WRITES

Darren Currie

Good afternoon and welcome back to The Hive London for our National League fixture against Hartlepool United. I’d like to extend that welcome to Craig Hignett, his staff, officials and supporters.

can pick holes in our play but that is what everyone does, including us with them.

We’re right in the middle of three matches in a row at The Hive and we are looking to build on our draw midweek. We have got to take advantage of our home fixtures, we’ve got some difficult games coming up but from a performance point of view, I’ve been relatively pleased with how we have performed, I’m happy with how we are trying to use the ball, we’re moving up the pitch well, we just need to be more ruthless in the final third and I know I am repeating myself when I say that but it’s what we need to do to turn these performances into results.

We are certainly confident going into the game, strangley enough there is a nice buzz around the place because they are enjoying playing the way we’re playing.

This is a meeting of two of the bigger teams in this ever-improving league, from what we have watched, they have done OK of late. There’s no doubt about it, they will be a threat, they’ll look at us and see how they

But, like everybody, they’re frustrated that results have not back up our performances. Enjoy the match, #LetsBeeTogether

Darren

SKIPPER’S

NOTES

Hello everybody and welcome back to The Hive London as we prepare to face Hartlepool United this afternoon. Tuesday was a frustrating evening as it could have so easily been a deserved three points but we didn’t take our chances and they have scored with almost their only shot. All the boys are using recent results as extra motivation to get a win today. We want to give you something to cheer about but we are going to have to be right at it once again if we want to get a positive result.

one of the bigger sides in the division who will feel that their league position doesn’t reflect their stature. As always, we really appreciate your support.

We hope you can get behind us from the first minute until the last.

We picked up a good win at Hartlepool earlier in the season and are hoping to repeat that, but it won’t be easy as they are

Come on you Bees!

HARTLEPOOL UNITED CLUB HISTORY Hartlepool United Football Athletic Company was formed on 1 st June 1908 and they began playing at the Victoria Ground under the name Hartlepools United, representing the two boroughs of the town.

It was the 1940s by the time Pools started to gain some real stability in the League and under the guidance of popular boss Fred Westgarth they came close to winning promotion to the Second Division and also enjoyed some success in the cups.

The first game was friendly held against a Newcastle United XI at The Vic in September 1908 and Pools ran out 6-0 winners.

In the early 50s Pools played some high profile FA Cup games against Burnley and Chelsea, pushing the giants all the way but unfortunately losing 1-0 in both ties in front of huge crowds.

In November 2016 a German Zeppelin bomber on a mission to Teesside’s industrial area jettisoned its load on to the Victoria Ground, destroying the Main Stand. A replacement stand was built – which would then remain until the 1980s. The Club joined the Football League in 1921 having successfully won a case for election to the new Northern Section based on them successfully finishing in the top half of the North Eastern League.

Perhaps the most famous game in the Club’s history arrived in 1957 when Manchester United’s Busby Babes came to town for what turned out to be an epic FA Cup tie. Pools raced in to an unlikely 3-1 lead against the top flight outfit but the Red Devils came back to win 4-3 in what Sir Matt Busby later described as “the most exciting match I’ve ever watched”. In October 1965 a certain Brian BARNETFC.COM 11

Clough began his managerial career when he arrived as the new man in charge at The Vic after injury had ended his playing career. Taking over from Westgarth, Clough moulded together a powerful side and went on to lay the foundations for the Club’s first-ever promotion in 1967/68. Most of the 1970s were played out to the backdrop of financial troubles though there were still some memorable cup ties, including a trip to Ipswich Town in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. In 1977/78 the Club dropped the ‘S’ from their name and went to Hartlepool United for the new season. Pools came to the rescue of local rivals in Middlesbrough in 1985 when the Teessiders were faced with extinction and were locked out of their Ayresome Park home. Billy Horner organised for Boro to play their game against Port Vale immediately after Pools’ own game against Cardiff City at The Vic.

OPPOSITION

In 1989 Cyril Knowles was appointed manager and completed his first task in ensuring Pools escaped relegation before going about putting together a squad which could challenge at the other end of the table.

at The Millennium Stadium, Pools were leading 2-1 with seven minutes remaining before a controversial penalty award and red card turned the game on its head and The Owls levelled and then won the game in extra time.

Sadly, illness would mean Cyril wouldn’t be around to see his work come to full fruition but Alan Murray stepped up to lead the team to a second promotion in 1990/91 though the former manager’s role in the success was recognised with the naming of the Cyril Knowles Stand More financial problems soon kicked-in and local businessman Harold Hornsey is credited with saving the Club after stepping in with a rescue package in 1995. He stabilised the Club and then found responsible new owners in the shape of Increased Oil Recovery in 1997.

After relegation to League Two the following season, Danny Wilson was installed as boss and led the Club back to League One at the first time of asking – breaking numerous records on the way to the runners-up spot in 2006/07.

