WRITES
Darren Currie
Good Evening and welcome back to The Hive for tonight’s National League fixture against Aldershot Town. I’d like to extend that welcome to Gary Waddock and his coaching staff. Firstly, I’d like to start by thanking the 200 or so Barnet fans that made the trip up to Salford City at the weekend. Your support was greatly appreciated by myself, my staff and all the players. The week just gone has been positive and we look forward to two more home games this week. Our home form has been good of late, there is a togetherness growing, I can feel it and sense it with the fans. Everyone is starting to buy into what we are trying to do, the team have shown their qualities and commitment of late which has contributed to our upturn in performances and results. We are under no illusions that these next two games are both going to be tough, both for very different reasons but it is about us showing a level consistency now.
I won’t approach tonight’s game any different to that of Harrogate or Salford, every game sets out new challenges and tonight will be difficult. Aldershot will pass the ball well, Gary is a top guy and a very good manager, they’ll be confident following their result on Saturday,
but we are likewise and are looking forward to the game. Enjoy the match, #LetsBeeTogether

SKIPPER’S
NOTES
Hello everybody, welcome back to The Hive London for tonight’s league match against Aldershot Town. We had a good week last week, going unbeaten with 3 clean sheets. When Darren took over, we were conceding too many goals in both the League and the Cup and the whole squad targeted this as an area we needed to improve - I think we are now showing the fruits of that labour. You can look at last week in two ways, it was undefeated and we kept 3 clean sheets but we would have liked to have taken more than 5 points. We feel like we almost did enough to grab the win on Saturday, but it was a good result regardless and it would be great to build on that with a win tonight.
win tonight and they’ll go into the match on the front foot making them a dangerous team. I’m looking forward to seeing a few familiar faces. With 5 weeks to go, we’re looking to get as many points on the board as possible, keep up our good level of recent performances and build some momentum so that we have a good foundation to mount a challenge next season.
Thank you for your support and enjoy the match!
It will be a bittersweet game for myself this evening, I enjoyed two good seasons at Aldershot and it’s sad to see them in a tough position. But, they know that they need to

ALDERSHOT TOWN CLUB HISTORY Formation and the Isthmian League Years On March 25th 1992, Aldershot FC became the first Football League team to fold during the season since Accrington Stanley in 1962. From the ashes came phoenix club Aldershot Town, who were formed on April 22nd 1992 and managed by ex-Aldershot FC centre back Steve Wignall. The “new” Shots began life in Isthmian League Division 3 and opened the 1992-93 season in a carnival atmosphere at the Recreation Ground against Clapton. Braces from Mark Butler and Steve Stairs secured a 4-2 win in front of 1493 fans, which was more than watched their predecessors’ last home game at the same ground. Aldershot Town won their first 10 games and didn’t suffer their first
(and only) defeat of the season until losing a league game at Clapton on January 2nd (at Clapton) in what was their 24th outing in all competitions. By then, they had broken attendance records at most grounds at which they had played, buoyed by a superb away following of around 1000. The campaign finished with the Shots as champions by a commanding 18-point margin, whilst strikers Mark Butler and Steve Stairs scored a combined total of 62 goals in all competitions. A second successive promotion (via a third-place finish) followed in 1993-94 together with a run to the FA Vase quarter-finals. From the start of their inaugural season, Aldershot Town went 20 months (35 games) before suffering their first-ever home league defeat – to Banstead Athletic in April 1994. Steve Wignall departed in January 1994 to take charge of Division 3 side BARNETFC.COM 11
Colchester United and was replaced by ex-Nottingham Forest winger Steve Wigley. Despite a strong finish to the 1994-95 season, the Shots missed out on a third successive promotion on goal difference. Following fifth- and seventh-place finishes over the next two seasons, Wigley left to take up a post in (former club) Forest’s youth set up in the summer of 1997. Following a spell under the caretaker management trio of Andy Meyer, Mark Butler and Joe Roach, Enfield boss George Borg was appointed in September 1997 and his first season yielded increased crowds and the Isthmian League Division 1 title. In 1998-99, striker Gary Abbott scored 48 goals in all competitions as the Shots won both the Isthmian League Cup and the Hampshire Senior Cup. In 1999-2000, they retained the latter trophy, won the Isthmian League Charity Shield and ended the campaign as runners-up (to Dagenham and Redbridge) in the
OPPOSITION
Isthmian League Premier Division. A fourth-place finish was claimed in 2000-01, whilst November 2001 saw a club record crowd of 7500 fill the Rec for the 6-2 defeat by Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup first round. Following a run of poor results and pressure from fans, Borg resigned in mid-January 2002. Borg’s assistant Stuart Cash took temporary charge before Terry Brown left his post at Hayes in late March to come to North East Hampshire, thus beginning a five-year love affair with the Shots fans. Following a thirdplace finish and a third Hampshire Senior Cup win in 2001-02, the squad was overhauled and, having attained top spot in mid-November 2002 (ironically by way of victory over Brown’s former club Hayes), the Shots remained in top spot to claim the title and, with it, promotion to the Football Conference; they also retained the Hampshire Senior Cup with a victory over Bashley.
