WRITES
Good afternoon everyone and a very warm welcome to The Hive London for this FA Trophy tie against Dorchester Town. and passion every week and I want the boys to continue playing like it’s the last game of football that they’re ever going to play.
I wish to extend that welcome to Steve Thompson, his staff, officials and supporters. I must start by thanking you - the Bee Army.
The atmosphere that we created at Bramall Lane last week, I want that here at The Hive. That is one of our targets as a team, myself and my coaching staff.
966 of you made the trip up to Bramall Lane last Sunday and I want to make you aware of just how important your support was to us that day. You all headed up there in the hope that we could pull off something remarkable, that small glimmer of hope that the magic of the cup could strike once more.
We want to start making this Football Club a proud Football Club again.
You all felt that magic, all 966 of you. The players, the staff, we all felt that magic and we felt the connection with the fans. I want to continue glueing everyone together, I want the fans to enjoy watching their team play with pride
Enjoy the match, #LetsBeeTogether

SKIPPER’S
NOTES
Hello everyone and welcome back to The Hive London for today’s FA Trophy tie against Dorchester Town! Back to today’s game and we have to avoid being on the other side of an upset ourselves. Dorchester come here with nothing to lose and I’m certain they’ll be giving their all, we have to match that to have any success.
Last Sunday was an unbelievable day for everyone involved. We got off to a great start and attacked them from the first whistle. The fans were out of this world, the support we had from minute one to minute ninety-five really helped the boys a lot.
We need to back up the last few results, bring those performances into the FA Trophy and the league and really push on into the New Year.
To go to third place in the Championship and win will live long in all our memories. Certainly one of the best, if not the best moment of my career so far. Brentford at The Hive awaits us in the next round, live in front of the TV cameras on a Monday night and it should be a special occasion.
Come on you Bees!
Callum
Hopefully, you can get the stadium packed out and buzzing and we can cause another upset.

The Magpies won the Championship of The Dorset League in 1937/38, and the Championship of The Western League in 1954/55. After joining The Southern League in 1972 the early years were a struggle, and it was not until season 1977/78 that the Club first tasted success, when they finished as runners up to Margate in Division One (South) and were promoted into The Premier Division. At the end of the following season, after a difficult campaign, The Alliance League (now the Conference) was formed, and The Magpies found themselves back in the reformed Southern Division. Dorchester then celebrated their centenary by winning the Championship of Division One (South) in 1979/80, by a one-point margin over Aylesbury. Relegated from The Premier Division at the end of the 1983/84 season, following a severe financial crisis, they only just avoided dropping out of the League in season 1985/86. However, a remarkable transformation was achieved, and Dorchester returned to The Premier Division as Champions at the end of the following season. For most of the seasons that they were back in The Premier Division, Dorchester were a mid-table team but season 1997/98 saw The Magpies achieve their highest ever Premier Division placing when they finished in fourth place, but the next two seasons were very disappointing, with relegation only just being avoided on both occasions and in 2001 The Magpies lost The Premier Division place that they had held for fourteen seasons. The Magpies threatened to regain their Premier Division status in their first season in The Eastern Division, but finished in third place behind Champions Hastings Town and Runners Up Grantham Town, however they achieved their objective the following season, when after a fine campaign, with only five defeats, the Club returned to The Premier Division as Champions.

Town
FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY Founded in 1880, Dorchester Town Football Club participated in The Dorset League from 1896 to 1947, and The Western League between 1947 and 1972, before joining The Southern League, where they remained until gaining entry into the newly formed Football Conference South in 2004. They were relegated back into The Southern League in 2014.
In season 2003/04 Dorchester won The Southern League end of season play off competition, defeating Bath City in the Semi-Final and Tiverton Town in the Final, played at Exeter City’s St. James Park, to gain entry to the newly formed Conference South. Following their elevation to the Conference regional division, apart from the first two,

