Simon B ASSEY
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Hive London for this afternoon’s National League fixture with Sutton United. Firstly I’d like to congratulate everyone associated with Sutton United on their title win, they are the most deserving team to have won the title and I wish them all the best in the EFL next season. Matt is a great manager and the Club is full of good people, so it’ll be a good test for us to finish on. On a side note, it was fantastic to see you on Tuesday night, I can only thank you for your vocal support from the stands! I felt we were good value for our win, our second-half performance, in particular, was pleasing and I could tell our supporters enjoyed it with the way you all got behind us. The two goals we scored were good strikes, with very good build-up play and I was of course delighted for Harry to score his first goal for the Club, it was great you guys got to see it as well! The second goal was a great move as well, it was brilliant from Skeffington to get us going before Tomi did well to find Woody who is always composed from those positions. To keep the clean sheet as well made it all the better from everyone involved. Now it’s about taking everything we’ve done in my short time here and putting in another strong performance to finish the season on a high. It’s going to be a really difficult game this afternoon and Sutton will pose us a very tough test, but we gave them a good game a few weeks ago and now we have to go one better in front of our own fans. Finally, I’d like to thank everyone for their support since I came in, it’s been a tough season for the Club but I can only thank you for the way you’ve supported us since my arrival. Let’s finish on a high this afternoon and head off to the summer break full of optimism ahead of next season. Have a great summer break and see you soon. Thanks for your support,
Simon

HARRY TAYLOR
After scoring his first Barnet goal on his 151st appearance, we caught up with Harry Taylor. On his goal: To score in front of the fans made it even more special! At one stage I thought I’d never get one after playing 150 games, but I thought I took it quite well. It was fantastic to celebrate in front of the fans! I think Woody has played a ball around the corner first time, I just saw a corner to go for and slotted it home.
On the fans: That’s what you do it for in football, you want the fans to get behind you, or even the opposing fans getting against you. The atmosphere makes football what it is really.
On the performance: We’ve been gradually as a team getting better, we’re more defensively solid recently as a team, I think we’re starting to take our chances more, even if we did mess a few up against Torquay! We’re making lots of chances now which is great for the team.
What’s changed: I think there’s more togetherness, I’d say we know what we’re doing more with our style of play and in each position. The most important thing is we trust each other more.
Sutton United: We’ve got to put a performance on against top of the table, obviously, it’ll be a tough ask and we’ve got to give it our all. That’s the minimum expectation from Simon, we just have to go out there each game and give it everything we’ve got.
Walking football
BARNET OVER 50’S Hurricanes, monsoons and Walking Football were all part of the fun of Friday at The Hive 2-3pm.
Despite the awful conditions, we had an excellent turnout! We thank Barry Lustigman for arriving early to set up the pitches so we were ready for action. After an hour of football, we returned to the hive bar a welcome event for hot drinks or possibly a few colder ones! We congratulated our player, 82-year-old Bob Fisher who is also the chairman of Hanwell town on their 1-0 victory over Harefield to win the Middlesex FA Senior Cup. Our Tuesday night sessions 730-830pm continue to sell out run by Gary Briggs with the community support of every player. This week our walking and cycle groups go again with the obligatory pub lunch break. So if you want to join our amazing social group email Barnetwft@ yahoo.com and we will see you next week same time same channel! Have a great summer Bees fans! Barnet Walking Football Team

TODAY’S OPPOSITION For the first time in their history Sutton United will be a Football League club when the 2021-22 season starts, having clinched the National League championship in the penultimate game of the season at home to Hartlepool, the finest moment in the club’s 123 year history. The club was formed on 5 March 1898 when a meeting of two leading local clubs, Sutton Association and Sutton Guild Rovers, decided that they should join forces. The amber and chocolate colours of Sutton Association were retained, along with both clubs’ grounds, and the United club’s first game was against Norwood & Selhurst FC . With two grounds available Sutton fielded three teams in the Herald and Surrey Junior Leagues, but the loss of Western Road after a year led to the disbanding of the third team. The senior side’s first honour came in the form of the Herald Junior Cup in 1902, the first of three successive triumphs in that competition.