Under IOR the Club flourished, qualifying for the play-offs three seasons in a row before finally winning promotion from the bottom tier again as runners-up in 2002/03. Success kept on coming and Pools were beaten play-off semi-finalists in 2003/04 in League One before reaching the League One Play-Off Final in 2004/05, playing against Sheffield Wednesday in front of a crowd of 59,808. In an epic Final

After spending several seasons in League One, Pools were relegated again in 2012/13 and have spent several years battling in the bottom half of League Two before succumbing to a devastating last-day relegation at the end of 2016/17. The Club’s first season in the National League provided yet more drama of the unwanted kind as financial worries threatened its very existence and Pools fans – as well as those from other clubs around the country – rallied together to help save it. In April 2018, Raj Singh and Jeff Stelling completed a takeover of the Club which saw Singh become

the new Chairman with immediate effect and he went on to appoint Matthew Bates as the new permanent Manager after he helped steer the team away from relegation trouble. The start of the 2018/19 campaign was strong enough and Pools put together an unbeaten run to carry themselves in to the play-off positions during the opening months. However, a run of six straight defeats in the National League heaped pressure on Matthew Bates and a decision was taken that he should leave the Club in late November 2018. Director of Football, Craig Hignett was placed in temporary charge of First Team affairs as a result. In December, the Board made the decision to appoint Richard Money as the new Manager of the Club and he won his first game in charge with an FA Trophy triumph at Leamington. However, six weeks later the decision was taken for Money to move in to a more advisory role, paving the way for Craig Hignett to make a popular return for a second spell as Manager.

Experienced goalkeeper Scott Loach arrived at Victoria Park as Craig Harrison’s fourth summer signing in June 2017 following his release from Notts County. Loach had spent the previous two seasons on the books at Meadow Lane but gained National League experience during an impressive loan spell with York City towards the end of the 2016/17. A junior with Ipswich Town, he began his professional career at Lincoln City in 2004 and went on to build senior experience with a succession of loan moves. However, in 2006 his potential was spotted by Watford and he was nurtured through the ranks at Vicarage Road before making his Hornets debut at the start of the 2007/08 campaign.

Promising young defender Peter Kioso won a contract to Pools in the early part of July after impressing during a short trial period with the Club. The teenager is most comfortable at right-back where he gets forward to create down the flank but can also slot in anywhere across the defence. A former MK Dons trainee, Kioso had been on noncontract forms with Southern League Premier Division outfit Dunstable before being recommended to Pools boss Matthew Bates. The versatile youngster trained with the Club for a week and in that time did enough to convince the hierarchy he was worthy of a deal and won his first professional contract.

The highly-rated keeper had an outstanding debut season in Pools colours, underlinedwhen he was voted as both Players’ and Supporters’ Player of the Year for 2017/18.

Pools pulled off a fantastic bit of summer transfer business when attacking star Ryan Donaldson signed on the dotted line after his departure from Plymouth Argyle. The former Newcastle United star had made 33 appearances for the promoted Pilgrims during 2016/17 and Pools boss Craig Harrison moved quickly to acquire his services once he was freed from Home Park.

The attacking midfielder was drafted in to the First Team picture in February 2017 after impressing new boss Dave Jones when playing for the Reserves. Still a scholar, Hawkes has been on the books at Pools for three years and has made excellent progress playing for the Youth Team and Reserves since then. Blessed with a knack of arriving late in to the penalty area to score goals, he also has superb delivery from set-pieces and is dangerous with direct free-kicks. He made his senior debut as a substitute against Crewe Alexandra in February 2017 and went on to sign his first professional contract at the Club.

He became a near ever-present for them in League Two in the following campaign, scoring seven goals in total – one of them against Pools. However, now he will be looking to put the ball in the net for the Club after Pools beat off the attention of several other clubs to land his signature. His debut season was interrupted by an ankle injury which required two operations and kept him out for six months but he returned to fitness for the latter part of the campaign and will hope to play much more during 2018/19.

After going out on loan on several occasions in the early part of last term, Hawkes returned to make a big impact at The Vic scoring on his full debut against Bromley in March 2018 and finding the net again at Sutton United the following month.

Pools stumped up an undisclosed fee to Gateshead to bring giant centre-back Fraser Kerr to The Super 6 Stadium in February 2019.

Experienced midfielder Nicky Featherstone arrived as then-boss Paul Murray’s first signing in October 2014, initially signing a shortterm deal with the Club.

The 6ft 4ins defender had come through the ranks at Birmingham City before securing a switch to Motherwell in 2013 at the end of a successful loan stint at Fir Park. After making 50 appearances for Motherwell he moved on for spells at Cowdenbeath and Stenhousmuir before earning a move back to English football with Gateshead in the summer of 2018.

However, his form in the centre of the park has blossomed since then and he became an integral part of the engine room, particularly upon the arrival of Craig Hignett as Manager in February 2016. Comfortable and composed in possession, Featherstone produced some wonderful performances during the 2015/16 run-in, which helped earn him a new contract at Victoria Park.

He went on to become one of the regulars at the back for The Tynesiders as they emerged as unlikely candidates for promotion from the National League. Pools boss Craig Hignett had placed Kerr at the top of his target list for the summer but the Club decided to accelerate their move for the dominant Scot due to injury and suspension problems.