and seasons 2011/12 and 2012/13, they invariably struggled in the lower half of the table, but in season 2012/13 The Magpies finished in their highest position, when they attained eighth place, which was a great achievement for the small market town of Dorchester with a population of 19,000. Sadly season 2013/14 was a nightmare campaign, and The Magpies finished rock bottom, and were relegated back into The Southern League Premier Division, where they initially struggled to “stop the rot”, but results improved following a managerial change at the turn of the year, and Dorchester ended the season safe from the threat of another relegation in seventeenth place in the final league table. The Magpies position in The SPL was consolidated the following season when they finished in thirteenth position.
The Magpies, then in the Eastern Division, won the Southern League Cup competition in season 2001 - 02, convincingly defeating then Premier Division King’s Lynn by an aggregate score of 4-0 in the two leg Final. Prior to that Dorchester’s most successful season in that competition was 1991 - 92 when they finished as runners up to Dover Athletic. Previously they reached the semi-finals in 1981 - 82 when they lost to Wealdstone, and they reached the same stage again in 1998 - 99 when they were defeated by Cambridge City. Dorchester have won the Dorset Senior Cup on twelve occasions, the most recent being season 2011 - 2012 when Wimborne Town were beaten in the Final played at the County Ground at Hamworthy. Dorchester moved to their current ground, The Avenue Stadium in August 1990, which is literally a few yards down the road from their old home. The ground stands on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, and Prince Charles, in his role as Duke of Cornwall, took an active interest in its design, making a number of private visits during construction, before officially opening the ground on the 20th November 1991. A Tesco supermarket has been built on the Club’s previous ground, which they had occupied since 1929. The highest attendance for a league game at The Avenue Stadium is 4129 for the match against Weymouth on the 1st January 1999, although the stadium capacity is 5009, with seating for 710.
Season 2016 – 17 was another difficult season, and relegation was just avoided with a draw on the last day of the season, and last season saw the club make a difficult start, before another managerial change resulted in fortunes improving, and a finishing position of nineteenth was achieved comfortably avoiding any threat of relegation. The Magpies have enjoyed significant success in cup competitions over the years, and have reached The Second Round Proper of the FA Cup on four occasions, including the fine achievement in season 2012 – 13 when they eliminated Sky Bet League Two side Plymouth Argyle in The First Round Proper at The Avenue Stadium, a game which was televised live on ESPN, and the first time The Magpies had eliminated a Football League side. However they were then knocked out in the next round by Luton Town at Kenilworth Road. The most recent run to The Second Round Proper, prior to 2012, was in 1981, when they lost to AFC Bournemouth after a replay, before a crowd of 8700 at Dean Court. Previously they had played York City and Plymouth Argyle, at that same stage of the competition, both in the 1950’s. They have also reached The First Round Proper on six other occasions, with their opponents being Norwich City, QPR, and Port Vale, again all in the 1950’s, Gloucester City in 1989 90, Oxford United in 1995 - 96, and finally in 2000 - 01 when Wigan Athletic were the opposition at The JJB Stadium, when The Magpies went down 3-1 after a fine display.
In May 2013 Chairman Shaun Hearn transferred half of his majority shareholding in the club to the Community Trust, with the commitment to see D.T.F.C become fully community owned, a process which was completed in 2015. This has introduced an entirely new business model to the club, which now needs to run in a sustainable manner in order to protect its long-term future. This is a daunting, but exciting, venture, which should bring long-term benefits to both the club and the wider community as they become more closely involved with each other. Supporters can now have a real say in how D.T.F.C. is run by the new Board of Directors, for the first time in its history it is truly OUR club.
Dorchester
Town
In the FA Trophy The Magpies have twice reached the last sixteen, firstly in 1971 - 72 when they lost to the holders Telford United after a replay, and then again in 1996 - 97 losing to eventual winners Woking.

