Lee Burch THE MANAGER

WELCOME EVERYONE TO TODAY’S FA WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AT THE HIVE AGAINST ASTON VILLA WOMEN. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all of the Aston Villa players, staff and fans. Last week’s game against Charlton mirrored our Conti Cup game except this time Charlton went down to ten players. We felt our first half performance wasn’t where we wanted it to be and the impact of the Brighton and Durham game was being felt. We only had a few options also with Lauren Pickett getting injured during the warm up as well as other injuries. We hope to have a few return today and that will be a massive boost for the whole squad. I felt the reaction to come back after nearly losing the game on Sunday showed great character and we also felt a huge decision from the officials didn’t go our way in the first half. After the week we had, I was pleased the players walked away with something to show for it and for those efforts they completely deserved that late goal. We showed great team spirit and I was pleased to see Amelia get on the score-sheet, she has been a real spark since joining in the summer, she has a big future ahead of her. Today’s opponents Aston Villa are flying and the investment the club is putting into the women’s game is started to bear fruit. They have an excellent staff and play some good football with more than a few match winners on their day. We are hugely looking forward to the game and hopefully showcasing how far we have come with a positive performance and result against the league leaders. Squad wise injuries across the board are starting to get better and the players know they need to work hard to stay available and be robust for this level. For us to be at our best we need all of our squad available to impact and change games when needed. I am hoping to see some Barnet fans in the crowd today and I want to welcome them to the game. We are one club at the end of the day and I was delighted for Darren and the boys with their big win the other night. Thanks as always for your support, it is greatly appreciated.

Finburgh makes

Senior Bees bow London Bees were proud to see academy graduate Mathilda Finburgh make her debut for the first team in our recent home matches against Brighton and Hove Albion and Charlton Athletic. Finburgh has come through the ranks with the Bees and has impressed in matches for the academy side in recent months. The midfielder has since been training with the first team before making the bench in our last two matches. She did well against WSL opposition as she came on against Brighton for the final seven minutes and imposed herself well against one of the very best sides in the country. She then backed that up by coming on late as a striker, in the 1-1 draw with Charlton last Sunday. Head coach Lee Burch said

“It was nice to get her out on the pitch and give her some first-team experience and I thought she did well with the minutes that she played” “To bring her on in this type of game means she has experience against the very best and therefore when she plays in the Championship it won’t be as daunting for her” It most certainly highlights the achievements and progression of the London Bees academy, the future is most certainly bright! Everyone at the Club would like to congratulate Mathilda and all the academy on this magnificent effort.

CAPTAIN

FIRSTLY I’D LIKE TO WELCOME THE LEAGUE LEADERS TO THE HIVE. ASTON VILLA HAVE HAD A FANTASTIC START TO THE SEASON AND SIGNED SOME BRILLIANT PLAYERS. We know today will be a tough game against a team with real quality but we have prepared well and we’re looking forward to the challenge. We believe in ourselves and each other so today is a chance to show the league what we are capable of. We have had a tough run of games recently and a very busy week. It’s good to challenge ourselves and it has given everyone the chance to get minutes. We have had injuries within the team but we have showed good character to stick together and work for one another. Our last game against Charlton was a bit disappointing for us as we believe we had so much more to give. However to comeback and get a point so late was very pleasing and shows that we have a great morale and never give up. We have looked at all of our performances in the last week and how we need to improve. Training has been very good and the squad is very determined to bounce back and get to winning ways. We know we have good spirit and togetherness but now we understand we need to take that into performances and get results. Today gives us the perfect opportunity to do that and show the league and our fans what we are about. Hope to see as many of our fans there today and get behind us to give us that extra push.

A tough-tackling centre-back, Elisha N’Dow is Villa through and through. Having come through the club’s youth ranks, N’Dow has become a key member of the team and is currently vice-captain.