Featherstone was again among the top outfield appearance-makers last season and went on to sign a new contract with the Club during the summer.

The young winger arrived at Pools in January on loan from Sunderland for the rest of the season and he made his debut in the game at Harrogate Town. Molyneux spent the first half of 2018/19 on loan at Gateshead and played against Pools twice over the Christmas period before sealing his move to the Club. A regular in Sunderland’s Under-23s last term, he also earned a call-up to the senior squad and made his First Team debut on the final day of the campaign as The Black Cats beat Wolves 3-0. The Durham-born wide man excelled during his stint in Gateshead colours and will be hoping to show more of what he’s about at The Super 6 Stadium.

Pools completed a surprise loan move for Nicke Kabamba in January as he made a switch from Havant & Waterlooville for the rest of the season.

Popular front man Luke James clinched a permanent return to Victoria Park in July 2018 when he agreed a move following his departure from Forest Green Rovers. The livewire attacker came through the ranks at Pools having been with the Club since he was 11 and burst on to the First Team scene at the end of 2011 while he was still just 17.

The 6ft 3ins front man had been a regular for The Hawks prior to his move to the North-East but the lure of a return to full-time football proved too much for the former Portsmouth man.

That form earned him a move to Peterborough United in August 2014 though he returned to Pools for a successful loan spell during the second half of 2015/16 as form improved and the team climbed the League Two table. After a season-long loan at Bristol Rovers he joined Forest Green Rovers in the summer of 2017 but finished last term on loan at Barrow where his seven goals included one against Pools.

Kabamba made his name during a prolific spell at Hampton & Richmond and earned a move to Pompey in 2017, going on to help them to promotion from League Two. He built up further senior experience with loan spells at Colchester united and Aldershot Town last season before joining Havant during the summer.

Once it became known that a deal could be done, Pools boss Matthew Bates and Director of Football Craig Hignett moved quickly to bring James back to the North East.

The vastly-experienced centre-back was born in Ontario but returned to England at 14 when he signed for Newcastle United where he graduated from the Academy to make his senior debut on Boxing Day 2006. Having made 19 First Team appearances for The Magpies, Burnley paid ÂŁ300,000 for his services in 2009 and he made his Clarets debut in a League Cup tie against Pools.

Versatile defender Mark Kitching arrived at Pools during the summer of 2018 after being released by League One outfit Rochdale. The youngster is most comfortable at left-back but can perform a role anywhere down the left flank or even in midfield when called upon. A graduate of Middlesbrough’s highly-regarded Academy, Kitching gained experience from loan spells at York City and Rochdale before joining the latter permanently in February 2017.

Also comfortable in midfield if called upon, Edgar made over 100 appearances for Burnley before moving to Birmingham City and also playing on loan for Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United.

He played 23 games for Dale at League One level last term and it was a surprise to many when Keith Hill opted to release him but Pools moved swiftly to bring the Guisborough-born star back to the North-East.

By that time he had become a fully-fledged Canada international and returned to the country of his birth to sign for Vancouver Whitecaps in 2016 before spells with Nashville FC and more recently Ottawa Fury.

Pools moved extremely quickly to draft in highly-rated midfielder Liam Noble during the summer of 2018 following his decision to leave Notts County. A graduate of Sunderland’s much-admired Academy, Noble went on to make his name initially during a highly successful loan spell at Carlisle United which turned permanent in 2012.

After a series of false dawns, 2015/16 proved to be a real breakthrough season for talented midfield man Lewis Hawkins. The all-action star has flirted with First Team action in the past but it was last season when he finally secured a prolonged run of games in the team. After catching the eye playing for local non-league side Horden Colliery Welfare, Hawkins joined Pools at the age of 17 in 2010 and went on to make his senior debut two years later.

His form at Brunton Park earned him a move to Notts County in 2014 where he went on to become a fans’ favourite thanks to his combative style allied with a knack for creating and scoring goals, hitting double figures in 2015/16.

Positive on the ball and committed in the tackle, Hawkins was then in and out of the side over the next couple of seasons and spent time on loan with Spennymoor Town in a bid to get regular football. The Teesside-born star was rewarded for his fine form in 2015/16 when he put pen to paper on a brand new contract in April 2016 and he has been a regular component of the Pools’ engine room in the past two seasons.

A return to Meadow Lane last October saw him once again play his part in the engine room as County made it to the League Two play-offs but his desire to return closer to his North East roots paved the way for a move to Pools. Amos has come through the ranks with Rovers and made a senior debut at the tender age of just 16 when he featured against Rochdale in an EFL Trophy game in 2016.

A strong and powerful front man, Muir has been a reliable source of goals for a number of clubs on the non-league scene, including Grays Athletic, Wingate & Finchley, VCD Athletic and Leiston.

The youngster is a regular in the Northern Ireland Under-19 squad.

