BARNET OVER 50’S Welcome back to The Hive London!
June saw us play three tournaments at Spurs as we reached a Semi-Final and Final. Our over 70s were victorious at Leyton Orient and we beat Cedars Harrow back at The Hive, but off the pitch, our newly formed walking and cycle groups have grown, and the cyclists have their pit stop sponsored by Wenzel’s Radlett with free drinks on offer for the group!! We congratulate Meena and Yo our first 2 women players to trial for the England Women’s walking football team. Our team has worked incredibly hard in the pandemic fundraising and delivering food to children in need in our community and we were amazed that we were recognised for our efforts in winning the FA Middlesex Grassroots project of the year 2021 an amazing achievement. We had the pleasure of meeting the Bees new boss Mr Kewell and we wish him and the team a successful season . If you want to join the walking football team playing Tuesday 730-830pm & Fridays 2-3pm just email BarnetWft@yahoo.com. Come on you Bees!
TODAY’S
OPPOSITION
Local councillor Jack Swain, appointed acting chairman, told the gathering: ‘I think that with the revival of old enthusiasm in the city, Peterborough will ultimately find a place in the Football League.’ It took almost 40 years for that dream to come to fruition in 1960, a milestone which, in itself, was the start of a fresh roller coaster ride through every soccer experience from delight to despair. One thing which seemed to follow on from the days Peterborough and Fletton was the present club’s now world famous ‘Posh’ nickname. Its origins are obscure but are most widely believed to have stemmed from player manager Pat Tirrel who said in close season of 1921 that he was looking for ‘Posh players for a Posh team.’ Peterborough and Fletton, also known as the ‘Brickies,’ folded in 1932 leaving behind debts of £248.1s.11p, a not inconsiderable sum in those days and the new club had first to obtain confirmation from the Football Association and Northamptonshire Football Association that there were no liabilities. Clearance was quickly obtained but the fledgling club almost scored an own goal before it got off the ground. The delight of representatives at the annual meeting of the Midland League, where a membership application was welcomed with open arms, turned to sheer panic when it was realised they didn’t have the cash between them to pay a £20 security deposit, a 10 guinea entry fee and 5 guinea subscription. Thankfully, Grantham Town loaned the cash and back home the Posh officials set about raising funds through the sale of five shilling shares, around 150 turning up for a first shareholders’ meeting on 31st July 1934 when a ten strong board of directors, headed by Jack Swain, were elected. Incredibly, when Posh resigned from the Midland League in 1960 after their election to the Football League, the original £20 deposit was refunded! The London Road ground was hired from Peterborough City Council and former Peterborough and Fletton player Fred Taylor was appointed trainer and groundsman with another Fletton stalwart Jock Porter as what was originally described as ‘honorary manager.’ First of 11 full time professionals to be signed was former Sheffield United goalkeepeer John Kendall and the line-up also included ex-Fletton favourite Harry ‘Bowie’ Willis, who had been in the side that achieved the club’s greatest FA Cup moment against First Division Birmingham City in 1928.
Peterborough United Football Club officially came into being on 17th May 1934 when a crowded meeting at the city’s now long demolished Angel Hotel decided to go ahead with the formation of a professional club to fill a void left by the collapse of Peterborough and Fletton United some two years earlier.
The weekly Posh wage bill was £38 and admission charges were set at one shilling for men (5p), six pence (2.5p) for women and the unemployed and, one shilling for transfer to the stand. As the big kick-off approached City Council workmen descended to build new dressing rooms at the rear of the stand and local businesses were eager to help, Midgate outfitters E.B.Jackson donating shirts, Hoyles of Westgate gave towels and George Stokes of Church Street presented a new football. A crowd of 4,033 turned out on 1st September 1934 to see the Midland League campaign begin in some style with a 4-0 beating handed out to Gainsborough Trinity, the distinction of scoring the first Posh goal going to Len Hargreaves who had been signed from Luton Town. Posh began in green shirts with a while ‘V’ on the front, white shorts and black socks with a green top carrying two white hoops and as early as November 1934, when a statutory meeting took place, it was suggested the club should think seriously of seeking a league place.

