JIMMY Greaves

JIMMY Greaves

A TRIBUTE TO

JIMMY GREAVES The whole football world must know that the greatest goal scorer that this country has produced passed away Sunday 19th September, aged 81. There will be documentaries, interviews with past colleagues and tributes galore appearing across all known media, but Barnet FC had its special cameo appearance by Jimmy at Underhill in the late 1970’s. After historic seasons and goalscoring records with England, Chelsea, AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspur, and finally West Ham in 1970/71, Jimmy was losing his motivation to play. His last professional game at the top level was 1st May 1971 for the Hammers against Huddersfield Town. Unable to get to Barnet’s fixture at Hereford that day, I actually went to the game at Upton Park with my West Ham supporting Uncle. This now that feels rather good to me right now. Jimmy also had his well-documented problems with alcohol and gave up football until 1975 when he turned out for his local side Brentwood and then Southern League Chelmsford City in 1976. Dave Underwood, the Barnet FC Chairman at the time and close friend said, “Jimmy realised that playing was the only way he could combat his demons and at the age of 37 he joined us at Barnet, what a catch!” Barnet, managed by Billy Meadows, had just won the Southern League Division One South, and returned to the Premier League. Billy had recently used the services of many more senior professionals to achieve this, with Bob McNab (Arsenal), Marvin Hinton (Chelsea) and Walter Lees (Watford) amongst others and often told me of the tremendous excitement

JIMMY Greaves

amongst the players when they found out he had signed Greaves. Bees’ legend Les Eason had also returned to the Club and to this day still tells fond stories of playing alongside side his teenage idol in their midfield roles. He said, “I was more than happy to do Jimmy’s running, but he used to ghost around and be everywhere. His passes were inch perfect and his finishing still clinical.” Jimmy spent 18 months at Underhill, still bravely engaging with his difficulties in his life. As a supporter it was simply a dream to be able to chant his name and incite all the jealousies from opposing supporters - “You are so lucky to have that man playing for you” etc. The fact they were playing on pitches that often resembled a ploughed field showed he was a master of being in the right place, at the right time, and could also get stuck in when needed too! He made his Bees debut away at Wealdstone in The Southern League Cup on 30th August 1977 and his final game was away at Bath in the Southern League Premier 24th February 1979. Greaves clocked up 80 appearances and scored 34 goals playing in midfield but had laid on dozens more for Johnny Fairbrother and Les Eason. Following the conclusion of the 1977/78 season he was named as the Club’s Player of the Year. I attended an ‘Evening with Greaves’ show in St Albans some years ago now and after what seemed like hours of fascinating stories and anecdotes about his playing career, I thought he is bound to talk about Barnet FC soon! A Spurs fan then put his hand up and asked in a very strange voice, “Er, Sir Jimmy (scoff) what was your favourite ever goal?” He then told the tale of a corner during Grantham vs Barnet in April 1978. Jimmy would more than often take Barnet corners, but he said that during this game he had been

kicked by every defender, so he stood outside the penalty box on the edge of the “D”. The corner came straight to him and he volleyed the ball which in his words “I didn’t half catch it sweet! It swerved like a golf shot slice and hit the back of the net like a rocket. I didn’t normally celebrate too much but that felt so good I ran to our supporters, but there was only a few hundred in the whole ground. Ironically my greatest ever goal was witnessed by virtually nobody and isn’t even on film!” As a Barnet mad seventeen-year-old, I heard that Jimmy had gone into the bar at the ground after the game, which was rare, so I went in and stood beside him just to hear what he was saying and simply be around him. He had some ex-Spurs mates with him and was drinking an orange juice. Then he turned to me and completely out of the blue said, “Alright mate, are you going to the game next week then?” “I try to get to every game Jimmy” I replied with a quiver in my voice. “Good on you, I’ll see you there then!” He then resumed talking to his friends. I stood for a few seconds as I couldn’t believe that he had spoken to me. It turned out that he did speak to lot to fans throughout his career and was very approachable, genuine guy. Barry Fry replaced Billy Meadows just before Christmas in 1978 and tried hard to persuade Jimmy to stay but the club were looking to youth for the future and needed fresh blood. Jimmy quietly departed and played out his career at Woodford Town. We all know what happened after that, don’t we? For those of us privileged to witness Greaves at Underhill, we will always remember his graceful skills and powerful presence on the pitch. Rest in peace Jimmy, you bought so much pleasure to so many people.

DEAN BRENNAN

I N T E R I M

HEAD COACH DEAN BRENNAN

Dean, we host Weymouth FC in Vanarama National League at The Hive London on Saturday afternoon. How are you feeling ahead of the match? “We are looking forward to the game and I think that we have had a progressive week in training, especially on Thursday and Friday. “We have been focusing on our strengths in training and the players’ attitude has been excellent throughout the week. Everyone is looking forward to the game.” The players have had a full week of training. How are the lads fairing going into the match? “The players’ attitude has been spot on and I think this is the case from the start of the season. “From my point of view, I think that they have trained really well but let us see how we get on against Weymouth FC, because that is when we are judged. “Saturday is all about picking up three points.” When the players take to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, what are you expecting to see from them? “It is very important to do what we are good at and we need to give our supporters something to sing about. “That can be done by making tackles and being aggressive in our play.

