WRITES
Darren Currie
Good evening and welcome back to The Hive London for our National League fixture against FC Halifax Town. I’d like to extend that welcome to Jamie Fullarton, his staff, officials and supporters. Tonight is an opportunity to correct the performance at Halifax just one week ago. We were very disappointing on the night, we lacked effort, we lacked energy and we lacked pride. We can correct those wrongs tonight. A big thank you to all the supporters that made the trips to both Halifax and Gateshead in the past week. It’s so frustrating for me that you never saw your team win on either occasion. I cannot speak highly enough of your effort and commitment to get behind the team. It certainly doesn’t go unnoticed and I truly, truly appreciate it. It was a very convincing performance the last time we were at The Hive. We came through a little nervy period towards the
end but to get three goals and pick up the three points at home with lots of people clapping at the end and going home happy, that’s what I’m wanting to achieve on a more consistent basis. I want people enjoying our football and I want us to be picking up three points.
It goes without saying that if we work hard, we stand a much better chance. Enjoy the match, #LetsBeeTogether
Darren

SKIPPER’S
NOTES
Hello everybody and a warm welcome back to The Hive as we take on FC Halifax Town this evening. Another meeting against Halifax tonight, so soon after playing them last Tuesday which is certainly unique. We have to try and put things right after last weeks game against them. It’s a whole new game with another three points up for grabs that we’re desperate to get.
Sometimes it just takes a scrappy 1-0 win to turn things around. We’re two games a week at the minute and we have a lot of games coming that we want to pick up points in.
We’re going to try our best to go and get as many points on the board.
Our last home game was a good win with three goals which was encouraging, hopefully, we can recreate some of that form tonight. I know that Darren has been saying after the games that we have not been playing bad, we’ve just not been getting the results.
Come on you Bees!

