of the 2009-10 season the club were relegated from the Blue Square South to the Zamaretto Premier League. Ian Hutchinson and Andy Mason returned to the club at the beginning of the following season with the task of rebuilding the Terras’ squad on a vastly reduced budget. After two post Christmas defeats Hutchinson was again relieved of his duties and succeeded by the vastly experienced Martyn Rogers, a former successful manager of Tiverton Town and ex-Weymouth player.

Following a succession of seasons treading water, the club was taken over in 2004 and a new board of directors installed Steve Claridge as player-manager with a mission to bring success to the club.

Rogers successfully steered the club away from the relegation places, but was not awarded a contract for the 2010-11 season as the club appointed local man (and another ex-player) Brendon King to the manager’s role with Mattie Groves as his assistant.

Galvanising club and town, with league attendances averaging 1490, Claridge led the Terras to runners-up spot in his first season and promotion to the Nationwide South League.

In February 2012 a consortium of local men and club supporters, led by then Chairman Nigel Biddlecombe, were able to buy the club and set about trying to both stabilize the Terras and lead it’s recovery.

The club returned to full time professionalism in 2005 and celebrated with the Nationwide South title at the end of that season.

After a good 9th place finish in 2012-13 results were disappointing as 2013-14 got going and King paid the price when he was replaced by the club’s vastly experienced goalkeeper Jason Matthews, initially as caretaker, who has taken to the mantle of playermanager with fantastic enthusiasm.

Our initial season back in the Conference resulted in an 11th place finish, but the club struggled the following season before being led to safety by manager John Hollins. His tenure ended at the start of 2008 and Alan Lewer became manager in January 2009. At the start of 2009 Weymouth’s financial difficulties surfaced, leading to the resignation of chairman Curtis. Former chairman Ian Ridley replaced him in March and - days later - Lewer was replaced by former Welsh manager Bobby Gould. Despite his experience the club was relegated, having only gained a single point since the majority of the first team had walked out in February.

Jason certainly made his mark during his first season in charge but the Terras fell agonising short missing out on the play off’s after being well placed at Christmas. The same story occurred in the following season where the Terras again missed out on a play off place on the last day of the season. The 2016-2107 season was also a major disappointment for the club as yet again we fell short finishing 10th.

In May the club brought in Matty Hale - a popular explayer - as their new manager, with another ex-player Ian Hutchinson as his assistant.

Matthews paid the price for the under-performance and left the club after the final of the Dorset Senior Cup with Mark Molesley and Paul Maitland acting as caretaker managers.

After a disappointing start to the 2009-10 season Hale stepped down and Hutchinson was appointed caretaker manager.

Mark’s credentials and skill immediately impressed the club’s board who acted quickly to appoint Mark as manager before the last game of the season. This faith was repaid by the influx of quality players and a brand

Following months of financial problems and near liquidation the club was taken over by George Rolls at the end of November 2009.

of exciting football. It was so near yet so far as despite qualify for the end of season playoffs the Terras were undone by three wonder goals after a long midweek trip to Kings Lynn to miss out on the chance of promotion. The Terras went one better in 2018-2019 by not only winning the Southern League Premier South on the last day of the season in front of nearly 2700 fans. They also won the overall Champions of the Southern League by defeating the Premier Central winner Kettering Town on penalties. We now look forward to playing in the National League South in 2019-2020.

THE BEES SNATCHED ALL THREE POINTS RIGHT AT THE DEATH TO SEAL BACK TO BACK NATIONAL LEAGUE VICTORIES. SIMEON AKINOLA’S LATE HEADER SEALED THE POINTS AFTER JACK TAYLOR AND DANNY ROWE STRIKES HAD THE TEAMS DEADLOCKED.