DEAN BRENNAN

“We have got to express ourselves and the lads are going to have to work their socks off. “All you can ask of any person is to give 100% and that is what we are looking for on Saturday.” We signed Rob Hall during the week. Is it likely that he will make an appearance? “He will be in the squad and he has got a lot of talent. Rob (Hall) has been training with us over the last three weeks and we offered him a deal off the back of this. “We are delighted that he has joined and is something that we have not already got. He is also local to the Club which is very important when recruiting.” Looking ahead to our opposition on Saturday. What are you expecting from them? “Brian Stock has done a great job since joining the Club. They secured a good draw against Notts County recently and we know what a top side they are. “They have also beaten Solihull Moors away which was a great result for them. “Weymouth have plenty of ability in their squad and want to play football in the right way.” We have got two big home games coming up against Weymouth FC and Halifax Town. What impact can the supporters have on our results? “Our supporters can have a big impact, but we need to give them something to sing about. “Our players have got to go out there and give everything for their shirt. “It is very important that we take one game at a time though and we are fully focused on this Saturday. “We want to create a positive environment for our players and fans, but we can only do that by winning football matches.”

WALKING FOOTBALL

WALKING football

BARNET OVER 50’S SEPTEMBER HAS PROVEN TO BE A PROUD MONTH FOR THE HIVE FOUNDATION AS OUR PLAYERS PAUL STROM AND HERBERT RICHES PLAYED FOR THE ENGLAND WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM (EWFC) AGAINST WALES IN BIRMINGHAM. Our monthly cycle group and walking group continue to grow and we have started our new monthly gardening group with Colindale Community Gardens which aims to help grow fresh produce for their local food bank. This has been a rewarding experience for all concerned. We would also like to thank Mr Brian Leapman for donating two new first aid kits for us to use at our sessions. At the end of the month, we look forward to the start of the FA Middlesex Central League for our over 50’s and 60’s that was abandoned at the start of Coronavirus pandemic. Everyone is welcome at our Walking Football sessions that are on Tuesday’s 19:30-20:30 and Friday’s 14:00-15:00. If you would like to join us, please email Barnetwft@yahoo.com

TODAY’S LOOK AHEAD

BEN

RICHARDS-EVE RTON

TODAY’S LOOK AHEAD

On Saturday we host Weymouth FC in Vanarama National League action. How are you feeling going into this one? “It is going to be another tough test. Every team in this league poses different threats and we have been working hard in training. “We have been focusing on ourselves after a tough start and are aware that we need to be better. Everyone at the Club knows that. “The only way to get some positive results is to keep working and improve on certain areas throughout the week.

“We have got a really great changing room and that is one of the main things in football. “The squad has a brilliant togetherness and the lads are raring to go on Saturday. “We are all good football players and we would not be here if we were not. We just need to start showing it out on the pitch to get positive results and give something for the fans to shout about.” You have played the last few matches and have had a full week of training now. How are you feeling personally going into the match?

“We have conceded too many goals this season and as a defender, we are going to look to rectify that.”

“I am feeling good and am looking forward to the game. The matches are what we train all week for so that we can get a positive result.”

Weymouth FC have already won once on the road so far this season. How are we going to deny them another three points?

The Bees fans travelled well to Bromley FC last weekend. What impact can they have on Saturday’s match against Weymouth FC?

“It is about us and what we do. If we concentrate on ourselves and do our best to keep clean sheets, everything should start to come together.”

“The fans have been fantastic, especially because of the disappointing results. They have travelled up and down the country for us and we know that our supporters will be right behind us.

You have played in higher leagues and won promotion out of Sky Bet League Two with Accrington Stanley before, how can this experience help to move this team forwards? “We need to communicate more as a team and that is something that we have been working on in training.

“We have got to take some responsibility as players and start getting some points on the board to give them something to cheer about.”

THE OPPOSITION

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

Weymouth Football Club were founded in 1890 and played their first game on 24 September of that year. Nicknamed ‘The Terras’ due to their terracotta strip, the team won the Dorset Junior Cup for the first three seasons, becoming a senior club as the team rose in stature. Founder members of the Dorset League, Weymouth joined the Western League in 1907–08. The club embraced full-time professionalism in 1923 after winning the Western League, joining the Southern League in the process. By 1928–29, with debts mounting, the club withdrew from the Southern League to become amateur once again. They climbed back up the table and reached the Premier League and then folded for five years and reformed. The Second World War saw an end to football in Weymouth as the Recreation Ground was requisitioned for the War effort in 1939. The club reformed in 1947 on a semi-professional basis, and soon achieved promotion back into the Southern League. In successive seasons 1964–65 and 1965–66, The Terras were Southern League champions, and they share with Telford United and Yeovil the distinction of playing all twenty seasons in the Premier Division prior to the re-organisation of the league structure at that time. Weymouth have enjoyed considerable FA Cup success since first entering in 1893–94. They first reached the national stages in 1905–06 when they were thrashed 12–1 by Gainsborough Trinity. In 1949 they lost 4–0 at Maine Road (as Old Trafford was being

rebuilt) to Manchester United in the Third round, then in 1962 they reached the Fourth round where they lost 2–0 at Deepdale to Preston North End. In 2005, the team held former European Champions Nottingham Forest to a 1–1 draw at the City Ground, before losing 2–0 in the replay. In the 2006–07 FA Cup, Weymouth held Bury to a 2–2 draw at home, in front of BBC cameras in what would be the first ever match to be broadcast live on free to air television at Weymouth. A move from the club’s town centre ground to the new Wessex Stadium in 1987 brought initial success but the club entered somewhat of a slump after relegation from the Conference, see-sawing between the Premier and Southern Divisions of the Southern League. On 21 October 1987, Manchester United came to play against Weymouth on the night of the stadium unveiling by Ron Greenwood. Weymouth won 1–0 against Manchester United which included players such as Remi Moses and Brian McClair. Peter Conning scored the goal for the Terras. Journalist and author Ian Ridley took control of the club in 2003–04 and his appointment of former Millwall, Leicester City and Birmingham City striker Steve Claridge as manager brought a new optimism. Within a season they had turned the club around