EMMA FOLLIS

Since joining in the summer, the speedy striker has been a revelation for Villa. A hat-trick on the opening day helped win Johnson the August Player of the Month award before she went onto score against Blackburn and add another hat-trick against Crystal Palace in September.

Follis was the club’s most high-profile summer signing after swapping top tier city rivals Birmingham for the club she began her career at. A stunning free-kick against Crystal Palace got the winger off the mark for the season.

ASTON VILLA WOMEN

Aston Villa Women Football Club was originally formed in 1973 as Solihull FC. When Aston Villa asked for help in forming a women’s team in 1989, Solihull responded. The club agreed to change their name in 1996 to become the officially recognised women’s team of Aston Villa, named Aston Villa Ladies. In 1998, the senior team won promotion to the Northern Division of the FA Women’s Premier League. In 2019, the team changed their name to Aston Villa Women.

An Aston Villa player since the age of eight, the midfielder is the heartbeat of the team. A regular producer of assists and stunning long-range goals, West is a vital player for Gemma Davies’ team.

My Matchday

Sian Osmond

Ahead of this afternoon’s FA Women’s Championship fixture with Aston Villa Women, we caught up with assistant head coach Sian Osmond to see what her matchday routine is like! What’s your main responsibilities on a matchday? Match days I am usually one of the first member of staff in to the stadium to set up the changing room. Were quite particular with how we set up and want the girls to feel at home no matter where we are so it can sometimes take a little bit of time to prepare. Once Ive done that I will go out and set up the warm up on the pitch. I usually take lead on

the pre match warm up to get the girls ready for the game. Then my main role is just to support Lee and the team throughout the match.

Your journey to the ground – any particular music, do you get nervous as a coach, what’s your general feeling on route to a game? I used to have a bit of a routine with the music I played but not so much now it can really be anything from rock to dance music, usually something loud to wake me up! I don’t know if nervous is the right word, I would say more apprehensive maybe, I look forward to matchday because that’s what all the hard work the girls put in during the week goes towards.

Any pre-match superstitions? Erm no not really, other than the way I set the dressing room up, which I’m very particular about it.

What’s it been like working with Lee since he came in? Ah Lee has honestly been great; he’s made a real impact on the club already and he’s bought together such a fantastic group of girls this year. He’s really started to change the culture of the club and its really enjoyable to be a part of and he’s been very supportive of my development as a coach as I work towards my A licence

We see you get very animated on the touchline! What’s your general feelings on a matchday, stressed or relaxed? Haha yeah sometimes I can do! Erm it depends on the game I guess!

Is this the strongest Bees team we’ve had during your time with the club? Just how far do you think we can go? This is one of the best of group of players I’ve seen at the club and the team feels really tight knit this year, which I think has had a massive impact to the way that we have started and shows in the resilience this group has pulled together in some key moments. Only time will tell were we will end up this season all I know is I’m excited to see just how much more this group can do as the season progresses..

Favourite moment with the Bees during your time with the club? Hmm this is a hard one some of my favourites would include the conti cup win over Chelsea in 2016 as it was just so cool to come through with a win as such massive underdogs against one of the best teams in the country! I also had some really proud moments when I was the development team head coach a few years back and I had three or four players make their first team debuts that really meant a lot to see them make the jump after all their hard work!

What’s the

Buzz?

Renee Hector has this week left Charlton Athletic, reportedly for personal reasons. She had only been playing for the side for four months, having joined the south east London side from Tottenham Hotspur, who she had helped to promotion to the WSL last season. “Charlton is a great club and I thank them all for their support and understanding”, she said. “I made this choice down to personal reasons. The old Ren will be back putting her heart and soul into every game soon, no doubt”.

Rangers’ women’s side have been treated like an “unwanted step child”, and should be pushing to become the best women’s team in Scotland, says club chairman Dave King. The side, which was founded in 2008, finished in fourth place in the league this season, a massive 26 points behind league winners and city rivals Glasgow City. “I was genuinely astonished to understand what was going on with the women’s team” said King. “They were not only treated like an unwanted step-child but were effectively ignored. It wasn’t even remotely the quality, the expectation and value system that we expect of Rangers”.

