WRITES
Darren Currie
Good Afternoon all and a very warm welcome back to The Hive London for the final time this season. I’d like to extend that welcome to Neil Smith as well as the players, staff and supporters of Bromley FC. We’re looking to go out on a high in front of our own supporters this afternoon. It’s crucial that we finish this season on a positive note. I want everyone connected to this club to be heading into the summer with optimism, looking forward to a new campaign. It’s our job to make the most of our last home game and make the most of our trip to Havant, aim for 6 points and everyone leaves in a positive frame of mind. Our supporters have been with us every step of the way this season and on behalf of all
the players and my staff, thank you! I want to reward the Bee Army for their devotion, you’ve been with us through thick and thin this campaign, hopefully, there will be even more positives next season. We’ve had quite a few really enjoyable moments this season, but I want next season to be full of them. We’re aiming to make The Hive a fortress and we’ll need you with us every step of the way.
Enjoy the match and #LetsBeeTogether

SKIPPER’S
NOTES
Hello everyone! Welcome back to The Hive for one last time this season as we aim for three points against Bromley. After a few disappointing results in the past week or so, we are all looking to finish this season on a high, starting today before moving on to Sunday at Havant and Waterlooville. It’s been an up and down season, there have been some great highs with the FA Cup run, memories that myself, all the boys and hopefully our supporters will cherish forever. If we are being honest, however, we’re lower than we would like to be in the league, it was never going to be easy and when you are a newly relegated side, you are always there to be shot at. But we have certainly shown at times what we are capable of and we have
given ourselves a good platform upon which to build on. Today’s opposition will come here similarly looking to finish their season positively as they continue to establish themselves as a force at this level.
Enjoy the game and have a very enjoyable summer! Come on you Bees!

BROMLEY FC CLUB HISTORY Established in 1892, Bromley initially played in the South London League, before becoming founder members of the Southern League in 1894, joining Division Two. However, after finishing bottom of Division Two in 1895–96 they left to become founder members of the London League, also joining Division Two. They won the division at the first attempt, and were promoted to Division One. They switched to the Kent League for the 1898–99 season, but after finishing bottom of the league, they returned to Division One of the London League. During the 1899–1900 season the club withdrew from Division One, taking over their reserves’ fixtures in Division Two. They withdrew from Division Two at the end of the 1900–01 season. In 1907 the club were founder members of the Spartan League and went on to become its inaugural champions.[3] They joined the
Isthmian League for the following season, and won back-to-back titles in 1908–09 and 1909–10. In 1910–11 the club won the FA Amateur Cup, beating Bishop Auckland 1–0 in the final. The season also saw them finish seventh in 1910–11, the club returned to the Kent League and were placed in Division One. They remained in the league until World War I, but joined the Athenian League when football resumed in 1919. The club were Athenian League champions in 1922–23. In 1937–38 they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time. After beating King’s Lynn in the first round, they lost 4–1 at Scarborough in the second. They also reached the final of the FA Amateur Cup again, beating Erith & Belvedere 1–0. The club repeated the feat the following season, this time playing Football League opposition for the first time BARNETFC.COM 11
as they lost 8–1 at Lincoln City in the second round. In 1945–46 another second round appearance resulted in a 4–2 aggregate defeat to Watford. In 1947–48 they held Reading to a 1–1 draw in the first round, before losing the replay at Elm Park 3–0. The club won another Athenian League title and the FA Amateur Cup in 1948–49, with the following season seeing another FA first round defeat, this time 2–1 to Watford. In 1950–51 the club won their third Athenian League title; the season also saw them lose 1–0 to Aldershot in the FA Cup first round. Going straight into the first round the following season, they lost 3–2 at Torquay United. In 1952 they rejoined the Isthmian League, and after finishing as runners-up in their first season back in the league, they were champions in 1953–54. They won the league for a fourth time in 1960–61.
OPPOSITION
After finishing bottom of Division One in the 1974–75 season Bromley were relegated to Division Two. In 1976–77 the club appeared in the FA Cup first round for the first time in over twenty years, losing 7–0 at Swindon Town. Division Two became Division One in 1977, and the club were promoted to the Premier Division after finishing as runners-up in 1979–80. They were relegated to Division One again in 1984–85, but returned to the Premier Division as Division One runners-up in 1985–86. Another relegation followed in 1989–90, but was followed by an immediate return to the Premier Division as Division One runners-up in 1990–91. In 1996–97 they qualified for the FA Cup first round again, but were beaten 3–1 at home by Enfield. Bromley were relegated to Division One again at the end of the 1998–99 season. A fourth-place finish in 2004– 05 saw them qualify for the promotion play-offs, and after defeating Metropolitan Police on penalties in the semi-finals, they beat Horsham 3–1 in the final to earn promotion to the Premier Division. In 2006–07 they finished as runnersup in the Premier Division, again qualifying for the promotion play-offs. A 1–0 win over AFC Wimbledon in the semi-finals and a victory against Billericay Town on penalties in the final
saw them promoted to the Conference South. The season had also seen them reach the FA Cup first round again, eventually losing 4–1 at Gillingham. Further appearances in the first round were achieved in 2009–10 (against Colchester United), 2011–12 (Leyton Orient), 2012–13 (Fleetwood Town) and 2014–15 (Dartford), but they were beaten on each occasion. In 2014–15 Bromley won the Conference South, earning promotion to the renamed National League, where they have remained since. Another FA Cup first round appearance in 2017–18 saw them defeated by Rochdale. The season also saw them reach the final of the FA Trophy, where they lost 5–4 on penalties to Brackley Town after the match had ended in a 1–1 draw.
GROUND Hayes Lane is a football stadium in Bromley, Greater London, England. Located between Bromley town centre and Hayes, it is the home of Bromley F.C., and also used by Cray Wanderers and Crystal Palace Ladies. The current capacity of the ground is 5,000, of which 1,300 is seated and 2,500 covered.
BARNETFC.COM 12
Bromley moved to Hayes Lane in 1938 from their previous ground, also on the same road. It initially featured a 2,500seat stand on one side of the pitch, with the remainder of the pitch surrounded by banking. The ground was opened by Stanley Rous on 3 September 1938, with Walthamstow Avenue winning 6–1. The record attendance at the ground of 10,798 was set on 24 September 1948 for a friendly game between Bromley and a Nigeria XI. Floodlights were installed in 1960, and were formally switched on for a game between Japan and an Isthmian League XI on 27 September. The banking was later replaced by concrete terracing, with both ends of the pitch later covered. The original stand burned down in October 1992, and was replaced by a much smaller 320-seat stand, which was opened the following year. Seats obtained from the London Aquatics Centre were installed behind one goal to meet ground grading regulations after promotion to the National League. In April 2017, the club announced that work would begin on construction of a 1,450-seat stand at the south end of the ground, and that the playing surface would be converted from grass to 3G.