FC HALIFAX TOWN CLUB HISTORY Following the demise of Halifax Town AFC at the end of the 20072008 season, a new Club was born and re-formed just in time for the 2008-2009 season. The new Football Club was placed in Level Four of the Non-League pyramid, taking a place in the Northern Premier League, in Unibond North One and called FC Halifax Town. Time was short and the new Club was faced with appointing a new Manager and bringing a team together from scratch in only five weeks. Jim Vince, a coach in the Crewe Alexandra Football Academy working closely with Crewe Manager Dario Grady and a former Manager of Witton Albion in the Unibond Premier Division, achieving two consecutive second places in the previous two seasons, was appointed. Pre –season friendlies were hastily arranged and the first ever game by the Club was played at Tamworth, when 22 trialists made appearances
for the Club, trying to catch the eye of the new Manager. The first ever official game for FC Halifax Town was a home game against Bamber Bridge at the Shay Stadium. For the Halifax fans, it was an emotionally charged game; as they were so relieved to see their beloved ‘Shaymen’ play a real game of football again, after all the heartache of previous. Over 1,500 fans attended the game, watching a team that barely knew one another. Perhaps with a possible sign of things to come, the Club went in at halftime 0-0, but ended up losing the game 3-0. Not the best of starts! Disappointingly, the team had a mediocre first season and for whatever reason, Jim Vince struggled to get things going with any real conviction on the pitch, culminating in a far from satisfactory 8th place, even missing out on a Play-Off place. A new Club and striving for stability and continuity, reluctantly the Board BARNETFC.COM 11
had to make a change, with Jim Vince leaving the position prior to the end of the season and player, Nigel Jemson taking the club though to the end of the season. Players who have gone on to play at a higher level include from that season include, Junior Brown in League Two at Fleetwood Town, Colin Daniel a loanee who is now playing in League Two also with Mansfield Town and Gavin Rothery at Guiseley. An early appointment was made for the 2009-2010 season, with Neil Aspin joining from Conference North side, Harrogate Town. Despite dropping two divisions he was confident of a bright future for the Football Club and was ready for the challenge of moving the club further up the pyramid. A mixture of new recruits, players known to him and some already involved with the Club from the previous season, he set about trying to establish a successful team.
OPPOSITION
A mixture of new recruits, players known to him and some already involved with the Club from the previous season, he set about trying to establish a successful team. As we all know, achieving promotion from any division is a huge challenge and the early pace setters were Lancaster City, scoring goals for fun with striker Jordan Connerton hitting a rich vein of form, gaining him a move to Crewe Alexandra and seemingly winning games, no matter what. At one stage in to the second half of the season, they held a twelve point lead over the Shaymen, although Halifax had lost a lot of games through postponement due to the weather. Fighting their way through the backlog, the ultimate period in the second season and the moment at which Halifax moved in to pole position in the league, was an eventful three match period spread over six days, in the final third of the season. Garforth away on a Thursday night, two minutes to go the Shaymen losing 3-1. A goal for the Shaymen, 3-2. The referee announces four extra minutes and in the 91st minute another goal, 3-3. Everyone was delighted, equalising so late and hopefully securing an unlikely point out from the game. What drama was to follow, with the last kick of the game Richard Marshall thirty yards away from goal, produced an exquisite lob to beat the keeper for a 4-3 win. Despite Lancaster winning on the same night, they were told the Shaymen had lost, so what a shock when they got back on their coach, only to find Halifax had won so late in the game. A real night of drama! Our next home game on the Saturday? You guessed, Lancaster City at home at the Shay Stadium. In front of over three thousand fans, the afternoon was electric and Halifax won the game comfortably, 4 nil and taking over the leadership of the division. The following Monday evening was a tough away game at Curzon Ashton
who were also in the play-off places and Halifax recorded a stunning 5 nil away win. From then on, momentum carried the team to its first promotion as Champions, with 100 points and over 100 goals. A step up to the newly sponsored EvoStik Premier division. With some more astute signings and the average age of the team being reduced, Halifax tried to emulate the previous season. Again, the Club achieved promotion and the Championship, with five games to spare, missing the 100 points by just two and again scoring over 100 goals. As in the previous season, the Club just missed out on the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup, losing to Wrexham in 2009-10 to a 97th pile-driver and 2010-11, to a 1 nil defeat against Mansfield Town. A nice recognition for the Club was goalkeeper Jonathan Hedge being called in to the England ‘C’ squad as he had also been chosen in the previous season. The only blot on a wonderful season was the emotional loss of Neil’s assistant Trevor Storton, who sadly died after a long battle with cancer. He was with the team nearly all the way, passing away just before our promotion was secured. Promotion was a fitting tribute to a wonderful man. So, 2011-2012 saw the arrival in the Football Conference and the Blue Square Bet North division. Another tough challenge, made all the harder with the departure of star striker Jamie Vardy, after only four games of the new season. Jamie making a move to then Conference Premier, Fleetwood Town and soon to be Champions, making their way in to the Football League for the first time in their history. Jamie shortly made a second move to Championship Club, Leicester City becoming the first £1m non-league player. Despite that set-back on the pitch, the Shaymen battled their way to a play-off position, to meet Gainsborough Trinity. In the away first leg, a disastrous start being two nil BARNETFC.COM 12
down in the first twenty minutes and seeing very little of the ball. Two Lee Gregory goals, one just before half time and one midway through the second half brought the Shaymen back in to the tie for the second leg. In front of over three thousand fans in the second leg, Town could not turn their superiority in to goals and lost to a set piece, one nil. The season was also highlighted by finally achieving the FA Cup First Round Proper and what a draw. League One leaders Charlton Athletic who were to go up as Champions and the game also being chosen for national live TV broadcast. Managing to stay in the game one nil until the 80th minute was very creditable, but once Danny Lowe was harshly sent-off, the team eventually lost 4 nil. Nevertheless, what a great day and profile for the Club. Understanding the league a little more, Neil Aspin brought in one or two fresh faces for the 2012-2013 campaign and said ‘goodbye’ to some good players, who had helped the Club progress so much. This season in particular was the hardest for the Club since reformation, only due to the number of match cancellations, both home and away for a variety of reasons, but mainly the incredible amount of rain. The fixture backlog and numerous rearrangements took their toll and Halifax would have to do well, playing so many games a week to secure a play-off spot. This they did in fifth place and faced a local derby against Guiseley in the semis, who were in the play-offs for the third consecutive season. Chester FC had walked away with the Championship. After a 1 all draw at the Shay Stadium, Halifax managed a two nil deserved win away at Nethermoor, with Gregory and Johnson getting the goals.
OPPOSITION
So to the Final and a long trip to Brackley, who in their first season has done tremendously well and it was going to be a difficult tie. In a tight game perhaps dominated by the Shaymen, Lee Gregory scored the only goal of the game to send the fans in to raptures and earn a place in the Conference Premier division, for the first time in their history. A great achievement in five years with three promotions, but everyone involved with the Club knows this will be a tough campaign and despite that, everyone is up for the challenge and look forward to welcoming everyone to Halifax and the Shay Stadium.
Gareth McClelland, Darren Kelly and Jim Harvey all had spells in charge during the 2015/16 season. The season was to be one of mixed emotions as Town were relegated from the National League. A terrible start to the season was then met by a revival under Harvey but the damage was already done. Despite the relegation, The Shaymen made it to Wembley for the first time in their history. FC Halifax Town beat Nantwich Town 6-4 on aggregate to reach the final of the FA Trophy. Grimsby Town were the opponents that day and a early second half goal from Scott McManus was enough to give the Town fans their dream day out in the capital as The Shaymen lifted the FA Trophy.
The following season FC Halifax Town finished 5th in the Skrill Premier and the play-offs beckoned again, this time with the chance of a Wembley final and promotion to the Football League. However despite a 1-0 home win over Cambridge United at the Shay, a 2-0 defeat at the Abbey Stadium saw Cambridge head to Wembley.
The 2016/17 season saw another manager in charge as Billy Heath took over the coaching duties and was able to guide Town straight back to the National League. Town had finished 3rd in the National League North and were promoted after winning the playoff final against Chorley. Heath’s second season in charge did not get off to a good start as Town languished near the bottom of the league. Eventually, the decision was made to part ways with Billy Heath and Neil Young was given the role of caretaker manager until FC Halifax Town’s current manager, Jamie Fullarton, was instated on a permanent basis. Fullarton managed to save The Shaymen from relegation in 2017/18 as they ended up finishing 16th. This season, FC Halifax Town have gotten off to a flying start and only time will tell if they can finally get back to the Football League.
Last season, Town had a great start to the season and got to the quarter finals of the FA Trophy. However after defeat to Wrexham in the quarter finals, the season petered out and Town finished in mid table. Neil Aspin promised a number of changes over the summer, which he has duly promised. However, just a few games into the season, Aspin departed the Club having been in charge for over 300 games. Aspin’s departure would kickstart the managerial merry-go-round that was to come in the next few years.