THE OPPOSITION

from relegation fodder to just missing out on promotion to the Conference. Gates also increased from around 500 to 1,200. The arrival on the board of Martyn Harrison and his decision to put the club in the hands of his company Hollybush Hotels as well as interference in playing matters prompted Ridley to leave in September 2004. Harrison sacked Claridge within a month. Harrison was to appoint Steve Johnson – the brother of Gary Johnson – as manager in November 2004 prompting a huge turnover in playing staff including the departure of star striker Lee Phillips on a free transfer to Exeter City. When the team dropped down the league, Johnson was sacked by Harrison in March 2005 with Garry Hill taking over. The club won automatic promotion to the Conference in May 2006 but at a heavy price with large loans from Harrison to meet soaring wage bills of around £20,000 a week and a full-time regime. In the 2005–06 season, the club briefly reached national attention after holding former European Cup winners Nottingham Forest to a 1–1 draw in the FA Cup. Forest won the replay 2–0, in front of 6,500 fans at the Wessex Stadium and a live Sky TV audience. In January 2007, Harrison announced that in order to guarantee the long-term financial future of the club, the entire first team had been transfer listed, and the management team of Hill and Kevin Hales had left the club by mutual consent. Days later, it was announced that Tindall had been appointed player-manager, with Roy O’Brien appointed player-coach, and the squad had been taken off the transfer list. They finished 11th in the Conference National in 2006–07. On 20 June 2007, Mel Bush, Tindall’s father-in-law, was confirmed as the club’s new owner, although Harrison had personally cleared all of the club’s debts. Tindall was sacked in January 2008 after 12 months in charge, in light of a 2007–08 season record of only three wins, leaving the club in 19th, five points off of the relegation zone. John Hollins was officially confirmed as the club’s new manager a day later. He guided the club to an 18th-place finish in the 2007–08 season. In close season 2008, the club started a rebranding programme, with the club badge changing, and a club motto being introduced, “Forward Together”. Then the announcement of local children’s hospice Julia’s House as the shirt sponsor for the year, following on from successful schemes such as Aston Villa and Barcelona with Acorns and UNICEF respectively. The club also announced plans for a new stadium situated in the town which would not just be used for the club, but community purposes too. They went into the season with a squad good enough for promotion to League Two, with players such as Anton Robinson, Stuart Beavon, Chris McPhee, Michael Malcolm, Scott Doe and Ryan Williams. On 21 October 2008, club owner Malcolm Curtis announced he was set to step down and look to sell the club. The following month Hollins was suspended and ultimately sacked for what the club described as an “unprofessional attitude” on his part, with assistant Alan Lewer stepping up to the manager’s role. At the start of 2009, it was announced that Weymouth were in financial difficulties. It is suspected that Weymouth were £30,000 in debt and on 19 January 2009, Chief Executive Gary Calder announced that Malcolm Curtis had resigned as a Director and as Chairman of Weymouth Football Club Ltd.

On 21 February 2009, following irregularities with first-team medical insurance, Weymouth were forced to field their under-18 team against Rushden & Diamonds. The subsequent 9–0 scoreline is the heaviest league defeat in Weymouth’s history. The ousted former chairman, Ian Ridley, made a surprise return to the chair on 18 March 2009 following discord between past and present members of the board which was fuelled by more than ten successive defeats in the league. This was followed days later by the sacking of Alan Lewer. He was replaced by Bobby Gould, the former manager of Wales. Despite his experience, Gould was unable to turn the situation around and the club were relegated, having gained only a single point since the first team walk-out in February. They were overtaken on the final day of the season by Northwich Victoria, who had been over twenty points behind Weymouth before the walk-out. On 20 May 2009, the club hired former Terras player, Matty Hale, as their new manager. On 15 June, Andy Tillson left his post as assistant manager at the club after just 28 days to join Exeter City as assistant to Paul Tisdale. Then just 24 hours later on 16 June, the club announced former Terras player, Ian Hutchinson, as the new assistant to Hale. On 26 June Weymouth announced that they would be entering a reserve side in the Dorset Premier League for the 2009–10 season under the management team of Dave Kiteley and Andy Mason, and that the first team would enter the Dorset Senior Cup competition for the first time since the 2002–03 season. Weymouth started their new season with a 1–1 draw at Lewes. But it was to be followed by a string of heavy defeats at home 5–0 and 6–2 against Eastleigh & Bishop’s Stortford. It was not a great start but from then on a 1– 1 draw at Maidenhead United was followed by their first win since 10 February 2009 with a 2–1 at home to Worcester City. It was, though, announced on Saturday 31 August that unless Weymouth could find £50,000 by Tuesday 8 September they would have to go into administration and possibly face extinction. On 1 September 2009 ‘The Terras Saviour 100’ was launched in one last attempt to save the club from going to administration. And as the deadline neared, it was going well, so on deadline day the board decided to extend the deadline of getting 100 local businesses and this paid dividends, as on 11 September the club reached their target of 100 businesses needed to raise the £50,000 that would keep the club running. On 10 October, after a 5–0 defeat against Maidenhead United and a string of bad results that left the club bottom of the Conference South manager Matty Hale handed in his resignation. A day later it was announced assistant manager Ian Hutchinson would take over on a caretaker basis. After a weekend of chaos at the club things got worse on the Monday as it was announced The chairman and chief executive, Ian Ridley & Dave Higson would be leaving the club because of ill health & work commitments. In November 2009, former Cambridge United chairman, George Rolls made a successful bid for the club and became the new owner. Part of this deal saw manager Ian Hutchinson stay on until the end of the season. But after Hutchinson claimed just eight points from a possible 30, Rolls decided to sack Hutchinson and his assistant Andy Mason on 17 January 2010 after the 4–1 home defeat to Chelmsford City. On 27 January 2010, Jerry Gill was named as the new manager, signing a contract until April 2011. In March 2010 chairman George