STEVE THOMPSON MANAGER
Thompson joined the Royal Air Force from school and played for Saltash United in the Western League. He progressed to be a Fitness Instructor in the RAF, but continued his football career, joining Bristol City in July 1981 and making his Football League debut the following season. He joined Torquay United in February 1983 on a free transfer, but made just one appearance, as a substitute, before returning to the Western League with Falmouth Town and then rejoining Saltash United. In 1987, he was on the verge of joining Yeovil Town, but the RAF posted him to West London and he joined Slough Town instead. He joined Martin O’Neill’s Wycombe Wanderers in February 1992 for a fee of £15,000 and was part of the Conference and FA Trophy double-winning side. The following season, Wycombe’s first as Football League side, Thompson played in the victorious Division Three Play-off final at Wembley in 1994. He moved to Woking in August 1996, winning a second FA Trophy winners medal against Dagenham and Redbridge in 1997 and scored the last minute equaliser in Woking’s surprise 1–1 draw with Premiership side Coventry City in the FA Cup. Together with Kevan Brown, Thompson joined Yeovil Town in March 1998 for a combined fee of £7,500, playing in the side while also acting as the club’s fitness coach and working part-time in the postal service. When Yeovil manager Colin Lippiatt resigned at the end of September 1999, Thompson took over, initially as caretaker, but was awarded the job permanently on 10 November 1999. In March 2000, David Webb took over as manager, with Thompson becoming player-assistant manager. He remained as assistant manager after Webb left, working under Colin Addison and Gary Johnson. Johnson left to manage Bristol City in September 2005 and Thompson was appointed as manager for a second time the following month. In May 2006, Thompson reverted to his first team coaching role at Yeovil and was replaced as manager by Russell Slade, and enjoyed a successful spell as assistant to Slade, the highlight of which was reaching the League 1 Play-off Final at Wembley Stadium in 2007. Since leaving the first team at Yeovil Thompson took up positions there as coach, assistant manager and eventually manager. However, during his time on the coaching staff Thompson appeared in some friendlies and reserve team games. Despite being 45 years old and believed to be retired from first team football, Thompson was selected as a substitute on 12 August 2008 for the first team’s League Cup win over Charlton Athletic due to a lack of players, but he never made it onto the pitch. Thompson returned yet again to the caretaker role for just 1 game after the resignation of Russell Slade on 16 February 2009. Two days later he was released from the club after nearly 11 years. He was replaced by new player-manager Terry Skiverton. After leaving Yeovil he started playing again at the age of 46 on non-contract basis for Bridgwater Town and also had a spell at Shaftesbury Town. On 29 December 2009 Thompson was appointed manager of Southern Football League Premier Division team Truro City. On 29 March 2010 Thomson left the club by ‘mutual consent’ after only winning 5 out of his 18 games in charge and any chance of reaching the play-off’s unrealistic. Following the appointment of Garry Hill as manager of Woking in January 2011, Thompson was appointed as assistant manager at the Conference South club. He helped the team win the Conference South title, the club finishing the season with over 100 points. On 20 September 2017, Thompson was hired as the new first-team manager of Southern League Premier Division side Dorchester Town.

ALEX JONES
ALEX JONES DIGRESSES A HUNDRED BILLION PER CENT
Dorchester
We’ve got Darren Currie
There is only one news item in town after the events of last Sunday. I wore a Barnet hat and toasted my birthday with a Malibu at Our Mags’ pub. Then there was unprecedented media coverage, as BBC Radio Five Live commentated on the last few minutes of action from Bramall Lane. One excitable caller, when questioned on 606, insisted we deserved our victory “one Hundred Billion per Cent”. This greatly amused Chris Sutton and co-host Alistair Bruce-Ball. There has been several other media reports and comments in the subsequent hours, often involving Darren Currie. Credit Sheffield United fans and Chris Wilder for being gracious losers, and several Bees fans have wished the Blades the best in their promotion push. In my time, the only comparable victory was at Ninian Park in the League Cup, when Cardiff were similarly placed to Sheffield United in the Championship and were to be involved in the playoffs of 2006. Tresor Kandol was involved that evening, scoring twice, but Sunday must eclipse that.
I have yet to visit the Avenue Ground, home of our opponents this afternoon, not even during the brief time when AFC Bournemouth ground shared. My good friend Annie Smullen recently saw the Cherries for the first time, and I wryly observed how Barnet visited Dean Court before the billions were invested. In contrast, buckets were passed around to help secure Bournemouth’s future, How dramatically their fortunes have changed in the last decade. Back to this afternoon, the Trophy is a possible route to a Wembley Final, and consequently, both sides will be eager to triumph, with the arch already in view from certain sections of the Hive.
Obviously, I am slightly paraphrasing the words of Buster Bloodvessel, which led to a popular nineties terrace chant at Underhill. Incidentally, I taught Buster’s goddaughter, Miss Emily Bridges, and her dad Martin might be here today. During the festive break, Darren was promoted and has already made his presence felt. Good luck to John Still in his retirement, and I remember my conversation with our caretaker boss in 2001 when he apologised for the relegation. Both Darren and Barnet have evolved since. I was later to see him play for Hendon. Not having possessed a great deal of pace in the first place, he could adapt to the slightly more physical Isthmian League. One such game was at Lewes where Darren played against Scott McLeish, Scottie having been a friend on the terraces of Claremont Road back in the day.
Brentford So the Fourth Round draw followed the Wolves game. The Bees were correctly identified as the only surviving Non-League side. As Klopp’s men had only just been put to the sword, it follows that Barnet are better than Liverpool. TV Coverage and kick off times had yet to be decided as I type this, but the positive effect of our progression cannot be overemphasised.
Only Connect We encountered Boreham Wood on two occasions over the Festive period. Last weekend Lincoln travelled to Goodison, and involved in the match were two individuals who will have made their mark on this area, namely John Akinde and Bruno Andrade. Brunski, as his many Twitter followers will know him, won the final penalty ever seen at Underhill. The many stories involved in the subsequent FA Cup draw include two managers from my homeland. Tony Pulis was born and bred in Newport, Middlesbrough’s opponents, whilst Steve Lovell is a Swansea Jack and Gillingham will play Swansea City in front of our FA Cup correspondent, Mr Joe Gibney. Victoria Coren Mitchell, are you making notes here.