In 1910 Sutton assumed senior status and joined the Southern Suburban League, and it was during the next decade that the club gained use of their present home in Gander Green Lane. After finishing as Southern Suburban League runners-up in 1920 they were elected to the Athenian League at the end of the following season, and celebrated by twice winning the Surrey Senior Shield. League form was more uncertain, and in 1926 U’s had to seek re-election, but were successful and recovered to win the championship just two years later. Over the next decade Sutton established themselves as a force in the amateur game, twice reaching the FA Amateur Cup semi-finals, although on the first occasion they were expelled from the competition after fielding two players who had played Sunday football and were therefore ineligible. Sutton remained to the fore after World War Two, winning the Athenian League for a second time in 1946, and coming second to Barnet on goal average the following season, while they lifted the Surrey Senior Cup, the first of fifteen occasions on which they have won the trophy. They also appeared in the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time. In 1953 the club became a Limited Company, and five years later won the league for a third time as well as achieving a first success in the London Senior Cup. In 1963 U’s made their first appearance at Wembley in the Amateur Cup final, losing 4-2 to South London rivals Wimbledon, and were one of four clubs elected to the Isthmian League. Champions in 1967 and runners-up a year later, Sutton again reached the Amateur Cup final in 1969, losing to North Shields, and the following season achieved national fame as
they made it through to the 4th round of the FA Cup and were drawn at home to Leeds United, then the top side in the country, who won 6-0 in front of a record 14,000 crowd. After another league runners’-up position in 1971, a less successful period followed until the appointment of former player Keith Blunt as manager in 1977. Two years after his arrival U’s made history as the first and only winners of the Anglo Italian semi-professional tournament, and although he departed to top Swedish club Malmo soon afterwards, his assistant Barrie Williams went on to guide the club through a period of great achievement. FA Trophy runners-up in 1981, losing to Bishop’s Stortford at Wembley, they were second in the league a year later as well as reaching the second round of the FA Cup, and won a cup treble of Isthmian League Cup, London Senior Cup and Surrey Senior Cup in 1983. Two years later U’s captured the Isthmian title, and having declined promotion, they repeated the success in 1986 and this time took their place in what was then the GM Vauxhall Conference. During their first spell in the Conference U’s hit the headlines with their FA Cup exploits. In the 1987-88 season they recorded their first win over Football League opposition, beating Aldershot 3-0 and then winning at Peterborough before going out after extra time in a third round replay at Middlesbrough. A year later they again reached the third round and their 2-1 win over Coventry remained the last instance of a side from outside the Football League beating one from the top flight of English football until Luton’s win at Norwich three seasons ago. Sutton also seemed established as a Conference side but in 1991, having recorded a record Conference away win of 9-0 at Gateshead, they picked up just one point from their last eight games and were relegated for the first time in their history. Although often around the top of the Isthmian League U’s could not realise their hopes of an immediate return, and it was in cup football that they enjoyed more success. In 1993 they reached the FA Trophy semi-finals, and another FA Cup run in 1993-94 produced victories over Colchester and Torquay before a narrow defeat at Notts County. The appointment in 1996 of the management team of John and Tony Rains, with over 1,400 playing appearances for the club between them, saw a renewed assault on the championship, and after twice finishing third they realised Sutton’s ambition of returning to the Conference in 1999, finishing eleven points clear of long time leaders Aylesbury after a run of 13 wins and 3 draws in 17 games. Unfortunately U’s found the gap to the Conference too wide to bridge, and seven consecutive defeats at the end of the campaign saw them finish bottom, but relief was provided in the FA Trophy where they beat three Conference clubs, including two of the eventual top six, to reach the semi-finals where their hopes were comprehensively dashed by ultimate winners Kingstonian. In their first two seasons since rejoining Ryman League ranks Sutton failed to mount a serious promotion challenge, but in the 2003-04 season, with a side containing several graduates from an outstanding youth team that had reached the third round of the FA Youth up in 2001, a storming second half to the season saw them finish as runners-up to Canvey Island and gain inclusion in the newly formed Conference South. John Rains stood down as manager in March 2006, and he was replaced by Ian Hazel, but the 2007-08 season saw U’s, who had previously finished consistently in mid-