HOW IT HAPPENED The Bees started the better of the sides and almost took the lead when Josh Walker’s powerful strike went just wide of the far post. It was Walker involved again as he headed straight at Sam Hornby after Simeon Akinola’s strike deflected into his path. 13 minutes in and it was the Coasters turn to threaten to take the lead, as first Ryan Croasdale saw a shot blocked, before Scott Loach saved from Danny Rowe. Straight back up the other end, the returning Cheye Alexander saw an effort comfortably saved by Hornby, but it looked as though the Bees started where they left off against Ebbsfleet. 26

BARNETFC.COM

Midway through the half Jack Taylor tried his luck with an effort from distance, but again Hornby was equal to it. Up the other end, Dan Bradley’s deflected effort had to be saved well by Loach. With eight minutes to go before the break the Bees took the lead, as the ball broke through for J Taylor, he lashed his effort into the bottom right corner to put us ahead. It was the Irishman’s eighth goal of the season and it was another super strike to add to his collection. Darren Currie’s side had a golden chance to double their lead as J Taylor skipped into the area and with the goal gaping the Irish international opted to pass allowing Fylde defences to hack clear.

Into the second half and it was J Taylor with the first effort of the period, his strike from 20 yards out was saved by Hornby. The Irishman was running the show, with 55 minutes on the clock he unleashed a powerful effort from distance, which Hornby had to turn round for a corner. But against the run of play, the Coasters levelled as the dangerous Rowe fired home from a free-kick to level things up with an hour played. On the 77th minute, the ground rose as one, to remember Billy Meadows who sadly passed away earlier this week. A touching moment at The Hive London to remember a Bees great. Into the final 10 minutes and the Bees continued to dominate the possession but the ball just wouldn’t fall for Currie’s side. Sparkes sent in a superb delivery from a corner but it was flicked across the goal and just cleared. There was a succession of corner kicks but the Coasters continued to stand firm as stoppage time approached. A last-ditch challenge from Callum Reynolds kept the scores level as the clock ticked into three minutes of added time. But there was to be a late twist as Akinola powered in a header from a Sparkes corner to snatch a deserved three points for the Bees.

Barnet FC team: Loach, Alexander, Johnson, Reynolds, Dunne (C), J Taylor, Akinola, H Taylor, Fonguck (Adams ‘90+3), Walker (Vilhete ‘84), Tutonda (Sparkes ‘77). Unused subs: Azaze, Vasiliou 27

My fellow columnist Miss Carla Devine recently attended her first London Bees game, a 2-1 victory for Aston Villa. “Not the best performance by us, but good at times, especially going forward” was Carla’s verdict. There is currently a mid-season break, followed by three away games, so consequently they will not play a League game at the Hive until Sunday February 23rd, when the opponents are Durham. Such is the peculiar evolution of the Women’s Championship that one of their away games is at London City. They are a team formed after a less than amicable breakup with Milwall, and, uniquely for this level, they play in Dartford without “brothers”. As I write this, before the Christmas break, both City and the London Bees are midtable, not quite in the promotion frame, but competing well also.

What’s the

Buzz?

Rearranging last weekend’s postponed game will “preserve the integrity of the competition”, says Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell. The sides’ match away at Macclesfield Town last Saturday was called off by the EFL, as the Silkmen players still remain unpaid and because their mental wellbeing is now at “rock bottom”. “We could make a big song and dance” said Artell. “I don’t mind playing. That keeps the integrity of the competition. If there was a rule that said they would lose the three points automatically then that’s fine, but that’s not the case”. The tie is yet to be rearranged.

Daryl Murphy has admitted that the two month ban he served at the end of last year was a result of a failed drugs test. Currently playing at Bolton Wanderers, the striker was banned between early October and early December 2018 by the FA. Playing for Nottingham Forest at the time, he tested positive for cocaine, however the FA’s policy states that they do not name players who test positive for recreational drugs, only those who use drugs to enhance sporting performances. “I would like to stress that the taking of recreational drugs is something that I don’t condone whatsoever” said Murphy in a statement. “I served a suspension at the beginning of last season for making a bad decision while on a night out. This was an isolated incident which happened out of competition when we had no game. I immediately regretted it”.

The midfielder has featured in the squads for the side at four World Cups, and has also won the 2005 OFC Under 20 Championship, and the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. He made his debut for the first team back in June 2006, a 3-1 win over Liechtenstein played in Ulm, Germany. “It has been a privilege to be involved with the Socceroos over the last 14-odd years” said 34 year old Milligan. “To be able to represent my country over that time is above and beyond anything I could have dreamed of”. He spent much of his early career playing for various clubs in his homeland, before a season in China with Shanghai Shenhua and then in Japan with JEF United Chiba. Two spells at Melbourne Victory followed, with two seasons at Baniyas SC in the UAE in between. Short spells with Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia and Hibernian in Scotland followed, before playing for Southend United this season.