The Conference Years Following a home victory over Accrington Stanley, Aldershot Town remained in the play-off positions for the entire 2003-04 season as well as winning the Isthmian League Charity Shield (for a second time) and reaching the FA Trophy semi-finals, where they lost to eventual winners Hednesford Town. Further disappointment followed, when the Shots were beaten on penalties by Shrewsbury Town (after a 1-1 draw) in the play-off final at Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium. That summer, one era ended as another began: record appearance-maker Jason Chewins left the club having worn the red and blue of Aldershot on 489 occasions. Meanwhile, the club went full-time. More play-off heartache was experienced in 2004-05, this time
in the shape of a shoot-out defeat at Carlisle United in the semi-finals. The next two seasons were disappointing for the Shots (13th and ninth places respectively being secured), whilst the only silverware came by way of a fifth County Cup in 2006-07. In March 2007, Terry Brown resigned to take care of his wife, who had been ill for some time. Assistant Manager Martin Kuhl took caretaker charge for the remainder of the season.
Promotion to the Football League Gary Waddock was appointed as Aldershot Town manager in May 2007, whilst Martin Kuhl stayed on as his assistant. The Shots played an attacking brand of football, especially at home, where they lost just three times and, having won the Conference Premier title by drawing 1-1 on an emotional night in Exeter, they finished the 2007-08 season with an 18-match unbeaten run and two divisional records: 31 wins and 101 points. A “double” was achieved as a 3-3 extra time draw against Rushden and Diamonds at the Recreation Ground was followed by a win in the shoot-out to claim the Setanta Shield. Sixteen years after the quest had begun, the town of Aldershot had a Football League side to cheer again. A club record £130,000 was received from Crewe Alexandra for winger Joel Grant in the summer of 2008.
The Football League Years Scott Donnelly (the Shots’ scorer “that night” at Exeter) scored the only goal of the club’s first-ever Football League game, a 1-0 win at Accrington, and the club finished a respectable thirteenth in League 2 in 2008-09. In mid-October 2009, Waddock and Kuhl left the (now named) EBB Stadium to join Wycombe Wanderers.
BARNETFC.COM 12
Jason Dodd and Paul Williams took caretaker charge before ex-Reading assistant manager Kevin Dillon was appointed as boss. An unexpected sixth-place finish was attained in 2009-10, but a 3-0 aggregate defeat to Rotherham United haled the Shots at the semi-final stage. With the 2010-11 season having yielded several poor performances, including a toothless 2-0 loss at Conference South outfit Dover Athletic in the FA Cup second round, Kevin (and assistant Gary Owers) were dismissed in early January having attained just a dozen wins from 39 games in all competitions. When Kevin departed the EBB Stadium, Aldershot were in 20th place in League 2 and just six points above the drop zone. The next occupant of the Shots hot seat was Dean Holdsworth, who resigned from his post at Newport County to come to Aldershot, eventually guiding the club to a midtable finish that season. Aldershot Town gained nationwide attention in 2011-12, when FA Premier League giants Manchester United visited the EBB Stadium for a League Cup fourth round tie; 7044 fans saw the Red Devils win 3-0 in front of the Sky Sports cameras. The Shots had a good end-of-season run-in and eventually finished just six points outside the play-offs in 11th. Unfortunately, despite paying a club record fee to Stevenage for striker Craig Reid, neither the home form nor the style of play from the previous season was evident very much in 201213 and Holdsworth was sacked in midFebruary with the team in 20th spot. Former Rotherham United boss Andy Scott was brought in, but couldn’t stem the tide and relegation back to the Conference Premier (the club’s first such event) was confirmed at end of the season as the Shots eventually finished rock-bottom of the table.
OPPOSITION
Administration and Return to the Conference Premier On May 2nd 2013, just five days after their relegation from League 2, Aldershot Town officially entered administration with reported debts of £1.4 million. Following a period of uncertainty over the club’s survival, which led to the departure of the majority of the playing staff and numerous redundancies behind-the-scenes, the club exited administration under the auspices of a CVA on July 30th, with a consortium led by former chairman Shahid Azeem taking ownership of the club on August 1st. The Shots began the 2013-14 season with a 10-point deduction as a punishment for the aforementioned entry into administration. With a hastily-assembled squad (some of whom were signed in the hotel the night before the season’s opener at Grimsby Town) that hadn’t trained together, even the most ardent Shots fan wasn’t expecting the draw and three wins in the opening seven games that saw the deficit wiped out by the first week of September. However, within two months of that achievement, Andy Scott’s men were knocked out the FA Cup by Gloucestershire side Shortwood United, who were three divisions and 65 places below them in the football pyramid; what made the 2-1 replay defeat (following a 1-1 draw) more embarrassing was that it occurred in North East Hampshire! An eight-game winless run across January, February and March saw the Shots eliminated at the quarter-finals stage of the FA Trophy (by Havant and Waterlooville) and plunged into a relegation fight. However, Brett Williams’ 24 x league goals coupled with the return of Brentford loanee midfielder Manny Oyeleke and the
arrival of centre half Mark Phillips (on loan from Southend United) resulted in the club’s Conference Premier place being retained. The team attained four wins out of seven at the end of the season, with safety being assured by a 2-1 win on Easter Monday at local rivals Woking in the penultimate game – Mission Accomplished!
