We will host Crawley Wasps in FA Women’s National League action on Sunday afternoon. What are your thoughts going into the match? “We are expecting a really tough test because they are a very good team that will be well-organised. “Going forwards they have a big attacking threat and have shown that in last weekend’s result.” The Wasps have a few of our former players, so we should know what they are about? “They have three of our former players who are really good players with great personalities. “All three have done really well since making the switch and I believe that Nic Gibson is already off the mark at the Club, scoring against Milton Keynes. “We know the types of players that they are, so we are really excited to play against them.” How are the girls fairing after having no midweek match? You mentioned how pleased you were about the training sessions this week off camera. “This week’s training has been great. We have had a few that were out injured going into the Ipswich Town game.
“We have now got most of the girls back and ready to go for the weekend, so it has been a really positive week.” Despite losing the game, we defended resiliently against Ipswich last weekend which must give us confidence going into this match? “Yes it does. We know that if we can get things right defensively, we know that we have got talent going forwards to cause teams problems. It all has to come from a solid defence. The girls have been absolutely fantastic so far this year in their defensive duties.” We will be playing in front of our home supporters again on Sunday. What impact can they have on the outcome of the result? “We are excited to see them down there again and the girls are always delighted to have people down to watch the matches. “Supporters always have a huge impact on the games as they can change the momentum with the support they give from the stands. “Please come down to The Hive London and cheer us on loudly, as you have been throughout the season so far.”
WHAT’S THE Buzz
WHAT’S THE Buzz The group stage of the UEFA Champions League has been drawn this week, with the two English clubs finding their opponents. Chelsea have been paired with two time winner and three time runners up VfL Wolfsburg, Juventus and Swiss side Servette Chenois in Group A. Arsenal will be competing in Group C alongside Barcelona, 1899 Hoffenheim and Danish side HB Koge Kvindeelite. Group B sees Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid go head to head, alongside Breidablik of Iceland and Zhytlobud 1 Kharkiv. The final group consists of Bayern Munich, 7 time winner Olympique Lyonnais, Benfica, and Swedish side BK Hacken. Sarina Wiegman has said that her England players want to make the fans proud in her first match in charge of the Three Lionesses. She took over from interim boss Hege Riise at the beginning of the month, and faced North Macedonia at St Mary’s, Southampton, on Friday night (before time of writing), and Luxembourg away this Tuesday. The side lost 2-0 to Canada in Stoke and 3-1 to France in Caen in April, and their last victory came in February – 6-0 win over Northern Ireland in Burton in February. Pernille Harder has this week become the all time record scorer of the Denmark national team. The former Vejlby Skovbakken Aarhus, Linkoping and Wolfsburg forward joined current club Chelsea on 1st September 2020. In their 2023 World Cup qualifier match against Malta on Thursday saw her saw score her 66th goal in her 129th appearance, overtaking the 65 scored by Merete Pedersen. Her goal was her sides’ fourth, as they stormed to a 7-0 win.
WHAT’S THE Buzz
It has been revealed that England will be hosting a new invitational tournament this coming February. The round robin competition will pit the Three Lionesses against Germany and Spain, as well as another yet to be confirmed side. The matches will be played across a week, with venues and ticket information yet to be released. This tournament will be taking place at the same time as the SheBelieves Cup, which the Lionesses have played in for the past 5 seasons. This comes in preparation for next summer, when England hosts the Euro 2022 Championships.
The BBC have announced that they will be live broadcasting the Continental League Cup final in March. The group stage of the competition will kick off next month, and will run up until December, with the knockout phases taking place in the new year, before the 5th March finale.
The recent international break saw several notable scores, but arguably the most standout one was the USA’s 9-0 thrashing of Paraguay. The friendly tie took place at the FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns NFL team, in Cleveland, Ohio. Apart from the large scoreline, the game was also notable for Carli Lloyd netting 5 goals