Having held a 2-0 lead away at Bristol Rovers last Saturday, Southend United manager Sol Campbell said that he does not understand “what world these guys are living in”, after his players let the lead slip, ultimately losing 4-2. The Essex side are in 22nd place in League 1, only off of the bottom spot thanks to Bury’s expulsion from the division and Bolton Wanderers’ heavy points deduction. The side have only picked up six points this season, having won just one and drawn three of their 20 games played so far. “I said to the guys the game’s not done, you’ve got to keep doing the same things. Then it’s all out the window, players not getting back in position, not busting a gut to do the same things”, Campbell said. “Maybe some of the players thought the game was done, finished. As individuals and as a team, we have to recognise that you’ve got to be fighting for every inch of the pitch and you’ve got to be in position”.

Borussia Dortmund and Belgium international midfielder Axel Witsel has been ruled out for several months – after sustaining an injury after falling down the stairs at home. The 30 year old was taken to hospital after slipping down the stairs at his house, resulting in a broken nose and an injured jaw, confirmed manager Lucien Favre. The incident took place ahead of the German giants’ home tie against Slavia Prague. Dortmund went on to win the tie 2-1, qualifying for the knockout stages. “He won’t be able to play for the rest of the year ... It’s a shame for him and us, he’s an important player” said Favre. “Hopefully he is back as soon as possible”.

The French Football Federation, the FFF, have extended the contract of the national team manager Didier Deschamps up until the end of 2022. The new contract sees an extension of another two years upon the previous one, and will now see the 51 year old oversee Euro 2020, the next Nations League, 2022 World Cup qualification and the 2022 World Cup finals, if the side qualify. Deschamps took over as France manager in July 2012, shortly after Laurent Blanc resigned after guiding the side to the Euro 2012 quarter final. The former Marseille, Juventus and Chelsea player took France to the runners up spot in Euro 2016, before winning the 2018 World Cup.

According to the clubs owners, Yeovil Town’s current league position is by far exceeding the targets set out by chairman Scott Priestnall and manager Darren Sarll at the start of the season. The aim set out by those running the club was to be in the top ten by new year, however the side are going into the FA Trophy first round weekend sitting in second place. The side were relegated from League 2 last season, having been promoted to the Football League in 2003. The side reached the Championship in 2013, but were relegated three times in six seasons, including two in succession, to return to non league. Despite a slow start to the season, the side recovered to put in a strong run throughout September and October, which saw them win nine games out of eleven in the league, and move up to within a point of the top spot.

HOW IT HAPPENED Having matched each other up for half an hour, The Cherries scored four goals in 14 first-half minutes to take a 4-0 lead into the break - a scoreline they would think to have the game dead and buried. But the Bees were certainly not going down without a fight as Wraynel Hercules, Enrico Greco and Okem Chime all found the net to make for a thrilling end to the match. The Cherries held on however to bring an end to the Bees FA Youth Cup journey for the season. The Cherries dominated the ball in the early stages and they came agonisingly close to opening the scoring with just three minutes on the clock. A smartly worked corner-kick found it’s way to Harvey Bertrand at the far post - his shot, however, was stopped on the line by Callan. In what was becoming an even affair, both sides had chances to break the deadlock. Ross Helcke found himself in space, but his shot from distance bobbled wide of the post, before Christian Saydee expertly rolled his man and curled just the wrong side of the far stick. Dan Senda’s side passed up a golden opportunity to score the opener as Wraynel Hercules accurately flicked around the corner to an on-rushing Chime. To the relief of the home side, Cameron Plain was quick off his line to put himself in the way of Chime’s shot and relieve the danger. And just moments later, the hosts took the lead. Oliver James smashed a cross along the six-yard box and the impressive Saydee made no mistake to convert in off the crossbar. Bertrand added a second four minutes later as the ball fell his way following a bit of pinball inside the box. The defender couldn’t miss.