David Gregory signed for Bromley in the Summer of 2017, following his departure from Cambridge United.
Manager Neil Smith welcomed midfielder Frankie Sutherland to Hayes Lane at the beginning of the 2017/18 season. After a successful first year, fans’ favourite Sutherland committed his future to the Club for the 2018/19 campaign. Sutherland is part of a midfield duo, alongside his name sake Frankie Raymond, and has this season taken on the role as penalty taker.
Gregory began his career at Crystal Palace where he spent over eleven years with the Eagles which included a loan spell with Leyton Orient. Following his release from Crystal Palace he went on to join Cambridge United were he linked up with former Crystal Palace favourite and manager Shaun Derry.
At the time of re-signing Neil added, “Frankie got better and better throughout last season, and he had a great partnership with Frankie Raymond. Again, he’s the type of player who can help us move on and progress next season.”

Former Premier League Captain Roger Johnson first signed for the Ravens back in October 2017 and made his first appearance in a goalless draw against Dover Athletic in the FA Cup. The former Cardiff City, Birmingham City and Wolves central defender became a stalwart in the Bromley back line last season and will continue to provide guidance to the younger members of the squad alongside the management team.
Fan favourite Jack Holland, started his footballing career with Bromley Youth Section before being scouted by Crystal Palace, where he went on to spend four years with the Eagles. Holland returned to Bromley permanently in 2013 and since then has gone on to make over 200 appearances for The Ravens. Manager Neil Smith said, “I’m absolutely delighted with this news, Jack has been and continues to be a fantastic captain, he’s been here a long time and has shown great loyalty to the club and I’m delighted his hard work and endeavour has been rewarded. It’s exciting times both on and off the pitch and I believe the two-year contract shows a great statement of intent from the Club.”
Manager Neil Smith was pleased to keep the former Premier League man back at Bromley; “Roger came in at a difficult time last year, but his experience is immense and it really helped us, especially getting to the 1st Round of the FA Cup and the Final of the FA Trophy. With a relatively young squad, it’s important to have someone like Roger around and he’s always a pleasure to work with. The players have and will continue to learn from him.”

Richard Brindley has extended his stay with the Club in October 2018, signing a deal following an impressive short term spell.
The 25 year old Greenwichborn forward began his career in the ranks of local sides Sevenoaks Town and even Hayes Lane tenants Cray Wanderers, before making the move to Newcastle United.
The former Rotherham United man, who has represented the Ravens at right back on two occasions, has impressed Neil Smith enough to earn a deal.
After spending time at Workington and Darlington on loan, Hooper joined Northampton Town, from where he embarked on loan stints at Alfreton Town and Farnborough, where he scored against Bromley back in the 2013-14 season.
Upon signing, Brindley commented; “I feel really happy. I’m glad to come here and have the opportunity to play my football, and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead. The manager and the chairman have been brilliant with me, and spoke to me after my first week of training about sorting out something longer term. It’s a really good set up here.”
After leaving Northampton, he made the step back into non-league football, linking up with Lee Bradbury at Havant & Waterlooville. After a successful season, which saw him score 14 goals in all competitions, Hooper was on the radar of Football League clubs, and signed for League One outfit Port Vale.