table, struggle from the start and by the end of March their relegation had been confirmed, with two changes of manager during the season. Although the end to the season showed signs of promise under former player Jimmy Dack he declined to take the job on a permanent basis and Paul Doswell, who had achieved great success with Eastleigh in recent seasons, was appointed in the middle of May 2008. After missing out on promotion in the play-offs in his first two seasons, as well as overseeing a first appearance for 15 years in the FA Cup first round, he guided U’s to the Isthmian championship in 2011, and the following season saw them finish fourth in Conference South, losing to Welling in the play-offs, and also reach the second round of the FA Cup, where their tie at home to Notts County was televised live on ESPN. U’s were again in the play-offs in 2014, losing to Dover after finishing second in the table, and last season went one better, an unbeaten run of 25 league games from the middle of November saw U’s overhaul long-time leaders Ebbsfleet and clinch the Vanarama National League South championship and gain promotion to the National League for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. In their first season back at National League level Sutton finished 12th, the highest placed of the promoted clubs, but it was the FA Cup for which the season will be remembered as they made history by reaching the 5th round for the first time ever. After a last minute winner against Forest Green had seen them through the qualifying round, they won 6-3 at Dartford before beating League Two Cheltenham thanks to another very late goal. In the third round U’s scored three times in the last fifteen minutes to win at AFC Wimbledon in a replay after a goalless draw, and then in front of the BT cameras they beat Leeds 1-0 to gain revenge for the result 47 years earlier. The fifth round saw U’s drawn at home to Premier League giants Arsenal and put up a creditable performance in a 2-0 defeat. The following season the focus turned back to the National League as Sutton achieved their highest ever finishing placing of 3rd, but again suffered play-off disappointment, losing 3-2 at home to Boreham Wood in the semi-final. After a 10th placed finish a year later, Paul Doswell announced the end of his eleven year tenure, coach Matt Gray stepping in to the manager’s role and in his first season, with a much changed squad, U’s recovered from a disappointing spell to climb to a mid table position, losing only twice in sixteen league games prior to the season’s premature close, but retaining much of that squad for the 2020-21 season U’s were challenging at the top from the start, with the result being a place in the Football League for the first time ever. Off the pitch U’s have also made great strides in recent years, with their work in the local community seeing them win the Business of the Year award in 2013, and after a programme of ground improvements which has seen all four sides of the ground upgraded in the last 30 years, in summer 2015 a 3G pitch was installed at Gander Green Lane, providing a 7 day a week facility for the community, and used by several local clubs, most recently Sutton Common Rovers. However promotion to the Football League means that the pitch must be taken up and replaced with grass for the 2021-22 season.

After playing junior football in Australia he joined Liverpool and played for their Under 18 and reserve sides, and also had a loan spell with Accrington Stanley before joining Oldham, where he spent two seasons and played for the Latics in their 3-2 FA Cup defeat of Liverpool in January 2013. He has represented Australia at Under 17, Under 20 and Under 23 level, and also Greece, who he is eligible to play for through his parents, at Under 19 level.
Louis John DEFENDER WHO WAS A MEMBER OF THE SUTTON RESERVE AND YOUTH TEAMS BEFORE JOINING CRAWLEY From where he returned on loan in January 2014 before signing on a permanent basis at the start of the following season. He went on to make over 100 appearances, winning two England C caps, and then joined Cambridge United in summer 2018. He returned to Sutton in November 2019, initially on loan before signing a contract two months later, and recently made his 150th appearance for the club.
