SIAN OSMOND

HEAD COACH SIAN OSMOND

SIAN OSMOND

Thank you for joining me, Sian. We have Ipswich Town Women at home on Sunday, what are you expecting from the match?

“On reflection we saw that there were better moments of play where we seemed to calm down – especially in the last 15 or 20 minutes.”

“We know it is going to be a tough game because another high-quality side within the league.

“We played some better moments and pieces of football, so I am hoping that carries on into the weekend, because we need to have that quality and calmness in possession.

“We played them recently in the cup and they had a few players that were missing that day, so we know that they have even more quality to bring onto the pitch. “We are expecting a tough, but competitive game. We have played the Tractor Girls once this season. Does that give us a better understanding of their squad and help with our match preparation?

“The girls have prepared well this week and we had some good opportunities last week. “We know we need to create more clear-cut chances, but I think we are in a better place.” We have suffered from injury of late, how are things looking ahead of the weekend? “There are still a few players that are carrying knocks.

“It gives us an opportunity to look at them and what they are looking to do in and out of possession.

“We have great options throughout the different areas in case people are out, but we are hoping to have a couple more available for Sunday.”

“They have major players to come back into the team, so we know there is going to be even more quality for them to add.”

Flo Gamby has been a standout performer over the last couple of weeks. I am sure you will be hoping for more of the same?

We have recently signed Hannah Porter. How pleased are you to get that deal over the line?

“She has been fantastic. Her conduct on and off the pitch has been superb, and we chose her as the Club Captain, because she embodies all our expectations.

“It is fantastic and I am really pleased. It is another player that has been in the pipeline for a couple of weeks. “I believe she adds some good quality in an area we need bolstering. “Hannah is a senior player that adds a little bit of calmness and communication to our defensive unit, so I am really pleased to have her on board. “She will be available for squad selection on Sunday and has been training with us for a few weeks.” After coming off the back of a disappointing result against Southampton, what are we taking from that one as a positive going into Sunday?

“We are starting to see some great stuff from her, particularly going forwards as she has been picking up goals and assists. “We are hoping that will carry on into these next few games in this busy period. She has been superb for us and we are so pleased to see her develop into the role.” Have you got a message for the Bees fans who will be there on Sunday? “We always love a home game and to see some friendly faces around the place to cheer us on. “It is massively important and means the world to the girls, so please come on down to watch us as we would love to have you.”

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz This weekend sees the second qualifying round of the FA Cup take place. Some local sides in action include Fulham, who host Eastbourne Town, Brentford, who are at home to Abingdon United, Sporting London Benfica, who are away at Wycombe Wanderers, Dartford, who host Tunbridge Wells Foresters, New London Lionesses vs Aylesford, Islington Borough vs Hastings United, Maidstone United vs Bromley, Glebe vs Millwall Lionesses, Haringey Borough vs Clapton Community, Welling United vs Borough Gren, Dulwich Hamlet vs Herne Bay, Margate vs Sutton United, Leigh Ramblers vs Colney Heath, Garston vs Southend United Community, and Royston Town vs Bowers and Pitsea.

Emma Hayes, the Manager of Chelsea, has said that she thinks that the prize money available for the 2022 European Championships is below what it should be, even though UEFA have recently doubled the amount available. The 16 sides in next summers’ tournament here in England will share $16 million (on a performance based split), up from $8 million at the 2017 edition in the Netherlands, which was split between the 24 qualified teams. Former England and current Brighton Manager Hope Powell, who guided the Lionesses to the 2009 final, has admitted that the prize money is still behind the men’s equivalent, but is still a step in the right direction.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

Last weekend saw one of the highest scoring weekends in WSL history, with 18 goals across the 5 ties. Standout ties include Chelsea’s 6-1 thumping of Manchester United and Arsenal smashing Manchester City 5-0 at Meadow Park. West Ham United also slotted 4 past Leicester City without reply, with the remaining two ties ending in 1-0 victories, for Aston Villa away at Brighton and Hove Albion, and for Tottenham Hotspur against Reading, thanks to an 85th minute goal here at The Hive London.

Following the recent international break, England won both of their games, with a combined score of 18-0. The two games were both part of the 2023 World Cup qualifying campaign. First, the Three Lionesses hosted North Macedonia at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton on Friday 17th September, where 8,214 spectators witnessed the hosts win 8-0, with five of those goals coming in the second-half. The second game, on Tuesday 21st September, saw the side travel to the Stade de Luxembourg to take on Luxembourg.

In the news again this week is Emma Hayes has said that she would recommend that her players come off social media after fears if the consequences of abusive messages sent to them. She admitted in an interview that she regularly witnesses the abuse received by the players.

They would go two better than the previous week, winning 10-0. Six goals came in the second half, with one own goal, and three goals coming in added time at the end of the tie. The results leave the Lionesses top of the group, (these were the first fixtures played), and level on points with Austria and Northern Ireland, who also won their two fixtures.
