WRITES

Darren Currie

Good afternoon everyone and a very warm welcome back to The Hive for this National League fixture against Sutton United. I wish to extend that welcome to Paul Doswell, his staff, officials and supporters. Consistency is now the key as we look to build momentum going into the second half of our season. What we have shown is that we have good players and that we can be a very good team. It’s now about how regularly we can achieve good results. I thoroughly believe in these boys, I work with them day in and day out - I know they are good players, I just need to see it more regularly. They’re enjoying their football and it seems the fans are too. It has been great to see the fans backing us in big numbers, it’s a huge positive for me and my staff and I know the players appreciate it too. It helps the players raise

their levels, so we need to take that cup feeling going into these all-important league fixtures. Today will be a tough test against a side established at this level and looking to make the next step.

It’s a challenge we are up for and one I’m looking forward to. Enjoy the match, #LetsBeeTogether

Darren

SKIPPER’S

NOTES

Hello everybody and welcome back to The Hive as we return to National League action for just the third time in 2019. Our cup run has come to an end and I know all the boys appreciated all your support. We’ve made plenty of great memories and it was great to be backed by so many people both home and away. Who knows, on another day with a bit more luck on our side, we could be talking about a Fifth Round tie but to be the last non-league side in the competition was a great achievement.

and are hoping the fans can give us the same levels of support they have shown in recent weeks.

Get behind the boys from the first minute to the last today and enjoy the game,

We now return to our bread and butter in the league and need to start climbing our way back up the table. We have a lot of football to be played in the next few months, but the boys are looking forward to it. We’re looking to build on our momentum generated in cup competitions in the league

Come on you Bees!

SUTTON UNITED CLUB HISTORY Sutton United Football Club was formed on March 5th 1898 by the amalgamation of two leading junior sides, Sutton Association and Sutton Guild Rovers. Although the new club quickly made its reputation in local junior leagues, progress was unremarkable until 1910, when the decision was made to seek Senior status as members of the Southern Suburban League, and in the years before the First World War the Club played at a variety of local grounds, including one season at the Sutton Adult School Ground (click here for detailed ground history). When the Club returned to the Adult School premises in 1919, ownership switched to the local council and that ground in Gander Green Lane has been home to the U’s ever since. In 1934 its name was changed to the Borough Sports Ground and in 2017 it became the Knights Community Stadium. Sutton United was elected

into membership of the Athenian League in 1921 and, after seeking re-election in 1926, the Club revived to capture its first Athenian League Championship in 1928. During the thirties the club established itself as a rapidly developing force in the amateur game and enjoyed several good runs in the Amateur Cup. The semi-finals were reached in 1929 and 1937 but on the first occasion the Club was expelled from the competition because two players were found “guilty” of also playing Sunday football. Football carried on in a reduced format during World War 2 and the U’s gathered a momentum which would sustain them throughout the next decade. The goals of a young centreforward, Charlie Vaughan, helped the team to a succession of wartime honours and when the Athenian league recommenced in the 1945/46 season, his haul of 42 league goals helped the side to another title success. The

BARNETFC.COM 10

Surrey Senior Cup was also captured for the first time. Vaughan soon turned professional with Charlton Athletic and although the 1950s brought few major playing honours, they were a time of great change for the Club, which was widely acknowledged as one of the most imaginative and forward-thinking clubs in the country. Assets were transferred to Sutton United Ltd in 1953, with current President Andrew Letts as Chairman of the Club and of the new limited company, and a large new stand was constructed. Top young coaches were brought in to improve the side, including Jimmy Hill and Malcolm Allison, although Ron Greenwood was turned down, but it was not until the advent of George Smith as manager that success returned on the field. The Athenian League title was won for a third time in 1958 and that year the London Senior Cup was captured for the first time.

Quickly establish themselves as a Conference club, the U’s were usually just outside the chasing pack at the top of the table, and set a Conference record with a 9-0 away win at Gateshead, and also recorded a remarkable 8-0 home win over Kettering. That stay in the Conference lasted five years, with the team always comfortably mid-table until the last few disastrous months of the 1990/91 season brought relegation as an inevitable consequence of injuries and a goal drought.