Wood will be fondly remembered by many a Ravens supporter, for his spell with the Club between 2005-2008, where he amassed over 150 appearances, scoring 21 times. After starting out his footballing career in the youth ranks of Hayes Lane tenants Cray Wanderers, where he progressed through to the first team in 2002. Marc-Anthony is no stranger to Hayes Lane, having progressed through the Bromley youth section from Under 9’s through to the academy. Prior to his solitary season at Braintree Town, Okoye had lined up for the likes of Erith & Belvedere, Dulwich Hamlet and Merstham.

Alongside David Gregory and captain Jack Holland, Jordan Higgs also put pen to paper on a new deal for the 2018/19 season. The 21 year old, who has played in numerous positions this season and cemented a regular place in the team throughout the campaign, is a product of the club’s academy, and has been coached by Manager Neil Smith for a number of years.
The midfielder became Neil Smith’s ninth summer signing in July 2017 joining from Dagenham & Redbridge. Raymond began his career at Reading in the youth set up, and following his release in 2012 went on to sign for Gillingham on a short term basis before joining Eastbourne Borough where he went on to make over sixty appearances for The Sports. In 2014 he was signed by Dagenham & Redbridge for an undisclosed fee, and was then loaned back to Eastbourne Borough for the remainder of the season. Following his return to The Daggers, Frankie went on to make over forty eight appearances for the club until his release at the end of the 16/17 season.
Higgs was understandably delighted to extend his stay at the club he has represented since the age of 13, and commented “I’m happy to have signed again and be a part of the journey this club is on. Alan Dunne signed for the Club in January 2017. Alan spent nearly all of his career at Millwall, joining the Lions at the age of eight and progressed through the Millwall Academy before making his debut first-team appearance on 19th March 2002. The defender spent twenty three years at the Club making almost 400 appearances for the Lions. After spending one and a half seasons at the Club as a player, he was added to Neil Smith’s backroom team as First Team Player-Coach. Upon starting his new role, Dunne commented; “I’m really pleased. The 24 year old began his career in his native Germany, where he was on the books as a youth player at 1860 Munich. At 16 years of age, Bugiel moved to England, where he became part of the youth team at Chichester City. NEIL SMITH MANAGER
Smith started his career at Tottenham Hotspur as an apprentice but after a year had failed to break through to the team. He went on loan to Gillingham and then signed for them permanently in 1991, going on to make over 200 appearances. During his time at the Gills in 1995, Smith was on the verge of a move to then Division Two club Brentford. However, when the fee was set at £50,000 by a tribunal, then Brentford manager David Webb felt he could find better value elsewhere, hence the deal fell through and Smith remained at Gillingham for two more seasons. He moved to Fulham in 1997 for two seasons, making 75 appearances and scoring two goals. He scored once against Colchester in the league and also scored against former club Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup, before joining Reading, where he made some 65 appearances in a three-year spell. He was part of promotion-winning sides at Gillingham, Fulham and Reading. Smith briefly joined Stevenage Borough in 2002 before Glenn Cockerill bought him to Woking where he played a vital part in the escape from relegation that season. He made 180 appearances for Woking and had a short spell as caretaker manager before being released in 2007. He signed for Bromley in 2008 before calling time on his playing career. On 19 July 2008, Kingfield hosted a benefit game for Smith to celebrate the six years he spent at Woking. Smith joined Isthmian League Premier Division club Maidstone United as a player on 18 October 2008 following his release from the coaching staff at financially troubled Grays Athletic. He made his debut in the FA Trophy 1st qualifying round tie against AFC Hornchurch. Managerial career Smith was appointed joint caretaker manager of Woking in March 2007 with Graham Baker following the departure of Glenn Cockerill, helping the club to stay in the Conference National. On 4 May 2007, after failing to get the job full-time, Smith was released by Woking following the appointment of Frank Gray as manager. Two weeks later Smith was appointed as the new manager of Conference South team Welling United following the departure of Adrian Pennock to Stoke City. He held the job until 7 January 2008, when he was sacked. Shortly after this he signed for Bromley as a player. Smith joined Grays Athletic as part of their coaching staff on 21 February 2008. He then joined Tim O’Shea, with whom he worked with at Grays, at Croydon Athletic as a coach and again followed O’Shea to Lewes as his assistant. Following Lewes’s relegation he re-joined Bromley at the start of 2011–12 as part of the coaching staff. Following the departure of Mark Goldberg in February 2016, Smith took over the role on an interim basis. On 4 April, after a successful run of games, Smith signed a two-year contract to become the club’s new first team manager.

