THE MANAGER

From the Manager I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO ALL OF THE LONDON CITY LIONESSES players and staff ahead of today’s FA Women’s Championship game. I hope everyone reading this had a good Christmas and New Year’s break. We look to continue our good run of home form today with us being four unbeaten in all competitions, our last outing being the 1-1 draw against Coventry United. We were disappointed on the day to have not taking all three points after creating so many opportunities, dominating most of the game only to slip up to a late goal from distance. We have continued to show we are getting better and better as a team and our league form is showing this. After last weeks game away to Liverpool being called off its been a while since the Coventry game but the players have trained and prepared well. Today’s opponents, like us, continue to improve and the away game was a close 2-1 affair with three set-pieces separating the teams. After going 1-0 down early in

the game to a penalty we were continually chasing London City and they scored very quickly after our equaliser. As a group, we and have taken on board some of the learning from that game and feel like it helped us to start to build a more solid foundation ahead of our recent run. Player wise we welcome onboard Sophie Quirk from Reading on loan until the end of the season and we hope to add to the squad a bit more. Bonnie Horwood and Millie Constantine also continue to step up their rehab which is great news. I hope you can cheer us on via social media this afternoon and I wish you well during these continued difficult times. See you soon,

Lee

CAPTAIN

From the Captain

HAPPY NEW YEAR BEE’S FANS I hope you have all managed to have as good a Christmas as possible. I know we’ve seen some challenges recently but I’m sure 2021 will be much more promising for us all! On a personal note, after a successful surgery before Christmas, I have now recovered and have started my rehabilitation process with the physio here at the club. I’d just like to thank everyone that has sent a message of support through a difficult period, it’s really massively appreciated and I can’t wait until I’m back out there with the girls. We’re really excited to start the year off with a home game and none better than a London derby. Each of our encounters with London City Lionesses have always been close and we look forward to another competitive game to restart the season today. Thanks for your continued support from home, we hope to see you back at The Hive soon!

What’s the

Buzz?

This week has seen the first two clubs cement their place in the Continental League Cup semi finals. First was WSL side Bristol City, who beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Twerton Park in Bath on Wednesday. They were then joined by either Crystal Palace or Leicester City, who faced each other at Hayes Lane, Bromley, on Thursday evening, before the time of writing. The remaining two quarter finals take place this week, with Manchester City hosting Chelsea at their Academy Stadium on Wednesday, before Durham travel to Dagenham’s Victoria Road to play West Ham United on Thursday.

It was announced on Wednesday of this week that the Women’s FA Cup has been put on pause for the remainder of the lockdown. The second round proper was due to take place on 3rd January, with one tie from the first round originally postponed still to be played. All clubs in the second round are from the third and fourth tiers of the Women’s pyramid, meaning that they are below the “elite” level set out by the government. The third round was also due to played this month, but this has also been delayed. London Bees and the rest of the clubs in the WSL and Championship are due to enter in the fourth round.

It has been revealed that Phil Neville is to leave his position of England manager to take charge of David Beckham’s Inter Miami men’s side. He joins the MLS side at the end of their first season in the competition, in which they finished 10th out of 14 in the Eastern Conference, which resulted in former manager Diego Alonso being sacked. Neville joined the England set up back in January 2018, with his contract expiring in the summer. The 43 year old, who was a former team mate of Beckham, was set to take charge of the Great Britain team at the Olympics in the summer, but this will now potentially not happen.

Liverpool have announced that manager Vicky Jepson has left the club by mutual consent. Having previously coached at Macclesfield Town men’s team, she joined the Reds setup in 2009, holding several different roles before being appointed first team manager in October 2018. Last summer, she led the side to a disappointing relegation from the WSL, although on a points per game basis once the season was abandoned due to the pandemic. She leaves the club in 3rd place in the Championship, with her assistant, Amber Whiteley, taking the interim manager role until a permanent replacement is found.

Brazilian born USA youth international Catarina Macario, has this week signed a contract with Champions League winners’ Olympique Lyonnaise. The 21 year old, who holds 5 caps for USA Under 23 (with 5 goals), was born in Sao Luis, Brazil, but moved to San Diego when she was 12. She previously played for Stanford Cardinals, the team of the college, but finished a year early to turn professional, having scored 68 goals in 63 games. She also won the Hermann Trophy in both 2018 and 2019 – the prize for the best men and women’s footballers.
