SIAN OSMOND
HEAD COACH SIAN OSMOND
SIAN OSMOND
Sian, after having a full week to prepare for this Sunday, how is the squad looking? “We were disappointed coming by the Gillingham result, but we have had a good week in training and the players have been working really hard.” “The players have definitely picked themselves back up to refocus and it is nice to have a proper run into the game. “It was tough having three fixtures in seven days last week, but we have come through it well and are ready for this Sunday.” Having won the first three games of the year and then lost against Gillingham, do you think it might affect our momentum at all? “I do not think so because the players were still confident in the possession they had in the Gillingham game. We just did not convert our chances. “It was a disappointing one, but we are going to use it as motivation to make sure we put things right on Sunday. “We want to continue with the performances we have been putting in and hopefully we can get a result against Cardiff.” We have Cardiff at home this Sunday who are team we have already played this season. What sort of match are you expecting? “It is going to be another tough game because they have won their last two fixtures and will come here with confidence. “They have some good individual players and have some pace in wide areas that we need to be wary of. “We will relish the challenges and the opportunity to show them what we are all about.” What will we be taking from the first three games this year so that we can return to winning ways? “I think we have had lots of different performances so far. “There were certain games where we dominated large portions of possession. “We were clinical in some games and there was some really good defensive work in others. “We have shown glimpses of great work in certain areas of our game since January and it is just about trying to put it
together at once. “I think if we can go and dominate possession as we have been, along with some solid defensive work, then we can cause any team in this league problems.” You mentioned at the start of January that it was a chance to pick up some positive results and we did. What are you expecting from February? “February is going to be a completely different and we have got some really tough opponents coming up. “It is a huge opportunity for us to show what we are about and put a resilient performance in. “We still have to play against Oxford and Bridgewater who are really top sides within this league. “If we want to continue moving forward, and pushing ourselves up the league, these are the sorts of teams that we have to go and compete against.” With the signing of Dan Carlton recently, what do you think that does in terms of competition for places and do you think that it could give the players a real lift? “I think it is definitely something that is starting to creep in, with players now feeling that there is a genuine competition for every place on the pitch. “The players have engaged with the off-field work that we do with our backroom team, as well as the performance video analysis. “We have really seen a change within the culture of the team that they are really looking to better themselves in any way possible. “They have bought into the additional work we have provided them off the field as well. “It is a good feeling around the camp that we are pushing ourselves as hard as we can to be better.” Sabiha Jamal departed the club recently and she goes with our best wishes? “Yes, she was absolutely fantastic and was a really hardworking individual. “She is a good player with a great character and we wish her luck for the future moving forward.”
WHAT’S THE Buzz
WHAT’S THE Buzz Sarina Weigman, the manager of the England national team, has said that she welcomes the changes in WSL and women’s football contract policy relating to maternity provisions. This new policy, mainly affecting the WSL and Championship, sees players entitled to 14 weeks of maternity leave with 100% of their regular wages, as well as any additional remuneration, before moving to the applicable statutory rate.
The draw for the Fifth Round of the FA Cup has been made, following the conclusion of the Fourth Round last weekend. The tie of the round is undoubtedly Manchester United vs Manchester City, with Championship side Liverpool hosting Arsenal. There is guaranteed to be at least one National League side into the quarter finals with Ipswich Town hosting Southampton FC, and West Bromwich Albion hosting West Midlands rivals Coventry United of the Championship. Other ties include Charlton Athletic vs Everton, Durham vs Birmingham City, Reading vs West Ham United and Chelsea vs Leicester City.
Karna Solskjaer, the daughter of former Manchester United player and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has made her debut for the club’s women’s team, thus becoming the first father daughter pair to play for the club. The 19-year-old came off the bench away at Bridgwater United in the FA Cup last weekend in the 85th minute, with the side winning 2-0. Her father watched the match, despite being sacked by the club several weeks ago.
WHAT’S THE Buzz
Julie Blakstad has this week signed for Manchester City. The Norway International signs from Rosenborg on a two-and-a-halfyear deal, on her first time playing outside of her home country. The 20-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee and will wear the number 41 shirt. She scored 17 times in 35 games since starting in the first team in 2020. Another big WSL transfer this week was made by Aston Villa, who snapped up Scotland captain Rachel Corsie. Corsie joins after three-and-a-half-years in the USA with Kansas City Current in the NWSL, marking Villa’s third signing of the window. She started out her career in Scotland with Aberdeen and Glasgow City, before a first spell in England with Notts County. The 32-year-old then moved to the USA in 2015 with Seattle Reign, before moving to Utah Royals, via a loan return to Glasgow. Royals then loaned her to Canberra United in Australia and Birmingham City.
Jean Luc Vasseur has been sacked by Everton after just 10 games in charge. He leaves the side in 10th place in the WSL, having won just one of his six league games in charge of the Toffees. Frederic Puquionne and Franck Plaine, his assistant coaches, have also left the club.