1948/49 Bromley achieved the Athenian League title, Amateur Cup and Kent Amateur Cup ‘treble’ in 1948/49. The Lillywhites won 18 of their 26 Athenian League games, slamming seven goals past Leyton, Redhill and Wealdstone as they won the title by a four point margin. England Amateur international centre-forward George Brown scored a record 100 goals that season. Bromley beat Maidenhead United 3-0, Wimbledon 6-1, Barking 5-1, Pegasus 4-3 and Leytonstone 2-0 in the Amateur Cup before Tommy Hopper’s first-half goal defeated Romford 1-0 in the first Wembley final. They trounced Thameside Amateurs 9-1 in the Kent Amateur Cup final.
1950/51 Bromley won the Athenian League title, London Senior Cup and Kent Amateur Cup ‘treble’ in 1950/51. They won 24 of their 30 Athenian League games, scoring 13 goals in their two wins over Cambridge City, also hammering Finchley 7-1, Redhill 6-0 and Hitchin Town 6-1. The Lillywhites finished four points clear of runners-up Walton & Hersham. They beat Hendon 4-3 in the London Senior Cup final at Highbury and Tunbridge Wells 3-0 in the Kent Amateur Cup final but lost 2-1 to Snowdon CW in the Kent Senior Cup final replay. 1953/54 Bromley won the Athenian League by a six point margin in 1953/54. The Lillywhites romped to an 8-0 victory over Barking and 7-1 win at home to Romford, winning 18 of their 28 games and scoring 76 goals in the process. A crowd of almost 8,000 watched Bromley beat Maidstone United 2-0 in the Kent Amateur Cup final on Easter Monday, just three days after they defeated the highly regarded Yorkshire Amateurs 2-0 in a Good Friday friendly match at Hayes Lane. They lost 4-3 at home to Tooting & Mitcham in the South Thames Cup semi-final replay. George Brown announced his retirement at the end of the season and became trainer.
1960/61 Bromley won the Isthmian League title for the first time in fifty years in 1960/61. The first floodlit match at Hayes Lane saw an Isthmian League XI beat the Japanese national team 6-1 in September. Eric Nottage headed a last-gasp winner at Dulwich Hamlet the following month and Bromley lost only four of their 30 Isthmian League games as they clinched the title in dramatic fashion on the last day of the season. The Lillywhites won 4-2 at home to St Albans City to pip Walthamstow Avenue by one point. They also reached the South Thames Cup final, losing 5-2 to Wimbledon, as well as the Kent Amateur Cup final, losing 1-0 to Maidstone United.
1977/78 Bromley narrowly failed to win promotion in 1977/78. John Biddle’s side were unbeaten in their opening 15 Isthmian League First Division games and went top of the table after hammering Ware 4-1 in October. They remained in the promotion race but lost pole position after dropping points during the closing weeks, including a 1-1 draw at home to Finchley, 3-1 defeat at Chesham, 4-0 defeat by Ilford and 0-0 draw with Hampton. These proved costly as Oxford City edged above Bromley to finish runners-up behind champions Dulwich Hamlet. They lost their grip on the Kent Senior Cup, beaten by Maidstone United after extra-time in a first round replay.

The manager’s son Bradley Goldberg returned to Bromley initially on loan from Dagenham & Redbridge.

ALEX JONES
ALEX JONES DIGRESSES CRAY WANDERERS TRUE FAITH I have never seen Bromley play. Instead, I ventured to Hayes Lane to see a 0-0 thriller between Cray Wanderers and Hendon. A horrible game, but I cheered myself up at half-time by reading the programme of a recent FA Cup tie involving Bromley, the matchday magazines having been scattered on the tables of the Bromley bar. Ironically there is a second Cray, the Reservoir is roughly eight miles away from me and now apparently feeds the taps of the Swansea Valley and Wales’s second city, who will almost certainly entertain Cardiff next season in the Championship.
Ceremony Champions Reunited Congratulations Pete Williamson and Janet Matthewson for raising lots of money at the reunion. I have heard plenty of positive reviews. The Young Barnet Foundation benefited from the event with Giuliano Grazioli and Tom Watt presiding over proceedings. Kirsty Smilie described the party as “taking you back fourteen years in the blink of an eye”. Ismael Yakubu, Paul Fairclough and Anthony Charles were amongst those in attendance.
Bruno Andrade blue Monday Sometimes my students go onto greater things, with occasionally the odd one
falling by the wayside and having to do time at Her Majesty’s Pleasure. So I can proudly report that Bruno will be a League One player next season, along with Big John Akinde, following the promotion of Lincoln City. Some of the highlights of Bruno’s career so far include a few Premiership appearances as a substitute for QPR, scoring at Wembley for Boreham Wood last season, and, chiefly, winning the last ever penalty given at Underhill. As I have often recalled, the instruction “Don’t cut through the middle Brune or the big centre half will flatten you” seemed to allude the lad as an elevenyear-old, but good luck to Andrade the Imp.
Regret This season for me closely mirrors that of Swansea City, once again my local side these days, with an impressive Cup run eclipsing and perhaps temporarily distracting from League form. In the end, the Bees and the Swans did not meet, as the draw would have allowed and will finish in approximately the same lower table position. In the Vanarama National League, the bottom four have been more or less known for a good month now and the BBC and other media can officially write R next to Braintree, Maidstone, Havant and Waterlooville, and Aldershot. Obviously, these are all Southern sides, which may lead to a realignment of the teams in the League below. Perhaps Leyton Orient will re-join the Football League and, as I write Wrexham still have ambitions of doing the same. The complicated playoff system these days gives
BARNETFC.COM 26
an opportunity to seventh-placed sides, not sure that I feel entirely comfortable with that.
World In Motion There is an obvious link to the titles of these paragraphs, which gives me the opportunity to repeat the story of how Mr David Bloomfield when he worked for the FA, provided the link with New Order, when the chart-topper was recorded, and a Gold disc sits proudly chez Bloomfield on his wall. Without whom there would never have been the John Barnes rap when we were encouraged to go “round the back”. I informed our Mags of how I danced to World in Motion at Finsbury Park in the Nineties when New Order performed, and Hooky was still talking to the rest of the band. Now I’m never going to dance again and Guilty feet have got no rhythm. I told that story immediately before England began their World Cup campaign last summer, and Panama were despatched 6-1. All disrespect to the American team obviously, but that was really as bad a side as I have ever seen at a major finals. This summer there is a longer break, and Barnet will return in August, refreshed with hopefully, a chance for Darren Currie to build on his progress this season Goodbye everyone, thank you, you’ve been a lovely audience, drive safely.