He spent his Youth career in Scotland at Dundee United and Ayr United before joining the Nike Football Academy in 2016. This led to Siriki signing for Grimsby Town in 2017 and within months he was awarded the EFL Young Player of the Month after an impressive string of performances. What’s the Buzz Josh Palmer
As with the nature of transfer windows, there are of course many player now on the move and finding new clubs. And of course, there are some former Bees among them. These include: Justin Amaluzor, who has earned a move to Scottish Premiership side Motherwell, Courtney Baker Richardson, our loanee earlier this year, who signs for Newport County, Tom Champion and Inih Effiong joining Woking, Nicky Deverdics returning to Blyth Spartans, Manny Duku also going north of the border, to Scottish Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle, James Dunne going to Southend United, and Luke Gambin, who has returned to his family’s country of Malta to play for Hamrun Spartans.
Also on the move is Michael Gash, moving to Peterborough Sports, Ryan Gondoh, who joins Hampton and Richmond Borough, Jake Hyde, signing for Wrexham, Ian Lawlor, who signs for Dundee, Olly Lee and David Tutonda joining Gillingham, Luisma Villa, who has signed for Spanish Segunda Division B side Sociedad Deportiva Leioa, Charlie McDonald going to Barking and Bilel Mohsni moving to AL Rawdah in the Saudi Third Division (Saudi Arabia’s third tier). Anthony McNamee has become manager of Enfield Borough, Maidstone United snapping up Alfie Pavey, Matt Preston has moved to Solihull Moors, Dave Tarpey has moved to Isthmian League Division One South Central side Bracknell Town, Lee Vaughan going to Stourbridge, Dominic Vose moving to Iceland to play for Inkasso Deildin (second tier) side Magni Grenivik, and Ryan Watson signing for Tranmere Rovers.
The first cup draws of the season have already been made, and these are for the extra preliminary and preliminary rounds for the FA Cup. Both include several of our local sides, with the extra preliminary round will seeing Edgware Town take on Hadley, Enfield FC play Milton Keynes Irish, Cockfosters play away at Sawbridgeworth Town, North Greenford United will travel to Dunstable Town, London Colney are at Southend Manor, Clapton will go to Hoddesdon Town, Harefield United will visit Chipping Sodbury Town, Whilst Broadfields United will host Cribbs. Oxhey Jets are at home to Bitton, Wembley travel to Baldock Town, Walthamstow host Crawley Green, Romford face a trip to Harpenden Town, whist Redbridge host local rivals Ilford, and St Panteleimon go to West Essex.
In the preliminary round, Welwyn Garden City will travel to FC Romania, the winner of Edgware vs Hadley will travel to the winner of Biggleswade and Saffron Walden Town, Cockfosters will face AFC Sudbury if they can overcome Sawbridgeworth and Redbridge or Ilford will go to Barking. Enfields reward for overcoming Milton Keynes Irish is a trip to Stanway Rovers or Leverstock Green, whilst the winner of Ware vs Takeley will host Hashtag United. Baldock Town or Wembley will host Grays Athletic, Hertford Town will travel to either Little Oakley or St Margaretsbury, and AFC Dunstable will host Hoddesdon Town or Clacton, and Tilbury will go to either Dunstable Town or North Greenford United.
Jan Aage Fjortoft has expressed his sadness of the current situation facing his former club Swindon Town. The 71 cap, 20 goal former Norway international played for the Wiltshire side between 1993 and 1995, playing 87 times for the club and scored 38 times, with the side playing n the top flight. The club are in the middle of a potential takeover bid from new owner Clem Morfuni from current club chairman Lee Power. The club also find themselves without a manager, are under an EFL transfer embargo and may face legal action over unpaid rent on their County Ground stadium. The Robins were also relegated from League 1 last season, meaning that they will again be in the fourth tier this season.
League 2 side Oldham Athletic have reported that one of their directors had received some racial abuse during a pre season friendly match last week. The Latics travelled to Ashton United for the fixture on 10th July, which they eventually won 2-1 against the Northern Premier League Premier Division side, and have stated that they will be working alongside the Greater Manchester Police to help identify those individuals involved in the incident. The club also released a statement heavily condemning the actions of the racists, stating their zero tolerance policy. This incident came just days after the many were criticised online for racist abuse against several England players after the Euro 2020 final.