JAMIE FULLARTON MANAGER
a former Scottish professional football player who now manages National League club FC Halifax Town. Fullarton played for several clubs in Scotland, France and England, including St Mirren, Bastia, Crystal Palace, Bolton Wanderers, Dundee United, Brentford and Southend United. He was briefly the manager of Notts County in 2016, but was sacked after 12 games in charge.
PLAYING CAREER Fullarton won 18 Scotland under-21 caps, captaining the side at the 1996 under-21 European Championship, where they reached the semi-finals. He spent the first six years of his career with St Mirren before moving to French side SC Bastia in 1996. After a year with Les Bleus, he moved to Crystal Palace, where he managed nearly 80 appearances in three years. At Palace he scored once; his goal coming in a 1–1 Premier League draw with Coventry City on 24 September 1997. After a short loan spell with Bolton Wanderers, Fullarton moved back to Scotland with Dundee United, although injury restricted him to only 20 appearances during his two years at Tannadice. It was at United in November 2000 that he received a serious injury, where a dislocation and double break of the ankle resulted in nearly ten minutes of on-field treatment. The injury was so severe that Fullarton was close to having his foot amputated. After his release from United, Fullarton made 37 appearances for Brentford where he scored on his debut against Huddersfield Town. He then moved to Southend United where after 17 appearances he suffered a serious knee injury at Chesterfield which required total reconstruction. He retired in 2005 after an attempted comeback in Singapore with Woodlands Wellington, failed.
COACHING CAREER Fullarton moved to Spain where he set up his own football academy, running teams from under-8 to under-19, playing against Spanish lower league professional club’s academies. Seven years on the academy is still running with over 200 players in the system and a number having graduated to sign for professional clubs in both Spain and England. In July 2011, Fullarton took over as Youth Team Coach at Bristol Rovers. However, in the summer of 2012, he became the coach of the Bolton Wanderers under-21s from where he was released by mutual consent in October 2014, following the departure of manager, Dougie Freedman. Fullarton still oversees his football academy, Costa Unida, in Spain.
MANAGEMENT CAREER On 10 January 2016, he was unveiled as manager of League Two club Notts County. Fullarton was dismissed by Notts County on 19 March 2016, following a 4–1 home defeat to Exeter City. On 20 February 2018, Fullarton was announced as the new manager of F.C. Halifax Town.following the departure of Billy Heath. John Pickering was the sole ever-present player but top scorer Bill Atkins, Andy Burgin, Jeff Lee, Lammie Robertson and Bob Wallace missed just 17 matches between them.