CRAIG HIGNETT MANAGER

Craig Hignett was appointed as the Club’s First Team Manager for the second time at the end of January following Richard Money’s switch to a more strategic role. Hignett had previously been the Club’s new Director of Football following Raj Singh’s takeover at The Super 6 Stadium and subsequently took temporary charge of First Team affairs in November following the departure of Matthew Bates prior to the appointment of Money. His return to the Club meant a fourth spell at The Vic for Hignett who has previously been with the Club as a player, Assistant Manager and Manager in the past. A talented attacker during his playing days, it was in October 1988 that Hignett first burst on to the scene when he graduated from Crewe Alexandra’s Academy to make a senior debut at the tender age of 18. His form at Gresty Road meant he soon became a key member of the team and his impressive tally of 57 goals in 150 appearances for The Railwaymen earned him a move to the Premier League with Middlesbrough in 1992. Hignett became a massive fans favourite during six years in Teesside during which he won two promotions and played in the FA Cup Final and League Cup Final in a memorable 1996/97 campaign under Bryan Robson. His reputation with Boro fans was further cemented when he wrote his name in the history books by scoring the first goal at the Riverside Stadium in their 2-0 win over Chelsea in 1995. A spell north of the border with Aberdeen was followed by an £800,000 switch to Barnsley in 1999 where he gained cult status by scoring 20 goals in his first season as The Tykes won promotion to the top flight. His record of 35 goals in 66 appearances at Oakwell was enough to convince Blackburn Rovers to shell out £2.2million for his services in 2000 and he again celebrated promotion to the Premier League with the Ewood Park outfit before also winning the League Cup in 2002. An illustrious playing career was rounded off with spells at Leicester City and Darlington before he joined Pools in 2007, making two appearances during the latter part of the League Two promotion campaign under Danny Wilson. After working as a summariser for BBC Tees, Hignett returned to the game when Colin Cooper drafted him in as his Assistant Manager at Pools in 2013 and he oversaw a successful start to the season before being tempted back to Boro to work under Aitor Karanka. After leaving the Riverside in December 2014 he once again returned to The Vic but this time as boss when he was unveiled as Ronnie Moore’s successor in February 2016. Hignett went on to spend 52 games in the hotseat at Pools, enjoying some terrific wins during that time including a memorable 5-2 triumph at Morecambe. During his time as boss Hignett signed numerous players who have gone on to make moves to a higher level, including Toto Nsiala, Lewis Alessandra and Padraig Amond.

1956/57 Hartlepools United narrowly failed to win promotion to the Second Division in 1956/57. Hartlepools kicked off with a 5-1 victory at home to Chesterfield and raced to the top of the table with just two defeats in their first 16 matches. Ace marksman Ken Johnson scored four goals in both games as they hammered Southport 6-1, then Tranmere 5-1. Long-serving manager Fred Westgarth died in February, shortly after Hartlepools had lost 4-3 at home to Manchester United in an epic FA Cup third round tie watched by a record 17,246. Hartlepools were shocked by his death and finished Third Division (North) runners-up.

1967/68 Hartlepools United won promotion for the first time in 1967/68. Gus McLean replaced Brian Clough as manager and new signings included George Smith, Alan Goad and Wilson Hepplewhite. Pools were unbeaten in their opening four games and overcame a lean spell to surge up the Fourth Division table with ten wins in 13 games, including a Christmas double over rivals Darlington. Bobby Cummings arrived in February and partnered top scorer Terry Bell as Hartlepools were undefeated in their last 16 matches and clinched promotion with a 2-0 win at Swansea. 1974/75 New manager Ken Hale plotted Hartlepool's best-ever League Cup run in 1974/75. They beat Workington 2-1 in the first round, then Bournemouth 1-0 in a second round third replay and Blackburn 2-1 in a third round replay to reach the fourth round for the first and only time. Malcolm Moore's goal clinched a 1-1 draw at home to eventual winners Aston Villa: Barry Watling, Rob Smith, Jimmy Shoulder, Malcolm Dawes, Alan Goad, George Potter, John Honour, Allan Gauden, Malcolm Moore, Frank McMahon, Mick Spelman. The highlight of the League campaign was a 5-0 win over Rochdale as they finished mid-table.

1988/89 Hartlepool United featured in the FA Cup fifth round draw for only the second time in 1988/89. They were early pace-setters in the Fourth Division with five wins in their opening six games before a barren spell led to Bobby Moncur replacing John Bird as manager in October. Hartlepool beat Wigan Athletic 2-0, Notts County 1-0 and Bristol City 1-0 in the FA Cup before drawing 1-1 at home to Bournemouth in the fourth round: Rob Moverley, Tony Barratt, Rob McKinnon, John Tinkler, Wayne Stokes, Paul Baker, Brian Honour, Andy Toman, Joe Allon, Simon Grayson, Paddy Atkinson. They were defeated 5-2 in the replay.

1990/91 Joe Allon scored 28 goals as Hartlepool United won promotion in 1990/91. Hartlepool began with a 3-2 victory at Chesterfield and John MacPhail arrived from Sunderland in September as they overcame a barren spell to soar up the Fourth Division table with six wins in seven matches. Brian Dalton grabbed a hat-trick in Hartlepool's 5-1 win at Aldershot and Alan Murray replaced the dying Cyril Knowles as manager in March. 2002/03 Hartlepool United won promotion for the third time in their history in 2002/03. They stormed to the top with just one defeat in their opening ten games, including a 4-1 victory over Darlington. Mark Tinkler netted a hat-trick and newcomer Marcus Richardson scored as Hartlepool beat Wrexham 4-3, shortly before Mike Newell replaced Chris Turner as manager in November. They remained in pole position for seven months but finished runners-up after drawing 1-1 at Rushden in a last day title decider. Eifion Williams was leading scorer, while Anthony Williams, Richie Humphreys and Chris Westwood were ever-present.