THE OPPOSITION

Rolls applied Weymouth Football Club for a CVA (Company Voluntary Agreement) because of the £822,000 debt at the club. On 11 March, Jerry Gill resigned as manager after just 44 days in the job. In March 2010, Weymouth chairman George Rolls announced that if their proposed Company Voluntary Arrangement is not accepted then the club could go into liquidation. The CVA was accepted on 26 March, saving the club from extinction. However, a 0–0 draw against Thurrock the following day effectively confirmed that Weymouth would be relegated for the second year in succession, as it left them needing to win every remaining game, with a goal difference that was vastly worse than any of their relegation rivals. Relegation was mathematically confirmed on 5 April after a 2–1 home defeat by relegation rivals Weston-Super-Mare. On 14 April 2010 it was announced that Terras fans favourite Ian Hutchinson had returned as manager with assistant Andy Mason joining him on a two-year contracts at the start of the 2010–11 season. In July 2010 chairman George Rolls elected to change the stadium name in honour of 85-year-old club president Bob Lucas, who was suffering from cancer. He died on 12 August. On 12 January 2011, with Weymouth bottom of the Southern League Premier Division, Rolls sacked Hutchinson once again after a meeting with the club’s associate directors. In January 2011 Rolls hired Martyn Rogers to help the club avoid a third straight relegation, which was made harder with their 10-point deduction. On 23 April they defeated playoff hopefuls Chesham United 3–0 to get back out of the relegation zone, they were only two points ahead of relegation rivals Didcot Town but were down on goal difference. They went into their final game of the season, on 25 April, against the already champions Truro City needing to better or equal Didcot Town’s result against Oxford City to avoid relegation. Weymouth lost to Truro City 3–2 in a hard-fought match but Didcot Town also lost, 3–0 to Oxford City, therefore Weymouth had avoided their third relegation in succession.

In February 2012, club director and lifelong fan Nigel Biddlecombe completed a takeover of the club from George Rolls, who’s controversial reign at the Bob Lucas Stadium ended with him moving to another club in deep financial turmoil, in Kettering Town. Biddlecombe and his board set up a trust which would mean no one person would ever be able to have total control of the club again. The shares Nigel, members of the board and most other shares bought over the years were officially transferred into the Trust before the Terras home game with Frome Town on Easter Monday. Weymouth finished 17th in the Southern League Premier Division in 2011–12. They had looked safe for much of the season but a downturn in form saw the Terras only secure safety on the penultimate day of the season with a 2–1 victory at home to Hitchin Town. That season the Terras also made it to the FA Trophy second round proper. After beating Chippenham Town 2–1 in round one, the Terras slumped to a 6–0 home defeat against Conference National side Alfreton Town. In February 2018 long term fan Ian White stepped into the role of Chairman and settled down the off-field problems as on the pitch Mark Moseley was starting to produce a very impressive team on the pitch. Following reorganisation of the Southern League for the 2018/19 season, Weymouth finished the season in first place of the Southern League Premier Division South, to secure promotion to the National League South. The subsequent champions’ play-off with Kettering Town ended in a 1-1 draw. Weymouth won the penalty shoot-out 5-3, to be crowned overall Southern League Premier champions. Weymouth finished the 2019/20 season in 3rd place and on 1 August 2020, they were promoted to the National League after a play-off final win against Dartford. Last season despite all the issues with Covid the club managed to consolidate another season in the National League after finishing the 2020/21 season in 18th position.

MANAGER BRIAN STOCK Brian Benjamin Stock (born 24 December 1981) is a former professional footballer who played as a midfielder and is the manager of Weymouth. Stock represented Wales at international level.

the penalty spot against Southend in the semi-finals of that Play-Off campaign. Stock is also known for possessing a deadly long range shot and is also a composed penalty taker.

AFC Bournemouth

In the wake of promotion to the Championship, Stock extended his contract with Doncaster keeping him at the club until 2011.

Stock began his professional career at AFC Bournemouth, making his league debut on 22 January 2000 against Colchester United. He played 145 league games and scored 16 goals for Bournemouth before signing initially on loan to Preston North End in January 2006.

Preston North End Preston reportedly paid £125,000 for the midfielder. Stock scored his first and what turned out to be only Preston goal in a 2–0 win over Leeds United. Lack of first team opportunities however lead to Stock being loaned out to Doncaster Rovers in September 2006.

Doncaster Rovers He then signed for Doncaster on 3 January 2007 for £150,000. Stock played a vital role in Doncaster’s 2007–08 promotion season with assured performances in midfield. He filled in as captain for Doncaster in the final two months of the season due to a foot injury to usual skipper Adam Lockwood. Stock captained the side in their Play-Off Final victory over Leeds United at Wembley and scored the first goal from

On 14 May, it was reported that Wolves had enquired about Stock’s availability for a reported £2.5 million. However, it was proved that there was no truth in the enquiry.

