HEAD COACH SIAN OSMOND
SIAN OSMOND
Sian, we have Gillingham at home on Sunday which gives us the chance to secure back-toback wins? “We are massively excited for the game after coming off the back of a really strong performance from us on Wednesday evening.
“I think we will be seeing a lot more from Jo as the season progresses. We are really pleased to have her on board because of the quality she adds to the team. “She is a great player and that is why we were so keen to get her back to the Bees.
“We are certainly not underestimating Gillingham because they have been on a really great run recently.”
“Jo is having a good influence on other players around her as we saw Nikki Jancey score a hattrick against the Dons.
How pleased were you by the character that the girls showed on Wednesday after coming off the back of a disappointing result against Ipswich Town?
“I think that they are going to develop a good partnership over the next few weeks.”
“The group as a whole have been a pleasure to work with, particularly with the big transitional year that we have had. “There have been a lot of new players and staff coming through the door and we have pulled together very quickly. “We are now starting to reap the benefits of that so a lot of credit to them all. “It was a disappointing result against Ipswich Town so to turn it around in such a short period was fantastic to see.” How important is it that we take this momentum forwards going into the next few matches? “Every game in this league is huge so that we can try and pick up some more points.
After a busy run of fixtures, how are we looking in terms of injuries? “We still have Chiara Lape out but we are hoping that she should be back training from next week. “We have a few other players that are carrying a few knocks but we are hopeful they will be available for this Sunday. “After this many games in such a short space of time, there is a level of fatigue in some players but we are doing everything we can to get them ready for the next match.” We are back at The Hive London on Sunday. How important is it that we make our home a tough place to come to? “It is really important that we continue to keep putting points on the board at home.
“It is important that we can now try and gain some consistency through our performances before we have a break in the coming weeks.”
“We need to use the home advantage and Gillingham are a perfect example of how crucial that can be after climbing up the table having hit some good form at home.
Jo Wilson got back off the mark for the Club in midweek which I am sure she will be hoping to bring into this weekend’s fixture?
“Our fans can play a big part in making The Hive London a fortress and we look forward to seeing them again at the weekend.”
WHAT’S THE Buzz
WHAT’S THE Buzz Arsenal lost their first competitive defeat since a 3-0 away loss at Chelsea on 10th February, after being beaten 4-1 by Barcelona Femenino at the Estadi Johan Cruyff last week. The hosts were 2-0 up at the break, scoring again shortly after half-time. The Gunners pulled one back 15 minutes from time, before Barcelona added their fourth, nine minutes later. The Catalan side had an opportunity to add a fifth goal in the fifth minute of added time, but failed to convert their penalty. The result sees Barcelona sit second in the Champions League Group C, with the Gunners in third. The group is topped by Hoffenheim, with Koge at the bottom after the German-side beating the Danish-side 5-0 at home. With the second qualifying round of the FA Cup taking place last weekend, the draw for the third qualifying round has taken place. Some ties involving local sides include: Fulham vs Dartford, Millwall Lionesses vs Fleet Town, Saltdean United vs Actonians, AFC Wimbledon vs Walton Casuals, Chesham United vs Maidenhead United, Kent Football United vs Denham United, New London Lionesses vs Ashford Town Middx, Herne Bay vs Wycombe Wanderers, Queens Park Rangers vs Caversham United, Hackney vs Stevenage, East Bergholt United vs Herts Vipers, Bedford vs Bowers & Pitsea, London Seawards vs Chelmsford City, and Harlow Town vs Norwich City, among other ties. This round is due to be played on 24th October, with the first round (where the Bees enter) and second round taking place next month.
WHAT’S THE Buzz
This week has seen the first players introduced into WSL Hall of Fame. Kelly Smith, Fara Williams and former Bees Manager Rachel Yankey are the first three players to be inducted. The trio have a combined 418 appearances for the England national team, with a total of 105 goals, as well as 14 Great Britain caps at the London 2012 Olympics.
Rangers go into this weekend top of the SWPL table after beating Partick Thistle 7-1 at home on Wednesday night. The result sees the side win all five of their opening five fixtures, with 15 points, as well as overtaking both of their city rivals Glasgow City and Celtic, who have both won four and drawn one (against each other).
A report published by Sky Sports and leaders in Sport say that interest in women’s football – and women’s sport as a whole – increased by 21% during the pandemic. The report also shows that 24% of men said that they watched more women’s football now than they did pre-pandemic 18 months ago.