1973/74 Terry Shanahan was leading marksman as Halifax Town finished ninth in the Third Division in 1973/74. George Mulhall's side started with a 0-0 draw at home to eventual champions Oldham Athletic, then drew 1-1 at promotion winners York City. John Wilkie scored twice to secure a 2-1 win at home to Charlton Athletic, while Dave Gwyther netted seven goals in eight games and a hat-trick in a 6-1 FA Cup first round victory over Frickley. They held leaders Bristol Rovers to a 0-0 draw in January and lost just one of their last 14 matches, drawing 1-1 in both games against Blackburn. David Pugh was sole ever-present player.
1979/80 Halifax Town reached the FA Cup fourth round for the first time in 11 years in 1979/80. They lost just two of their opening 11 Fourth Division matches, drawing 1-1 at home to Doncaster watched by 20,501. In the FA Cup, Halifax defeated Scarborough 2-0 and Walsall 2-0 before earning national headlines when Paul Hendrie's strike clinched a 1-0 third round victory over Manchester City at The Shay. They lost 2-0 at Bolton in the fourth round. Future Republic of Ireland international Mick Kennedy was ever-present, while other favourites included top scorer Franny Firth, Peter Burke, Geoff Hutt, David Evans and John Kilner.
1997/98 Geoff Horsfield was leading marksman with 30 goals as Halifax Town stormed to the Conference title in 1997/98. George Mulhall's side raced to the top of the table, unbeaten in their opening 12 Conference matches, with Horsfield grabbing a hat-trick in a 6-1 demolition of Telford. They overcame a 4-0 defeat at Cheltenham to lose just one of their next 13 Conference games, with Horsfield netting another hat-trick against Hereford. The Shaymen lost 4-0 at rivals Rushden & Diamonds, watched by 3,675, but won the title by a nine-point margin. Stars included Brian Kilcline, player-coach Kieran O'Regan and Mark Bradshaw.

1998/99 Halifax Town made an impressive return to the Football League in 1998/99. They began life back in the Third Division after a five year absence with a 2-0 victory at Peterborough and Geoff Horsfield scored seven goals in ten games before his record £350,000 move to Fulham in October. Halifax won their next match 4-0 at Scunthorpe, then four successive games to go top of the table with a 1-0 victory at Brighton in November. But they were unable to maintain their promotion challenge, failing to win any of their next seven games. Jamie Paterson was leading marksman as the Shaymen finished tenth in the Third Division.
2005/06 Chris Wilder guided Halifax Town to the Conference play-off final in 2005/06. The Shaymen started with a 1-0 defeat at Morecambe but gradually climbed the table, winning 4-0 at home to Tamworth and successive games against Kidderminster, Hereford and Altrincham. They took Rushden & Diamonds to an FA Cup first round replay before losing on penalties and just two defeats in 17 Conference games lifted them to third place by the end of March. John Grant was leading marksman as Halifax qualified for the play-offs in fourth place, beating Grays Athletic 5-4 on aggregate before losing 3-2 to Hereford United in the final.