Exiting CVA and Starting From Zero in 2014-15 On July 31st 2014, Aldershot Town announced that they had paid off all of their debts, which enables them to exit the auspices of the CVA after just 12 months – a massive two years ahead of the required date! The icing on the cake came with the additional news that the club had made “a modest profit” in the first year of trading under the new owners. Even though the fans’ expectation levels were low, the 2014-15 campaign still yielded very little joy. The only real highlight was the 1-0 victory over League 2 side Portsmouth at home in an FA Cup first round replay following a well-deserved 2-2 draw at Fratton Park. Another strong home display saw a goalless draw claimed against League 1 Rochdale in round 2, although many criticised the fact that the Shots’ dominance didn’t materialise into a victory. A season-defining four days was endured in mid-December – they were surprisingly dumped out of the FA Trophy at home in a first round tie by Isthmian League Division 1 South side Burgess Hill Town (who were 55 places below the Shots in the football pyramid) before being brushed aside by Rochdale in their FA Cup second round replay (4-1). Following constant criticism of his playing style, a run of just one win in 12 games in all competitions (including five successive home league defeats and just two wins in 11 league games that had seen the Shots drop to 18th in the table) led to Andy Scott being sacked in midJanuary 2015.
BARNETFC.COM 14
Defender Chris Barker took picked up the reins for the season’s remaining 15 games on a player-caretaker basis and led the Shots to Conference safety before stepping aside in the summer to become player-assistant to newlyappointed ex-Dundee boss Barry Smith.
2015-16 onwards The 2015-16 season was another one of disappointing performances, epitomised by a club record 8-2 defeat by Chester in early March. The Shots finished the campaign having scored just 23 home league goals, equalled the club record for fewest home league wins (7) and most home league losses (12) as well as setting new club records for most league losses in a season (22) and lowest average home league attendance (1607); the season was also the fourth in succession in which the aforementioned crowd figure had dropped. Conversely, the nine away league victories was the club’s best tally since they won the Conference Premier in 2007-08. Another lasting memory will be the dearth of attempts on goal that the Shots had over the course of the season. With boss Barry Smith having decided to return to his native Scotland, May 2016 saw Gary Waddock become the first-ever Shots boss to return, which ultimately led to the Shots starting a campaign with a higher level of hope than had been seen for many a season.

He enjoyed three seasons in the Premier League with Wolves, notably scoring in a 2-1 win over Manchester United. After six years at the club he joined Oldham Athletic and then back to Colchester before joining Orient at the start of last season. He has also played at Chester City, Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and Braintree Town on loan.
Gloucester-born Bernard can play across the whole defence and joined the Shots on loan from Birmingham City in July 2018. GARY WADDOCK MANAGER
The former Republic of Ireland and Queen’s Park Rangers midfielder, who leaves his role as Assistant First-Team Coach at Barnet, previously led The Shots into the Football League in 2008 as he won the Blue Square Premier title with a thenrecord total of 101 points. That season also saw records set for victories in a Conference season (31) and most number of home wins by Aldershot FC or Aldershot Town, with 18, as well as triumph in the Setanta Shield and a run to the semi-final of the FA Trophy. “It’s a situation I never thought I’d be in but I’m delighted to be here,” said Waddock. “It’s a nice feeling. I like to assemble squads that I would like to watch. I’ve missed the people here and I’ve missed the supporters – the atmosphere they created at home games was amazing and I loved that. We have to be able to give them something to cheer about and we’re going to try our best to get this place rocking again.” “Gary was clearly the number one choice for a lot of supporters, and he was our number one choice too,” explained Chairman Shahid Azeem. “The Board have listened to what the fans have told us, but it was a tough decision. Ultimately, though, we need somebody who will galvanise the Club and bring supporters back to the EBB Stadium. I hope that all Aldershot Town supporters are as excited about what Gary can achieve here as we are.” The Kingsbury-born 54 year-old began his career with Queen’s Park Rangers in 1979 and rapidly forged a fine reputation as a tough-tackling midfielder. In a career spanning 491 Football League appearances, Gary played in the 1982 FA Cup Final, won the Second Division championship in 1982-83, and subsequently played for Charleroi, Millwall, Swindon Town, Bristol Rovers and Luton Town. He also won 21 caps for the Republic of Ireland and narrowly missed out on selection for the 1990 World Cup. Gary’s coaching career began back at Loftus Road, with the Rangers Academy, from where he graduated, in February 2006, to first-team manager. Having taken The Shots into the Football League in his first season, Aldershot Town finished 15th in League Two and had risen to sixth when, after two-and-half-years at the EBB Stadium, Gary was appointed manager of Wycombe Wanderers, in October 2009. He led the Chairboys to promotion back into League One in 2011. Following a spell as Head of Coaching at MK Dons, Gary was appointed Head Coach at Oxford United and, in 2014, Assistant Manager and then Caretaker Manager at Portsmouth. Dave Smith's side were early pace-setters in the Fourth Division, winning all but one of their opening six matches, then triumphed 5-0 against Doncaster and Crewe. In the FA Cup, Aldershot defeated Notts County 2-0, Colchester 3-1 and Shrewsbury 2-0 in the third round second replay before two 0-0 draws against Stoke. The Shots lost 3-0 at Molineux in the fourth round second replay, their eighth FA Cup tie of the campaign. Terry Matthews netted four goals in a 6-1 win at home to York in their penultimate match as Aldershot finished mid-table.