It has been revealed that former England Women’s international Eniola Aluko will be leaving Juventus within the next few days. Her last game for the Serie A leaders was expected to have been yesterdays’ home game against third placed Fiorentina. Despite having only been at the club for 18 months, having joined from Chelsea in June 2018, she has won the Serie A, the Italian Super Cup and Coppa Italia, contributing 15 goals along the way. “I have come to the difficult decision to leave Juventus in December and I want to share some words from my heart”, she said.

Former England Women’s manager Mark Sampson has been charged for alleged racial abuse. Sampson, who is now caretaker manager at Stevenage Men’s, left his role as England manager September 2017, joining Stevenage this summer, initially as a coach before being promoted to manager. It is reported that the 37 year old made the comment to another coach of the club, who has since left, about a player, whilst discussing transfer targets.

Former Arsenal legend Alex Scott has said that the women’s game is making great progress, but is still majorly behind where it should be in one particular area – refereeing. The 140 cap England international said that the match officials can’t be expected to make accurate decisions every time, especially when they are so underfunded. With every club having raised it as an issue, the FA announced in August that the Premier League’s referee evaluation scheme would, from this season, be implemented in the WSL to improve officiating standards.

The OL Group, who own Olympique Lyonnais Féminin and their male counterparts Olympique Lyonnais, have revealed that they have officially entered formal negotiations to purchase NWSL sign Reign FC. The American side, who play in Tacoma, Washington, could be purchased by the end of January, with their season starting in March. Reigns’ squad includes Megan Rapinoe and former Lyon player Jess Fishlock.

THE BEES STRUCK LATE THROUGH AMELIA HAZARD TO SNATCH A POINT FROM A CLOSELY FOUGHT MATCH AT THE HIVE LONDON.

LONDON

CHARLTON

BEES

Just like the Conti Cup encounter, there was a red card shown as Coombes was dismissed for a foul on Nikita Whinnett. Both sides also had firm shouts for a penalty too but both were left frustrated by the ultimate decisions, in the end, a point apiece is what both sides deserved in a tight and cautious encounter. In a game of few chances, the Bees saw speculative efforts from Merrick Will and Nicola Gibson dealt with by the Addicks keeper, meanwhile up the other end, Quantrill was alert to smother at the feet of Charlie Devlin. Five minutes before the break we had controversy as Whinnett appeared to round Katie Statrup but was brought down by the ‘keeper, despite big appeals the shouts were waved away by the officials. Into the second half and there were more penalty shouts, this time for the Addicks as Devlin was felled in the area, but like the first half, the shouts were ignored by the referee. Incidentally Devlin’s effort almost crept in, only for Georgia Robert to hack it off the goalline. With 20 minutes gone in the half, the visitors were reduced to ten players, as Whinnett was sent through on goal only to be tugged back by Coombes, the referee made no hesitation in producing the red card.

ATHLETIC

Despite the numerical advantage, chances were at a premium for the Bees, Meg Alexander whipped a curling effort just wide in a spell of pressure from Lee Burch’s side. Then came what looked to be the sucker punch goal as Charley Clifford powered home a header from a corner with only three minutes left of normal time. But the Bees had other ideas as they almost immediately went up the other end and found an equaliser, as Hazard pounced from six yards out to touch home, sending the Bee Army into delight. The relief was palpable come full time as the Bees secured what could be a precious point over their London rivals. Up next for Burch’s side is the visit of table-toppers Aston Villa, as they visit the Hive London next Sunday for what is set to be a classic Championship encounter. London Bees team: Quantrill, Wilson, Alexander, Robert, Horwood, Giddings, Gibson (Finburgh 90), Whinnett, Gamby, Hazard, Will. Unused subs: Lynch, Brooks, Pickett, Dench.