Progress accelerated under the guidance of Sid Cann, an FA Cup winner as a Manchester City player, and the Club’s “Golden Era” commenced with a visit to Wembley for the 1963 Amateur Cup Final, which was lost 4-2 to Wimbledon, when Eddie Reynolds scored 4 times with his head. That summer the U’s were elected into the Isthmian League and in 1967 they won the league title, the first of four successes to date. Another trip to Wembley followed in 1969, ending in defeat again at the hands of North Shields, and in 1970 the Club enjoyed nationwide fame with an FA Cup 4th Round clash at home to the mighty Leeds United, who fielded eleven full internationals and won 6-0. Cann’s charges finished as runners-up in the league on 2 occasions and won the county cup 3 times. In 1974 Cann was replaced by his former captain, England international Ted Powell, but United went through a series of managers in quick succession,

including current Crewe boss Dario Gradi, before Keith Blunt steadied the ship. His major achievement was to guide the team to win the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1979, the 2-1 win in Chieti being the only time an English club captured the trophy, before taking over at Malm and being succeeded at The Lane by Barrie Williams. Despite being hot favourites against a team from a lower division, the U’s lost the 1981 FA Trophy Final to Bishop’s Stortford, 1-0, and finished as league runners-up in 1982 after holding what had seemed an unassailable lead. In 1983 a treble of the Surrey Senior, London Senior and Hitachi Cups was completed, with two retained the following year, and in 1985 the Isthmian League title was captured once more. Controversially, promotion was not sought because of problems connected with the ground but the title was retained in 1986 and the U’s joined the Vauxhall Conference.

BARNETFC.COM 11

During that spell in the topflight, however, the U’s established themselves in the national consciousness with two notable FA Cup runs, including wins over Aldershot and Peterborough and, famously, Coventry City in the 3rd Round in January 1989. Tony Rains and Matt Hanlan scored the goals in front of a crowd of 8,000. The Club also captured the Surrey Senior Cup a record six times in succession. Even in 1991, the team continued to show good cup form and lifted the Bob Lord Trophy and also recorded that 9-0 win away to Gateshead. Hopes of a quick return to the top flight following relegation were not realised, despite two top-three finishes, but the Club could boast of a growing list of players who were transferred into the Football League. That list was spearheaded by Efan Ekoku, but also included Paul Rogers, Andy Scott and Robert Scott, who all joined Sheffield United, Stuart Massey and Andy Barnes (both Crystal Palace), Ollie Morah (Cambridge Utd) and Mark Watson (West Ham). Mark subsequently rejoined the Club. A little earlier, record goalscorer Paul McKinnon had been sold to Blackburn Rovers. More FA Cup glory was tasted in 1993 when both Colchester and Torquay were beaten on their own turf before a 3-2 defeat at Notts County in Round 3. In 1996 a new managerial team took over, brothers John and Tony Rains,

second and third in the club’s all-time list of leading appearances (behind Larry Pritchard). They guided the team to third place in each their first two seasons, just failing to celebrate the Club’s Centenary by securing promotion into the Conference. That lapse was rectified in 1999, when after Christmas the U’s put together just the sort of run that was needed, 13 wins and 3 draws in 17 matches, to overhaul long-time leaders Aylesbury and eventually finish 11 points clear of the field. The Surrey Senior Cup was also won with a 3-0 defeat of Carshalton Athletic in the final. Unfortunately, the club did not have the resources to bring in the necessary players to strengthen the squad. In most games the U’s gave as good as they got, but there was a noticeable problem scoring goals. Having seemed set to pull clear of the relegation zone at Christmas, the U’s struggled to win games and were relegated again after just one season. In their first two seasons since rejoining Ryman League ranks Sutton failed to mount a serious promotion challenge, but developed a strong youth team that reached the third round of the FA Youth Cup in 2001. Several members of that side featured in the first team the following season as Sutton figured in the upper reaches of the table for much of the time before finishing 6th and rounding off the season by beating Kingstonian in the Surrey Senior Cup final. After an uncertain start to the following season saw U’s near the relegation zone a superb second half to the campaign, in which they were beaten just three times in the league after October and took 28 points from their last ten games, culminated in a 5-0 win at Basingstoke which clinched runners-up spot. They were unable to retain the Surrey Senior Cup, however, losing narrowly in the final against Woking. That form inevitably attracted the attention of other clubs, and five of the

squad left to begin the following season with clubs in the national Conference division, with midfielder Nicky Bailey, a member of the successful youth side two seasons earlier, going on to help Barnet to the Conference title and play an important part in their Football League return. He then moved to Southend three seasons ago for a £175,000 fee, and then to the Championship with Charlton, where although the club was relegated he was voted Player of the Year in 2009, and in 2010 he commanded a £1.4 million fee when joining Middlesbrough before joining Millwall in 2013. His success continued a trend of Sutton producing players who would go on to enjoy successful professional careers, following Efan Ekoku, Paul Rogers, Andy Scott, Rob Scott and Eddie Hutchinson. The need to rebuild the side resulted in U’s struggling to make an impact in Conference South, with three mid-table finishes. John Rains stood