MATCH REPORT
A first half wonder-volley from Danny Rowe was the difference as the Bees, despite a good performance and playing with 10-men for the majority of the match, lose Barnet started brightly and had a chance to take the lead just three minutes in, Shaq Coulthirst knocking the ball down for Jack Taylor to strike but his effort hit skipper Callum Reynolds and went over the bar.
Johnson who headed it down but there was noone in a Barnet shirt gambling to get a touch. As the Bees searched late on for what would’ve been a deserved equaliser, Mason-Clark delivered a good ball through to Akinola who had a shot saved but he was flagged just offside.
Ephron Mason-Clark fired narrowly wide of the post before Jack Taylor had an effort blocked as the Bees ramped up the pressure. However, with their first chance of the match, Danny Row smashed home a perfect low volley from 25 yards out, firing it into the bottom left to give the hosts the lead. Barnet certainly weren’t out of it however, Dan Sweeney heading and Elliott Johnson free kick inches wide. Coulthirst had an effort saved by Jay Lynch before a major turning point in the match 35 minutes in. Sweeney was given a straight red card for a tackle in the midfield that is often seen as a yellow in most games. Jack Taylor had a volley blocked by Crawford shortly before the break. Fylde started the second half the stronger, Haughton, Bradley and Rowe all having changes cut out and well dealt with by a resilient Barnet defence. It was one way traffic for much of the second half, but the hosts failed to create many clear cut chances, whereas substitute Simeon Akinola fired wide of goal for Barnet. Haughton curled an effort destined for the top left corner but it was well saved by Mark Cousins prior to Danny Philliskirk’s header being cleared from under the crossbar by Jack Taylor. With less than 10 minutes to play, Cheye Alexander produced a good cross into Elliott

TAKING THE
TAKING THE MIC
SO WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED TODAY, CHILDREN? What a long, strange trip it’s been.
Those were the final words said on the tannoy at Underhill, and they also seem the appropriate words with which to round off this season’s column. So what are some of the things we have learned across the last 29 issues? For those of you reading this column for the first time, none of the below will make any sense. For those of you resolute enough to have gone the distance, it may make just a little. Still, here goes….. That it ain’t easy the first time you try to say “Nesiasi Mataitonga”, Olarenwaju Kayode” or even “Giuliano Grazioli”. Go ahead; YOU try it.
That you should always be wary when someone lets you park in his drive. That you never know when Tyler Swift or Ollie Murs are lurking just around the corner. You have been warned. That if you REALLY need a Dog to save you from relegation, you go to Bryn. That there isn’t enough fun in Football, although there are still some great exceptions to that rule. Welcome to the stage: Bedale AFC and their Hotdog strip. That when a sign says “Wet Paint”, it means “Wet Paint”.
That Barnet can be connected to Joy Division in two moves, and to World Cup anthem “World in Motion” in just one. It’s true.
That Football isn’t coming home because it never left. The true World Cup resides not in a swanky trophy cabinet in Paris but in a former mining village in the North-East.
Hopefully, that “taking what you do seriously” and “taking yourself seriously” are two very different propositions.
That moments of true glory mean more when they occur infrequently – and when they do, we should savour EVERY moment of the celebration.
That you don’t need to have true talent – just an ability to be in the right place at the right time – to earn your fifteen minutes of fame. Step forward, Jimmy Glass.
That the legend and facts of the Christmas Day Truce Game may differ, but their message remains the same.
That Telford United do not play in Somerset, and that you should always double-check the advertised kick-off time before heading anywhere. That the Law of the Groundhopper knows no bounds. Beware!
And, finally, that Football – and life – is less about winning, and more about the taking part. God bless the Fort. It has indeed been a long, strange trip. Have a great summer, everyone!