Burnley On 11 August 2012, after long term speculation, Stock joined Burnley on a 2-year deal, joining up with former teammate Eddie Howe. In both his seasons at Burnley, first under Howe and, then later, under Sean Dyche he was a first-team squad player but not a regular. He left Burnley at the end of his contract following the 2013–14 season and signed for Havant and Waterlooville in September 2014.

International Career On 17 March 2008, Stock was called up for the Wales team for the friendly match against Luxembourg, although he did not actually play in the match. He has also represented the Wales Under-21 team. Stock made his Wales debut on 9 September 2009, in a World Cup Qualifying match at home to Russia.

McQuoid scored his first goals for the club in a 5-0 victory at home to Dorchester Town in August 2018. McQuoid is a former Northern Irish international and has previously played for AFC Bournemouth, Milwall, Luton Town and Aldershot Town. In July 2019 McQuoid was named as captain of the Terras by manager Mark Molesley. Josh McQuoid scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 victory over Chelmsford City on 10th August 2019. Ben THOMSON BEN THOMSON SIGNED FOR WEYMOUTH AT THE START OF THE 2015/16 SEASON He scored 14 goals in his first season and finished as the club’s top-scorer. In April 2019, he scored the third goal in a 3-0 victory at home to Farnborough which clinched the Southern League title for Weymouth. In August 2019, Ben Thomson scored both goals as Weymouth completed a comeback to win 2-1 at Maidstone United on their return to the National League South and the opening day of the 2019/20 season. CHESTERFIELD AWAY POSTCARD Tuesday night northern away days are what I live for! I was looking forward to this one until I found out that my Dad

was speaking at an online event till 18:00. However, with Chesterfield being so close to Leeds, there was no way we were going to miss this game so we left West Yorkshire around 15:00 to head to the stadium. The journey was quick and we arrived just after 16:00. To make the day work, my Mum and I were spending the afternoon in Chesterfield

whilst my Dad sat in the car at his online event. Chesterfield is quite small and doesn’t have much that is open late in the

evening so we ended up spending most the afternoon in the two Spoons’ in the town centre. My Dad joined us when his event had finished so we could have dinner before the game. We then headed out towards The Technique Stadium before finding parking near the ground. We were in our seats behind the goal about half an hour before kick-off. In the row

behind us, we were joined by fellow northern Bee, Jonathan, who is at The Hive London today to celebrate his birthday. I would like to take this opportunity to wish him a happy birthday!

The start of the game was far from ideal when Chesterfield took the lead six minutes in, after Tshimanga was free at the back post to slot in their first of the match. Just a minute later, things got even worse when the referee then awarded the Spireites a penalty for a trip in the box. Tshimanga put the penalty away calmly in front of us and it was clear the

half was going to be an uphill battle! We settled into the game a bit more, but Chesterfield had their chances too, which we were doing well to keep out at the back. We took momentum forward and were able to get a goal back on 45

minutes with Tasdemir taking a shot which was deflected in. Three minutes were added at the end of the half and in the final minute we managed to level the score with Adam Marriott volleying in Sam Granville’s original shot from the edge

of the box.. We went into half-time absolutely buzzing as we couldn’t believe what we had just witnessed! We had some

chocolate and a cup of tea at half-time to settle the nerves before the teams were back out for the second-half. The half started quite evenly but Chesterfield were given another penalty on 63 minutes. Tshimanga stepped up for the spot kick and gave the hosts the lead once again. On 77 minutes, Chesterfield extended their lead from a free-kick that deflected

off the wall and into the bottom corner. Despite being two goals behind, we continued pushing forward and Mason-Clark did so well when he came on but was unlucky not to score and the game finished 4-2 to Chesterfield.

At the full-time whistle, it was nice to see Scott Loach get the lovely reception he deserved in front of our fans. Our

players then came over to us too where they received applause from the travelling fans. Thankfully we were the lucky ones for once and despite a closure that made us drive through Sheffield, we were still home by 23:30. It was disappointing to lose the game, but it was an enjoyable day out nonetheless.

HEAD TO HEAD WITH Weymouth

HEAD TO HEAD WITH

Weymouth Since turning semi-professional in 1965, Barnet FC have only played two clubs (Yeovil Town and Telford United) more often than Weymouth. Barnet first played the Terras, when the Bees were still amateurs, in the First Round Proper of the FA Cup just shy of 60 years ago, on 4 November 1961. The Bees lost 0-1 away from home. The two sides have now played one another on a total of 50 occasions (including that cup game when still amateurs, but excluding one friendly). Six of those games have been in cup competitions and the rest in Vanarama National League games as well as the Southern League Premier Division. Barnet and Weymouth were two of the founder members of the Vanarama National League in 1979.

the only goal of the game was scored by Wes Fonguck. The Barnet team on that occasion was: Scott Loach, Alex McQueen, Tyrone Duffus, Ben Nugent, Jerome BinnomWilliams, James Dunne, Harry Taylor, Wes Fonguck, Ephron Mason-Clark, Alfie Pavey (Antonis Vasiliou), JJ Hooper. Barnet also won the return game last season, scoring twice through Ben Richards-Everton and Tomi Adeloye without reply, in May 2021. Xander McBurnie, who was at The Hive London for 18 months until the end of last season, is now on Weymouth’s books.