BARNETFC.COM 13

down as manager in March 2006, and he was replaced by Ian Hazel, but the 2007-08 season saw U’s struggle from the start and by the end of March their relegation had been confirmed, with two changes of manager during the season. Although the end to the season showed signs of promise under former player Jimmy Dack he declined to take the job on a permanent basis and Paul Doswell, who had achieved great success with Eastleigh in recent seasons, was appointed in the middle of May 2008. After missing out on promotion in the play-offs in his first two seasons, as well as overseeing a first appearance for fifteen years in the FA Cup 1st Round, he guided U’s to the Isthmian championship in 2011, and the following season saw them finish fourth in Conference South, losing to Welling in the play-offs, and also reach the second round of the FA Cup, where their tie at home to Notts County was televised on ESPN.

OPPOSITION

Sutton were again in the play-offs in 2014, losing to Dover after finishing second in the table, but last season they went one better as an unbeaten run of 26 league games from the middle of November saw U’s overhaul long time leaders Ebbsfleet and clinch the Vanarama National League South championship, returning to the highest level of non-league football for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

DAN FITCHETT

In their first season back at National League level Sutton finished 12th, the highest of the promoted clubs, but it was the FA Cup for which the season will be remembered as U’s made history

by reaching the 5th round for the first time ever. After a last minute winner at home to Forest Green had seen them through the 4th qualifying round, they won 6-3 at Dartford before beating League Two Cheltenham thanks to another very late goal. In the third round U’s scored three times in the last fifteen minutes to win a replay at AFC Wimbledon after a goalless draw, and then in front of the BT cameras they beat Leeds 1-0 to gain revenge for the result 47 years earlier. The fifth round saw U’s drawn at home to Arsenal and put up a creditable performance in a 2-0 defeat televised live on BBC1.

Sutton have also made great strides off the pitch in recent years,, establishing close links with the local community through initiatives such as two Community Fun Days per season, organised with the local Metropolitan Police Safe Neighbourhoods Team, and earning the status of FA Charter Standard Community Club in 2010. The work done as part of the club’s Football Development Plan has seen football return to the adjacent Collingwood Recreation Ground with the thriving colts’ section, and in 2013 the club was awarded Business of the Year and was also winner of the Commitment to the Community Award in the Sutton Business Awards. After a programme of improvements which has seen all four sides of the ground redeveloped in the last thirty years, a 3G pitch was installed in summer 2015 and is used by Combined Counties League club Sutton Common Rovers, and AFC Wimbledon Ladies, as well as providing an all-weather sports facility for the local community.

Terry Sullivan’s late angled drive gave Bishop’s Stortford a narrow 1-0 victory over the following Sutton team: Dave Collyer, Steve Rogers, Bobby Green, John Rains, Tony Rains, Micky Stephens (Ray Sunnucks), Keith Waldon, Larry Pritchard, Mike Cornwell, Ian Parsons, Graham Dennis. Sutton were without injured top scorer Micky Joyce for the FA Trophy final and finished fifth in the Isthmian League Premier Division that season.

1984/85 Sutton United won the Isthmian League Premier Division title in 1984/85. Barrie Williams’ side made a magnificent 21 match unbeaten start to the season and scored 115 goals as they gained 84 points. They slammed seven goals past Harlow and Hendon, also hammering Walthamstow Avenue 6-1 and securing a 5-4 win over Epsom & Ewell. The U’s clinched the championship with a 2-0 victory at home to Windsor & Eton on the last Saturday in April. Leading scorer Paul McKinnon and Micky Joyce netted 64 goals between them. Sutton decided not to take the chance of Conference football as they were not prepared in terms of finance or facilities.

1985/86 Sutton United achieved the Isthmian League and Cup ‘double’ in 1985/86. The U’s were only seventh in the table by early November but eight successive wins catapulted them to the top by the turn of the year. Barrie Williams’ side extended their unbeaten League record to 24 games and retained the championship in an exciting climax to the season. Despite losing 2-0 to title rivals Yeovil Town in front of 5,348 at Huish at the end of April, they won five of their last six games. Paul McKinnon was leading marksman as Sutton also won the AC Delco Cup, beating Uxbridge 3-1 in the final, as well as winning the Surrey Senior Cup for the fourth successive year.