The Cherries were now rampant and made their dominance pay, adding a third and fourth before half-time. Luke Pardoe was picked out in acres inside the box and he smashed beyond James Callan before Saydee, on the turn, rifled in off the far post to give the Bees a mountain to climb in the second period. The Bees, however, were up for the task as they came flying out of the blocks in the second period and pegged Bournemouth back by one within a minute of the restart. Hercules took hold at the edge of the box before steadying himself and finding the bottom left corner to open the Bees’ account for the evening. And they didn’t let up from there. Chime was fouled inside the box to earn his side a penalty and Greco smashed into the top corner from the spot to half the deficit, before Chime added a third for the Bees, as he beat two men inside the box before finding the bottom corner. As the game again found it’s rhythm, Martyn Box threw his body on the line to deny the Cherries forward from adding their fifth of the game. In the proceedings, Boxy appeared to have picked up a very serious injury and was unfortunately stretchered from play. Despite all of the Bees positive play in the second half, the Cherries held onto to their one-goal lead to progress to the Fourth Round of the cup, ending a campaign Dan Senda’s side can be proud of.

Barnet FC Youth team: Callan, Fowler, Box (Murphy, 69’) B. Tompkins, J. Tompkins, Edwards, Titchmarsh, Helcke (Bala, 87’), Chime, Hercules (Gleeson, 81’), Greco. Unused subs: Azaze, Ntalu, Kudrik, Fujah.

THE BEES FOUGHT HARD BUT WERE UNDONE BY A RUTHLESS SHEFFIELD UNITED SIDE AT THE PROACT STADIUM.

First half goals from Jade Pennock and Olivia Ferguson saw the hosts lead at the break, before Nikita Whinnett pulled one back for the Bees.

Lee Burch’s side continued to get into good positions but couldn’t quite breakdown the Blades in an open contest in Chesterfield.

However an instant response from Katie Wilkinson took the game beyond the Bees as they suffered defeat to the side who sit second place in the FA Women’s Championship.

Quantrill made a big stop on the stroke of half time as Ferguson went clear on goal, however our skipper on the day did brilliantly to deny her.

Both sides had chances in the opening 15 minutes as Merrick Will saw a header well saved, meanwhile up the other end Quantrill made a stop to deny Wilkinson.

Into the second half and after a bright start the Bees were back in the contest. Amelia Hazard found Whinnett who slammed the ball into the corner to give us hope.

But it was the hosts who took the lead after 17 minutes as Pennock stabbed home from inside the box following a swift Blades attack.

But almost immediately the two goal deficit was impounded on the Bees as former striker Katie Wilkinson slotted home after a defensive mishap.

Straight from the kick-off the Bees were almost level as Will shot over after an initial header was cleared off the goal line.

We continued to pressure the second placed team, but they stood strong and were dangerous on the counter attack.

Wilkinson then had the ball in the net, but thankfully the linesman’s flag denied the hosts a second goal.

Both sides had chances at the end, as first Horwood looked to be through on goal only for a last ditch clearance, meanwhile Pennock fired wide of the post in stoppage time.

The Bees had a massive chance to equalise as the ball fell to Nikita Whinnett from a corner but her effort was straight at the goalkeeper. We were punished on 26 minutes as the hosts did extend their lead, they broke quickly from a Bees corner, leaving Ferguson to slot home from six yards out. A cruel blow for the Bees who were well in the game throughout the opening 25 minutes. The hosts took a lot of confidence from their two goal advantage and continued to fashion openings, but the Bees defended resolutely against a top team. 35

LONDON BEES RAN THE LEAGUE LEADERS ALL THE WAY BUT LOST OUT TO A RUTHLESS ASTON VILLA SIDE WHO REMAIN UNBEATEN IN THE FA WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP.

LONDON

ASTON

BEES

VILLA

Lauren Pickett’s leveller on the stroke of half time looked to have snatched a point for Lee Burch’s side, but a late Emma Follis free kick gave the Villans all three points.

Up the other end, Nikita Whinnett was lively and saw an effort deflected into the gloves of Rogers. The second half an open affair, the Bees gave everything to take a priceless result.

The opening 20 minutes was a cagey affair, with the visitors dominating the possession without creating a clear opening. The Bees looked to get in the right positions but the final ball just wouldn’t fall to an amber shirt.

With 15 minutes to play the visitors retook the lead as Emma Follis struck home from a long range free-kick, it was cruel on Lee Burch’s side just as they looked to build some pressure.