Adam MEKKI
Starting out in the Reading youth team, Adam Mekki switched to Aldershot Town’s youth set-up in 2006. After three years developing with the Shots, he was given his first professional contract in the summer of 2009. During the 2010/11 season, Mekki was training regularly with the first-team however the club decided it was best for the youngster to go out on loan. A loan move to Oxford City in January 2011 showed his potential; two goals in six games in the Southern Premier League saw Mekki becoming a known name in Aldershot. Upon his return, Mekki featured for the first-team in the remainder of that season. It was in the following campaign, 2011/12, that the tricky, pacy winger featured for our visitors Dorchester Town. Plying their trade in the Conference South that season, the Chester-native made five appearances for The Magpies, failing to score though. After his time with Aldershot came to an end in June 2014, Adam was snapped up on a free by then-Barnet manager Martin Allen in August 2014. With wingers in the form of Luisma Villa, Lee Cook and Andy Yiadom already at the club, Adam was brought in as reinforcement. Putting on the black ‘n’ amber shirt nine times under Allen, Mekki was on the winning side six times, which ultimately helped us on our way to the Vanarama Conference title that season. After his time with the Bees, Mekki continued playing in the fifth-tier with Dover Athletic, Tranmere Rovers and is currently with Bromley.

Benjamin BUCHEL
Buchel has had quite the career it can be easily said. Still only 29-years old, Buchel has played in three countries, been at 12 different clubs and has featured for his national side 21-times! Initially starting his career with his local team FC Ruggell in Liechtenstein in 2006, a move to Swiss outfit FC Widnau came shortly and he then later joined another Swiss club in the form of USV Eschen-Mauren. Appearing 74-times for USV Eschen-Mauren, Bournemouth, then in League One, acquired the player on a six-month deal back in August
2012. The Cherries were keen for their young ‘keeper to get minutes under his belt so he moved to Dorchester Town on loan in February 2013, making three appearances for the club. Numerous loans followed with Poole Town, Havant and Waterlooville and Welling United. After failing to break into the Bournemouth first-team, Benjamin was released at the end of the 2014/15 season but soon found a home with Oxford just months later. Sharing goalkeeping duties with Sam Slocombe, the 6ft 2 European was
getting game time but he soon fell out of favour when Simon Eastwood joined the club. Needing game-time, Buchel joined the Bees. With injuries to Graham Stack and Jamie Stephens, Martin Allen needed a goalie so Buchel joined on an emergency loan deal in March 2017, appearing four times and seeing the ball go past him six times during his short stay in North London. The Liechtensteiner can now be found playing for Swiss second-tier club FC Vaduz.

MATCH REPORT
The Bees knocked out Championship side Sheffield United thanks to a Shaq Coulthirst penalty! A day that will live long in the memory of Bees fans, players and staff alike as Shaq Coulthirst’s early penalty slays Championship Sheffield United in the Emirates FA Cup 3rd round. 84 league places separated the two teams before kick off however it was Barnet who were by far better the team. Darren Currie named an unchanged squad to tackle the formidable task of high flying Sheffield United and boy, did it pay off! The signs were there from kick off. A swift counter attacking style caught Sheffield United cold on a lovely day in South Yorkshire. Shaq Coulthirst, Medy Elito and Ephron Mason–Clark caused the Blades backline all sorts of problems. Coulthirst and Mason–Clark had chances to break the deadlock earlier as they burst into the opposition box on multiple occasions. But another characteristic counter attack left Mason–Clark one on one with experienced defender Richard Stearman, the veteran brought down the young man who’s pace proved too much for him. Up stepped Shaq Coulthirst to cooly if not all together convincingly slot the penalty away. It was completely deserved. 1-0 to the delight of the 966 travelling Bees fans who were in magnificent voice for the full 90 minutes. Mark Cousins had precious little to deal with in the goal and it’s credit to the exemplary performance from a very organised Barnet team. Dan Sweeney and Callum Reynolds bettered their Sheffield counterparts in all aspects, allowing only two shots on target the whole game. However, without Cousins between the sticks the Bees would be heading for a replay. Right at the death with Barnet sitting deep. Leon Clarke’s flicked header off a scuffed Mark Duffy shot looked for all the world to be heading in but for Cousins to stick a hand out and tip the ball onto the bar. A truly sensational stop. Chris Wilder after the game said that “tactically, mentally and physically” the Bees were better. And he’s not wrong! A completely deserved victory where there were more goals in the Barnet side then just the one. BARNETFC.COM 31