1988/89 Sutton United made headlines with an FA Cup third round win at home to top-flight Coventry City in 1988/89. The U’s defeated Walton & Hersham 3-0, Dagenham 4-0 and Aylesbury United 1-0 en route to the third round. Skipper Tony Rains' opener was equalised by Coventry's David Phillips but Matthew Hanlan's 58th minute goal gave the following Sutton team a 2-1 win over the Sky Blues: Trevor Roffey, Robyn Jones, Tony Rains, Nigel Golley, Vernon Pratt, Paul Rogers, Micky Stephens, Phil Dawson, Lenny Dennis, Paul McKinnon, Matthew Hanlan. Coventry had won the FA Cup two years earlier. Sutton lost 8-0 at Norwich City in the fourth round.

2015/16 Sutton United won the Conference South title in 2015/16. Despite losing their opening match 2-0 at home to Maidstone United, Paul Doswell’s side lost only two more games before a 1-0 home defeat by Hayes & Yeading in early November. The U’s then put together a remarkable unbeaten run of 25 Conference South games, including a notable 2-0 victory over title rivals Ebbsfleet United watched by 3,142 at Gander Green Lane in mid-April. Sutton clinched the title with a game to spare after winning 2-0 at home to Chelmsford City. They won 26 of their 42 Conference South games and gained 90 points, finishing six above runners-up Ebbsfleet.

2016/17 Sutton United reached the FA Cup fifth round in 2016/17. Paul Doswell’s side beat Forest Green Rovers 2-1, Dartford 6-3, Cheltenham Town 2-1 and AFC Wimbledon 3-1 to set up a fourth round tie with Leeds United. Jamie Collins’ 53rd minute penalty gave the following Sutton team a 1-0 win in front of 4,997 at Gander Green Lane: Ross Worner, Kevin Amankwaah, Simon Downer, Jamie Collins, Dan Spence, Maxime Biamou, Craig Eastmond (Baboye Traore), Nicky Bailey, Adam May, Roarie Deacon, Bedsente Gomis. The U’s were only the ninth non-League club to reach the fifth round since 1945 and lost 2-0 at home to eventual winners Arsenal.

ALEX JONES - DIGRESSES

ALEX JONES DIGRESSES SUTTON

December ‘89

Following the pantomime of the FA Cup and the televised game, it’s back to League action. Sutton United know all about the former, following their game against the Arsenal, which I watched at the New Swan Ystalyfera, including the infamous Piegate. Listened to the first Brentford game on BBC London whilst watching the satellite coverage. On the other media stream, known as Twitter, Danny Baker, who trades under the name Prodnose, referred to proceedings as magnificent, and the free kick as good as anything you will see. Danny also advised us that football did exist before the Premiership was formed when the Shamen were Number One with Ebenezer Goode. Congratulations Dan Sparkes, who was rightly lauded as Goal of the Round by the BBC viewers. I have visited Gander Green Lane on several occasions, including a meeting of the Football Supporters Federation, when the advertising board, normally used for proclaiming the next opponents, had been altered to advertise the FSF event. I also saw the chocolate and yellow Sutton strip at Claremont Road on more than one occasion.

December 30th 1989 Sutton United travelled to Underhill. I know this as it was my first season as a Barnet fan, although I was not present at the game, being home for Christmas. The final score was 4-1 to the Bees, completing a double for Barnet as they had registered their first away win earlier in the season on a Tuesday night 3-1, two goals for Dave Regis. The Barnet scorers for the Christmas game were Edwin Stein, Andy Clarke, Gary Bull and once again Regis. Surprising with such a formidable strike force that we were not to gain promotion that particular season. Not sure which star was on the cover of the matchday programme, but the cartoonist certainly had a way with caricatures. Instead consider the programme from my first Barnet game, a few months earlier.