1963/64 Aldershot defeated top-flight Aston Villa en route to the FA Cup fourth round in 1963/64. Alan Woan grabbed a hat-trick as the Shots kicked off their Fourth Division campaign with a 4-1 win at home to Hartlepools. They beat Tranmere 5-4 and other highlights included Tony Priscott scoring four times in an 8-2 win over Barrow, then Ron Fogg and Peter Kearns netting hat-tricks in a 7-0 demolition of Stockport as they finished mid-table. In the FA Cup, Aldershot beat Sutton United 4-0 and Torquay 3-2 before drawing 0-0 at Aston Villa. They won 2-1 in the third round replay but lost 2-1 to Swindon in the fourth round.

1969/70 Jack Howarth and Dennis Brown scored 36 goals between them as Aldershot finished sixth in the Fourth Division in 1969/70. Ex-England international Jimmy Melia became player-manager and signed Dennis Brown from Northampton. The Shots lost just once in 14 Fourth Division matches during mid-season and in the FA Cup defeated Margate 7-2, with Jack Howarth and Dennis Brown netting hat-tricks, then Bristol Rovers 3-1 and Huddersfield Town 3-1 before taking Carlisle United to a fourth round replay. Jimmy Melia and Richard Walden were ever-present, while Jack Howarth and Dennis Brown missed just one match.
1972/73 Steve Melledew was leading marksman with 18 goals as Aldershot won promotion for the first time in 1972/73. Tommy McAnearney returned as manager and goalkeeper Tony Godfrey rejoined the Shots from Rochdale. They were unbeaten in their opening six Fourth Division games and maintained their promotion challenge, with Jack Howarth returning from Rochdale in November. Aldershot lost just one of their last 12 matches, clinching fourth place with a 1-1 draw at Stockport in their final match. Ray Dean, Tony Godfrey and Steve Melledew were ever-present, while five other players missed just seven games between them.
1973/74 Jack Howarth was top scorer with 25 goals as Aldershot finished in their highest-ever position in 1973/74. Summer signings John Richardson and Bob Wallace made their debuts as the newly promoted Shots began life in the Third Division with a 0-0 draw at home to Tranmere. They won just three of their opening 16 matches before a 5-1 win over Wrexham in mid-November sparked an upturn in results. Aldershot lost only twice in 15 games during a mid-season run and Terry Bell grabbed a hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Rochdale, then Jack Howarth repeated the feat in a 6-0 trouncing of Cambridge United. The Shots finished eighth.

1978/79 Ace marksman John Dungworth starred as Aldershot reached the FA Cup fifth round and narrowly missed promotion in 1978/79. Tommy McAnearney's side were unbeaten in their opening six Fourth Division games and triumphed 6-0 at home to Bradford City. In the FA Cup they beat Weymouth 2-0, Barking 2-1, Sheffield United 1-0 and Swindon 2-1 before taking Shrewsbury to a fifth round replay. They maintained their challenge with just one defeat in 25 matches but won only twice in their last six games and finished fifth. John Dungworth scored 34 goals overall, while goalkeeper Glenn Johnson was also ever-present.
1986/87 Len Walker plotted Aldershot's 1986/87 Fourth Division play-off final success. The Shots won just two of their opening nine games, with Mike Ring grabbing a hat-trick against Lincoln, but three successive wins in December lifted them to sixth place. They beat top-flight Oxford United 3-0 in the FA Cup third round and took Barnsley to a fourth round replay. Aldershot also reached the Freight Rover Trophy southern final. Top scorer Martin Foyle joined Oxford United in March but the Shots had a ten-match unbeaten run and qualified for the play-offs in sixth place. They beat Bolton 3-2, then Wolves 3-0 in the two-legged final.