ALEX JONES
ALEX JONES DIGRESSES SHAY’S NOT THERE Neither was I a week ago for the corresponding fixture, reversed so quickly because of the cup congestion. I always liked the ground, which, to me at any rate, showed that it was a multipurpose sports venue, with the same problems that have befallen Dave Parade, Newport in recent years. One of the best pubs in Calderdale is the Shears Inn, which I’m pleased to observe is still trading and I wish I could find a photo from one particular game. Barry Fry had been sacked for a sixty-third time, so he joined us on the terraces. Amongst the fans Mrs Ann Percy, her super dad Ken, and the late Frank Judge. The latter two are fondly remembered.
the charming art deco design, it must be a different world for residents of Edgware of a certain age. Stevenage have never done me any harm, and Boreham Wood should have blue plaques celebrating the home of several of my best students. So for Barnet rivalries depend on the defendant’s age. As a teenager, I was acutely aware that Swansea and Cardiff disliked each other - “hate” is too cordial a word, but Mr Moonchild Bee, who was educated in the city saw trouble. The late Rev Vernon Davies, my lecturer at University, told us and his first wife a story of going to the Merseyside derby. When trying to explain that he was there as neutral, the reaction was that Vern must be an atheist. I must explain at this juncture, that Vernon was a happily married man, but Mari was always introduced with that prerequisite. He was a funny man and he knew it. Anyway, follow the link and contribute, I’m sure Joyce will be grateful. Another story which I told on the thread refers to one of several North London derbies which I attended. The sad news of the passing of David Rocastle was rightly commemorated by a minute’s silence. The Tottenham fans observed it impeccably. Sometimes people lose perspective, not that lunchtime.
WALKING IN MEMPHIS
Club Rivalries Recently, beesjoyce posted a link on the only Barnet site. I remain a Luddite, so go to that site, and search for the thread and the appropriate surveymonkeylink. In my time, I have only attended one competitive fixture between Barnet and Enfield, the 4-1 victory in the FA Cup in December 1991, where Spike Carter’s hat trick emphasized the gulf between the two sides, a chasm which only widened with the subsequent Enfield schism and the sail of the ground. Have been to the Domkeydome on a few occasions, and with

So well done Sid Tobias, Paul Johncock Bob Fisher, Mike Moate, Stephen Kent, Bill Charge, and Brian Chandler and good luck for the rest of the season.

helped fashion the Half Man Half Biscuit song “Bob Wilson Anchor-man”. Anyway, one item of news which probably wasn’t covered was the news that Colwyn Bay have voted to join the Welsh Pyramid. I’m
sure they will be accepted, but at what level remains to be seen. Yes there will be less travelling, but Bangor City, historically a bigger club, also have financial problems which led to enforced relegation from the Welsh premier last year, when they were denied the correct license. Another, the more publicised story, is Brendan Rodgers’ sudden move southwards. Celtic fans have responded with a mixture of incredulity and downright abuse but they should always be grateful to the most successful manager in their history since the former Llanelli star Jock Stein. I was stood opposite Jock at Ninian Park the evening of his sad passing. As I said earlier, it’s important not to lose one’s perspective. It’s only a game.

MATCH REPORT
Barnet returned to winning ways after beating Barrow 3-1 at The Hive London on Saturday afternoon. Goals from Elliott Johnson, Shaq Coulthirst and an own goal sealed the victory despite Kyle Jameson pulling one back late on.
a delightful cross which was headed into the side-netting by Coulthirst. The Barnet number 10 then saw his effort from distance deflect out for a corner, proving to be the final chance of a brilliant first half for the Bees.
The Bees made three changes from the side who lost to Chesterfield in mid-week; Cheye Alexander, Andre Boucaud and Jack Barham coming in for Simeon Akinola, Harry Taylor and Ashley Charles. Barrow also made a triple switch to their starting line-up after their 0-0 draw with Ebbsfleet last time out as Connor Brown, Jacob Blyth and Kyle Jennings all received the nod.
Barnet began the second period just how they ended the first, on the front foot. Coulthirst did well to deliver a dangerous cross, missing the head of Barham before Alexander was there to pick it up, shooting into the hands of Dixon.
Darren Currie’s side took the lead with only four minutes on the clock after a dangerous cross found Johnson at the far post and the full-back poked home from close range.
Barnet were at it again when Elito pulled the trigger from distance, forcing a strong diving save from Dixon to tip the ball over.
After a quiet spell, the Bees then had a chance to double their lead 14 minutes later after Medy Elito played in a dangerous ball to Barham whose effort from close range rolled past the post.
The Bees did eventually have their second on the hour mark when a ball was played through to Coulthirst by Barham who buried it into the bottom left corner.
Moments later and Coulthirst tried to add his name on the score-sheet, firing from just inside the box but his shot was comfortable enough for Joel Dixon to catch.
The forward latched onto another ball soon after before he was appeared to be brought down. However, the referee waved all penalty claims away.
The Bees had another chance with just over five minutes left of the first period as Wes Fonguck fired in a low cross which was dragged wide by Barham.
It didn’t matter though as the Bees did have their third moments later when Fonguck’s cross was turned into the back of his own net by Dan Jones.
Up the other end and Barrow had an opportunity to equalise after Dior Angus cut inside before blasting just over Mark Cousins’ goal.
After two great saves from Cousins, the second resulting corner fell to Jameson who was on hand to tap home from close range.
Prior to the three minutes of added time, Barnet produced more attacking threat ending in Andre Boucaud floating in
Despite late pressure from the visitors, the Bees managed to hold on and claim three very important points.