Champions Reunited Thursday 11th April sees a special event at the arts depot Finchley. Young Barnet Foundation Ambassador Giuliano Grazioli

Further FA Cup news BBC Wales stepped in with coverage of the Fifth Round tie. Another challenge for Joe Gibney on his road to Wembley. Having initially been blessed with local games, and a couple of reasonable journeys to Gillingham, he now has to pay a kings’ ransom for a second- disrupted journey to Swansea. At least the other weekend, he visited several decent public houses in my birthplace and got to sip Gower Gold. Joe’s assessment was that Swans were thoroughly deserving of their win, but now Swans stand close to a little bit of history- two successive Cup Quarter Finals. I was pleased to tune into the One Show for the draw as that evening it featured Lauren Laverne and Alex Jones. The conclusion of these notes was delayed to incorporate our relay against Brentford. So our adventure is over, but well done Darren Currie for leading the team to Barnet’s most successful Cup run ever, so now we are obviously the best team in North London. BARNETFC.COM 29

invites you to a reunion of the 2005 Championship winning squad. Tom Watt will compere the event, and for advice on the identity of the growing guest list, please speak to Pete Williamson. Alternatively, there is the youngbarnetfoundation website. Simon King and Liam Hatch will both make an appearance, some debate online as to whether Chris Plummer’s three appearances qualified him. Either way, it promises to be a grand evening.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS Number One on the evening we clinched promotion was Amarillo by Tony Christie and Peter Kay. I had irritated my class at the time by assuring them that I would keep playing the song until we were assured of promotion. With seven weeks at the top of the charts, I was safe in that promise, and the Underhill crowd regularly rocked the terraces with their version of the Sedaka song. Therefore if the music is played at the event, Amarillo should definitely be on the playlist.

MATCH REPORT

A replay will be required after Carshalton’s second half fight back earns a draw in the Third Round of the Buildbase FA Trophy. Barnet controlled the first half with 78% possession but struggled to break down a stubborn Carshalton back line. The dead lock was eventually broken when Ephron MasonClark was fouled, giving Shaq Coulthirst the chance to add another to his tally and he duly dispatched the spot kick. Mason-Clark was played through by Taylor shortly before the half time whistle and he could make no mistake from close range. The hosts came out a different side after the break and pulled one back in the 69th minute through a powerful Olawale Sogbanmu from a corner. Shaq Coulthirst added a third soon after however with a wonderfully struck curl into the top right corner from 20 yards out. The Bees were pegged back once more when a corner was flicked on and Sogbanmu’s effort struck Byron Harrison and crawled over the line. With two minutes to play, the referee pointed to the spot after a soft challenge from Craig Robson was adjudged to have been enough for a penalty. Captain Bobby Price stepped up and duly converted. A replay will be needed to see who will progress through to the Quarter Finals, date to be confirmed. BARNETFC.COM 31

TAKING THE

TAKING THE MIC

Don’t Stop Believing There is a strange attraction in being drawn to a team that loses with relentless frequency. Something between obscure romance and masochism.

as of time of writing manage just two draws, ship 165 goals in their first 23 games and sit on -7 points for fielding an ineligible player.

East Stirlingshire grabbed national media attention as “the worst club in the country” when they finished rock bottom of the Scottish League five seasons running – I can personally recommend you to Jeff Connor’s book, “Pointless”, which details their unfortunate odyssey - and more recently New Mills attracted major press coverage when opening their 2015-16 season with 26 straight league and cup defeats and ultimately managing just 3 draws from their entire Northern Premier League campaign. Bashley managed just 2 draws – and shipped 201 goals – in that season’s Southern League, but somehow escaped the interest of the press.

So, should they stay or should they go? For those doubters who feel they bring nothing to the league, just listen to striker Scott Hunter’s words in the recent short documentary “A Long Way to Winning”: “Getting beat all the time, and getting beat heavily, it hurts. But at the end of the day if we don’t go out and play football, then there’s no football for the kids coming through. “As far as I’m concerned, as long as the club is alive – as long as the club is in the Highland League – then there is a chance that something could happen. If we were to say, “Right, that’s it, boys”, if we were to drop down to the amateur (ranks), then I reckon that’s the end of football in Fort William.

More recently, however, all the media focus has been on one club: Fort William. The Fort, as they are known, operate way off the beaten track in the north-west of Scotland, where shinty is king. They have finished bottom of the Highland League no less than 16 times in 33 seasons, and after not winning a single game last season and conceding 180 goals, their entire board resigned, and it looked more than possible that they would drop into local football.

“I think that we should be trying to keep this football club alive, for our kids, so that the next generation…. they’ve got a football club to go to. As long as this club’s alive, we’ve got a chance to get better. “So, yes, it hurts – but for the greater good.”