2002/03 Aldershot Town stormed to the Isthmian League title with a club record 105 points in 2002/03. Terry Brown's side won all but two of their opening 11 Isthmian League games and remained in pole position for the rest of the season. The Shots overcame a mid-season loss of firepower and resisted a late challenge from Canvey Island, with a ten-match unbeaten finish including a 5-1 win over St Albans City and 6-2 demolition of Hendon. England Semi-Pro international Roscoe D'Sane was leading marksman, while experienced trio Paul Moody, Karl Ready and skipper Ray Warburton made a significant contribution.

2003/04 Aldershot Town reached the Conference play-off final in 2003/04. The newly promoted Shots began life in the Conference with a 2-1 victory at home to Accrington Stanley and won their first four matches to go top of the table. They remained in contention with an eight-match unbeaten run and beat Forest Green Rovers and Grays Athletic in the FA Cup before losing 1-0 at Colchester in the second round. Despite failing to win any of their last five games they qualified for the play-offs in fifth place. Aldershot drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury in the final but lost on penalties. Roscoe D'Sane was leading marksman with 27 goals overall.
2007/08 New manager Gary Waddock guided Aldershot Town to the Conference title with a record 101 points in 2007/08. The Shots lost two of their first three home games, including a 3-0 defeat by Torquay, but then raced to the top with six straight wins. They lost at Stevenage and Burton, then regained pole position with seven consecutive victories. John Grant was leading marksman with 20 goals as the Shots gained a record 31 wins, finishing 15 points clear at the top. They clinched the ‘double’ with victory over Rushden & Diamonds in the Setanta Shield but lost to eventual winners Ebbsfleet United in the FA Trophy semi-finals.

ALEX JONES
ALEX JONES DIGRESSES KINGS AND QUEENS OF ENGLAND
Road to Wembley
I am currently reading this work written by Nigel Cawthorne, oddly it has a paragraph on Barnet. Apparently, the War of the Roses is also known as the Cousins War, no connection there with Mark. Warwick the Kingmaker was killed in the Battle of Barnet in 1471. That is partly the basis for our badge.
You may recall we are following the progress of Barnet follower Joe Gibney, and is close to his goal, as he started his journey at Barkingside and will next join the scramble for tickets as Manchester City take on Brighton. Sad that Sarah Watts, who I know from FSF meetings, is no longer with us, as she would have relished the big game, after all the tireless campaigning for the Falmer site, and Brighton’s nomadic existence. Barnet have played Brighton at the Goldstone, the unloved Withdean, the Amex, and even Gillingham. It has been a long journey, for which Chris Houghton deserves some credit.
North Ferriby no more
he scored the winning goal which clinched Manchester City the title. The little Argentinian is fond of scoring in braces, and so it proved. Perhaps VAR would have exposed the winner as offside and Mr Gibney reckoned the dive for the penalty was the greatest fall in Sterling since Brexit. Still, there seems to be something wrong with the system, when the Eye in the Sky is employed in some but not all FA Cup games. Still, in my lifetime, Swans had not previously reached a quarter final, then like London buses, two came along at once. Last year, Tottenham only had one song but won quite easily, and not another game was won all season. In 2019, the Jacks scared the best team in Britain, so that is progress.
Aldershot Town
Swansea Sound
Barnet have never played North Ferriby United, as their one season in the National League coincided with us being back in League Two. Sadly that will not happen any time soon as the Humberside club were liquidated in the High Court. Less than four years ago, I witnessed their finest hour when they triumphed in the FA Trophy Final against Wrexham on penalties, following a pulsating game which ended 3-3. Now their fixtures have been annulled. It is to be hoped that a phoenix club will rise some day. As I write there is a thirteen point gap between sixth-placed Chelsea and Wolves, which illustrates the haves and have nots in English football. Just a fraction of the money which sustains the top table would have helped keep North Ferriby afloat.
Joe was mentioned over the tannoy by Swansea Sound breakfast DJ, and chaplain to the club, Kevin Johns. It was a fantastic game, the Swans racing to a 2-0 lead, but such is the difference in resources, that Manchester City could send on Raheem Sterling, who, at £44 million, cost considerably more than the entire Swans team put together. The other substitute was, in my opinion, the greatest player to have graced English football, in the last five or six years…… ladies and gentleman I give you Mr Sergio Aguero. Some people may forget just how young he was in 2012 when

Barnet have an unfortunate tradition of bad luck at the Recreation Ground. I recall one game, a few years ago, being abandoned due to fog, and another match which was expunged from the records, as that was the season of Aldershot’s financial demise. Particularly sad for the late Carl Hoddle, who scored a blinding goal which was deleted from the records. Now we meet again, once again as Non-League rivals. So a competitive game is bound to follow.

The Bees returned to winning ways on Tuesday night as they beat play-off chasers Harrogate Town 1-0 at The Hive London. Dave Tarpey bagged the only goal of the game on the half-hour mark as Darren Currie’s men came away with maximum points.
over the top to Mason-Clark. He then found Tarpey in the box who produced a quality, first time finish past the Harrogate keeper into the top corner.