Midway through the first half, the visitors took the lead as West ghosted in at the back post from a corner to tap home and give Villa the advantage. The league leaders continued to dominate and would’ve been two goals to the good, but for Sarah Quantrill who saved well at the feet of Sophie Haywood. It wasn’t all one-way traffic however, Lauren Pickett saw a deflected strike well stopped by Sian Rogers as the Bees looked to get back on level terms. Haywood was in again but yet again it was Quantrill who denied her as she got there just in front of the Villa attacker. Just on the stroke of half time we were level, as Pickett burst through on goal, before tucking it into the bottom corner, tucking away her 5th league goal of a prolific season. Into the second half and the first opening fell the way of the visitors as Quantrill had to be alert to tip over a looping effort from the edge of the box. 40

BARNETFC.COM

The visitors had more chances towards the end but again Quantrill stood firm to keep her side in the contest. The Bees huffed and puffed but couldn’t quite find that equalising goal on a frustrating afternoon at The Hive London. Burch’s side will look to build from the lessons learnt from today’s game as they travel to high flyers Sheffield United next Sunday, (2pm KO) in what looks set to be an intruiging match up. Our next game at The Hive is our last before Christmas as we take on Blackburn Rovers on Sunday 15th December. So please come along and cheer on the Bees in another crucial league match. Billy MEADOWS RIP Thursday 5th December 2019 was a sad day in Barnet Football Club’s history as another of the BFC family passed away. Billy Meadows was a goalscoring centre forward in the true sense, an ex-Manager of the club, as well as a great footballing character and one of the funniest men you could ever have met.

chances with the likes of Roger Figg and Les Eason in the same team. He then player-managed the club to promotion back to the Southern League Premier in 1978. This has earned him the eternal affection of the Barnet faithful as a Club legend. Bill was born in Bushey on 20th October 1942 and was the youngest of seven brothers and sisters. Future England Manager Ron Greenwood was a friend of the family and coached Bill at Harrow Schools. He then arranged a trial at Arsenal and at 15 Billy was a Gunner. He stayed for five years playing left midfield and in Bill’s words “Things didn’t work out, probably because of my youthful arrogance and I became slightly disillusioned with football and took a break for a couple of years”.

I will apologise in advance as this tribute will be coloured with a personal affection for Bill, as I was very proud to get to know one of my real life Barnet heroes as a dear friend. Over two spells Billy scored 93 goals in 202 appearances and 76 of them came in the 126 matches he played in his first two seasons at Underhill. Add this to the fact that he was competing for goalscoring

43

BARNETFC.COM

The team that day was: Brian Goymer, Roger Thompson, Jimmy Lye, Ben Embery, Gerry Ward, Barrie King, Colin Powell, Delvin Stevens, Les Eason, Roger Figg, Tony Turley, Sub Bill Meadows. In 1968-69 and the following season it was the combination of Meadows and Eason that terrorised the Southern League. 146 goals in all matches between them, a staggering statistic. It was a wonderful footballing side and a travesty as to how silverware was not won by that side. Bill was yet another player or supporter at the time who was certain it was the depth of squad we had or more precisely the lack of it, 15 or 16 players in all. I told Bill that Les had said that he was his perfect partner and Bill returned the compliment. “Yes Eason was the best. Could turn on a sixpence and was so sharp with a great brain, I was just the mug who did everything to get on the end of a cross or a pass or put my head in!” Their greatest moment together? “Probably when we beat Burton 10-0 and Les and I got 4 each”. In July of 1970 Bill’s contract was up for renewal and he asked then Manager Tommy Coleman for a rise of £5 a week which was refused by the Committee. Schoolboy error with respect Barnet FC! Bill signed for Hereford United and was soon to be followed by his great friend from Barnet Ricky George.

A phone call to the Barnet Manager Dexter Adams in 1968 went something like this ‘Hello Dexter, how would you like to sign the best centre forward in the Southern League?” Dexter came back with ‘Hello Billy how is your leg then?’ Bill had been suffering with a cartilage injury and was actually on crutches at the time and the wily old fellow knew all about it. Nevertheless he signed in July, for £15 a week!