Harry Beautyman ATTACKING MIDFIELD PLAYER WHO REJOINED THE CLUB IN JANUARY 2018 FROM STEVENAGE Has now made over 200 appearances, scoring over 50 goals. He originally joined U’s in summer 2011 after being released by Leyton Orient, where he had been reserve team captain, and went on to score 24 goals in 105 games over the next two seasons, winning the Supporters’ Club Player of the Year award in his first season and earning recognition at England C level. He joined Welling in 2013 and subsequently earned a move in to the Football League with Peterborough the following year. He spent the 201617 campaign with Northampton before joining Stevenage at the start of the following season. Last season his seventeen goals from midfield saw him voted Club Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Supporters’ Club Player of the Year, and earned him inclusion in the National League team of the season.
Isaac Olaofe STRIKER WHO REJOINED THE CLUB ON LOAN FROM MILLWALL IN OCTOBER. Originally signed on loan in February, he played five games before the season was cut short, and then began this season on loan at St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership before returning to Millwall at the beginning of October.
What’s the Buzz Josh Palmer With the 2020/21 season now coming to a close, with the last league fixtures being played today (with only the playoff fixtures yet to be played), several clubs have started planning for next season. One of those clubs is Bracknell Town, who have signed former Bee Dave Tarpey. Tarpey started his career at Henley Town, before moving on to the likes of Basingstoke Town, Hampton and Richmond Borough, Walton and Hersham, Chertsey Town and Farnborugh, before ending up ad Maidenhead in 2014. He would spend just over 3 years with the Magpies, scoring 95 times in 141 appearances, including 45 in 44 matches during the 2016/17 season, where the side won the National League South, as well as the individual awards of the divisions’ Golden Boot and Player of the Year. He would then spend two seasons at the Hive, although his spell with the club was hindered by an anterior cruciate ligament injury in only his second match. He would score just once in 17 appearances in black and amber, before loans back at Maidenhead then Woking, which later became a permanent deal. He now signs for Isthmian League Division One South Central side Bracknell Town.
Hampton and Richmond Borough have revealed an updated version of their club badge, to commemorate their centenary season. The club, who currently compete in the National League South, had the badge design provided by FotMob and Mundial. The club were formed in 1921 as Hampton FC, but changed their name in 1999 to the current version to attempt to draw in a wider support from around the Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The Beavers currently boast former Bee Sam Cox in their ranks. The club officially began their centenary season on Tuesday 25th May, as that date was said to be the same date that 100 years prior, 40 people had seconded a motion that the club be formed.

With this season still yet to finish, the National League have announced the dates for the 2021/22 season. The first round of fixtures will be played on Saturday 21st August, with the last to be played on Saturday 21st May 2022. The playoffs will start off on Wednesday 25th May, and will end wit the final on 5th June, although this is subject to FA approval. The festive period will see Boxing Day fixtures played on Sunday 26th December, as well as the Bank Holiday fixtures on Tuesday 28th December. The New Years’ Day fixtures have been scheduled for Sunday 2nd January 2022, NOT New Years’ Day itself, although clubs can mutually arrange to move matches to either Saturday 1st or Monday 3rd, with both days being Bank Holidays.
With the league restructuring by the FA taking place this summer, several of our local rivals have moved division or league. Edgware Town have been transferred to the Combined Counties Premier League North Division from the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division, as have Wembley and North Greenford, with St Panteleimon being promoted to the division from the Spartan South Midlands League Division One. Enfield Borough, Hillingdon Borough, London Lions and Rayners Lane have all been transferred from the Spartan South Midlands League Division 1 to the Combined Counties League Division one, with Hilltop (based in Ealing) and London Samurai (based in Acton) being promoted from the Middlesex County League Premier Division. Buckhurst Hill have been promoted from the Essex Olympian League to the Eastern Counties League Division One East. Biggleswade United have gone from the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division to the United Counties League Premier Division South, whilst Letchworth Garden City Eagles have been promoted to the Spartan South Midlands Division One. Finally, Cockfosters and Hadley, formerly of the Essex Senior League, will now be back in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division.