Both teams named an unchanged side from their last respective fixture where the Bees drew 0-0 with Hartlepool United on Saturday whilst Town beat Maidenhead United 1-0.
Both sides had their fair share of chances, but Barnet were the ones with the upper hand going into halftime. Town produced the first real goal threat of the second half after Warren Burrell latched onto a dipping free-kick but his header could only find the gloves of Cousins.
Within the opening minutes, Elliott Johnson broke forward, down the left-hand side before playing a one-two with Wes Fonguck who fired his cross into full-back’s feet who slashed his shot wide of the Harrogate goal.
Up the other end and the Bees came close to extending their lead when Fonguck found space on the edge of the box before unleashing a curling effort which deflected out of danger.
Soon after, Ephron Mason-Clark was brought down 25 yards out, Tarpey stepped up and narrowly misses the crossbar. One minute later, Harrogate’s own number seven George Thomson took a free-kick from a similar distance which was easily saved by Cousins.
Just past the hour mark, Barnet had another chance to rustle the net again when Coulthirst headed a cross from the right just wide of the post.
22 minutes in, Barnet won a corner which was floated in by Tarpey who found Mason-Clark’s head, forcing the keeper to produce an unorthodox save with is feet.
Despite late pressure from the visitors, Currie’s side managed to hold on to clinch crucial points.
Barnet’s goal stemmed from Shaq Coulthirst picking the ball up in midfield and playing a nice through-ball

TAKING THE
TAKING THE MIC
BEHIND BLUE EYES April 1st will shortly be upon us. Who knows what playful pranks will be played out that day, either privately or under the media’s watchful eyes? Thankfully, April Fools Day falls on a Monday this year, which will be a relief to tannoy announcers everywhere who might otherwise be fearing something of the ilk of the trick sprung upon the Fylde mic man last month and which subsequently went viral.
So it came to pass that at 9am on April 1st, a fax – yes, faxes in those days – tumbled out of my promoter’s machine. Thanks to a business friend, it arrived from a number in Wolverhampton and carried a fictitious letterhead belonging to a made-up copywrite protection agency in the Black Country town – far from the real instigator in Kettering in order to put anyone off the scent. And it stated that the agency represented a Mr Reg Presley (the author of “Wild Thing” and lead singer of the Troggs), had been made aware of the promoter’s use of the song on a regular basis and without permission, and was now demanding him to cease and desist.
Today, however, announcers of the world can fight back. The Fylde prank, which earned nationwide exposure via The Sun, Mirror and TalkSport, as well as social media, reminded me of a rouse I pulled myself many years ago. Yes, behind his warm, cuddly exterior lies a heart of occasional ice, cunning and ruthless calculation. I am not to be trusted.
As a final pay-off, it noted that unpaid royalties of over £5,000 had already accrued and would need to be paid in full, and that this sum would continue to increase weekly if the song continued to be played.
The year was 1993. It was a time long before the interweb and mobile technology. It was also my first year in announcing, working for the Peterborough Panthers Speedway club. My target was the club owner, or “promoter”.
I sat back and waited. My office phone finally rang at 4.30pm. My promoter had spent virtually the entire day trying to discover who had sent the fax – he even rang the random phone number that had been inserted in the letterhead and interrogated the little old lady who answered at the other end. He quizzed every fellow promoter and colleague in the sport, before he got to me by a process of elimination.
I was proud of the fact that we were the first club in the sport to introduce theme songs for every rider in our team. Songs that reflected either their real-life personae or the so-slightly-larger-thanlife characters which we wanted them to portray in order to “big them up”. One such rider was a young Australian named Rod Colquhoun. Tall and lanky, with lengthy hair to match, Rod was pitched to the public as “The Wild Thing”. He was also game for a laugh, and happy to carry a guitar as a prop in all our pre-match introductions. The musical accompaniment of The Trogg’s “Wild Thing” completed the illusion.
Fortunately, he saw the funny side of it all. “Wild Thing” continued throughout the season, and we never did pay a royalty. But like I said, don’t trust me. And by the way, my eyes are green.

Barnet became just the second side so far this league season to come away from the Peninsular Stadium with a clean sheet when they drew 0-0 at Salford City. It was the Bees who had the better start, Dan Sparkes’ dangerous cross two minutes in was headed away by Carl Piergianni and his header struck Shaq Coulthirst, but the forward couldn’t get a shot away before the Salford defender hooked clear.
After the break, a fingertip save by Salford’s Neal prevented Shaq Coulthirst from giving Barnet the lead with an edge-of-the-box strike from Taylor’s pass. Taylor poked the ball goalwards just after the hour mark but his effort was hooked clear by Liam Hogan.
A flowing Barnet move saw Dave Tarpey feed the ball to Sparkes who had a goalbound effort blocked.
Substitute Rory Gaffney had the ball in the net for Salford in the 70th minute but the referee had blown the whistle for a handball by Dieseruvwe before the striker had put the ball across the line.