Despite an early goal from Medy Elito and a penalty save from Mark Cousins, Barnet’s unbeaten run came to an end at Maidstone after second half strikes from Justin Amaluzor and Rob Swaine. Barnet had made the perfect start, breaking the deadlock after just 50 seconds.
maintain the Bees advantage. Just after the restart, Barnet’s 693 minute long run without conceding came to an end when former Bee Amaluzor finished at the far post.
Medy Elito picked up the ball from a throw in and was almost invited to shoot by the Maidstone defence, an invitation he duly took up, firing into the top right corner from the edge of the box.
In a half of few chances, Maidstone took the lead when Rob Swaine lost his marker from a Powell free kick and headed past Cousins.
Barnet looked to create more chances, Elito looking to double his tally for the evening, cutting back onto his right foot before clipping it over the keeper but just over the bar.
With less than 10 minutes to go, Antonis Vasiliou came on for his senior debut and became the latest in a long line of BFC Academy talents to be given a chance in the first team.
Powell had a free kick saved by Cousins midway through the first period in a game that soon settled down after a frantic start.
Soon after stepping on, he teed up fellow substitute Simeon Akinola who angled a shot looking for the bottom corner but it went agonisingly wide of the mark.
Just before the half time whistle, Maidstone led a counter from a Barnet free kick and it resulted in Justin Amaluzor being fouled in the penalty area by Dan Sweeney.
Maidstone would hold on for all three points and end Barnet’s 8-match unbeaten streak.
Blair Turgott stepped up but Mark Cousins guessed correctly and pulled off a good save to