In total Barnet FC have won on 17 occasions, the Terras 19, with 14 draws being played. Barnet’s record is stronger in home games, with the Bees coming out as victors in 11 of the games, Weymouth winning on six occasions and seven games ending all square. Of those 17 home games, 15 were at Underhill and just two at The Hive London. The games at Barnet’s new home came in 2019 in the FA Trophy and last season in the league. The Bees have not lost to the Terras since an FA Trophy game at Weymouth in January 1990, and have not lost at home since April 1983. There have been some memorable score lines between the teams. Barnet won by 4-1 (in 1988), while the Bees also lost 0-7 to Weymouth (in 1970). In 1971 there was a 4-4 draw in Dorset, with two goals from Lou Adams and one apiece from Colin Powell and Peter Jenkins. Les Eason (18), Eddie Stein (15), Kevin Millett (13) and Ben Embery (13) have played most often against the Terras for the Bees, while Roger Figg (four), Lou Adams (three), Les Eason (three) and Nicky Evans (three) have scored most goals. Some names for older supporters to savour there! The largest attendance at Barnet between the sides was 2,414 in 1988, and the lowest 555 in 1983. The largest and smallest crowds at Weymouth have been 3,001 for the first ever league meeting in Dorset, in 1967, and 637 in 1981. The most recent home game with Weymouth saw the Bees secure a 1-0 win in November, last year. It was played without spectators due to the Coronavirus pandemic and

CLASSIC ENCOUNTER WITH

The Terras

CLASSIC ENCOUNTER WITH

THE TERRAS

The Bees entertained Weymouth in the First Round Proper of the FA Trophy on 14 December 2019 and ran out 2-1 winners. All the goals came in a crazy first 20 minutes. Josh Walker got Barnet off to a flying start, slotting home after just seven minutes thanks to Jack Taylor’s long, high ball. The same two players combined again just five minutes later to put the Bees two goals up, with a very similar move. Walker was denied his hat-trick soon after.

TEAMS Weymouth: Calum Ward, Ollie Harfield, Josh Wakefield, Stéphane Zubar, Jake McCarthy, Ben Thomson, Josh McQuoid (Jordan Ngalo), Abdulai Baggie (Yemi Odubade), Brett Williams, Brennan Camp, Shaun Hobson.

Barnet: Scott Loach, Cheye Alexander, Elliot Johnson, Callum Reynolds, James Dunne, Jack Taylor (Charlee Adams), Simeone Akinola, Harry Taylor, Wes Fonguck (Mauro Vilhete), Josh Walker, David Tutonda (Dan Sparkes). Attendance: 624.

To their credit, the Terras got back into the game very quickly, with midfielder Jake McCarthy scoring a stunning goal that left Bees’ ‘keeper Scott Loach with no chance. Barnet found their National League South opponents no pushover, despite the Bees playing a full first-team, unchanged from their previous league game. It was a close game, with both teams having further chances before the break. In the second period, Weymouth’s Brett Williams forced Loach into an outstanding save and Jordan Ngalo missed a good opportunity, before Wes Fonguck struck the Weymouth bar. Dan Sparkes’ second booking with five minutes of normal time remaining gave Weymouth a glimmer of hope, but Barnet saw the game out successfully. Barnet subsequently went on to beat Farsley Celtic (after a replay) in Round Two and Barrow in Round Three, before falling at the quarter-final stage against Halesowen Town.

ON THIS Day

ON THIS day 3 years ago (2018):

50 years ago (1971):

Havant & Waterlooville visited The Hive London in a Vanarama National League fixture and left with a point. Shaq Coulthirst scored a brace for the Bees, but the visitors made it 2-2 at the death. The crowd was 965.

Barnet FC achieved a 2-0 win away to Gravesend & Northfleet (now Ebbsfleet Utd) in the Southern League Premier Division. Gravesend finished the season bottom, while the Bees were fourth. The goals came from Colin Powell and Lou Adams and there were 605 spectators.

11 years ago (2010): Barnet FC made the long trip up to Morecambe FC for a League Two fixture, which ended 2-2. Glen Southam and Steve Kabba scored the Barnet goals in front of 2,221 fans. Barnet finished the season in 22nd place, winning to stay up on the final day of the season. Morecambe finished two places and three points above. Since then, the Shrimps have won promotion into League One for the first time in their history.

17 years ago (2004): A 1-1 draw away at Scarborough in what is now the Vanarama National League meant Barnet had amassed 23 points from their first 10 games. Barnet went on to finish the season as champions and gain promotion back to the Football League. Giuliano Grazioli, almost inevitably, scored the Bees goal and there were 1,542 in attendance.

25 years ago (1996):

AND CURRENTLY Mason Bloomfield, Mitch Brundle, Kian Flanagan and Sam Sargeant have started every competitive game for the Bees this season, while Sam Granville, Ephron Mason-Clark and Serhat Tasdemir have played a part in every game. Only Brundle and Sargeant have played every minute. Dover and Stockport County have used the most players so far this season (21) in the National League, followed by Southend and Wrexham (20). Five teams have used only 16 players (Boreham Wood, Eastleigh, Weymouth, Woking and Yeovil Town). The Bees have used 19 players.

The Bees lost 0-1 at home to West Ham United in the second leg of a Football League Cup Second Round tie, having drawn the first leg 1-1 at Upton Park a week earlier. The Hammers finished that season 14th in the FA Premier League. The Barnet side included Maik Taylor in goal, who went on to play for Fulham and Birmingham City, as well as 88 times for Northern Ireland, and Alan Pardew, who had previously played for Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic. The attendance was 3,849.