Bill told me all about the great Hereford United games against Newcastle and West Ham – he kept all his press cuttings too. In Harry Redknapp’s autobiography, Billy is described as ‘Having more front than Southend’. Redknapp goes on to tell the tale of Bill’s ‘despicable and outrageous’ verbal wind up of Bobby Moore during the visit to Upton Park. “Mooro took it all in his stride and never lost his cool”. Bill said “We lost 3-1 at Upton Park in front of 42,000 with 1,000’s locked out. Geoff Hurst scored 3 breakaways and I scored at the end” Bill also would tell anybody who would listen that he was marked by the greatest central defender ever with immense pride, and why not?

Bill made his debut as a substitute on 17th August 1968 in a 1-2 defeat at Poole Town in the following line up in the old 2-3-5 formation. Bill scored our goal of course!

After a spell playing with FC Ostend in Belgium which incredibly involved flying out from Southend Airport every Thursday and

Bill picked up his career at Hastings United and found himself at centre forward an experience he described as a time where he “learned to jump and start putting my head where it hurt and lost teeth and broke my nose three times – idiot I know but I scored goals and was nicknamed Bill the Shoot because that’s how you score, it’s not rocket science is it?”

44

BARNETFC.COM

returning to his wife Pat and the family Karen and John after matches, Bill was coaxed back to Underhill. That period, 1973-75 especially was a fairly low point in Barnet’s history as far as results are concerned but Bill still scored goals. “When Manager Brian Kelly left, the Committee asked me if I would consider becoming player-manager. I said yes!”

Billy MEADOWS

With the help of Dave Underwood the club attracted a whole host of experienced pros to the club and some fine young talent. “I signed Marvin Hinton on the West Bank before he saw the dreadful facilities in the main Stand, I also signed John Fairbrother, Walter Lees and Terry Price in the same manner” laughed Bill. “Dave was responsible for getting Jimmy Greaves which really was something special and my old partner in crime Eason was back too. I played a bit at centre half or in midfield as my knees where getting dodgy by then but we won the Southern League Division 1 South playing some fantastic football” Bill’s departure from the club in 1978 was sad - “I was sacked, simple as that but things like that happened, no hard feelings” he reflects. “I took a long break and enjoyed the family again”. He hadn’t hung his boots up for good as he more often than not was found coaching local school children. Or he would be travelling all over the country to appear in Dennis Waterman’s X1 Celebrity matches doing his bit for Charity.

He made a memorable and hilarious cameo on the pitch in the Simon Emmett film Underhill at one point asking the camera “How can anyone miss the goal target 12 yards away from the penalty spot, look at the size of it. I didn’t miss”. And you know I don’t think he ever did! Tributes poured in on social media and BFC’s Message board from supporters young and old.

Bill and Pat moved to a lovely Bungalow in Berkhamsted where he became “a fully licensed cab driver” and enjoyed his Speedway at Rye House. To anybody who knew him this was the perfect job for him besides hitting the ball in the back of the net. He loved meeting and talking to people. Every year on my birthday Billy sent a card or would phone to wish me happy returns as we shared the same birthday. We would talk for ages and sometimes I would think will he ever stop but I will certainly miss those calls now. Mrs Reckless had numerous chats with him too - he was infectious. The stories he would tell were legendary and you were always royally entertained in his company. 45

Dreadfully sad news. Billy was a Barnet icon – Hoppy Great player and he looked a real tough guy to a wee kid like me. He even played a great game in my Subuteo team! – Amber Forever What a striker he was. Great header of the ball. Such power. - Marko Sad news, I got to know Billy in the late 00’s early 10’s as he was a regular along with his son John at Rye house speedway. - John Erroll I used to drive past his house on my way to and from work and often popped in for a cup of tea and was always made very welcome RIP Bill - Derek Scott Very sad news, a great centre-forward who scared the pants off many a centrehalf. - Dick Rolf Tough as old boots, if he had one leg he would try and carry on, put his body on the line to score many a brave goal – Baza A proper centre forward for Barnet FC when he played, with a tremendous scoring record - Richard M With Bill as Manager my first real taste of ‘glory’ as a Barnet supporter - promotion back to the Southern League Premier. - Let it Bee

HIS FUNERAL WILL TAKE PLACE ON MONDAY 30TH DECEMBER AT HENDON CREMATORIUM IN HOLDERS HILL ROAD NW4 AT 2 O’CLOCK.

RIP BILLY MEADOWS 20th October 1942 - 5th December 2019 202 appearances 93 goals.