Tom Walker lined up a shot from the edge of the box but his curling strike was saved by Mark Cousins at the second attempt.
Akinola had a header blocked by Piergianni from Elliott Johnson’s good delivery.
Mani Dieseruvwe fires at goal from 18 yards out but his effort not only cleared the bar but cleared the roof of the stadium.
The Bees number 14 then chased down a lost cause and managed to keep the ball in play close to the corner flag, he then drove at goal getting past Nathan Pond but shot straight at Neal.
Sparkes turned provider when he clipped a ball over the top of the Salford defence to Coulthirst but his first-time effort was saved by Chris Neal.
Wes Fonguck was the next to test the Salford keeper, but again Neal was equal to this effort.
A long throw from Liam Hogan found Devonte Redmond, who curled the ball towards the goal but was denied by the inside of the left post before Gus Mafuta had an effort well blocked by Harry Taylor.
The match finished all square at the Peninsular and the Bees earned their third clean sheet in as many matches
Lois Maynard was the next to strike the woodwork, hitting the crossbar with a low volley on the stretch.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
WHAT’S THE BUZZ JOSH PALMER Following both of their FA Trophy semi-final second leg games on Saturday, both Stockport County and AFC Telford United have condemned the fans of their clubs who caused disturbances of their respective games. Two fans ran onto the pitch and confronted players at Edgeley Park as County conceded a late winner by AFC Fylde, having been leading for a large proportion of the game. The Hatters, who we played in the second round of the FA Cup earlier this season, have said that they will be giving out lifetime bans to those fans once they have been identified. “We are embarrassed by the behaviour of the individuals who ran onto the pitch despite the repeated warnings we have issued advising people not to enter the field of play” said a Stockport statement. “We have been analysing CCTV and other footage in order to identify the two main offenders and we are continuing to liaise with Greater Manchester Police, as this is a criminal matter. We are also seeking to impose lifetime bans from Edgeley Park on these individuals”. Meanwhile, their fellow National League North club Telford have revealed that they received a large number of reports of racial abuse after their home defeat at the hands of our opponents on Saturday Leyton Orient. “We can confirm we have also received several reports of an individual who directed racist abuse at an opposition player as well as several supporters who threw a number of objects onto the field of play above the away dugout,” said a statement by the Bucks. “These incidents have been reported to the FA as they were picked up on the match officials report. As a football club, we will not tolerate behaviour which brings our name into disrepute, and we are committed to taking action wherever we have evidence. We will also share information with the Police so that criminal proceedings can be considered”. Head coach Ian Baird will take over as manager of Sutton United for the rest of the season, after manager Paul Doswell stepped down from the role for a temporary break from football, for personal reasons. “I’ve been putting everything into the job here for 11 years and I do need to take a break now” said Doswell, who is 52. “I’m looking forward to being back in early July refreshed and looking forward to the new season”. Former Southampton, Portsmouth and Leeds United striker Baird, who scored 145 goals in 498 competitive appearances, joined the U’s in 2014 as head coach. BARNETFC.COM 46
WHAT’S THE BUZZ
It has been reported that EFL clubs have backed a proposal to split when the summer transfer window ends, effectively meaning there will be two deadline days. Currently, all clubs have to sign players by deadline day, which is set at the Wednesday or Thursday before the new league season officially kicks off. The new proposals would see Championship clubs have their deadline to complete their signings of loan and permanent players on 8 August, alongside the Premier League like normal. However, League 1 and League 2 sides would then have until the end of August. All 72 League clubs will vote on the matter next month. “By adopting this approach, EFL clubs have been given the opportunity to determine the direction of travel, with our priority ensuring that everyone has a clear understanding of the arrangements as soon as possible so as to ensure plans can be put in place for next season” said EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey in a statement. “Next week’s vote indicates strong support for a difference in approach across the Championship and Leagues One and Two”.
Newport County’s Fraser Franks has expressed his “devastation” on breaking the news that he is set to retire after receiving medical advice. The former England C international joined the side last summer, having originally played for them on loan in 2012. Despite having captained the side during their famous FA Cup victory over Leicester City back in January, his doctors have not given the 28-year-old clearance to continue playing football following his diagnosis with a heart problem. He recently spent some time in hospital due to an irregular heartbeat, therefore missed training and a match as a result. He also said that he is expecting to “remain in football in some capacity”.
National League promotion hopefuls Wrexham have boosted their title bid by signing former Premier League player Kemy Agustien. The 32-yearold joins the side on a short term deal running up until the end of the season, although it is subject to international clearance. He left Barrow last week, having joined them in November, and scored twice in his eleven appearances in Cumbria. He was born in the island of Curacao in the Caribbean but moved to the Netherlands at an early age. He turned out for the likes of Willem II and Roda JC before playing for AZ Alkmaar, who loaned him out to Birmingham City. After another short spell back in the Netherlands, he returned to England with Swansea City in the Premier League, before spells at Crystal Palace and Brighton and Hove Albion. He then had short spells in Denmark, in Scotland with Hamilton Academical, then back to the Netherlands, before playing in the Philippines. After another short spell in Holland, he came back to England featuring for Nuneaton Borough and Halesowen Town before joining Barrow. He has also represented Holland at various youth levels and Curacao at first-team level.