28 years ago (1993): Wrexham comfortably saw off Barnet at the Racecourse Ground 4-0 during the Bees’ one and only season in the third tier. It was Barnet’s ninth consecutive defeat and there was another loss to come before the team picked up its first point. The crowd was 3,767. 59 YEARS A Bee

COLIN Flatt

COLIN Flatt

A TRIBUTE TO

COLIN FLATT The Club has lost another one of the Barnet family after the passing of Colin Flatt, aged 81. He started as an amateur at Leytonstone before spells with Wisbech Town (over 160 appearances with 75 goals) and Cambridge United. Flatt then joined Leyton Orient in 1965 before returning to Wisbech as Player/ Manager. Colin joined Barnet FC in Summer 1971 from Romford and made his debut on 14th August 1971 in a 3-2 win at Folkestone in a front four of Paddy Powell, Les Eason and Lou Adams which was a formidable line that was full of goals. He played a major part in the Club’s FA Trophy run in that season. His two goals in the last 15 minutes, Barnet were one down and Jack McClelland had saved a penalty at Northern Premier League Wigan Athletic, was perhaps the highlight in Amber and Black and he did appear in the final at Wembley where the Bees lost 0-3. He made 76 appearances at the Club, scoring 22 times. He briefly managed the club in 1975 shortly before Billy Meadows took over. The Club sends its sincere sympathy to the Flatt family and their friends.

Rest in Peace Colin.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz Last week saw West Ham United legend Julian Dicks depart his position as Heybridge Swifts manager. The 53-year-old had originally joined the side over the summer, having previously spent time managing the Club during the 2018/19 season, winning the Isthmian League Division One North play-offs, but being denied promotion.

The first National League manager to lose his job this season is Danny Searle at Aldershot Town.

His two stints with the Essex club were separated by a coaching spell at West Bromwich Albion under former Hammers teammate Slaven Bilic. Dicks’ playing career also saw him feature for Birmingham City, Liverpool, and Canvey Island, whilst he has also managed Wivenhoe Town, Grays Athletic, and West Ham Ladies.

Searle had been in charge of the Hampshire club since May 2019, taking over from former Bee Gary Waddock. He led the side to 18th and 15th placed finishes in the two curtailed seasons, with the side sitting in 21st place at the time of his sacking on Monday morning. This season the bottom three sides get relegated, with the Shots having picked up just four points from their opening seven fixtures thanks to one win and one draw.

League Two side Rochdale have raised over £10,000 to create a statue of a fan who left his entire estate to the club. 78-year-old David Clough passed away last year and raised an estimated £500,000 for the Club selling lottery tickets. Having been inspired by an effort by Valencia in Spain, the Dale have erected a statue of Clough, which will sit in his seat in the main stand at Spotland. Upon his passing, he left his entire estate, thought to be in the region of £250,000, to the Club.

A-Z OF FORMER Barnet players

RICARDO Santos

Ricardo Santos was a youth team player at Dagenham and Redbridge before making one appearance in the matchday squad. He was released in 2013 and signed by manager Mark Stimson at Thurrock, following a spell at Dover Athletic, where he made no appearances. He was very impressive for the non-league club, making 24 appearances, and was signed by Peterborough United on three-and-a-half-year contract in February 2014 for £8,000. He made his debut on May 3rd in a 0-0 draw with Port Vale at home. Santos scored his first goal for the Club in March 2016, a late winner against Doncaster Rovers. On 1 January 2017, Santos joined Barnet for a fee of £100,000. He made his debut on the following day in a 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle. Santos left the Club at the end of the 2019/20 season having spent two-and-a-half seasons with the Bees, making 94 appearances, scoring six goals. The Portuguese-born defender signed for Bolton Wanderers on a two-year deal in early August 2020. His debut came on 5th September in Bolton’s first match of the season, a 1-2 home defeat against Bradford City in the first round of the EFL Cup. On 1st March 2021, Santos signed a new contract with Bolton until 2023 and was named as player of the month in February 2021. On 21st May 2021, following the team’s direct promotion to Sky Bet League One, he was announced as Bolton’s Player of the Year. The plaudits didn’t stop there for the 26-year-old as he was named in the League’s Team of the Year, together with his team-mate Eoin Doyle.

MATCH Report

MATCH Report THE BEES FELL TO DEFEAT ON THE ROAD – LOSING 2-0 AT BROMLEY FC IN THE VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE. After a cagey opening, it was the hosts who had the first shot of the afternoon after they launched the ball forwards to an on-running Michael Cheek who took the ball down under pressure and flicked his looping shot just over the bar. The Bees responded with a spell of pressure and almost opened the scoring when David Sesay took the ball down the right side of the pitch before finding Mason Bloomfield with a low cross into the box. The Bees’ No.9 got away from his defender to get a shot away, but it was blocked and cleared away to safety. Bloomfield was at it shortly after when he picked up the ball in the centre of Bromley’s half and let fly from 30-yards into the bottom right corner to force a diving save out of Mark Cousins. Despite the pressure, Harry Kewell’s side found themselves behind when Michael Cheek went down under a challenge from Sam Beard inside of the box. Referee Robert Whitton pointed to the spot as Cheek stepped up and converted the spot-kick into the bottom left corner, past the outstretched arms of Sam Sargeant. The Bees continued to show signs of equalising when Beard delivered a deep cross into the box to force Cousins off his line to punch away. David Sesay reacted first to the poor clearance and headered inches wide of the near post. Andy Woodman’s side reacted and came close to doubling their advantage when the ball was lifted into the box. Byron Webster rose highest to knock the ball down to Harry Foster who saw his turning shot flash wide of the upright. Beard caused the Bromley defence more problems after weaving down the left side before floating the ball into the box that eventually found its way to Kian Flanagan on the edge of the box. The 22-year-old midfielder turned away from his defender before curling his shot just past the far post, as the sides went into the break at 1-0.