2004/05 Hartlepool United maintained their upward progress as they were League One play-off finalists in 2004/05. Early form was inconsistent and they were mid-table by December before a nine-match unbeaten run lifted them into the promotion race, slamming five goals past Wrexham and MK Dons, then taking Brentford to an FA Cup fourth round replay. Top scorer Adam Boyd netted a hat-trick in a 3-0 win at home to Sheffield Wednesday in April, then Martin Scott replaced Neale Cooper as manager just before Hartlepool drew 2-2 at Bournemouth to pip them to the last play-off place. They lost 4-2 to Sheffield Wednesday in the final.

2006/07 Hartlepool United regained League One status at the first attempt in 2006/07. They gained just two points from their opening five games under new manager Danny Wilson before results improved, winning 5-3 at Peterborough. Captain Micky Barron returned from injury, while Andy Monkhouse and Richie Barker arrived from Swindon and Mansfield respectively. Hartlepool soared to the top of the table by March after a club record 23 match unbeaten run, including a record nine successive wins. They clinched promotion with a 1-0 victory at Wycombe but were pipped to the title by Walsall on the final day of the season.

ALEX JONES

ALEX JONES DIGRESSES MONKEY MAGIC With Barnet games occurring thick and fast, I am seeking to base this article on a game played on 20th August 1994. Hartlepool played Darlington in Division Three, my first visit to Victoria Road, although John MacPhail welcomes me back. Technically he was correct as I had to purchase a ticket beforehand for the North East derby. I was staying in the area to watch Glamorgan take on Durham. Early in their County Championship career and a few years before the Riverside Stadium was built, Durham were nomadic, and their other homes included Stockton and the home of Durham University. In truth, Hartlepools ground was not really up to a four-day game, and the match finished early, giving us the chance to visit the delightful museum at Beamish.

the Post hailed the previous Derby where “an Andy Savile inspired Pool terrorised a Quakers defence”. Obviously, a lot has happened to both teams since not lest the nomadic Quakers existence. The team from Blackwell Meadows are unlikely to be experiencing either promotion or relegation this season, but will at least see this as part of their rehabilitation process, which has been long and arduous.

Football Rivalries A reminder that Bees Joyce is undertaking a project on this subject, so perhaps both sets of fans this afternoon would like to help her. If so go to the Only Barnet site, search for the Football Rivalries thread and find the appropriate survey monkey link. Recently I asked Barnet fan and oracle Steve Smith for his opinion on Brentford, whom he memorably dismissed as being guilty of “QPR envy”. Personally, I have no problem with those West London supporters, enjoyed their company at FSF meetings and will miss Griffin Park as a landmark, telling me that the M4 was meandering into London.

Hang the monkey

Darlo Double MacPhail promised “a new beginning for everyone connected with Hartlepool United”. So that would have included the starting line-up which boasted Brian Horne, Denny Ingram, Nicky Southall, Keith Houchen Paul Sweeney and Phil Gilchrist amongst others. One particularly verbose page entitled Off

Stelling when his time at Countdown was announced, the familiar jingle was played on Soccer Saturday. He is normally the consummate professional and, like Inverdale, is never phased. He is a genuine fan of the game.

I have met the monkey formerly known as Hangus at Underhill and related the legend to my lovely French friend Lilliane. The point being that the tale originates in the Napoleonic War. I would like to think that Hartlepool fans have at some time serenaded each other with Hang the Monkey, a take on the Smiths Top Ten Smash Panic.

Unbelievable Jeff Almost as famous as the ape is the knowledge that Jeff Stelling is the most famous celebrity fan. He grew rather irate onscreen the season of their relegation, after a heavy home defeat by Barnet. I prefer to think of the humorous Mr

Gateshead The Victoria Ground is one of three mammoth journeys which the Bees will have to make this season. Obviously, things did not go well in Gateshead, resulting in the normal calm rational reaction on social media. These are worrying times at present and the vast amount of rearranged matches still to plough through clearly muddy the waters still further. It will be Easter before we know it and the Cup exploits are a fading memory. The home support will lift Darren Currie and his men I am convinced.

MATCH REPORT

10-man Barnet fell to defeat in the North East, as Gateshead rallied in the second half to pick up all three points. Barnet started on the front foot and two minutes in Dan Sparkes delivered a cross into Ephron MasonClark but he had his shot blocked.

close range. Mason-Clark had a chance to double his tally when he got on the end of a Callum Reynolds cross, but his header was cleared in the goalmouth.

Steven Rigg would head Connor Thomson’s cross wide at the near post before a Barnet corner from Medy Elito was headed goalbound by Dan Sweeney but flicked over on the line by Robbie Tinkler.

