SIAN OSMOND

HEAD COACH SIAN OSMOND

SIAN OSMOND

Sian, after a few weeks away from matches, how has it been for the team and how was the break in play? “We are all very eager to get back to it. “It was nice for everyone to get away and spend time with their friends and family over the Christmas period, so I think we are very grateful for the break. “It acted as a reset and everyone has come back eager to play. “The mood in training has been buoyant and everyone is raring to get going again.” Portsmouth was the last fixture we had three weeks ago which feels like ages ago. You have mentioned it there but how much are you looking forward to getting back into the fixtures again? “It was a disappointing result to end the year on against a very good side, but there were positives for us to take through into the next half of the season. We are excited to get going, and personally I am eager to get back out. “It was good to have that time off because it gave us the space to review everything we have done up until this point and what we have achieved so far.” With it being 2022, what are your goals for the year and have you made any New Year’s resolutions? “We want to try and match the points total that we had from the first half of the season as a minimum. “There are certain games that we need to do better in and gather more points from. We will also want to go through with the players about their own individual targets and see what they want to achieve. “We have had good results and performances, but it has been inconsistent. “This year we want to gather some momentum and consistency in our performances because we have the talent within the group. “The group are solid and we need to continue to grow our identity and show what we are really about.” How do you feel we can create that consistency? “It is a continuation of the hard work on the training pitch

and behind the scenes. We have done a lot of work with the analyst team in terms of reviewing performances as individuals and as a team. “A major thing for us is continuing the hard work and pushing on as people settle and understand their roles and responsibilities. “It is massive now for us as a group we take those responsibilities on and relish the challenges the second half of the season will bring us.” Looking ahead to Sunday we will be hosting Oxford, how are you feeling about that one? “They are a fantastic side who will be tough to play against because they are on a great run of form. “We are expecting a tough game and we know the sort of quality that they have in and around their group from back to front. We are hoping to cause them problems with our own quality. “We have done a lot of reflection on the last time we played them and there are definite areas in our game we need to rectify and we are hoping the work in the week will help that. “We are excited to get going and it will be a great test to start the year.” As you mentioned, we lost to them when we played them earlier in the season. Do you think that will provide extra motivation for the players heading into the game? “It should do as it was a disappointing result last time against Oxford United. “We have tweaked a few things and have had a few players come in since. We are hoping we can put in a solid performance in this game.” Back in front of the fans for the first time this year. How excited are you to be back in front of them at home? “It has been a while since we have been at home, so we are really looking forward to being back at The Hive London and ready to be back in front of our fans. “We are buzzing to see the supporters back at the ground. “The players love the support, so please come down to the game.”

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz With the Third Round having taken place on 12th December, the draw for the Fourth Round of the FA Cup has now been made, with ties set to be played on Sunday 30th December. There is a London derby between Arsenal and London City Lionesses, an all-Championship tie between Durham and Blackburn Rovers, and two all WSL ties, between Aston Villa and Chelsea, and Brighton & Hove Albion against Reading. Other notable ties include Bristol City travelling to Southampton, Liverpool vs Lincoln City, Nottingham Forest vs Manchester City, Sheffield United vs West Ham United, Birmingham City vs Sunderland, Bridgwater United vs Manchester United, Huddersfield Town vs Everton, West Bromwich Albion vs Exeter City, Billericay Town vs Coventry United, Plymouth Argyle vs Charlton Athletic, and Newcastle United vs Ipswich Town. Championship side Coventry United have this week been saved from liquidation. United were promoted to the Championship in 2019, being a surprising entry up the pyramid, and being one of only a select few women’s sides to rank significantly higher up the pyramid then their men’s side. This comes after the side recently announced plans to turn professional, which they did this season, announcing their liquidation on 24th December 2021. However, the side have this week been rescued from liquidation, with Midlands-based Energy Angels set to invest around £250,000 into the club, thus allowing the club to finish the season. This weekend saw the first female referee take charge of a men’s FA Cup Third Round tie. Rebecca Welch, who was appointed to UEFA’s elite female list of referees last year, will take charge of Birmingham City vs Plymouth Argyle. She has previously officiated in the WSL, as well as the men’s Football League and National League. She has also refereed the Women’s FA Cup finals in 2017 and 2020, as well as the 2020 FA Women’s Community Shield. She was also the first female referee to officiate a men’s Football League match.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

Following the conclusion of the group stage last month, the quarter-finals of the Champions League have been made. From the four groups, the top two sides have qualified, with the winners playing another runner up. Arguably the tie of the round is Real Madrid drawing Barcelona, with both Spanish sides in this season’s competition now to play each other for a place in the semi-final. France were the only other country to have both their entrants qualify for the knockout phase, with seven-time winners Olympique Lyonnais drawing Juventus, and Paris Saint Germain facing Bayern Munich. The fourth and final tie sees Arsenal face two-time winners VfL Wolfsburg. Both legs are to be played in the final two weeks of March.

Barclays have announced a new sponsorship agreement with the FA, extending their influence in the women’s game. This deal will see the bank become sponsors of the Championship, as well as investing more than £30 million into the women’s game over the next three years.