ERIC BEER
ERIC BEER A FAMILY AFFAIR
A few weeks back the club received a lovely E Mail from Nigel Beer whose Father Eric played for Barnet just before the outbreak of World War 2. In that Barnet team of course would have been legends Dennis Kelleher and Lester Finch.
scored another three goals too and one of those games was a 4-2 win over today’s opponents Bromley. Makes you wonder what would have happened had the war not intervened?
Eric was a prolific goalscorer for Mid Herts League side Barnet United in the 1930’s and the club would often delve into their ranks for reserve players. Eric it seems was rather better than most and scored three times in three games in the Autumn of 1939 before hostilities broke out and decimated competitive football matches, at least for a while.
Consulting the record books from that FA Amateur Cup winning season the Barnet forward line – and there were five in those days - was Jordan (right wing), Kelleher (inside right), Phipps (centre forward), Finch (inside left) and Reilly (left wing), arguably our greatest ever.
Eric was called upon again just after the war and played two more games in April 1946 as cover for the injured regular Centre Forward Ron Phipps. Eric actually
Nigel is a Bromley fan and will be at the game today, we welcome him and hope he has a great day out.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
WHAT’S THE BUZZ JOSH PALMER Gary Johnson, the manager of National League South side Torquay United, has revealed that he is “absolutely ecstatic” after his side sealed promotion last week. The side were relegated from the National League Premier last season, thanks to a 22nd place finish, but have now been promoted back at their first attempt. The Gulls finalised the league title last weekend, after a 2-0 win over Eastbourne Borough at Plainmoor, a result which left them 10 points clear of second placed Woking, with just three games remaining, meaning that they cannot be caught up. The side were relegated from League 2 in 2014, before making a series of lower mid table finishes in the National League. Matthew McCarthy, a director of Bury, has publicly apologised for the off field issues that have surrounded the club, which have resulted in several problems, including many players and staff having not been paid for March. The salaries for last month were due to be paid on Friday 29th, are still yet to be paid, with the club having seen a High Court appearance for some unpaid tax held off until the end of the season. The League 2 club’s situation has been labelled “extremely concerning” by the EFL at a meeting last week. “It’s a really unfortunate thing but we’re trying to get it all sorted” said McCarthy “I want to apologise from the bottom of my heart for the problems that players and staff have had. No-one should have to go through that. If the club gets promoted, that’s one little tick that’s massive for the future. The staff and everyone here are doing everything they can to help the players do that”.
League 2 strugglers Notts County have placed indefinite bans on several of their fans, after the club reported their abuse online to police. The club, their players and largely their owner Alan Hardy have all been subjugated to heavy criticisms this season as the League 2 club have suffered financially as well as being in serious trouble of being relegated from the Football League for the first time in their history. In a statement, the club said that some comments online did “overstep the line between fair criticism and vile, threatening abuse”. The club have started formal proceedings into the case, where “the protagonists” have been banned from the club for the foreseeable future. The club have also stated that they have reported one “particularly malicious tweet” to Nottinghamshire Police for further investigations.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
MK Dons have expressed how appalled they are after player Chuks Aneke was subjected to a racist social media post last Sunday. The post in question, was post posted by a Tranmere Rovers fan the day after the side defeated the Dons 2-1 at Prenton Park. Aneke played t he full game but didn’t score. The post, on Instagram, included a picture of the forward being compare to a monkey, which Tranmere have said that they have referred to police. The club have also made a vow to enforce bans on any of their fans if they are involved. The Buckinghamshire side also described the post as abuse, going on to say that it is “totally disgusting and unacceptable”.
A fee of £56,000 is set to be refunded to Scunthorpe United by North Lincolnshire Council, after failed to respond to the League 1 sides’ new stadium plans in time. It has been revealed that the council should have made their decision by November, but it is now 5 months overdue. “The club is in no mood to celebrate the fee announcement, given the circumstances and exasperation which has caused the club to engage its solicitors to recover that fee” said the Iron chairman Peter Swann. “The new stadium is vital to securing the longterm financial viability of Scunthorpe United and the council’s ongoing delay to our application is jeopardising this”.
“League One was a million miles away not so long ago” said Lincoln City manager Danny Cowley, after his side won promotion to League 1 last weekend. The side, whose squad includes former Bees Josh Vickers and John Akinde drew 1-1 with Cheltenham Town at Sincil Bank to secure at least an automatic promotion spot, having only won the National League title in 2017. “We’re obviously delighted to have won promotion. I’ve been sick and tired of having that conversation all week with people, (having to say) ‘We haven’t done it yet we’ve still got a bit to do’” Cowley continued. “For us to beat the club record of 19 games unbeaten and get promoted, it’s been a project all season we’ve been working towards but ultimately it’s been a lifetime’s work”. The Imps last competed in the third tier of English football back in the 1998/99 season, but were relegated down after finishing in 23rd place.
A formal complaint has been made to the EFL and the FA by Barnsley, after an incident involving club manager Daniel Stendel and Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton. “The new stadium is vital to securing the longterm financial viability of Scunthorpe United and the council’s ongoing delay to our application is jeopardising this. The League 1 club are working with South Yorkshire Police and assisting with the enquiries into the incident. Tykes’ player Cauley Woodrow posted on his Twitter account that former Manchester City, Newcastle United and QPR player Barton, 36, had “physically assaulted” Stendel in the tunnel after his side lost 4-2 to the hosts at Oakwell last weekend. BARNETFC.COM 44
Last week the FA unveiled the second of their three phases of restructuring for the non league pyramid. Before the first phase was put into force at the start of this season, the non league system was not even, with there being an unlevel amount of leagues and clubs at many levels below the National League, but the FA is attempting to change and correct this. Previously, the system of leagues was in the order 1, 2, 3, 6, 14, 19. Last summer’s restructure saw the system changed to 1,2, 4, 7, 14, 19. This new stage, set to come in for the 2020/21 season, will see an eighth division at step 4, as currently some clubs from the Peterborough region are being forced to play in divisions with clubs from the far north east. New divisions will also be added at steps 5, 6 and 7, which will even out the pyramid to help with promotions and relegations as well as reducing travelling times. The next phase was unveiled last week at Wembley Stadium.
WHAT’S THE BUZZ
Last week saw the Herts Senior Cup final participants confirmed, as Boreham Wood claimed their place thanks to a 2-0 home win over Cheshunt at Meadow Park. The Wood will now face St Albans City of the National League South in the final, after they defeated Watford 3-2 on penalties, after a 1-1 draw after normal time back in February. The final is set to take place this Wednesday night, 24th April, with a kick off time of 19.45 at Meadow Park. The Wood won the trophy last season, as well as the 2014 final. They also lost the 2015 and 2016 finals to Hemel Hempstead Town and Hitchin Town respectively. Barnet remain the most successful club in the competition, with 19 victories and 5 final losses.
The two new stands at Harrogate Town’s CNG Stadium that have been built over the course of the season are set to be opened today, at their last home game of the season against Gateshead. A new terrace at the 1919 Venue end of the ground as well as a new stand next to the Greene King IPA Family Stand have been built at the ground, and are due to be opened today. The new stands take the ground up to Football League level, so that it now meets the criteria. The decision to build the new stands was to allow the club to gain promotion to League 2, as without it, they would be denied promotion, even if they finish top of the league or win the playoffs. The sides currently sit in 6th place going into the Easter weekend (at the time of writing), 5 points off of the top team outside the playoffs with 3 games remaining. We would like to thank everyone who has worked on the new stands over the past months, as well as our supporters for their patience in waiting for the stands to be completed” said a club statement.

FYLDE AWAY POSTCARD Due to my parents seeing a show in Salford on Thursday night, that’s where we were setting off from to see our good Friday football in Fylde. Due to it being a lovely sunny day, we left Salford around 11am with a plan to stop off at Southport en route. After a bit of traffic along the way, we arrived at the seafront around 1pm with just enough to time to enjoy our ice cream and see the sea! We set off to Fylde but unfortunately traffic was bad all the way there too and with time ticking away, I started to wonder if we were even going to make it in time! Thankfully, we pulled into their car park at 2:55 and grabbed our tickets before going into the ground. The teams were a few minutes late too so I was on the terrace as the teams came out. Just 3 minutes into the game we looked certain of scoring through Jack Taylor but somehow it was unluckily Callum Reynolds who blocked the shot! Mason-Clark and Jack Taylor both went forward again but on 21 minutes it was Fylde who went ahead scoring a great volley for 25 yards out. This gave Fylde the confidence to push on and they continued to have efforts going forward. On 35 minutes things got worse when Dan Sweeney was shown a red card for a late challenge (it definitely should’ve been a yellow) reducing us to 10 men going into half time. Since all I had eaten all day was an ice cream, I was thrilled to see Fylde were serving one of my favourite meals, chips and gravy which went down a treat whilst sat in the sun. The boys came back out and the second half was underway. Fylde started the half strongly having a number of chances going forward. It was clear we weren’t giving up as we brought on Robson and Akinola, then soon after Tarpey to try and help our efforts for a goal. We were having more of the ball going forward but nothing came of it and our defence were doing a good job of keeping out Fylde’s attacks down the other end. On 88 minutes, we had a great chance from Akinola but his shot was saved and he was offside. Soon after, the ref blew and the game finished 1-0 to Fylde. We set off back up to Leeds having a nice drive through the countryside and were back home by 7:30 giving me a chance to go out and enjoy the bank holiday weekend! It was a disappointing loss but I hope we can finish our two remaining games on a more positive note.