TAKING THE
TAKING THE MIC
GOODBYE TO YOU, MY TRUSTED FRIEND I have always been susceptible to merciless plugs, patiently waiting for the right moment of opportunity to arrive. Once a year, every year, I have cajoled Sight and Sound Control to play “I Want an Alien for Christmas” in the hope that it will entice Hive listeners to discover more of power-poppers Fountains of Wayne. And not just “Stacy’s Mom.”
I will give you time to think about it, revealing some of my own personal favourites in my next column. Here, I’ll delve into some of my favourite venues from the past; places that are no longer with us other than by memory.
Assorted YouTube videos have also received mention on this page, and I have subtly slipped a few references to Joy Division into this column. Go and investigate them. It will change your life.
I have been fortunate to be a (now lapsed) member of The 92 Club, having seen games at all 92 Premier League and EFL stadia, and also to have visited all 42 Scottish League grounds. While the bigger venues may frequently offer better comfort and the “Wall of Sound” experience that you would expect from a large-scale, I have generally preferred the personal touch and idiosyncrasies of settings at the other end of the scale. Give me points of difference over “cookie cutter” architecture any day.
My latest mission is to blatantly plug a forthcoming book by Mike Bayly. The title says it all: “100 British Football Grounds to Visit Before You Die”. Which immediately raises the question: How do you choose them – and, indeed, set the criteria for that judgment? In fairness, Mike hasn’t, and has instead left it up to the Great British public to vote with their groundhopping feet.
Of those that are gone, Underhill will always hold a special place in my heart, but who else features? Rushden and Diamonds’ Nene Park was one of the best of the new grounds in terms of character and personality. Alas, like the original club it housed, it is now flattened.
All will be revealed when his book hits the shelves, but in the interim we can make do with: Which grounds would YOU choose?

TAKING THE MIC
Also gone is Darlington’s Feethams. A League outpost at the best of times, I chiefly remember it for the walk you had to make all the way around a cricket pitch in order to get to the football ground. A similar layout exists at Southern League Barwell, where I once ran into Steve and Ann Percy, who were on their own mid-week groundhop, but that is another story for another time.
“industrial” at best, so maybe it was its higgledypiggledy nature that attracted me. Or maybe the fact that it once housed a Speedway track. My biggest regret in terms of grounds I never managed to get to for a game, having to make do with a few strained photos through locked gates and over three foot high grass not long before it was demolished, was East Stirling’s Firs Park. To re-live its inner soul, check out Jeff Connor’s wonderful book “Pointless”, which I will always plug at every opportunity.
Shrewsbury’s Gay Meadow reminds me of a number of venues of its era. Its compatriots have also pretty much vanished, with York City’s Bootham Crescent one of the last survivors – and that will disappear at the end of this season. Bootham doesn’t back onto the River Severn, though; a feature that added to the Gay Meadow’s backdrop and also necessitated the use of a coracle to collect balls lost through errant shots and clearances.
Most peculiar amongst its features was the concrete wall that sat immediately – and I mean IMMEDIATELY – behind one goal as a stadium perimeter. I pity any player whose irresistible force took him into that immovable barrier. 20 feet high, the wall was monolithic, perhaps teasing a Brave New World that beckoned The Shire on the other side. Or was it just the Land of Leather shop in the adjacent retail park?
I always had a soft spot for Newport County’s Somerton Park. Most would consider it
Either way, we will never know. Firs Park and The Wall have both disappeared. And East Stirling are now tenants of Falkirk and plying their trade in the Lowland League. A case of Shadowplay? Merciless plug.