Sisu Capital Ltd, the owners of League 1 side Coventry City, have recently rejected a bid for the club which they have considered “extremely low”. Controversial owners Sisu have been under pressure to sell the Sky Blues for some time, and have dropped from the Championship down to League 2 since their takeover in 2007, but were promoted back to the third tier last season after winning the League 2 playoffs. “For the avoidance of doubt, yet again this was an extremely low bid” said the investment management company in a statement. “It has little credibility and as usual provides no proof of funds nor confirmation of the investors/consortium members”. The bid has reportedly been launched by former vice chairman Gary Hoffman. The side are currently seventh in the table, and a point off the play-off places, with the bid being described as “an effort to undermine and distract from the club’s on-pitch performance”. The consortium’s statement said that their offer of more than £7 million was rejected last week “without any discussion”. The club are also yet to confirm where they will be playing their home games next season, after trouble with their Ricoh Arena stadium, which could mean that they are expelled from the EFL if the upcoming deadline is not met.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
The FA panel who are ruling on the case of currently banned Josh Yorwerth have said that the players’ understanding of anti-doping rules were “flimsy”. The 24-year-old was given a four-year suspension from football last month for evading an anti-doping test in September. He had only signed for Peterborough United last summer from Crawley Town but is now banned from football activity until 2023. His ban came after he reportedly did not answer his door to drug testers, having allegedly taken cocaine just days before, as he believed that he would be given a two-year ban for testing positive to the drug. However, FA rules state that cocaine use carries a maximum ban of three months.
Julian Jeanvier will not face action by the FA over an incident during his Brentford sides’ 1-0 home defeat to West Bromwich Albion. After the game, the Frenchman admitted to spitting near the away fans. The incident took place towards the end of the game between the two sides at Griffin Park on March 16th. The 26-year-old winger asked the club to publicly apologise on his behalf after some Baggies supporters at the game had claimed that he had spat at them. “Brentford FC has made it very clear to Julian that such behaviour is unacceptable” the club said in a statement. “The matter has been dealt with internally and is now considered closed”. The statement continued to say: “However, in discussions with Julian, the defender has admitted spitting in the proximity of West Bromwich Albion fans. He has asked that the club publish this as an apology to any supporters involved in the incident”.

SALFORD AWAY POSTCARD I had been excited to play Salford for the first time ever. After looking at how to get there, I decided to go home for the weekend and have the trip from Leeds, giving me a lie-in on Saturday morning. Me and my parents left just before 1pm and had a nice drive across the Pennines which we haven’t done as much this season. We were in Salford by 2pm and were lucky to find some on-street parking on Moor Lane itself. Despite what the forecast had said, as we went into the ground the sun was shining and it was lovely and warm. I went on a hunt around the ground to find the club shop so I could get myself a badge and eventually found their fan zone. I was absolutely buzzing when I saw the words ‘chips and gravy’ on one of their notices, I knew I was in the north now! I walked back to where the away fans were to watch the teams warm up with my lovely lunch! It was nice to see Jack Taylor and his family there to cheer us on too! As more fans came we congregated behind the goal and after a minutes silence for the attacks in New Zealand, the game was underway. We started the game well and our first proper chance come on 12 minutes when Sparkes’ effort was deflected over the bar. Salford settled into the game too and come close on 37 minutes where their shot hit the inside of the post but thankfully came back out! The game was still 0-0 at half time. As the sun had slowly disappeared and the temperature dropped, hot chocolate was a half time necessity. As we were in the queue, I was shocked to hear the number of people questioning hot Vimto being sold (in the north it’s totally normal and a nice addition to the drinks menu!) The teams came back out and were ready to go again. Early in the half, we brought on Akinola and he instantly got into the game going forward. A chance came for us on 62 minutes but Coulthirst’s strike was tipped over the bar. Harry Taylor had a chance minutes later but his was saved. On 71 minutes Salford were the ones with the ball in the back of the net but the ref had already blown for handball so we had a free kick and it remained 0-0. We had a couple more chances from Akinola, Taylor and Fonguck and we also did well to keep Salford’s efforts out but the ref blew and the game finished 0-0. I was impressed to read we were only the second team to keep a clean sheet there in the league this season! We walked back to the car but before we could leave Manchester Mum was adamant we had to go to ‘big’ Tesco’s so I was dragged around there for an hour (I did manage to get doughnuts out of it though!) We finally got back on the M62 and were home by 7pm meaning I was able to talk my parents into a Chinese takeaway to top off the day! I was pleased with a point & a good performance and Salford is definitely going up there as one of my favourite away days!