Mike Williamson gave the ball away soon after the hour mark, setting Mason-Clark through two-on-one, the young winger raced at goal but could only hit the side netting.

Sparkes whipped in another cross with 13 minutes gone, he found Mason-Clark but he put his free header straight at Aynsley Pears in the Gateshead goal.

Cousins was forced into a great save in the 68th minute when Jon Mellish’s header was deflected, forcing the Barnet number 1 to shift his body weight and quickly get down low to his bottom left corner to hook the ball clear.

The Bees took a 24th-minute lead when Shaq Coulthirst played a delightful ball over the top of the Gateshead defence, setting up Mason-Clark who made no mistake, slotting past Pears from close range.

The hosts applied more pressure on the 10-man Bees and took the lead when Tom White curled home from the edge of the box in the 72nd minute.

Gateshead should have levelled shortly after, Rigg getting in behind but his first shot hit the post and his instant rebound went wide with the goal gaping.

Barnet were now the ones chasing the game, looking for an equaliser. Elito produced a great ball for Johnson who in turn crossed in towards Mason-Clark but Pears beat him to it.

Just before the break, the match would swing back into the host’s favour when Coulthirst was shown a second yellow card for apparent simulation in the middle of the field.

By the dying stages, the Bees were now throwing it all at Gateshead, including moving Sweeney into an advanced position but it would come to no avail, the Heed would pick up all three points and remain unbeaten under their new manager Ben Clark.

The hosts found the equaliser three minutes after the restart. Greg Olley got on the end of a cross from Thomson and slid the ball past Mark Cousins from

TAKING THE

TAKING THE MIC

WHERE DO YOU GO TO, MY LOVELY? Last week, as you recall, we left our intrepid scribe mercilessly plugging Mike Bayly’s imminent new book “100 British Football Grounds to Visit Before You Die”, desperately trying in the process to defend his love of Feethams, Somerton Park and other stadia now lost to the footballing landscape.

Of the really big arenas, I richly enjoyed my trip to Anfield. The architecture and atmosphere are both incredible, and I could only imagine what it was like in its original heyday of a packed, standing Kop. A visit to the club’s museum and a 7-1 victory over Southampton (complete with a Michael Owen hat-trick) added to the occasion. Old Trafford, the Emirates and The Stadium of Light – which certainly lived up to its title – also bring back special memories.

The question was also asked as to which current grounds YOU would choose to include in the 100. There are no rules. No criteria. With that in mind, here are some of my favourites – and the personal reasons behind them. Craven Cottage (Fulham) and Tannadice (Dundee Utd) get automatic spots, simply because they are where I completed The 92 and The 42, although both are also really nice venues.

As I wrote last time, though, I have a particular soft spot for the smaller venues, mainly because of their individuality and personal touches. Case in point: Stranraer’s Stair Park, with the bandstand that sits between it and the main road.

BARNETFC.COM 39

TAKING THE MIC

Continuing in a Scottish vein, Arbroath’s Gayfield also has plenty of character, not least because of its VERY close proximity of the North Sea. I am thankful, however, that I haven’t visited the ground in the depth of winter.

Many visiting fans dislike Alfreton, but I have a personal love for the Town Ground having seen it grow and develop in line with the Reds’ rise from the depths of the NPL and North East Counties League to the National League. And if you collect programmes, it has one of the very best shops anywhere.

Dartford’s Princes Park is the original environmentally friendly stadium, complete with a living (grass) roof, solar panels and a water recycling system. And it not only does good; it LOOKS good, with its Wooden Fan sculpture a particular highlight.

Finally, while most three-sided grounds provide a similarly incomplete atmosphere, that is most definitely not the case for the Northern Prem’s Stocksbridge Park Steels. From its terracing to its stand, this place is packed full of character. The view of the Pennines isn’t bad either. And the people are incredibly welcoming. Forget the Jamie Vardy connection. Visit SPS on its own merits. You won’t be disappointed.

Honours even at The Hive as the Bees draw 1-1 with Halifax Town. On a bitterly cold night at The Hive, Barnet FC met Halifax Town, a week after their last meeting, where the Bees were defeated 3-0.

Fonguck who struggled to get to release his shot. Eventually after being pinged around in the Halifax box, the keeper grabbed the ball.

Barnet start the stronger out of the two teams with a flurry of Alexander crosses from the right-hand side.

In the 54th minute a long ball over the top found Tarpey who ran brilliantly with the ball, cutting in from the left onto his right, dummies the shot, once, twice and at the third attempt the shot is blocked.

Barnet’s goal started with some great play from Mason-Clark, as he plucked the ball out the air on the edge of the box, offloaded it to Wesley Fonguck, who got it out from under his feet quickly and finished smartly into the top corner of the Halifax goal.

Half way through the second half Sparks took a corner, laid it off to Alexander who then found Sweeney at the back post whose header thundered off the near post.

Halifax’s and former Bee Manny Duku had a header and was saved very well by Cousins.

8 minutes later the visitors equalised, with a ball through the middle of The Bees’ defence found Devante Rodney, who took one touch and found the far corner of Cousins net.