Ultimately, the Fort opted to retain membership of the Highland League, but another dour campaign has seen them

MASCOTS

This evening, we welcome our matchday mascots… Aaron Hunt! Aaron is ten years old and lives in Theydon Bois and goes to Ivy Chimneys Primary School in Epping. His favourite Bee’s player is our number 26, Dan Sweeney! Please give Aaron a huge reception as he takes to the pitch both before the match for a kick around and when he leads out the team for kick-off this afternoon for our National League fixture versus Sutton United FC. We hope Aaron and his family have an amazing time at The Hive and we look forward to seeing him again during the remainder of the 2018/19 season. Our previous home match versus Brentford FC saw Ibrahim, Avinash and Daniel as our matchday mascots. All the boys got to meet the manager and players pre-match where they had plenty of pictures and autographs to go with honour of leading out the Bees for kick-off. We hope they all had a great day at The Hive and we look forward to seeing them all again during the season.

If you are interested in being a match-day mascot for Barnet FC during the season, you can register your interest by contacting Matthew Dixon on 020-8381-3800 (Ext. 1040) / mdixon@thehivelondon.com

CHARITY COLLECTION We would like to thank all those who kindly donated to the Honeypot Children’s Charity before our last home match. MATCH REPORT

There will be a sequel to the ‘battle of the bees’ after Barnet held Championship side Brentford to a 3-3 draw at the Hive London on Monday night in the FA Cup fourth round. Third round hero Shaq Coulthirst scored two in three minutes in the second half after Brentford took a 1-0 lead into the break after an Ollie Watkins 40th minute opener. However, the Championship side hit back just shy of the hour mark as Neal Maupay scored from the spot before Sergi Canos put them back in front soon after. There was another twist to the tale though as Dan Sparkes came off the bench to produce an outstanding free-kick with 15 minutes remaining, taking the tie to a replay. The result means that our FA Cup dream lives to see another day. It was to be a solid start to the game for Barnet who made three changes from the side who lost to Braintree in their last fixture, including a debut for goalkeeper Will Huffer. The on-loan shot-stopper was called into action on a few occasions including the sixth minute when Maupay saw his effort saved on six minutes. The wood-work was to thank soon after though when Yoann Barbet’s header from a corner crashed against the post and out of danger. Huffer did well again to deny Josh Dasilva from distance before a brilliant curling strike from Moses Odubajo cannoned off the upright from 25 yards out. It was Barnet’s turn to try and open the scoring on 26 minutes when man of the match Dan Sweeney’s header from a corner was dealt with by Daniels. Odubajo then picked up a yellow card for a foul on Elito before Watkins’ tried his luck from distance and after an awkward bounce, found the bottom left corner. Craig Robson saw his effort on the edge of the box fall wide before Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Taylor failed to capitalise after a tackle on Coulthirst. It was Elito’s turn to try and find an equaliser before the break but his shot whistled wide of the right post. HT: 0-1 BARNETFC.COM 42

MATCH REPORT

SECOND HALF It was goals galore in the second half and it all started when Coulthirst fired home from close range five minutes after the break. Three minutes later and our number 10 turned the game on it’s head, tapping the ball into the bottom corner, making it 2-1 to the North London side. However, the celebrations were halted just before the hour mark when David Tutonda was adjudged to have brought down Watkins; the referee pointed to the spot. Top scorer Maupay stepped up to take it and made no mistake, slotting the ball into the bottom left corner, Huffer diving to his right. Coulthirst, on the hunt for a hat-trick, saw his header saved seven minutes later before hero-on-the-night Sparkes came on for Wes Fonguck shortly after. However, Brentford took the lead again two minutes later after Sergi Canos was played through on goal before calmly striking low past Huffer. However, the away celebrations were short-lived when Barnet were awarded a free-kick from 30 yards out. Substitute Sparkes stepped up to take it before bending a delightful effort around the wall, finding the net via the crossbar in spectacular fashion. The goal sent The Hive into frenzy but it was to be a very tense final 15 minutes. Huffer was on hand again to deny Maupay with 10 minutes to go before producing another good save to keep out Said Benrahma’s effort from distance. Odubajo then saw his low drive hit the post before Julian Jeanvier’s effort was blocked off the line following a corner. Elito then made way for Andre Boucaud just shy of the five minutes of stoppage time in which neither side could find a winner, taking the tie to a replay. 6,215 spectators attended the game making it a record turnout at The Hive London. DON’T MISS A GAME THIS SEASON WWW.FAWSL.COM/TICKETS

