SIAN OSMOND
Sian, after coming off a hard-fought victory at Hounslow on Wednesday night, how do you reflect back on the match? “You have got it spot on. It was a really tough evening. Credit to Hounslow because they made it really tough for us. “We had to make a few changes for the midweek game, which made it slightly harder. “Complete credit to all the girls on Wednesday. Not every win is going to be pretty and I will take an ugly 1-0 win all day. “They went out and did what we have asked from them at half-time which secured the three points.” There were many changes before the game and at half-time as you mentioned. You have got to give credit to the girls for playing with the same fight and determination as they have done across the past few matches? “We have had to make changes at half-time. It is a massive credit to the character of the girls that have been involved because they have given 110% for us. They have still worked incredibly well. “Hounslow made us work for it though as they pushed us right until the final whistle during the week.” Nikki Jancey popped up the winner at Rectory Meadow to score her third goal in two matches since joining. You must have been impressed with her performance? “This is what we brought Nikki into the Club for. We know that she is prolific and we are so excited to see what else she can offer. “I am sure that she is going to continue to grow and get stronger as the season goes on. Nikki has been fantastic for the first two games that she has been with us.”
The defence also played a big part in Wednesday night’s win. We were really resilient to the challenges that Hounslow threw our way. What did you make of their display throughout the match? “They defended really well and had to fight and scrap for it. Parker Dunn was absolutely superb during the 90 minutes. “The way that they have battled to calm the squad down when required was fantastic and exactly what was needed.” We have now recorded back-to-back victories after beating Hounslow 1-0. Both wins have been very different from each other which surely gives us a lot of momentum going into Chichester this Sunday? “We just want to build up some momentum which is tough because the games will come thick and fast. “We are aware that a lot of players have played a lot of minutes recently, but we have to rely on the squad-depth which is what we used well during the week. “It is massively important that we use the positive energy that was in the dressing room to carry on through until Sunday.” Looking ahead to Sunday, we’re back at The Hive London to take on Chichester and Selsey FC. What are you expecting from this one? “We know that they are going to be really tough opponents and are aware that they have got some really good results recently.” “It is going to be another hard-fought game and we know that they have got some really good technical players in the squad.”
WHAT’S THE Buzz
WHAT’S THE Buzz Manchester City have signed Australia international Alanna Kennedy from Tottenham Hotspur. The 26 year old, who has 98 international caps to her name, with 8 goals, including one against Great Britain at his summers’ Olympic Games in Tokyo, joined the North London side in August 2020, when Covid 19 issues prevented her from continuing to play for Orlando Pride in the NWSL. She joined the Citizens on a two year deal, having previously played for Sydney FC (in four separate spells, Newcastle Jets, Western Sydney Wanderers, Perth Glory and Melbourne City in her native Australia, and Western New York Flash and Orlando Pride in the USA.
Leicester City have announced that their Women’s team will join their men and play the majority of their WSL fixtures at 32,000 capacity King Power Stadium. The Foxes played in the Championship last season, but gained promotion to the top tier. When there is a fixture clash, they will play their other fixtures at the Pirelli Stadium, home of Burton Albion.
FIFA have reportedly contacted the governments of several countries, requesting that female football players from Afghanistan are evacuated due to the situation in the Asian country. This comes after the players are said to be fearing for their lives after the Taliban took over the country, with many having gone into hiding. This comes after girls and women were prevented from education and from being able to play under previous Taliban control.
WHAT’S THE Buzz
The draw for the second and final round of qualifying for the Champions League has been made. Arsenal and Manchester City are both in the league path. The Gunners overcame Okzhetpes and PSV of Kazakhstan and the Netherlands respectively in the first round, whilst this will be City’s first match. The Gunners will play Slavia Prague, whilst the Citizens will play Real Madrid. The only other British side in the competition at this stage, Glasgow City, will play Servette Chenois of Switzerland, in the champions path. Other notable ties include Levante vs Lyon, VfL Wolfsburg vs Bordeaux, Twente vs Benfica, and Vllaznia (Albania) vs Juventus. Ties will be played this week, and next week.
Everton have broken their record women’s transfer fee to sign 18 year old Sweden international Hanna Bennison. Following being involved in Great Britains’ Olympic campaign over the summer, Lucy Bronze has now had surgery on her knee.
The Toffees have signed the youngster on a four year deal Swedish side Rosengard for a “substantial six figure sum”.
The defender joined her current club Manchester City from Olympique Lyonnais last September, but will likely miss the opening WSL fixtures and Champions League Qualifiers.
She is the third Swedish international (who won silver medals at this summers’ Olympic games) to sign for the Merseyside club, alongside Nathalie Bjorn and Anna Anvegard.