MATCH REPORT
The Bees battled hard but came away from the game disappointed after only drawing with Boreham Wood. Shaq Coulthirst had the first effort of the game two minutes in, but his effort was claimed by Huddart. Justin Shaibu forced his way into the box before delivering a cross that was cleared behind. Tom Champion headed over the following corner. The Bees were attacking well and Ephron Mason-Clark was enjoying himself out wide, causing plenty of issues for the Boreham Wood defence. Jack Taylor fired over the bar, as did Coulthirst midway through the first half. Ricky Shakes had a powerful effort at goal held by Mark Cousins before Charlee Adams shot high over the bar. Skipper Callum Reynolds had to be replaced shortly after the restart, coming off worse for wear following a clash of heads. His replacement Simeon Akinola almost gave Barnet the lead, but he came up just short on the slide attempting to poke home Mason-Clark’s through ball. Mason-Clark then had an effort palmed away by Huddart before there were big appeals for a Barnet penalty waved away after Akinola’s shot appeared to strike the arms of Champion. Moments later, Boreham Wood were lucky not to be reduced to 10-men after a reckless challenge from Kieran Murtagh was only given a yellow card. Barnet took the lead in the 68th minute thanks to a wonder strike from Ephron Mason-Clark. The 19-year-old cut inside to shoot on his left foot from the edge of the box and fired it high into the top left corner. Huddart then produced a great save to deny Taylor from doubling the lead Boreham Wood were given an opportunity to tie the game after being awarded a controversial penalty late on following a foul by Akinola. Bradley Ash stepped up and calmly slotted it home, sending Mark Cousins the wrong way in the process. BARNETFC.COM 35

OVER THE HEDGE As a self-confessed groundhopper I would be the first to back the argument that the idiosyncrasies of British football grounds have historically added flavour to the match day experience, even if some of that character has derived from looking back on the past through rose-coloured glasses.
expense that has to be maintained and has to be kept tidy, but we just wouldn’t do without it.” Folklore has it that William Wallace is connected in some way to the Hedge. But those tales are as historically inaccurate as Mel Gibson’s movie Braveheart – or Gibson’s accent in the role, for that matter. As Ferguson explains, “We hear many stories. There was a stupid one that William Wallace once hid behind the Hedge, which was impossible because it wasn’t even planted then!”
An increasingly rare example can, however, most definitely still be found at Brechin City. With a population of around 7,000, Brechin is the smallest conurbation in Britain to host a senior league football club - but more importantly it is perhaps the only senior ground in Europe with a HEDGE surrounding its perimeter.
If you want to see for yourself – and also soak in the emotion and love felt in supporting the very smallest of clubs – check out Ross Cunningham’s tremendous documentary “The Glebe” on YouTube.
Non-League grounds have them, but not the professional leagues. Except at Glebe Park. Don’t just take my word about the lure of the Hedge. “See Football’s Most Famous Hedge” was ranked No.31 in FourFourTwo magazine’s Football Bucket List in 2017. (The No.1 spot, by the way, went to “Play Football on Top of a Skyscraper in Toko” - for more details, Google “Adidas Futsal Park” – although Glebe Park is a far better option for those with a fear of heights.)
Back in 2009, a huge rumpus ensued over the fact that Brechin’s pitch was 3 yards (2.1m) shy of the 70 (64m) minimum set by UEFA. To correct the discrepancy would have meant tearing down the Hedge, and ultimately the compromise of a hefty – but suspended - fine by the SFA quietly put the matter to rest.
Chairman Ken Ferguson clearly recognises PR value of his asset. “We are proud of the Hedge. It gives a certain unique feel to the ground. It’s obviously a feature. It’s an
It does mean that Glebe Park cannot currently host Champions League football, but I am sure the club will cross that bridge when it comes to it.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
WHAT’S THE BUZZ JOSH PALMER
Leyton Orient manager Justin Edinburgh has revealed that he is looking forward to February when the January transfer window is closed. After the window closes, non-league clubs can still sign players, but Premier League and Football League sides can only sign players for the next 2 ½ weeks. This comes after strikers Macauley Bonne and Josh Koroma have received heavy coverage in the press in recent weeks, claiming that the two players are major interests of several Football League clubs. Zimbabwe international Bonne has scored 12 goals in 17 appearances so far this season, and Koroma has 9 goals to his name in 26 appearances. “There have been no bids received, that’s all there is to say really” said Edinburgh. “We rate both players very highly as everyone knows but there has been no offers put to the club”.
Also on the move is Connor Dymond. Playing for us on loan from Crystal Palace in 2014, featuring six times and scoring once, away at Cambridge United, he has since played for six different clubs. A short loan at Newport County followed, before a transfer to Bromley. After just a season, he moved on to Welling United, also spending a season there. This season he made short stints at Hemel Hempstead Town and Kingstonian, before departing at the end of last month. He now finds himself on the south coast with Isthmian League Premier side Margate. CONNOR DYMOND
Another former Bee finding another home is Scott McGleish. He played 151 times in black and amber, scoring on 42 occasions in his three and a half seasons at Underhill between 1997 and 2001. He started out his career at Hendon, before moving to rivals Edgware Town, where his form of 32 goals in 36 Isthmian League Division 2 games caught the attention of Charlton Athletic. He moved to Peterborough United and Leyton Orient before returning to North London with the Bees. A move to Colchester United followed, then transfers to Northampton Town, Wycombe Wanderers and Bristol Rovers, amongst others. Whilst at Rovers, he returned to Barnet on loan in 2010, playing 9 more times. Since then, he has dropped down the leagues, playing for the likes of Enfield Town and Wealdstone, and most recently Chesham United, where he left in October. However, at the end of last month, he returned to his very first club Hendon, as a player-coach.