In the 30th minute, it was very clever play again from Mason-Clark who cuts in from the right and found Tarpey who had to work extremely hard to get his shot away. With quick reactions from Halifax keeper, Johnson, he sent it behind for a corner. The resulting corner was taken quickly and found Sweeney at the near post who headed wide.

The last 10 minutes saw The Bees with the lion’s share of possession but could not find the Halifax goal despite good play. As the board went up for four additional minutes, Tarpey whipped in a delightful free-kick from the lefthand side narrowly missing Akinola’s outstretched leg.

Barnet dominated possession. Most of the attack came from the right-hand side with Alexander and Fonguck link up play.

Barnet threw everything at Halifax in the dying embers of the game however the ref ended what was a frustrating game for The Bees who have to share the points with Halifax. Barnet will feel extremely hard done by not to get the full 3 points. Darren Currie’s Barnet will play at The Hive on Saturday against Hartlepool.

Half time – After the additional 3 minutes The Bees went in at half time with a well-deserved 1-0 lead. The Bees then started the second half with same quick, attacking play that suited them so well in the first half. The ball was picked up from Mason Clark who ran with it from his own half, 40 yards up the pitch finding

DON’T MISS A GAME THIS SEASON WWW.FAWSL.COM/TICKETS

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

WHAT’S THE BUZZ JOSH PALMER National League South side Hemel Hempstead Town have contributed money to the online donation fund to help raise money for their midfielder Spencer McCall. The 24 year old, who joined the Hertfordshire side in October 2017 from local rivals Wingate and Finchley, sustained an injury towards the end of last season, which was originally suspected to be a fracture in his lower leg, but this was recently incorrect, with the player recently being diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer, which he is currently undergoing a course of chemotherapy treatment for. The online donations page has a set target of £10,000, and so far has, as of time of writing, raised just of £7,000. “The club are going to be holding fundraising events in order to raise funds for Spencer so please keep an eye open for news on the club website and social media outlets” said a club statement. “All of our thoughts and best wishes go out to Spencer and his family at this time, we look forward to seeing him back at Vauxhall Road in better health soon”. Former Birmingham City and York City midfielder Charlie Cooper has been sent out on loan for a second time this season. After being loaned out to Forest Green Rovers twice, the second of which was their successful promotion campaign in 2016/17, he transferred to the Gloucestershire side that summer. After featuring in their first game in the Football League, against us, where he assisted the first goal, he went on to play 31 times, scoring once. This season, however, he was loaned out to Newport County over the summer. The deal ended in mid December, with the intention to loan him out again in the January window. However, this was delayed after he picked up a minor injury in a training session. He now starts his loan deal, at our rivals Boreham Wood, where the 21 year old is set to remain until the end of the season. Despite it only being mid March, the first team to have been confirmed mathematically relegated is Staines Town. The Swans were relegated last week from the Southern League Premier Division South, having only picked up 9 points all season, picked up from just 3 wins, having lost their other 30 games. Excluding the round of fixtures played midweek, the side were 21 points of the team directly above them, and 29 points off of safety, with just 9 games to go. The team finished as high as 8th in the National League South in 2014, and have now suffered their second relegation in four seasons. BARNETFC.COM 46

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

Unai Emery and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, managers of Premier League sides Arsenal and Manchester United respectively, have both publicly condemned a fan who ran onto the pitch and attempted to push United defender Chris Smalling during the game between the two sides at the Emirates Stadium last Sunday. The fan was subsequently arrested by police, and is set to receive a lifetime ban from the ground. “We utterly condemn the behaviour of the individual who ran on to the pitch and approached Chris Smalling” said a Gunners statement. “We would like to apologise to Chris and United, and are pleased that he was apprehended and arrested. We will be working closely with the Metropolitan Police”.

This came just a few hours after a Birmingham City fan ran onto the pitch at St Andrew’s during his sides’ Second City derby against Aston Villa, where he jumped the barriers onto the pitch before punching Villains winger Jack Grealish in the face from behind. The incident, which took place in the 10th minute of the game, was carried out by 27 year old Paul Mitchell, of Worcestershire, who was immediately arrested, subsequently pleading guilty to magistrates at court on Monday morning. Grealish went on to score the only goal of the game, scoring the winner in the 67th minute. In a third fan related incident last weekend, Rangers captain James Tavernier placed his blame at the Easter Road security after being confronted on the pitch by a Hibernian fan, during his sides’ away trip there last Friday. The Hibs’ chief executive Leeann Dempster was forced into apologising to the Gers’ captain after a fan invaded the pitch, and was seemingly allowed to jump from the East Stand and confronted him during the Scottish Premiership tie. This came despite the hosts drafting in over 50 extra stewards, after a glass bottle was thrown at Scott Sinclair during the Scottish Cup quarter final just a mere 6 days previous.