Gary Johnson, the manager of National League South side Torquay United, has criticised the National League after postponing his sides’ game just over an hour and a half before kick off. His side were due to welcome Chelmsford City to Plainmoor last Tuesday night, however only match officials are allowed to call off matches. No referees were found to inspect the pitch, which had been waterlogged after heavy rain, meaning the game was only called off at 18.10. “The authorities have to rethink how they cancel games” Johnson said. “They’ve got to trust the club. It was irresponsible that we weren’t allowed to make a decision”. “The reason why we had to make the decision before 11:00 is that we had to stop Chelmsford and their supporters coming up. We tried our best, we rang 12, 13, 14 referees, none of them were available. We couldn’t get anyone down”. The City squad had already made the 250 mile, 4½ hour trip to Devon.

Swindon Town have agreed a deal with Swindon Borough Council to buy their County Ground stadium for £2.2 million. The deal still needs ratification at the councils’ cabinet meeting on 20th March, but it is expected to be approved. The stadium will be brought jointly between the club and its’ Supporters Trust, who are launching a community fundraising campaign in order to raise their half of the cash, and selling shares. “This can be a catalyst for great things” said the Swindon Town Supporters’ Trust chair Steve Mytton.”It’s a massive, massive day. People might not understand that yet, but we’ve got control of our destiny. We can develop the stadium and really build a new future for the football club”.
PADRAIG AMOND
“I have dreamed of this” said Newport County striker Padraig Amond, who was last week called up to the Republic of Ireland national team for the first time. “I was surprised to be called up, I knew there had been a bit of chat about it, but you don’t fully expect or believe it will actually happen”. Born in Carlow, the now 30 year olds only previous taste of international football came in 2008, when he made four under 21 appearances. The striker has scored 21 goals this season, including at least 1 in every one he has appeared in this seasons FA Cup. He was called up by manager Mick McCarthy to face Gibraltar away on 23rd March and Georgia at home on 26th March, both in Euro 2020 qualifiers.

The EFL have given Coventry City extra time to finalise their plans about remaining at their Ricoh Arena stadium. The club are currently in a legal dispute with several parties, notably Rugby Premiership club Wasps, the Ricoh’s owners, and Coventry City Council. The EFL and City have said they will not negotiate the clubs position whilst that dispute was ongoing. The EFL have stated that if this is not resolved by 2nd April, then all Football League clubs will be notified about a meeting, set to take place on 25th April, to decide Coventry’s future, with the potential for them to be expelled from the league.
DIMITAR EVTIMOV
After an incident during a game last Tuesday night, Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman publicly stated that his goalkeeper Dimitar Evtimov’s action of throwing a bottle into the crowd was “unacceptable”. The club hosted Blackpool at the Crown Ground in the League 1 tie, with the visitors taking the lead within the first five minutes of the game. Stanley equalised 20 minutes later, but conceded a penalty 10 minutes before the end of the game, which was subsequently scored. The former Bulgaria U21 international badly reacted to conceding the goal, and as a result threw a bottle into the stands in anger, picking up a red card. “Dimi knows he was wrong and he was wrong in what he did” said Coleman. “We’ve got to take responsibility for our own actions. I’ve faced this - we get abused nearly every time we go away from home by opposing fans and sometimes you want to turn around and have a go back at them”.
Former Reading, Yeovil Town and Dunfermline Athletic forward Gozie Ugwu has had his loan at Boreham Wood ended and has now been sent on loan to Ebbsfleet United. Signing for Chesterfield in 2017, former manager Martin Allen claimed that he would “score a lot of goals”, but after he had made 7 appearances for the Spireites at the beginning of the season, not scoring, he was sent on loan to the Wood, where he was due to remain until the end of the season. “Boreham Wood sent him back but he’s gone to Ebbsfleet until the end of the season. “Someone threw it at me quickly, I didn’t have a clue he was coming back. I think it was all done in the space of 24 hours” said manager John Sheridan. “I know Gozie, I had him at Plymouth. The circumstances why he was sent back I don’t really know, I just felt it wasn’t really worth me bringing him back with what we’ve got, how many people I’ve got. Luckily I think for Gozie and us, Ebbsfleet were straight on the phone as soon as they found out he was available”. Ugwu had previously scored 4 goals in 10 games during the 2011/12 season.