Andy Woodman’s side extended their advantage in the 62nd minute when Jude Arthurs delivered a corner to Chris Bush at the back post who towered above his defender and headered into the top right corner. The Bees responded with an immediate chance when Beard took the ball down the left flank before playing it into the near post, only to be blocked away. Beard took the resulting corner and picked out Ben RichardsEverton in the centre of the box who leapt highest to head goalwards and force a save out of the Ravens’ stopper. Sergeant was called into action in the 78th minute when Cheek latched onto a long-ball forward. Richards-Everton closed down the angle before the Bees’ ‘keeper smothered his shot from close-range. Whitely collected the loose ball following Sargeant’s save and curled his shot wide of target from 12-yards out. Sargeant denied the hosts again late on as James Alabi pounced on a low cross into the box at the near post before turning it goalwards to force the loanee ‘keeper into a quick reaction save, however the Bees’ goalie’s best efforts couldn’t prevent the Ravens from taking the points.

JONATHAN Lang

MEMORIES ARE MADE OF BEES MY THANKS TO BARNET FC FOR ALLOWING ME - A RETIRED SPORTS JOURNALIST - TO RAMBLE OVER A LIFETIME’S SUPPORT OF THE CLUB Stretching back to a first visit to Underhill in 1962 in the early weeks of a season which proved a repeat of the one during the day I was born in 1946. But - given I started out alongside him and the later ‘famous’ John Motson - covering Finchley FC I want to remember here Roger Jones, 131 days older than me who became Sports Editor of the Barnet Press and my closest friend.

He died in June having gently pointed out some errors in a lengthy series of tales about BFC I wrote during football’s closed door Covid-19 months (as well as being the driving force of still-existing Roving Reporters founded in 1965 by the then trio of junior journalists). Family and friends met yesterday ago in remembrance of Roger at East Barnet Grammar (which he attended). The history of our club (and, obviously, there are records going back to our formation in 1888) is littered with landmark years.

JONATHAN Lang

But one day - April 20th - is extra special. That afternoon in 1946 Barnet won the Amateur Cup final for the only time (beating holders and 1939 winners Bishop Auckland) and 67 years later I was there as programme sponsor when the curtain came down on 106 years at Underhill with victory against Wycombe Wanderers ahead of life at The Hive. My words will strike a chord with some of you reading this, but for you younger ones indulge me and remember you, too, will bank up your own memories in the coming years thanks to Barnet FC.

made a first appearance in the second round of the FA Cup in December two months after Underhill was used for the first live match to be broadcast by the BBC.

As I was growing up it was all Greek in Barnet’s footballing world - though we might not be here but for the devotion and money of the Greek who has carried the club we love for over a quarter of a century.

Interestingly, that season of my first visit to Underhill was also wrecked by snow and ended with a London Senior Cup final defeat by.. Kingstonian.

In the days before I left my Bentley Heath home 52 years ago they played in the Athenian League until leaving the amateur ranks in the club’s first big year of change (1965) while others competed in the Aetolian, Corinthian, Delphian, Hellenic, Isthmian, Parthenon and Spartan leagues. I was weeks old when Barnet - still basking in the glory of winning a major trophy for the only time in our history -

We ended the 1946-47 campaign - a season ravaged by ‘the big freeze’ and not completed until June 14th - with a third (not repeated since) London Senior Cup triumph (v Kingstonian) at Brentford FC, the ground where their defence of the Amateur Cup ended in semi-final defeat by Leytonstone.

So many memories of seeing Barnet home and away since then - we’ve played in the league cup on the grounds of six clubs (I was there for half of them, including the trip to Manchester United) who have won the league title. I was there in 1991 for our first match in the Football League (Crewe Alexandra) but work meant I missed the defeat by Torquay United (2001) which ended the first of our three spells among the Football League elite.

JONATHAN Lang

Now retired, I saw the other two final matches (Northampton Town and Chesterfield) when we fell through the same trapdoor, having been at each of our four Football League survival clinching wins (2006, 2010, 2011, 2012). Likewise I made sure I was in attendance when the curtain went up on Barnet’s life at the Hive (Chester), was there with Roger Jones for a great night match with Morecambe the day after my 70th birthday (I wrote a piece in the programme then, too) and I sat close to Mr Kleanthous for our promotion-clinching victory over Gateshead in 2015. He and ‘Motty’ paid for me to enjoy hospitality when my 60th birthday coincided with Peterborough United v Barnet - one of four matches on September 26th I saw The Bees (Rotherham United 1998 and 2009) and Lincoln City (2017). I’ve not seen Barnet play at Wembley (too young in 1959, away in 1972) but was there when lost in the last four of the Amateur Cup at Newcastle FC in 1964 and then one match short of the Associate Members Cup final (2012). But my abiding memories are from the FA Cup. Indelibly printed on in my mind is Barnet’s debut in the third round (defeat by Preston North End at Underhill) in 1965, along with our win at Sheffield United a couple of years ago as a ‘Bee’ with a foot in each camp. Having had two spells living in Sheffield, it was a fantasy fixture made real as an adopted ‘Blade’ (I wrote four pieces for the programme) and within minutes of our win I was there to share in Barnet’s dressing room celebrations. That triumph enabled us to meet Brentford, like Wycombe Wanderers (the first from the FL to play a competitive match at The Hive) two clubs with a special place in our history.

How the game we love has changed in my lifetime love of BFC (one shared by fans scattered around Yorkshire and in three separate homes in the NE Derbyshire town of Dronfield where I live now). Look at the figures: Gate receipts from the Preston match were £3,109, the victory at Bramall Lane earned £135,000 prize money - with more to come. And now it’s £100m for one player!!