A-Z OF FORMER
Emmanuel Omoyinmi Omoyinmi joined The Hammers as a successful youth product from Tony Carr’s Academy in May 1995. He was unable to gain a regular place in the first team, making only 13 league and cup appearances in five years, of which eleven were as substitute, scoring two goals. Both goals came in a 3–3 draw with Palace in May 1998. He had several spells on loan between 1996 and 1999 at Bournemouth, Dundee United, Orient and Gillingham as he continued to struggle to find a permanent home in English Football. After returning to West Ham, he appeared as a substitute in a quarter final round of the Worthington Cup against Villa. As he had played for a different club in an earlier round of the competition, he was ineligible to play, and the Football League recognised the club made a genuine administrative mistake. The match was replayed and West Ham, who had won the first game, lost the replay, and were eliminated from the competition. The Football League ruling also led to the West Ham Company Secretary, Graham Mackrell resigning just after six months at the club and further led to Hammers Football Secretary leaving her post as well. Immediately, just five days after the first match against Aston Villa, Omoyimni went on loan to Scunthorpe for three months as the controversial man still ended playing in claret and blue. He then came to Underhill for the rest of the season before leaving West Ham for good a few months later. Omoyinmi joined Oxford on a free transfer in June 2000. He made 77 league and cup appearances for Oxford in four years, scoring nine goals. He also had loan spells in the lower leagues of the English football pyramid during the 2003–04 season at Margate, and at Gravesend and Northfleet. Omoyinmi joined Gravesend & Northfleet on a permanent basis in May 2004, making 35 appearances and scoring six goals. He later played for Lewes and Worthing. Emmanuel started in the Premier League and finished in the Isthmian League, its safe to say it did not go to plan for the Nigerian forward in English football.

Match Report 2 BARNET FC
THE BEES LOOKED TO START BRIGHTLY IN FRONT OF THE BEE ARMY AND HAD THE BETTER OF THE EARLY EXCHANGES, WITH HARRY TAYLOR HAVING OUR BEST CHANCE ON THREE MINUTES AS HE HEADED EPHRON MASON-CLARK’S CROSS JUST WIDE.
HOW IT HAPPENED The team traded corners, before the Bees went close again after Themis Kefalas met an Anthony Wordsworth corner, but his header dropped wide of the upright. The Magpies had an opening of their own on 20 minutes, but Adam Parkes was equal to the strike from Daniel Orsi. Despite the Bees continuing to run the game, it became a pretty scrappy affair towards the back end of the half and despite the best efforts of Mason-Clark, the teams headed into the break level on a chilly spring evening in North London. Simon Bassey’s Bees came flying out the traps for the second half and got their reward just 12 minutes into the second half, as Harry Taylor netted his first ever Barnet goal on his 151st appearance. The Bees academy graduate picked the ball up on the edge of the box before finding the space to lash an effort into the back of the net. It couldn’t have been a more fitting moment on a night where fans returned to The Hive London. It only took eight minutes for the Bees to a second goal
0 MAIDENHEAD UNITED FC
and what a goal it was, Sam Skeffington delightfully turned in the centre of the pitch, before finding Tomi Adeloye who held up brilliantly, he played in Wordsworth who made no mistake with a sweeping finish from ten yards out. The buoyant Bees continued to pile on the pressure and only a double save denied the Bees from a third, as first Wordsworth sent a stinging effort goalwards, before Mason-Clark saw an effort saved by the ‘keepers legs. The fans were simply superb as the game went on and barring a couple of Maidenhead corners, it was mostly one way traffic in the second forty-five. There was almost gloss added to the evening after good work from Mason-Clark found Michael Petrasso with the goal at his mercy, but his diving header went agonisingly past the post. All in all, it was the perfect night to welcome the Bee Army back to The Hive London and it was a richly deserved three points for the Bees, who took the acclaim of the fans at the end of the match.
Barnet FC Team: Parkes, Vaughan, Richards-Everton, Nugent, Beard, Skeffington (McBurnie 82’), Wordsworth (Petrasso 72’), Mason-Clark, Kefalas, Taylor, Adeloye (Walker 72’). Unused subs: Subs not used: Callan, Vasiliou.