Colwyn Bay have announced that they will be returning to the Welsh football system for the first time in 35 years. The side currently play in the Northern Premier League Division One West, the eighth tier of English football, having previously been as high as the National League North. following a meeting last Thursday, the club’s shareholders voted in favour of a return to the Welsh leagues for the first time since 1984. This comes after the club having faced financial difficulties in recent years. “My main concern was that the club survived and the only way that was going to happen was by going into the Welsh system,” said chairman Bill Murray. “If we stay in England we won’t survive as a club. The immediate task is to focus on seeing out the remainder of the season, and then work starts in earnest on formulating a plan to take the club forward”.

Gateshead, our opponents last weekend, were put up for sale last Friday by owner and chairman Dr Ranjan Varghese for just £1, after having met with the clubs’ Supporters Association. Varghese will continue to own the club until 31 May, and will have the condition that he is reimbursed a £200,000 bond lodged with the National League. He took over the Tyneside club fairly recently, in July 2018, but financial issues in that short period has seen the club pick up a transfer embargo. The side clubs supporters had planned a protest for Saturday’s game with us, but as of time of writing, it is unclear whether or not this will go ahead after the sale. “I’d like to thank Ranjan and Joe (Cala - advisor) for working with us as fans to look at a way to resolve matters off the pitch and show the same unity that we have shown on the pitch throughout the season”, Gateshead Soul fans group chairman Bernard McWilliams said. “I’m looking forward to working with the club and finding prospective buyers that will take us on to next season”.
The EFL board has reportedly rejected an offer by Charlton Athletic owner Roland Duchatelet for the league to acquire the club, despite Duchatelet offering to sell it to them for a nominal fee of just £1, with their reason being that it would be “a significant conflict of interest”. However, if the Belgian millionaire got his way, he would still retain his ownership of clubs’ Valley stadium as well as their training ground. The clubs’ supporters had previously rejected the proposals at last months’ fans forum. The south London side have officially been up for sale since late 2017, with Duchatelet having been in charge since 2014. Duchatelet has previously owned Belgian sides Standard Liege, which he sold in 2015, and Sint Truidense, which he sold in 2017. He currently also owns German side Carl Zeiss Jena, Spanish side Alcorcon, and Hungarian club Újpest. An EFL statement says: “As a competition organiser, the EFL regulates against dual interests and, having assessed the suggestion to take control of Charlton Athletic put forward by the club’s owner Roland Duchatelet, the EFL Board has concluded that such an arrangement would raise a significant conflict of interest and as such is not one that could be considered”.

HALIFAX AWAY POSTCARD Thankfully I have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off uni so I was able to get the train back home to Leeds on Tuesday morning for the Halifax game. This meant I had the afternoon to eat pancakes before me and my family (including my cousin who I was able to recruit as a bee for the day!) set off at about 6pm to head to Halifax – the game right on our doorstep! It’s a nice short drive for us and we were in the small away end by 7pm. I knew I was back in the North when I was served a lovely tray of chips and gravy from the tea hut which I ate as I watched the warm ups. The away end started filling up as we got nearer kick off and the teams came out ready to go. The game had quite a slow start with the first big moment on 17 minutes when I was so sure that Halifax had scored a goal! Apparently, the ball just went round the wrong side of the post. It was one of the most confusing things I’ve seen but I was glad the score was still 0-0. Halifax continued to have the chances and they were rewarded on 36 minutes when Cousins saved their initial shot but Kosylo was able to get the follow up in. We had a few chances of our own but went into half time 1-0 down. On a cold night in Yorkshire, a hot chocolate and creme egg went down a treat at half time! Shortly into the second half, we brought Akinola on and were clearly trying to get ourselves an equaliser. However, it was Halifax who scored when James Ferry got his low shot in. Dave Tarpey was introduced into the game, but it was Halifax who scored again on 73 minutes when ex-loanee Manny Duku got his goal. On 75 minutes, there was a glimmer of hope as we were awarded a penalty when Shaq Coulthirst was brought down. However, their goalkeeper went the right way and was able to keep the penalty out. As the game finished, we pushed forward with impressive efforts from Harry Taylor and Simeon Akinola, but we were not able to score and the game finished 3-0. It was a nice touch from Darren Currie and the players to come over to thank the travelling fans. We walked back to the car that was parked minutes away from the ground and thankfully we were back home for about 10:30pm (to eat even more pancakes!). It was a disappointing performance and loss, I just hope we can do better in the reverse fixture on Tuesday.