Having only signed for the side early last weekend, on loan Barnet youngster Joe Payne made his debut for our rivals Enfield Town, and would go on to score his first league goal in the same game. The 19 year old, who is from Enfield, joined us in 2010, featuring at various youth levels before making his first team league debut on his birthday last season, an away game against Stevenage. He also featured as a substitute against Peterborough United in a Checkatrade Trophy game, as well as scoring a stunning goal from the halfway line in the Middlesex Senior Cup, which went viral online, ironically against his new club Town. During his sides’ visit to Bostik Isthmian League Premier strugglers Whitehawk, his side went 1-0 up just under 2 minutes into the game, but went into the break level after a 40 yard goal. Payne scored after 74 minutes, before the game was wrapped up with a third goal 7 minutes later, despite having a man sent off 15 minutes into the second half.

Newport County have been in the transfer market this week, snapping up Will Randall on a short term contract, which runs up until the end of the season. The 21 year old joined his hometown club Swindon Town as a 9 year old in 2006, rising up through the ranks to the first team, where the winger would go on to make 11 appearances, before being signed up by then Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2016. After only making a handful of academy appearances, he was loaned out to Walsall and Forest Green Rovers, before being sent to Spain to play for FC Jumilla, of Murcia, who play in Segunda División B – Group 4, the third tier of Spanish football. He was released by the West Midlands side back in mid January, but has been training with the Gloucestershire club since. “I’m delighted to sign for Newport. I’ve been training here for a few weeks and I can’t wait to get started” he said.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

Cameron McGeehan, of League 1 side Barnsley, was last week charged with violent conduct after an incident during the Tykes 3-0 victory against Southend United at Roots Hall on 2nd March. The 23 year old scored the first goal of the game shortly after half time. The incident, where the former Norwich City, Cambridge United and Luton Town player appeared to stamp on an opponent, was not spotted by the match officials during the game, but it was picked up by television cameras, which subsequently lead an Independent Regulatory Commission to find him guilty of the offence. At the time of the incident, McGeehan’s side had been reduced to 10 men following a red card midway through the second half. His punishment was a 3 game ban, which included last weekends win at home to Accrington Stanley, Tuesday’s home tie against Sunderland and the visit to Doncaster Rovers last night.

Zinedine Zidane has this week been reappointed manager of Spanish giants Real Madrid, despite being sacked just 10 months ago, becoming the third Los Blancos manager this season. After being sacked at the end of May last year, he was replaced by Julen Lopetegui, who lasted 4 months, including the sale of club legend Christiano Ronaldo and the worst win percentage (42.86%) since April 1985 under Amancio Amaro. He was replaced by Santiago Solari, who won 68.75% of his games, losing just 8 times, as well as winning the FIFA Club World Cup. During the Frenchman’s first spell at the club, which lasted just under 2 ½ years, he won 104 of his 149 games, as well as a La Liga title a Supercopa de España, 3 consecutive Champions Leagues, 2 UEFA Super Cups and 2 FIFA Club World Cups, meaning that he won a major trophy every 16.5 games.

GATESHEAD AWAY POSTCARD Gateshead is one of my favourite away days. It’s my Mum’s home town so we usually get some of her Geordie family in the home end to give us a bit of rivalry. It had been my Grandad’s birthday in the week so we left Leeds early around 10:30am to get to Gateshead for midday. This gave us time to spend with the family and get a proper Northern chip butty and a delicacy which seems to only exist in the North East – a pineapple ring! We arrived at the ground by 2:15pm and I was able to bribe some of my cousins with chocolate to come into the away end. Our end filled up nicely and the game was underway. We started the game as the stronger team with some early chances from Sweeney, Taylor and Mason-Clark. We finally got our goal on 24 minutes when Mason-Clark put us one ahead beating the offside trap set up by Gateshead. They had a couple of chances but we were the dominant team for the rest of the half. On 38 minutes, Shaq was given a yellow card for a push on Williamson. On the stroke of half time, things turned worse when Shaq was given a second yellow and sent off for diving! I enjoyed my usual hot chocolate at half time and was thrilled when Jeanette gave me a Newcastle United programme she had bought for me when visiting St James’ earlier in the day! I also stuck to my word and gave my cousins the chocolate that I had promised for coming into the Barnet end! We came out to play the second half with 10 men and just 3 minutes into the half, Gateshead got an equaliser when Olley tapped it in from a cross. It was clear this game could still go either way. On 57 minutes, it was us who were close when Mason-Clark had his header cleared in the goalmouth. He had a chance again on 64 minutes that he was unlucky to miss. Sparkes had his chance at goal but we couldn’t seem to get our shot into the back of the net! On 68 minutes, it was Gateshead’s effort that was somehow kept out after a goalmouth scramble! However on 72 minutes, Gateshead took the lead with a curling goal from White on the edge of the box. We did have our chances to level the scores back up and Tarpey came on to help the cause but unfortunately we were unable to find the back of the net and the game finished 2-1 to Gateshead. The players all came over at the end to applaud the 115 Bees for their support. We said bye to the other Barnet fans and our family after the game before getting in the car and heading back to Leeds. We went home via the coast giving us a nice little view of the sea before getting on the motorway. I slept the rest of the way and we were back home by 8pm giving us a fun evening of football highlights! Although we lost, it wasn’t a bad performance from the boys and all in all, a lovely day out.