CARSHALTON AWAY POSTCARD After finally finding out where Carshalton was, I was looking forward to our FA Trophy tie there. I was able to enjoy a lie in on Saturday morning before getting up and making my way to Victoria to get a train around 1:30pm to Carshalton. I arrived there around 2:10, where I was fortunate to bump into another Barnet fan meaning I didn’t have to navigate my way to the ground on my own! We found the ground and were inside by half two giving me time to get some chips and find a place to stand in the unsegregated ground. Interestingly enough, one of the photographers who spoke to us before the game was a Brentford fan too! The teams came out and the game was underway. We started the game strongly, our first chance coming just 4 minutes into the game when Fonguck had a chance that was just over the bar. We had some more chances to score in the half but nothing came of Shaq’s shots. On 42 minutes though, the game changed when we were awarded a penalty after Mason-Clark was fouled in the box. Shaq stepped up to take it and put it away neatly. Just minutes later, on 45 minutes, Mason-Clark gave us another goal after finishing a lovely ball from Jack Taylor, meaning we were 2-0 up going into half time. During half time, we moved towards the other end of the ground where we were going to be shooting in the second half. It had suddenly got a lot colder but Carshalton did an amazing hot chocolate with cream on top so it definitely made it more bearable. Shortly after, the teams were back out with Boucaud coming on for us. Just 3 minutes into the half, Ashley Charles was responsible for clearing a Carshalton header off the line and a minute later, Will Huffer made an excellent save to keep out a close-range shot. It was clear Carshalton were up for the game. Both teams had a couple of shots but a goal didn’t come until 69 minutes when Carshalton got one back, heading a corner in. However, just 2 minutes later Shaq looked to have put the game to bed scoring a beautiful goal curling it into the top corner. 6 minutes after this, Carshalton managed to get another goal from a corner, though this time I think it was Byron Harrison who it, unfortunately, came off. Despite Carshalton pushing forward with their best efforts, we were managing to keep them at bay until 88 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after a challenge from Robson got him booked. Carshalton were able to put this away and level things up to 3-3 which is how the game finished. We walked back to the train station and the general mood amongst our fans was one of disappointment, mainly because this led to a replay which was another game we didn’t really need! We got on a train back to Victoria and then the tube and I was back home for about 7:30pm. Despite throwing away a lead, it was a lovely away day and Carshalton are a lovely little club. I just hope we can beat them in the replay!

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

WHAT’S THE BUZZ JOSH PALMER League 2 side Port Vale have appointed former player John Askey as their new manager. The former winger, 54, came through the academy with the Valiants, before leaving in 1983, without having made a single first team appearance. After a short spell as non league side Milton United, he then joined Macclesfield Town, where he became a club legend, scoring 155 times in 679 games between 1984 and 2003. He kicked off his managerial career almost straight away after retiring from playing, winning the reserve league with the Silkmens’ reserve side, before becoming the assistant manager, then the first team manager during the 2003/04 season. After some time away from the helm of the Cheshire club, in which time he did a bit of coaching, he was reappointed manager of the side in 2013, where he would spend five years, which included a Cheshire Senior Cup win in 2014/15, and FA Trophy final appearance in 2016/17, and the National League title in 2017/18. He started off this season as manager of Shrewsbury Town, before being sacked in November. He now takes charge of the Vale side as they sit in 18th place in the league.

JOHN ASKEY

Starting from next season, the National League will have a new title sponsor. Having been the title sponsor of the league since taking over from Skrill back in 2014, when it was still called the Conference, Vanarama will stop being the sponsor, being replaced by Motorama, which is a sister brand of Vanarama. Motorama is a personal car leasing broker and the newest branch of the Autorama Group parent company. “Following five seasons as the Vanarama National League, we are delighted to be signing up for a further three seasons as the Motorama National League”, said Michael Tattersall, the Chief Executive Officer of The National League. “Our relationship with the Autorama Group goes from strength to strength, and is a classic case of football sponsorship delivering value and helping to create a leading consumer brand”. They will continue to show many games live on BT Sport, as well as a highlights programme.