THE RECKLESS GUIDE
Reckless Guide Havant & Waterlooville
27 • 04 • 2019 - KICK OFF: 12:30PM
LOCATION: WESTLEIGH PARK, MARTIN RD, HAVANT, HAMPSHIRE, PO9 5TH
CAR PARKING
KEY PERSONNEL
There is a small car park at the ground, otherwise plenty of street parking is to be found.
The Hawks manager is Caulkhead (someone from the Isle of Wight) Lee Bradbury. The much travelled Lee played over 500 professional games for the likes of Portsmouth, Manchester City, Crystal Palace Bournemouth and Oxford United. In January 2011 he was appointed manager at Bournemouth after the departure of Eddie Howe. After a rather - on the face of it - unfair dismissal even after getting the Cherries to the Play offs in 2012 he joined Havant shortly afterwards and has been there ever since.
DIRECTIONS BY TRAIN Havant station is just over a mile (20 minutes walk) away served by London Waterloo. Eating and Drinking Locally At the ground you will find the Westleigh Social Club, entrance is behind the main stand, away fans are made welcome. The Heron Pub is close to the ground and part of the Hungry Horse chain. Close to the station is Wetherspoons Parchment Makers or the Robin Hood which is recommended by my spies. The Old House at Home on South Street about 10 minutes walk from the station south is the Reckless recommendation.
BRIEF DIRECTIONS BY ROAD M25 to junction 10 and onto the A3, head south until the road becomes the A3(M). Take the B2149 which is signposted to Havant and Horendean. At the top of the junction slip road turn left and onto a roundabout and turn right towards Rowlans Castle. After a couple of miles at a double roundabout, go straight over the first and right at the second. You will then reach a dual carriageway and at the first set of traffic lights turn left into Bartons Road. You will see the ground to your right but proceed up the hill turning right into Martin Road. The ground entrance will be on your right.
The nearest McDonalds is hopefully in Weymouth! The ground catering is reasonably priced and offers burgers, dogs and chips with the usual range of hot and cold drinks.

GROUND DESCRIPTION
OVERNIGHT STAY FACTOR
The main stand has room for around 570, with both ends covered with similar terraces to

that at the South end of the Hive. Opposite the main stand is another covered terrace which runs the full length of the pitch.
CELEBRITY WATCH 1960’s wizard dribbling ladies man of Chelsea and England fame, Bobby Tambling started his career at Havant and was apparently a target for Barnet at one time, we couldn’t afford his wages! Whilst Waterlooville’s greatest son is probably the much travelled striker Guy Whittingham. Bees fans will remember him from a certain 5-0 FA Cup mauling by Portsmouth at Underhill - enough said.
OUR LAST MEETING & MEMORIES The existing club is the result of a merger between Havant Town and Waterlooville in June 1998. Waterlooville sold their Jubilee Park ground and the new club set up shop at a rejuvenated and revamped Havant ground. Some while ago a thread on the Club Messageboard threw up a question as to the behaviour of some Barnet fans at a Southern League game in New Year 1977 versus Waterlooville involving a toilet seat (1-0 to Barnet the result).
Fred Dineage, the TV personality famous for hosting the kids know all show ‘How’ and ghost wring a book on the Kray Twins apparently comes from the area. I seem to remember him as an ITV football reporter who got lumbered with the matches in the trifling South West region that most of the country didn’t give a flying Roger Figg about.
I can recall that day but more vividly for standing outside Waterloovile’s old Jubilee ground in a monsoon and waiting for the referee to actually confirm the game was on. The Barnet fans sung defiantly throughout the game huddled together under a little shed with a leaking roof on the halfway line. Those are the sort of days when you try to imagine what it must be like to have a season ticket at Southburied Road.
Timothy “Tiff” Needell the racing driver was born here as was gorgeous actress Susannah Fielding.
A WORD FROM RECKLESS
Our only visit here was in October 2001 in an FA Cup 4th Qualifying game which finished 1-1 thanks to a Wayne Puser goal. The replay at Underhill was a comfortable 3-1 victory with Wayne scoring his hatrick within 4 minutes!
I would like to thank everybody who has thanked me for compiling these guides, and hope they have been of some use and haven’t got any body lost or in trouble? Have a great Summer,