CHARLIE CLOUGH
Moving on to a new club this week is former Bee Charlie Clough. Playing here at The Hive last season, he departed the club upon our relegation. Over the summer, he joined his former club Sutton United but left them at the end of December. He now joins up with Adrian Pennock, his former manager at Forest Green Rovers, in a very unlikely place – Brunei. This week Clough signed for Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota FC, who despite being from Brunei, currently play in the Singapore Premier League, having previously also played in the Malaysian Super League, having not played in their home countries’ league since 2004. Also at the club is former Preston North End and Hibernian defender Brian McLean.
WHAT’S THE BUZZ
The FA have joined Derbyshire Police in investigating what appeared to be reports that a fan attacked Ebbsfleet United goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore during the National League match away at Chesterfield. United had been winning 3-0 at half time, but Chesterfield came back to draw the game 3-3 in the 95th minute. Following the dramatic last-minute goal, some fans celebrated and jumped onto the pitch, with one being seen to attack Ashmore. Some allegations suggest that the incident relates to racial abuse. “The club will fully co-operate with Derbyshire Police and the FA investigation which is now underway” said Chesterfield in a statement. “The implications for the club are very serious and an appeal is made to supporters to not engage in matters of pitch encroachment at any time. There have also been a number of serious allegations relating to racial abuse and physical contact involving opposition players”. Ashmore was also involved in an incident with fans in an away game at Boreham Wood back in November when he jumped into the crowd and confronted fans over alleged abuse from them. NATHAN ASHMORE
NEIL McFARLANE
Monday morning saw National League North side Kidderminster Harriers announce the departure of manager Neil MacFarlane. The former Queen’s Park, Heart of Midlothian and Queen of South player had only joined the Worcestershire club in May 2018 and had led the side to a good start to their league campaign. However, the side currently find themselves in 9th place, two places and 1 point off of the bottom playoff place. “Following mutually amicable discussions, it has been agreed that Neil MacFarlane and the Club will part company with immediate effect” said a club statement. “The club would like to wish Neil every good fortune for the future. Senior players Jimmy O’Connor and Russ Penn will join Colin Gordon in overseeing first-team affairs for the remainder of the season”.
Last week also saw another managerial departure, this time at Evo Stik Northern League side Workington AFC. Gavin Skelton had only been in charge of the Reds for six days when the side travelled to Stafford Rangers last weekend, which resulted in a 1-1 draw. His only other game with the club was a 2-1 defeat at Stalybridge Celtic. “His decision came as a shock to the Board of directors, who felt they had appointed the right man to take the club forward. Chairman, John Mackay, worked tirelessly over the Christmas period to negotiate his release from Carlisle United and was understandably disappointed by the news” said an official club statement. “The Board had structured a full-time post for Skelton, which would have seen him combine his managerial duties with the community side of the club”. He leaves the side sitting second from bottom in the league table.
GAVIN SKELTON
PADRAIG AMOND
“No-one will want to get us because it is a potential banana skin” said Newport County striker Padraig Amond. This came after the Welsh side shocked Leicester City in the FA Cup last Sunday. The side had taken the lead early on in the game, but the former Premier League champions equalised with 8 minutes to go. However, the former Shamrock Rovers, Sligo Rovers and Pacos de Ferreira man scored a penalty several minutes later to send the side to Round 4. The side reached that stage last season, defeating Leeds United before losing to Tottenham Hotspur. Although several players in the Foxes squad had been rotated, it still contained five of the Premier League winning squad.
BARNETFC.COM 40
Forest Green Rovers chairman Dale Vince has compared Bolton Wanderers attempts to sign striker Christian Doidge to prime minister Therese May’s Brexit deal negotiations. Since joining the Gloucestershire side in 2016, Doidge has made 88 appearances, scoring a decent 47 goals. This prompted interest from Sky Bet Championship side Wanderers over the summer. Bolton took the Welshman on loan in August and has since managed 1 goal in 17 appearances, with a permanent deal due to go through this month. However, the deal collapsed due to the Lancashire sides’ registration embargo, meaning that they cannot register new players, due to the club owing money to at least one outstanding creditor. This also affects signings Remi Matthews and Gary O’Neil. The three players cannot play for the club unless expressed permission is granted by the Football League and FA. “[It] reminds me of Theresa May saying she’ll still get a Brexit deal. It’s not going to happen” Vince said. “They haven’t even paid his wages for the past four months - we have”.
DALE VINCE
JOHN SHERIDAN
Following the departure of Martin Allen two weeks ago, former Spireites boss John Sheridan is set to return to Derbyshire to take over the vacant managerial position at Chesterfield. The 54-year-old resigned as boss of Carlisle United last Friday after having been in charge for seven months. He was previously in charge of the side between 2009 and 2012, winning League 2 in 2011 and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in 2012. The side currently find themselves in 22nd place in the National League table, two points off of safety, having won just 4 league games all season. They have been relegated twice in as many years, dropping into non-league for the first time in 119 years at the end of last season, having been in League 1 as recently as May 2017.