JOE THOMPSON

At the end of last week, Joe Thompson announced his retirement from professional football. The former Tranmere Rovers, Bury, Stockport County and Carlisle United midfielder, who has just finished his third spell at Rochdale, said that he has “pushed his body to the absolute limit”, after twice having to recover from cancer, aged just 29. His second comeback, in December 2017, he went on to score the winning goal that saw the club avoid League One relegation at the end of last season. “My decision to retire is one of the hardest I’ve ever made”, he said. “I have battled through some of life’s hardest challenges and have managed to overcome them. However, I’ve pushed my body to the absolute limit. My mind has grown stronger but with the intense treatment my body has had to endure over the last six years it is no longer able to perform to the demands of the professional game”.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

KOLE LAMBERT

Also retiring at the end of last week was former West Ham United, Burnley and Dagenham and Redbridge winger Zavon Hines. A decent career that has seen him make many appearances across each of the top five divisions of English football, he decided to retire last week due to persisting injury, despite having only been at his most recent club Bromley for just under 2 months. He has also turned out for the likes of Coventry City, AFC Bournemouth, Bradford City, Southend United, Maidstone United and Chesterfield. During his 11 ½ year professional playing career, he did not win a major trophy, with his biggest achievement being a League 2 runner up in 2012/13. “The past few weeks have been the toughest of my career. I’ve had to make one of the hardest decisions in my life and even now as I write this message I’m in tears.”, he said on his social media account. “But after getting medical advice and with a broken heart, I’m going to retire from professional football immediately. Mentally and emotionally this is difficult for me but I had a choice to make”.

ZAVON HINES

Current Championship title hopefuls Norwich City have signed up Kole Lambert from Nottingham based Northern Premier League Premier Division (the seventh tier of English football) side Basford United. The 18 year old joins the Canaries after a successful trial period, as is one of a string of players to have come through United’s academy to sign for professional sides. “Kole came to us after spells with a couple of clubs that didn’t really work out. We have worked with him and his attitude has been first class and his wish to succeed has been very impressive”, said Basford manager Martin Carruthers. “Over the year he has been at Basford Kole has progressed from the Academy to the First Team and became a real fan’s favourite, the experience he has gained here will I’m sure stand him in good stead at Norwich”.

RYAN HAYNES

The recent National League South fixture between Truro City and Eastbourne Borough attracted 341 fans, of which 340 were home fans. The White Tigers, who are the furthest south western City in the country, recently returned to their Treyew Road stadium after having spent some time groundsharing Plainmoor with Torquay United whilst there was some issues concerning their ground. Both sides currently sit in mid table, with Borough in 15th place with 34 points, and City in 17th with 30 points, having played 2 games less, as of time of writing. Despite just 2 points separating them in the league table, the two clubs are separated by a geographical distance of almost 300 miles, resulting in a journey of 600 miles. The side took only one fan with them, Ryan Haynes, who left home at 5am, and didn’t arrive back until 1am the following morning, on the team coach. “All the management, players and officials would like to thank Ryan for his support and dedication to Eastbourne Borough” said a club statement. “Truro is a long trip and fans like Ryan are the lifeblood of any non-league football club”. To make his 20 hour round trip more dreaded, his side lost 2-0. BARNETFC.COM 60

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

During the summer transfer window, former Bee Yannick Bolasie was subject to a loan deal to Belgian side Anderlecht. The DR Congo international scored 5 goals in a total of 48 appearances for the Bees during the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons, whilst on loan from Plymouth Argyle. Earlier in his career, he featured for Hillingdon Borough and Floriana of Malta, as well as then Conference Premier side Rushden and Diamonds on loan from Argyle, having spent time with the Northamptonshire side at academy level. After a season with Bristol City, he was promoted to the Premier League with Crystal Palace in the 2012/13 season, his first season with the club, featuring 90 times in the top flight. During the 2016/17 transfer window, he was transferred to Everton, going on to feature 32 times before being loan out to Aston Villa in the Championship earlier this season. After his season long loan was cut short, he now will play for the Belgian side until the end of the season. He has scored 9 goals in 33 international appearances for the Democratic Republic of Congo.

YANNICK BOLASIE

BEN TURNER

Mansfield Town of League 2 have snapped up Ben Turner on a short term deal, which runs up until the end of the season. He signs for the club having been released by former club Burton Albion on deadline day. “I’m absolutely delighted to sign”, said the 31 year old centre back. “It’s obviously a club that’s going places. The league table shows that the club has a massive chance of a getting promoted and I’m just really happy to join and be part of that”. He joins the side as they sit in second place in the league. He started out his career at the Coventry City academy, before going on to make 84 appearances during their time in the Championship. After loans at Peterborough United and Oldham Athletic, he signed for Cardiff City in the summer of 2011, where he would go on to play for four seasons. During that time, he won the Championship, made 31 Premier League appearances, and scored the equaliser against Liverpool in the 2012 League Cup final, which his side went on to lose on penalties.
