SIAN OSMOND

HEAD COACH SIAN OSMOND

SIAN OSMOND

Sian, it was a great response from the players last weekend and I am sure you will be looking for the same attitude from them again this Sunday?

“I think it is also down to confidence growing because the connections between new players is starting to build.

“Yes, we are pleased with last Sunday’s performance and I think the start of the match was very important for us.

“We have definitely started to hit our stride in terms of attacking football and our work with possession.”

“We scored an early goal which gave us the confidence to grow into the game.

Jo Wilson has been on the scoresheet a lot lately. How important is it that we can keep her fit heading into these next few months?

“We are hoping that with this positive momentum, we can get a result against Oxford United. “It is going to be tough, but we are in good spirits and have been performing well in recent weeks.” It is a slightly different challenge to the one we faced against Cardiff, given where they are in the league. How do you think that might affect our preparations going into it? “I do not think that it necessarily affects the preparations. What we do and how we prepare is the same for every team. “We do look at them specifically to see how we can counteract their threats as well as how we can create opportunities ourselves.

“It is vitally important, not just with Joey but all of the players so that we can continue to have our best squad to choose from. “We have been in a good position since Christmas because players have got themselves into a good condition physically. “We are hoping to keep that running as every player in the squad is massively important for us to finish this half of the season strongly.” Oxford are towards the top end of the table and will come in full of confidence. How important are the first chances and first goals in a game like this?

“There has been a good energy within the group ahead of this game.

“I think to get an early foothold into the game would be the absolute dream start. Every manager hopes for that within games.

“They are all excited to go and show what we can do as a team.”

“It is going to be very important that we go and deal with their threats early on.

There were lots of positives from last weekend’s performance, but what particularly are you looking to take from it into this Sunday’s game?

“They are in the position they are in the league for a good reason.

“We are hoping to continue scoring a lot of goals and something that has been pleasing for us lately. “We hope to continue that in these next few fixtures but are under no illusions that it is going to be a challenge. “We are starting to score from all areas of the pitch and have got lots of attacking players that should relish the opportunities against a tough side on Sunday.” Given how many goals we have scored lately, is that something we have been practicing a lot on the training ground? “We have done a lot of work in possession and getting ourselves into better areas.

“Oxford are a very good side who are organised. They have some great individual players, but so do we. “I am just excited to see both teams go at it this weekend.” Our home form has been excellent recently. What advantage do you think that might give us this weekend? “I am hoping that the players will start to build their confidence in knowing that this a place where we can win games, score goals, and keep clean sheets. That is really important. “That feeling of home has been good for the players and having our fans able to come and support us as well is a big factor too.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz Sarina Wiegman has made her 24-player selection for her England side’s fixtures in this month’s inaugural Arnold Clark Cup. Notable absentees include Beth England and Steph Houghton, who are recovering from injuries, whilst Lucy Bronze, Leah Williamson and Ellie Roebuck return to the squad after missing previous squads. The Lionesses are set to play three fixtures in six days over the next fortnight, first taking on Olympic gold medallists Canada at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough on Thursday 17th February. They then take on Spain at Carrow Road, Norwich, on Sunday 20th before finishing the tournament at Molineux, Wolverhampton, on Wednesday 23rd February.

Reading midfielder Brooke Chaplen, has revealed this week that she has unfortunately been diagnosed with a bone tumour in her right leg, which would result in her being out of football indefinitely. The 32-year-old last played a game on 21st November. She previously played in the academy at Southampton, before moving on to Portsmouth and Chelsea. She then played WSL football at Everton and Sunderland and moved to Reading in 2017 where she ended her first season at the club as top goalscorer. She also has caps for England at Under 19, Under 20 and Under 23 levels.

Despite saying last March that she would need to have at least four months of chemotherapy for blood cancer, Rebekah Stott has returned to the New Zealand squad. The 28-year-old defender was diagnosed with stage three Hodgkins Lymphoma last year and is set to feature in the She Believes Cup in the USA later this month. After missing the Olympics last summer, she will now look to add to her 81 New Zealand caps, having represented Australia at youth level.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

Vietnam have this week become the latest team to qualify for next year’s World Cup. They also become the second side to be making their debut at the tournament. Australia and New Zealand both automatically qualified as hosts of the tournament, whilst China, Japan, Philippines and South Korea all qualified through reaching the semi-finals of the recent Asian Cup, with Philippines also making their debut.

WSL title challengers Chelsea have signed Welsh goalkeeper Poppy Soper, on a dual registration contract with Plymouth Argyle. The agreement will see Soper train with Chelsea but will still be available to play for both sides. The 19-year-old has been called up several times to the Wales squad but has not yet been capped.

Due to her being colour blind, Remi Allen of Aston Villa has criticised the selection of kits used in her side’s match over the weekend. Villa wore their claret and light blue home kits, whilst visitors West Ham United wore their away strip of navy blue and light blue shorts. Allen used her social media accounts to complain that for people with Colour Vision Deficiency (CVD), that selection makes both kits look too similar, making it hard for people in her position to see.