THE RECKLESS GUIDE
THE RECKLESS GUIDE TO
Braintree Town 19 • 01 • 2019 - KICK OFF: 3:00PM
LOCATION: IRONMONGERY DIRECT STADIUM, CRESSING ROAD, BRAINTREE, ESSEX, CM7 2ED
PHONE: 01376 345617
His first taste of management was at Waltham Forest and has also been in charge at Thurrock and Grays. He was number 2 to John Still at Luton for three seasons between 2013-16. He is still very fond of our club and has made no secret that he would love to be a part of it again one day.
KEY PERSONNEL This will be tinged with personal fondness of my dear old friend Haken Hayrettin who is the caretaker Manager at Braintree and has been since October 2018 – this is his second spell at Cressing Road. Hak was a Bee for 4 seasons and was part of the brilliant Conference winning squad of 1990-91. For the reunion party a few years back in the Durham Suite, ‘H’ was the first to answer my emails and texts to the players. After leaving Underhill and a short loan at Torquay he won another Conference title and an FA Trophy Medal with Wycombe Wanderers. A serious knee injury then put pay to his full time playing career and he later played at Harrow Borough, Boreham Wood and Rushden & Diamonds.
BRIEF DIRECTIONS BY ROAD M25 to junction 27 and up the M11 north to its junction 8 (Stansted Airport). Take the A120 east (Colchester) for approx 16 miles until you reach the Galley Corner roundabout – it has one of those unmentionable Scottish sounding hamburger thingys! Turn left into Cressing Road where you will find the ground on the left after ¾ of a mile entry via Clockhouse Way.
CAR PARKING There is a small car park at the ground which fills up very early and sometimes is open only to officials and VIPs. Local street parking is unrestricted.
DIRECTIONS BY TRAIN Braintree station is situated just under a mile away from the ground. It is served by trains from London Liverpool Street. It is a fairly complicated 20-minute walk to the ground from the station (around the houses) so a cab is made for sharing, don’t you think?

Our last meeting was in September 2014 and a point in a 1-1 draw thanks to John Akinde. The Toby Carvery and a pre-match Roast in Notley Cross Braintree CM77 7AJ ticks the boxes for me. If arriving by train then you may care to visit a Wetherspoons outlet called the Picture Palace on Fairfield Road, which is only a five-minute walk away from the station. This converted former cinema is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. The Wagon and Horses on South Street is also a goody.
CELEBRITY WATCH Keep your eyes open for Steve Harley (he of Cockney Rebel fame), actors Rupert Everett and Malcolm McFee (Peter Craven in Please Sir! and once Landlord of the Wagon and Horses pub) and keep your ears out for the sounds of Prodigy the hardcore techno and rave band from the 1990’s. Liam Howlett and Keith Flint started a few fires in the area as kids!
GROUND DESCRIPTION
RUPERT EVERETT
STEVE HARLEY
The ground was first opened way back in 1923 but major upgrading began in the early 1980’s. The current main stand recently extended, straddles the halfway line and has room for 550 with open terracing either side, the opposite is the centrally covered Cressing Road Terrace holding around 1,100. The open Quag End to the right is a fairly new terrace – uncovered now but the original terracing did have cover – and this area is usually allocated to visiting fans. However, the Cressing Road side terrace is offered as an alternative should a large visiting contingent attend. The Clubhouse Terrace at the far end completes the layout and has also been recently overhauled and is also uncovered. The ground capacity is just over 4,000 in total.
ADMISSION PRICES ADULTS £19.00 CONCESSIONS £12.00 UNDER 18’S £6.00 (may require ID) The game may have been allocated a B game rating and therefore the adult price could be £2.00 cheaper

SHEFFIELD UNITED AWAY POSTCARD On top of already being excited for our FA Cup 3rd round tie, I was even happier that the tie was right on my doorstep in South Yorkshire. This meant me and my family could leave Leeds around midday and take a short drive down the M1 arriving in Sheffield at about 1pm. This left us plenty of time to find parking on the small streets that surrounded Bramall Lane before me and my brother ended up walking all the way around the ground just to get a club badge! We arrived in the away end which was already packed and buzzing, eagerly awaiting kick off. The teams came out to a great reception from the 966 Bees fans and the game was underway. We started the game very strongly and confidently and even had the ball in the back of the net on 6 minutes though it was ruled offside. We continued to have flair going forward particularly from Coulthirst & Mason-Clark and Robson took a shot that went just over the crossbar. On 20 minutes Mason-Clark was brought down in the box and the ref pointed at the spot awarding us a penalty. As Shaq took the run-up, my Mum decided she couldn’t watch whilst I had to have it videoed. Thankfully, despite their goalkeeper getting a hand to it, the ball fired into the back of the net to give us the lead. I cannot describe how it felt! We kept up the momentum in the rest of the half and went into half time with a 1 goal lead. After my usual hot chocolate and a half time lesson from my brother about the geography of Yorkshire, the teams came back out for the second half. We started this strongly too, with a great cross from Mason-Clark which was just blocked by their defender before reaching Shaq and a header from Reynolds that was tipped over. Sweeney was the next to have a chance from close range after a corner was crossed in but unfortunately it fell just at the wrong place for him to finish it. We knew the game was going to get tighter on 65 minutes when Sheffield United brought on their star striker, Billy Sharp. Despite this though, we continued to be a threat going forward and dealt well with any of their shots. On 89 minutes, Cousins made the save of the season when he somehow kept out a close-range shot from Clarke. Just when everyone thought the stress was over, there was 5 minutes added time! However, for one of the first times in my life, I didn’t feel the slightest bit of nerves and I was sure we had this is the bag. Though it was a relief when the ref finally blew his whistle and all of our fans went crazy! The boys came over, everyone as happy as each other and it was a great moment for them to soak up the atmosphere from the crowd. It was also lovely to see Darren Currie joined by his Uncle (Sheffield United legend) Tony Currie on the pitch. Eventually, the players made their way back to the dressing room to applause from some of the opposition fans too & a handshake from their manager too whilst our chants were still ringing out loud. Before going back to the car we went to see fellow Barnet fan & Yorkshireman Jonathan who had been in the director's box due to his links with the club. It was great to hear lovely comments from all the Sheffield United fans about our performance too. We made our way back to Leeds in great spirits and being so close to home meant we were in time for our Sunday roast too! It was such a special day seeing our biggest win and us giant-killing too I am so proud of such a good team performance from the boys. Bring on the next round.
